Major changes to mini recycling points from next month

Mini recycling points across the area will be changing from next month, to help Aberdeenshire reduce the environmental impact of its waste collection system. Aberdeenshire’s current kerbside recycling system already accepts a wide range of materials, which can all be placed in the same blue lidded bin and collected every two weeks. Separate cardboard bins at the mini recycling points will also be removed – as cardboard of all types can also be placed in the blue lidded kerbside recycling bins. There has been a notable drop-off in the amount of materials being taken to mini recycling points by householders since the current kerbside collections were introduced in 2015.

One of the main benefits of the change is the need for substantially less vehicle use, saving money and carbon emissions.

It will also help prevent the misuse of mini-recycling points for the disposal of trade waste. Commercial businesses should not have been using these facilities, as they are required to make alternative arrangements for disposal of their waste and recycling.

Unfortunately, contamination levels are also higher at the mini recycling points than at Household Waste Recycling Centres, or compared to kerbside collections, where our team can provide a check on what’s going into bins. From Page 8 “Households can still recycle exactly the same materials and have it collected in their blue lidded bin from the kerbside,” said Aberdeenshire Council’s Head of Roads, Landscape Services and Waste Management, Philip McKay. “Although households are restricted to one landfill bin, we will supply additional blue lidded recycling bins free of charge in order to encourage as much recycling as possible. By giving residents the option of using mini recycling points as well as the kerbside service, we are running vehicles just for this, while there is capacity within our current domestic kerbside collection vehicles. It is expected there will be no reduction in the amount of recyclate recovered in Aberdeenshire, but there will be benefits for the environment and the council’s budget, in the region of £400,000.”

The changes will take effect from July 31 onwards.

Community Waste Officers will be speaking to local community councils about the changes to recycling points and will share information on how to obtain new or additional blue recycling bins.

ACE Winches supports Young Leader at prestigious council awards Leading global deck machinery specialist, ACE Winches was delighted to present the award for “Young Leader of the Year” at the annual Inspiring Aberdeenshire celebratory event.

Since 2013, the company, based in Turriff, Aberdeenshire, has supported this Aberdeenshire initiative that celebrates and recognises the best of community spirit across the region.

The award ceremony, which took place on Friday 23rd June, saw Hayley Yule, Marketing and Communications Director at ACE Winches, present the award for “Young Leader of the Year” to 17-year old school pupil, Cherry Hudson.

Alford Academy pupil, Cherry Hudson was nominated for the award due to her busy schedule and hardworking approach to her studies and extra curriculum activities.

This has included volunteering at her local primary school, where she supported the primary one class, as well as securing a dance leadership qualification so that she can teach a weekly dance class at the academy. In addition to this, Cherry has maintained her part-time job, working in a local care home helping residents who suffer from dementia with their day-to-day life, all whilst sitting her Scottish Higher exams.

Hayley explained: “ACE Winches has been delighted to support this local annual event over the last four years. It is one of Aberdeenshire Council’s biggest events of the year and celebrates the achievements of residents and local communities.

The Scottish Fishermen’s Federation has insisted that the sustainable harvesting of fish stocks will remain a key priority for the industry after the UK leaves the Common Fisheries Policy.

It comes after environment secretary Michael Gove said the UK would leave the London Convention, which allows vessels from six European countries to fish in UK inshore waters, within two years as a precursor to quitting the CFP. SFF chief executive Bertie Armstrong said: “The idea that our exit initially from the London Convention and then the CFP will instantly herald a return to the old days of overfishing is preposterous and, frankly, insulting. Those who make such remarks have clearly not been looking closely at what has been going on in the industry.

“Observers and those who claim to be stakeholders in our industry need to understand that Brexit will lead to a redistribution of quotas, and not an increase. The industry has brought itself back from the edge of the precipice through its commitment to sustainable fishing, and most major stocks are now caught at or near maximum sustainable yield (MSY) levels. Why on earth would we want to dangle our feet over the edge again?”
