Vern and Brian are shining examples of what it means to give back to one’s community. With diverse backgrounds and impressive careers, both men have shifted their focus to volunteering, making a lasting impact through their selfless dedication Vern, born in Northern New Brunswick and fluent in both French and English, built a successful career in the electronics industry. Beginning as an inside sales representative in Montreal, he quickly advanced to National Sales Manager for a major electronics supplier. He moved to Ontario and in 1988, Vern took a bold step and founded Alutron Modules Inc., a manufacturer of electronic controls, and a company committed to providing employment opportunities for individuals with special needs. His dedication to inclusivity and innovation earned him the 2001 Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year award and 2007 Business Person of the Year award.
Since retiring, Vern has remained deeply involved in the community. He serves on the boards of several organizations, including the Aurora Whisky Society, the Probus Club of Aurora (where he is a past president), and the Aurora Seniors Association. He also contributes to the Optimist Club of Aurora, the Aurora Economic Development Committee, and serves as Chairperson for the Aurora Seniors Fundraising Committee. Vern's involvement doesn’t stop there—he volunteers for the Welcome Table, is a member of the Oddfellows, Aurora Lodge, and was previously a youth mentor for the Summer Company initiative administered by York Region. His dedication to community service makes him an invaluable resource to Aurora and beyond. Brian has similarly devoted himself to service. Over the past 15 years, he has actively contributed to the Southlake Hospital Foundation, working on their Run for Southlake committee and volunteering at key events such as the Hospital Gala, MR Menswear Fashion Show, and the NewRoads LakeRide. He takes pride in volunteering alongside the exceptional staff at Southlake. As a long-standing member of the Aurora Optimist Club, the Probus Club of Aurora, and Aurora Whisky Society, Brian’s contributions have been a cornerstone of these organizations. He currently serves as Noble Grand of the Independent Order of Oddfellows, Aurora Lodge 148 and leads the EDGE Property Committee for the Aurora United Church, guiding the reconstruction of their home after a devastating fire.
Brian’s extensive contributions don’t stop there. He’s held numerous leadership roles, including as a director and president of the Aurora Chamber of Commerce, and he’s contributed to the Town of Aurora’s Sesquicentennial Celebration Committee, the Power Stream Customer Advisory Committee, and more. His commitment to youth mentorship is seen through his work with the Third Aurora Cub Pack, the Aurora Minor Ball Association, and Humber Seneca Scouting. His tireless volunteerism has earned him prestigious awards, including the Aurora Chamber of Commerce Businessperson of the Year in 2008, Citizen of the Year in 2012, and the Governor General of Canada’s Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers in 2019. Most recently, in 2022, he was honored with the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario’s Good Citizenship Award. Together, Vern and Brian construct the Wind Phones for Oasis Bereavement, an initiative supporting those in York Region. Their commitment to serving others is a powerful testament to their belief in giving back—not for recognition, but for the joy of helping their community. Their long-standing dedication continues to inspire others, proving that true fulfillment comes from making a positive difference. #GoodNeighbours

A look back at
The Royal Hotel at the top of the Main St. hill was constructed in 1852 by Dr. Orin Ford. Dr. Ford was a homeopathic doctor or an “eclectic physician” who constructed a large new brick hotel which was named the “Royal Hotel”. It was a two-storey brick hotel with a pitch roof where he opened a sanitarium (home for the sick).
Dr. Ford resided in the hotel and his daughter acted as operator. Here the Doctor practiced his homeopathy. This was an alternative form of medicine popularized in the 19th century, based on the principle that the method of treating disease by drugs, given in minute doses, would produce in a healthy person symptoms similar to those of the disease (Homeopathic practices were not legal in the province until 1859).
The hotel served as a depot for horse-drawn livery carriages, which would meet the trains on the north end of town. In 1853 the Newmarket Telegraph O ce moved to the front o ce of the new hotel and around 1886 a large new brick building was constructed to the north. It became known as the “New Royal Hotel”.
In the later 19th century, however, the hotel was converted to the “public house” of the nineteenth century – a hotel offering rooms and liquor to the public. As mentioned, by the later end of the century, Main St. was dotted with such establishments and they enjoyed much success. With the onset of prohibition 1910-1911 the hotel, formerly a flourishing drinking establishment, now faced bankruptcy. Current proprietor, A.W. Evans, applied to the town to approve conversion of the hotel to a hospital and it served such purpose during World War I. Following this, the hotel reopened like others on Main St. as a temperance hotel. (The photo above was taken in 1912.)
Not too long after the original brick building was heightened to three stories, the pitch roof being replaced with a flat roof, as it is today. For a time the hotel also served as the o ces for the O ce Specialty Mfg. Co., whose factories were located east of Main St. on the Holland River “flats”.
Today the hotel contains both residence apartments and commercial businesses and is one of the earliest surviving structures on the St. Early this century, it has underwent many renovations giving the building a much-needed face lift including the stuccoing of the old brick walls. Today the building is used for both residential and commercial uses, including Main Street Realty Ltd.
Splash of Culture was another breathtaking evening of musical performances by very talented artists in a unique setting! The Town of Newmarket transformed the Mercedes-Benz Newmarket Skating and Water Feature into a beautifully lit stage, complete with a baby grand piano. This memorable event included musical performances by the Blackburn Brothers and Joyride. Thank you Town of Newmarket for ending this year's concert series with a SPLASH!

Wishing everyone in Newmarket—Aurora a hearty Thanksgiving weekend lled with warmth and gratitude.
Let us be grateful for the blessings this year has brought us and the strength we nd in one another as we Build Our Community Together.

As the warmth of summer transitions into the cozier feel of fall, it gives us time to reflect on the past few months. I’d like to thank everyone that came out to our 3rd Annual Community BBQ at Riverwalk Commons on September 29th. Good music was playing as Spiderman thrilled the kids and the face painter and balloon artist worked their magic. The Premier loves a good BBQ because it’s important to come together and meet our neighbours and celebrate Newmarket—Aurora, this beautiful area of Ontario where we make our home and raise our families.
This summer I made an extra effort to walk through many of our neighbourhoods, knocking on doors and talking with everyone I met. The top three things I heard from you were about community safety, the cost of living and the need for critical infrastructure to support our growing communities. Whether I’m out in our community or down at Queen’s Park, I take your concerns seriously and please know that I am working hard to maintain and improve our lives every day.
I will be taking part in the Run for Newmarket on Sunday, October 13th so please come out and support such a great event. It’s also a very special weekend as we gather with loved ones, and I want to extend my warmest wishes to each of you. From my family to yours, have a safe, joyful, and Happy Thanksgiving.

End of the Roll Newmarket & Barrie store owners Parm & Harry hosted a golf tournament on September 17th, at Silver Lakes Golf & Country Club, in support of the Trilogy Foundation. The Trilogy Foundation was established in 2018 to support families and communities affected by tragedy, disaster and poverty. The founding corporations (End Of The Roll & Floors Now) along with their Trilogy Partners serve hundreds of communities nationwide. Their mission is to give back to the local communities and work with various charitable organizations across the country to recognize the need while assisting in the restoration and working towards reviving those impacted. The Trilogy Foundation believes that together we can make a difference!
We are excited to announce our end-of-season blowout sale. This is a special opportunity to take advantage of incredible offers while supporting a worthy cause.
As a dedicated member of our community, we are incorporating a charitable donation into our Blowout Sale. This year, we have chosen The Aurora Food Pantry as our charity of choice. We are deeply grateful for the comforts our family enjoys, and we recognize that many in our community are struggling to make ends meet.
About The Aurora Food Pantry
The Aurora Food Pantry, serving Aurora and Oak Ridges since 1990, provides essential food assistance to those in need. Currently, they support around 400 families monthly, equating to 1,198 to 1,240 individuals, a significant increase from 2019 when they serviced 180 to 240 families per month. The growing demand reflects rising living costs and insu cient support for minimum wage earners, social assistance recipients, and seniors on fixed incomes. If these challenges persist, the need for their services is expected to rise further.
We aim to donate $20,000 to The Aurora Food Pantry by December 31st, 2024. To achieve this, 5% of our construction revenue from September 9th to December 31st, 2024, will go directly to the pantry. Here's how it works:
Receive Free Upgrades: Enjoy added value with our special offers.
Defer a Portion of the Project: Opt to defer 25% of your project for nine months interest-free.
Support a Worthy Cause: 5% of the revenue from your project will support The Aurora Food Pantry, making an immediate impact on the community. Hire a Well-Reviewed Contractor: Choose Green Side Up Contracting for your project.
Past Contributions
Our last significant charitable donation was in January 2022, when we donated $7,000 to Welcoming Arms. We are committed to making a difference and appreciate your support in this effort.

We all know the expression, "It takes a village to raise a child." At Rose of Sharon, we see this in action every day as we help pregnant and parenting young mothers in need. But when it comes to running a non-profit, a more fitting phrase might be, "It takes the community to support a local charity so the local charity can support the community."
Everything we do—from providing onsite high school and parenting workshops to offering food, diapers, and prenatal education—is made possible by the generosity of local donors. Fundraising events rely on community members who give their time, donate prizes, and attend events to help us raise critical funds. When everyone helps a little, it adds up to a lot!
We’ve got two great fundraisers coming up: Charity Bingo Nights at Market Brewing Co. on Thursday evenings in October, just $25 to play for the night with a chance to win some big cash prizes. "My mom and dad say that I'm SO stinkin' cute!
Happy Halloween, friends." - Stoli
Hi, I'm Badger! In my golden years, I cherish my quiet time, but still enjoy going for lots of walks. I'm the perfect companion for someone who appreciates a mix of relaxation and outdoor activity! I'm not a fan of young dog energy and would thrive as the only dog in an adult-only home. I need time to warm up to new people and can guard my space at first. Once I'm comfortable, I am a true sweetheart! I have a history of seizures and am on medication to help prevent them.

I'm Moxie! A sweet and spunky 3-year-old spayed Goldendoodle with a heart full of love. I came to Dog Tales after my previous family became overwhelmed by my medical needs. Unfortunately, I have a neurological disorder, which is currently under investigation with the help of a fantastic neurologist. Despite the challenges I face, my zest for life is undeniable. I adore going for walks and enjoy the company of everyone I meet! Due to my condition, I need some assistance with walking and can only manage short distances on my own. But I love cruising around in my stroller, getting pets, and exploring the world at my own pace.
Oink! I'm Sally Ann. I came to Sweet Acres Pig Sanctuary in October 2023, when I was surrendered by my family. My birthday is this month and I will be celebrating turning 5 on October 9th! I'm a beautiful and gentle girl that loves belly rubs. Please consider sponsoring me, helping myself and my pig family maintain a healthy diet, providing those of us who need it with proper medical treatments, and helping us live our fullest lives! Hi there! I'm Titan, a 4 year old Havanese mix. I love to chase chipmunks and squirrels, and of course my treats; I believe that if I sit by the cupboard long enough, someone (usually mom) will inevitably give me one. I refuse to eat kibble from a bowl, it has to be on the floor. I think I am the gatekeeper of our street (the Neighbour’s actually call me that), I am the biggest, little dog protector to all my people and I think that I am the toughest dog on the planet. I also love my twin brother/sister Jack and Brooklyn who are Himalayan cats, we are best friends!
George is my name and bringing sunshine is my game. I love people, dogs and liver treats. At 105 lbs, I think I make a good lap dog... especially during the winter months. I crave affection and get lots of it from all my human friends. As the mascot of the Aurora Whisky Society, I get to meet a lot of new and old friends. Unfortunately at 8 years old, I’m too young to drink but I love the smell of cigars when my friends come visiting. I'm looking forward to winter!
Hey guys! I'm Dolly. I am a 7 month old Papillon and I came to my forever home when I was a little baby. I am very passionate with humans and dogs, and I am obsessed with playing with my toys. I also love to figure out the things all around me. Although I don’t have any other dogs at home to play with me, my parents love to hug me and kiss me. I do my best to show all of my family and friends that I am a smart and loving dog!
Young people are not only the leaders of tomorrow but have opportunities to provide leadership skills today. That is why the Prime Minister and our government have prioritized creating more opportunities to empower youth in communities across Canada. Youth councils offer the chance for young leaders to have their voice heard and see their impact reflected in all levels of government. Each year, a new council is formed, new goals are established, and incredible events, discussions, and fun follows.
Are you
• a resident of Newmarket-Aurora?
• aged 15-25?
• interested in politics?
If you said yes to all three, then I encourage you to apply for the 2024-25 Newmarket-Aurora Youth Council (NAYC). The Council advises and provides youth perspectives on federal priorities. The Council meets monthly to provide insight on issues important to them, learn more about Parliament and what an MP does, and to meet other young leaders from across the community as well as the occasional meeting with a government o cial.
The 8th annual Newmarket International Festival of One Act Plays returned to the Old Town Hall from September 5th - 8th. The festival featured a number of one act plays – and this year received an overwhelming number of entries from all over the world. The 2024 edition featured 7 plays in the main draw and 3 in The V.U.T.C. Young Compny's entry. Those that attended the opening night also gained entry to the pre-show Red Carpet Party featuring charcuterie & finger foods by A Million Mouthfuls and live entertainment by Love & Light Muses.
Over the past year, I've been pleased to meet with my Youth Council to visit long-term care facilities, write Valentine's cards for Veterans in our community, create a 2024 Pre-Budget submission, and advocate for a National School Food Program.
The NAYC is non-partisan and all youth from Newmarket-Aurora are welcome. Applications are due on October 20th, 2024, at 11:59 EST.

Hello Neighbours,
As we move into fall, I’d like to share some reflections on the national holidays we observe during this season. These holidays remind us of the values we hold dear as Canadians.
On September 30th, we observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day was established in response to Call to Action 80 from the 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) report, which called for a national holiday to reflect on the painful legacy of residential schools. It’s a day for all of us to acknowledge the deep harm caused to Indigenous communities and commit to healing and reconciliation. It’s vital that we continue to learn from the past and take meaningful steps to address these wrongs.
Thanksgiving, which falls on October 14th, is another important holiday. It’s a time to gather with friends, family, and our community to celebrate the abundance we enjoy and give thanks for our blessings. While Canada is a prosperous country, many among us still face challenges. As we give thanks for all we have, we can also reflect on things we can do to help ease the struggles of others. Taking action to support Canadians, particularly those experiencing need, is one of the important foundations of the work of government.
Programs like the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) are helping families across the country by providing a tax-free monthly payment, easing financial burdens for those raising children. I am also proud of the new Canada Dental Benefit, which is assisting low- and middle-income families, seniors, and those with disabilities who do not have private coverage. This program will expand further in 2025 to help more Canadians access the dental care they need.
These programs, along with our universal health care, early learning and childcare plans, and the Canada Pension Plan, make a real difference in people’s lives. They reflect our government's commitment to creating a more compassionate and fair Canada. I am proud to be part of a government that believes everyone deserves to meet their basic needs and live with dignity.
To stay updated on government supports and benefits, please refer to the attached poster or follow me on social media for the latest information.
Northridge Community Church of The Salvation Army hosted their second annual charity gala on September 19th, to raise funds for the mental health services that they offer. The event included live music, a live auction, delicious food, great company, and inspiring speeches from Mental Health advocates. If you missed it, be sure to keep an eye out for next year's event!

1.Keep your dog on a leash while walking in public to protect your pup and keep everyone safe. This is important even if you have a friendly pooch! Walking on trails? We suggest a short 6-foot leash to deter any coyote interaction.
2.Vaccinate pets against rabies. Keep rabies vaccinations current for dogs and cats to protect them, and prevent any spread to people. Contact your vet if a pet comes into contact with any wild animal, including bats.
3.License your pets with your municipality. This will help your pet get home to you faster if they are lost or found injured.
Keep these tips in mind so everyone can have a Spook-tacular Halloween when trick-or-treating.
Tips for motorists:
• Drive with caution and slow down when driving on Halloween.
• Pay attention for children who may cross the road without looking.
Tips for trick-or-treating:
• Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk with a group or a trusted adult and organize a meeting spot in case anyone gets lost.
• Use caution when crossing the street and remember to use designated crosswalks when possible.
• When going from house to house, don’t criss-cross back and forth across the street. Work your way up one side of the street.
• Wear costumes and clothing that are reflective or bright in colour or have reflective tape.
• Bring a flashlight. This will increase your visibility to those driving at night.
• Have an emergency plan. Review with children how to call 9-1-1 and what to do in case they become lost or need help when trick-or-treating.
October’s Zodiac signs are Libra (up to October 22) and Scorpio (from October 23 onward). Libras are associated with balance and harmony, while Scorpios are known or passion and intensity.

Mental Health Hub a huge step forward
The recently announced York Region Mental Health Community Care Hub is a huge win for Newmarket and York Region.
With the goal of making someone's first crisis their last, the Hub will offer youth, adults, and their families, immediate support from a range of healthcare professionals, including nurses, psychiatrists, social workers, and peer support specialists.
The Canadian Mental Health Association is leading the collaborative effort, along with the Ontario Ministry of Health, York Region, Police, Paramedics, the three hospitals in the Region, as well as community agencies like Loft, Kinark, Blue Hills, among others. Many of us have tweeted on Bell Let’s Talk Day or told a friend how desperately we need better mental health care support in our communities. The Hub is a significant way for us to move from talk to action. It is my hope that everyone will speak out loudly and support this critical piece of social infrastructure.
The COVID pandemic has pushed more and more people into crisis – many of them youth. With more people experiencing depression, anxiety, and having thoughts of suicide, the need for mental health care and support will continue to grow quickly. In fact, demand for mental health services is expected to increase 30 per cent by 2030.
The Hub is a new model, so questions are understandable. CMHA is eager to engage. As they get into the detailed planning, they will create a “good neighbourhood collaborative,” an ongoing forum for residents to provide their feedback and get their questions addressed.
The Hub offers hope for many who are suffering and their loved ones, who are often at their wits' end trying to get help. It’s comprehensive, it’s integrated, it’s something our community, every community, desperately needs.
On September 17th, Newmarket's Mayor John Taylor awarded the first "Mayor's Medal for Exceptional Community Service" to Duke Deger who has volunteered 7 days a week for almost two and a half years to run the Community Fridge by the Newmarket Library. Mayor Taylor said "Duke is one of the best examples I can think of to represent Exceptional Community Service. Duke has supported and helped hundreds of people who needed some support and a smile". Congratulations Duke and thank you for taking care of our community!

A new offering – the Property Pairing Program is currently in the development stages. This project aims to bridge the gab between property owners and tenants by fostering harmonious rental relationships; being your partner in property matchmaking; and ensuring the right fit for both sides.
Over five hundred residents have been supported to date. “It was hard for me as a senior to ask for help especially from someone from the younger generation. Dear friends,
As a new school year begins, I want to extend my best wishes to students, teachers, parents, and school staff across our province. September marks the return to classrooms, so embrace every opportunity to grow and challenge yourselves. Education is the cornerstone of a strong, vibrant society, and each of you plays an important role in shaping our future.
As we come together to celebrate Thanksgiving, I want to take a moment to reflect on the many things to be thankful for in our community. This is one of my absolute favourite holidays. Gathering with loved ones, enjoying festive food and entertainment, there is so much to be grateful for! Make sure to make the most of the Thanksgiving weekend by visiting the Pumpkinfest in Richmond Hill as well as the Woodbridge Fair.
This month, on September 30th, we recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to reflect on the painful history and lasting impacts of Residential Schools in Canada. This day is about remembering the Indigenous children who were taken from their families, and the painful legacy that still exists today. It is important that we do not just acknowledge this history, but also commit to listening and learning from Indigenous voices.
This day reminds us to thank those people who work hard to make our community one of the best places to thrive and prosper. I encourage you all to take some time to express your gratitude to the ones who have stood by you and supported you along your journey. Moreover, we should all take this opportunity to thank the men and women in uniform who serve selflessly for the freedoms we enjoy.
The Armoury celebrated its 150th anniversary on September 7th! Built in 1874 as a drill shed for the 12th Battalion of Infantry or York Rangers, the building is a recognized Federal Heritage Building. The Town purchased the Armoury from the federal government in 2014 with the intention of restoring the property and returning it to its role as a community gathering space. The Town opened the Armoury in 2019, and it has been a staple gathering place in the commuity since then!
We stand in solidarity with Survivors, their families, and their communities, acknowledging their unwavering commitment to preserving the culture and heritage of Indigenous peoples. Lasting reconciliation is not just about looking back; it is about moving forward together – in lockstep with Indigenous partners.
Let us also support those going through challenging times by providing a helping hand to ensure no one feels left out this Thanksgiving. In today’s fast paced environment, it is increasingly challenging to dedicate a certain amount of time every day to recognizing the things we are thankful for. I invite you all to acknowledge everything you value and to incorporate the Thanksgiving tradition of expressing gratitude in your daily lives. Happy Thanksgiving!
This year, Ontario marks the fourth observance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day by encouraging all Ontarians to learn about the ongoing legacy and impacts of the Indian Residential School system and support greater understanding of the importance of working to advance meaningful reconciliation.

Through her personal contributions, her offerings as a Board member and also through RBC with sponsorships, donations, volunteers and so much more, she remains a highly effective source of solutions and assistance that have helped Abuse Hurts greatly over the years.
Says Ms. Davis, “I support Abuse Hurts because I deeply believe in the organization's mission to provide assistance and healing for victims of abuse. I am passionate about advocating for survivors, ensuring they have access to the resources they need to rebuild their lives and regain their confidence. I find Abuse Hurts’ approach truly transformative. I love helping to bring awareness while also advocating for a society where every person has the chance to live free from the trauma of abuse.
Serving on the Board of Abuse Hurts allows me to contribute my skills and experience to an organization that is making a tangible difference in the lives of survivors. It is an opportunity to guide and shape its strategy while ensuring that the organization continues to grow and reach more individuals in need. Being part of the Board means I can have a direct impact on the policies and programs that help survivors, and I am proud to work alongside others who share the same passion for this cause. Together, we are creating a stronger foundation for future generations, where abuse is no longer tolerated, and survivors are supported at every step.”

Happy 100th birthday Jim Parks. Each time I meet up with Jim, one of Canada’s National Treasures, he shares with me the stories of a very young man who went to war. Once it was over a chocolate milk in his Mount Albert home. Once it was in France where he returned to the beaches of D-day 80 years later to remember his fallen comrades. Every time, he uses his voice to honour his fellow Veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
Today on his 100th birthday, I raise a glass of his favourite, chocolate milk, and, just like Jim does, lead a round of hip-hip-hooray for the troops! Happy Birthday Jim!

“Mary and Ron Gibson sat side by side in the newly opened Aurora Town Square. At 90, Mary marveled at how much had changed since her childhood in Aurora. The building that now housed the Cultural Centre had once been her school, where she first discovered the joy of art and community. Mary and Ron raised 4 boys in Aurora and are grateful for all the memories and look forward to experiencing the exciting events that will take place at Aurora Town Square. It was a full circle moment for Mary to be in the area that as a small child played in and now it would be filled again with community enjoying Town events.

Meet Cindy Barone, owner of Angelic Touch Boutique
When Cindy Barone was out of a job about a decade ago, she decided to change course. The Newmarket resident ultimately decided to become an entrepreneur. Cindy launched her first home-based business, a catering service called Angel Delight Cuisine, 10 years ago, then she launched a reiki service called Angelic Waves Healing, 4 years ago. Now she has opened the doors to her third business, Angelic Touch Boutique. Cindy credits her business success to her ability to connect with people. “I’m a people person. I care about people. I don’t worry about the money. I don’t worry about getting paid. I genuinely care,” she said. “That connection has helped me along the way.”
