NORTH EAST WEEKLY 22ND JUNE 2017 Team GB's Luke Patience announced as Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust Ambassador
The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is delighted to announce the British Sailing Team's Luke Patience, 30, from Aberdeen, as its newest official ambassador. A leading 470 sailor from the British Sailing Team who has represented Team GB in the past two Olympics, winning a silver medal at the home Games in 2012, Luke explained why he wanted to get involved with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust: "Having raced all my life, being part of something like this is new ground for me. It's so humbling and I would love to think that I can give something back to people that need it through a sport that has given me so much". The announcement comes after Luke joined crews from the Trust's Round Britain 2017 voyage over the past month. Organised by the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, this national relay involving over 100 young people in recovery from cancer will be visiting over 60 towns and ports around the British Isles over the next four months. Luke, originally from Aberdeen but now based in Southampton, joined some of the young people taking part across the first few legs. Luke said: "I am delighted to be part of something that has become closer to my heart of late. I've seen the amazing work the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust do over many years and it's an honour to now be involved as one of their ambassadors. I'm constantly inspired by the young people." Luke will be joining a group of Patrons and Ambassadors for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust which include Radio 1 DJ and Bestival curator Rob da Bank, Volvo Ocean Race CEO Mark Turner and Luke's fellow British Sailing Team colleague Charlotte Dobson, to name just a few. Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust Chief Executive, Frank Fletcher, explained how excited the charity is to have the Olympian involved: "We are so delighted to have Luke onboard and know he will be a fantastic ambassador for the Trust with his vibrant personality being a great fit. We are all looking forward to working with him and are grateful for his commitment to help us work with more young people in recovery from Cancer". Hoping to make a difference, Luke will be actively involved, whenever he can, by joining sailing trips and promoting the work of the Trust at fundraising events. The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is a national charity that takes young people, aged between eight and 24 from across the UK, on sailing and other water-based adventures to help them rebuild their confidence after cancer treatment. In its 14th year, the Trust has grown beyond every expectation into a national charity, working with every young person Principal Treatment Centre and a growing number of Designated Units. This is an opportunity to see how the woods have developed and to learn from what has worked, what has perhaps been less successful and to discuss future management work. If you are planning to create new woodlands and wildlife habitats, or have older woods that need management, there could be much to learn. ”Alan Twatt has done much of the work himself, or with farm staff. This includes high pruning of many of the broadleaves and thinning work will commence shortly. A wide range of species were used in the original planting which allows us to make some interesting comparisons of how they have performed.” During the farm walk speakers from SAC Consulting and FCS will discuss woodland design, hedgerow and pond creation and management, species selection, riparian woodlands, pruning and thinning. After lunch on the farm there will be more detailed discussions on grants available for farm woodland management, conservation opportunities and exploring woodland design to meet various objectives. Simon added: “Not only does woodland creation help meet important national targets to address climate change and create new habitats, but would add enormously to the farm business.” A range of tools and specialist machinery are available for the farm forester and a selection will be on display at the event from a local contractor.

The Scottish SPCA is seeking a new home for nine male baby degus. The degus, who are only six weeks old, came into the care of the Society’s Aberdeen Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre as they were an unexpected litter. Centre staff are inviting the public to meet them, as degu’s can be great pets. Centre Assistant Manager Claire Tyczynska said, “They are all a little nervous just now as they are only young and are still getting used to people handling them. “With regular contact from their owners we have no doubt they’ll make great pets and provide their owners with hours of fun. “Ideally we’d like them to be rehomed in pairs or small groups as they are social creatures who enjoy the company of their own kind. NFU Scotland has welcomed a Code of Practice to accompany the beginning of the waygo amnesty. The amnesty, which was introduced by the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2016, will commence on 13 June for three years. It will allow landlords and tenants of 1991 Act, 2003 Act, and 2016 Act tenancies to seek to rectify any outstanding issues around notification of tenants’ improvements which should qualify for waygo compensation. The Code has been produced by the Tenant Farming Commissioner Bob McIntosh in partnership with industry bodies such as NFU Scotland. NFU Scotland President Andrew McCornick commented: “I am pleased to see the publication of this Code. During the passage of the 2016 Act our members consistently told us that uncertainty around waygo improvements was one of the major causes of conflict for agricultural landlords and tenants. “NFU Scotland pressed hard for the introduction of the amnesty, and was pleased to see it introduced. We welcome the publication of the accompanying Code, and would urge all landlords and tenants of agricultural tenancies to be aware of this and use it to inform negotiations where there are unnotified improvements that they wish to discuss. “The Code focusses on parties coming to a mutual agreement, and I urge landlords and tenants to enter into discussions with an open mind and in the spirit of trying to resolve any issues in an open manner. “This represents a major opportunity for landlords and tenants to get their houses in order with regards to compensation for improvements and also in the context of future rent reviews. This is a finite opportunity which lasts for only three years, and it has been made clear that there will be no extensions available to this period. As a result, it is vitally important that the industry seeks to grasp this opportunity with both hands, and I am keen to stress that parties should begin discussions as soon as they are able to.”
