ANOTHER NATS DISASTER
The likely closure of Peterhead Power Station will come as no surprise to the local community as it follows a long list of needless devastation at the hands of the non-resident Nats. It looks very likely that Peterhead Power Station will be added to the long roll of closures Peterhead has suffered over the last few decades. Crossies, Cleveland, General Motors, Mill, RAF Buchan to name but a few that have torn the industrial heart out of the town. The death knell for the Power Station came when the Nats failed to support the Carbon Capture Project at the plant. Instead of supporting Peterhead, the Nats have spent £1.4 billion on Chinese steel to build a bridge in Edinburgh, £350 million on a ‘toy town’ railway in the Borders, £2 billion on railways and roads between Glasgow and Edinburgh, not forgetting the Nats pièce de résistance of a half empty holiday camp for Central Belt criminals at Peterhead Prison costing £150,000,000 of public money. Peterhead’s only resident Councillor, Alan S. Buchan, said, if the people of Peterhead continue to vote for those who have zero commitment to our community, the out come will continue to be the same as it has been for decades. From oil and gas to fish, Peterhead should have been one of the wealthiest towns in the world, instead it has been smashed leaving the East part of the town as one of the most deprived areas in Scotland according to the Nats own figures, while Aberdeenshire Council figures shown that more than 25% of the children in area are living in poverty. Cllr Buchan concluded by asking: Do the residents of Peterhead really wish to continue to allowing huge sums of public money to be wasted while vital jobs are destroyed by those who do not even live in our town ?

The ScotRail Alliance is urging customers on the Aberdeen to Inverness route to check their journey times before they travel, as improvement works are taking place over the coming weeks. Due to track replacement and improvement works, buses replace trains on four weekends from February to April, with late evening services being revised. Customers may find that their train is replaced by a bus for some or all of the journey. To avoid disappointment, the train operator is encouraging customers to plan ahead and check their journey plans on the ScotRail app or at scotrail.co.uk. A ScotRail Alliance spokesperson said: A ScotRail Alliance spokesperson said: “These are vital works and we are doing everything we can to keep our customers moving during them. The Environmental Co-operation Action Fund (ECAF), which forms part of Scotland’s Rural Development Programme (SRDP), has been suspended to allow for redesign to meet EU audit requirements with a view to relaunching in the future. Ministers are currently considering reallocation the funds to initiatives and the Union has used a letter to the Cabinet Secretary for Rural Economy and Connectivity Fergus Ewing urging him to direct the funds towards the new entrants’ components of the SRDP 2014-2020 – namely, the Young Farmers and New Entrants Start Up Grants Schemes and the New Entrants Capital Grant Scheme. Around £7 million of the £10 million allocated to Young Farmers and New Entrants schemes has already be taken up, with 140 successful applicants. However, NFU Scotland is concerned that the budget allocation is being quickly used up and the number of unsuccessful applications is already high. Topping up funding levels from ECAF would increase the effectiveness of popular schemes that are already stretched. This request from NFUS follows supportive comments made by Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon at NFU Scotland’s AGM in Glasgow this week, where she recognised the importance of attracting new entrants into farming to the long-term health of the sector. In her address to AGM delegates, the First Minister indicated that the Scottish Government was looking at other ways to create further opportunities for new farmers and encouraging young people to take up farming.

We are in complete agreement with Scottish Government on this issue. Encouraging a new generation to the industry is vital if Scotland is to maintain vibrant farming and crofting sectors. Overcoming barriers to entry and attracting talented people to agriculture is a key priority for both the Scottish Government and NFU Scotland.” Mark Donald, Chairman of NFU Scotland’s New Generation Group welcomed the strong focus put on new entrants and young farmers by the First Minister in her address at the Union’s AGM, and the commitment to look into other ways in which government can help. £217,000 awarded to 73 projects across Scotland over four years NFU Scotland’s Centenary Trust has awarded a final cheque of £1,050 to mark its closing. The Royal Highland Education Trust (RHET) received the donation as the trustees met for the final time recently to close the books. The Trust was set up to mark the Union’s Centenary in 2013 with £217,000 distributed to charities and community organisations with an interest in agriculture since then with 73 projects benefiting from donations. Of the £217,000 awarded in total by the Trust, £145,000 was given to educational activities, with £43,000 for rural training and £29,000 to health and safety projects. The funds were raised from donations by NFU Scotland members, as well as a highly successful Banff Centenary Whisky and a Centenary Book to mark the occasion. During its time, the Trust delivered on its key objectives of encouraging as many children as possible to learn more about where their food and drink comes from and to visit a farm; to educate farmers, their employees and their children on health and safety in the countryside, with a special emphasis on children’s safety; and to assist in bringing forward a meaningful apprenticeship programme for the farm sector. The largest award was given to Royal Northern Countryside Initiative of £17,500 to build a new classroom on wheels with RHET Borders being given £5,000 to refurbish its country classroom on wheels. Ringlink’s land-based internship programme and the Queensberry Initiative – a charity community project in Dumfries and Galloway - received £15,516 and £15,000, respectively, to fund their educational projects. The Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs received a further £10,000 for health and safety projects across the country. Trustee, George Lawrie, a farmer in Fife, commented: “Over the last four years, the fund has helped many projects educate a huge range of people – from farmers and their employees to school children and teachers, as well as the general public. What has been achieved has been fantastic in a short time frame and we thank all those who have been involved in raising money, giving donations, or submitting applications since the inception of the Trust. “We are bringing the Trust to a close but it will be great to see End of Tenancy & Offices projects that have benefited from funding continue to educate and Disclosure Scotland Vetted inform in the coming years. ASCO team raise over £17,000 for Scottish SPCA
The Scottish SPCA were delighted to be presented with a cheque of £17,706.90 from their corporate supporters ASCO. Scotland’s animal welfare charity has been overwhelmed by the generous support of ASCO’s staff over the past year after they chose the Society as their 2016 charity of the year. The kind and dedicated staff have fundraised through various activities including 5k and 10k runs, a Family Fun Day, Ladies Day, with their Training Administrator, Cat Downs, also taking part in the Great Scottish Swim. Sam Begg from ASCO said, “Our staff nominate charities to support that are close to our hearts and the Scottish SPCA will always be one of them. Throughout our partnership, we have witnessed the incredible work carried out by the team from centre staff to fundraisers to inspectors - animal welfare is their absolute priority and the level of care given by staff is second to none. “We were a little saddened to hear of the lack of corporate sponsors in 2016 considering the number of us living with pets, so we made it our priority to not only push our fundraising target but to raise awareness for the charity and their Aberdeenshire centre in the process. “We wish them the very best of luck fundraising in the future and hope that this message encourages other companies to get involved.
