COVER STORY

Sierra Costa, Jim Thomson, Stefano Serpa & The Aurora Tigers

Inclusion, breaking barriers and supporting the community is what these three individuals stand for. In a sport dominated by men, Jim Thomson, former NHL player and the owner of the Aurora Tigers since 2015, hired the first female GM in the history of the CJHL. In addition to the Aurora Tigers, Jim is a motivational speaker who has been invited to speak at schools across North America as part of his organization called Jim Thomson's "Dreams Do Come True".

Sierra Costa attended school for Sport Management and her attention to detail, organizational abilities, her confidence and command during events were the skills that Jim was looking for when hiring a new GM this year. Sierra, at the age of 24, knew that accepting this role as the first female GM in the league was not only about her position with the team, but also about being a role model for other women aspiring to get into male dominated fields, inspiring them to always pursue their dreams!

Serpa Motorsports, a division of the Serpa Automotive Group in Aurora, a family-run business since 1995, believes in the importance of community, giving back and supporting our youth. Sponsoring an organization that is strong in their commitment to inclusion and leads by example are qualities that Vice President Stefano Serpa is proud to put his name on.

Eat, Drink and Play IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD

A one-of-a-kind event space specializing in creating luxurious, yet attainable, events. Born out of a love for connection, this space is rooted in a passion for bringing people together in intimate, thoughtful settings to celebrate life’s most memorable milestones (with incredible décor, food and service to match).

As veterans of the service industry, we know how to put on an event you and your guests will talk about for years to come. But we hope it’s the connection to our team and the space that keeps you coming back.

ENVISION YOUR DREAM EVENT

What are the most important aspects that come to mind? An Instagram-worthy design aesthetic with lavish décor, beautiful florals and a customized layout reminiscent of a luxury resort? Bespoke catering and customized cocktails that will leave guests hungry for more? Exceptional service that takes care of all the details, leaving you without a worry in your mind?

Or perhaps it’s more about the emotion in the room…

The thoughtfully put-together guest list of your closest family and friends. The laughter and joy radiating from people who haven’t seen each other in years. The deep connection and sense of togetherness you feel while celebrating life with the people you love.

When you walk into our space, you can’t help falling in love (all over again) with the modern, elevated bar mixed with the antique exposed-brick charm. It’s a vibe that screams upscale Toronto with the down-to-earth, caring nature of Main Street Newmarket.

Your friends and family are mingling around the indoor-outdoor setting—some gathered on the waterside patio taking in the view, others raving about the beautiful décor and florals that were designed with your unique vision in mind. No detail has been spared.

It’s like we’ve taken the vision board inside your head and brought it to life.

At the full-service bar, you’re o ered the choice between a custom cocktail or a self-serve glass of bubbly from the champagne wall (or both—it’s your day). The sta are already taking care of your guests, remembering their favourite drinks and blending in like family themselves.

Our head chef has worked tirelessly to create a menu that matches the vibe, starting with carefully curated canapés followed by a beautifully plated seated dinner. Or maybe you’ve gone with themed food stations for a more laid-back vibe. Whatever’s on the menu, you find your guests complimenting you on the food as if you made it yourself.

The Town of Aurora, along with council and generous partners Desjardins Insurance, SmartCentres and Lind Realty Team, o cially unveiled a diversity and inclusion mural on the northern wall of 15105 Yonge Street, produced in partnership with the Moonlight Murals Collective. The mural, entitled Community Builds Community, depicts hands of various ethnicities and genders sewing a quilted blanket that contains patches reflective of the many cultures and language groups that call Aurora home.

Do You know Someone with Dementia?

A friend of mine, David, suffers from Alzheimer’s Disease, a form of dementia.

It’s not been easy to observe his deteriorating condition, made worse by knowing that there is no cure for it. Do you know someone with dementia?

The Alzheimer Society of Canada just published NAVIGATING THE PATH FORWARD FOR DEMENTIA IN CANADA-Report 1. The Report estimated that there were 597,300 individuals in 2020, living with dementia. By 2030, we can expect this number of new cases will reach close to 1 million. There will be an overall increase of 65% in the number of Canadians living with dementia.

Perhaps, it’s now time to better equip ourselves with a more knowledgeable understanding of dementia.

What is dementia? Dementia is not a specific disease but it describes a set of symptoms caused by specific disruptions to healthy brain functioning that reduce a person’s ability to perform everyday activities.

These symptoms can include memory loss, di culties with attention, problem solving and language; changes in mood and behaviour; and issues with vision, balance, and movement. There are several different subtypes of dementia, which are explored in Part 2 of this series about dementia.

The Pickering College Back to School BBQ took place on September 6th. The annual bbq is an opportunity for faculty, students and parents to reconnect and begin the school year!

Aurora Bell Box Murals Project

From August-September 2022, artists from within and around Aurora took part in the Aurora Bell Box Murals project. This project is a response to Call to Action #83

Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists to undertake collaborative projects and produce works that contribute to the reconciliation process.

One Indigenous and one non-Indigenous artist were paired together for each Bell Box Mural. Following an assigned theme, artists worked together to conceptualize, design and paint a collaborative mural to be enjoyed by our community and future generations to come.

I’m excited to run for your Ward 1 Councillor! It’s been a huge honour to be your voice on Council for the past 3 terms! My objectives are to listen to your concerns and represent you; continuing to focus on revitalization of our Downtown; celebrate year-round community and cultural events; ensure our Towns’ O cial Plan is upheld; create a Tra c Safety Committee to address related concerns; ensure sports, leisure and youth facilities are current and continue to meet your needs.

Ward 1 Residents continue to be concerned with the train horn. This issue has been investigated by our Legal Counsel, however, there must be more done. If elected, I will create a dedicated Citizen, Council and Staff Committee to focus and solve this on-going concern.

I pride myself in working with individual residents, trying my best to resolve their specific issues and concerns by being their trusted Advocate.

For the first time in 16 years I'm not running an election campaign, and I must admit I miss what would have been a daily routine of knocking on doors, speaking with residents and encouraging people to vote, but I also appreciate the ‘found time’ to focus on some

of our more substantial challenges and opportunities. I am very proud of what we have accomplished over the past four years and I am excited by the work ahead.

From the water flowing from your taps, to the roads you drive on, to the arenas, pools and parks that you, your family, and friends enjoy, the Town has a significant impact on your day-to-day life. The people who make the critical decisions about the future direction of Newmarket matter, so please take the time to learn about who is on the ballot and vote for the people who you think will be the best at continuing to make Newmarket the best place to live and work.

The Town makes it easy to vote. For 10 days, from October 15 to 24, you can vote online, by phone, or in person (at the Magna Centre or Ray Twinney Complex).

Public Consultation for the outdoor skatepark in Newmarket began in 2020. Through an extensive public engagement process, over 400+ participants provided their feedback on what they wanted to see at Newmarket’s first outdoor skatepark. Their feedback helped shape this unique Newmarket facility that will provide more much-needed recreational opportunities for youth to exercise, be outdoors and have fun! On August 30th, local dignitaries and members of the community gathered at the Magna Centre for the grand opening of this amazing new outdoor skatepark.

We want to give a Neighbour Shoutout to the Newmarket Events Team for all of their hard work this summer! From left to right, a big round of applause to Nicole, Tracy, Dave, Jesse and Kim.

We think Still In Style Resale Boutique, located on Main Street in Newmarket, is FABULOUS!! For the past 10 years they have been supporting The Canadian Centre for Abuse Awareness. Ellen Campbell, CEO of Abuse Hurts, presented Cathy Forhan Humpage a canvas print with the agencies signature Hummingbird in appreciation for their continued support.

MARTIN KRUZE 25TH ANNIVERSARY

In February of 1997, Martin Kruze stepped forward to talk about the horrific abuse he and other young boys had endured within the walls of Maple Leaf Gardens. The story and the exposure of the pedophile ring turned into a media firestorm here in Canada and around the world, with Martin even telling his story on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Martin was so relieved to bring the subject of child sexual abuse out into the open and to help other survivors, but the demands on Martin’s shattered soul became too much and he took his life on October 30, 1997.

This month will mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of Martin’s passing and it’s caused many people to pause and reflect on what has happened over the years to combat the issue and fallout of sexual abuse.

“Sadly, I feel there is still so much that needs to be done,” says Ellen Campbell, CEO and Founder of Abuse Hurts. “While I’m encouraged there is more help and awareness out there now, it is still not enough, and I’m surprised and disappointed that we are still where we are.”

This month, Abuse Hurts salutes Martin and all the courageous Survivors of abuse who have come forward to tell their stories and find the strength to heal. We will continue the fight to bring awareness and legislative change so precious lives can be saved and spared.

Twenty-five years have passed, but Martin’s vision and mission will continue to live on in our hearts…

Message from Rachel

Listening to thousands of voters in recent months, I am often asked why I’m running.

The answer …my work is simply not done.

Aurora is emerging from two very challenging years where family priorities have changed. That’s why we need to continue making smart and strategic investments now, more than ever.

This means responsible spending of taxpayer dollars, advocating for more climate action, community engagement, and supporting small businesses.

You deserve a Councillor who will advocate for the betterment of our community. I will lean on my passion, preparedness and EXPERIENCE to continue to be accountable to YOU and champion YOUR ideas.

On Oct 24, I ask for your support. Re-Elect Rachel Gilliland, for Ward 2.

Four years ago, I made a commitment to work with Council, Residents and Businesses to get things done. Together, we have invested wisely in our community, achieved the lowest 4-year tax rate in 20 years, taken steps to protect our environment and preserve our built heritage. Together, we got things done.

I have worked hard to be accessible and responsive to the needs of the residents and businesses of Aurora. I put people before politics – and always put Aurora first. I have been your voice at all levels of government as a fierce advocate for our community.

My passion for our Town continues and there’s more work to be done.

From adopting smarter growth initiatives that protect Aurora from overdevelopment to continuing to prioritize fiscal accountability to maximize value for taxpayer dollars; from strategies that incentivize the building of attainable housing to economic development initiatives that grow our local economy, I will continue to provide the collaborative leadership and community focused, common sense solutions that you expect.

The future of Aurora is bright.

To continue to build a more vibrant, more liveable community, Aurora needs experienced Leadership that Cares Is Engaged and Gets Results

As a near 20 year resident of this amazing town, this is where I work, shop, volunteer, coach, exercise and engage with the community.

As vice-chair of the Committee of Adjustment, I see where we need to focus our efforts to protect our neighbourhoods, tree canopy and our green-spaces. This is my priority.

I will also leverage my expertise in mobility, tra c strategies and small business development to continue to support and allow our downtown core to thrive.

In addition, with the upcoming 15 minute GO train impacting east-west (stores, friend and families, highway…) access, it is important to have an individual with the experience working with Metrolinx, York region and the province to ensure the commented tra c options are re-prioritized.

Ontario Provincial Police Members representing Recruitment, Front-Line, Auxiliary and even the Aurora Detachment Summer Student attended the annual Fan Expo event in Toronto at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre between August 25th - 28th! My Commitment to You

Ward 7 has been home to me and my family for over 30 years and I share your passion for our wonderful community and Town. We are one of the most diverse and fastest growing wards in Newmarket. Many new neighbours are just coming to know our community and what it has to offer.

We value our neighbourhoods in Glenway and Woodland Hills but know there is room for improvement. I have listened to your needs, ideas and concerns.

23 HAWTHORNE LANE, AURORA

The beautiful residence of 23 Hawthorne Lane was custom built by the original owners in 1981. The family is well known in Aurora as they have been faithfully serving the local community in the past few decades. They built and owned one of the best managed retirement residences in Aurora: Chartwell Park Place Retirement Residence (formerly known as The Park Place Manor). Their hearts to serve and bless is also clearly seen in their custom built home. Every corner carries a sense of perfect peace and every detail has been handcrafted with love in mind. As their family grew over the years, they added a beautiful Florida-style sunroom, a fourth bedroom with semi-ensuite bathroom and a second floor family retreat, creating a home of 3813 sq. ft. plus a professional finished basement. Other upgraded features include spiral staircase, 2 skylights, renovated kitchen, spa-inspired bathrooms, designer wall colours and new hardwood flooring, combining the contemporary and traditional style in harmony. The backyard oasis features a salt-water pool, professional landscaping and perennial gardens for family and guests to enjoy. The premium 75’ x 139’ lot on a private cul-de-sac with circular driveway makes this home perfect for growing families who yearn for peace in the city. After raising 3 beautiful children and now with 7 beloved grandchildren, the sellers are ready to move on to their next journey. They would like the next family to enjoy this Blessed Home and may the legacy of love continue.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Ahhhhh the FALL … the change in seasons means cooler nights, cozy sweaters, and a change of scenery… not just outside, but inside your home as well! From downsizing and decluttering to redesigning and redecorating, October can be the perfect time to do more than just swap out your summer wardrobe. This month’s Member Spotlight is all about helping you get ‘FRESH FALL FEELS!’

NEWFIE SISTERS

HOME STAGING & DOWNSIZING

Downsizing doesn’t have to mean you’re moving… it can apply to your wardrobe, your furniture or general ‘stuff’ you’ve collected over the years. For many, the change in seasons seems like the perfect time to tackle any or all of it! But just thinking about downsizing or decluttering can be overwhelming. That’s where the Newfie Sisters come in to help!

Owner Jen Bevin, attributes her ‘down east’ Newfie humor and honest work ethic to the success of her business. The company is also a Max Sold Auction partner and works with families, estate lawyers and anyone needing help to sell the things they’re no longer using.

Whether you’re a hoarder, looking to optimize space, or you are getting ready to sell your home, her goal is to help you achieve your goal in 10 days! When you feel overwhelmed and don't know where to start, call your Newfie Sister! www.newfiesisters.ca

ISO DESIGN HOME APPEAL SPECIALIST

Ever feel like you just can’t keep up? Between kids, activities, your career, and your house… it can be tough keeping your life as organized as you’d like! According to Nina Doiron, owner of ISO Design, the fall has always felt like the perfect time to make changes so you can feel more organized. And she has a few tips to help you get a fresh fall start!

• Do two major purges each year, one in the spring and one in the fall and make it a family affair. Get everyone to try on their clothes. If they haven’t worn something that year or it no longer fits, get rid of it!

• Bring outdoor plants that you love inside in the fall. Put them in pretty planters and containers so that you have freshness and colour throughout the dull winter months.

• Because you spend more time indoors during the fall and winter it’s important you clean your furnace filter and duct. Not only will this provide better air quality, but it will minimize the dust collecting on your furniture.

Whether it’s organizing, decorating, or staging your home, ISO Design can give you the helping hand you need for all of it! www.isodesign.ca

FIRST STEP DESIGN ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIST

If you’re thinking of doing any renovation or building project around your home, Michelle Morin of First Step Design says the fall is the perfect time to start. Morin says prepping for any job whether its big or small can take longer than people expect because of the planning and permit process involved. That’s where First Step Design steps in! The architectural design company based out of Newmarket helps homeowners acquire the town and city permits required for any renos or new builds, ensuring things get started when you want. From refreshing old design elements to improving your home layout, they work with you to plan and implement renovations while keeping you within your budget and schedule. If you’re planning a spring project, connect with First Step Design this fall! www.firststepdesign.ca

KLEIN PAINT DECORATING CENTRE

If you thought Klein Paint was just paint… think again! The decorating centre has everything from window coverings to décor and more! Yes, we’re talking blinds, shutters, draperies, pillows and of course paint, lots and lots of paint! Owner Mary Klein says autumn is the perfect time to make a few changes in your home and she has these easy tips to help you get that fresh fall look!

• Add warm layers with textiles such as a cozy wool throw

• Switch out pillows with fall colours and heavier fabrics

• Add scented candles like pumpkin or cinnamon

• Fill a vase with fall branches

• Paint an accent wall in an autumn colour

And speaking of colours… the top fall colours to include in your home this year are caramel, chocolate brown, maroon, burnt orange, mustard, emerald green, and royal purple. Finally, Klein says don’t just focus on indoors, replacing your summer planters with chrysanthemums is the perfect way to get those ‘fall feels’ outdoors as well.

On May 2nd 2022 I registered to run for re-election as your Ward 6 Councillor. The past eight years have been an honour and together we have accomplished so much. From extraordinary places and spaces like Newmarket’s First Fully Accessible Splash Pad to the bold step to support both historical and environmental protection in the purchase and development of the Mulock Park. Becoming a Bee City, establishing new by-laws to protect animals in pet stores, trees on private properties and so much more. Despite the impacts of COVID 19, we came together as a community to help each other. I am so proud of everyone for doing their best to persevere, which for many will be the hardest challenge of our lives.

WHY VOTE? Voting is the most important way to make your voice heard on the issues that concern you, your families and your community Voting gives you an opportunity to be part of decision-making that affects your life. Historically we fought for our right to vote and today sadly our turnouts are dropping. Between October 15th and 24th set an example for someone who looks up to you and respects you and encourage them to vote. It’s your right and every vote is a step in being a part of a future we can be proud of.

Thank you for your support in taking this step for re-election as your Ward 6 Councillor, I look forward to continuing the journey with you.

I’ve been a Ward 1 resident for 15 years. I've had the privilege of serving as your council representative for the last term. Being a councillor over the past four years has been more than I could have imagined and I am proud of what I have accomplished. I used challenging times to help bring the community together.

Newmarket is such a vibrant and developing town, continuing to focus on the incredible community experiences, new business and economic growth.

Ward 1 is very much a part of the changes that are here and are coming. I have and will continue to work with resident liaison groups for projects such as the Marianneville project at 600 Stonehaven, I will create a new group for proposing a ward 1 Dog park, I will continue to pursue park improvements; such as more basketball court areas in some of our smaller parks. I will create community ward 1 events which encourage us to support our local businesses, raise funds for non-profit organizations and embrace cultural diversity and inclusivity among us. I will continue to prioritize tra c calming measures ward-wide, advocacy in youth leadership, environmental stewardship and multi-use paths for connecting ward 1 to our main town attractions. Please feel free to connect with me directly to share what you would like to see more of for Ward 1.

I’m asking for your vote, to GO For Grace for another 4 years

The Abuse Hurts Annual Toy Drive

www.abusehurts.ca

Every year during the months of November and December Abuse Hurts holds a mega-toy drive for children who are spending Christmas in shelters, transition housing and other abuse-related agencies. Thousands of young children and teens receive toys and gifts every year through Abuse Hurts!

Historically, the toys have been donated to Abuse Hurts through corporate toy drives, The Dukelive.com and TTC Stuff the Bus toy drives, individual donations and even toy donation commitments from Hasbro Canada, All-Lift, Master Mechanic Newmarket, and other generous supporters. Check our website for details on our different toy drive partners and their initiatives to see how you can participate.

In most cases, Abuse Hurts asks for new, unwrapped toys, puzzles, games, or age-appropriate gift items for teens or gift cards with dollar values clearly specified. Used toys are not accepted.

Abuse Hurts also runs their Sponsor a Family toy drive during the Holiday season in which an individual, family, or business can choose to sponsor a shelter family by donating funds with which gifts for the family are purchased by Abuse Hurts.

Extra volunteers are needed to help during our toy drive to assist in organizing and distributing the donations. For more information, visit www.abusehurts.ca

Aurora’s Haunted Forest is back at Sheppard’s Bush!

I’m excited to share that Aurora’s Haunted Forest is back this year at Sheppard’s Bush and the Aurora Family Leisure Complex (AFLC). After a two-year hiatus, our ghosts and goblins are ready to get back on the trails and give you a good scare! We welcome adventure seekers and those wishing to truly experience a haunted Halloween. Aurora's Haunted Forest will be held on Saturday, October 29 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

I really couldn’t be prouder that Haunted Forest has been acclaimed as one of the Top 100 Festivals and Events in Ontario for seven years in a row. So, you definitely don’t want to miss the decorated trails and cabins for all ages to explore. There will also be a BBQ onsite and the AFLC will have Halloween-themed crafts and games available for families.

Wristbands are required to participate in the indoor activities as well as to tour the Haunted Forest trails. Event wristbands are $5 per person (ages 2 and older) and can be purchased in advance, while supplies last. This event usually sells out within the first two weeks of tickets going on sale, so don’t wait too long to purchase. You can buy tickets starting on October 7 at Town Hall, the AFLC and the Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex.

There is also limited parking around Sheppard's Bush so I would recommend you park at the AFLC and take the complimentary shuttle bus to Sheppard's Bush.

Aurora’s Haunted Forest is presented by Healthy Planet, and I want to thank them for their continued support in sponsoring the event.

For more information on Aurora’s Haunted Forest, please visit aurora.ca/hauntedforest or call 905-726-4762.

I look forward to seeing you all there!

Happy Thanksgiving

Brent, a 2022 graduate of St. Maximilian Kolbe High School in Aurora received the $100K Schulich Leaders award. On September 4th, Neighbour caught up to this impressive young man as he was packing to head off to Western University. A dedicated student, athlete and entrepreneur! Brent opened his own business "Dive In Swim School" with 3 employees and revenue in the 2021/22 season of over 25K. We asked Brent what advice he would give to other young people: "The biggest thing would be to get involved in your community. Get out and do different things. I was in sports, I ran my own business and I was part of clubs at school and all of that combined gave me the experience to not only participate, but become a leader in those activities and gain a bunch of different experiences and make connections with my peers. Instead of sitting at home watching Netflix or YouTube, get out and get involved".

Another Thanksgiving holiday is upon us. For many, this time of year means a reunion with family and friends, enjoying hearty traditional holiday foods, and remembering all the things for which we are grateful for.

During this season of gratitude, I would like to thank my family, friends, and the residents of Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill for your support and the honour of representing you at Queen's Park.

On Thanksgiving, we count our blessings for the chance to spend time with people who matter most. We may not always agree on everything, but Thanksgiving reminds us that regardless of our differences, we have much to be thankful for.

We give thanks to our brave and courageous veterans and their families, to the first responders, health care workers, educators, and community leaders who are committed to giving back.

Without their efforts and contributions, we would not be where we are today. And as long as we have something to be thankful for, we can look forward to a better tomorrow.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Indulge started back in 2013 as a way to bring happiness to others. Sharing the gift of chocolate smothered fruit with friends and family for special occasions and holidays, was my way of showing them I cared and was thinking of them.

Over the last few years Indulge became more and more popular as the word spread. I then decided that it was time to open a storefront, and after a long search, I finally found the perfect home, right in the heart of Newmarket!

Weddings, celebrations of life, hostess gifts, open houses, birthdays, holidays… chocolate smothered fruit is great for any occasion you can think of. Whether it's just for one or for a large gathering, we’ve got you covered… well, your fruit anyway!

I hope that you enjoy all of the amazing chocolate smothered goodies that we have to offer and that you share your Indulge experience with others!

Annual Christmas Kettle Campaign

Many in our community will know about our yearly Holiday Fundraiser which raises funds to support our community outreach programs throughout the year. We are thankful for the support of the many volunteers and sponsors who make this campaign possible. These donations stay right here in Central York Region, enabling us to provide services such as emergency food support, recovery & support ministries (grief, mental health, and mentoring), registered psychotherapy, Christmas Assistance Program and youth summer camp opportunities.

If you're looking to volunteer this December, please contact Angela at angela.covert@salvationarmy.ca

This fall and winter, NCC of The Salvation Army has many different programs and opportunities for our community members to get involved! Whether it is our Women’s ESL Conversation Café held every Wednesday at 11am at Northridge, our Christmas Artisan Marketplace held the morning of November 19th, or our many Christmas celebrations, including our December 3rd Christmas Family Event and our December 24th Christmas Eve Service, something is going on for everyone!

Patti Smith

What is your most memorable community moment?

Last year's street party! The street was closed and there was 70's music playing. People were so excited to come out of their homes to enjoy the music and food.

How long have you lived in the community? 30 years

If you could have dinner with one person, dead or alive, who would it be? My Mom. She made me laugh.

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you? I study a little bit of sign language.

If you were a superhero, what would your powers be, and why? It would be to get rid of COVID.

What is your most memorable community moment?

Hosting a jam packed event with Rescue Lake Simcoe Coalition where the premier promised to approve the Lake Simcoe Protection act and the crowd went absolutely bananas!

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? Beautiful Shanty Bay in Oro Medonte

What is your favourite season (winter, spring, summer, fall), and why? It’s like choosing my favourite kid, hard to pick just one! But I always look forward to cross country skiing and skating on clear ice in the winter!

If you were a superhero, what would your powers be, and why? Being able to use the force to destroy all evil!

What does being a good neighbour mean to you? To me it means accepting the colour and spice of life by being sympathetic and helpful, even to strangers. Also, it means leading by example by respecting everyone and our environment.

Frances Wai-Chi Tong

What is your most memorable community moment? Aurora Street Festival 2022! I felt so blessed to see all the people coming out together after 2+ years of separation and isolation. The pandemic taught us to cherish our community so much more!

What is your go-to local restaurant? There are so many great restaurants in the neighbourhood! If I have to pick one, I would pick CrepeStar Dessert Cafe & Bistro! They have an extensive menu and I love their coffee and crepes.

What is your favourite series to binge?

I don’t watch a lot of TV but the last one I binged on was The Chosen. Each episode brings the Bible stories to life and touches my heart deeply.

If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be? I would tell my younger self that “Frances, you are beautiful. You are precious. You are cherished. You are enough! Know your worth and never let anyone tell you otherwise!”

If you were a superhero, what would your powers be, and why?

I would like to hear people’s thoughts and see what’s in their hearts, so I can understand them more and serve them better.
