Keep it Wild campaign launched as Scotland’s Wild Land Areas come under threat from industrial-scale development

Government urged to update planning rules as YouGov poll finds 4 in 5 Scots back greater protection for Wild Land Areas Imminent decision over Court of Session Creag Riabhach wind farm case highlights ongoing uncertainty about protection of Wild Land Areas. One of the UK’s leading conservation bodies has today launched a new national campaign for greater protection of Scotland’s Wild Land Areas, amid concern that a significant case at the Court of Session potentially threatens the future of Scotland’s unique landscapes. The John Muir Trust’s “Keep It Wild” campaign calls on the Scottish Government to use the forthcoming Planning Bill to give Wild Land Areas protection from industrial-scale development, similar to the protection already in place for windfarms in National Parks and NSAs. The campaign comes as the Court of Session in Edinburgh is set to decide a judicial review of a decision to approve Creag Riabhach wind farm in Altnaharra that would allow the development of 22-turbines up to 125m tall, including five within Wild Land Area 37. The court case highlights that the Scottish Government said in June 2014 that they intended to give strengthened protection for Wild Land Areas. However, the recent government approval for the Creag Riabhach development has cast doubt on this, as the permission granted to the developers was the first to encroach the boundaries of a designated Wild Land Area. To mark the launch of the Keep it Wild campaign, the Trust has released a new YouGov poll which reveals 80 per cent backed the proposition that Scotland’s Wild Land Areas should receive continued protection from large-scale infrastructure development. An absolute majority – 52 per cent – ‘strongly agree’ that “Wild Land Areas should continue to be protected from large -scale infrastructure, such as industrial-scale wind farms, major electricity transmission and super-quarries”, while a further 28 per cent ‘tend to agree’. Just five per cent ‘tend to disagree’ with this wild land protection, while the number who ‘strongly disagree‘ is negligible, registering zero per cent in the YouGov poll. Of the remainder, 12 per cent ‘neither agree nor disagree’ with the proposals, with three per cent undecided. Support for wild land protection is overwhelming among all age groups and geographical regions. The Highlands and Islands, where most of Scotland’s wild land is located, has the highest proportion of people (60 per cent) who strongly agree with the protection of Wild Land Areas. Master Locksmiths Association issues home security advice to help carers

According to the most recent report by Age UK, two million people over 75 live alone [1]. If you’re one of the UK’s many carers looking after a parent or elderly relative who lives on their own, it’s important to take adaptive measures to ensure they are as safe and secure as possible in their home. With Carers Week, which aims to raise awareness of carers and the challenges they face, taking place 12-18 June, Dr Steffan George, Managing Director of the Master Locksmiths Association – the leading trade association for the locksmithing industry – says: “While it’s important to think about security, with a vulnerable homeowner, you need to consider safety too. Getting the balance right can be difficult, but it’s important that you take the time to research the best options and ensure you have taken all the measures necessary to keep your loved one safe and secure in their home. “There’s lots to think about – for example, it’s important to avoid the situation of entrapment – so as well as ensuring burglars can’t easily break into the property, you have to ensure you will be able to gain entry both in the case of an emergency and on a day-to-day basis if your loved one is incapable of answering the door.” Here, Dr Steffan George shares his expert advice on the measures you can take to ensure your loved one is as safe and secure as possible in their home, and you have peace of mind.

1. Think about access

Firstly, ensure you can gain access to the home in a way that doesn’t jeopardise security. If the person you are caring for is unable to answer the door, thinking about alternative ways to access is a must, but even if they are capable of answering the door, a key safe should be installed in case of emergency. Coded key safes help ensure those who require access can get it as efficiently as possible – whether this be yourself, a paramedic or another trusted carer. However, in order to ensure security then key safes that have been independently tested by companies such as Sold Secure (www.soldsecure.com) should be used.

2. Check the exterior

Your loved one may not be able to keep on top of their own garden but it’s important that it isn’t left to its own devices – overgrown shrubbery, especially between houses, beside entrances and surrounding windows, can provide the perfect cover for those looking to break in. Ensure any HARBOUR STREET, BODDAM. AB42 3AU tools are stored away safely within a shed or outhouse, and for extra secuground anchors, chains and padlocks, and again, ensure they have been independently tested.

3. Make security user-friendly

Is your relative suffering from reduced visibility or loss of strength? If so, they may struggle with locking up or manoeuvring handles. Invest in key turners – plastic handles designed to attach to a key at one end, rubber handle covers which provide better grip or even remote locking which works like a car’s central locking system, and allows the user to secure their property simply and from a distance.

4. Invest in deterrents

Do your best to make the home look as busy as possible particularly if your loved one is living on their own. Timer lighting helps make a house look occupied and can give the impression there is more than one person within the property. A fake TV, which works on a timer to emit multi-coloured LED lights – similar to that of a real television - works to do the same, but uses less power than a standard lamp is a great idea too. Outdoor lights with motion sensors are a must too, ensure they illuminate paths, steps and any areas that have obstacles or uneven surfaces therefore they will double up as a safety precaution.

5. Keep valuables out of sight If the person you are caring for owns expensive items that they do not wear or use frequently – such

as jewellery, computers, ornaments and other items - which could attract an opportunist thief, make sure they are kept out of sight and away from windows. Better still, lock them in a professionally specified and installed safe. A safe is also an ideal location to leave spare sets of keys – if an intruder does manage to get in, the last thing you want is for them to get their hands on permanent access to the home. For further advice on any of the above, contact your local MLA approved locksmith who can give you advice on bespoke security solutions for your loved one’s property and specific needs and requirements, as well as helping with installation.

North East Comic Creator First KickStarter Campaign Underway

‘Toy Story meets The Walking Dead’ in Toy-Z: The Ballad of Mr Huggles ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND, Nicci Thompson (Crow House, film director) and co-creator Cliff Hughes have launched the KickStarter campaign for their first comic TOY-Z: THE BALLAD OF MR HUGGLES. Hughes described it as “Toy Story meets The Walking Dead” before elaborating “Don’t be fooled by the cartoon look of Ammar Al-Chalabi’s art work, this is a story for grown ups, dealing with loss, grief and finding your place in the world again after an unexpected life change. Which is something I think most people go through at some point and will be able to relate to.” Set in a world similar to that of Disney/Pixar's 'Toy Story' after an apocalyptic event has turned most of mankind into zombies. Two toys, Kitty-Kat and Robert the Robot, who have very different backgrounds, find themselves thrown together in a world where humans have no need for them anymore. In this first issue of the ongoing series the pair of toys meet Mr Huggles, something which triggers a chain of events that will change all of their lives forever. •WINDOWS & DOORS •SEALED UNITS Artwork is provided by Dutch graphic designer and comic crea•FASCIA & SOFFITS •SAFETY GLASS tor Ammar Al-Chalabi (Wart, •CONSERVATORIES web-comic series) and cover art •BEVELLED GLASS by English illustrator and model •SUNROOMS Charlotte Herbert (better known as alternative model Char•GARAGE CONVERSIONS •GLAZING REPAIRS lotte Something). Scottish SPCA hits the right note with Sandi Thom

The Scottish SPCA welcomed Scottish singer-song writer and animal lover Sandi Thom to their centre in Aberdeen on Saturday 3 June. Scotland’s animal welfare charity was delighted to have Sandi at the centre alongside her brother, Chris, who is also a dedicated animal lover. Centre Manager Graeme Innes said, “We loved having Sandi at our centre, she really bonded with one of our boxers who isn’t available for rehoming yet. “As an animal lover herself she seemed really at home with the horses, cats, dogs and other animals in our care.” Sandi Thom said, “I was back in the area playing at the Grampian Festival and came across the Scottish SPCA centre whilst out on a walk which just happens to be moments away from my mums house! “I’ve worked closely with animals all my life and always try to raise awareness of how amazing rescue pets are so I was very keen to visit the centre. “I strongly urge anyone who’s looking for a new pet to consider visiting their local Scottish SPCA centre and rehoming a pet in need of a second chance!” Anyone interested in rehoming an animal should visit the Scottish SPCA animal rehoming page at www.scottishspca.org/rehome.

Top vet dog-tired of pug health problems, highlights BBC Radio 4 Today Celebrities, advertisers and the public must stop normalising flat-faced dogs’ health problems for the sake of animal welfare, said British Veterinary Association (BVA) President Gudrun Ravetz this morning on BBC Radio 4’s Today. Talking on the programme about the health and welfare issues faced by flat-faced or brachycephalic dogs such as Pugs, French bulldogs and British bulldogs, the BVA President made it clear that what is seen as “normal” and cute for these dogs, such as snorting and snuffling, is in reality a result of debilitating respiratory problems due to the squashed faces that have made them the dogs du jour. The problems are so severe that many of these dogs suffer breathing difficulties even when doing day-to-day activities like walking or eating. Today also outlined a recent Kennel Club report showed that all flat-faced breeds have experienced a huge boom in popularity recently, with the French bulldog soon set to be the most popular breed in the UK. They also highlighted that media, advertising and celebrity owners have helped drive the appeal of, and increase the demand for these breeds. Following the interview Gudrun said: “We shouldn’t be buying and breeding dogs on the way we want them to look - it should always be about prioritising welfare above appearance. These are breeds that can suffer just by walking around or eating, which is why we’re calling on the media and advertisers to stop using them in their adverts. It is also difficult to turn on the TV, check Instagram or see a celebrity photo without also seeing a brachycephalic breed so it’s not surprising that demand for these dogs is rising. “And we would also encourage anyone considering getting a brachycephalic breed to speak to their local vet and think about choosing a healthier breed or crossbreed instead.

From Page 5 Helen McDade, Head of Policy for the John Muir Trust said: “Scotland is united in wishing to keep our wild landscapes free from large -scale wind farms, giant pylons, super quarries and other inappropriate commercial developments. “The forthcoming Planning Bill provides a unique opportunity to provide the protection that’s currently missing, which means that cases like Creag Riabhach wind farm currently have to be challenged in the courts. That’s why we’re launching the Keep it Wild campaign, to persuade the Scottish Government that protection for Wild Land Areas must be enshrined in legislation before they are lost for good. “Wild land is a key part of Scotland’s natural heritage and national identity. It is also a major driver of the Scottish economy, attracting tourists from all over the world to visit, spend money and support jobs in some our most fragile local communities. “And with support for wild protection outweighing opposition by 16 to 1, it’s hard to think of any other public issue which commands such a universal consensus across age groups, geographical regions and social classes.” A similar YouGov poll run in 2013 found 40% of respondents strongly supported the Scottish Government’s proposals that Scotland’s Wild Land should be given special protection from inappropriate development, for example wind farms. With the current finding that 52% strongly agree Wild Land Areas should continue to be protected from large scale infrastructure, this would suggest a rise in strong support for the proposal. The Keep It Wild campaign urges people to show their support for Scotland’s Wild Land Areas to be protected as a unique natural legacy for future generations by writing to their MSP and / or Scotland’s Planning Minister, and getting involved on social media using the hashtag #keepitwild.
