Once again Aberdeenshire Council’s anti-Peterhead history is brought to the fore as they announce that they wish to have a railway built from Dyce to Ellon. This announcement comes hard on the heels of Aberdeenshire Council paying £75,000,000 to have a dual carriageway to Ellon and no further. Before any railway is installed from Dyce to Ellon the priority should be to link Peterhead and Fraserburgh, two of the largest towns in Aberdeenshire, into the dual carriageway/motorway system. As was highlighted in last week’s edition of The North East Weekly, 98.9% of £450,000,000 of Aberdeenshire Capital expenditure went to Ellon and other southern towns. Meanwhile the Scottish Executive, Aberdeen City Council and Aberdeenshire Council are in the process of spending £750,000,000 of tax payers money on the AWPR which will end at Ellon. Peterhead Councillor Alan S. Buchan said, I have been fighting a lone battle for over a decade to have a fair share of Council money spent in Peterhead. This announcement by the Council that they are pushing to have a railway built from Ellon to Dyce will have zero benefit to people living in the Peterhead/Fraserburgh area. Further, as the Council paid £75,000,000 for a dual carriageway to Ellon, a large of money coming from Peterhead and Fraserburgh, how much money will be taken from Peterhead and Fraserburgh to finance a railway that terminates at Ellon. Cllr. Buchan concluded, last month saw a shift of Peterhead Councillors, when are we going to hear from them when it comes to standing up for our town.

Deafblind Paraclimber, John, shares his extraordinary story this Deafblind

Combined sight and hearing loss is more common than we think with an estimated 394,000 people now considered to be affected by dual sensory loss. Deafblind Awareness Week runs from 26th June to 2nd July. During this time, Deafblind UK and other charities aim to raise awareness of people like John who are living with dual sensory loss. John from Birmingham was born with a 50% hearing loss and, after being diagnosed with Usher Syndrome Type 2 as a teenager, his sight gradually deteriorated. He is left with just 3% vision which is fragmented with parts missing. He wears two hearing aids and relies a lot on voice and digital equipment as well as his guide dog, Daisy and an army of supportive friends and family. John doesn’t let his condition get in the way of his love for sports and keeping fit. “I am lucky enough to have a guide runner who lives locally and we run together each week.” Back in 2010, John’s world changed forever when a friend introduced him to climbing. “I loved it from the very beginning! I immediately wanted to take it further and it wasn’t long before I was invited to join the Great Britain Paraclimbing Team.” Said John. “I climb with a sighted guide who gives me all the information I need about the route. They will describe the positions of the holds in relation to a clock face, for example “pinch hold at 2 o’clock”. As I wear hearing aids I can use a radio microphone to hear what the guide is saying to me.” Continued John. In 2015, John realised a dream he could never have imagined and became the first blind person to summit the Eiger. John says that he felt “totally elated” and enjoyed the challenge of not only the climb, but the entire project, including sourcing support, finances and equipment. John has been reselected for team GB in 2017. National sight and hearing loss charity, Deafblind UK is supporting him by recruiting a specialist volunteer to drive him to climbing centres and to be his Belayer (someone to anchor the end of the rope) and sight guide. John has received support from Deafblind UK for over 20 years and appreciates the regular calls to check he is OK. He always looks forward to receiving a birthday and Christmas card, saying “it’s reassuring to know that there is someone there, thinking of me”. Lee Bolland, Director of Community Services at Deafblind UK said: “John is an inspiration to us all and we are proud to be able to support him in his paraclimbing success. We support people to do the things they want to do without being held back by sight and hearing loss. It’s great to see that he’s found ways to get around his disability and, despite having very little sight or hearing, he has done things that many of us could only dream of!”

HARBOUR BOARD SUPPORT DOLPHIN CENTRE PROJECT Aberdeen Harbour Board has awarded a contribution £10,000 per year of funding to Greyhope Bay to support the organisation’s development costs for the next 2 years. The project has bold plans to construct a world class marine education and visitor centre at Greyhope Bay, just around the corner from Torry Battery, and will create a unique platform to view our visiting dolphins and wildlife. Funding granted through Aberdeen Harbour Board’s Community Action Fund will support Greyhope Bay in taking the project to the next stage in pre-planning consultation, development of planning drawings and submission of planning application. Greyhope Bay has had a recent swell of media and local support after hosting an exciting weekend of events in a glass-fronted marquee at the site to show the north-east community all that Greyhope Bay could offer. The weekend included a Friday night gala dinner and a family fun day on the Saturday where thousands made the trip to the site to get a flavour of what the centre could offer - showing there is a lot of interest in the project. The Greyhope Bay development has synergy with the Aberdeen Harbour expansion in to Nigg Bay, and could in part maximise the potential impact of improvements being delivered, including extending and enhancing public use of the coastline. Colin Parker, Chief Executive of Aberdeen Harbour Board commented, “Building on our earlier support for this key project our Board strongly believed that further funding was appropriate. A marine education facility at this point would not only represent a great asset for the local community, city and region, it could also become an important visitor attraction for tourists including cruise ship passengers from all over the world. Operation Trinity launched in Aberdeen

An annual operation which has seen almost 150 motorbikes seized in the last two years alone, and scores of people charged, has been launched today in Aberdeen. Operation Trinity is aimed at targeting individuals who cause a nuisance in their communities by riding motorcycles illegally or in a dangerous way. This year is the ninth year that the operation has taken place and is a direct result of concerns raised by the local communities across the city about the anti-social use of motorbikes and the negative behaviour associated with it. As in previous years, a dedicated team of officers will be working alongside colleagues from the Roads Policing Unit, City Wardens, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Aberdeen Community Safety Hub, as well as the public to tackle the issue. Inspector Jon Millar, of the Mastrick Community Policing Team, said: "Trinity is a tried and tested operation which has seen success over the years. Over the last two summers, 144 motorbikes were seized with 63 people charged in 2015 and 76 people charged in 2016. We generally see an increase in the anti-social use of motorbikes once the nights start getting lighter which is why we launch this operation every May. "Those who carry out these offences choose to ride motorbikes at speed around particular areas however the risk they pose to themselves and others shouldn't be underestimated.

"The vast majority of motorcyclists and motorists obey the law but there is still a small minority who ignore traffic rules and ride dangerously and irresponsibly, causing a menace and more importantly a danger to the public. "This is not acceptable and we will continue to target those intent on behaving in this way. "Anti-social motorcycle use can be anything from speeding, riding on footpaths and open land to not wearing the right protective clothing, which carries a risk for not only the public, but also the rider themselves. "There are a minority of people that we come into contact with who are using their own motorbikes legitimately, however they don't realise they are committing an offence by driving their motorbike off road, and so it is important that people take time to make sure they are safe. "The legal definition of a road is very broad ranging and many people we encounter in 'off road' situations are unaware of this fact. The need to be 'off road' legal is now as important as being 'on road' legal and users of these vehicles need to be sure of their facts. "Matters such as not having the landowners permission, a driving licence, motor insurance and a test certificate are offences which officers have encountered in 'off road' situations and while acknowledging these machines are fun to use, the simple message is to make sure you're legal before you venture out." Inspector Millar added that it is a priority for Police Scotland to trace those responsible for causing a danger in communities and that partnership work with colleagues such as Aberdeen City Council and communities will continue. He said: "We will have uniformed and plain clothed staff patrolling, supported by specialist staff and additional partner agencies, such as the City Wardens. Continued on Page 9

From Page 7 "We will make use of public space CCTV and look to use portable wifi cameras from Aberdeen City Council. "Officers will also make full use of their body worn and vehicle mounted CCTV cameras in order to secure video footage as evidence. "Members of our local Police Scotland Youth Volunteers will also be providing assistance by delivering advice leaflets on motorcycle misuse and annoyance to households in communities where the bikes are being driven. "The leaflet reinforces our message to the public to continue to report incidents to us. "Information from the public is really important in helping us tackle this issue. When you see motorbikes being misused and driven dangerously please report it to us. The more details you can supply the better. This includes descriptions of the bikes, riders and location details. "Also, if you know who the offenders are, tell us. If you know where the bikes are being stored, tell us. "We are committed to following up every line of enquiry in order to detect those responsible for driving motorbikes dangerously. "We are also pleased to be working with our partners on the Aberdeen Motorbike Project for Educational Development. We hope that this project will help educate young people on how to enjoy riding motorbikes legally and responsibly and therefore divert them away from offending behaviour." Joanne Larsen, Community Safety Hub Service Manager said: “Motorcycle misuse is a huge concern within all of our communities and we know that a large number of those involved are young people who are inexperienced and driving illegally without proper safety gear. The consequences of driving dangerously can have devastating effects and should never be underestimated. “Aberdeen City Council has recently launched a new diversionary activity AMPED (Aberdeen Motorcycle Project for Educational Development). Working in partnership with Police Scotland and SFRS our aim is to educate young people on the dangers of driving illegally as well as giving them a facility to ride bikes safely, with proper instruction and ultimately divert them away from offending. “I am delighted that Operation Trinity is about to embark on its ninth successive year and have no doubt, with the growing help and support of the public and our partners that it will have even greater success than in previous years.” Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Watch Manager Steven Thomson said: “Motorcycle annoyance often results in the attendance of fire appliances as on many occasions stolen vehicles will be abandoned and set on fire. This type of reckless activity presents not only a danger to the motorcyclists but also to other road users and the wider community. “We are never complacent and we continue to work closely with our partners at Police Scotland to stamp out such anti-social behaviour from occurring within the city. “However we always endeavour to seek opportunities to work with young people wherever possible to educate them about the dangers and stay safe.” Call for an appointment Anyone wishing to report information that BLACKHOUSE CIRCLE, BLACKHOUSE IND. Scottish SPCA fawn warning

The Scottish SPCA is caring for a young orphaned deer fawn. Scotland’s animal welfare charity was alerted on 26 May after the fawn’s mother was killed in a road accident in Aberdeen. The fawn is now being rehabilitated at the charity’s National Wildlife Rescue Centre in Fishcross, where she has been named Martini. Centre manager Colin Seddon said, “We are caring for five fawns at the moment, all of which are about one to two weeks old.Like all fawns orphaned at such a young age, Martini and the others need a lot of one to one attention as they are still being bottle fed. “Once they are able to self-feed we’ll take a more hands-off approach until they’re ready to be returned to their natural habitat. We’ll choose a carefully selected site where the fawns will be able to integrate with an existing group of roe deer.” The Scottish SPCA is warning members of the public not to approach baby deer unless there is a welfare concern, as there clearly was in Martini’s case. Colin added, “Fawns are left alone from a very early age as their mothers go off foraging. They are left curled up under bushes or in long grasses to keep hidden from potential predators but are often disturbed by dogs and humans. Our advice is to leave the fawn alone, unless showing signs of distress and calling out, and return in 24 hours as the mother will likely have moved it. If it has not been moved at this stage but is still not calling or showing any signs of distress, the mother has probably come back and fed it. “To be sure a fawn has been abandoned it must be observed from a distance for at least 12 hours. A fawn that has been truly abandoned will get up from its hiding place and start calling for its mother. “Anyone who comes across a deer fawn can call our animal helpline on 03000 999 999 for advice.”

SRUC’s Garden Design students have excelled themselves with their creativity and imagination as their mysterious “murder garden” won a Gold Award at Gardening Scotland. Their Tudor themed show garden “Hortus Homicida” was designed and created by 2nd year students at SRUC’s Edinburgh campus and was competing with seven gardens showcasing the very best of Scottish garden design. The garden commemorates the 450th anniversary of Old North School, King Street, Peterhead one of Scotland’s most infamous unresolved crimes: the murder of Lord Darnley the husband of Mary Queen of Scots. We teach Classical, Traditional, Jazz, Rock & Pop The students’ entry aims to create a romanticised version of a Music on Piano, Keyboard, Singing, Theory, monastic garden to represent where Lord Darnley’s body was found. They used native breeds that would have been around at the Acoustic and Electrical Guitars, Bass Guitar, time and plants with specific meanings to emphasise the story behind their garden. To bring the display to life students dressed in Drums, Percussion, Recorder, Flute, Saxophone, historic outfits to present the garden and guide people through an Violin, Viola, Mandolin, Banjo and more.. interactive Cluedo-like game giving them a chance to try and solve the mystery. The eight students, from seven different countries, All Abilities Catered for, plus we have a Band have been prepping the garden since the beginning of the year and Practice Room and a Recording Studio. have also gone on historical visits to learn more about the story behind the garden – including a visit to the Edinburgh University Anatomical Museum to visit Lord Darnley’s skull. The idea behind the garden came from mature student Heath Urquhart who left his farm in New Zealand in 2015 to pursue his dream of working in horticulture by studying at SRUC. Heath said: “We are thrilled to have won the top prize possible! It has been an amazing week finally building the garden and seeing our ideas come to life. It has been a great team effort and we have all learnt a huge amount from the process. “We want to use the garden to teach people about a moment that changed Scottish history and Gardening Scotland is a great platform for us with over 30,000 visitors expected. We are looking forward to sharing the story behind our garden with people over the weekend.” Students and staff from SRUC’s Oatridge campus are also playing an important role at Gardening Scotland. They have helped set up, run and put entries into the Pallet and Planter Garden Competition and supported the dressing of the main Floral Hall. They will also be running workshops on hard landscaping and the Japanese art of Kokedama.

CFP exit the only way forward for industry, says SFF chief in election message Scottish Fishermen’s Federation chief executive Bertie Armstrong has insisted that exiting the Common Fisheries Policy is the only way forward for the industry. In a message to politicians ahead of the General Election next week, he said fishermen simply would not agree to anything which takes them back into a system that deprives them of 60 per cent of the catch. He said: “It’s been a while since fishing mattered so much in a UK General Election. That’s because we are coming out of the EU and while most people are aware that Brexit is a big deal for fishing, they are perhaps not sure why. Actually it’s easy to understand, and with polling just days away, every politician and everyone in or connected with the fishing industry and its communities needs to know what is at stake. “When you hear of manifesto promises to look after our fishing industry, there is only one single way that this can be achieved – by permanently leaving the EU and the Common Fisheries Policy. “Whatever anyone may have thought of the value of EU membership, that specific component – the CFP – is plain bad for us. The reason is not that fishermen just want more fish or less regulation – the real problem is the conditions accepted on entry in 1973. These oblige us to give away annually some 60% of our fish and shellfish resource. That’s a hell of a ticket price, paid up every year since. But we’re leaving, and we simply cannot agree to anything that takes us back to that. “How on earth did it happen in the first place? The easy-to-understand background is that when we joined in 1973, everyone fished where they liked, as hard as they liked. There were no quotas. On joining, this ‘common access’ was adopted as a fundamental principle, and when it became obvious that we were in a downward spiral of overfishing, limits were introduced, quite correctly. Crucially, each Member State’s share of the now restricted catch was fixed on the track record from the bad old days when everybody fished everywhere, without limits. This was named ‘Relative Stability’ and persists until today – hence the 60% allocation to others of fish our waters.
