OMAHA STEAKS MIGHTY TASTY TO TIGERS
The LSU Tigers reached another pinnacle in Omaha last week when they defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks for the fourth time in five tries this season. Arkansas - perhaps the most talented team in the country with a special no-hitter star and two Hawaiian brothers leading the way, still didn’t have enough oomph! to push the Tigers out of Omaha in a two-game elimination showdown last Thursday, setting up a three-game series against the amazing Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina, who were riding a 26-game win streak coming into the LSU showdown. The Tigers were ready, though; these Carolinians could not be called Cinderellas because they won it all nine years ago and busted that cherry back then. Having beaten Oregon State and a feisty Louisville team, the Bracket One winner was poised to take their final step towards college baseball immortality by defeating the LSU Tigers in a head-to-head final series having beaten them in a super regional to get to Omaha in 2016. But it was not to be. LSU had already beaten the best of the rest and Coastal didn’t have anyone whom LSU could consider better in the field, on the mound or at bat.
Omaha, Nebraska, is best known for three things: - Mutual of Omaha, the College World Series and Omaha Steaks. LSU already is a minority partner in “owning” the CWS, having done so eight times. The love between this major Midwest city and LSU fans has been Mutual since 1991 or even earlier, because of fans’ joie de vivre, tailgating and team baseball talent and Omaha’s ability to respond to this Southern gumbo of life in an all-embracing way. The stakes of Omaha are high praise for the eight super regional teams that make the June classic every year. And LSU has not only bitten off a huge chunk of those stakes most years, they’s gobbled down the whole meal by winning the series more than any post-1980’s school and second overall in the series, still four shy of Southern Cal’s amazing 12 titles in the ’60’s and ’70’s.
The Tigers experience and Geauxmaha home town vibes added to the scenario and the plunky poultry from the East Coast were the latest to succumb to the Tigers’ mystique. The details are not important; LSU simply had the will to do what they had done seven previous trips to this Eastern Nebraska city on the Missouri River: win it all. As Wichita State,(twice), Miami, Alabama, Stanford, Texas and Florida found out, whether it was the psychological game played by Manager Jay Johnson and All-American pitcher Paul Skenes or the most dramatic at bat ever by a CWS player - Warren Morris’s walk-off home run against Miami in 1997 - the Tigers of south Louisiana are a spiritual force to be reckoned with.
Tears aplenty followed the Razorbacks off the field Wednesday night and rightly so; a mental mistake on a made for game-ending grounder in the bottom of the ninth to Arkansas’s All American leader was tossed to third, erasing the Tigers’ lead runner but leaving one out for the Tigers to do their magic. And magic it was! A line drive to left was misplayed by the Arkansas left fielder and the resulting plop and bounce saw the baseball in the left field corner as both Tigers scored to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth. It was ruled a hit but again, a mental mistake put the Hogs in the wringer. Then, not content to walk Bear Jones, the massive Tiger first baseman who had blasted a game-tying homer in the previous inning, Arkansas decided to pitch to a player who has found his stroke the past couple of days. Jones’ liner over the Razorback second baseman, a native of Omaha, grazed the leather before finding it home in shallow left field but by that time, the final Tiger had scored and LSU had an unbelievable 6 to 5 win.
Do you really want the story of the LSU v Coastal Carolina showdown last weekend? Okay. Phenomenal pitching performance by Kade Anderson, the best clutch pitcher in college baseball, in a 1-0 win in Game 1 on Saturday. Add Monster Milam’s clutch hit for producing the only run of the game, LSU’s defense and no mental mistakes as a team and the winning skein of Coastal ended with three hits and no runs.
Game Two? Even more mind-bending. An incredible first inning meltdown by Coastal’s manager and first base coach led to their ouster and an additional two game suspension to be served next late winter in 2026 at the beginning of that baseball season. A solid pitching performance by Anthony Eyanson. Clutch Tiger hitting and fielding, especially Derek Curiel and “Monster” Milan. Superb defense, led by 3rd baseman Michael Braswell III. Calm, steady coaching from Jay Johnson and his staff. And sweet revenge for the Tigers and Johnson for past transgressions against them by the Chanticleers in 2016. Revenge, usually served cold, was served steaming hot on the windy field of Charles Schwab Stadium on June 21st and 22nd. And eight ain’t enough. See you in ’26!!

CANNA LILIES STRIKING SUMMER COLOR
On a recent trip to Marksville, LA, I was amazed by the abundance of bright orange and yellow flowers growing in home landscapes throughout the area. Every single planting was in full bloom and easily noticed while driving down the highway. Naturally, I had to stop and take a closer look so that I could identify these plants and learn more about them.
Lo and behold, it wasn’t a completely new plant to me. They were canna lilies, an old southern garden perennial that Louisiana gardeners have been growing for years. I guess it had been a while since I’ve seen them in peak bloom. Thinking back on that experience, I realized that that’s exactly what cannas are known for: striking color that demands attention. Sure enough, I was attracted to the bold color, and now I want to add some to my garden.
Canna Lilies have an interesting backstory. It is believed that the five elemental species, Canna indica, C. glauca, C. iridiflora, C. warcwiczii, and C. flaccida are native to the tropical Americas and the West Indies. Spanish explorers of the New World noticed the pretty flowers and brought some back to Europe in the late 16th century. Europeans enjoyed the tropical look that these plants provided in the garden. The hybrid canna varieties grown today stem from the original plants collected from the New World and are classified as Canna x generalis. Some of the common names for these plants include canna, canna lily, and garden cannas.
Cannas are considered herbaceous perennials because they produce succulent tissue and live for many years. They perform best when grown in full sun. Plants grown in less than 6 hours of direct sunlight do not flower as well. They prefer moist soils, well-drained soils high in organic matter. Once established, they can tolerate some standing water or drought-like conditions.
Depending on the cultivar, cannas can get anywhere between 2 and 6 feet tall. Leaves resemble banana foliage and can be up to 2 feet long. There is also considerable variation in foliage color with ranges from green to reddish purple, bronze, and yellow-green variations. The striking color and coarse texture of canna foliage are some of the main characteristics sought by growers.
The flowers of canna are another big sought-after trait. Canna flowers can be red, yellow, white, pink, orange, or mottled. They are born on terminal clusters, which is a fancy way of saying at the end of a stem. These flowers will bloom in cycles from summer until frost.
Every plant has common pests, and cannas are no different. The major economic pests of ornamental cannas are canna leafrollers. The two primary species are the Lesser Canna Leafroller, Geshna cannalis, and the Larger Canna Leafroller, Calpodea ethlius. Both can feed on the same plant at the same time. The damage occurs as the caterpillars feed on young canna foliage. As these damaged leaves expand and unfold, the feeding sites are exposed and display a pattern of equally spaced holes. Think of making a snowflake craft by folding paper, making cuts, and then opening the piece of paper to show the design. Plants can be treated with preventative applications of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) once spring growth has begun. The idea is to coat the leaves with the product so that when the caterpillars feed, they also consume the insecticide. Bt is considered a biological pesticide and is used on farms participating in the USDA Organic Program. However, as with using any pesticide, read and follow label instructions before applying.
If you want to add a canna planting to your garden, there are plenty of options. Many improved cultivars are available in the trade that provide vivid color and a range of growing heights. A popular cultivar known as ‘Tropicanna’ grows 6 feet tall, produces dark green leaves with fiery-orange and red pinstripes, and produces a deep orange flower. ‘Cleopatra’ reaches heights of 4-5 feet tall, produces red and green variegated foliage, along with red and yellow flowers. It is considered a chimera, an organism containing a mixture of genetically different tissues. That means that you never quite know how the variegation is going to look from year to year. There are many other varieties available in the trade. You’ll have to start looking to see what is available to you.

Can you believe just how fast June is flying by? This year is already half over!!! Where has the time gone? My granddaughter will be starting her second year of college in August. It is almost a year that my grandson has been a Firefighter. Time needs to slow down! Too many changes, too fast. Speaking of changes, please forgive the mistakes that I may have made. My laptop decided to malfunction this morning so it is at the shop now and I am doing this on my phone. Not a fan of doing things on my phone! Hopefully I will get it back Monday. Fingers crossed.

With July 4th so close I decided to share my Uncle Sam with you. I painted him on an 8 x 8 cradle board. You can stand it up on a table or add a couple hole and ribbon and hang it on the door. He even has his own star sparkler! He was a lot of fun to paint. He really looks cute next to my God Bless America I painted last time. Such easy projects but they say so much! Let me take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy Fourth of July!!! Let’s remember, Freedom is Not Free. Have a very safe and happy Independence Day.
Well, that’s my project for this time. What will your next project be? Mine....I don’t know but I know it will be fun.
Sincerely Paula

Well, Eight is Great for the LSU Tiger Baseball team for the mean time anyway! The Bayou Bengals did what they needed to do and in multiple ways to hoist the National Championship Trophy for the 8th time in program history. LSU, which won its eighth straight game, completed the season with a 53-15 record, including a perfect 5-0 mark in Omaha at the College World Series.
LSU opened the 2025 College World Series on June 14 with a 4-1 win over No. 3 National Seed Arkansas … sophomore left-hander Kade Anderson (11-1) worked 7.0 innings and limited the Razorbacks to one run on three hits with two walks and seven strikeouts, firing 100 pitches … freshman right-hander Casan Evans earned his seventh save of the season, pitching around a lead-off single in the ninth to retire the final three Arkansas hitters, and redshirt sophomore right-hander Chase Shores worked a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts.
The Tigers advanced to the Bracket 2 final round of the CWS with a 9-5 victory over UCLA in a contest that began on a Monday night and ended on a Tuesday afternoon. First baseman Jared Jones drove in four runs and right-hander Casan Evans pitched 4.1 superb relief innings to lead LSU to the win over the Bruins. Right-hander Chase Shores picked up his first save of the season for LSU, as he worked the final 1.1 innings and retired all four batters he faced.
In another battle with familiar foe Arkansas, the Tigers had to have a comeback reminiscent of some Alex Box Rally Possum lore. LSU rallied with one out and nobody on in the bottom of the ninth inning when leftfielder Derek Curiel reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error … Designated hitter Ethan Frey followed with a walk, but Curiel was forced out a third base on a ground ball by shortstop Steven Milam … Catcher Luis Hernandez then ripped a two-run double into left field, that subsequently bounced off the shoulder of a Razorback left fielder Charles Davalan, and Hernandez scored the winning run when Jones lifted a single just over the outstretched glove of Arkansas second baseman Cam Kozeal … LSU reliever Jacob Mayers (2-0) was credited with the win after striking out the final two Arkansas hitters in the ninth inning.
In the Saturday Night World Series Opener, LSU Left-hander Kade Anderson delivered the second complete-game shutout in LSU’s College World Series history, pitching the Tigers to a 1-0 win over Coastal Carolina in Game 1 of the CWS Finals at Charles Schwab Field. LSU scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning as leftfielder Derek Curiel led off with a walk, moved to second on designated hitter Ethan Frey’s groundout and scored when shortstop Steven Milam lined an RBI single.
The victory marked the first time LSU won a postseason game – in the SEC or NCAA Tournaments – by a score of 1-0. Anderson’s outing marked the second complete-game shutout by an LSU pitcher in College World Series history, as right-hander Brett Laxton blanked Wichita State, 8-0, in the 1993 National Championship Game.
The 2nd game of the Championship series started as well as predicted for LSU and as bad as possible for the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. Coastal saw its Head Coach Kevin Schnall, along with first base coach Matt Schilling both ejected in the first inning for continuous arguing with the Homeplate umpire.
I will break away a bit from the article and go on a bit of a rant about what happened with the umpire altercation. First, let me say how glad I am that LSU has a coach like Jay Johnson who represents himself, his team and his university with the utmost class and respect not only for them but for the institution of baseball.
The NCAA said Schnall was arguing balls and strikes and was given a warning. And when he did not leave immediately, was thrown out. Instead, Schnall went onto the field to continue argue and show utter disrespect to the umps. Even when asked about this incident in the post-game press conference, he stated he was not sorry for his actions.
“I’m not sorry. Not for what happened, but that this season is over,” he said while sharing the stage with his players.
Once the players left, Schnall became a bit more matter of fact when talking.
“There’s 25,000 people there, and I vaguely heard a warning issued,” Schnall said. “I was an assistant coach for 24 years and treated like second grade -- a second-level citizen -- and you can’t say a word. Now, as a head coach, I think it is your right to get an explanation of why we got warned.
“I’m 48 years old. I shouldn’t get shooed by another grown man. So, when I come out to ask what the warning is, a grown man shooed me. So, at that point, I can now hear him say he’s issued a warning for arguing balls and strikes. At that point, I said, ‘because you missed three at that point.’ Ejected.”
The fact that this display or lack there of has been a common theme for this coach is just plain ridiculous. With this being his 1st year as a head coach we will chalk this up to lack of leadership experience. He and his team have not acted like winners for quite some time off the field even if they had won on it. In the pre championship press conference when asked about how the Coastal team felt about LSU, instead continued at top of next column
of giving a competitive answer they went for the cheap shot and laugh and well, the Tigers are the ones laughing now!
LSU broke a 1-1 tie with a four-run fourth inning as the Tigers captured their eighth College World Series title with a 5-3 win over Coastal Carolina at Charles Schwab Field.
“Unbelievable, I’m so proud right now,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson, who led the Tigers to the national title for the second time in three seasons. “It’s not to be taken for granted being here two years ago. That (2023 championship) was special, greatest night of my life. This is equal, and maybe even tops in some ways.
“It was probably a year ago today, we had 12 players in our program that actually played on the field for us in 2024 – 12. We had to go to work. Our motto for this year was ‘Tough and Together,’ and I’ve never seen a team more mentally tough and consistent.”
Anthony Eyanson (12-2) worked 6.1 innings and limited the Chanticleers to three runs on seven hits with one walk and nine strikeouts, firing 99 pitches.
“There’s one player every summer in this crazy new recruiting world that we’re living in that you know it’s going to tip the scales for you to have an opportunity to be here and do what we just accomplished, and that player was Anthony Eyanson.”
CCU starter Jacob Morrison (12-1) was charged with the loss, as he allowed five runs on six hits with 3.2 innings with one walk and two strikeouts.
The Chanticleers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when designated hitter Dean Mihos unloaded his third homer of the year.
LSU tied the game in the top of the third when designated hitter Ethan Frey ripped an RBI double, scoring second baseman Daniel Dickinson, who had led off the inning with a single.
The Tigers erupted for four runs in the fourth inning as centerfielder Chris Stanfield and leftfielder Derek Curiel each delivered two-run singles to highlight the outburst.
Coastal Carolina narrowed the gap to 5-3 in the seventh against Eyanson when centerfielder Wells Sykes hit a two-run homer, his fourth dinger of the season.
Shores, however, entered the game and retired the next two hitters in the seventh. He fired two more scoreless innings to earn his second save of the year, allowing just one hit with no walks and four strikeouts.
Mihos led off the CCU ninth with a single, but Shores struck out shortstop Ty Dooley and forced Sykes to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.
LSU has won NCAA championships in 1991, 1993, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2009, 2023 and 2025. The Tigers own the second-highest total of CWS titles in NCAA history.
Coastal Carolina, which entered the CWS Finals series riding a 26-game win streak, finishing the year with a 56-13 record.
This was probably one of the best coaching jobs that Johnson has ever done in his career and very reminiscent of what Kim Mulkey did with her team a few years ago after welcoming a ton of newcomers both freshmen and transfers and ultimately winning a title. One thing is for certain; Jay Johnson is etching himself into LSU Baseball legacy stone and the Tigers baseball program is not in neutral but more at full-speed ahead and only hungrier to win more and more titles!
As a very proud Alum, whereas you know it certainly just means more, all i will say is FOREVER LSU!

TOMATO DISEASES
Tomatoes are prone to a variety of diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, viruses, and environmental stress. Among the most common fungal diseases is early blight, which appears as dark brown spots with concentric rings on older leaves, often leading to yellowing and defoliation. It spreads through wind, water, and contaminated tools.
Another serious fungal disease is late blight, which causes greasylooking dark lesions on leaves, stems, and fruit, and is particularly aggressive in cool, wet weather. Septoria leaf spot is identified by small, circular spots with gray centers and dark margins on lower leaves. Both early blight and septoria benefit from preventative fungicides, good airflow, and mulching to reduce soil splashing. Soil-borne fungal diseases like Fusarium wilt and Verticillium wilt lead to yellowing and wilting, often starting on one side of the plant. These are best managed by crop rotation and using resistant tomato varieties.
Bacterial diseases also pose a threat. Bacterial spot and bacterial speck cause water-soaked or dark lesions on leaves and fruit and are spread by water and contaminated tools. Bacterial canker, more severe, can cause wilting, scorched leaf edges, and fruit lesions resembling bird’s eyes. To manage bacterial diseases, it’s crucial to use disease-free seeds, avoid working with wet plants, and apply copper-based sprays when needed.
Viruses are another major concern. Tomato mosaic virus (ToMV) results in mottled leaf patterns and stunted growth, and spreads via contaminated tools and hands. Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) causes yellowing and curling of leaves and is transmitted by whiteflies. Managing viruses involves controlling insect vectors, removing infected plants, disinfecting tools, and selecting resistant varieties.
Environmental conditions can also cause problems that mimic disease symptoms. Blossom end rot, a common issue, is caused by calcium deficiency often due to inconsistent watering. Sunscald appears as white or yellow patches on fruit exposed to too much sun, while cracking occurs from uneven watering after dry spells.
Preventing tomato diseases requires an integrated approach: rotating crops yearly, ensuring proper spacing and airflow, mulching, watering at the base of plants, keeping foliage dry, sanitizing tools, and selecting disease-resistant varieties. These practices help keep plants healthy and productive throughout the growing season.

THIS FOSTER-A-PET MONTH, YOU CAN BE THEIR HOPE
Imagine being scared, alone, and unsure if anyone will ever love you. This is how many shelter animals feel every day. They wait quietly, hoping for someone to give them a chance, and you have the power to change their story. When you open your home and heart to a foster pet, you can change their lives forever.
Fostering offers animals who’ve had a rough start more than just a roof over their heads. It gives them a safe and loving place to heal and grow. It allows them to learn to trust again and show their true personalities. Being in a home helps them feel calm and experience the love they deserve outside of a shelter before they are eventually adopted.
There are many ways to foster an animal in need. You could care for tiny kittens who need bottle feeding, shy dogs who need patience and kindness, care for a lonely rabbit that needs socialization, or animals recovering from illness or trauma. Your care and compassion can make a lasting difference. Also, you can be the reason a scared animal finds hope and a new chance at life.
As we celebrate Foster-A-Pet Month, consider the rewarding opportunity of becoming a foster parent for an animal in need. Fostering plays a crucial role in saving lives and have a profound, lasting impact on the pets they nurture. By opening your home to an animal, you provide them with the love and care they need to live a happier life without fear of abandonment or abuse. If you’re interested in learning more about this fulfilling experience, visit www.louisianaspca.org/foster for additional information.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.
Hopper is waiting for her forever home. She has been in our adoption program for several months, but because there are so many homeless cats and kittens waiting to be adopted, Hopper is still waiting. Our volunteers can’t understand why Hopper has not been chosen. “She has a great personality and she’s so cute and playful,” they say. It’s true! Hopper is one of the most agreeable little cats we’ve ever had. She gets along great with people and she does well with other cats and dogs. But Hopper does not have long hair or blue eyes or calico colors or the appearance of any particular breed such as Siamese. She’s a brown tabby so she has been passed over by people who prefer to choose a pet for its looks. If you are planning to adopt a pet, consider personality first. There are many like Hopper who are waiting to be noticed.
