From our first purchase to our last, scammers are waiting to pounce on the unsuspecting, the vulnerable, the shopper short of time, the consumer looking for a bargain. July is National Scams Awareness Month and the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, local Citizens Advice and trading standards offices are seeking to raise awareness. Scams come in all shapes and sizes – from the rogue trader charging for unwanted and badly-done driveways to fake and potentially life threatening products sold online. Consider email scams about non-existent lottery wins demanding payment up front, followed up by an endless stream of more and more threatening scam emails, or investment opportunities based on thin air which can rob someone of their life savings, and the picture appears to be bleak. Research has shown that 45 to 60-year-olds are most affected, and by a wide range of scams, often losing large amounts of money. But there is also a disturbing rise in the number of 18 to 24year-olds being scammed – the group least likely to report a scam. The message during this year's Scams Awareness month is: 'Play your part, act on scams'. The general public is urged to be more aware of how they could be scammed, and to report it if they get caught out. With so many people being snagged by scammers there is no reason to be embarrassed – and every reason to report incidents and help authorities put a stop to it. Aberdeenshire Trading Standards are this year working with Royal Mail to help identify victims of scam mail so that they can be offered advice and support on how to protect themselves. Team members will conduct a number of training sessions at local depots so that postmen and women have the knowledge to enable them to identify vulnerable people who may need assistance. The service is also highlighting the Friends Against Scams website, encouraging everyone to take part in the short online training session and become a ‘Friend Against Scams’. Inverurie Business shares the buzz of electric bike deliveries with luxury hamper giveaway
Electric bikes will soon be delivering low carbon shopping in Inverurie in a project organised by Aberdeenshire Council, Inverurie Business Association and Nestrans. This month Mitchells of Inverurie will start to pilot the use of a purpose-built electric cargo bike to carry out local deliveries. When the council approached Inverurie Business Association to speak to members to trial home deliveries by electric bike, they and Mitchells were keen to get involved. Equipped with a small motor and high-capacity battery pack, the bike has a potential payload of 100 kilos. In addition to the cargo bike trial, Mitchells will also be using a new electric bike purchased with support from the Nestrans Sustainable Travel Grant Scheme. The scheme supports active and ‘greener’ travel initiatives and allows organisations to apply for a grant of between £500 and £10,000 towards sustainable travel projects such as secure cycle parking, shower/changing facilities, improvements to pedestrian access or employee training in travel planning. When we looked at our deliveries and at times the relatively short distances involved, it made us think there had to be a more environmentally friendly way to do this. Now the use of the electric bikes allows us to reduce our fuel costs, our carbon footprint and helps keep our delivery staff fit and healthy. If you think back, most of the shops in towns like Inverurie would have had a team of delivery boys and girls on bikes. With the new technology, these electric-powered bikes give us the opportunity to provide a new take on the nostalgic ‘home delivery’ with a modern twist.” Chairman of Aberdeenshire Council’s Infrastructure Services Committee and of regional transport partnership Nestrans, Peter Argyle, said cargo bikes are commonplace in continental Europe and there is “no reason” why these bikes can’t have a place in our towns. The use of the new bikes gives Mitchells a practical alternative to making numerous short van trips which are not only expensive but can also have a negative environmental impact,” he said. “Bikes are a key part of the solution for the future of our towns and in particular Aberdeenshire’s Integrated Travel Towns. “In an average European town, half of all motorised trips related to transporting goods could be shifted to bike or cargo bike. “The main focus of this scheme is to explore innovative solutions for the current challenges in transport and mobility, especially multimodal solutions to transporting goods in our towns.”

Bill has used his continuous acquisition of new research findings and advances in farming methods, agri-business and consultancy to produce sustained excellence in teaching and in guiding students.” An agriculture student commented: “When I arrived at SRUC as a spritely fresher, it was immediately obvious that Bill was dedicated to his job. He invested in us as people and encouraged us to bond as a year group before he started pushing us to academic excellence by engaging us with his vast knowledge and understanding of the agricultural world that exudes from his lectures.” “Bill is an excellent ambassador for SRUC education, said Linda Whillans . “He has contacts far and wide and keeps them because he is interested in people, an essential feature of a teacher.
