DEAR READER,

We are delighted to present you with the second edition of this year’s IN!SIDE Truck magazine.

Given it is two years since the beginning of the pandemic, it is hardly surprising that both customers and suppliers were keen to speak and meet face-to-face, as we have seen at Automechanika Frankfurt, IAA Hanover and the NEXUS HD Summit in Gdansk.

At such occasions, NEXUS consistently supports the entire community as confirmed by the high business increases we have seen that exceed the average development experienced by the general aftermarket. The NEXUS development strategy is indeed focusing on an innovative and sustainable aftermarket business, especially in the HD segment in which end customers and fleets understand the major stake. They are indeed looking for green label spare parts to repair their vehicles – increasingly they are deciding to buy professionally remanufactured components. NEXUS is actively promoting some commitments in this direction, such as a dedicated CSR policy, and introducing more green products and services.

We hope you will enjoy reading this new edition of INSIDE Truck, which include a range of topics and provides some the answers to current issues.

Kind regards,

Janusz Zielinski

DEAR READER,

Since its creation in 2014, NEXUS is constantly adapting to the needs and expectations of our industry in accordance with our stated aim of: “We owe you more than business as usual”.

Sustainability is more than just a priority amongst us all and, it goes without saying, that our industry - especially the heavy duty side - has to engage and act now. Over the past 4 years, NEXUS has taken multiple initiatives in the sustainability domain and, in the immediate future, NEXUS will continue to pursue its efforts in this area. Indeed, one of the three main pillars of the future roadmap includes sustainability as an emergency.

So, in this new edition of INSIDE Truck, we share some thoughts, inputs and solutions deployed by our community - prior to the NEXUS Climate Day, which will take place during our Business Forum in Montreal in 2023. We hope you will find it inspiring! Now enjoy reading IN!SIDE Truck magazine.

Kind regards,

MOTUS AND STANDARD BANK SECURE SA’S FIRST ZAR-BASED SUSTAINABILITY-LINKED

As a leading automotive group, with an unrivalled scale and scope in South Africa, the ZAR 6.8 billion funding package highlights the importance of Motus’ environmental, social and governance (ESG) journey.

Sustainability-linked loans tie the terms of funding to ESG outcomes to support and incentivise responsible corporate behaviour and the creation of shared value. As Motus achieves its key performance indicators (KPIs), it receives an incentive in the form of a favourable rate benefit and vice versa should it not achieve its KPIs.

This drives Motus’ environmental and social impact through material KPI selection and setting ambitious targets, with a focus on its own road fuel consumption, water consumption, electricity efficiency and gender equality to drive diversity and inclusion. Standard Bank is focused, primarily through its Sustainable Finance division, on providing financial products and services that support positive ESG outcomes, including green and social bonds, sustainability-linked loans and bonds, sustainable trade and working capital solutions and impact investing.

Denoxtronic exhaust-gas treatment: Bosch supports vehicle repairs with a comprehensive service program

FILTER CHANGES ACCORDING TO MANUFACTURER SPECIFICATIONS

DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT AND REPAIR TOOLS

BOSCH DENOXTRONIC FOR COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

SINCE 2004

Five generations of the exhaustgas treatment and dosing system Denoxtronic were installed in a large proportion of diesel vehicles during the last 18 years. This system injects the urea-water solution AdBlue into the exhaust stream and converts, in combination with the SCR catalytic converter, harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) into water and nitrogen. Around 12 million systems are in operation worldwide in trucks, construction and agricultural machinery. They are also used in stationary systems with diesel generators. For their long running times and high mileages, commercial vehicles need regular maintenance. The need for Denoxtronic service opens up a great potential to generate additional workshop sales.

Bosch Denoxtronic filters reliably remove dirt particles from the AdBlue, thus supporting optimal dosing and protecting the Denoxtronic system at the same time. The Denoxtronic filter has to be changed regularly according to the vehicle manufacturer‘s instructions. An informative 3D film shows the generations of the exhaust-gas cleaning system by the help of a camera flight. Filter changes and the function of the system are described in an informative and easy-to-understand manner. www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-BNDcBn178

Overview of the Denoxtronic 2.2 system in the vehicle: When the engine is running, the flow of exhaust gas and AdBlue becomes visible, and the system’s components are highlighted and labeled.

Workshops receive from Bosch a professional support around all Denoxtronic system in order to carry out maintenance and repairs as efficiently as possible and thus reduce downtimes. With the Denoxtronic sets 1 or 2 in a practical case and the diagnostic device KTS Truck, installed components are checked and defective components are identifi ed through function tests. Corresponding test and repair instructions are contained in the workshop software ESI[tronic] 2.0 Online. Bosch offers Denoxtronic modules and spare parts to replace defective components. The supply modules Denoxtronic 1.1, 2.1 and 2.2 are also available in the Bosch eXchange program for valuebased vehicle repairs. Knowledge of diesel technology is imparted in a practical manner in the Bosch service training course on Exhaust-gas treatment in commercial vehicles. Workshops can thus offer a suitable service for practically every CV.

Crystal Lake, Ill. – (Oct. 10, 2022) The VIPAR Heavy Duty IMPACTTM Conference is returning to its traditional fully in-person format Oct. 16-21, 2022, at the JW Marriott Marco Island in Marco Island, Florida. VIPAR Heavy Duty’s move to a new format for certain aspects of the show was based on stockholder feedback and to facilitate valuable interaction among conference attendees. Several elements that will take on a more interactive format include the general session, supplier meeting, and the Young Leaders Roundtable Lunch geared toward open conversation for attendees rather than a designated speaker.

New this year to the conference is the Women in Business Reception, bringing together female leaders within the network to spark dialogue and support the critical role of women in the heavy duty industry.

The traditional stockholder meeting, GenNext Young Leaders Reception and highly popular tradeshow and one-on-one meetings also will be making a comeback at the 2022 IMPACT Conference.

Networking activities will take place throughout the conference including the IMPACT Memorial Golf Tournament which memorializes industry friends lost and their contributions to the VIPAR Heavy Duty network and aftermarket industry. Sponsorships and donations generated through the tournament will help support those in need including members of the VIPAR Heavy Duty network that were impacted by recent hurricanes as well as Wyakin Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preparing wounded veterans for post-military careers.

AUTOMECHANIKA FRANKFURT: NEXUS AUTOMOTIVE INTERNATIONAL REVEALED ITS NEW SIGNATURE AND SHARED ITS VISION FOR THE FUTURE OF THE AFTERMARKET

As highlighted at the NEXUS Business Forum in Vienna, the automotive aftermarket faces major challenges including: electrification, digitalization and consolidation. In this context, the shift from “parts” to “parts and smart mobility services” stands out as a key challenge. NEXUS Automotive International revealed during Automechanika its new signature as “The Automotive Aftermarket Company”, which conveys the ambition of the entire NEXUS Community to lead the transformation ahead for the sector.

NEXUS sums up the mission of ‘The Automotive Aftermarket Company’ in the three sections highlighted below.

GROWING THE CORE BUSINESS

It’s 8 years since N! created the leading Automotive Aftermarket network, with the ambition to become a global growth accelerator. N! will continue to develop its worldwide network of distributors in future years by working even more closely and proactively with its supplier partners; as well as expanding its supplier portfolio through the active promotion of “green suppliers” and the approach of “parts” to “parts and smart mobility services”.

Another major direction in the years ahead will be the expansion and professionalization of the N! training services and garage concepts (i.e N! Academy and N! Auto).

CAPITALIZING ON INNOVATION

The Automotive Aftermarket of 2035 will be significantly different from the AA of 2022. Major stakes and opportunities including electrification, digitalization and consolidation are ahead of us. The duty of NEXUS is to anticipate trends and to stay close to innovation eco-systems and to drive forward innovation around the world. In this way, N! plans to contribute to the growth plans of our distributors and help them in diversifying their activities as we head towards 2035. Innovation has been and will continue to be at the core of NEXUS’s strategy of investment. This is the reason why N! created the VC Mobilion and has supported the foundations of multiple start-ups including Sparker, the AA market-success services platform, which will be launched in October in cooperation with multiple strategic co-investors. In addition, N! is very proud of Ki Mobility Solutions, which Mobilion has invested in. It was created by one of the stakeholders of NEXUS TVS Automotive Solution and, in a report published by HSBC and KPMG, has been identified as one of the next 10 unicorns to emerge in India.

SUSTAINABILITY, THE EMERGENCY

Sustainability is more than just a priority amongst us all, and it goes without saying that our industry has to engage and act now. Over the past 4 years, NEXUS has taken multiple initiatives in the sustainability domain and, in the immediate future, NEXUS will continue to pursue its efforts in this area. We will treat the sustainability challenge as both an emergency and as a ground for entrepreneurship. EQUIP AUTO PARIS 2022: NEXUS AUTOMOTIVE

INTERNATIONAL

ACCELERATES ITS INNOVATION STRATEGY TO INTEGRATE AND EXPAND ITS SERVICE

OFFERING

2022, October 20th – EQUIP AUTO Paris has been a major event in the automotive aftermarket since 1975. On this occasion, NEXUS Automotive International places innovation as both a necessity and an opportunity in the context of major transformation.

After presenting its new strategy during AutoMechanika Frankfurt, the company has three main priorities:

- A priority: accelerating growth

- A necessity: capitalize on innovation

- An emergency: sustainable development NEXUS Automotive International specifies and reinforces its strategy in terms of innovation around 3 pillars:

1/ Investing through the Mobilion venture capital fund, created in Tel Aviv 3 years ago. This will enter phase 2 of its development thanks to a fundraising of 100 million euros scheduled for 2023.

2/ Identifying and supporting innovation players in the AA Sparker, a global innovation ecosystem is dedicated to accelerating and servicing startups in the “Green & Smart” mobility sector of the automotive aftermarket. Led by Benoît Ducorps, it will be launched in November in Barcelona.

31 IN ! SIDE TRUCK TRUCK NEWS

IN!SIDE TRUCK ENTREPRENEURSHIP MEMBERS

Its ambition is to identify, select and support existing start-ups on all continents in order to draw-up a comprehensive vision of the start-up ecosystem in cooperation with several strategic co-investors.

3/ Diversifying the portfolio Identifying and investing are not enough: it is essential to offer innovation to the N! community by integrating it into the group’s business model.

This is the reason why NEXUS has created an innovation committee to orchestrate its diversification. It is composed of internal and external experts ruling on new products and services identified through several categories including Safety, EV, Mobility and, Sustainability. This committee will allow NEXUS to identify the most promising AA products and services; and will provide the opportunity to test, adopt and use these new offers, in order to create more value.

Sparker will manage, track and select start-ups that are presenting products & services which can be used and commercialized in the industry and de facto, allow its community to better prepare for the massive evolutions to come.

Thierry Mugnier, Chief Financial & Innovation Officer of NEXUS, said: “Since its creation, NEXUS has placed innovation at the heart of its investment strategy. The major challenges facing our industry between now and 2035 - electrification, digitalization, and consolidation - can only be overcome if we innovate and stay close to the ecosystems. Digitalization and sustainable mobility will be key to the accelerated growth we are hoping for. This is what is driving us to accelerate the diversification of our activities in order to be able to offer THE sustainable mobility services of tomorrow.”

BFT NOW INVOLVED IN LAST-MILE DELIVERY

BFT Location, a transport and logistics company based in Lyon, the 3rd largest city in France, is launching LIUM, its new subsidiary ensuring ecological deliveries using electric trucks, vans, cars and electric bikes to deliver from the port of Lyon to the center while preserving the environment.

With more than 600 vehicles and 40 drivers traveling across Europe daily, BFT is now involved in last-mile delivery.

It is with this in mind that the BeaujoLyon line was set up by LIUM. It allows the transport of goods from producers, craftsmen and companies in the Beaujolais region to the city center of Lyon, by trucks and electric cars, then boats and finally electric scooters to the dense center of Lyon. LIUM thus provides a response to the dual objective of decarbonizing transport flows and relieving congestion at Lyon’s access.

On November 10, 2022, for the last experimentation, it was the famous french wine « Beaujolais Nouveau », accompanied by other local products, which sailed to Lyon by boat from the Port of Villefranche-sur-Saône where they had previously been transported by electric trucks. Over the last kilometres, they were then picked up and delivered by electric scooters.

35 IN ! SIDE TRUCK

IN!SIDE TRUCK ENTREPRENEURSHIP MEMBERS

Faced with the excellent results obtained technically, economically and ecologically, LIUM will be able to offer a weekly Beaujolais - Lyon - Beaujolais line to the north of the city from the start of 2023. At the same time, LIUM is thinking about experimenting with a new logistics line in soft mobility south - center with the aim of extending its offer to all sectors of the territory.

To achieve this, this initiative relies on a network of committed partners and integrates 4 major objectives:

• Create sustainable jobs to unclog the city

• Optimize flows and reduce pollution by decarbonizing the chain from the first to the last kilometer.

• Create a road-river multimodal platform at the Port of Lyon

• Deploy an IT solution that makes it easy to order and track the transport of goods. But also to optimize routes in real time thanks to artificial intelligence. Give each player the data and the means to promote and communicate around this initiative.

More than a service provider, LIUM works with public and private players as a strong link in the soft mode multimodal intra-urban logistics chain.

» UNIQUE PLUG-IN HOUSING ASSORTMENTS FOR MAN AND MERCEDES

Perfectly assembled for workshops

Herth+Buss is continuously working on creating solutions to provide workshops with the best possible support in their day-to-day work. In doing so, the parts specialist is in constant exchange with workshops in order to obtain valuable feedback directly from end customers. At the suggestion of workshops, Herth+Buss has expanded its range to include practical plug-in housing assortments for MAN and Daimler truck and bus vehicles.

MAN plug-in housing assortment

The practical 241-piece assortment has the most common 6- to 21-pin receptacles and plug housings for the MAN TGA and TGX vehicles. It is therefore suitable for repairing the ZDR, ZDR-KSM and ZDR-FFR interfaces. In addition, Herth+Buss offers two separate plug housing sets for repairing the plug connection on the main headlight for the 7-pin housings. These are each supplied including the appropriate crimp connectors and seals.

Plug housing assortment Mercedes

For this 136-piece assortment, Herth+Buss has studied the most common plug-in connections on Mercedes and used these findings to develop a new and practical assortment. The handy assortment contains the 6- to 21-pin receptacle housings that are installed in the Actros MP5 at Mercedes-Benz. The focus here was on repairing the plug-in connection on the fuse relay box.

Advantages of the assortments

The assortments are the perfect helpers in everyday workshop work. All components for a professional repair are clearly arranged. This makes the everyday work of the auto mechanic easier, as he has all the items right at hand when working on the vehicle. How Smart Battery Technology is Improving Fleet Efficiency

Battery failure is the number one cause of vehicle breakdowns and conventional batteries often struggle to cope with the demands of continuous use as hotel loading and double or triple driver shift patterns increasingly become the norm. Operators are generally left in the dark when it comes to accessing detailed information about the state of the batteries in their vehicles, which can be frustrating since batteries play such a vital role in efficiency

ODYSSEY® Battery is aiming to make life easier for fleet managers by introducing a new commercial vehicle battery, which uses innovative smart technology to monitor and sync key data with an app to provide real-time updates and advance warning of any potential issues.

“This could be a real game-changer for haulage companies as well as original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), commercial fleet operators and logistics firms who are often expected to pick up the cost of call outs and battery replacements,” explains Peter ‘t Hart, Director of Transportation for EMEA & APAC at EnerSys.

“Reliability is key for transport operators and unexpected vehicle downtime can wreak havoc with delivery schedules, causing goods to arrive late. As well as the immediate disruption, there is also lost productivity and revenue to consider, alongside reputational damage and the cost of breakdown recovery.”

Motor oil or fuel

Of course, quality oils from LIQUI MOLY are more expensive than cheap brands. But in return, they also perform better. In fact, despite their price, oils and additives can significantly reduce running costs in the long term. After all, the price per liter of oil is a negligible factor in a truck’s total cost calculation. If you skimp here, you’ll be buying tiny savings with major disadvantages.

This starts with the oil change interval. LIQUI MOLY oils are suitable for extended oil change intervals. This halves the amount of oil required. Even if LIQUI MOLY’s oil were twice as expensive, there would be no cost disadvantage. Fewer oil changes also mean less downtime. The vehicles are available for longer and can generate more money. The savings effect is particularly great with the LIQUI MOLY ‘Oil Change Package’. The oil circuit is cleaned, a low-viscosity motor oil is selected, a wear protection additive is added to the oil, and the injectors are cleaned with a fuel additive. With this package, the original low consumption values can be restored and a lot of fuel saved.

LIQUI MOLY also offers fleet operators free, individual oil advice. Together, the respective fleet is analyzed and then the smallest possible range of different oils is proposed. This simplifies logistics and reduces the risk of costly mix-ups.

LIQUI MOLY’s Application Technology specialists will help with any questions. Not an anonymous call center with few technically skilled employees, but a direct connection to the LIQUI MOLY Research and Development Department, where practical experts are available to answer questions.

LIQUI MOLY’s portfolio also includes not only products for trucks, but also for light commercial vehicles, construction equipment and agricultural machines. If a company has a multi-sector fleet, it can still obtain everything from a single source for certain compatibility in terms of motor oils, gear oils, additives, greases, pastes, service products and care products.

The result is a complete package that enables fleet operators to benefit from top quality and save money at the same time.

Thanks to LIQUI MOLY, fleet operators can reduce their running costs. Instead of saving at the wrong end, fuel consumption and downtime can be reduced.
– which is the bigger cost factor?

Work. Perfectly done.

Large, heavy, powerful: trucks are designed for a long service life and high mileage. The demands on them are high. Freight forwarders, fleet operators, and drivers are under constant time and cost pressure. Breakdowns must therefore be kept to a minimum.

To keep trucks running consistently over long distances, MAHLE has a wide range of products for your customers relating to engine parts, gaskets, filters, starter motors & alternators, engine cooling & air conditioning, workshop equipment & diagnostics, and e-mobility & electronics.

ELIMINATING OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

MAHLE is going climate-neutral. The company supports the objectives of the Paris Agreement and has committed itself to a Group-wide CO2 strategy. By increasing energy efficiency, producing its own electricity from renewable sources, purchasing carbon-neutral power, and using carbon offsets, MAHLE will make its production activities climate-neutral by 2040.

MAHLE plans to increase its energy efficiency by 2 percent each year in order to achieve this target. As one of the world’s largest automotive suppliers, the company is aware of its responsibility. Although not an energy-intensive business by definition, a lot of energy is needed for smelting, machining, and brazing processes. Generating this energy from sustainable sources in the future is important for more reasons than just climate protection: from a business perspective, too, it makes sense to save energy and generate it ourselves.

PARMA LIGHTHOUSE PROJECT

All MAHLE locations in Germany have been carbon-neutral since 2021. And MAHLE has even gone a step further in Parma, Italy - the Service Solutions center headquarters, which opened in 2020, is practically emission-free thanks to state-of-the-art technology. It’s MAHLE’s first energy-efficient and carbon-neutral plant, with an energy efficiency rating of A+++. Amongst other things, the location develops, produces, and markets equipment for driver assistance system diagnostics and calibration, as well as for air conditioning and transmissions maintenance.

51 IN ! SIDE TRUCK

IN!SIDE TRUCK ENTREPRENEURSHIP MEMBERS

The electricity required is generated by the building itself. The photovoltaic array installed on the roof meets up to 70 percent of the location’s energy needs on sunny days. The PV system will be extended in 2022 to make the Service Solutions Center self-sufficient, even at peak production times and when additional heating or cooling is needed. Further measures for optimizing energy consumption include state-of-the-art materials and construction methods, LED lights with motion sensors, and sophisticated components for air conditioning and heating. All of this is not only good for the climate, but is also reflected in the bottom line: by the eighth year of operation, the extended photovoltaic system will have already paid for itself.

MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY

To ensure its readiness in all other areas connected with climate neutrality as well, MAHLE has set up a dedicated Central Sustainability function, which will oversee all of the related projects. In addition to energy production, this will also include globally sustainable purchasing. The company is therefore using its own targets as a benchmark for its suppliers. The possibility of using recycled materials in MAHLE’s own products is another aspect being investigated and implemented.

When it comes to developing products, MAHLE is placing greater emphasis on modern mobility, focusing on reducing fuel consumption and emissions from combustion engines and producing components for alternative drive types. The innovative MAHLE battery management system with integrated thermal management increases the fast-charging capability of batteries in electric vehicles, for example. Faster charging means that smaller and lighter batteries can be installed. This improves the carbon footprint of the electric vehicle whilst lowering the demand for raw materials needed for battery production, which are becoming increasingly scarce worldwide.

PIONEERING ROLE

MAHLE’s efforts have triggered a huge positive response from customers. Volvo presented its Green Energy Award to its supplier Chengdu MAHLE Automotive Thermal Systems for its use of electricity from renewables. And, the plant in St. Michael ob Bleiburg, was recognized last year by the Austrian Ministry for the Environment for its portfolio of measures aimed at climate and environmental protection. MAHLE’s plants in Austria have been powered exclusively by electricity from renewable energy sources for many years now.

MARKET TRENDS 64

Associate

- Aftermarket and Retail, Automotive, Frost & Sullivan

Electrification, Telematics, Predictive Maintenance, and e-Retail will be at the forefront of the global recovery for the medium and heavy-duty Commercial Vehicle Aftermarket, as the upturn builds momentum during 2022.

Electrification will drive changes in vehicle design and architecture, with implications for OEM and supplier ecosystem writes Anuj Monga, Associate Director - Aftermarket and Retail (Automotive), Frost & Sullivan, India.

Pandemic notwithstanding, the global medium-duty (MD) and heavy-duty (HD) commercial vehicle (CV) aftermarket showed resilience across a range of key parameters in 2021. Frost & Sullivan research across twenty major markets showed that manufacturer-level (supplier) revenues rose by an estimated 18.7% from 2020 levels - with average spend per vehicle increasing to $2,206 per vehicle in 2021, marking a 17.4% uptick from the previous year. Total vehicles in operation (VIO) held steady at around 48.2 million trucks. Despite surging retail diesel prices, average miles driven per truck also rose by about 10% following the resumption of business activity and supply chain recovery. Amidst this strong performance, market participants will have to gear up to face three key challenges. Firstly, the intensifying crisis related to the dearth of skilled truck drivers and aftermarket service technicians. Secondly, shortages of parts and rising raw material prices, including diesel fuel, with impacts likely to be felt in terms of deferred maintenance and repair, as well as total miles traveled. And, thirdly, the disruptive impact of new business models like eRetailing for parts and mobile on demand (MoD) for services paralleled by accelerated technological innovation in the form of telematics, predictive maintenance, and electrification.

Electrification is emerging as a defining force in the market. The MD & HD electric truck drivetrain market in North America and Europe is expected to grow at a CAGR of 91.3% between 2020 and 2030, impelled primarily by regulatory pressures as governments and the mobility industry push towards decarbonization and net zero emission targets. Growth will be reinforced by exciting new product launches and improving total cost of ownership. Accordingly, annual sales of MD & HD in Europe and North America are set

to surge from around 0.66 thousand units in 2020 to 430,000 units by 2030. To learn more, please access our research reports, Global Medium-and Heavy-duty Commercial Vehicle Aftermarket Outlook, 2022, North American and European Commercial Vehicle Electric Drivetrain Growth Opportunities, or contact sathyanarayanak@ frost.com for information on a private briefing.

TECHNOLOGY TRENDS IN 2022

Similar to other industries, digitalization will have a transformative impact on parts procurement, truck maintenance, and repair by fleets. Telematics suppliers will emerge as the big winners, with revenues likely to be double that of the rest of the aftermarket industry in 2022. This will be driven by the recognition of the multiple benefits

66 IN ! SIDE TRUCK

offered by aftermarket telematics platforms compared to OEM solutions. Among the advantages of telematics platforms are that they support greater flexibility, enable reduced implementation costs, promote enhanced data ownership and transparency, and are brand-agnostic, which is a crucial consideration for fleets using different truck brands. Meanwhile, trailer telematics will attract steady investments from fleets looking to smart trailer solutions to improve asset utilization, cargo tracking, and driver productivity.

Like telematics suppliers, online sellers are in for a bumper ride in 2022. The integration of eCommerce platforms with fleet management systems will increase the volume of online parts sales. Online sales growth, which surpassed 20% in 2021, will reprise this feat in 2022 on the back of wider product choice, competitive pricing, and faster delivery times. Such gains will be to the detriment of traditional distributors, who have been struggling with product availability linked to parts shortages. Another technological trend that has been gaining increasing traction among fleets is predictive maintenance. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and sensing capabilities will slash truck downtime, whilst optimizing costs and operational efficiencies for fleets.

The move from diesel to electric powertrains in the CV industry will result in fundamental changes to vehicle architecture and design. OEMs will look to ensure a seamless transition in their portfolios to develop new concept vehicles. Axle electrification will gain increasing appeal over the long-term. New entrants will find it easier to move directly to eAxle designs, whilst central drive architecture will be the preferred technology choice for more established OEMs in the initial transition phase.

Meanwhile, advances in motor technology will be marked by a move from conventional permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) towards magnetless synchronous motors and reluctance-assisted motors in the short-term; and potentially to switched reluctance motors (SRMs) in the long-term. Developments in motor technology will push eAxle architectures into prominence, while highlighting the limitations of central drive architectures. Advances in light weighting and component integration will mark the evolution of eAxle architecture. By 2030, eCarrier architecture is projected to account for a 42.4% share of the MD&HD electric truck drivetrain market in North America and Europe, followed by central drive with a 32.2% share, whilst eCrown and wheel hub make up the remainder.

REGIONAL AND PRODUCT OUTLOOK FOR 2022

Invariably, regional growth prospects will be influenced by varied, region-specific trends. For instance, rising gas prices, truck driver shortages, and potential supply chain disruptions will affect the aftermarket in North America, whilst participants in Asia-Pa-

cific will have to contend with COVID lockdowns, erratic factory output, and the gradual recovery of construction and infrastructure projects.

In 2021, the Asia-Pacific region accounted for almost 54.6% of global medium and heavy-duty CV aftermarket revenues. Buoyed by a growth rate of 10.6%, the region is projected to have the largest market size, expanding from approximately $68.10 billion in 2021 to $75.34 billion in 2022. It will be followed by North America and Europe, with estimated market shares of 23.6% and 14.4% in 2021; and growth rates of 12.2% and 9.3% over 2021-2022, respectively. Whilst smaller in size, markets in Latin America and in South Africa & Saudi Arabia are expected to register growth rates of 10.1% and 9.6%, respectively, over 2021-2022.

Total manufacturer-level revenues across 20 important markets are set to climb by 10.8% during 2021-2022. Average miles driven per truck is poised to increase by about 10% in major regions, resulting in higher maintenance and repair spend. North American truck fleets will consistently drive more miles than their counterparts in other regions such as Latin America, China, India, Europe and Australia.

The average spend per vehicle is anticipated to rise by 9.3% from 2021 levels to reach around $2,831 per vehicle in 2022 because of the growth of miles driven and the impact of inflation on parts pricing. North America is expected to experience the highest growth in spend per vehicle in 2022, with Europe at the lowest end of this spectrum.

In 2022, total VIO is expected to touch around 48.8 million trucks, marking a 1.3% increase over 2021. Tires and lubricant segments, which accounted for just over a quarter of total revenues in 20 key markets in 2021, will continue to retain this share in 2022. All spare parts categories are forecast to record growth in 2022, led by exhaust components at 14.7% and brakes at 14.4%. The continuing popularity of air disc brakes in the heavy-duty segment will spur steady growth for heavy-duty pads and rotors over the short-to medium- term, particularly in Europe, North America and China, even as revenues for shoes and drums decline.

68 IN ! SIDE TRUCK

Suppliers in the aftermarket replacement parts and accessories will demonstrate stable revenue growth until 2025. Replacement parts and accessories suppliers in China are on track to register the fastest CAGR of 9.2% between 2021-2025, followed by their counterparts in North America and India.

In terms of revenues generated by the two main distribution channels in 2021, the independent aftermarket (IAM) struggled to match up to original equipment suppliers (OES) in Latin America and some Asia-Pacific markets but held their own in other regions, including North America, Europe, South Africa & Saudi Arabia.

Looking Ahead

Aftermarket participants will have a mixed bag to look forward to in 2022 and beyond. Ongoing parts shortages will prevent timely repairs in several cases, causing revenue

69 IN ! SIDE TRUCK TRUCK NEWS

IN!SIDE TRUCK ENTREPRENEURSHIP MEMBERS

growth to stutter. Over the short-term, the uptake of heavy-duty electric trucks in most markets will be constrained by an inadequate charging infrastructure. Meanwhile, continued geopolitical turmoil will create an unpredictable environment for aftermarket stakeholders.

Cybersecurity will be in the spotlight as fleets look to secure truck generated data, boost employee security training, and create new protocols and processes to ensure data protection. Data-driven aftermarket telematics solutions will continue to be amongst the fastest growing product segments across all regions. eRetailing will experience double-digit growth as online parts/accessories sales soar and fleets turn away from traditional distributors towards online platforms to source parts. Concurrently, the greater integration of eRetailing platforms, with fleet management systems, will be accompanied by more rapid delivery fulfilment.

Parts shortages will highlight prospects for remanufactured equivalents. Electronic components will emerge as the fastest-growing segment in the remanufacturing space. Predictive maintenance will continue to make gains as fleets look to data-driven solutions to boost overall productivity and performance.

Currently, OEMs are still in the development phase of CV portfolio electrification. Until CV electrification becomes more widespread, OEMs will outsource the production of electric drivetrain components. Once penetration and volumes of electric CV volumes pick up around 2025, OEMs will look to bolster their technical and integration capabilities, manufacture components in-house, and drive monetization opportunities through vertical integration. In essence then, the supplier ecosystem will undergo seismic shifts because of electrification.

IN THE PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE

As the automotive industry continues to evolve and advance, brake friction products are constantly being pushed to the limit, both in terms of braking performance and driving comfort. In line with this, the expectations placed on manufacturers to reduce their environmental impact is also increasing. TMD Friction is constantly working towards a greener future through its raw material and product portfolio and vehicle management processes to comply with legislation and to meet carbon neutral expectations globally. The company is assisting the European Commission in drafting the Euro 7 standard in the area of brake emissions, working closely with vehicle manufactures and other suppliers. The complex process of removing raw materials that already serve a purpose, and replace them with equally effective and premium quality materials, is paramount as friction experts. This is why the experts at TMD Friction go above and beyond to lead the way on these important topics.

REDUCING COPPER IN CV BRAKING

One area in particular that brake manufacturers have had to evolve their products and processes in order to reduce their environmental impact, is in the use of copper in brake pads.

Copper has been a vital component in brake friction formulations for many decades. However, its impact on the environment has come under scrutiny over recent years due to copper deposits being left on the road from brake pads wearing down, which can be harmful to some wildlife.

75 IN ! SIDE TRUCK

IN!SIDE TRUCK ENTREPRENEURSHIP MEMBERS

Environmental sustainability is an important topic in the automotive industry and, as a result, there is an increasing number of government regulations regarding the use of special raw materials. Under US legislation, from 2025 copper will no longer be permitted as a component of brake pads and linings in the US.

Whilst this is not a European legislation, it has resulted in a need for the braking industry to find new formulations that are still effective from a performance perspective, yet more environmentally friendly.

As a global leader, TMD Friction is not only committed to developing some of the most advanced brake friction material technology, but also leading the industry through the development of cleaner and more sustainable solutions, including the reduction of copper from brake pads.

COPPER FREE FRICTION FORMULATIONS

For many years, the portfolio of friction formulations developed by TMD Friction has been widely regarded as one of the best in the automotive industry. At any one time, the company’s laboratories are evaluating more than 200 different “ingredients” to see if they possess properties that will result in the creation of new and advanced friction formulations. So, it is no surprise that TMD Friction started developing copper free friction materials very early on and, in 2013, was the first brake friction manufacturer to obtain approval for a copper-free friction material in the original equipment of a German high-performance vehicle – the M3 and M4 BMW models.

THE ECO-LEVEL APPROACH OF TMD FRICTION

It is this commitment to research and development, not only in reducing copper from brake pads, but also in product innovation and manufacturing processes, that has led to TMD Friction’s renowned reputation as a leader within the industry. In this regard, since the mid-1990s, TMD Friction has been using an eco-level approach.

76 NEXUS IN ! SIDE

The company had significant involvement in the development of this approach, which is now recognised as an industry standard. The classifications range from ECO I to ECO IV. This eco-classification for friction products is the basis for gradually eliminating harmful substances from the manufacturing processes. Globally, Textar and Don CV Brake pads are at level ECO IV C, which equates to reduced copper between 0.5% and 5%. Our Commercial Vehicles’ brake linings across all brands globally already meet ECO IV level requirements of less than 0.5% copper content.

In addition to more environmentally friendly friction formulations, TMD Friction is also focusing on weight-optimised brake pads with its TMD Friction Lightweight Technology Programme. Textar commercial vehicle disc brake pads - in this range - use a lightweight backing plate, thus reducing costs by decreasing the weight, enhancing fuel efficiency and therefore reducing CO2 emissions. TMD Friction is a pioneer in this area and was the first manufacturer to offer these innovative products in the aftermarket.

DON’T WASTE – RECYCLE!

For TMD Friction, environmental sustainability involves optimising production processes so that less scrap is produced and production waste is recycled. In 2022, TMD Friction reduced production waste by 50% and recycled more than 4,000 tonnes of material. Furthermore, TMD Friction is also committed to reusing energy and heat generated during the production process. In addition, TMD Friction is dedicated to reducing materials producing brake pads and linings by using materials that are not hazardous to human health or the environment. The focus is on the purity of materials so that they can be recycled by type. Great importance is also attached to eliminating health risks in everyday production processes and ensuring the safety of employees through appropriate measures. This means, for example, that filter systems reduce dust levels in production.

LEADING THE WAY

The everchanging landscape of the automotive industry requires manufacturers to evolve with the technology, but now in a socially responsible way that protects the environment. TMD Friction strives to be at the forefront of developing some of the most advanced braking materials in the world. As a pioneer within the industry, environmental impact plays a pivotal role within the company’s product development and manufacturing processes. Leading the way today for a better tomorrow.

As an important component of modern clutch systems, the release system, the connection between pedal and clutch, has a decisive influence on the driving experience. To ensure that the clutch is easy to operate and that the power flow can be safely metered, all components of the release system must work perfectly together. Today’s vehicles are usually equipped with either, a hydraulic clutch actuation or a pneumatic clutch actuator. This technology includes slave cylinders, master cylinders, release bearings and hydraulic pressure pipes. In fully hydraulic systems, a concentric slave cylinder (CSC) is used, which combines slave cylinder and release bearing in one component. Pneumatic systems on the other hand use pressurized air to operate the clutch actuator. The LuK Portfolio

Longevity meets premium quality

Concentric Pneumatic Clutch Actuators (CPCA) are the newest interface between clutch and gearbox to engage and disengage the drivetrain in modern trucks & buses. Compared to a mechanical or a hydraulic solution, the pneumatic clutch actuator utilizes air for clutch engage ment, which trucks & buses already use for their braking systems. It does not rely on a clutch booster and therefore saves space, weight and lasts longer due to reduced stress on the component. All LuK clutch actuators are engineered to offer maximum reliability and longevity.

WIPER SPECIALIST VALEO BRINGS THE AFTERMARKET ITS LATEST O.E. INNOVATION: AQUABLADE TM

AQUABLADETM TECHNOLOGY ON THE IAM MARKET

AquabladeTM is an innovative solution based on the precise spraying of the fluid on the surface of the vehicle’s windshield, achieved by integrating the screen wash nozzles into the wiper blade. Wiping the glass is faster and more even than with conventional wipers and isn’t dependent on driving speed. The efficiency of AquabladeTM has been confirmed in numerous tests carried out by the German Fraunhofer Institute, which proved that AquabladeTM enables a driver response to be 0.315 s faster than with the traditional solution. In practice, this means shortening the stopping distance at a speed of 50 km/h by 4 meters, which corresponds to the width of a pedestrian crossing.

AquabladeTM technology debuted as original equipment for premium passenger cars. Over time, it has been used in other types of vehicles, and has recently been available through the aftermarket under the Valeo and SWF brands. According to Valeo’s calculations, AquabladeTM wipers are already present in over a million vehicles on European roads.

Following its success in the passenger car and bus market, Valeo has also been successful in the heavy-loaded truck market. For over a year, wipers in AquabladeTM technology have been installed as original equipment for DAF XF, CF * trucks. These wipers, under the SWF Das Original Truck brand, are available on the aftermarket from Janu-

weather conditions. This is extremely important in the case of vehicles used to transport people. AquabladeTM wipers ensure instant cleaning of the glass and thus improve visibility for the driver. They are also a reliable support for vehicle safety systems. In many of the latest generation vehicles, the cameras and sensors for driver assistance systems are located at the top of the windshield. Conventional windshield washer fluid usually doesn’t reach this area, especially at higher speeds. Thanks to the use , the problem of a limited field of view of cameras and sensors has been eliminated.

1,402 EXHIBITORS FROM 42 COUNTRIES: THE FIRST EDITION OF IAA TRANSPORTATION IN FEW FIGURES

The first IAA TRANSPORTATION ended very successfully on 22.09. 1,402 exhibitors from 42 countries and a total of 230 national and international speakers were represented at the IAA TRANSPORTATION and presented their technical innovations, developments and concepts for the climate-neutral mobility of tomorrow.

The IAA TRANSPORTATION once again consolidated its position as the world’s largest platform for the transport and logistics industry in 2022 – around two-thirds of the exhibitors were international companies. Visitors came from 72 countries.

The many world firsts presented focused on the electrification and climate neutrality of the powertrain. The vehicle manufacturers presented the wide variety of electric and fuel cell-based drives as well as hydrogen combustion engines. New and also trendy: replacement kits with which the diesel drive in buses and trucks can be replaced by a new battery drive. With this concept, freight forwarders and local transport companies can also modernize the existing vehicle fleet during operation.

The exhibitors of trailers and bodies also had to present a wide range of innovations, including electrified trailer axles and particularly lightweight semi-trailers, which reduce the energy requirements of the tractor. Bus manufacturers focused on the electrification of intercity buses and coaches.

The next IAA TRANSPORTATION will take place from 17 to 22 September 2024 in Hanover.

Premium for synthetics

Carbon-neutral combustion engine: MANN-FILTER now also offers filters for off-highway vehicles that are compatible with synthetic fuels.

Climate change is one of the biggest dangers facing humanity and requires urgent action. Due to their high payloads and long working hours, agricultural and construction machinery require energy sources with highenergy density and short refueling times. Synthetic fuels can be used to achieve relevant CO2 savings. They are easy to transport and refueling is possible within a short period of time via an existing infrastructure. Synthetic fuels can be produced sustainably from biomass – for example straw – or organic waste such as used vegetable oil. Electrofuels or e-fuels are synthetic fuels produced using renewable electricity from water and carbon dioxide, for example. Synthetic fuels allow greenhouse gas-neutral operation of conventional gasoline and diesel engines.

The premium MANN-FILTER brand of the global filtration specialist MANN+HUMMEL already offers various fuel filters for off-highway vehicles that are compatible with synthetic fuels. Dr. Björn Schmid, Director of Material Development at MANN+HUMMEL, explains: “Synthetic fuels can be aggressive to some types of

MANN-FILTER used with synthetic fuels elastomer seals and can leach plasticizers from the fuel filter sealing ring. As a result, a seal can lose up to ten percent of its volume. In the worst case, this can even cause fuel to flow out and the filter to come loose while driving.”

The seal materials in MANN-FILTER fuel filters for synthetic fuels according to DIN EN 15940 have been tested, are ideally suited for the application, and have the relevant OE approvals. They ensure a permanent hold and a complete seal of the filter.

MANN-FILTER Backhoe Guide

MANN+HUMMEL has already started series production of these highly efficient fuel filters for various offhighway manufacturers. In the independent aftermarket for agricultural and construction machinery, for example, the MANN-FILTER PU 10 020 x is available for Claas and New Holland Construction in original equipment quality. This is just one of the MANN-FILTER fuel filters for synthetic fuels, and the range is being consistently expanded.

SUSTAINABILITY - WHAT IS IT?

Sustainability is a powerful force impacting all industries and all businesses these days and for the foreseeable future. Every newspaper or media, every large company, every consulting or accounting firm… all make reference to Sustainability, whether in terms of strategy, actions, scoring, value, offer, communication etc.

But what is it precisely and why is it important? Sustainability, previously called ESG, covers the three themes: Environment, Social, and Governance. It was also called Corporate Social Responsibility, to indicate that the role of companies goes beyond financial performance, to also include employee wellbeing and care for the Society and for the Planet.

In business, it means that companies are increasingly required to consider and include non-financial objectives in their strategy and operations. Maybe the most visible and urgent objective is to take care of the Environment by reducing the negative impact of company operations. Companies and corporations do know they have a responsibility to lead, care and progress on environmental matters, often anticipating on regulation matters.

SUSTAINABILITY - IT IS IMPORTANT FOR OUR INDUSTRY

The Transport sector as a whole represents almost 30% of all GreenHouseGas emissions emitted in the World. The independent automotive aftermarket, part of the wider Automotive industry, plays a significant role and contribution to the world’s efforts

to contain global warming. Every player in the IAM sector will be impacted; and can decide to show leadership. The following developments deserve focus and actions:

• deployment of Electric vehicles which will transform servicing operations

• extending the life of vehicles on the road, and promoting repair and remanufactured parts

• banks, investors and shareholders will require ESG assurance from companies

• Manufacturers seek to meet their customer expectations with responsible behaviours and commitments along the value chain

• attracting talents who increasingly want to work for responsible companies / employers

• regulators will impose targets and rules on companies to report and reduce their emissions

IT IS A JOURNEY!

It is early days for many players in our sector, but it is important to recognise that we do not start from scratch:

• waste management, especially hazardous waste from batteries and used lubricants, are commonly taken care of in workshops

• Remanufacturing and reuse of spare parts are common practices and increasingly being promoted

• Use of Energy is a continuous focus - to optimise fuel consumption and energy used in the warehouse

• in relation to employee well-being, our industry has always promoted safe working conditions, providing technical training as well as benefits

As we are deploying Inteliam Sustainability and Business rating in the sector, we confirm such great initiatives and commitment to progress. As clearly it is a journey!

IN GOOD HANDS: WOLF MAKES GAINS IN HEAVY DUTY SEGMENT WITH NEW ROLE

Wolf Oil Corporation is targeting growth for its extensive range of innovative HD sector engine oils and fluids following the appointment of Elvic Mottelay to Global HD Sales Manager. Elvic brings nearly 26 years of experience, harnessing his expertise to expand the HD offering of one of Europe’s largest independent lubricant manufacturers.

Let’s find out more about Wolf’s exciting plans for the HD market from Elvic:

You’ve worked at some of the world’s largest lubricant producers, why the move to Wolf?

They were very large companies and after more than two decades it was time for a change. It sounded like a fantastic opportunity to apply everything I had learned to build something new. I also thought it was an interesting challenge, to work in an incredibly agile and dynamic organization, making the most of opportunities for growth in a key sector.

Most importantly, I could see that Wolf moved quickly and understood the importance of R&D investing – that gave me confidence that the business would evolve to anticipate HD market trends and respond to these changes quickly.

You will be in charge of global Heavy Duty sales, where does Wolf stand at the moment?

Currently, around 20% of our total business is in HD. My intention is to further increase focus and investment in developing HD solutions for both on- and off-road. We have recently finalized our three-year HD roadmap that is centered around people, product innovations , and new marketing tools to accelerate growth.

So, this 3-year roadmap, what exactly does it involve?

We intend to double this fraction of our business by 2025. I am confident that we can achieve it because we have been investing in the right people, the right network, right products and making the most of training and marketing opportunities.

Of course! We are further strengthening our HD team that combines business and technical expertise. For both on- and off-road HD, we have a fantastic network of distributors and close ties with leading OEMs – this all means that we can address market challenges quickly.

When it comes to products, we are taking a close look at our portfolio and working to update products to the latest OEM standards, futureproofing them for our end users. We are providing solutions for the latest market demands like improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, extended oil drain intervals with the technical cost of ownership reduction (TCO), and new environmental legislation.

A d d itionally, we are looking i nt o EV fluids for HD applications and bio-based lubricants for HD o n-road and off-road application s. There is also a chance that we will diversify our HD offering, using our extensive expertise to develop hydraulic products, for example.

For training and marketing, we have a strong program in place. We believe that our tools and marketing support can further support our HD partners and make them experts in the field We are also working on new services that will be presented at a later stage for our partners!

Solutions for future-oriented commercial vehicle businesses.

The digitization of commercial vehicle (CV) fleets and the establishment of new drive and mobility concepts are accelerating at an unprecedented rate. Workshop processes and customer expectations are changing just as quickly.

ZF Aftermarket recently presented a variety of new products and services that allow CV workshops to take advantage of the opportunities associated with these trends. As the world’s largest CV supplier, ZF offers pioneering solutions following the integration of WABCO. This means that ZF Aftermarket also has the most comprehensive product portfolio with over 70,000 part numbers for fleets, wholesalers and workshops. Around 400 new CV parts were introduced to the aftermarket this year. Including repair kits which are particularly appreciated by workshops because they increase the quality of work and success with customers. “The enclosed repair instructions enable efficient and problem-free repairs and once again stand for our claim of not only supplying our partners with products, but with solutions. This also includes our diagnostic systems, for which we currently have 48,000 licenses,” says Aleksander Rabinovitch, Head of the CV Business Line at ZF Aftermarket.

Awarded retrofit solution concept

ZF Aftermarket also recently presented a new safety concept study, the Turning Assistant System (TAS) which was awarded with the Automechanika Innovation Award in the commercial vehicles category. This is a retrofit driver assistance system for monitoring the blind spot

in commercial vehicles, because traffic accidents can best be avoided by seeing better and by being seen.

In addition, ZF Aftermarket is launching its new workshop concept ZF [pro]Service, which was developed as a detailed concept especially for CV workshops. It will be launched in 2023, combining and optimizing the previously separate concepts ZF Service Point, ZF [pro]Tech (CV variant) and WABCO Service Partner. The three concepts are already serving around 3,800 CV workshops worldwide.

Connectivity is already an important part of mobility. Vehicle owners and especially fleet operators already rely on it to reduce energy consumption, maximize uptime and coordinate processes. ZF’s new digital fleet management platform SCALAR, which enables the operation of vehicle fleets through AI-based, automated decision-making and real-time optimization, ensuring operational efficiency at the highest level, will celebrate its premiere at IAA Transportation.

Philippe Colpron, Head of ZF Aftermarket, enthuses: “Building on more than 35 years of experience with advanced fleet management solutions, ZF has now taken connectivity to a new level enabling intelligent connectivity and added value for all partners within the ecosystem.”
