Tony’s Take TIGERS TAKE RIGHTFUL PLACE ON THE ARKANSAS RIVER
The LSU Tigers, led by a complete ball-playing freshman, a Monster and a Bear, along with the best 1-2 pitching punch in college football, have returned to the shrine of college baseball this month as they defeated West Virginia twice to advance into the field of Elite Eight in Omaha.
Men’s College Word series time means lots of beer and boudin, barbecuing and bayou adventures told at a more than fair number of eating and watering holes in this eastern Nebraska city. Omaha becomes LSU North in June even when the Tigers don’t make it, which is as rare as your young adult child not coming home after a rough episode in adulthood. Everyone takes a Baton Rouge check and if you are from Oregon or Carolina, bring credit cards and traveler’s checks if you want a financially secure experience.
These Tigers have their best fielding team of all time, with a great double play pair (although they haven’t had to turn too many of those this season). They have the aforementioned duo of Eyanson and Anderson on the mound, lots of depth for pinch hitting and defensive versatility and enough power to compete without having to resort to Gorilla Ball. They face a field of seven other hopefuls, but to be fair to the field, this Tiger team should have a relatively easy time if they can survive their first game against Arkansas on Saturday. LSU defeated the Hogs twice in their SEC series this year in Baton Rouge, but the only team in Omaha that might have more overall talent than LSU is Arkansas. And they are due for one for their long-suffering manager who has been to the College Show numerous times but never grabbing the brass ring.
The thing LSU has going for them, however, is the gravitas of being LSU, college baseball’s standard for the past 34 years. This team is the pinstripes of the Yankees, the Dodger Blue of their discipline. They have the four best teams in Omaha in their bracket: Arkansas, Coastal Carolina and Arizona. Arkansas is the highest ranked team in the CWS, LSU is second. The hottest team, though, is Coastal Carolina, making only their second trip to Omaha. But they won it all in 2016, beating LSU in a super regional to advance. They play Arizona, a team destroyed by previously #1 ranked North Carolina in their first game, 18-2, but then turned on the TarHeels in their own ballpark to take the series, two games to one.

There has been an increase in vehicle burglaries in our neighborhoods, shopping center and restaurant parking lots. Some are unlocked
I rank Oregon State, a team with no conference and hopefully, no more perverts on the squad, fifth, followed by UCLA, Murray State and Louisville. In most years, Murray State, who has to beat Duke (DUKE!!) on this Deadline evening to advance to the CWS (which they should), would be the underdog darling of the field. But that honor belongs to Coastal Carolina, rightly earned in Raleigh and riding a 23-game win streak, something no other CWS team has ever done coming into Omaha.
MY prediction, prejudiced of course, is the Tigers facing the gauntlet of Arkansas, Coastal and Arizona, will advance to the title series against Oregon State. The Tigers won’t Leave It To Beavers and will come away with their 8th CWS dogpile and title. After all, the Mountaineers found out against LSU that West Virginia was not almost Heaven but the hell of having to compete against the face of college baseball last week. -0-

CANNA LILIES STRIKING SUMMER COLOR
On a recent trip to Marksville, LA, I was amazed by the abundance of bright orange and yellow flowers growing in home landscapes throughout the area. Every single planting was in full bloom and easily noticed while driving down the highway. Naturally, I had to stop and take a closer look so that I could identify these plants and learn more about them.
Lo and behold, it wasn’t a completely new plant to me. They were canna lilies, an old southern garden perennial that Louisiana gardeners have been growing for years. I guess it had been a while since I’ve seen them in peak bloom. Thinking back on that experience, I realized that that’s exactly what cannas are known for: striking color that demands attention. Sure enough, I was attracted to the bold color, and now I want to add some to my garden.
Canna Lilies have an interesting backstory. It is believed that the five elemental species, Canna indica, C. glauca, C. iridiflora, C. warcwiczii, and C. flaccida are native to the tropical Americas and the West Indies. Spanish explorers of the New World noticed the pretty flowers and brought some back to Europe in the late 16th century. Europeans enjoyed the tropical look that these plants provided in the garden. The hybrid canna varieties grown today stem from the original plants collected from the New World and are classified as Canna x generalis. Some of the common names for these plants include canna, canna lily, and garden cannas.
Cannas are considered herbaceous perennials because they produce succulent tissue and live for many years. They perform best when grown in full sun. Plants grown in less than 6 hours of direct sunlight do not flower as well. They prefer moist soils, well-drained soils high in organic matter. Once established, they can tolerate some standing water or drought-like conditions.
Depending on the cultivar, cannas can get anywhere between 2 and 6 feet tall. Leaves resemble banana foliage and can be up to 2 feet long. There is also considerable variation in foliage color with ranges from green to reddish purple, bronze, and yellow-green variations. The striking color and coarse texture of canna foliage are some of the main characteristics sought by growers.
The flowers of canna are another big sought-after trait. Canna flowers can be red, yellow, white, pink, orange, or mottled. They are born on terminal clusters, which is a fancy way of saying at the end of a stem. These flowers will bloom in cycles from summer until frost.
Every plant has common pests, and cannas are no different. The major economic pests of ornamental cannas are canna leafrollers. The two primary species are the Lesser Canna Leafroller, Geshna cannalis, and the Larger Canna Leafroller, Calpodea ethlius. Both can feed on the same plant at the same time. The damage occurs as the caterpillars feed on young canna foliage. As these damaged leaves expand and unfold, the feeding sites are exposed and display a pattern of equally spaced holes. Think of making a snowflake craft by folding paper, making cuts, and then opening the piece of paper to show the design. Plants can be treated with preventative applications of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) once spring growth has begun. The idea is to coat the leaves with the product so that when the caterpillars feed, they also consume the insecticide. Bt is considered a biological pesticide and is used on farms participating in the USDA Organic Program. However, as with using any pesticide, read and follow label instructions before applying.
If you want to add a canna planting to your garden, there are plenty of options. Many improved cultivars are available in the trade that provide vivid color and a range of growing heights. A popular cultivar known as ‘Tropicanna’ grows 6 feet tall, produces dark green leaves with fiery-orange and red pinstripes, and produces a deep orange flower. ‘Cleopatra’ reaches heights of 4-5 feet tall, produces red and green variegated foliage, along with red and yellow flowers. It is considered a chimera, an organism containing a mixture of genetically different tissues. That means that you never quite know how the variegation is going to look from year to year. There are many other varieties available in the trade. You’ll have to start looking to see what is available to you.

The beginning of the hot temperatures are here! I am looking forward to the rain they said we will get next week. I have to water my outside plants everyday so they don’t wilt. And really, it’s not really that hot yet, it is only 86 degrees this afternoon and there is a nice breeze on the back patio. When I paint out there, the paint dries really fast. That isn’t too good when I am shading and highlighting, but great when I am base coating.
By Paula Johnson
I took a ride to Hobby Lobby the other day since I hadn’t been there in awhile. They had Fourth of July items on sale for 40% off. I decided to pick up this God Bless America wood surface. I know I am really early for the Fourth of July but when the mood strikes, follow through! I painted this very simply. Wouldn’t this be a great project for you and your child or grandchild to make together? Let their creativity run wild! They can paint the letters and add strips, hearts, stars, dots, just anything they want. So many possibilities!!!! Think how proud they would be to show off their artwork to family and friends!
Well, that’s my project for this time. What will your next project be? Mine.....I don’t know. But, I know it will be fun! And Now I am going to take another class to learn something new
Sincerely Paula Johnson,
It was needed as Anderson and Eyanson were good but just not as spot on as they usually are. In 2 Super Regional games, LSU came away with 18 hits, 28 runs, 8 extra base hits, 4 home runs, 2 grand-slams and patiently had over 24 free passes (walks or hit by pitches).
Well, the LSU Tiger Baseball team is Back Home in Omahaaaaa! The Tigers rode the arms of Kade Anderson and Anthony Eyanson for most of the year, but the bats have come alive at the right time! Now, think about this, the legacy of the Bayou Bengal Baseball team is very well known and for the 1st time in program history they scored double digit runs in back-to-back Super Regional games!
It is tough to say but top to bottom this LSU roster is probably better than the 2023 National Championship team that included Paul Skenes, Dylan Crews and Tommy White! According to Senior Leader Josh Pearson, who was a key contributor on that ‘23 team who came in as a pinch hitter for his final appearance after playing 4 years in Alex Box;
“We have a really deep team this year, I feel like we have guys who can play in the big leagues who don’t start every day.”
The good news for LSU is that it seems they are hitting their stride at the perfect time! Yes, my pun was intended on that statement. Making it to Omaha is not the goal of this team, winning the title is the main goal! In order to do that, the Tigers will have to face familiar SEC rival in Arkansas! If they get by the Razorbacks than they will have to play the winner of UCLA and Duke or Wright State as that Super Regional was not finished upon press time.
Speaking of LSU and Arkansas, they are the last 2 remaining SEC teams left in the Tournament. As previously mentioned, the way the bracket set up going into the NCAA tournament, with Arkansas as the No. 3 national seed and LSU as the No. 6, they’ve been set on a collision course from the beginning. So only one can possibly survive all the way to the College World Series finals.
The shock is that no one else from the SEC is still in the running after getting a record 13 teams in the field. Now, we are not saying that the mighty have fallen, but the SEC definitely stubbed both feet!
No. 1 overall national seed Vanderbilt, a soft No. 1 in my opinion, almost suffered the embarrassment of going 0-2 in its own regional, bowing out in three games. No. 2 overall seed Texas, the SEC regularseason champion, got knocked out in its regional final by in-state little brother UTSA.
Alabama went 0-2 in its regional. Florida, 1-2. Georgia, the No. 7 national seed, started out by bashing Binghamton 20-4 (the Bearcats are known for being Tony Kornheiser’s alma mater, not for baseball), then lost the next two. No. 10 Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Oklahoma and Kentucky all fought through to their regional finals, with Kentucky falling by one run (13-12) to the West Virginia team that squared off in the Baton Rouge super regional with LSU.
Arkansas ended Tennessee’s hopes of a CWS repeat in two super regional games, that barely saw the Volunteers put up much of a fight. Auburn also was humbled in two by Coastal Carolina in the supers, yes, the same Coastal Carolina team that beat LSU in the 2016 super regionals at Alex Box Stadium en route to a surprise CWS title.
Two teams in the CWS would be the fewest for the SEC in Omaha since 2016, when Florida was the league’s lone representative in Omaha. If you weren’t looking closely you might have missed the Gators that year, as they were two-and-Nebraska-barbeque.
We’ve all gotten so used to the SEC being so dominant in so many sports, it’s startling to see them not filling half the slots or more in Omaha with their teams. Especially since Texas and OU joined the league this season. At least three SEC teams made it to the CWS in each of the past four years. If you added Texas and Oklahoma in 2022, it would have been six.
But, sometimes, the SEC just means more participants, not more championships.
Or is that the case? Connecting some diminishing dots with the fact that the league has gone since the 2022 season (Gasp!) without winning a CFP championship. Florida won the men’s basketball title in April and Texas just won in softball. LSU or Arkansas has the power to make it five straight CWS crowns for the SEC.
It’s just weird, astonishing, crazy even, that the Tigers and Razorbacks don’t have more conference company on the road to Omaha.

LAWNMOWER SAFETY
If you own a dog or cat, you will have to control fleas. Even light flea infestations are annoying to pets, and some dogs and cats develop skin problems because they are al-lergic to flea bites. Heavy flea infestations can cause pets to be unthrifty and cause anemia in puppies and kittens. Fleas also bite people, although generally not vectors of any hu-man diseases east of the Mississippi River, and heavy infestations in the home or yard can make life miserable for pet owners and their family and friends. Although there are many different species of fleas in the world, the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis, is the species that most commonly occurs on dogs and cats in the United States.

As parasites of dogs, cats, and other mammals, adult fleas spend most of their time on their host. Eggs, which are normally laid when the host is at rest, fall from the host and accumulate in the bedding area. The flea larvae that hatch from these eggs develop by feeding on dander, dried blood droplets, and other organic matter that accumulates in such bedding areas. After feeding in this location for several weeks, flea larvae enter a nonfeeding pupal stage and then emerge as adult fleas. These adult fleas hop onto a host to obtain the blood meals they require.
To control fleas successfully, you need to control them in all areas where they occur: on the pet, in the house, and in the yard. Because flea larvae require high humidity and are repelled by sunlight, they usually move into cracks and crevices or burrow deep in carpet or rugs. The larvae mature in 1 to 3 weeks and then spin a small cocoon in which they develop into adults. This cocoon, or pupal stage, can be just a week long or several months long.
Occasionally, high numbers of fleas will be present in a home lawn. This usually occurs when a fleainfested pet or stray or wild animals visit the lawn often. Not allowing pets inside the house is the surest way to avoid having fleas inside the house, but not all pet owners favor this method. Whether or not pets are allowed inside, the first step in flea control is to treat the pet(s) with an effective and appropriate onpet treatment.
Fortunately, there are several highly effective treatments that can be applied to pets for preventive flea control but, successful control requires a three-part approach. 1. Adult fleas must be controlled on the pet using topical, spot-on type treatments, flea collars, dips, sprays, and so forth. 2. Immature and adult fleas must be controlled in any in-door areas frequented by the infested pet, with special attention given to pet bedding areas. You must wash your pet’s bedding and vacuum carpets regularly to complete your flea control regimen. 3. Fleas must be controlled in any infest-ed lawn areas frequented by the pet. Fleas can be controlled in the yard by applying a spray or granular insecticide labeled for use against fleas in home lawns. When attempting to control fleas in a home lawn situation, keep in mind you will not have lasting suc-cess unless fleas are also controlled on all animals that visit the area often.
Extension Publication 2597 Control Fleas on Your Pet, In Your House and in Your Yard addresses control of fleas on the pet and indoors. Extension Publication 2331 Control Insect Pests in and Around the Home Lawn address-es control of fleas outdoors. Each publication lists products that are labeled for their respective purposes.
Fleas can be present year-round, but they become much more plentiful in the spring and summer. Protecting pets from these parasites also helps protect humans and helps prevent infestations in the home and yard. Fortunately, there are several effective products that can be applied directly to the animal to control fleas. Some of these products work on both ticks and fleas, while some work only for fleas or only for ticks. Some of these products may be used on dogs or cats, while some may not be used on cats. Be sure to read the label carefully and understand what you are buying.
Visit https://extension.msstate.edu/ to find more information on controlling fleas and other insect pests.

PUMPKINS
Though it may seem as if Fall is far away, it is time to start thinking about planting your fall pumpkins. In Mississippi’s warm climate, pumpkins can be planted all summer as long as they are harvested before the first frost. Pumpkins planted from late June to mid-July are ready to be harvested just in time for Halloween.
When planting pumpkins, choosing a good location is essential for success. The best way to check if a location is good for planting is to take a soil test first. Pumpkins need well drained soil. Sandy soils with a pH between 6.0 and 6.8 are ideal for getting the best yield. Pumpkins should be planted in full sunlight areas to allow for at least six hours of sun a day.
Pumpkins need adequate watering as well. Without watering, leaves wilt and blooms will fall off lead-ing to no fruit yield. Pumpkins are very sensitive to waterlogged soil and can start to die within 48 hours of exposure to overly wet soils.
When choosing a variety, there are several factors to look for. Make sure the “days to harvest” is cor-rect for the time of planting and when you are wanting to harvest. Each variety has unique colors, textures, and sizes.
Make sure to always read the seed package for suggested tips and tricks as well as planting infor-mation. For most varieties, seeds need to be planted at a depth of 1-1.5 inches
20 YEARS AFTER KATRINA: ARE YOU AND YOUR PET PREPARED?
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, a storm that deeply impacted Plaquemines Parish. Since 1852, over 150 tropical cyclones have affected or come close to our area, reminding us of the importance of preparation. As the 2025 Hurricane Season begins on June 1st, it is important to make evacuation plans that include every member of the family including our pets as early as possible.
Remember your pet’s health and safety depend on you, so it’s your job to make sure they’re protected in case of an emergency. Just like other members of your household, emergency planning for your pets requires supplies and advance preparation. The supplies you gather for evacuation should be able to sustain your pet for at least three-five days.
If you require help with evacuation, help is available! In Plaquemines Parish, residents can reach out to the Plaquemines Parish Office of Homeland Security | Emergency Preparedness by visiting www.plaqueminesparish.gov. Additionally, you can find out more about how to prepare your pets for hurricane season by visiting www.louisianaspca.org/disasterpreparedness.
Are you ready for hurricane season?
Start with a plan!
Create a list of pet-friendly hotels, boarding facilities, and friends/family outside the strike zone. Keep in mind, many boarding options require proof of up-to-date vaccinations, so don’t wait to schedule that vet visit and keep a printed copy of your pet’s medical records handy.
Make sure your pet has a microchip!
Microchips are a permanent form of identification that help return your pet to you if you’re separated from them. If they’re not chipped, ensure their collar has current ID tags and bring printed photos of your pet in case you need to prove ownership.
Evacuation Checklist
Food and Water - Pack at least three days’ worth of food and water in airtight, waterproof containers.
Daily Essentials - Don’t forget daily medications, litter, waste bags, newspaper and comfort items like toys or treats.
Documents - Place copies of your pet’s microchip information, registration, adoption papers, vaccination documents and medical records in a clear plastic bag or waterproof container. Collar with ID tag; Harness or Leash - Your pet should be leashed and always harnessed. Pet Carrier - Use a crate or carrier large enough for your pet to stand, turn, and lie down — line it with blankets or towels for comfort.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.
Hopper is waiting for her forever home. She has been in our adoption program for several months, but because there are so many homeless cats and kittens waiting to be adopted, Hopper is still waiting. Our volunteers can’t understand why Hopper has not been chosen. “She has a great personality and she’s so cute and playful,” they say. It’s true! Hopper is one of the most agreeable little cats we’ve ever had. She gets along great with people and she does well with other cats and dogs. But Hopper does not have long hair or blue eyes or calico colors or the appearance of any particular breed such as Siamese. She’s a brown tabby so she has been passed over by people who prefer to choose a pet for its looks. If you are planning to adopt a pet, consider personality first. There are many like Hopper who are waiting to be noticed.
