On Remembrance Day we honour those who gave their lives to serve our country. Wear your poppy proudly during the Remembrance period, from the last Friday in October to the end of the day on November 11th! World Kindness Day is on November 13th. This global day promotes the importance of being kind to each other, to yourself and to the world. The purpose of this day is to help everyone understand that compassion for others is what binds us all together. This day is also referred to as Mr. Rogers Cardigan Day, and people are encouraged to express their kindness by wearing a cardigan sweater in the spirit of Fred Rogers. Black Friday falls on November 28th this year, and as you begin your holiday shopping remember to #SupportLocal. There are so many incredible local businesses that would appreciate your patronage!

Each month the Neighbour Paper will make you smile! If you have something you’d like to share or would like help promoting, please email llanning@neighbourmedia.ca

If you’ve ever come across the name Cute as a Button Girl, chances are you’ve already smiled before even seeing the products. Behind the pink, bow-topped logo and the adorable brand name is Cristiana — a young entrepreneur who’s been known around Newmarket, and the surrounding area, as the “Cute Button Girl.”

At just 6 years old, Cristiana had a big idea and an even bigger creative spark. In 2019, after spending a little too much time “pushing her parents’ buttons,” she asked if she could start making her own — literally. With support from her parents, she got her first button-making machine and began creating custom designs for friends. What began as a fun hobby soon blossomed into a growing small business. Cristiana’s signature logo — featuring her silhouette, pink palette, and signature hair bow — was her own concept, brought to life with help from her mom’s design skills. “Pink has always been my favourite colour,” she says, “and I loved wearing bows and big glasses at the time!”

Today, Cute as a Button Girl is proudly run by Cristiana and her mom, Monica, a talented graphic designer. Together, they design and handcraft custom buttons, magnets, charms, zipper pulls, keychains, and even pocket mirrors, bottle openers, and jewelry. Their items can now be found in stores across Canada and the U.S., as well as online through Etsy and Faire.

Her creativity and entrepreneurial spirit haven’t gone unnoticed. In 2022, Cristiana was awarded the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Pin in Newmarket, and the following year, she was recognized by Mazda Canada through their “Rising Legends” campaign. She’s also received a “Next Gen” award from the Open for Business Hub in Brampton and was featured by Hire and Fire Your Kids. Proudly shouting #NWMRKTPROUD, Cristiana and her mom love collaborating with local organizations, including partnering with the Newmarket Food Pantry and Newmarket’s own Rebecca and Joanne (the NWMRKTPROUD team). One of their favourite collaborations to date? A special series with Upper Canada Mall.

From her small studio to the shelves of stores across North America, Cristiana continues to make her mark — one cute button at a time. Follow her journey on social media at @cutebuttongirl and shop online at cutebuttongirl.etsy.com. Readers can enjoy 25% off a $20 Etsy order with the code NEIGHBOURMEDIA at checkout. #GoodNeighbour

On October 1st, RONA+ East Gwillimbury (18401 Yonge St. at Green Lane) hosted a Charitable Fundraising Breakfast! The community came by to enjoy freshly made breakfast sandwiches prepared by RONA employees, with a donation of $5+ supporting Community Living Central York. This breakfast was part of RONA’s Home Sweet Home campaign, a nationwide effort dedicated to building stronger communities through fundraising and local impact. Special thanks to the RONA+ East Gwillimbury team, who not only live and work in our community but also believe in giving back in meaningful ways. Together, we can make a difference and help individuals with diverse abilities thrive in our shared community.

Imagine if housing was on your holiday wish list. For over 300 individuals with diverse abilities in York Region, it is.

Supported individuals from Community Living Central York went to the Community Safety Village located within Bruce's Mill Conservation Area. The Community Safety Village is an interactive, educational facility where individuals learn about fire, tra c and personal safety. The village features a 10,000 square-foot learning centre with a human rights classroom, police, paramedic and fire education classrooms, complete with working tra c lights and signals and a fully equipped apartment where students learn to plan and execute a safe escape in case of an emergency. Children have the opportunity to utilize the new knowledge they've learned including the rules of the road, fire prevention and safety and CPR. Visits to the village are booked through York Region schools, but the public is encouraged to join during the many special events held throughout the year. DAWN GALLAGHER MURPHY

MPP for Newmarket–Aurora Building Our Community Together

A MESSAGE FROM MPP DAWN GALLAGHER MURPHY

905-853-9889 Dawn.GallagherMurphy@pc.ola.org dawngallaghermurphy MurphyGallagher Dawn Gallagher Murphy

As autumn fills Newmarket–Aurora with vibrant colour, it’s a time to reflect on community, gratitude, and the progress we’ve made together.

This month, I was proud to join members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 385 in Aurora to celebrate a $110,300 provincial investment through the Ontario Trillium Foundation. For 50 years, the Aurora Legion has been a place of remembrance and connection. This funding will support essential facility upgrades, ensuring Veterans and residents continue to have a welcoming place to gather for years to come. As a Legion member, I know how meaningful this investment is to our community.

Partner:

In Aurora, Ontario is also investing $1.5 million through the Skills Development Fund to help local youth, women, newcomers, and workers develop hands-on skills in agriculture and agri-food sectors. Through partnerships with STEM Minds and Boreal Farms, participants gain valuable training and job opportunities — preparing for the workforce of tomorrow.

Across the province, our government continues to strengthen long-term care by increasing annual funding to a record $1.92 billion, supporting higher sta ng levels and better quality of care for residents. This builds on our efforts to recruit and train over 16,000 nurses and personal support workers across Ontario. Each of these initiatives reflects our commitment to building strong, connected, and caring communities. As we enter November — a month of remembrance and gratitude — let’s honour those who served and continue to make Newmarket–Aurora a wonderful place to call home.

MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy’s 4th Annual Community BBQ was an absolute hit! On September 28th, Riverwalk Commons was buzzing with excitement as hundreds of residents came together for an afternoon of fun, food, music, and community spirit. From face painting and surprise visits from Spider-Man and Elsa, to mouthwatering burgers and corn from Wicked Eats, every moment was packed with smiles and hometown pride. Here’s to another amazing celebration of the people that make our community shine!

The Ontario government is investing $1.5 million through the Skills Development Fund Training Stream to support youth in Aurora to get the skills they need to land good-paying, in-demand jobs in agriculture. In partnership with STEM Minds and Boreal Farms, the Future of Food and Farming Skills Development for a Transitioning Industry project will address existing skills gaps and meet the growing demand for workers in Ontario’s agriculture and agri-food sectors. The initiative will empower high school students, youth, women, newcomers, and transitioning workers with immersive learning experiences, industry-relevant curriculum, and community engagement opportunities related to agri-tech, agri-food, and skilled trades.

The Mount Albert community was invited to enjoy a free BBQ hosted by Primrose Construction to learn more about the Mount Albert Revitalization project on October 2nd. It was an opportunity to meet with the project team and Councillors to answer any questions and discuss what’s ahead for Mount Albert.

Spycraft: A Riveting Live Theatre WWII

Thriller About Courage, Code, and Knitting

Step into a world of intrigue and bravery with Spycraft, a gripping live theatre experience coming to Aurora Town Square on November 25. Audiences can choose between a 10 a.m. matinee for groups and schools or an evening performance at 7 p.m. open to the public.

From the creators of The Knitting Pilgrim—the internationally acclaimed production that toured six countries, earned a “10 Best” nod from Now Magazine, and scored an unbelievable 6 out of 5 stars from CFMU Radio—comes a gripping new drama: Spycraft.

Critics are already calling Spycraft a “a stunning piece of theatre… glorious and so moving” (Lynn Slotkin) and “the most beautiful show I’ve seen at the Ottawa Fringe,” (Apt613 Brian M Carroll).

Set in 1942, and inspired by true events, Spycraft follows a middle-aged Canadian woman and hidden Jew who joins Churchill’s Special Operations Executive in London. Faced with doubt from her male peers, she’s sent to occupied France where her greatest weapon isn’t a gun, it’s her knitting needles. Using her craft to encode messages and smuggle intelligence to the Allies, she turns an act of quiet domesticity into an extraordinary act of courage.

In the style of The Imitation Game, Spycraft weaves suspense, courage, and compassion into a remarkable tale of resistance and resilience. Learn more and buy your tickets at aurora.ca/WhatsOn.

Hello Neighbours, I am back at Queens Park for the fall sitting after a busy summer across York-Simcoe. It’s been inspiring to see so many amazing developments taking shape in our community.

I was proud to join the groundbreaking ceremony for a new Catholic Elementary School in Queensville, scheduled to open in 2027. I also welcomed Minister Lecce and partners to o cially open the new clean energy plant called the York Battery Energy Storage System in York–Simcoe.

Recently, I toured East Gwillimbury’s new Health and Active Living Plaza ahead of its grand opening. What a magnificent facility Mayor Hackson and her team have built for residents. Congratulations to Team EG on this thoughtful design, attention to detail, on building a warm, active space that supports both physical and mental well-being.

Looking ahead, I’m inviting families to my Second Annual Gingerbread House Decorating Party for children in York–Simcoe. Join me at the Mount Albert Community Centre on November 22nd from 9:30 to 11:30 AM. This free event is a seasonal favourite, but space is limited. Please call 905-895-1555 to register your child.

I’m also honoured to have been appointed to the National Order of the Legion of Honour, France’s highest distinction for military and civil merit. This recognition reflects the support I’ve received in championing Francophone culture. I couldn’t do this work without the incredible support of my riding, and its residents. Thank you, York-Simcoe, for continuing to put your trust in me!

NEIGHBOURHOOD PETS

"Crisp air, crunchy leaves, and sweater weatherNovember is here!"

Willow

I’m Willow - a 1.5 year old Vizsla, full of energy, love, and mischief! Running is my absolute favourite thing to do! I have a strong hunting instinct and can spend hours stalking and pointing at birds (it’s serious business). Squirrels, on the other hand… let’s just say we don’t get along. I adore my family. I love to roughhouse and play chase with my little human sister, catch the frisbee with my dad, and snuggle up with my big human sister on the couch. My mum is my favourite person to follow around, mostly because she’s the one with the treats!

Hey! I’m Remy, aka Remmers, Rat-boy, and butter-ball. I live with my mom and sister… oh yeah, and my dad too. My family smothers me with love and I can’t stand it! I’d much rather be running around stealing scrunchies out of their hair, or munching on slippers. Apparently I'm full of these things called “beans” and even after going for a run, I still have plenty to spare. I have a very short list of people and dogs I feel comfortable around. But I love my groomer Carli, she says I’m an angel….and I have to agree.

Cleo

Hi There! I’m Cleo. My humans say that I’m a dog, but I do like to hang out on the backs of chairs and couches, so I think I might be some sort of cat. To be fair, though, I LOVE socializing with other dogs, so maybe not! I also love treats, walks, and chasing balls (especially the squeaky ones!). I’m very high energy, so going to the Social Pup for playdates really helps me stay calm(er).

Rumin, Bennie & Daisy

My name is Rumin, and I am a 10 year old Golden Retriever. I consider myself a dog of few words and don’t really speak (bark) unless I have something important to say. I thought it would be nice to have my nephew Bennie come live with us five years ago, however his favourite toy was my ear, and I ended up with a blood clot that required surgery because of him pulling it all the time. It took a while, but I have forgiven him. Our Sister, Daisy joined us three years ago. She is bossy and pushy, but she quickly bonded with her big brother Bennie, and they are virtually inseparable (even though she picks on him all the time – he has a lot of patience and a big heart).

Charlie

Hi there! I know we normally do single pictures here, but my owner thought this one was just too cute. My name is Charlie, but I also answer to Chuck or Chucky, or just about anything else really. I am a Springer Spaniel, and this is my absolute best friend in the world Cassie, who is a Bengal cat. Some would say we're unusual friends, but we love hanging out together. We live by a lake and she's not much of a swimmer, but I absolutely love a good swim. Not sure why, but she doesn't love a boat ride, but I sure do. Most of the time we just like hanging out!

Jolene

Hi, I’m Jolene, a purebred miniature poodle named after Dolly Parton’s song, Jolene. Unlike the song, I’m not the redhead who steals a woman’s man, because I prefer dog owners instead. On my walks, I greet people and wait for rubs. People are the best, and I love them. I live by a lake and love the summers because my parents take me for long walks by the water, where I chase squirrels and birds. Sometimes, I wait patiently on the couch and dream about seeing the grandchildren. When my parents laze around the house, I cuddle up next to them like the diva that I am. Living the dream!

Newmarket’s 2026 Budget Process is underway!

Sponsored by Saturday, November 15 | 6:30 to 9 p.m. Seniors’ Meeting Place (474 Davis Drive) Pre-registration required

newmarket.ca/adults55+

Each year the Town of Newmarket undertakes a detailed budgetprocess to ensure we are meeting the needs of our community now and in the future. We engage the community to get valuable input.

The Goal:

To find the balance between keeping municipal taxes low, while investing in Town infrastructure, preparing for the future and maintaining the services that make Newmarket a top place to live in Canada.

Get involved:

• Tune into upcoming virtual and in-person Council meetings on: November 10, December 1 and December 8 at 1 p.m.

• Follow the Town’s social media channels (@TownofNewmarket) to engage in the 2026 Budget and for chances to win gift cards to local businesses.

Snow is coming, and Newmarket is prepared. Plowing begins when there is more than 6cm of snow. It can take up to 16 hours to plow 624km of roads and 364km of sidewalks. Yard waste is collected bi-weekly until December. Do not exceed 50lbs per container and place at the curb by 7 a.m. Don’t sweep leaves onto the road, this can cause flooding. Edge your sod and ensure all landscape features are at least 18 inches from the sidewalk to limit damage to your property during sidewalk snow plowing. Hosting guests overnight? You can park in 6 Town

more about winter parking at Newmarket.ca/ParkingExemptions Winter parking rules are now in effect until April 15, 2026. Do not park on the street overnight (between 2 a.m. to 6 a.m.) or you risk getting a $100 ticket. Regular parking restrictions still apply.

Recognizing Exceptional Residents

Great communities are built by great people. Newmarket is fortunate to have many caring residents who go above and beyond to help others. These are the people who quietly make a difference every day, enriching our community in the process. They serve community meals, deliver food, coach kids’ sports, and lead cadet corps and Girl Guide groups. They organize fundraisers, promote sustainability and healthy living, and advocate for a more inclusive world. They shovel neighbours’ driveways and drive others to medical appointments. We all know people like this – those who make a better world without seeking recognition.

For the past month, the Town has been accepting nominations for a newly revamped Community Awards program. These awards will provide a meaningful way to celebrate caring residents who go above and beyond to make Newmarket a better place for all.

This year’s awards include the Raymond J. Twinney Memorial Youth Award, Environmental Award of Merit, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Award, Mentoring Youth Award, Seniors Champion/Advocate Award, Community Innovator Award, Healthy Lifestyle Advocate Award, Random Acts of Kindness Award, Outstanding Volunteer Contribution Award, and the Citizen of the Year Award. These awards will be presented at a ceremony at the end of this month, honouring some of Newmarket’s outstanding residents.

For more information or to see this year’s recipients, visit newmarket.ca/communityawards. In addition to the annual awards, the Town will also recognize exceptional achievements in sports and the arts every other year.

By celebrating caring residents who give their time and energy to lift others up, we not only honour their contributions but inspire others to do the same – building a stronger, more connected, and more vibrant Newmarket for everyone.

visit! This generous team not only gave their time sorting toys, books, and blankets for families this holiday season — their $1,500 RBC grant also helped Rose of Sharon purchase new pick and pack carts for their food pantry, making it easier for volunteers to prepare Family Care Packages year-round. Thank you, RBC, for your continued partnership and for helping make a real difference in the lives of young mothers and their families.

Game, set, match for a great cause! Sandra Cobena, MP for Newmarket–Aurora, and her husband Matthijs teamed up against Mayor John Taylor and his wife Michelle in a friendly charity tennis match in support of Victim Services of York Region. The rally was full of laughs, great shots, and community spirit and the real winner of the night was Victim Services, with over $10,000 raised! The good vibes carried on at the after-party at The Lounge on Main, with delicious food generously sponsored by Main Street Realty. That’s community leadership at its best coming together, having fun, and making a difference!

Davis Tannery

This picture postcard was taken about 1910 to promote the Davis Tannery, located on the north side of Huron Street (now Davis Drive). In its hey-day the Davis Tannery imported 5,000 raw skins a week and was the prime supplier of fine calf leather in the British Empire. Today the building still remains, remodelled in 1986 into a high-class shopping mall, event centre and o ces. Although no longer a mall, the building still exists as testament to the family and the leather business.

What an incredible celebration it was on October 4th at Oktoberfest Newmarket; Prost on Main Street! From the delicious food and drinks, to the sense of camaraderie filling Main Street, it was a true reflection of community spirit at its best. A heartfelt THANK YOU to Juli Playter and the event organizers for choosing to donate the proceeds to Community Living Central York. Shout-out to the amazing Main Street restaurants and businesses who participated and poured their hearts into making the event a success. Prost!

Planning a Business Event?

Don’t Forget These 5 Things

1. Know Your Why : What’s the purpose of the event? Your “why” should guide all the decisions you make.

2. Music Sets the Mood : Music helps with energy, vibes and—most importantly—avoids that awkward silence when people first walk in and don’t know where to go. Trust me on this one.

3. Nametags, Always : Don't overcomplicate thispeel-and-stick labels + a few colourful markers = gold.

4. Build in Buffer Time : Add 5 extra minutes to every agenda item. Things always run a bit over—and your guests will appreciate a well-paced, on-time event.

5. Post-Event Survey : Create a short Google Form with 2–4 questions for your attendees. Ask what they loved, what could be improved, and if they’d attend again. It’s also a great place to grab testimonials.

On September 25th, to mark Pet Hunger Awareness Day, they donated an incredible $100,000 grant to The Food Bank of York Region. This vital funding will help ensure that families and their beloved pets get the support they need. PetSmart Charities of Canada joined The Food Bank of York Region, Feed Ontario, and local partners from the Markham, Richmond Hill, and Newmarket Food Pantry to celebrate this amazing partnership and recognize the volunteers who make it all possible. Let’s continue to support our local food banks, because every helping hand (and paw) makes a difference.

25 Years of Natural—Rocky Now Open at Upper Canada Mall and Sherway Gardens

When we think about connecting to nature, most of us picture the scenic moments—weekend hikes, bike rides through the countryside, walks on the beach. But nature isn’t something we need to escape to. She’s already here, all around us: in the warmth of the morning sun, the joy of a new leaf on a houseplant, the resiliency of a dandelion growing through the cracks of a Sidewalk.

These aren’t just passing moments. They’re essential. When we pause to notice them, we feel connected, grounded, and so, so alive.

For 25 years, Rocky (formerly Rocky Mountain Soap Co.) has been crafting products made with natural ingredients from their workshop in the Canadian Rockies. Rooted in their connection to the outdoors, owners Karina Birch and Cam Baty were inspired by the idea that everyday moments connect us to nature. What started with just two employees and a handful of formulas, has grown into a trusted Canadian brand offering more than 350 essentials for your face, body, and hair.

Now open at Upper Canada Mall and Sherway Gardens, Rocky’s newest locations are more than places to shop—they’re designed to bring nature indoors. Each store features natural materials and a central sink, where guests can try products, explore textures and aromas inspired by the Canadian wilderness, and hear the stories behind each formula from knowledgeable associates.

From the beginning, Rocky has followed nature’s lead—prioritizing purpose over trends and care over convenience. Today, they continue to turn daily routines into opportunities to connect with the natural world, helping you live Earth Every Day, wherever you are.

MAYOR MRAKAS

Remembrance Day

As we approach Remembrance Day, it’s a time to reflect, honour, and show our gratitude to the men and women who have served, sacrificed, and continue to stand on guard for Canada.

This year, we’re proud to unveil a new Commemorative Crosswalk at Yonge and Murray, just steps from the Aurora War Memorial. Created in partnership with Aurora Legion Branch 385, the crosswalk features the approved Royal Canadian Legion design—a stylized maple leaf that pays tribute to all who have served. Designed by the Legion’s National Headquarters, this graphic is now used by branches across Canada to mark remembrance in a visible, lasting way.

Aurora’s military heritage runs deep. From the early days of the York Militia to the Queen’s York Rangers who still serve today, hundreds of Aurorans have answered the call—from the Fenian Raids to Afghanistan. The new crosswalk is a meaningful addition to our landscape, connecting past and present in a place where our community gathers to remember.

On Sunday, November 9, the Aurora Legion will host its annual Remembrance Day Parade and Ceremony. The parade begins at 10:20 a.m. at GW Williams High School and proceeds south on Yonge Street to the Cenotaph. A second service will be held Tuesday, November 11 at 10:45 a.m., including the laying of a limited number of wreaths.

As you walk or drive through Town this month, look for the Aurora Legion’s Veteran Banners hanging from lampposts along Yonge Street and Wellington. These tributes, along with the new crosswalk, offer powerful reminders of the courage and commitment of those who serve.

Lest we forget.

A special ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the Aurora War Memorial was held on October 3rd. Built in 1925 by the communities of Aurora, Whitchurch, and King, the memorial honours those who served and sacrificed in the First World War. This re-dedication ceremony invited us to reflect on their legacy and the enduring impact of their service. The Aurora War Memorial is located at the Peace Park, 14659 Yonge Street.

Remembrance Day

MICHAEL PARSA, MPP

A Message from Michael Parsa

Each year, Remembrance Day offers us more than a moment of silence—it offers a moment of perspective. In a world that often moves too fast, November 11th asks us to pause and reflect on what it truly means to live in peace and freedom.

The red poppy we wear is not just a symbol—it is a reminder of real people, real stories, and real sacrifice. Every name on a memorial is a testament to the life of a valorous individual who lived with courage and the unwavering spirit of service. And this courage was born by the belief that some values are worth defending, even at great cost.

As we remember those who served, we are also called to carry forward the values they defended. In our daily lives, that might mean showing kindness where there is division, courage where there is fear, and compassion where there is need.

The Town of Aurora proudly unveiled the Unity on Canvas mural at the Aurora Leisure Complex on October 6th. This vibrant artwork is a reflection of our shared story and marks the first activation of the Town of Aurora Sport Plan. Created by more than 300 community members, the mural stands as a powerful symbol of inclusion, belonging, and empowerment in sport. It represents the Town’s ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where individuals of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds can participate, lead, and thrive. This collaborative project highlights the strong partnership between the Town, local sport organizations, and community partners showcasing what we can achieve when we come together through art and sport.

MPP for Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill

Remembrance, after all, is not only about the past—it’s about how we choose to live in the present.

To our veterans, your service continues to inspire us. The Ontario Soldiers’ Aid Commission is here to support you and your families, offering financial assistance for health, housing, and well-being needs. This program ensures that those who served Canada with honour continue to receive the care they deserve.

I encourage everyone to take a moment to honour these brave individuals and to reflect on the weight of their sacrifices.

Lest We Forget.

Partner MICHAEL PARSA, MPP Aurora–Oak Ridges–Richmond Hill

On September 30th, the Town of Aurora observed the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with a flag raising at Aurora Town Hall, followed by an evening ceremony at Aurora Town Square. This day honours the children who never returned home, the survivors of residential schools, and their families and communities. Public commemoration of this tragic and painful history and its ongoing impacts remains a vital part of the reconciliation process.

Why Hearing Aid Fitting Is So Important

A professional hearing aid fitting is one of the most important steps on your journey to better hearing. After your hearing test and device selection, a fitting ensures that your hearing aids are customized to your specific needs — not just comfortable, but fine-tuned for optimal performance.

At HearingLife, every fitting includes precise programming based on your hearing test results. Using advanced real-ear measurements, specialists place a tiny microphone in your ear to measure how sound is delivered through your hearing aid. This process allows for the most accurate adjustments, ensuring your devices work perfectly for your unique hearing profile.

But a fitting is more than technology — it’s about empowering you. During your appointment, you’ll learn how to use, clean, and care for your hearing aids, leaving confident and supported. Follow-up visits are also scheduled to make any necessary adjustments as you adapt to your new devices.

If you already have hearing aids that don’t feel or sound right, HearingLife can help reprogram them for improved comfort and clarity. With flexible payment options, including 0% financing through the Hear Now, Pay Later plan, better hearing has never been more accessible.

Book your free hearing test today and experience the HearingLife difference.

Financial Literacy: A Foundation for Confidence and Resilience

When people think about finance, they often picture complex formulas and abstract numbers. Yet those numbers shape how we live — how we budget our households, plan our future, and provide for our families. Since 2011, November has been recognized as Financial Literacy Month in Canada. But financial literacy is more than understanding money — it’s about developing skills and confidence to make informed decisions, manage debt wisely, and plan for the unexpected.

In conversations with families and business owners across Newmarket–Aurora, two concerns arise: affordability and community safety. It’s easy to see why.

Chronic government overspending, extensive regulation, and high taxation have weakened Canada's economy. As a result, Canada has fallen out of the top ten in the Economic Freedom of the World Index, while the United States remains in the top five.

Unfortunately, the government is changing how it defines "capital investments" in the federal budget, putting Canada outside international standards. This makes it harder for Canadians to understand how money is spent and hides the extent of reckless spending.

Understanding how money and budgets work empowers us to face uncertainty with resilience.

Please see the new budget cycle included on this page. If you want to join our post-budget review workshop this month, please send a note to sandra.cobena@parl.gc.ca.

Financial literacy is a skill, a safeguard for families, and a cornerstone of a prosperous, resilient Canada.

Fitness As We Age: Optimal Exercises For Seniors

For seniors, the best exercises are those that enhance strength, balance, flexibility, and cardiovascular health while minimizing the risk of injury. A well-rounded fitness routine typically includes aerobic, strength, balance, and flexibility exercises.

Aerobic exercises, such as walking, cycling, and swimming, are excellent choices for seniors as they improve heart health and stamina without putting undue strain on the joints. These low-impact activities can be adjusted to suit the individual's fitness level and can be done regularly for 20-30 minutes, several days a week.

Strength training is also crucial for seniors as it helps maintain muscle mass, which naturally declines with age. Simple exercises like bodyweight squats, leg lifts, or using resistance bands and light weights can help build strength. These exercises enhance mobility and independence, making daily tasks easier. It’s important to start with lighter weights and gradually increase the resistance.

Balance exercises are essential for fall prevention, a significant concern among older adults. Activities like standing on one leg, tai chi, or yoga can improve stability and coordination. These exercises help seniors maintain better posture and reduce the likelihood of falls.

Flexibility exercises, such as stretching or yoga, are vital for maintaining joint mobility and reducing stiffness. Gentle stretching can improve range of motion and reduce muscle tightness, contributing to overall well-being. Before starting any exercise program, seniors should consult a healthcare provider to ensure the activities are safe and appropriate for their individual health conditions. Regular physical activity can significantly improve the quality of life and maintain independence as one ages.

At Amica Aurora Promenade, our upcoming senior lifestyles residence, we look forward to offering fitness classes every day, hitting on a variety of exercises each week. Learn more when you call Lesley or Ladi at 905-726-2220.

Opportunities for Youth

Routes Connecting Communities promotes and supports a number of initiatives that focus on youth in our community. Through our Central Newmarket Community Action Table (CN CAT), and other partnerships, there are many opportunities for youth to become involved and learn knew skills.

Youth drop in Programs run each week in partnership with Maple Leaf Public School and Dr. J. M. Denison Secondary School. Please see the flyer on this page for more details on upcoming events.

Youth Ambassadors are a key part of all our programming. Ambassadors actively participate in working group discussions, events, and initiatives within the community, sharing, insights, experiences, and knowledge. They also help promote the CN CAT and its activities through promoting on social media channels and in person via flyers and any other materials that can benefit the community. We have had Youth Ambassadors gain valuable leadership skills by taking the initiative to plan and lead Quick Action Grants.

As you can see – lots of ways for youth to become or stay connected in our community. To learn more about these programs please reach out to us! khalil@routescc.org or sandra@routescc.org.

Eat, Drink, Play & Shop IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD

Grandma Loves You

Family-run Toronto favourite Grandma Loves You — known for its over-the-top gourmet subs and hot dogs — is expanding beyond city limits with a brand-new location in Aurora.

Owned by husband-and-wife team Artin and Sarah, the restaurant has quickly become one of Toronto’s top-rated sandwich spots, earning nods from Yelp, Toronto Life, and Breakfast Television. Their loaded foot-long subs and creative hot dogs have gained a loyal following of over 56,000 fans online, all drawn to the brand’s mix of comfort, quality, and heart.

The new outpost, opened on September 6th in St. Andrew’s Village plaza (Yonge St. and Orchard Heights Blvd.), and marked the restaurant’s first venture outside the city. To celebrate, the first 100 customers after noon received a free sandwich and drink.

Artin and Sarah say the move to Aurora felt right: “We’ve always dreamed of expanding beyond Toronto, but we wanted to do it with heart. Aurora is beautiful, family-oriented, and full of community spirit.”

Grandma Loves You also offers catering services, bringing their signature warmth and flavour to special events — continuing their mission to share food made with love in settings that feel welcoming and connected.

EMERGING A UROR A

“We’re honoured to bring new life to one of Aurora’s most cherished landmarks,” said Lori Feddema, co-owner of Slabtown. “From the moment we stepped into the historic Armoury, we knew it had something special — a sense of history, pride and community that perfectly reflects what Slabtown is all about. Our vision is to create a space that feels both familiar and inspiring — a place where people can come together over great food, craft beverages, and shared stories. Slabtown Armoury is open to the public for farm-to-table dining with a menu that features local flavour, from the farmers who grow our ingredients to the cider and beer we craft in Uxbridge. We look forward to hosting events for community organizations, local businesses, as well as corporate and private groups. We are excited to offer something for everyone, from residents and families to local organizations and visitors. Thank you, Aurora, for such a warm welcome. We’re thrilled to begin this next chapter and to see Slabtown Armoury become a place where memories are made for years to come.”

Established in the 1800s, Aurora is a growing town with the essence of new ideas, new technologies and constant learning.
