BEYOND EV KIT THE BRAKING SOLUTION FOR EV

Regenerative braking systems in EVs have changed the braking dynamics, with more braking actions performed by the electric motor. This lowers the wear on hydraulic brake components, but also exposes them to corrosion, affecting their durability and effectiveness. To address these issues, Brembo has launched the Beyond EV Kit

The kit features a special copper-free friction material with a galvanized backing plate that reduces dust and noise during braking, improving lifespan and sustainability coupled with a special surface treated disc to avoid oxidation problems up to 100,000 km and beyond.

To achieve these excellent results, it is recommended to use both the disc and the pads simultaneously.

EV Kit demonstrates Brembo’s commitment to use advanced materials and technologies to achieve superior performance and longevity.

INNOVATION FOR THE NEW MOBILITY

As the automotive landscape undergoes a paradigm shift, it is imperative to anticipate and adapt to the unique challenges posed by electric vehicles.

BRAKE DISC: Due to the regenerative braking system, the intervals between pad and disc replacements in EVs are typically extended. However, as a professional, you should remain vigilant for signs of oxidation, particularly in vehicles operating in harsh climatic conditions where brakes are utilized less frequently, as this is one of the major source of pain for drivers. With the Brembo Beyond EV Kit you address this specific issue for EV drivers.

BRAKE PAD: Given the reduced clatter of electric vehicles, acting on the brake noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) is paramount. Special attention should be paid as well to brake pads to prevent excessive corrosion on the disc surface, ensuring consistent and reliable braking performance even after prolonged periods of inactivity. With the Beyond EV Kit, Brembo as engineered a specific friction material, that improves the lifespan of the entire kit.

BRAKE FLUID: While traditional replacement intervals are generally recommended for EVs, low viscosity fluids are preferred to ensure optimal performance, that’s why Brembo suggest to pair the Beyond EV Kit with its DOT 4 LV, to obtain the maximum benefits.

Rubia EV fluids are developed with major R&D e orts and tailored technical solutions to address the new electrical, thermal and friction constraints of hybrid and electric vehicles.

As a trusted partner to heavy duty manufacturers, TotalEnergies Lubrifiants aims to become the responsible energy company to deliver technical, people-oriented solutions and sustainable performance. Our goal is to promote cleaner mobility that is better for both people and the environment.

Be ready for the future, with ESI[tronic] Evolution and Secure Diagnostic Access (SDA).

Bosch ESI[tronic] 2.0 has upgraded to ESI[tronic] Evolution. With a new, intuitive format and more information than ever before, what can you expect when you open your ESI[tronic] screen today?

What is Secure Diagnostic Access?

Secure Diagnostic Access (SDA) enables workshops to access the necessary protected vehicle data they need for comprehensive diagnostic sessions*. Diagnostic sessions are the core of a workshop’s business, and it’s essential for a workshop to be able to perform a session as efficiently as possible.

Before SDA, a workshop needing to access individual solutions had to do so through the vehicle’s manufacturer. As a consequence, workshops were faced with different logins, passwords, payment setups and interfaces for different manufacturers – which proved complex and time-consuming. SDA enables them to access the data they need in a simple and standardized way, under one personalized login.

How has SDA updated in line with ESI[tronic] Evolution?

SDA is continuously updating! Since its inception in 2021, it continues to be a growing solution. There are now over 20 vehicle manufacturers on the system – with more in the pipeline.

How does electric vehicle (EV) coverage help workshops be ready for the future?

The amount of electric vehicles on the roads are increasing, and with them comes a new type of technology. ESI[tronic] Evolution will enable workshops to work on both electric vehicles and vehicles with combustion engine, independently of the type of vehicle.

How does EV coverage help technicians* work safely with electric vehicles?

ESI[tronic] Evolution provides workshops with high-voltage battery cut-off instructions. Since this is the starting point for all hybrid or electric vehicle repairs, it is important that technicians are able to disconnect high-voltage batteries safely when they’re working on electric vehicles, so that there is no risk to health and safety.

Vehicle-specific information is required for cutting off the high-voltage battery. As this differs for each type of vehicle, the in-depth guidance provided by the cut off instructions in ESI[tronic] Evolution will help technicians safely disconnect the battery for a wide range of vehicle makes and models.

Another important part of ESI[tronic] Evolution is the function that enables workshops to diagnose the state of health (SOH) of a vehicle’s battery. This is offered in case the vehicle manufacturer provides the data in the vehicle system. An electric vehicle will experience wear and tear to its battery. Workshops may have customers looking to buy or sell an electric vehicle, or preparing for long trips, so a regular battery check is essential – the SOH-functionality enables them to do this easily.

*In order to work and repair EV cars, technicians need to train and qualify in Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Systems.

*This is valid for vehicle manufacturers which are part of SDA.

Elena’s insider tip

Tesla is a unique brand, with its own particular challenges, and we’re looking to bring a comprehensive Tesla solution to the market in the very near future.

A list of tips and tricks is already available, which workshops can use when working on Tesla models. This will explain the clever brand additions technicians may not be aware of, and make the overall diagnostic process smoother for them. You can find this in ESI[tronic] Evolution under the ECU diagnostic section, titled ‘Important Information About The Brand’.

HOW ABOUT SOMETHING EXTRA?

Continental is adding wheel bearing, suspension and steering products to its range

Wheel bearings will be available from September 2024, with suspension and steering components following in stages.

Continental celebrated a product launch with customers at the automechanika trade fair recently with the unveiling of our new wheel bearing, suspension and steering parts. And they were a big hit too. The reveal marks Continental´s progression into all-new product segments, meaning that professional mechanics can also count on Continental quality for handling demanding repair jobs in areas beyond the belt drive safely and reliably. Continental´s aim, after all, is to always offer exactly the right solutions that provide genuine added value for workshop mechanics.

With this in mind, Continental keeps its finger on the industry’s pulse and is in constant dialog with its customers. These latest additions to Continental´s product range are also the result of in-depth market analyses and customer surveys, which generated a clear response: workshop professionals would like to see Continental’s high standards of quality extended to wheel bearing, suspension and steering parts too. This is why Continental will now be offering these products alongside its belts and drive components, all from a single source. The first new product category to join the range will be wheel bearings.

NOW AVAILABLE: WHEEL BEARINGS

Starting in September 2024, Continental will be offering retailers and workshops the full spectrum of wheel bearing types: from the classic ball bearing to a pre-assembled wheel hub bearing unit with ABS pulse rings and sensors. The range also includes models for electric vehicles, whose greater weight and much higher torque call for specially engineered wheel bearings capable of reliably absorbing huge axial and radial

forces. “With today’s increasingly electrified vehicle fleet, it is vital that mechanics and, above all, drivers can rely on these crucial components more than ever,” says Rolf Sudmann, Head of Automotive Aftermarket in the ContiTech group sector. “This is why we decided to add this product group to our range – so that workshops can benefit from trusted Continental quality in this area too.”

UNCOMPROMISING QUALITY

The wheel bearings are manufactured to OEM standards from exceptionally robust high-performance steel. They offer an optimum fit, together with a long lifespan thanks to the use of high-quality lubricating grease. The initial product range is intelligently structured and will be gradually expanded. At present, it comprises 163 different models that allow workshops to cater to the repair requirements of 73% of Europe’s current vehicle fleet. The uncompromising quality Continental delivers allows it to offer registered workshops a five-year guarantee –something no other manufacturer can match. A host of practical services are also available, including free installation instructions and service videos. Plus, all relevant product information can be accessed using the handy article search function in the Product Information Center (PIC).

But that’s not all: suspension and steering components will also be added in the future “We are seeking to capitalize on our specialist expertise in the field of high-quality elastomer products and rubber/metal bonds to strengthen and build on our status as a premium partner in the automotive aftermarket,” explains Sudmann. “We will therefore be adding further high-quality suspension parts to our portfolio before the end of 2024. These will be followed by steering components in 2025. This expansion of the range is another logical step for us toward a one-stop shop offering an extensive overall product portfolio for the aftermarket.”

AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES:

THE FUTURE IS COMING, BUT SLOWLY

Fully autonomous vehicles (AVs) are being developed across the globe, but their widespread adoption will be a gradual process. Even though companies have been working on this technology for years, we are likely still a decade or more away from seeing AVs on the road in large numbers.

Several hurdles must be overcome before AVs can become mainstream, with safety being the primary concern. A significant challenge is ensuring that AVs can interact safely with manually operated vehicles, as well as with pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR MECHANICS?

While the AV market may develop slowly, it’s poised to bring significant changes to vehicle usage and repair needs Autonomous vehicles will likely see more usage compared to traditional vehicles, meaning more frequent repairs and maintenance. As AVs become a reality, garages and workshops may experience an uptick in business

Much of the technology found in AVs will overlap with systems seen in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrids. Technicians preparing for the AV era should start by familiarizing themselves with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), as these systems—along with radar and lidar technologies—are foundational to AVs. These sensors enable AVs to detect and navigate their surroundings safely, and they’re already appearing in many vehicles today.

In addition to these more conventional technologies, AVs will introduce highly advanced systems that s technicians must understand. These include software programming, machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), and even robotics—key technologies that will drive the functionality of AVs.

UNDERSTANDING AUTONOMOUS DRIVING LEVELS

Autonomous vehicles are categorized by the level of automation they incorporate, from basic driver assistance to full autonomy. The levels are defined as follows:

Level 0: No automation. All vehicle functions are controlled entirely by a human driver.

Level 1: The vehicle can assist with steering or acceleration, but all other aspects remain under human control.

Level 2: Comparable to advanced cruise control, the vehicle can take safety actions autonomously, but the driver must remain alert and in control.

Level 3: Under certain conditions, the driver can hand over some critical safety functions to the vehicle, though they still need to be present and ready to take over.

Level 4: The vehicle can drive itself almost all the time without human input, although there may be limitations in unmapped areas or extreme weather conditions.

Level 5: Full automation, with the vehicle capable of driving in all conditions and environments without any human intervention.

News from Automechanika 2024 in Frankfurt

Elring: Quality leader for passenger cars and commercial vehicles.

Car and commercial vehicle engines run, run and runideally. Damage and defects can occur, but can be avoided by installing the right parts. Elring has been one of the quality leaders in the spare parts industry for decades. The innovative strength and technical expertise for this originates from ElringKlinger AG.

HDEP: The Heavy Duty Engine Platform from Daimler Trucks

One of the highlights at this year‘s Automechanika was the OM 471 foam engine (Gen. I & Gen. II). The Heavy Duty Engine Platform was developed by Daimler Trucks to meet the increasing demands in the commercial vehicle sector. The HDEP engines are used in various heavy-duty trucks and commercial vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, Detroit Diesel, MTU and Mitsubishi Fuso Truck.

Important development goals of the HDEP motors:

Compliance

strict emission regulations

One of the main reasons for the development of HDEP engines was to comply with increasingly strict emissions regulations, in particular the Euro VI standard. These standards require a drastic reduction in pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulates released during combustion processes. The HDEP engines are equipped with modern exhaust gas a ertreatment systems to ful l these standards.

E

ciency and fuel savings

Another goal was to improve fuel e ciency. By introducing new technologies such as common-rail injection systems with high injection pressure and improved combustion processes, the fuel consumption of HDEP engines has been reduced. This not only saves costs for operators, but also helps to reduce CO₂ emissions.

Performance and reliability

Vehicles in this sector o en have to work under di cult conditions - with heavy loads, long distances and intensive use. The HDEP motors are therefore designed for a long service life and remain reliable even under intensive use.

Modularity and flexibility

The aim was to create an engine platform that could be used flexibly in di erent truck models and areas of application. By using a common platform, development costs could be reduced and maintenance simpli ed, while at the same time di erent performance levels and technical requirements could be catered for.

Live demonstration during Automechanika

During the live demonstration at Automechanika, an OM 471 engine was prepared in a pattern to clearly explain the following technical highlights:

Cylinder-head gasket

The structure and function of the cylinder-head gasket were presented in detail. Particular attention was paid to the measurement methods for surface roughness and liner protrusion. The roughness measurement was visually illustrated and explained in detail to emphasise the importance of optimising the surfaces of the cylinderhead and engine block.

Engine variants

Di erences between Generation 1 (without re ring) and Generation 2 (with re ring) were explained. The introduction of the re ring leads to an improvement in combustion and increases the sealing performance at higher pressures.

Oil seals and elastomer seals

The structure and function of these seals were also presented, with a special focus on their use with silicones.

A complete overview of Elring‘s sealing expertise can be found in the compact HDEP brochure.

Volkswagen EA888: Innovative and e cient

Another highlight was the presentation of an EA888 engine from Volkswagen. This engine family is at the heart of numerous models within the VW Group and is used in Volkswagen vehicles as well as in vehicles from the Group brands Audi, Seat, Škoda and Porsche. The history of the EA888 engine is characterised by innovation, continuous development and the pursuit of e ciency and performance. This engine family was rst presented in 2006 as part of Volkswagen‘s new engine strategy. It was intended to replace the existing EA113 engine series. The aim of the development was fuel e ciency, emission reduction and performance optimisation. Initially, they were introduced as 1.8 and 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbo engines. The rst generation of the EA888 engine came onto the market in 2006 and introduced new technologies such as direct injection, turbocharging and variable valve control (valve li ). The second generation of the EA888 engine came onto the market around 2009 and brought further improvements, particularly with regard to emission reduction and compliance with the increasingly stringent European emissions standards. The EA888 Gen 3 engines arrived in 2012 and represented a signi cant step towards modern e ciency and environmental friendliness. This generation o ered a wide range of technological innovations: Improved injection systems, water-cooled exhaust manifold, dual injection and mild hybrid approach. With the fourth generation from 2018, the focus was placed even more strongly on electri cation. With improved mild hybrid systems, particulate lters for petrol engines and performance optimisation, clear accents were set here.

Professional repair of an EA888 engine in the Elring Garage

During Automechanika 2024, Elring trainers demonstrated their extensive expertise in repairing an EA888 engine in the Elring Garage. The focus was on the following topics:

Front cover

The trainers demonstrated the correct removal of the front cover and the replacement of the integrated PTFE oil seal. Particular attention was paid to the correct removal of the old sealant.

Valve cover

The removal of the valve cover was also explained in detail. The anaerobic sealing compound was used and it was shown how to apply it correctly to ensure a reliable seal.

Surface inspection

A er removing the valve cover, the surfaces of the cylinder-head and engine block were inspected. The trainers explained how the surfaces are checked for distortion and which methods are used to assess the surface condition. In order to ful l the requirements of a new cylinderhead gasket, it was recommended that the surfaces be ground flat by an engine reconditioner. At the end of the demonstration, the engine was professionally reassembled. The use of sealing compound and tightening the screws to the correct torque was explained.

This article explores the drivers behind this change, the rise of Chinese brands in the EV market, and how mobility is evolving from ownership to diverse user-ship models.

PART 1: ELECTRIFICATION – THE FUTURE IS HERE

1.1

The Shift to Electric

Europe’s transition towards electric mobility is accelerating, driven by favorable government policies, increased charging infrastructure, and a push for greener technologies. Norway, for instance, leads with BEV adoption, where electric vehicles have grown by 235% since 2016, signifying a strong shift away from internal combustion engines. According to GiPA, the Euro trends study further reveals that new BEV registrations across the EU5 have captured a significant market share, indicating the region’s commitment to sustainability. This rapid growth is expected to continue, with projections estimating that by 2035, over

45 million additional electric vehicles will be on European roads, reinforcing the EU’s vision for a greener automotive future.

1.2 Drivers’ Preferences and Adoption Trends

The rise of BEVs is largely driven by cost savings and environmental awareness. A considerable 76.5% of European respondents, as highlighted by GiPA’s studies, have pointed to reduced fuel expenses as a primary motivator. Additionally, lower maintenance costs and advanced technology of electric vehicles are significant factors drawing consumer interest. BEVs generally require less frequent visits to workshops, with longer intervals between maintenance, which translates into cost savings for owners. This has resonated well with various

consumer segments, particularly younger, tech-savvy drivers who are inclined towards sustainable and innovative solutions.

1.3 The Role of Chinese Brands in the EV Market

Chinese automotive manufacturers are solidifying their presence in the European market, capitalizing on affordability and innovation. Recent data indicates that in the first nine months of 2024, over 150,000 Chinese-manufactured EVs were registered across Europe, representing a consistent rise compared to the previous year. This trend underscores the strategic push by Chinese automakers, which now include brands like Vinfast, BYD, Nio, and Link & Co., to capture market share with competitively priced and technologically advanced BEVs. According to GiPA, these brands’ ability to introduce feature-rich vehicles at lower costs has positioned them as serious competitors, challenging traditional European and American manufacturers.

1.4 Understanding Driver Behavior: Mileage and Usage

Driver behavior is also evolving, with a noticeable shift in how vehicles are used. GiPA recent data suggests that the average mileage driven per year has decreased across many regions, influenced by factors such as increased remote working, a surge in e-commerce, and changes in urban com-

muting patterns. In addition, BEV owners are more likely to use digital solutions and connectivity, driven by the promise of cost reductions and the convenience of seamless integration with smart technologies. This shift towards lower mileage and digital integration is redefining how aftermarket services are structured, pushing for efficiency and adaptability to meet the needs of modern drivers.

PART 2: THE EVOLUTION OF MOBILITY – FROM OWNERSHIP TO USERSHIP

2.1 A Shift to Mobility as a Service (MaaS)

The concept of mobility is expanding beyond traditional car ownership. Increasing urbanization, environmental concerns, and the rise of the sharing economy are driving a shift towards user-ship models. Mobility as a Service (MaaS) solutions, such as car-sharing, ride-hailing platforms, and vehicle subscription services, are gaining traction. GiPA’s research indicates that companies like Yandex, BlaBlaCar, and Didi are leading this trend, providing flexible, on-demand mobility options that cater to urban populations. For city dwellers, especially, these services offer an affordable and sustainable alternative to car ownership, alleviating issues like parking, maintenance, and insurance.

2.2 New Mobility Solutions and Urban Adaptations

As cities adapt to this new mobility landscape, there is a growing emphasis on infrastructure that supports electric vehicles and shared mobility solutions. Investments in public charging stations and partnerships between local governments and private companies are facilitating this shift. GiPA’s presentation from the ATR Symposium highlights how major urban centers are redesigning their spaces to prioritize electric and shared mobility, with initiatives like expanded bicycle lanes, pedestrian zones, and dedicated EV charging hubs. This not only reduces emissions but also enhances the overall livability of cities, encouraging healthier, more sustainable urban lifestyles.

2.3 Implications for the Aftermarket

The rise of BEVs and shared mobility solutions presents both challenges and opportunities for the Independent Automotive Aftermarket (IAM). The need for specialized training and equipment for BEV maintenance, along with the integration of telematics, is reshaping service models. Many IAM networks have begun to offer services specifically tailored for EV maintenance and repairs, ensuring workshops are equipped to handle the unique requirements of electric vehicles. According to our last BEV Euro Trends survey in Germany, roughly two-thirds of EV owners had at least one workshop visit in the past 12 months, mostly for routine maintenance. This indicates a steady demand for

regular upkeep, although the frequency is still lower than for traditional ICE vehicles, suggesting fewer wear-and-tear issues and a focus on efficiency

2.4 The Growing Importance of Data and Connectivity

As BEVs become more integrated with digital ecosystems, the role of data and connectivity is becoming increasingly crucial. Manufacturers are not only focusing on improving the technical specifications of electric vehicles but also on enhancing how users interact with these vehicles. According to GiPA’s insights, modern BEVs come equipped with advanced infotainment systems, seamless app integration, and even

vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capabilities, which allow vehicles to interact with energy networks. This shift towards smarter, more connected vehicles is paving the way for new business models within the mobility sector, including subscription-based services for software updates, battery management, and enhanced safety features.

Eurol sets the standard with

CO2-neutral lubricants

An increasing number of companies and consumers are actively working to reduce their CO2 emissions. To support this trend towards sustainability, Eurol has introduced a new concept called Carbon Neutral. This concept includes a new line of four CO2-neutral lubricants with a wide range of applications. These products contain up to 80% renewable raw materials and are formulated to be climate-neutral. They are suitable for heavy-duty applications, commercial vehicles, and passenger cars.

Legislation

The European Green Deal, which aims for a climate-neutral Europe by 2050 underscore the urgency of sustainability. Companies have various tools at their disposal to lower their CO2 emissions. In the logistics sector for example, more than 500 participants in 14 European countries take part in the ‘Lean & Green’ CO2 reduction program. In addition to laws and regulations, more and more companies recognise that sustainability is not only beneficial for the environment but also for their image and future viability.

Automotive

Eurol’s new line of CO2-neutral lubricants consists of four products that cover a wide range of fleet needs. The Eurol Carbon Neutral DXS 5W-30 engine oil is suitable for various passenger cars, including models from Opel, Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, as well as Korean and Japanese brands. For vehicles with automatic transmissions, the Eurol Carbon Neutral ATF 6700, a low-viscosity transmission oil, is now also available in a carbon-neutral version. These CO2-neutral lubricants from Eurol offer the same

high quality and performance as traditional Eurol products, without compromising on effectiveness.

Truly CO2-neutral

Eurol’s carbon-neutral lubricants are produced primarily with renewable components of plant origin. The packaging consists of 50% recycled material and is fully recyclable. Eurol has chosen to make the products intrinsically CO2 neutral, thereby preventing emissions rather than compensating for them through emission certificates or tree planting projects. CO2 compensation often gives the impression that polluting behaviour can be bought off. The impact of this is often overestimated, according to research by environmental scientist Thales Pupo West from VU University in Amsterdam, among others.

Practical example

To make the carbon savings more concrete, we look at the impact when a fleet of 10 passenger cars and 20 vans changes engine oil on average twice a year and transmission oil every 3 years. Using Eurol Carbon Neutral, this saves more than 780 kg of CO2 annually in total. This saving is approximately equal to a distance of 6,500 kilometres driven by

an average car, nearly 4 million Google searches (source: Google blog), and drinking over 13,000 cups of coffee (foodfootprint.nl).

Easy transition

Switching to CO2-neutral products is straightforward. Eurol has integrated these products into their online oil advisor. By entering a vehicle type or license plate, CO2-neutral variants are also shown if suitable. The advisor also shows the CO2 savings achieved per vehicle. Eurol advisors are ready to provide support in the transition, including looking at other sustainable product concepts within Eurol’s portfolio.

For more information about Eurol’s CO2-neutral lubricants, one can visit Eurol’s website or contact their account manager.

» EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE SENSORS FROM HERTH+BUSS

Indispensable protection against overheating

Exhaust gas temperature sensors are used in both petrol and diesel vehicles. In the latter, they mainly provide protection for components and overheating, including turbochargers and catalytic converters. They also ensure accurate regeneration of the diesel particulate filter by ensuring that the necessary temperature is achieved for the free-burning process. In petrol engines, exhaust gas temperature sensors are mainly found in vehicles with modern GDI engines or turbo engines. These are frequently installed, especially in the context of the downsizing trend. Here, too, the exhaust gas temperature sensors perform similar functions. They protect turbochargers and catalytic converters, take over fault detection and on-board diagnostics for the petrol particle filter.

Symptoms of defective EGT sensors

Defective or even completely failed exhaust gas temperature sensors become noticeable, for example, when fuel efficiency decreases. In this case, fuel consumption increases without benefiting the vehicle’s drive system, because the regeneration of the exhaust gas temperature sensor takes longer. Defective AGT sensors can also lead to a deterioration in driving behaviour.

Possible causes of a defect

Due to their installation position, exhaust gas temperature sensors are exposed to extremely high temperature fluctuations and thus high loads. Excessive temperatures of over 900° Celsius can hinder regeneration or even cause it to be aborted. This can then result in damage to the diesel particulate fil ter. Another possible cause can be strong vibrations that cause internal wires to break off or cause wire breaks. However, defec tive exhaust gas temperature sensors can also cause consequential damage to petrol engines, requiring costly repairs.

Replacing the AGT sensor

If a complication occurs with the exhaust gas temperature sensor, an error is reported in the engine control unit and the engine warning light flashes. The error can then be read out with a diagnostic device and the defective AGT sensor analyzed. Finally, the sensor is replaced. To ensure proper regeneration, the sensor should also be replaced whenever the diesel particulate filter is replaced. We also offer exhaust gas temperature sensors for easy replacement. The Elparts range includes over 350 different AGT sensors that can be used in a wide variety of vehicle models. These include sensors for both diesel and petrol vehicles.

Sockets for safe removal of the sensors

We also offer matching sockets especially for exhaust gas temperature sensors. Due to the high temperatures, AGT sensors literally eat into the thread after some time and can only be unscrewed again with great difficulty and increased effort. Regular ring spanners or open-ended spanners are usually not tight enough or too unstable to loosen the sensors safely. This poses the risk of slipping and injuring yourself. Our socket spanners, on the other hand, are shaped so that they fit perfectly on almost all exhaust gas temperature sensors and lambda sensors. In addition, the reinforced design enables a secure hold even when a lot of force is applied.

INSIGHTS FROM THE AFTERMARKET WORLD AND BEYOND

As they

OVER 100 YEARS OF HYDRAULIC EXPERTISE

commemorate their 105th anniversary on November 19th,

KYB reflects on the company’s history.

KYB traces its roots back to the Kayaba Research Centre, which was established in 1919.

Shiro Kayaba, who was 21 when he founded the Centre, was a remarkable inventor who loved freedom and an original thinker who was too proud to rely on others. There were 30 researchers at this Centre.

Shiro’s spirit of freedom and creativity was to become the driving force behind the establishment of KYB.

After the Centre’s building burned to the ground in the fires following the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, he had no choice but to go to work for the Imperial Japanese Navy as an engineer to develop safety equipment, a role in which he succeeded in devising take off and landing equipment for aircraft carriers. In his three years with the navy, he developed six kinds of take off and landing equipment, and they were used on some of the largest ships in the Imperial Navy.

The take off and landing equipment that Shiro developed had an extremely groundbreaking feature, a novel idea of controlling equipment on deck remotely using pressurized hydraulic fluid and air. Before he developed his system,

the machinery on the deck of the ship had to be operated by hand by a crewmember. Using a hydraulic system, Shiro’s new equipment could be operated by remote control from the ship’s control room. This was the very first use of hydraulics for this purpose, and the beginning of Shiro’s lifework.

In 1935, Shiro established Kayaba Manufacturing Co., Ltd., and went on to devise numerous products. One of these, hydraulic buffers (oleo struts) for the take off and landing equipment, became the predecessor for the automotive shock absorbers, which KYB started manufacturing in 1946.

The invention led to the KYB’s current hydraulic technologies, which control equipment that is subject to many tons of force accurately while absorbing the optimal amount of vibration. Current shock absorber technologies and developments continue to be groundbreaking, such as IDC, Prosmooth and SustainaLub.

Shiro, who dissolved the Kayaba Research Centre in order to establish Kayaba Manufacturing Co., Ltd., cited “Creativity, Vitality and Harmony” as the core tenets of the new company’s basic philosophy.

LIQUI MOLY warns that deposits and wear occur even with modern diesel fuels

New alternative fuels offer customers a wider range at the fuel pumps. B10 and XTL or HVO are more climatefriendly diesel fuels. In an interview, David Kaiser, Head of Research and Development at lubricant specialist LIQUI MOLY, explains what to look out for before filling up with the new fuel variants.

B10, XTL, HVO – three abbreviations, but only two new fuel types. What does that mean exactly?

David Kaiser: “With B10 diesel, the explanation is simple. Compared to the previous B7 diesel, which has a biodiesel content of seven percent, this is ten percent for B10. The remaining 93 and 90 percent are fossil diesel. In contrast to HVO, the fuel is still made from low-processed natural materials. And that’s where we come to the next abbreviation. HVO stands for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oils. They are made from waste food or vegetable oil. XTL is the shorthand for X-To-Liquid. The X stands for any energy source that is liquefied. The starting material can be any raw material. And it is converted into paraffinic diesel in a synthetic production process.”

The procedure is always the same?

David Kaiser: “No, there are two different ones. In the Fischer-Tropsch process, the fuels are produced from a synthesis gas, which serves as the basis. This is composed of hydrogen and carbon monoxide and can originally be biomass, coal, natural gas or green hydrogen and CO₂ from the air. The additive gives the fuel its name: BTL is Biomass-To-Liquid. In the case of CTL, the C stands for coal, and in the case of gas, the fuel is called GTL when using natural gas or e-fuel when using hydrogen from electrolysis. The other process uses hydrogenated vegetable oils, HVO for short. It can be refueled in pure form or mixed with fossil diesel.”

Are there more specific designations for these mixtures?

David Kaiser: “Yes. Depending on the HVO content, the fuel is called Climate Diesel 25, Climate Diesel 90 or HVO 100 respectively C.A.R.E. Diesel.”

About LIQUI MOLY

With around 4,000 items, LIQUI MOLY offers a global, uniquely broad range of automotive chemicals: motor oils and additives, greases and pastes, sprays and car care, glues and sealants. Founded in 1957, LIQUI MOLY develops and produces in Germany. There, it has been voted the best brand in the lubricant category for many years. The company sells its products in around 150 countries. www.liqui-moly.com

Who can fill up with these alternative fuels?

David Kaiser: “Any vehicle approved by the manufacturer. If there is a symbol with the marking XTL or B10 on the inside of the fuel filler flap, the fuel can be filled without hesitation.”

How big are the differences to conventional diesel?

David Kaiser: “In practice, the new diesel variants do not perform worse than the diesel available to date. Tests have shown this. Due to their synthetic nature, XTL and HVO are even higher quality from a technical point of view, as they are free from aromatics and other by-products. At up to 74, the cetane number is also higher than that of fossil diesel (54). This has a positive effect for the combustion behavior in the engine. In addition, 30 percent less particulate matter and nitrogen oxides are produced. What is more, the wear of technical components is lower; these include the particulate filter and exhaust gas recirculation system (EGR). Compared to biodiesel or mineral oil diesel, the alternative fuel burns cleaner and is more resistant to aging.”

Sounds very good for car drivers, less good for a manufacturer of additives that protect against wear and ensure clean combustion. Are fuel additives from LIQUI MOLY no longer needed?

David Kaiser: “And how! 30 percent less wear on technical components means less wear, but not wear-free. Residues and deposits are also still produced as a result of the combustion process, just less than in the B7 diesel. To ensure that the engine runs as long as possible, we also recommend additives that clean and maintain the system when using the new fuel types; for example, the Diesel Engine System Cleaner. Especially because the new diesel types do not have the same lubricating properties as conventional fuel for compression-ignition engines. Our diesel additives can be used safely in B10 and XTL.”

Finally, do you have an expert tip?

David Kaiser: “If you want to switch from fossil diesel to HVO and XTL, it is advisable to clean the fuel system with additives. This removes existing deposits. If you then add additives to the tank regularly when filling up with the new fuels, you prevent combustion residues.”

Benefits at a Glance

■ TruckServices: meeting all your wheelend service needs

■ Premium-quality hub & bearing solutions from OE supplier Fersa

■ Specialised tools – easier, safer fitment

■ Reliable Expert distributor network

■ Lower Total Cost of Ownership

Commercial vehicle workshops are under increasing pressure to minimize downtime and return commercial vehicles and trailers to operational service as quickly as possible. Consequently, the one-stop shop approach for fast parts procurement has become popular. Parts can be ordered online and delivered quickly, enabling vehicles to be back on the road in the shortest possible time.

Often those parts will be cheaper, sourced from one of numerous global suppliers manufacturing generic, will-fit parts for a range of vehicles and trailers. The distributor benefits because it reduces the quantity of stock required to service customers operating a variety of vehicle makes.

However, workshops should beware of the risk! Generic parts are unlikely to be the same material specification or manufactured to the same tolerances as a genuine OE part. That compromises inservice life that will only result in increased downtime and more workshop visits. Nor will they benefit from tools specifically designed to make fitting the part simpler without risking any accidental damage that can affect service performance.

Knorr-Bremse TruckServices – your one-stop shop

Our service portfolio is based on the principles of safety, quality, and economy throughout the entire product life cycle. We want every vehicle to get back on the road again as quickly as possible. Making sure your vehicles run reliably is important to us. We continuously optimize the quality of service we offer to commercial vehicle owners/operators and set new standards for outstanding service. Our customers can tell the difference.

All our products are OEM-quality because only OEM-quality replacement parts can guarantee the right quality, reliability, and longevity. So, we only partner with market-leading OE suppliers who have the same dedication to quality manufacturing and customer service as we do. All the parts available through TruckServices that are not manufactured by Knorr-Bremse itself are manufactured from trusted and vetted OE supplier partners.

With the addition of Spanish multinational bearing manufacturer Fersa to our service offering we are now able to offer a complete portfolio of wheelend aftermarket solutions. Close cooperation between Knorr-Bremse and Fersa enables us to offer more complex and quality drive solutions for our customers. Now there’s no need to take risks with non-OE products simply to get a part faster.

Fersa part reference numbers will be integrated into the TruckServices catalogue, so workshops will quickly find all they need for wheelend replacement parts.

Fersa has over 50 years’ experience of manufacturing bearings for commercial vehicles and trailers. Today there are more than two million trucks worldwide with Fersa bearings. Its range extends from tapered roller bearings to complete wheel hubs and its OE customers include Daimler, Iveco, and Volvo. It also covers 90% of applications for trailers, including BPW and Schmitz Cargobull.

■ Tapered bearings: Engineered to withstand heavy loads.

■ Truck Wheel End Kits: This patented Fersa solution works well for all types of commercial vehicle application, prolongs life and delivers reliable and safe repairs in the workshop. It comprises high-precision interior and exterior bearing sets, precision-aligned and lubricated for life. It ensures the effective mounting of bearings and seals to the correct torque and the correct alignment of the bearings in the hub.

■ Compact Wheel Truck: A sealed assembly composed of two bearings housed in one casting. It is characterized for perfectly aligned bearings, lubricated for life, and preset to meet the highest operational demands.

■ Truck Wheel Hubs: Two interior, preset bearing sets, housed in one outer hub.

■ Wheel Hub Assembly: Two interior bearings and the bushing are integrated in one hub. This precise axial clearance and compact design, delivers optimal performance at high loads in a single housing while simplifying assembly for quick and easy replacement. The unit is greased for life so maintenance free.

Fersa shares the same commitment to continual improvement across all areas of its business as Knorr-Bremse. It is compliant with ISO TS/IATF 16949, the manufacturing standard based on ISO 9001 developed specifically for the automotive industry. It applies the same quality demanded by its OEM customers for its aftermarket product range. There is full product traceability on each product.

OE quality – it matters!

Bearings are a critical safety component and need to be strong enough to cope with heavy radial and axial loads during operations. Fersa specifies the correct material to cope with the designed load. Exceeding that load can cause stress and ultimate premature failure of the bearing. It’s why replacing a genuine OE Fersa part with a generic will-fit product is a risky choice and a false economy.

Will-fit replacement bearings and bearing kits are widely available in the aftermarket, but there are critical differences with OE quality bearings which will impact on reliability, durability, and total cost of ownership.

Tapered roller bearing may all look remarkably similar but cheaper will-fit replacement bearings are unlikely to have been manufactured to the precise dimensions necessary for durability in service and for trouble-free fitting. Cheap replacement bearings may be less accurately machined leading to uneven distribution and wear. If a new bearing doesn’t fit properly, it leads to uneven distribution of the load in the bearing pack resulting in flaking or chipping which causes wear and a shortened in-service life.

Cheap bearings can have inferior quality seals or seals that are unsuitable for arduous operations in hostile environments. This can

result in dirt, dust, or water ingress, causing premature wear of the bearing and loss and contamination of the lubricant.

Grease

A poor-quality grease is often the culprit for premature bearing failure. Without the correct grease, bearings will suffer from excess wear and short in-service life. The thinner grease often found in cheap replacement bearings will break down in high-operational temperatures, causing damage to the bearing surface.

Fersa adapts the grease to match the conditions a bearing is manufactured to tolerate. Its greases remain effective at temperatures up to 160°C.

The right tool for the job.

Replacing bearings can be a time-consuming task for workshops. Bearings must be correctly seated, clearances checked, and the correct amount of preloading applied. If there is too much movement between the rollers and races, more wear will result. Excessive preloading can result in excess wear and unplanned future workshop visits.

Knorr-Bremse customers rely on having the best workshop tools to help minimise downtime and ensure new parts are fitted correctly. We can now offer a complete range of maintenance tools from Fersa for hub and bearing replacement tasks. The tools are specially designed for each application and product for accurate and safe replacement of bearings and hubs. For example, the Universal Hub Puller, together with the assembly and disassembly plates that Knorr-Bremse also offers, facilitates the quick and safe removal of hubs from a wide range of commercial vehicle and trailer models.

Wheelend kits are equipped with blue plastic covers that can also be used as mounting tools.

For bearings, there is a hydraulic hub puller which allows for faster and safer extraction which adapts to any axle, from or rear. It uses the bolts and nuts of the hub itself, regardless of their size and thread. Also available are a universal toolkit for assembly and disassembly with a wheel bearing press that includes five extendable anvils, five plates and a removable rod that adapts to all hub models regardless of the brand and dedicated tools for Daimler, Scania and Volvo applications.

Keep it running! That is our mission!

Thanks to our established TruckServices Expert network, our OE quality products are delivered quickly, right where they are needed. Distributors who partner with us keep key service products in stock at all times, for outstanding availability.

Clean mobility – Focus on the future with MANN-FILTER

In the third and final part of this series, MANN-FILTER takes a look at future filtration solutions for the electromobility sector.

Millions of people around the world are suffering from the effects of polluted air, not only outdoors in spaces with a lot of traffic, but also inside vehicles. It is therefore becoming essential to improve air quality by reducing particulate matter and harmful gasses. With its latest innovation in cabin air filtration, global filtration expert MANN+HUMMEL is concentrating on a particle size that is becoming increasingly important – socalled ultra-fine particles (less than 0.1 micrometer). These can get particularly deep into the human body and cause harmful damage there. The World Health Organization (WHO) is also paying particular attention to ultra-fine particles and in its latest air quality guideline has called for this particle size to be included in routine measurements.

Regardless of the drive system, cabin air filters play a major role in providing drivers and occupants with clean and healthy air. In electric vehicles, there is also a trend toward improving air quality through multistage filter systems.

The future of cabin air filtration: multi-stage HEPA filter systems

MANN+HUMMEL has developed HEPA filter systems to effectively protect people from these microscopic impurities. The abbreviation HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air. It is not a protected term, so special care must be taken here. The addition of “in accordance with DIN EN 1822 and ISO 29463” indicates whether a filter actually meets the high requirements of European and international standards. “Our filter media meet these requirements,” explains Christoph Krautner, Manager Engineering Filtration Materials at MANN+HUMMEL.

„Our multi-stage cabin air filter systems with highly efficient HEPA filters offer protection through clean room quality air filtration, as is also the case in operating rooms, for example. Depending on the HEPA class, at least 99.95% of the particles are reliably removed from

the air, including harmful bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms, even the previously mentioned ultrafine particles. These are so small that they can easily penetrate into the bloodstream, cause severe damage to organs and be carcinogenic,“ Krautner adds. „We now know that more than 90 percent of the particles in the air are ultra-fine particles. Whether they are safe or not depends on their source and chemical composition.“

MANN+HUMMEL uses the HEPA filter as part of a three-stage system along with a prefilter and a cabin air filter. Both can be equipped either as pure particle filters, in combination with activated carbon or as a third version with biofunctional and microbial coating. The particle filter uses a special nonwoven material that efficiently retains dust, soot and pollen, while the activated carbon filter adsorbs harmful gasses and odors. A biofunctional coating binds allergens that can be released from pollen and provides additional protection against the growth of mold and bacteria on the filter medium.

Krautner describes the situation: „Since a HEPA filter can capture much finer particles than a conventional cabin air filter, its fiber structure is significantly denser, which results in significantly lower air permeability. To

Focus on the future with MANN-FILTER

compensate for this, a HEPA filter has more media surface area and thus achieves the lowest possible pressure drop. In fact, the surface area of the filter media in our HEPA filters is about five times larger than in a conventional element, thanks to a smaller pleat spacing. It is therefore currently not possible to replace a standard cabin air filter with a HEPA element. Air conditioning systems are not built for these high efficiency filters. Instead, the HEPA filter is located in a separate system – usually outside the air conditioning system – together with a prefilter, as protection for the HEPA filter.“

Smart solution to prevent air pollution in vehicle interiors

Smart multi-stage HEPA filter systems are also designed to ensure that filtration only takes place when it is needed. An intelligent control system records the air quality and provides data on the basis of which the system decides which of the three filters the air should flow through. „This ensures that the HEPA filter is activated automatically as the final filtration stage only when required, for example, when the outside air is heavily contaminated, such as in tunnels or in traffic jams. This allows the size of the system to be kept small and extends the life of the HEPA filter,“ according to Krautner.

Future filter technology ensures less particulate matter

Another future filtration solution from MANN+HUMMEL for the independent aftermarket is the reduction of particulate matter generated in road traffic. These particulate emissions include not only exhaust gasses, but also particles that enter the air as a result of braking and the wear of tires and road surfaces. The problem of particulate matter is therefore independent of the drive system and also applies to electric vehicles. To prevent this particulate matter from entering the atmosphere in the first place, the experts at MANN+HUMMEL take

care of these particles as soon as they are created. They have developed a wide range of solutions to improve the particulate matter balance of vehicles. In addition to a brake dust particle filter that reduces brake dust emissions directly at the source, there is also a filter for the roof or underside of vehicles that collects particulate matter from the ambient air.

Independent aftermarket – maintenance potential of cabin air filter

Cabin air filters will remain an essential component of future vehicles – regardless of the drive system. Up to 540,000 liters of air per hour can flow into a vehicle via the ventilator. In this way, pollutants can enter the vehicle interior from the outside and remain there for a long time – increasing the air pollution in the vehicle interior. This is precisely where multi-stage cabin air filter systems with their advantages come into play, but also effective cabin air filters such as the innovative MANN-FILTER FreciousPlus with its biofunctional coating and effective protection against allergens, harmful gasses and particulate matter. In order for a cabin air filter to function properly, it is important to replace it regularly. The recommended replacement interval is 15,000 kilometers or once a year.

Multi-stage filtration concept

“Our goal for the future is to offer further cutting-edge technologies for inside the vehicle, such as digitally displaying the filter status and air quality in real time –for health and comfort in the vehicle,” concludes Krautner.

Around the world, MANN-FILTER offers a comprehensive range of filter products in original equipment quality for the aftermarket. With innovative solutions to new filtration challenges, the experts at MANN+HUMMEL are developing the filters of tomorrow in today’s vehicles and machines. Because in the future, customers must also be able to rely on MANN-FILTER – Perfect parts. Perfect service.

In the service, maintenance and repair (SMR) sector, the TecFleet solution supports process automation. The integration of telematics data from CARUSO now o ers innovative use cases. The collaboration of TecAlliance and its subsidiary enables more transparency, e ciency and cost control in fleet management.

Full control with telematics data

By integrating vehicle data such as vehicle position, fuel consumption, mileage or loading status in the TecFleet portal, fleet operators can implement innovative use cases in their vehicle management and reduce operating costs.

Fleet managers and operators face numerous challenges in managing their vehicles. These include optimising vehicle utilisation and availability while minimising operating costs and repair times. They need to keep track of the condition and activities of their vehicles in order to identify and rectify potential problems at an early stage. In this context, telematics data is invaluable as it provides comprehensive insight into the condition of the fleet.

With its TecFleet solution, TecAlliance, the leading data and process expert in the automotive aftermarket, supports fleet operators in all SMR processes. From automated review and approval of quotes to automated invoice review and approval, intelligent data and services enable significant cost savings and more e cient processes.

The integration of telematics data from CARUSO, the neutral, open and secure marketplace for automotive data, now creates additional optimisation opportunities.

Monitoring mileage helps identify vehicle overuse or underuse. This allows planning of mileage-based maintenance and calculation of the exact cost per kilometre. The transmission of the vehicle‘s location at the beginning and end of a trip, or – depending on data protection settings – even during the trip, enables optimal deployment planning.

The fuel and battery status of pool vehicles can be called up in the TecFleet portal to optimise fuel costs and ensure that vehicles are returned fully fuelled or charged.

A detailed vehicle overview provides a clear view of the fleet‘s condition at any time. It transparently displays which vehicles are at which location with which mileage and whether there are any anomalies, such as upcoming maintenance work or error messages.

Telematics solution from Hella Gutmann

With macsLive information such as critical parameters and stored error messages are automatically transmitted to the breakdown service, fleet operator or workshop.

Fleet operators, car manufacturers, insurers, break-down services and garages could benefit from good real-time data within a defined vehicle pool, either by recording and transmitting vehicle locations, driving patterns, signs of wear, fault codes or system para-meters. In partnership with the French telematics specialist Munic S.A., Hella Gutmann has taken this as an opportunity to develop a cloud-based telematics solution for professionals.

The special feature: macsLive enables in-depth diagnostics of vehicles on the road in a way that was previously only possible in the workshop – at least in the multibrand sector. On the one hand, vehicle conditions can be permanently monitored live via the cloud-based diagnostic platform. On the other hand, the collected data forms the basis for precise, in-depth vehicle diagnostics in real

time. This enables experts to make the right decision about the necessary measures – such as the mobile deployment of a technician with the right component, efficient remote support, inform-ing a workshop or recommending services to prevent damage.

As with existing telematics solutions, the macsLive dongle must remain permanently plugged into the vehicle’s OBD socket. This is the only way to continuously record vehicle data and transmit it wirelessly to the cloud. However, the practical benefits of telematics solutions stand and fall with the depth and quality of the data and its analysis. This is where macsLive benefits from Munic’s telematics expertise and Hella Gutmann’s unique treasure of data and diagnostic experience. This clearly sets macsLive ahead of the multi-brand telematics solutions available

The cloud-based diagnostics platform macsLive from Hella Gutmann enables in-depth diagnostics of vehicles on the road, as is otherwise only possible stationary in the workshop. (Picture: Hella Gutmann)

on the open market: macsLive allows all control units to be read in depth and live parameters to be scanned. In addition, macsLive in certain cases allows error codes to be deleted remotely, making it possible to temporarily continue the journey to the workshop. This is a clear added value if it means that towing a vehicle can be avoided.

As a genuine multi-brand solution for telematically determining the condition of vehicles, macsLive empowers a broad target group to optimize their range of services and keep vehicles as mobile as possible. The first largescale implementation is already underway at a major German automobile club.
