ZF electrifies aftermarket with premieres of sustainable products and innovative services at Automechanika
ZF will present new product ranges and innovative service concepts to support workshops, distributors, and fleets in this transformation journey.

ZF estimates that by 2030 more than half of all newly produced vehicles worldwide will be pure electric or hybrid electric. ZF Aftermarket will therefore significantly enrich its successful ZF [pro]Tech workshop concept with further innovations in addition to its popular, high-voltage training. Furthermore, ZF is significantly expanding its product portfolio for electric and hybrid vehicles. Since more and more electric and hybrid vehicles are being serviced or repaired in independent workshops, ZF Aftermarket is now offering new high-performance oils: ZF Lifeguard eFluid for electric car reduction gears, electric motors and power electronics, as well as ZF Lifeguard Hybrid for ZF passenger car hybrid transmissions. ZF has been active in the industrial remanufacturing of components and assemblies for vehicles for more than 60 years. At Automechanika, ZF Aftermarket will focus on its significantly enlarged portfolio of remanufactured steering gears for passenger cars and commercial vehicles. TRW steering gears will be newly introduced for high-volume vehicle models. The electromechanical power steering has meanwhile established itself in practically all car segments. However, repairs to the steering gear itself are not possible; this must always be completely replaced. The Wabco Reman range of steering gears for commercial vehicles is also being significantly expanded. ZF Aftermarket reinvents the Automechanika presence with a new concept and a new location in the Forum of Messe Frankfurt. A vivid marketplace for networking, a large main stage for live presentations and a full schedule of training sessions on the workshop stage give visitors a chance to experience a variety of innovations and the large range of ZF Aftermarket expertise.
“After nearly three years of lockdowns, I am delighted to welcome our customers back to our ZF Automechanika booth. Finally, we can show you in person how we can advance the servitization of the mobility ecosystem together”, explains Philippe Colpron, Head of ZF Aftermarket. At Automechanika, ZF Aftermarket will focus in the Forum on presenting new services, innovative products, and a sound knowledge transfer to open a completely new horizon of opportunities for its partners.

Emmanuel Voguet NEXUS Corporate Communication & Sustainability Director Dear Reader, We are delighted to bring you the third edition of IN!SIDE magazine 2022. Among the challenges we have already identified facing our industry and will continue to address are: electrification, talent management and, of course, sus tainability.

challenge presents us with a gro wing stake in the future as the new mobilities revolution gathers pace. There is no perfect recipe! There are initiatives: some of which will disrupt the market, others will reach a dead end; and a few will become unicorn companies. However, all out comes rely on human creation. ‘Where there’s a will, there’s a way Churchill said,’ aptly sums-up our sector’s approach and determination to keep on advancing. As a pioneer, NEXUS is glad to connect the whole aftermarket ecosystem to share news, opinions, views and best practices in order to think through the new mobilities and services of tomorrow. We need to ask ourselves what does innovation mean? What are the areas for improvement? What are the latest innovations? With this in mind, we have designed this special issue of INS!DE (nr. 29) and hope that you will find some of the answers, ideas and inspiration within it; and have an enjoyable read in the process. With good wishes.
In this new edition, we will focus on innovation –the key to the ongoing future development of the automobile aftermarket. Our sector faces nume rous challenges and, without innovation, there is no competitivity, no talent attractivity and no evo Thelution.innovation

Data is sent via the innovative TecDoc Instant Data Processing (IDP) interface: this shortens the time to market because updates can be transmitted almost in real time. All data sent via IDP is immediately integrated and published worldwide in the TecDoc Catalogue and in catalogue solutions based on TecDoc data. Optimal processes from availability request to return TecCom solutions cover all processes related to order processing in the automotive aftermarket ‒ from availability requests and parts ordering to electronic invoices and returns.
The basis for automating these processes is optimum message quality from parts suppliers, combined with the highest possible standardisation and data consistency. With the “TecCom Excellence Program”, TecAlliance offers wholesalers an efficient tool to compare suppliers. The rating system acts as a business catalyst, allowing buyers to evaluate new partnerships and strengthen existing business relationships.
For success in the automotive aftermarket, reaction times, timeliness and accurate product data are crucial. The importance of online commerce is growing rapidly around the world, and so is the need for high-quality data that enables accurate product identification and correct ordering.

For more information visit: www.tecalliance.net
Complaints and returns are a big issue ‒ also in the automotive aftermarket. Professional and transparent processes provide the chance to minimise the time and costs required for these tasks while at the same time increasing long-term customer satisfaction and loyalty. TecCom Returns enables standardised and transparent processing of returns and warranty claims. Via the online portal, wholesalers can immediately create warranty and returns claims free of charge and transmit them to all their suppliers worldwide. Workshops can enter returns claims quickly and easily via the Garage Link, even without access to the TecCom Portal.
TecDoc is increasing customer confidence in online purchasing with its large-scale data quality initiative. Excellent data quality leads to more orders, fewer returns and better service. The customised catalogue and web shop solutions using TecDoc data support aftermarket community members in setting up and optimising their e-commerce activities. At Automechanika, TecAlliance presented the new data management solution DMM Online. With this intuitive online tool, parts manufacturers can manage their product offerings in the TecDoc standard and make them available at points of sale.

INNOVATION TO DRIVE FUTUREFORWARDBUSINESSDEVELOPMENTTRENDS SIDE INSIDE EDITION 29 • SEPTEMBER 2022 14

I studied at the Grenoble Business School (GEM) and then worked for 10 years in financial transac tion support (Audit and Due Diligence at EY), before working in Group financial management within the food retail industry (Ahold) in the Netherlands and North America for 7 years.

How would you define innovation?
I have identified 3 main needs: firstly, to prepare our industry for new business models and oppor tunities (from parts to parts & services). Secondly, to support our industry to adapt to a new mindset (from car ownership to usage of car as a service) thereby diversifying the scope of activities. Thirdly, to provide a unique opportunity to our community to develop and generate new business activities and to differentiate ourselves in highly competitive mar kets. I would also add one further element which is often not considered – that innovation forces our corporate policy to be more flexible and to develop more optimized and mutualized solutions, which is also one of the key strategical elements for our industry.
What is your background?
“INNOVATION
With regard to my background, I am a high-level sportsman and, coming from an entrepreneurial family business, this has focused my attention on entrepreneurship and innovation.
That is why we are proposing some new initiatives to our community to enable them to benefit from creating strategic opportunities to enlarge their scope of activities and services.
What needs does it meet?
To me, innovation can’t be defined, as Innovation is a mindset and a way to act … it’s a way to accept that innovation contributes to the development of our industry, allows us to be better prepared and brings with it significant business opportunities and diversification. Apple Founder Steve Jobs said that those people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones doing it… I truly believe in this. “Stay hungry, stay foolish,” he said. At NEXUS, we have adopted innovation as one of our core values and invested considera ble time structuring it within our organization and community through such applications as Mobilion and Sparker. We have decided to accelerate and embrace innovation as a vital source of business development and that of services that we offer.
THIERRY MUGNIER Chief Financial and Innovation Officer, NEXUS Automotive International IS A MINDSET AND A WAY TO ACT”
How is innovation part of the NEXUS’ DNA?
SIDE INSIDE EDITION 29 • SEPTEMBER 2022 16
Innovation is one of the key strategic components in our decision-making process. It can be used to pilot and monitor a start-up, as well as be utilized to find better ways to act, to mutualize and integrate into best market practices to improve efficiency and adopt them within our community. What are N!’s ambitions in terms of innovation for the coming years?
What is its place in decision-making and strategic orientations?
N! wants to use innovation to drive forward future business development trends within our global aftermarket industry. This will include innovation screening and innovation implementation to ulti mately provide our stakeholders with the best opportunities to maximize their success. NEXUS will also look to develop its own initiatives for our com munity and industry. In the short term, what are the next launches planned at N!? N! is currently working on the finalization of a new mutualized initiative called Sparker. Sparker is to be launched in September 2022 and a great team is working hard on this. Sparker is a unique innovation digital platform for all innovative technologies, servi ces and products in the automotive mobility sector. It will help start-ups to accelerate their growth, diversify their business & commercial strategy and provide our industry with a unique place to actively screen and monitor innovation initiatives. Sparker will also be a global innovation promotor allowing our industry stakeholder to have capacity to manage their inno vation and decide on their innovation investments, in close cooperation and support with Mobilion. We are pleased to announce the introduction of a new supplier category focusing on innovation. This platform will be of major benefit to the N! commu nity allowing the screening, testing and adoption of innovation – the lifeblood of our continuing growth and prosperity. It will enable selected initiatives to be proposed and adopted by our distributors (both parts & services), as part of a diversification of their core business activities – bringing with it an enhanced capacity to enrich their scope of services and enable new trends to be anticipated within automotive services. This new category will be split into a number of industry segments comprising: Mobility, EV, Safety, Connectivity, Sustainability, New Servi ces,... It will be fully coordinated and managed by a dedicated Innovation Committee that was created recently to be a key part of the N! gover nance decision structure.
NEXUS per essence was innovative from its incorpo ration – with a strategy based on fast growing mar kets at the beginning; and proposing new services and new models to our community including mar ketparts.com, Inteliam and Renovatio. These startups, incubated by NEXUS Automotive International, resulted from the strong need to propose central & mutualized services connected to new digital and consolidated trends. NEXUS has now implemented a full innovation pro gram, with some dedicated committees and teams screening, piloting and monitoring innovative initi atives for and by our community – both distributors and manufacturers.
To keep on reinforcing the way innovation is pro moted and adopted within our community and more globally within our industry; and to accele rate the way innovation is accepted and penetra ted into the organization and decisive action of the leaders of our industry.
Definitely, innovation is the key focus of our industry, but it deserves to be better mutualized to make structures even more successful. Inno vation is becoming key to long-term sustainable business development within our industry from adopting new parts, new models and new servi ces which are mandatory in the highly competi tive and changing aftermarket environment. An innovation you want to promote for us?
In general, do you think that innovation is increasingly important in the automotive aftermarket?
Click-Ins is one innovation I would like to promote and be considered as a good example of the role and actions of Nexus. Click-in was screened by Mobilion and promoted by NEXUS towards its community. The service proposed by this start up is truly bringing value to our industry: to our distributors, their customers and to our industry (fleets, leasing companies and Insurance compa Butnies).allow me to also promote one other innova tion – Sparker. There are 6 production lines and production capacity is currently 1.45 million shock absorbers per year. KAMS has 184 employees, 145 of those based on the production lines. The two main types of specialist shock absorber manufactured by KAMS are the REAS and the IDC.
KYB’s Intelligent Damping Control (IDC) suspension system is innovative technology developed by KYB, used on a selection of prestige vehicles. In Europe, it is used by PSA on the Peugeot 508 and on the DS7 and DS9 under the name DS Active Scan Suspension. In Japan, it is available on the Lexus LS and LC and Toyota Crown and Avalon. This smart technology analyses the road profile and sends it to the IDC electronic central unit. It works with four height sensors and three accelerometers to measure the vehicle’s reactions including speed, braking and steering angle among others. The control unit continuously calculates the optimum shock absorber settings to mitigate any irregularity, improving comfort to create a unique and smooth driving experience. It does this via a proportional solenoid valve on each damper which adjusts the inner pressure between the upper and lower chambers, giving individual control of both the compression and rebound on all four wheels. Smoother driving means all four wheels will maintain a better contact with the road, allowing for safer steering and braking.
KYB has three shock absorber factories in Europe, two in Spain and one in Czech Republic all supplying OE and the Aftermarket. KYB also has one purpose built coil spring factory in Czech Republic.

Spotlight On: Advanced ManufacturingSuspensionInEurope
REAS is a damper system that controls vertical vibration and damping force on cornering without electronic devices. It links shock absorbers by a special third shock, which has a floating piston and distributes a damping force on the left or right shock absorber. The system controls the behaviour of the car during braking, cornering and acceleration to manage weight transfer and minimise body roll. It improves contact between the tyres and the road through balanced tyre forces, improves tyre wear, improves handling and provides better driving safety in critical situations. It is used on Audi RS 6 Avant, Audi RS 5 Coupé and Sportback and Audi RS 4 Avant vehicles under the name Dynamic Ride Control. Each set of REAS shock absorbers is connected to the central valve unit, ensuring optimum operation and precision for these high performance vehicles.
KYB Advanced Manufacturing Spain (KAMS) is at the forefront of specialist high technology shock absorber manufacturing and was built specifically for that purpose. KAMS is based in Los Arcos, near Pamplona. Production began in 2009 with the first OE project between KYB and BMW, the supply of front and rear shock absorbers for the 5 Series. In 2010, supply for PSA and Audi was transferred from KYB’s other Spanish factory KYBSE.

REPLACEMENTRATHERPROMOTINGREPAIRTHAN

REDUCING THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF OUR CLAIMS MANAGEMENT
One of their key objectives is to develop insurance products that will have a positive impact on the cli mate and the environment, in order to reach €1.3 billion of “green” premiums by 2023 (compared to €1.1 billion in 2020). These products include: price incentives for the adoption of electric cars or “pay as you drive” formulas that encourage less vehicle use; and guarantees that are integra ted into home insurance products covering the installation of renewable energy equipment such as photovoltaic panels and geothermal energy. Claims management is also an integral part of this strategy. Environmental preservation and inflati on are major factors and concerns which are re flected in the claims management of an insurance company. Indeed, the environmental impact of re pairing a vehicle can vary, depending on whether damaged parts are repaired, replaced with reu sed parts, or new parts are used. The same is true for the cost of these repairs: a repair will cost less than a replacement with a reused part, which in turn will cost less than a replacement with a new part. It is therefore essential for an insurer to promote repairs and the use of reused parts. In practice, we face different issues. When con sidering the subject of parts repair - like many other sectors - the shortage of skilled labor is
CELINE SOUBRANNE Group SustainabilityChief Officer, AXA JEREMIE VISCUSO Chief Claims Officer, Direct Assurances

AXA has long been committed to an ambitious sustainable development strategy. In 2015, the Group was the first financial player in the world to divest from the coal industry. In line with its purpose formalized in 2020: “acting for human progress by protecting what matters”, AXA took a further step in 2021, integrating Climate in its strategic plan “driving progress 2023”.

a major problem. In the body shop, for exam ple, the experience of the workforce will have a strong influence on the repair rate of the parts. A qualified body repairer will perform re pairs on parts far better and faster, whilst a less qualified body repairer will often be more efficient replacing parts directly, despite the economic and environmental impact of this. Regarding the use of reused parts, our customers are very aware of the circular economy and re cycling. Two thirds of them say that they are in favor of using them. Unfortunately, we are facing a problem of access to these second-hand parts. Only 20% of policyholders who go to a gara ge for the repair of their vehicles are offered a reused part. There is currently no simple plat form allowing the repairer to know about parts availability within the market or their conditi on. This leads to a vicious circle: if repairers do not ask for parts, recyclers do not make them available, and vice versa. As an insurer, we are trying to get recyclers to do more, and we are working with repairers to get them to do this.
Promoting repair, rather than replacement and the use of reused parts, is also virtuous in a context of inflation. Indeed, these two ap proaches make it possible to reduce the cost of vehicle repairs and thus limit the impact on the evolution of insurance premiums. Which service tasks are (still) necessary for the braking systems of e-cars (hybrid vehicles and battery-powered electric vehicles)?
Is there anything special that must be done when changing the brake fluid?
Various brake disc coatings are being developed and tested with appropriate friction materials to prevent corrosion. Hard metal coatings are among those being tested. ‘Low steel’ friction linings are also used frequently nowadays. Drum brakes are also suitable for solving the corrosion issue, and they are already being tested on front axles.
How do e-car friction linings differ from conventional ones?
As the importance of eletric vehicles is increasing, the right spare parts and services are needed. ATE is the well-known premium brand by Continental that offers the brake technology and products in car manufacturer quality.

What is the situation regarding brake pad replacement?
Brake Service for electrified cars
In an e-car, brake wear is lower overall than in a combustion engine due to recuperative braking. However, part of the increase in service life is offset by the vehicle’s mass – the reason for this is the battery – and the associated higher weight. This effect is even more pronounced in hybrid vehicles, which must cope with two drives simultaneously. For the workshop business, service work on brakes will also be carried out on e-vehicles, including changing the brake fluid. Other work must also be carried out due to the changing damage pattern, such as replacing corroded brake discs, which are used much less frequently due to recuperative braking, and the removal of wear debris from drum brakes. Drum brakes are increasingly being used again in e-vehicles. However, the exact maintenance and repair intervals are not yet foreseeable since this technology is constantly and rapidly developing.
In the case of disc brakes, pad replacement is still on the agenda, but nowadays, the pads are replaced for different reasons than in the past – not due to wear, but to increased corrosion. ‘Film rust’ occurs because the brake is used much less frequently in electric vehicles thanks to recuperative braking, and this is why more and more manufacturers are installing drum brakes. Encapsulated systems make these brakes less susceptible to rust, usually resulting in significantly longer maintenance intervals – because the mechanisms and the braking surfaces are well protected from corrosive agents such as rain and salt.
Yes – workshops must note some special points regarding brake fluid changes on e-vehicles. These include purchasing brake fluid suitable for e-vehicles, such as the Continental ATE Super DOT 5.1. It’s a unique liquid with low viscosity and a high wet boiling point.

is a venture capital firm which interacts daily with both ‘start-ups’ and compa nies within the automotive and transportation industries looking for innovation. It is in the unique position of being able to unlock and identify best
focuses on external innovation and hig hlights a number of areas that company executives need to take into account in terms of the motiva tion and pitfalls of harnessing external innovation. We tend to perceive companies that are more inno vative as being more dynamic, competitive and growth orientated. A study completed by HP found innovation correlated with a rise in worker satisfac tion and motivation. Such workers feel pride in their company’s brand, and gladly associate themselves with positive company public relations activity.
HARNESSING EARLY-STAGE INNOVATION

Almost all organizations worldwide are, or would like to be, involved in some kind of innovation. Over the past few decades, the ability to innovate internally - or har ness external innovation - is seen as a positive indication of growth.
IDAN PartnerKATZ&Chief Technology Officer, Mobilion
Internal innovation usually focuses on growing and adopting ideas from within the organization. External innovation is associated with “open inno vation”, indicating that the business is open to receiving external ideas, products and technolo gies. External innovation is also associated with the creation of partnerships, POCs, joint development, investments and M&A (Mergers and Acquisitions) Thisactivity.article
A practical example of a business benefiting from start-up interaction is the rental company Sixt. Sixt was contacted by Click-Ins (a Mobilion Portfolio company), a ‘startup’ technology business that facilitates a high-accuracy visual inspection of car body parts. During the interaction, Click-Ins lear ned more about the actual use of Sixt’s technology and their needs, whilst Sixt created a fully automa ted process enabling efficient flow and reduction of legal Mobiliondisputes.Ventures
In the early stage of a ‘start-up’ business, its offering is usually associated with a future timeline of two or more years. ‘Start-ups’ executing such a plan will, unfortunately, have embedded unknowns which are far from straightforward. Startups’ plans need to be updated to meet reality (both in the market and internally). In comparison, when a company is executing a plan, there needs to be an enabling infrastructure encompassing execution, tracking and reporting. So, these basic differences generate gaps within a joint workplan. In order to fill in these gaps, mana gers and workers from the company are required to allocate more resources and fill them in.
Although harnessing innovation may sound straightforward, in some cases a serious problem can lead into a roadblock. Due to its nature, innova tion correlates to a desire for change – to make an impact, and do things better and more efficiently. These characteristics also reside in the approach of company managers and research & development teams. That is why it is natural for managers to adopt and try out limited frameworks of innova tion, without a company framework or policy. A good example of this occurred when I worked with an organization that was publicly listed on NAS TheDAQ.technical teams found strong synergies which triggered the rationale for a joint business case. The company managers confirmed its validity by verifying the financials, the timeline and associated tasks. However, when it was brought to the atten tion of the senior management team, approval was denied because there was no pre-allocated budget nor allocated resources for execution. It was very obvious that the proposal came as a surprise to the senior management, but they could not embrace it due to the lack of planning.

Lack of senior management commitment
Wrong assessment of internal effort
After a company has spotted an interesting ‘start-up’ and identified an area of potential deve lopment, it is only logical to assume that what fol lows is a simple matter of timing and execution. However, innovation experts and investors know that this is the point at which the actual work starts. Even after investment and alignment of interests, a start-up is likely to be short of resources. There fore, when working with both start-ups and com panies, Mobilion introduces some flexibility into the planning through a ‘hands-on’ approach. This expectation works both ways. ‘Start-ups’ have to believe that once they successfully execute a POC,
When it comes to interaction with external inno vation, managers tend to underestimate the effort that is required to achieve success. The main and immediate focus is on due diligence and deciding whether it is a worthwhile opportunity. The reality of this is much more complex.
SIDE INSIDE EDITION 29 • SEPTEMBER 2022 52
Unrealistic expectations
practices and ways to harness innovation from a VC’s point of view. Adopting external innovation is not a trivial or sim ple task; and companies that are highly motivated and looking to harness innovation, should not rush into it and face the possibility of failing. Yet, over time, there are many lessons to be learned and several pitfalls to be avoided and mitigated against, in order to improve the success of the process.
for example, the company will proceed to either purchase, license or invest in the start-up. This may contrast with the company’s actual commitment. Establishing a realistic commitment from both sides at the outset is important and for the need to cooperate in their mutual interest. This approach requires experience and ‘start-up’ guiding and Whenmentoring.interacting
with external innovation there is a big difference between early-stage and later-stage companies. Unlike an M&A action in later-stage investments, investing in early-stage companies is very different. The basic difference is derived from the understanding that a ‘start-up’ is not a “small company”. A ‘start-up’ is an organization seeking to find its viable business case, whilst company is an organization executing on its business case, pro viding value to its customers in order to generate a profit. As a result, early-stage companies often lack working capital, human resources, product matu rity, and other resources. This makes investments and interactions difficult and risky. So, unlike a later-stage investment in which the investing company has a lot of internal knowledge of the market it is performing in, it is premature to expect a good financial performance from early-stage ‘start-ups’ as the product may not have a firm market fit.
Starting from the pre-investment process and sear ching for validity in the product offering, together with post-investment and hands-on involvement, makes a world of a difference in delivering execu tion and bridging information. In conclusion, although the motivation and bene fits of harnessing early-stage innovation are high, there are some failure points which must be addressed. A good piece of advice to companiesprior to embarking on the innovation journey - is to utilize the “carpenters’ rule”- measure twice and cut once. If your company has had little interaction with innovation or scaling up its innovation inter face, don’t rush into it! Learn from your own expe rience. Double check your company’s plans before harnessing innovation. Start with professional and experienced guidance. Such professionals will sup port you in understanding the company’s motiva tion and enrich you with lessons learned and help drive the process forward. When selecting such experts for harnessing inno vation, take into account their familiarity with your market dynamics, previous deal flow and ‘hands-on’ experience with ‘start-ups.’ Innovation has a unique life cycle and you should consult with professionals who are familiar with the principles of innovation. Good consultants regularly interact with ‘start-ups’ either serving on their Board of Directors (BoD), or mastering actual positive business outcomes which may include exit, license or sale.
Mobilion Ventures is addressing these gaps. Being a group of experienced venture capitalists, with vast knowledge in the field of mobility and its trends, makes interactions with ‘start-ups’ highly efficient.

TPMSBLUETOOTHSENSORS FOR TESLA FROM HERTH+BUSS

Pre-programmed and ready to travel Tesla changed its wheel sensors as part of the facelift of Tesla Model 3 from late 2020. Instead of the 433 MHz TPMS sensors pre viously used in Europe, Tesla switched to TPMS sensors that communicate with the vehicle’s control electronics via Bluetooth 2.4 GHz. All Tesla 3 and Y models from No vember 2020 have these TPMS sensors with Bluetooth technology installed. Tesla is essentially using an active tyre pressure monitoring system. With an active TPMS, sensors are installed that permanent ly measure the pressure and temperature. All data is sent to the central control unit via Bluetooth. All data is permanently displayed in the cockpit.

NEW GENERATION OF OFBEARINGSSUSPENSIONANDECO-FRIENDLYRECYCLABLESTRUTMADEALUMINUM
Whilst other manufacturers use plastic to furnish lightweight, flexible parts, the world’s leading automotive manufactu rer NTN flips the script and has developed a suspension strut bearing with spring support made of aluminum: making it more rigid and easy to recycle.

ORIGINS OF AN AMBITIOUS PROJECT
Whilst the axle weight of motor vehicles is incre asing (especially electric vehicles with the weight of their batteries), recyclability constraints are con stantly being reinforced, notably with regard to plastics and elastomers. With these two challenges in mind, NTN decided to use aluminum for the part that serves as the interface between the bearing and the suspension spring of its new suspension strut bearing. This is because whilst plastic offers attractive design freedom and several advantages for parts subject to low loads, it soon reaches its mechanical limits for the heavy-duty application of the suspension strut bearing. That’s why NTN is dis THE
Bearing experts NTN has a 38% share of the OE market in Europe when combining all brands. Also present on the aftermarket, the automotive sup plier has set itself the objective of creating a more axially compact bearing with a spring support that is more tolerant of spring manufacturing variance.

A MARKET-READY INNOVATION
tancing itself from the reflexive use of plastic that requires reinforcement, and is turning instead to aluminum, which provides much better daily and long-term performance, whilst increasing the recy clability value of the part.
Conceptual work on this bearing project yielded an original design that saves money while fulfilling all its promises.
• More robust and rigid than parts made of plastic, aluminum enables this new bearing to be less sen sitive to variations in spring production. Unlike its plastic counterparts, there is no risk of deformation and eventual contact with the cover, causing noise and loss of function.
This aluminum strut bearing was developed for heavy vehicles (categories C and D, utility vehicles), hybrids and electric vehicles, whose battery is hea vier than a gasoline or diesel engine. The higher force on the bearing increases the risk of deforma tion of the support, so it requires a more compact strut bearing. Intended for original equipment, this innovation also applies to the aftermarket, where it could appear very soon, thanks to an R&D team dedicated exclusively to the aftermarket. The suspension strut bearing with aluminum sup port has now achieved sufficient technical maturity and customer interest to consider transitioning to the development phase in the very near future.
BENEFITS OF AN ALUMINUM SUSPENSION STRUT BEARING
• Thanks to a weight saving of 80g – representing 13% of the total weight of a reference strut bea ring with plastic support - NTN’s aluminum bearing helps to indirectly address the increasingly strict CO2 emissions regulations imposed on automakers.
• And finally, the use of aluminum makes it easier to recycle this bearing, thereby offering a sub stantive response to current trends and European standards that stipulate a high rate of component recyclability. Whereas the incineration of traditional suspension strut bearings made of nylon 66 (rein forced with glass fibers and metal inserts) is parti cularly polluting and allows for very little material recovery, aluminum recycles very well. Benefiting likewise from a short distribution chain, the alumi num recycling circuit (recycling, injection, recovery, recycling and reinjection) can remain entirely within national boundaries.

Cool runnings: new multi V-belts for commercial vehicles

With temperatures pushing 40°, baking hot asphalt and tropi cal conditions inside cabs, the heat of summer certainly gives truck drivers and their vehicles plenty to think about. Which makes it all the more important that the cooling systems for major components and the air conditioning for the cabs keep working without a hitch. To this end, workshops and service outlets can now rely on quality from Continental for even more models. “We’ve expand ed our range of multi V-belts for commercial vehicles once again with the addition of some 30 types,” reports Maximilian Pape, Product Manager EMEA at Power Transmission Group.
Retailers, commercial vehicle workshops and haulage firms running their own workshops can now call on over 250 multi V-belt variants from Continental in all, including types for trucks and buses from Mercedes-Benz, MAN, DAF, Iveco, Volvo and Scania. This allows the vast majority of repair requirements on vehicles from the major manufacturers in the European market to be covered reliably.
www.continental-engineparts.com
In many models, these belts power components in the accessory drive, such as the water pump and fan. They there fore play a critical role in ensuring reliable engine cooling in extreme conditions. However, in some vehicles, such as Volvo 8700, 9700, 9900 models and in trucks from MAN TGA and SCANIA, they also drive the air-conditioning compressor – and therefore enhance comfort and safety levels for the driver.

Protecting the climate is becoming a priority for everyone in an effort to provide a sustainable and healthy planet for future generations. Establishing and implementing new regulations to combat the threats posed by climate change has become a critical initiative for many countries. As such, the European Commission has set challenging targets for the transportation market, one of them being from 2035 onwards, sales of fossil fuel-powered vehicles will no longer be permitted.
This action has made it more important than ever to lower carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and the environmental impact of today’s vehicles, whilst developing new technologies that support a more sustainable future and preserve mobility. From hybrid electric vehicles (EVs) to battery EVs and fuel-cell EVs, new alternatives are entering the marketplace to meet important environmental milestones.
Focusing on reduced friction SKF is always searching for the best way to sup port customer needs, especially when it comes to improving sustainability. One way we are accom plishing this is by placing a strong focus on friction and power density in the design and manufactu ring of our advanced hub bearing units. By crea ting less friction in the rotation of our bearings, less energy is required to propel a vehicle. Power density refers to how quickly energy can be delive red to accomplish its intended function, not to be confused with energy density, which is how much energy can be stored by a battery. Power density optimizes the energy that is available. For Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), this has a direct and posi tive impact, by extending travel range between charges, a very valuable feature for vehicle owners. Innovating by combining the best features of two technologies Originally produced for an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), our SKF X-Tracker hub bearing unit is one example of SKF technology that reduces friction and supports power density by design. With nearly 1 million units sold in the automotive aftermarket since 2013 and conside red a ‘first of its kind’ component to enter in the vehicle aftermarket, the SKF X-Tracker ball-taper design is playing an important role among soluti ons to help vehicles make less of an environmen tal impact and increase efficiency. It is considered by many to be THE solution for EV OEMs to help meet their target goals for improved range and energy efficiency. The design of the SKF X-Tracker hub bearing unit combines the concepts of two asymmetric rolling rows of ball bearings (widely in use for ball-to-ball wheel bearings) to optimize the power density of the unit and adds the reduced friction advantage delivered by a ball bearing hub. This contrasts with the taper-to-taper setup found in traditional bea ring units that have two rows of taper.
Helping [Electric] Vehicles Go Further in the Effort to Fight Climate Change
SKF X-TRACKER BALL-TAPER HUB BEARING UNIT
In addition, the SKF X-Tracker ball-taper hub bea ring unit offers other advantages for light-duty trucks and SUVs:
• Enables truck/SUV to handle more like a car
This solution leverages reduced friction and incre ased stiffness for significantly improved perfor mance of the ball elements, as well as the increased carrying capacity provided by the taper design fea ture. This efficient unit is becoming increasingly popular in the market due to its advantages. Reduced friction advantages that extend to the environment With the growth of EVs comes the need to incre ase their range. SKF is seeing increased interest in the X-Tracker hub bearing unit from OEMs and the desire for developing technologies that can extend battery miles. The challenge to increase battery miles isn’t limi ted to automobiles. Perhaps it is even more critical to find more energy efficient solutions designed for light-duty trucks and Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs), as more and more companies are chan ging to electric fleets. Traditionally, these vehicles utilize taper-taper bearing units for durability and to support heavier loads. In response to growing demand, SKF offers a hub bearing unit specifically engineered for the lightduty truck and SUV market: the SKF X-Tracker ball-taper hub bearing unit. The design of this unit replaces one taper row with a ball row, providing a dramatic reduction in friction, a key prerequisite for EV OEMs. The SKF X-Tracker ball-taper hub bearing unit sha res the trusted technology behind the SKF X-Trac ker hub bearing unit, combining the strengths of ball and tapered roller hub units. This design is also extremely beneficial for light-duty trucks and SUVs, as well as heavier vehicles designed to carry heavier loads, that are frequently called upon to travel many service miles on a daily basis.
• Improved steering accuracy and vehicle dynamic behavior
For a major OEM application, SKF has been able to cut bearing friction by 30%. This translates into an extended range of 4 miles per battery cycle.

Withbenefit.the success of the SKF X-Tracker ball-taper hub bearing unit in the OEM application mentio ned, and additional benefits being reported, SKF is currently in discussions to extend this product to other OEMs and platforms.

For owners of light-duty trucks and SUVs aiming to do their part in the effort to curtail climate change, the SKF X-Tracker ball-taper hub bearing unit is technology available today that clearly provides benefits for the future.
• Asymmetrical design provides increased stiffness
• Reduced deflection of hub face provides better braking and handling

• Improved brake wear and resulting noise/vibra tion/harness (NVH) due to truer running of the rotor
For vehicles in constant use, as well as fleets, this extended range can quickly add up to a substantial

For longer distances, the options availa ble were driving, taking a train, or perhaps a bus, or flying. Nowadays, there are even more options available for moving from point a to b, including using a scooter, an e-bicycle, or even a motorbike that can be rented by the minute. Then, there is the option of calling an Uber or a Bolt here in Europe, a Lyft in the United States, a Cabify or BEAT in Latin America, and so on. Carpooling using Uberpool or Blablacar is an option, but so too is renting a car, a van, or even a truck by the minute. As we have seen, mobility is no longer a hardware option that people purchase, but a service which people can use without having full ownership.

For the same volume of lubricant, the whole weight is 348 gr lighter when compared to a traditional 20L can. The cube itself has been designed to allow full (>99%) utilization of product inside, supporting a zero-waste concept in the workshop. After use, the box and the bag are disassembled and stored flat, so that waste takes up less space and dispo sal is simplified. As Quartz Box can be comple tely flattened, the waste storage volume needed is significantly reduced compared to traditional rigid plastic 20-L cans, and it saves on waste dis posal thanks to a reduction in plastic volume.

The Difference is in the Name Dual wet clutches are termed “wet” because of a constant oil supply that keeps the moving parts lubricated, and as a result, cool. Wet clutches are also fitted on a multi-plate design that compensates for the lack of friction, which results from the use of lubricants. Dual wet clutches improve driving comfort by eliminating torque Dualinterruption.dryclutches, unlike wet clutches, have no problem producing friction. They are simpler in nature and use a single plate design, which doesn’t need a pump to provide liquid coolants.
