DEADLY ROADS
Recently revealed statistics by the Scottish Executive show that the major roads in the North East are among the most deadly in Scotland. High on the dangerous criteria are the Ellon to Peterhead road and the Toll of Birness to Fraserburgh roads both of which are vital to the economies and citizens of Peterhead and Fraserburgh. What has been the response of the Scottish Executive and Aberdeenshire Council to this appalling situation? Ending the dual carriageway at Ellon and proposing to build a railway from Dyce to Ellon! Peterhead Councillor Alan S. Buchan who has been campaigning for decades to have the roads north of Ellon dualled, said, for some reason when it comes to the communities north of Ellon both the Scottish Executive and Aberdeenshire Council are totally dismissive. From schools to community facilities to roads, the people in Peterhead and Fraserburgh are being sidelined. It can only be hoped that new intake of Councillors and MPs will start fighting for Peterhead and Fraserburgh as I have been doing for decades.

£45 AN HOUR TAXPAYER MONEY CONCERNS
There is growing concern in Peterhead regarding the manner in which public money is being distributed via the Your Vote Your Choice which took place last Saturday. Many groups that can’t pack the voting feel that their projects are extremely deserving but are being sidelined by the a few groups that can co-ordinate a big vote. A further grievance is that a small number of groups are continually asking for funds for current expenditure such as wages. Many feel that the funds should only be available to community projects that will have a lasting impact on the community. One bid for funds on the website claimed £45 per hour plus travelling expenses to give non English speaking migrants to the area English lessons. This has raised a number of issues. Firstly, why does it cost £45 an hour to give lessons to non English speakers when fully qualified local teachers are being paid far less. Secondly, what, if any, long term benefit could this have for Peterhead. Thirdly, many people who have lived in Peterhead all their lives, applying for funds for worthy causes, are giving their time for free and have done so for many years, ask the question, if local people can give their time for free, why can’t those migrants to the town give their time free to teach English to their counter parts instead of asking for £45 per hour. Peterhead Councillor Alan S. Buchan said, I am deeply concerned by that which is taking place. The charity took home the ‘Excellence in Walking & Public Realm’ award for WOW, their year-round walk to school challenge which rewards primary school pupils who walk to school at least once a week with a monthly collectible badge, helping create healthy habits for life. Living Streets Scotland worked with local authorities and the Scottish Government's Smarter Choices, Smarter Places programme to raise awareness of travel choices and encourage more sustainable options for the journey to school in over 250 schools during 2016/17. Participating WOW schools have shown a 13 per cent increase in walking and a similar percentage reduction in cars around the school gates. As part of WOW, the innovative Travel Tracker online tool enables schools to easily record journeys. 3.4 million journeys were recorded on the Travel Tracker in schools across 18 local authority areas in Scotland during 2016. Of these journeys 2.6 million were active in part or total.

Nearly 22,000 individual investigations into missing people
Over half of those who go missing do so repeatedly. In one instance, the same person was the focus of over 170 investigations in a year. And around one per cent of people who go missing never return. Of those who went missing in the year from April 2016-Mar 2017: • 58 per cent were male, • 53 per cent were in the 13 -16 year old age group • 54 per cent were a repeat missing person • 76 per cent of those who are reported missing return with returned within 24 hours • 99 per cent of all missing people were traced or returned home safe and well. • 78 out of the 87 people traced deceased in 2016/17 were adult men, the majority of whom had not been missing before. This latest data was presented by Police Scotland officers at the 3rd International Conference on Missing Children and Adults taking place at Abertay University, Dundee from 14 – 16 June. Speaking at the event, Assistant Chief Constable Andy Cowie, said: “Police Scotland undertakes nearly 22,000 full-fledged missing person investigations each year and records around 40,000 missing person incidents. Since April 2016, we have been compiling data on missing persons and the first full year of information provides us with a very clear picture of who goes missing and the locations from which they go missing. It is also illustrative of the non-crime related demand on Scotland’s police service. “People go missing for a broad range of reasons and usually voluntarily. But we
