NEIGHBOUR COVER STORY

Brian and Dianne Harrison

Happy Holidays, Neighbours!

As 2025 comes to a close, we’re reflecting on a year filled with incredible events, meaningful connections, and unforgettable memories. We’re so grateful to be part of such a vibrant and supportive community — thank you for making this year so special. Here’s to continuing the journey together in 2026!

As we all know, there is so much to celebrate during December:

Hanukkah starts at nightfall on December 14th, ending at nightfall on December 22nd; also known as the Festival of Lights, this Jewish festival commemorates the recovery of Jerusalem and subsequent rededication of the Second Temple at the beginning of the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE.

Winter Solstice occurs on December 21st at 10:03am! Also called the hibernal solstice, this is the day of the year with the least amount of daylight and the longest night. But good news, the days will only get longer from here on out (...until June 20th).

Christmas Day is December 25th; an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed primarily on this day as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world.

Kwanzaa is December 26th - January 1st; an annual celebration of African-American culture, which culminates in a communal feast called Karamu, usually on the sixth day. As always, New Year’s Eve will wrap up the year on December 31st! Also known as Old Year's Day or Saint Sylvester's Day in many countries. We wish you all health and happiness in 2026!

Each month the Neighbour Paper will make you smile! If you have something you’d like to share or would like help promoting, please email llanning@neighbourmedia.ca

Brian and Dianne Harrison’s journey together began in 1983, when a mutual friend introduced two single parents navigating life with resilience, hope, and an unwavering commitment to their children. At the time, Brian and Dianne were raising five children between them, each carrying the weight of responsibility while still believing in the possibility of new beginnings. As they grew closer, they learned to trust again, blending their lives with patience and intention. After a year of dating, their children met, marking the start of a new chapter—one defined by love, faith, grace, and deep respect. They married on July 17, 1986, building a bustling, joy-filled home in Aurora, Ontario, where friends were always welcome and the door was always open.

Over the years, the Harrisons’ family expanded to include five grown children and thirteen grandchildren, each raised with the belief that kindness has the power to shape the world. That conviction would eventually inspire one of the couple’s most meaningful contributions: R.E.D.—Remember Everyone Deployed.

This year marks 20 years since Brian and Dianne continued an initiative started by a colleague, Vhonda, whose son was stationed in Afghanistan. Concerned that some soldiers wouldn’t receive Christmas greetings from home, she began collecting cards to send overseas. After Vhonda’s sudden passing, Brian and Dianne felt compelled to carry on the heartfelt tradition.

What started as a few hundred cards has grown into a nationwide effort supported by friends, schools, community groups, and neighbours. Last year alone, 11,767 cards—filled with messages, handmade crafts, and crayon drawings—were sent to Canadian soldiers deployed around the world. The response has been profound: emails of gratitude from Turkey, Jerusalem, Iraq, and the Arctic; stories of soldiers moved to tears; and children thrilled to learn how much their artwork meant to those serving abroad.

One moment that stays with the Harrisons came during a visit to Canadian Forces Base Trenton. After delivering the boxes themselves, Brian and Dianne received a quiet, emotional thank-you from a soldier who remembered receiving a card the previous Christmas while deployed in Egypt. For Brian and Dianne, gestures like these a rm what they have always known: every act of kindness—no matter how small—can make a lasting difference. #GoodNeighbours

The 18th Battle of Yonge Street hit the ice on the weekend of October 25th–26th, and fans were fired up for this annual rivalry between the Newmarket Renegades and the Aurora Tigers. This classic showdown never disappoints, and this year the Renegades skated away with the series win! Another great chapter in one of the community’s favourite matchups!

Imagine if housing was on your holiday wish list.

For over 3000 individuals with diverse abilities in York Region, it is.

Feels Good to Give: Experience Rocky at Sherway Gardens and Upper Canada Mall

The best gifts create moments—small sparks that alter the rhythm of the day. The kind of gifts that feel just as good to give as they do to receive. Like a set of handcrafted bath bombs that offer an opportunity to unwind. Or, the simple indulgence of a hand wash that invigorates the senses.

At Rocky, every gift is a celebration of nature. Designed to reconnect us to the world around us—and to ourselves. Turning ordinary routines into moments of reflection that make us feel grounded, connected, and so, so alive.

For 25 years, Rocky (formerly Rocky Mountain Soap Co.) has been crafting products made with natural ingredients from their workshop in the Canadian Rockies. Rooted in their connection to the outdoors, owners Karina Birch and Cam Baty were inspired by the idea that everyday moments connect us to nature. What started with just two employees and a handful of formulas, has grown into a trusted Canadian brand offering more than 350 essentials for your face, body, and hair.

Now open at Upper Canada Mall and Sherway Gardens, Rocky’s newest locations are more than places to shop—they’re designed to bring nature indoors. Each store features natural materials and a central sink, where guests can try products, explore textures and aromas inspired by the Canadian wilderness, and hear the stories behind each formula from knowledgeable associates.

From the beginning, Rocky has followed nature’s lead—prioritizing purpose over trends and care over convenience. Today, they continue to turn daily routines into opportunities to connect with the natural world, helping you live Earth Every Day, wherever you are.

On October 29th, the Oh Yes We Can event took over Newmarket’s Old Town Hall. With 170 attendees and 30 vendors, the day was packed with inspiration, high energy, and countless aha moments. Event creator Tracy Smith, founder of Kitchen Table CEOs, once again curated a powerful, female-focused experience designed to inform, empower, and uplift.

Joy, Togetherness, and Warm Wishes for the Holidays!

As we embrace this festive season, let us honour the traditions, generosity, and community spirit that make Newmarket—Aurora truly shine. Wishing you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah, and a bright, joyful New Year!

DAWN GALLAGHER MURPHY

MPP for Newmarket–Aurora

Building Our Community Together

A MESSAGE FROM MPP DAWN GALLAGHER MURPHY

Celebrating the Season in Newmarket–Aurora

As we enter this magical time of year, I want to extend my warmest wishes to everyone across Newmarket–Aurora. The holiday season brings a special kind of joy—whether you are celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, or embracing the spirit of togetherness that this time of year inspires.

One of my favourite aspects of the season is seeing our community come alive with celebration. This year, I was thrilled to participate in two wonderful Santa Claus parades—first in Newmarket and then in Aurora. Both events were filled with music, lights, cheerful families, and the excitement of seeing Santa himself! These parades are a beautiful reminder of how strong and connected our community truly is, and I want to thank all the volunteers, organizers, and participants who worked so hard to make them unforgettable.

Across our riding, local holiday markets are in full swing, offering the perfect opportunity to find unique gifts while supporting local small businesses and artisans that make our community so vibrant. From handmade crafts and home-baked treats to artwork, candles, and local products, these markets showcase incredible talent. I encourage everyone to consider shopping local this season—not only do we find meaningful, unique gifts, we also uplift the entrepreneurs and family-run businesses who are at the heart of Newmarket–Aurora.

As we light the menorahs, decorate our trees, gather at festive tables, or enjoy quiet moments with those we love, this season offers a chance to reflect on what truly matters: faith, community, generosity, and connection.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Chag Sameach!

I wish each of you a joyful and peaceful holiday season. May your homes be filled with warmth, kindness, and love. I look forward to joining many of you at the various festive events and celebrations as we welcome a bright and promising year ahead for our community, and this great province.

The Ontario government is investing over $63 million in York Region to help connect people to emergency care faster and boost the number of paramedics and ambulances in the community. This includes a 7% increase in land ambulance funding — bringing Ontario’s total investment to $60.2 million this year — helping municipalities continue to deliver high-quality emergency care. An additional $2.78 million through the Dedicated O oad Nurses Program will hire more nurses and health professionals to reduce ambulance o oad delays, getting paramedics back on the road sooner. Since its launch, the program has helped cut provincial ambulance o oad times by about 65% since 2022.

Letter from MAYOR TAYLOR

Helping others is the best part of the season

Amongst all the hustle and bustle of December, it’s great to see people supporting one another in gestures grand and small, public and personal.

Holiday campaigns like the Sally Anne Kettle campaign, the Police Holiday Heroes Toy Drive, various food drives, community meals, parades, carol sings, and pageants that abound at this time of year showcase the compassion, generosity, and optimism of Newmarket residents.

While these campaigns and events attract attention, the spirit of the season moves people to reach out and pitch in in smaller, more personal ways too, which can be just as important. Any effort to include people or let them know you are thinking of them has an impact. Whether it’s the quintessential Christmas card, an invitation to a neighbourhood party or dinner, shoveling a nieghbour’s driveway, or even buying a coffee for the person behind you, these simple acts are great ways to share the spirit of the season. They can brighten someone’s day, give hope, and motivate those around you to have a positive impact on someone else – creating a chain reaction of positivity.

Back to the hustle and bustle: where we buy gifts is, of course, another way to support one another. Newmarket stores offer everything from this year’s must-have gifts to unique items for the hard-to-buy-for on your list. The restaurants, grocers, and caterers in Town can help make holiday get-togethers delicious and memorable. The dollars we spend at local businesses tend to stay in our local economy. Small business owners are also often supporters of local charities and community organizations that help people who live here. So, choosing to shop local has a lasting impact on the overall vibrancy of our town.

Thank you, Newmarket, for being such a generous, caring, and inclusive community.

I wish everyone a happy, healthy, and safe holiday season.

The Holly Jolly Lodge is back at Upper Canada Mall! Located in the Centre Court on the lower level by Dollarama from now until December 24th. Bring the family and experience the joy of the holidays with Santa himself.

A dedicated team of volunteers from Ramudden Global generously spent their time at Rose of Sharon, packing groceries for the 150 families supported by the organization each month. Since 1985, Rose of Sharon Services for Young Mothers has been committed to empowering pregnant and parenting youth aged 14–29, helping them recognize their strengths and build a stable future for themselves and their children. The organization offers both online and onsite programs in a warm, supportive environment. To learn more or to get involved, visit roseofsharon.com.

Freddie

Hi, I’m Freddie! I’m about 7 months old — a brindle Shepherd mix with big paws and an even bigger heart. I’m a happy, playful guy who loves zoomies, making dog friends and exploring the world… even if some things still spook me a little. I’m learning my name, “sit,” and how to be a good house dog. Walks are fun, and I try my best on leash! I’d love a fenced yard and a patient family who’ll help me keep learning and growing. Could that be you?

Hi, I’m Ts’eha — it means “Little Sister.” I’m about a year old, around 60 lbs, and a mix of love, loyalty, and a little mystery! I’m gentle and kind, great with dogs, cats, and even kids. I’m house-trained and free-roam like a pro. Sometimes loud voices or quick movements scare me, but once I trust you, I’m the best adventure buddy — ready to explore, camp, and cuddle close at night. I’ve had a rough start, but I’m learning the world can be soft and safe. Will you be

Spur

Meeooowww! My name is Spur. Two kind humans adopted me a couple of years ago - I came from a troubled home and hid under the couch for the first few weeks. One of my back legs doesn't work like the other one, but I don't let it stop me. And now that I'm the only cat in the house, my humans have my rules mostly figured out. I still have to remind them every day when it's time to be fed by nudging their feet in the right direction when they stand up, but I reward them with lots of snuggles and forehead kisses.

Kimi & Jack

We're Kimi and Jack. I’m a very pretty purebred tri-colour Pembroke Welsh Corgi. My younger brother from another mother is supposed to be one too but I’m not so sure. Jack drives me crazy in the morning because he always wants to play rough. Jack jumps on and off the bed and drives mommy nuts because she’s worried he will hurt himself. After we have our breakfast I insist to be lifted back on the bed for my morning beauty sleep, while Jack torments the cats by chasing them. We spend most of the day guarding the house and barking at the squirrels outside our bay window. Mom calls the window our “live big screen TV”.

Penne

Hi! My name’s Penne… like the pasta! I’m a 3-year-old Boxer–Shepherd–Cane Corso mix, and I’m full of love to give. My parents are my favorite humans in the whole world, and they even gave me two little human siblings to play with! I’ve already trained the 2-year-old to give me treatspuppy eyes and toddler eyes? Yeah, nobody can resist that combo. I love life! Whether I’m going for walks, playing with my dog friends, or cuddling up in bed with Mom and Dad, I’m always happy. And what do I love most of all? You guessed it… PASTA!

Lenny

Hi, I’m Lenny, a 9 year old Wheaten Terrier. I’m the boss of the house, every morning at 8am I make sure my parents take me for a long walk and I have to check out the neighbourhood to see what’s going on. I’m not always nice to small dogs because they bark at me. After my breakfast, which my dad specifically makes for me, because I happen to have a very sensitive stomach. I go outside and sleep in the backyard for a few hours - I love to be outside and it doesn’t matter if it’s snowing. I think I'm a pretty lucky dog!

OrangeTheory Newmarket–Aurora’s Annual OrangeCrush 5K was an absolute smash! Runners hit the course in full costume, bringing big energy and even bigger creativity. The fun kicked off with an adorable Kids’ Costume 1K, where the little ones stole the show before the main event. Each year, the OrangeTheory team chooses a charity to support, and this year’s run raised funds for Shades of Hope Wildlife Refuge. Thanks to the incredible participants, volunteers, and community spirit, the team CRUSHED their goal, raising $5,000! Way to go, OrangeTheory family!

“Thrill the World” is a global dance event where participants perform Michael Jackson’s Thriller at the exact same time worldwide. This year, seven groups represented Canada one of them right here in the Aurora–Oak Ridges–Richmond Hill community! Neighbour Media was thrilled to be invited to film and photograph this incredible moment, which took place on October 25th at 6pm. This amazing group of women truly brought the energy, the choreography, and the spirit of the event to life. To see more about this worldwide phenomenon, visit thrilltheworld.com

100 Kilometres of Gratitude: Lindsay Strom’s Journey Through Cambodia

I recently returned from an unforgettable trek through the jungles of Cambodia and with it a deep sense of gratitude, raising over $25,000 in support of Sandgate Women's Shelter and to help fund national programs about healthy relationships and domestic violence. I am so thankful to everyone in the community who supported my efforts with physical donations, time, event space, words of encouragement and love to help make a difference.

The five day, 100 kilometre trek was part of the national Royal LePage Shelter Foundation’s "Challenge for Shelter", held every 2 years in a new and di cult corner of the world.

The trek itself immensely challenged every participant. Traversing jungles, rice fields and steep mountain terrain, teams moved approximately 30,000 - 35,000 steps per day, guided by locals with machetes cutting paths through dense vegetation. It was hot, with 35 to 40 degree weather, 100% humidity and all different types of terrainevery step certainly reminded you why you were doing it. We were all uncomfortable, but sought comfort in knowing that it was nothing compared to the stories we heard of those fleeing in the night with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

It was incredibly humbling, but every blister, heat rash and challenge was worth it. The people of Cambodia are incredibly warm, kind and welcoming - it was heartwarming to see a community in action in another part of the world so interwoven and connected - so much of what we experience here in Aurora.

NOVEMBER'S PUZZLE ANSWERS

HOLIDAY GIVING NEIGHBOURHOOD Charity Highlight

The holiday season is a time to celebrate joy, connection, and the power of community—which also makes it the perfect moment to support those who need a little extra care. Whether it's donating to a local charity, volunteering your time, or uplifting a neighbour, every act of kindness helps brighten our community.

No gesture is too small. Your generosity can create meaningful impact, and ensure that everyone feels supported and included during this special time of year. Together, we can help make the season a little warmer, a little brighter, and a little kinder.

This year, we’d like to extend a heartfelt holiday spotlight to our 2025 not-for-profit Community Partners:

On November 10th, the Spectrum Health Care Foundation presented a $10,000 cheque to Rose of Sharon Services for Young Mothers. Over the years, the Foundation has made a meaningful difference in the lives of young mothers, supporting programs ranging from child development and parenting education workshops to personal counselling and food insecurity initiatives. Their ongoing commitment continues to positively impact every aspect of their services.

It was a boo-tifully spooktacular Halloween at Community Living Central York! The day was bubbling over with treats, costumes, and frightfully fun activities that brought out everyone’s Halloween spirit.

Letter from MAYOR

MRAKAS

Enjoy the holiday season the Aurora way!

December is here and you can feel that holiday spirit!

We’ve already kicked off the holiday season with our annual Santa Under the Stars parade and start of the Aurora Christmas Market, but the fun is just beginning.

Join us as we continue celebrating the annual Aurora Christmas Market at Aurora Town Square from December 5 to 7. Listed as one of the Top 100 Festivals and Events in Ontario, this indoor/outdoor event in our beautiful new square truly brings the magic of the season with hands-on workshops and activities, buskers, holiday movie screenings, fantastic seasonal vendors and so much more.

Then on December 14, we have the Menorah Lighting Ceremony, also at Aurora Town Square. This event is in partnership with Chabad Aurora. Everyone is welcome to attend alongside our local Jewish community to celebrate the Festival of Light. The ceremony will include the lighting of the menorah and traditional foods to enjoy. Happy Chanukah!

Lastly, I want to mention our Deck the Halls holiday tour. There is no better way to get into the festive spirit than a self-guided tour of some of Aurora's most spectacular lights! So, pack some hot chocolate and a holiday treat to enjoy along the way and follow our tour map as your guide throughout Town. Details are available at aurora.ca/DeckTheHalls.

And of course, throughout the month of December we have tons of drop-in festive programs for you and your family to enjoy, such as singing carols, baking holiday cookies, making festive crafts and writing letters to Santa. Everything you need to spread holiday cheer! Get more details and sign up at: aurora.ca/eplay.

Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas. And hope to see you around Town!

On November 14th, family, friends, and Town staff came together to celebrate the retirement of Betty DeBartolo, Executive Assistant to the O ce of the Mayor. For many years, Betty has been the heart of the Mayor’s O ce, a calm, steady, and deeply trusted presence. Her dedication, kindness, and professionalism have supported not only myself, but past Mayors, Council, Town staff, and the broader community. She leaves behind a legacy of warmth and unwavering commitment that will be truly missed.

Wishing You a Wonderful Holiday Season

From all of us at Carruthers Walker Financial, we’re sending you and your family our warmest holiday wishes!

Thanks for being part of our community this year — working with you is one of our favourite things.

The Aurora Farmers Market Kids & Pet Costume Parade is always one of the most adorable events of the year and this year was no exception! This special day also featured a fully accessible “No Tricks, Just Treats” celebration. The Town of Aurora and the Aurora Farmers Market partnered with the Treat Accessibly initiative, a wonderful grassroots movement dedicated to creating an inclusive and accessible Halloween experience for everyone, regardless of ability. It was truly a day of community, inclusion, and fun at the Aurora Farmers Market. Thank you to the Aurora Farmers Market for another fantastic season!

Here’s to recharging, celebrating with your favourite people, and stepping into the new year feeling energized and excited!

The Poppy Flag was proudly raised at Aurora Town Park on October 25th, marking the o cial launch of the 2025 Poppy Campaign. The campaign ran until November 11th, honouring all who have served and continue to serve our country. When you see the poppy boxes throughout our community each year, please donate generously and wear your poppy with pride. Let us remember the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of those who came before us—and those who continue to protect our freedoms today.

This holiday season is a time rich in meaning: magic visits our homes as presents appear under the tree, families gather for Christmas, Hanukkah lights brightly shine, and many celebrate family, cultural, or religious traditions that bring joy and warmth to our homes.

Pickering College proudly marked the o cial re-opening of the Eric Veale Memorial Arena on November 15th. The Eric Veale Memorial Arena has served the Pickering College community for more than half a century. Built in 1971 with the support of alumni while long-time teacher and acting Headmaster Eric Veale was at the helm, the facility has earned a reputation as “the best ice in Newmarket.” The renovation honours that legacy while introducing upgraded systems and renewed community access, ensuring the arena remains a centre of student life, athlete development and alumni engagement for generations to come. Aurora–Oak Ridges–Richmond Hill

A Message from Michael Pars a MPP for Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill

As the holiday season approaches, I want to wish everyone a warm and joyful time with family and friends. Whether you are celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, or simply enjoying some well-deserved rest, this time of year is a chance to reconnect and appreciate the people who make life meaningful.

It has been a busy year, and I know many are looking forward to taking a break, catching up with loved ones, sharing meals, or just spending quiet time at home. The holidays can also be a time when some in our community face challenges, so let us remember to check in on neighbours and lend a hand when we can.

I want to acknowledge the frontline workers who continue to serve the community during this season. Many spend long hours away from their families so the rest of us can enjoy the holidays safely and

comfortably. Their dedication does not go unnoticed, and we are truly grateful.

This season is also a great opportunity to support local businesses and give back in small ways that strengthen our community. Every gesture of kindness, big or small, makes a difference.

As we wrap up the year and look ahead to the next, I want to thank everyone for your continued strength, generosity, and community spirit. This is what makes our community such a special place to call home.

From my family to yours, I wish you peace, good health, and happiness this holiday season. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Holidays!

The multi-award-winning documentary We Lend a Hand was screened at Aurora Town Square on November 12th. The evening featured an insightful Q&A with both the director and the woman who uncovered the remarkable story behind the film. We Lend a Hand: The Forgotten Story of Ontario Farmerettes shares the extraordinary history of 40,000 teenage girls who volunteered on Canadian farms and played a vital role in supporting the war effort during the Second World War. Adding to the significance of the event, the audience included three Farmerettes now in their 90s who were part of this inspiring chapter in history.

The 16th annual Pine Tree Potters Guild Empty Bowls fundraiser was held on November 20th at Newmarket’s Old Town Hall. This cherished community event supports Inn from the Cold and Welcoming Arms, and since its inception has raised more than $250,000 for these two vital charities. Tickets sold out in less than two days—no surprise, as it’s one of the most anticipated events of the year. Each attendee selected a handcrafted bowl made by the talented Pine Tree Potters, then enjoyed filling it with delicious soups prepared by more than a dozen local restaurants and caterers. A beautiful blend of art, community spirit, and giving back.

As we look back on the past year, NewRoads Automotive Group is proud to reflect on the remarkable impact made throughout our community—bringing people together, supporting local causes, and creating memorable moments through several standout events.

In March, the much-anticipated “Girls Night Out” lit up the NewRoads Performing Arts Centre with an unforgettable evening of glamour, empowerment, and connection. In support of Girls Inc. of York Region, the event inspired laughter, meaningful conversations, and opportunities for women to uplift and learn from one another.

As summer eased into fall, NewRoads continued its commitment to giving back with the 10th annual LakeRide. Cyclists of all ages gathered for the Last Ride, pedalling in support of the mental health program at Southlake Regional Health Centre. The event was a powerful celebration of energy, generosity, and community spirit. As the final chapter of a decade-long tradition, it was especially moving to witness the lasting impact LakeRide has made over the past ten years.

Beyond these signature events, NewRoads Automotive Group continued to champion community-driven initiatives—from holiday donation drives to arts and culture partnerships. At every turn, the company stepped into places that matter, creating moments where business and benevolence intersect. As the leadership team often emphasizes, success isn’t measured solely in vehicles sold, but in lives touched and neighbours supported.

Looking ahead, NewRoads Automotive Group remains committed to building on this momentum—expanding beloved events, exploring new partnerships, and keeping community at the heart of everything they do. This year rea rmed that when a business opens its doors and its heart, the community gains far more than a service provider—it gains a champion.

The Central York Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual Women in Business event on October 30th at the beautiful Stonehaven Banquet Hall, and it was nothing short of empowering. Guided by moderator Magda Juliana Diaz of Elemental Truth, and fueled by the insights of panelists Amee Le of Mindful OT, Hollie Hoadley of Creative Solutions, and Phiona Durrant of Coconut Village Spa, the conversation was rich, honest, and deeply motivating. By the end of the event, the room was filled with inspiration, connection, and a renewed sense of possibility for women in business across our community

Victim Services of York Region, together with York Regional Police and the York Regional Police Association, hosted a cocktail reception to thank the participants and sponsors of their signature event, the Lip Sync Battle. Guests gathered at Stonehaven Banquet Hall to reconnect and learn more about the meaningful impact their contributions have on the individuals supported by Victim Services.

HAPPY Holidays! & Season’s Greetings

From your friends at Routes Connecting Communities

Traditions

December is a time for holidays, celebrations, traditions and getting together with family and friends. We reached out to our Routes Connecting Communities staff, volunteers and clients and asked about favourite cultural or holiday traditions. We’d like to share some of the responses with you.

“We decorate a Christmas tree and celebrate the final night of autumn, which is a special night for starting winter. We think it's the year's longest and darkest night. We have a small special table with particular nuts, watermelon, and pomegranates when we gather with friends or family.”

“We welcome winter, according to a fictional story, and grandparents typically narrate tales of older times. Yalda Night is a night that is quite close to Christmas Eve.”

“On the final Tuesday night of the year, we celebrate CHAHARSHANBEH SOURY (Red Wednesday). We light a few little fires so that everyone can jump over them while singing a special song. Making wishes is a key part of the celebration. In the past, people thought that after making a wish and going to the street to listen to others talk, they could determine whether or not their desires would come true based on what they heard”.

“In Poland, it’s typical to open presents on Christmas Eve after a dinner consisting of 12 different dishes (called Wigilia). After dinner, we typically open a few gifts for the tradition and then leave the rest until morning. I always look forward to Christmas Eve the most!.”

Best wishes for a safe, healthy holiday season!

The Oakridges Fashion Giving Shop kicked off the season with a beautiful VIP reception, welcoming the five local organizations that will receive proceeds from the 2025 Giving Shop. Representatives from the Alzheimer Society of York Region, CHATS, CFUW, Rose of Sharon Services for Young Mothers, and the Southlake Foundation each shared their stories, helping raise awareness for the meaningful work they do in our community. If you’re searching for a unique gift, stocking stuffer, or hostess present, consider visiting the Oakridges Fashion Giving Shop. Every purchase not only brings joy to someone on your list it also helps give back to our community.

The Roman Catholics in Newmarket

St. John’s Parish (for Newmarket and area) was opened as a mission in 1841. In 1838 the idea of erecting a Roman Catholic Church in Newmarket was raised, however, the small population didn’t warrant it. Prior to the potato famine in Ireland of 1847, Newmarket had a very small population of Roman Catholics. The issue was raised the following year, with new immigration, and the decision was made to build a Roman Catholic Church in Newmarket. The first church was erected on the north side of Ontario Street (just west of Main Street) in 1841. A graveyard was established immediately east of it (remains of the entrance way to this cemetery still exist). It wasn’t long before Newmarket’s first separate school was established in the church basement. The congregation soon outgrew the small church building. A new cemetery, also christened St. John’s) was established north of town on Main Street North (still in operation at 250 Main St. North.)

In1874 a new church, “St. John Chrysostom Church” was erected (pictured). It was built immediately west of the original church. In 1882 a new separate school building was erected – St. John’s school. By the 1970s the old church could no longer support the needs of the large Newmarket Roman Catholic congregation and in 1977 the old church was torn down. A new church was constructed on the south side of Ontario Street which still stands today. Less than ten years after it first opened its doors, however, the new St. John’s could not accommodate the growing population of Catholics in Newmarket and area, so plans for St. Elizabeth Seton Parish (on Leslie Street) began in the fall of 1986 under Father Matthew Robbertz. On November 24, 1991, the congregation of St. Elizabeth Seton proudly participated in the Solemn Blessing and Mass of Dedication of their new church.

The Aurora Men’s Shed group went above and beyond, generously digging into their own pockets to donate $1,200 to the Optimist Kind program. Their contribution will help support positive youth initiatives in our community, and we’re grateful for their continued commitment to making a meaningful difference.

Shout-out to the amazing Aviva volunteers! On October 22nd, a dedicated group joined the team at Rose of Sharon to pack groceries and essential items for the 150 young families this incredible organization supports each month. Thank you to these volunteers for lending their time, energy, and hearts to help make a difference!

A night of style and spirit lit up the NewRoads Performing Arts Centre in Newmarket on October 30th! The 2025 Whiskey, Wine & MR Menswear Fashion Show brought together fashion and philanthropy as physicians from Southlake Health traded their lab coats for the runway. This biennial signature event created by Mike Rathke, owner of MR Menswear and a cancer survivor—has been making an impact since 2007. This year, Mike and his team raised an incredible $140,000 in support of the Southlake Cancer Centre. A remarkable evening, powered by community, courage, and impeccable style.

Founded in 2017, Slabtown Cider Company is a family-owned and operated cidery and orchard. Located on the Oak Ridges Moraine just south of Uxbridge and surrounded by forest, trails and rolling fields. They have been working very hard to revitalize over 90 acres of historic fields into one of Canada’s largest collections of unique heritage heirloom apple cider varieties.

Established in 1870, the Siloam hamlet of Randallville historically held 10 houses, a post o ce, a school, and a lumber mill. The original settlement town, which focussed on the lumber and sawmill industry, quickly became known as “Slab Town” because of the piles of wood slabs stored around the mill. After experiencing the boom-and-bust of the lumber industry, the town eventually disappeared along with the local supply of logs. The team at Slabtown have made it part of their mission to preserve the history of Slab Town, Uxbridge and the historic orchards of Siloam.

Slabtown Armoury, operated by Slabtown Cider Company, recently opened its doors in Aurora to the community! Slabtown is a community-focused business celebrated for its farm-to-table dining, small-batch ciders and beers, and commitment to bringing people together. Slabtown Armoury’s menu highlights seasonal Ontario ingredients, with shareable plates, local meats, and produce taking centre stage. Guests can expect craft ciders and beers from Slabtown’s original Uxbridge cidery, alongside regional wines and cocktails inspired by local history.

Slabtown’s arrival at the Aurora Armoury has transformed this historic landmark into a vibrant destination that combines culinary experiences, community programming, and opportunities to book the space for private functions and special events. Through this new partnership with Slabtown, the Armoury continues its proud legacy, serving as a lively centre for food, culture, and community connection in downtown Aurora.
