It doesn’t seem that long ago that summer didn’t begin until real late May and would be gone by mid-September. When I was a young man, I could fish from sunup to sundown, never tiring under the Libra sun as long as there was some action under the water and I had enough food and drink to sustain my seemingly continuously growing body.
I was a skinny high schooler, topping out at 155 pounds while wrestling and playing football for two seasons. I ate well as a kid, or so I thought. I never went hungry but my mother’s grocery budget and real lack of cooking skills made some meals just something to keep my going.
My weight and summer endurance peaked during my years in Shreveport. I loved the northwest Louisiana town, long before gangs and indifference took it over in the ’90s. Even there, the afternoon thunderstorms were a welcome respite from the heat and humidity but the weather really didn’t slow me down as long as there was a body of water, golf course or a broadcast studio, theatre stage or friendly watering hole to frequent. Trips to New Orleans and vacations around the country and abroad peaked then and so life was a happy routine.
The increase in the severity of heat and its length during any given year has been a steady drumbeat since the ’80’s. As I have aged into less outdoor activities because of health issues that never reared their heads back then or new ones, coming with being from the generation of Biden and Trump, the heat is truly something I almost dread; disliking intensely the days following Cinco De Mayo until the last bag of Halloween candy is sold the day before the end of October. Actually, October is still dandy because of football and the recognizable changes from humidity to crispness, coolness in the mornings and evenings. But you get the drift.
Well. Talk about change of direction! I received my latest issue of Sports Illustrated last week and like everything else WOKE in life, this once-sacred journal has taken a turn that tells guys like me “get with the program or get out of the way!” Artsy layout styles of a few years ago died quickly enough but the past few years have confused people like me who read Gentleman’s Quarterly if we wanted to know what impact sophistication, coolness, hubris and childish trends were being felt in the world of sports, as well as business, leisure and politics….not Sports Illustrated.
The latest edition of SI shows Joe Burrow as the 2020’s version of Joe Cool. But Joe Montana won his first Super Bowl in his third year in the league by wearing what most of the guys were wearing in the league. The real Joe Cool showed his coolness by winning with a team that had not reached that level in the 33 years of their existence before 1981. Burrow, a Mississippi legacy athlete whose father’s pursuit of winning took him to Nebraska and ultimately Ohio, is a cool customer. But reading his narrative makes me wonder if he will ever trade in his “decorations, flowers and butterfies” for the less delicate world of winning a Super Bowl. No offense to taste or style, Joe, but do you really have to wake up,”feeling the color”to suit your mood? If fashion flippancy is the new standard of bringing in younger fans to the game, well, I guess we can kiss beer and hot dogs goodbye and expect champagne and brie at the concession stand.
The only thing I agree with in Burrow’s fashion narrative is that traditional two or three piece suits and ties with Johnson and Murphy shoes shouldn’t be a required uniform for any sports operation: it is too uncomfortable in the world of casualness. The rest is window dressing, a feint to keep the less than average fan distracted while your favorite athlete seems to be more into Armani more than achievement.
I’m sure Burrow will win a Super Bowl or two before he’s done. But meat and potatoes quarterbacks like Josh Allen are a lot closer to the coveted prize without Cartier and Gucci. Talk Cartier and Gucci when you’ve won it all; posturing for the new fan isn’t more than nutrient-empty cuisine and really, making 51 million a year doesn’t give you the confidence to do what you did at LSU in 2019? Maybe those quarterback hits you have sustained aren’t all because of inferior offensive linemen.

PLANT HEAT TOLERANT TOMATO VARIETIES NOW TO HARVEST TOMATOES DURING THE FALL.
Seasoned gardeners know that once daytime temperatures average above 85-90°, spring-planted tomato plants go downhill fast. If diseases like southern blight, early blight, late blight, or bacterial wilt haven’t set in and caused severe leaf drop or plant death, then you have probably noticed flowers dry up and fall off without setting fruit. Researchers have determined that the cause of flower drop is closely related to day and nighttime temperature ranges. When daytime temperatures rise above 85°F and nighttime temperatures above 72°, flowers will abort and drop off the plant before they have a chance to get fertilized. Older varieties like heirlooms tend to be much more sensitive than many hybrid tomato varieties but even hybrids will become susceptible when conditions are present. To help avoid this issue, it is recommended to plant a second crop of “heat set” tomatoes.
Heat-set or heat-tolerant tomatoes are bred for their tolerance to higher temperatures and perform well in Louisiana. These varieties will show relevance to heat in their names. The varieties ‘Sunmaster’, ‘Heat Wave II’, Sun Master’, and ‘Talladega’ produce smaller 7–8 oz sized fruit, while ‘Solar Set’, ‘Florida 91’, ‘Solar Fire’, and ‘Sun Leaper’ produce larger 9–10 oz fruit. Check with your local nursery or home improvement center to see what is available to you.
To help ensure your fall tomato planting is productive, read through the following suggestions and try to incorporate them this season. First, start out with some of the heat tolerant varieties listed above. Second, plant transplants or starts a little deeper than normal, so that the plant has access to cooler soil and better soil moisture. Dr. Fontenot recommends setting plant in 6-inch-deep holes, up to about the first true leaf. Third, provide supplemental irrigation in the morning hours. Plants take up water more efficiently during the early morning period. Watering during the morning hours is more beneficial than later in the afternoon. Lastly, mulch the entire garden to cool roots and even out soil moisture. You can use fallen leaves or a commercial product, just try to maintain a 3-4 inch layer to maximize the effect. These recommendations come from procedures followed by LSU AgCenter researchers performing variety trial experiments. Try to incorporate as many as you can to give your plants a fighting chance.

Hope everyone survived the rain storm with no significant water damage. I am so grateful we didn’t get a lot of rain from this disturbance. But we had enough to stop the grass from getting cut. And my grass sure is high!!! Maybe the yard will dry enough to get cut by this weekend. Fingers crossed!
By Paula Johnson
While sitting on the patio looking at the grass that needs to be cut, I saw two ladybugs, a snail, and even a couple mushrooms. I sat there for a while and thought, “wait....that reminds me of something”. So I went digging through some of the classes I took and there it was! The Ladybug TeaPot. It had all elements I had just seen in my own backyard. I took it as a sign to get this painted up for today’s column. The surface is an eight inch wooden birch teapot. The background color can be changed to match any kitchen. I plan on painting one with a pale green background and another with a pale yellow background. I can hardly wait for the surfaces to come in. I even had a request to change the characters. I think that will be fun! I can hardly wait! I am sketching out Halloween and Christmas designs for this surface. So many possibilities for this! Do you have any ideas you would like to share? Email me at PaulaJ3036@gmail.com. I would love to hear them.
Well, that’s my project for this time. What will your next project be? Mine....I don’t know. But, I know it will be fun!
Sincerely Paula Johnson
Kelly has answered with transparency and commitment. At SEC Media Days, he praised the importance of NIL integrity and announced he and his wife would match $1 million in NIL funds to support Tiger athletes—adding to a surge in donor contributions . However, there’s little generosity left for mediocrity: Kelly’s March to the SEC top must show real progress this fall.
2. Quarterback: Nussmeier Eyes Heisman & Clean Game
1. High Expectations & Pressure
Heading into Brian Kelly’s fourth season, the LSU Tigers are under intense pressure to deliver results. Despite early success—a pair of 10-win seasons—LSU fell short in 2024, finishing 9–4 and missing the College Football Playoff. With rivals Alabama, Georgia, Texas, and Oklahoma creeping up, LSU’s fanbase and donors are clamoring for a championship run.
Garrett Nussmeier, a fifth-year senior, is poised as LSU’s centerpiece. The heir to the Burrow-Daniels QB lineage, Nussmeier threw over 4,000 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2024. He enters 2025 on Heisman shortlists—but with a mission to cut his interception count dramatically
His offensive arsenal has grown. Transfers Nic Anderson, Bauer Sharp, and Barion Brown supplement returning receivers Chris Hilton and Aaron Anderson, enhancing route diversity and field-stretching options. Expect a faster tempo and more aggressive pre-snap motion, allowing Nussmeier to capitalize on his arm and anticipation skills.
Backup QBs Michael Van Buren Jr. (a former Mississippi State talent) and other depth options provide insurance, though Nussmeier’s veteran leadership likely secures the primary role. His growth from ballsecurity lapses to polished field general will be a major early-season storyline.
3. Offense: Reinventing the O‑Line & Run Game
repairs
With All-American tackles Will Campbell and Emery Jones Jr. now in the NFL draft, LSU must rebuild its front line—but isn’t lacking hope. Kelly has recruited seasoned transfers and redshirt upperclassmen, blending veteran savvy with existing depth like redshirt-junior DJ Chester. Kelly’s bullish sentiments suggest confidence in a restructured unit
Behind that line, the run game takes the spotlight. Sophomore Caden Durham steps forward, with true freshman Harlem Berry also making noise. Though LSU struggled to run effectively in 2024, improvements up front should revitalize balance—assuming the line gels and creates opportunities Nussmeier can exploit via play-action.
4. Defensive Turnaround: Top Level Talent Arrives
LSU’s defense was inconsistent in 2024, especially during critical losses (such as against Alabama, A&M, and Florida, where they conceded 107 points over three games). To remedy this, Brian Kelly added key transfers during the offseason .
Patrick Payton (DE, from Florida State): ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year adds edge-rush explosiveness on the front line
Jack Pyburn (DE, via transfer from Florida): Another high-motor pass rusher to enhance defensive pressure.
At linebacker, Whit Weeks is LSU’s emotional and athletic anchor. After recovering from a broken ankle, Weeks is back and leading the unit alongside West Weeks and others—creating a formidable inside presence. Weeks has openly challenged teammates: “Nothing short of a national championship will suffice”
With secondary depth bolstered, and Coordinator Blake Baker equipped with better personnel, LSU could return to elite SEC defensive stature—essential in games against explosive passing offenses.
5. Roster Breakdown & Positional Analysis Offense
Quarterback: Garrett Nussmeier (Sr), Michael Van Buren Jr. (So)
Receivers/Tight Ends: Chris Hilton Jr., Aaron Anderson, Nic Anderson, Barion Brown; TEs Bauer Sharp and Trey’Dez Green anchor the middle.
Running backs: Caden Durham, Harlem Berry (RFr), Kaleb Jackson, Trey Holly—fresh legs to diversify the offense.
Offensive Line
Reconstructed via transfers and internal
have worked “in the wars” alongside younger athletes.
Defense
DL/Edge: Patrick Payton, Jack Pyburn, Ahmad Breaux emerging; veteran interior tackles set the tone.
Linebackers: Whit Weeks leads a robust core that could become LSU’s calling card.
Secondary: Ashton Stamps, DJ Pickett, and a mix of returning and new talent aim to tighten coverage.
Special Teams
Punter and Kicker roles are newly assigned; these units can swing tight games and matter in SEC showdowns.
6. Schedule & Key Matchups
LSU’s early schedule is brutal—and by design. They open road at No. 5 Clemson, then host Florida, visit Ole Miss, and welcome South Carolina through week six—a gauntlet to prove championship potential
Later marquee games include rematches against Alabama, Georgia, and Texas A&M. Strength of schedule is among the toughest in the country—but a fast start could define Kelly’s case for a playoff run.
7. How the SEC Landscape Shapes LSU’s Season
The SEC was shut out of national titles in 2023–24, while the Big Ten ascended. With Texas and Georgia also vying in the public eye, LSU is firmly in the SEC title conversation—sitting in the preseason Top 5 along with those peers .
To reassert SEC dominance—and reclaim national acclaim—LSU must emerge from this ‘super-conference’ with momentum, catching an opening in a parity-rich national field.
8. Individual Watchpoints & Player Impact
Player Key Notes
**Garrett Nussmeier (QB)** Can he refine ball security, hit mid-range throws consistently, and lead in high-pressure games?
**Whit Weeks (LB)** Emotional leader—will his return elevate front-seven performance?
**Patrick Payton (DE)** Can the FSU transfer become an answer for LSU’s pass rush woes?
**Caden Durham (RB)** Sophomore push—will he be a 1,000-yard workhorse behind a rebuilt offensive line?
O-Line Group New pieces at tackle/OG—can they gel quickly under pressure?
9. Final Notes & Predictions
Kelly says this is his best roster yet—and given the talent and depth, that might be accurate . A lethal combination of Nussmeier’s arm, a rejuvenated defense, and improved depth has LSU on the brink.
Best-case scenario: LSU starts 4–0, wins key conference games, and earns a spot in the College Football Playoff—possibly contending for the title.
Risk factors: Slow starts (especially vs. Clemson and Florida), O-line chemistry issues, or turnovers from Nussmeier could derail aspirations.
Expect national coverage to follow each step. LSU’s season will be seen as the SEC’s litmus test for reclaiming college football supremacy. If Kelly delivers, he’ll join the storied legacy of Saban, Miles, and Orgeron; if not, fan patience may wear thin.
4. Defense revamp: Additions in the front seven and LB leadership.
5. Schedule gauntlet: Clemson, SEC foes early—good or bust start.
6. Conference integrity: LSU’s performance reflects SEC’s quest for dominance.
LSU enters 2025 not just with hopes—but realistic tools—to pursue a national title. All eyes will be on
Baton Rouge as the season unfolds. Let’s see if Kelly’s revamped squad can deliver the roar fans crave. Don’t forget, you are invited to check out our sports only podcast. PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT
Holy Spirit, you who made me see everything and showed me the way to reach my ideal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong as done to me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank you for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from you, no matter how great the material desire may be. I want to be with you and my loved ones in your perpetual glory. AMEN. Thank you for your love towards me and my loved ones. Say this prayer for 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the favor requested will be granted even if it may appear difficult.

CARNIVOROUS PLANT BOG GARDENS
Mississippi is home to a variety of carnivorous plants includ-ing sundews and pitcher plants. Carnivorous plants prefer low- nutri-ent areas with acidic, wet soils such as bogs and swamps. These plants, when given the right conditions, are easy to grow and will live for many years. Bog gardens can be created in wet areas of your land-scape or planted in containers for house plants or patio gardening. When building a bog garden outdoors, take advantage of wet soil locations such as gutter runoff areas, road ditches, pond edges, and muddy areas. It is especially important to remember these plants require at least six hours of full sunlight each day. Carnivorous plants need to be grown in areas with acidic soils as well. After you choose the location for your bog garden, dig a shallow area about twelve inches deep and place a pond liner along the bottom. The bog will need adequate drainage, so be sure to poke large holes into the sides of the liner before adding soil. A soil medium of 80% course peat moss and 20% sharp sand is ideal for a bog. Water the soil mixture thoroughly before planting.
These gardens can also be created in containers. Container sizes need to be at least eight to twelve inches deep. The same soil mixture as the landscape bog works for container gardens as well. A saucer filled with water should be placed underneath containers to ensure the soil mixture is always moist. Bigger contain-ers are easier to maintain because soil mixtures in smaller pots dry out easier.

FIND YOUR NEW BEST FRIEND IN NEW ORLEANS DURING NATIONAL ADOPTION WEEK
If you’ve been thinking about adding a furry friend to your family, now is the perfect time to welcome one into your home. From Friday, July 25 through Sunday, July 27, the Louisiana SPCA is partnering with PetSmart Charities and Bryan Subaru for National Adoption Week.
We’re bringing some of our most lovable cats and dogs from both our Orleans and Plaquemines Campuses to two local PetSmart locations: the Manhattan PetSmart in Harvey and the S. Claiborne PetSmart in New Orleans. Each adoption will include one month of MetLife Pet Insurance and access to discounted virtual training through GoodPup to help support the long-term health and success of your new pet.
However, this event is more than just adoption. It’s about changing the life of an animal who has been patiently waiting for a second chance. Whether it’s a playful puppy, a curious kitten, or a gentle senior pet, you might be surprised by who captures your heart. Every animal that adopts you will be vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed or neutered before going home.
We understand that adopting a shelter pet can sometimes feel like a big decision, especially when myths about their health, behavior, or background create uncertainty. It’s natural to have questions or hesitation, but unfortunately, those misconceptions often prevent amazing animals from finding homes. The truth is, every pet in our care receives a full medical evaluation, ongoing veterinary care, and lots of love and attention from our dedicated staff and volunteers. We take the time to get to know each animal as an individual, not just a number. When you adopt from us, you’ll be fully informed about their personality, needs, and history. Our goal is to make sure you feel supported and confident in your decision, and that every animal finds the loving home they’ve been waiting for.
Additionally, older animals are often calm, loyal, and settle into new homes easily. Larger dogs and less popular breeds can be just as loving and fun as any other pet. And adopting an animal who is healing from illness, injury, or past abuse can be incredibly rewarding. These pets are strong, resilient, and grateful for a second chance. No matter their story, each one has the potential to become a loving and devoted companion.
If you are in New Orleans, Harvey, or anywhere in the Greater New Orleans area, come meet the animals waiting for you at PetSmart on S. Claiborne or PetSmart on Manhattan. You can visit www.louisianaspca.org/adopt/animals to preview some of the adoptable pets that will be there and learn more about National Adoption Week before you visit in person.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.
Hello, my name is Heart. I was living in a place that was not very safe. The people there loved me but they went off and left me and my two brothers behind. Lucky for us, a rescue organization provided food for us until room could be found for us in a foster home. They also took us to a vet for shots and flea prevention. We are ready to be adopted by families that will give us safe, loving homes. Please contact your local rescue group or shelter to adopt, volunteer or donate so that cats like me and my brothers can find homes.
