PETERHEAD BID CHALLENGE

A meeting was recently held by some of Peterhead’s business people to attempt to have Peterhead’s Town Centre designated as a Business Improvement District (BID). Out of the 250 town centre business, about 20 turned out to hear those leading the project. To become a BID area at least 50% of the businesses by number and by rateable value have to agree. After a BID has been agreed, all businesses in the BID area have to pay an annual levy in line with the rateable value of the individual business irrespective of whether or not they voted for or against the BID. It is reckoned that such a levy, which is paid above the existing business rates, would yield around £100,000 for town centre investment. At the moment, many town centre business are heavily taxed with rates, water charges, VAT, National Insurance, etc. Whether a business is for or against the BID, the key question is will it yield value for money. From Page 1: The meeting heard that much of the annual levy was to be used on street and gutter cleaning, gull scarring and litter. However, aren’t these Council tasks which both businesses and public pay for via their rates and Council Tax. Thus, if the Peterhead BID simply releases funds to the Council so they can spend the money saved in Peterhead on other town centres, such as Inverurie or Ellon, which are already extremely well maintained without BID money, once again Peterhead could find itself short changed by the Council. Over the last five years Aberdeenshire Council spent £450,000,000 on capital projects. Only £5 million of this figure was spent in the largest town in Aberdeenshire. This 1⅛ % of spending went into the new Council HQ at Buchan House which was of no advantage to the town but annually saved the Council £750,000. Peterhead should have been given its 18% population share of Capital expenditure (£81,000,000) while the annual savings of £750,000 made from Buchan House should have been used to regenerate Peterhead.

Young people in recovery from cancer set sail Round Britain with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust

After months in the planning, today marked the start of an exciting national project in Largs, Scotland; the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust Round Britain 2017. This 2,400 mile voyage will see over 100 young people take part in a national sailing relay around the British Isles, stopping at over 60 towns and ports in a celebration of recovery, achievement and potential. Largs is home to the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust's northern base where they support young people in recovery from cancer and help them rebuild their confidence following treatment. Dame Ellen MacArthur, founding patron of the Trust, officially started the voyage as the Trust's 44ft flagship yacht Moonspray crossed the start line at 1415. Speaking to supporters in Largs Sailing Club in advance Ellen said, "Round Britain 2017 gives us the ability to take the message of the Trust, but most importantly the young people who have sailed with the Trust over the years, around the country to let people know what we do, how we do it and to let the public meet the young people and see for themselves what this is all about." Guests including families of the crew and Trust supporters were invited to join the crew at Largs Sailing Club in advance of them crossing the start line, where they had a chance to ask questions to some of the young people in recovery from cancer taking part. Krissi who is 21 from Hertfordshire first sailed with the Trust in 2009 and has returned for many trips since. Now joining the Round Britain 2017 crew for leg 1 as a volunteer for the Trust, Krissi explained the difference the Trust makes to young people like herself: "As a young person, the fact that you get the opportunity to be in a situation with people who are like you, and have had the same or similar experience to you, is just an amazing thing. Because you get put back into school where everyone just views you as the 'ill' one, that just becomes your personality. When sailing with the Trust, where actually everyone was ill, you get to understand who you are as a person and make yourself into an older person and grow so much. As a graduate volunteer, seeing the other young people grow so much over the four day trips is an amazing experience." The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is a national charity taking young people aged between eight and 24 on sailing trips to help them rebuild their confidence after cancer treatment and re-engage with education, employment and society. Uniquely, the charity offers long-term support to the young people they work. Round Britain 2017 forms part of the 'return to sail' trips with all the young people taking part having previously sailed with the Trust, whether that be a year ago or ten years ago. Frank Fletcher, CEO of the Trust said, "To find the confidence to re-imagine a positive future following a cancer diagnosis, young people need support over time." He continued, "That is why today we're embarking on arguably our most ambitious project ever – the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust Round Britain 2017. The memories these young people make and the personal triumphs they will achieve will help bring back into focus positive options for their futures." The intrepid Round Britain crew are now making their way up the Firth of Clyde to Glasgow where Ellen will meet the crew and they will join young people still undergoing treatment for cancer from the Royal Hospital for Sick Children to share their own experiences of treatment. Look out for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust Round Britain 2017 crew as they moor up in Glasgow's Pacific Quay between 24 to 26 May and follow as they move port to port through Scotland over the coming month. Share the inspiring stories of the young people involved by visiting ellenmacarthurcancertrust.org/round-britain-2017.

Sir, Living Streets’ Walk to School Week is over for another year and we’d like to thank everyone in Scotland who contributed to making it a massive success. Over 11,000 pupils in 105 schools in Scotland joined in with pupils across the UK to enjoy the many benefits of walking to school. We know that schools become healthier and happier places when children walk to school. The Chief Medical Officer recommends that children are active for 60 minutes a day and walking to school is a free, accessible and easy way for children to contribute to this target. Despite these benefits, the number of children walking to school is in decline with just 43 per cent of children in Scotland making the journey on foot. At Living Streets, we are committed to reversing this decline and are asking for town and city leaders to prioritise making school walking routes safer, to help to prevent problems associated with a lack of walking, including childhood obesity and air pollution. Just because the week of celebration is over, it doesn’t mean families have to stop walking. WOW is our year-round walk to school challenge, so they can continue to experience the benefits of walking to school all year-round, just visit livingstreets.org.uk/wow to find out more. Once again, a huge thank you and congratulations to everyone who took part in this year’s Walk to School Week – with your help we’ll get more children experiencing a healthy and happy walk to school. PETERHEAD MUSIC & ROCK SCHOOL

Last week two EU vessels, probably fishing in UK waters, landed thousands of tonnes of sandeels at Peterhead Harbours. While this may not seem unusual Old North School, King Street, Peterhead to those not involved in the fishing industry, this type of fishing, commonly known as ‘industrial fishing’, does We teach Classical, Traditional, Jazz, Rock & Pop enormous damage to the marine environment. Sandeels are the backbone of the marine food chain and Music on Piano, Keyboard, Singing, Theory, are eaten by most fish species as well as many sea Acoustic and Electrical Guitars, Bass Guitar, mammals from dolphins to whales and are widely Drums, Percussion, Recorder, Flute, Saxophone, consumed by most seabirds. Thus the sandeel can be Violin, Viola, Mandolin, Banjo and more.. regarded as the lynchpin of the marine environment. Last year on St Kilda, which is a Marine Conservation All Abilities Catered for, plus we have a Band area where there is little fishing activity, saw only one Practice Room and a Recording Studio. pair of Kittiwakes breed but even this pair failed to raise their chick. St Kilda once had a huge population of Kittiwakes but it has been wiped out due to the loss of the bird’s food supply. Peterhead Councillor Alan S. Buchan, who spent decades in the fishing industry, said, these two landings into Peterhead are the tip of the iceberg. Scandinavian boats will only land into Peterhead if their own fishmeal factories can’t cope with the sandeels being landed at their home ports. Cllr. Buchan added, sandeels have only one market which is to be turned into fish meal to be fed to animals such as pigs or used in the salmon farming industry. The EU have been very quick to put bans and restrictions on the UK fleet that doesn’t fish for sandeels. If the EU are not going to act on this marine vandalism, the UK Government should immediately ban all sandeel fishing in UK waters.

End for Grampian Houston Junior Golf but legacy lives on

After 25 years, 150 golfers and 30 scholarships, Grampian Houston Junior Golf is bowing out in its current form – but it’s not the end of the golfing connection for young people in the North and North-East of Scotland. Established by Bruce Davidson, former professional at Aberdeen’s Kings Links Golf Centre, the aim of Grampian Houston Junior Golf was to give young players from the region scholarship opportunities in the US, allowing them to study at college or university while playing competitive golf. Recognised as the UK’s most successful golf scholarship programme for young people, Grampian Houston Junior Golf, was a non-profit making organisation that raised money through its annual Pro-Am tournament. Since it was founded in 1992, the scheme has seen almost 150 golfers take part in the biannual 10-day tours, and 30 young men and women going on to scholarships in America. Supported by generous sponsorship from a number of individuals and businesses from across the north and North-East, Houston and Dubai, the programme gave young golfers the experience of a lifetime, especially at a time when a golf scholarship was less attainable. However, organisers have recognised that the routes to scholarship have changed out of all recognition over the past 25 years, and after careful consideration, decided that the unique position of Grampian Houston Junior Golf has been supplanted by a number of other avenues now open to young people. These include various scouting programmes, established companies that assist with college applications and the mainstream use of video and the internet which has allowed instant, continuous assessment of potential college applicants. Together, these options make a golf scholarship more accessible than organisers could have imagined two decades ago. However, it’s not the end of the golfing connection for young people in the north and northeast of Scotland. While Grampian Houston Junior Golf has had its last tour, there remains a section of the golfing community that deserves continued attention and support, and that is the group of talented players whose family circumstances would make collegiate golf unaffordable and unattainable. During the past three years, Bruce Davidson has been developing a new golfing venture in South Carolina – Congaree – the world’s first truly philanthropic golf club and two youngsters from the north and north east of Scotland are due to be selected, as part of 12 from around the world, for a pilot residential programme called Congaree Global Golf Initiative, which will allow them the opportunity to play and study in the US. Bruce Davidson explained: “Since inception, Grampian Houston Junior Golf has given life changing opportunities to young men and women from our area of Scotland who otherwise would not have been so fortunate to obtain golf scholarships. There is no doubt in my mind that playing and competing in the US college system is an important part in the development of any athlete as witnessed by the conveyor belt of new talent playing in the European and PGA tours. We are delighted that young people will continue to be given access to these life-changing opportunities through the Congaree Global Golf Initiative.” To celebrate the success achieved through Grampian Houston Junior Golf over the past 25 years, organisers are holding a final celebration, on Friday, July 28 at Royal Aberdeen Golf Course and the Marcliffe Hotel and Spa. The special silver anniverCall for an appointment sary event will include a round of golf BLACKHOUSE CIRCLE, BLACKHOUSE IND. EST. amongst amateurs and professionals, followed by an evening of dinner and special PETERHEAD. TEL: 01779 474400. MOB: 07833 367577 entertainment, to mark the programme’s Email: kenny.nesc@hotmail.co.uk conclusion in its current form as well as celebrate the success story it proved to be. The organisers hope that the event will allow them to fully thank the individuals and companies for their exceptional long-term support to the programme with no pressure to raise money. John Connon, Chairman of Grampian Houston Junior Golf, added: “The on-going support received from both Houston and the north -east for Grampian Houston Junior Golf has been more generous than we could have imagined and to honour this we are delighted to be having one last swing on the golf course, followed by a well-deserved celebration.”

SCHOOL MILK SCHEME OFFERS OPPORTUNITY FOR DAIRY

NFU Scotland has called for Scotland’s School Milk Scheme to be expanded, allowing the nation’s schoolchildren to enjoy fresh, tasty milk and have local cheese and yoghurt added to the menu. The EU Scheme currently allows local authorities in Scotland to claim funding to subsidise their school milk schemes. Responding to the Scottish Government consultation on the EU School Milk Scheme, the Union has asked for an expanded range of high quality Scottish dairy produce to be supported by an educational package that explains the many benefits of dairy in the diet to school children and teachers. NFU Scotland strongly supports the commission’s ambition that, for the long-term health of the nation, the scheme plays an effective role in reversing the ongoing decline in the consumption of nutritious dairy products. NFU Scotland’s Milk Committee chairman James Rankin, who milks cows at Badenheath Farm near Cumbernauld said: “The many health benefits of including dairy in the diet are well recognised but this scheme presents the opportunity to see the offering to Scotland’s schoolchildren go beyond fresh, tasty milk and bring in some of the fantastic cheeses and yoghurts we produce here in Scotland. “The scheme also presents a chance to strengthen links between schoolchildren and farmers and the various types of food they produce. Changing the focus of the school milk scheme will boost the consumption of dairy produce in the long term and use our education system to instil healthy eating habits. The old and new science clearly proves that dairy produce is good for children, and this scheme is an ideal opportunity to educate not only the school children but also, in many cases, their teachers and classroom assistants. Education is key to tackling the huge challenge of obesity, osteoporosis and unhealthy eating habits, and dairy can play a vital and important role.”

Scotland to host historic dialogue between global leaders in

Edinburgh, 22 May 2017: Middle East Global Advisors, a leading financial intelligence platform spearheading the agenda of sustainable and inclusive finance, announced that it will convene the second edition of the much-coveted Global Ethical Finance Forum (GEFF) on September 13th and 14th in Edinburgh, Scotland. Based on a strategic partnership with Islamic Finance Council UK (UKIFC), the Forum will be held under the patronage of the Scottish Government, and will be hosted by the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), building upon the legacy of the inaugural Forum held in September 2015. The theme for GEFF 2017 - “Ethical Finance: Merging Profit & Purpose”, is in line with the Forum’s aspiration to serve as a platform of convergence and collaboration across the responsible finance universe, and to forge a vision for a more inclusive and sustainable financial system. GEFF will reinforce its reputation as the pre-eminent gathering of the most influential global leaders from the Banking, Socially Responsible Investing (SRI), Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) and faith-based finance sectors. GEFF 2017 will take place on September 13th and 14th at the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS)’s prestigious Conference Centre in Edinburgh. Speaking ahead of GEFF 2017, Ehsan Abbas, Chairman of Middle East Global Advisors, said: “Upon its inception, the vision as-

cribed to GEFF was to serve as a catalyst to unlock new opportunities for growth, provide unique solutions for key issues and chart the roadmap for the ethical finance industry.” Reflecting on the two years since the ground-breaking forum was launched, Mr. Abbas said, “GEFF 2017 will take stock of developments encompassing the responsible finance universe and raise awareness about the moral limits of financial markets which were highlighted during the recent financial crisis. Whilst the core segments of ethical finance-Banking, SRI, ESG and Islamic finance share the same values-based approach, they are separated by boundaries of geography, perception and methodology. Converging them onto one platform will strengthen the global value proposition of ethical finance. We look forward to convening GEFF 2017.” Scotland is a fitting destination for hosting the narrative due to its strong heritage in ethical finance which includes the creation of financial institutions dating back to the development of savings banks by Rev. Henry Duncan. Since GEFF 2015, Scotland has forged ahead as a leader in ethical finance with: Glasgow-based UKIFC winning the Ethical Finance Innovation and Challenge Award in the UAE; a government-backed Ethical Finance Hub being established; the world’s first interfaith joint financial services initiative between Muslims and Christians being launched; and Al Rayan Bank opening its first Scottish office. A testament to the scale and impact of the Forum in terms of cultivating exclusive experiences for its attendees, GEFF will once again include an exclusive Civic Reception at Edinburgh Castle, which will be hosted by the Scottish Government. Speaking on behalf of the GEFF’s Strategic Partner, the Islamic Finance Council UK (UKIFC), Omar Shaikh, Advisory Board Member, Islamic Finance Council UK (UKIFC) said, “Following overwhelmingly positive feedback from GEFF 2015, we are delighted to bring the forum back to Edinburgh. We are committed to creating socially responsible and fairer economies and hosting GEFF 2017 will further Scotland’s reputation as a worldwide industry leader in ethical finance.” This year’s event will take place within the context of unprecedented political and economic times. Political developments in the US, UK and Europe, including the rise of populist leaders, have sparked domestic debates around globalization and protectionism.

Rogues wanted! – lucrative course for disease police for a vital Scottish industry

The health and reputation of a Scottish industry worth around £100 million a year depends on the work of “tattie roguers” - and it needs more of the potato disease police. Finding a well paid summer job in the present economic climate won’t be easy, but for any “rogues” successfully completing a five day course in June at the Scotland’s Rural College Campus in Aberdeen there is a real opportunity to earn some cash, develop a tan and make friends for life. Only roguers have the skills, senses and stamina to identify plants with diseases and root out the threats to Scotland’s international reputation for disease free seed potatoes. The crops, grown in fields on the east side of the country, gained their reputation because our cooler summers and colder winters mean there are far fewer aphids that carry viral diseases. Seed potatoes are the smaller tubers other growers plant to grow the “ware” crops we buy to eat. Scotland produces 80% of the seed potatoes in the UK with over 200 growers producing 230,000 tonnes, mainly for worldwide export. Over 80,000 tonnes go to non EU countries like Egypt while EU customers include the UK, the Canaries, Cyprus and Spain. In June this year Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) will be training the next batch of the potato disease police. The course at our Aberdeen Campus is scheduled to run from 19 – 23 June. Innes Jessiman, Potato Consultant with SAC Consulting (part of SRUC), said: “Once the tattie roguers have learned to identify different varieties, spot signs of key diseases or pests, and have received their certificate, they are a key component in the protection of this financially vital crop. “It is a skilled job with real responsibility - but one that is ideal for somebody keen on spending the summer out of doors instead of an office. “Small teams walk the growing crops, removing any diseased plants to reduce spread. Once qualified, roguers can earn £10 - £15 an hour, depending on experience. That can equate to over £3,500 pounds in a season and with annual refresher courses it is a summer job that can last for years.” Each course will cost £375 but is VAT exempt. As students will train using growing crops the dates may change depending on the growing season. Accommodation at Halls of Residence may be available during the course at a special rate for course participants from outlying areas such as Angus, Perthshire and Fife.
