Welcome to the November edition of the Neighbour Paper! As always, we’d like to thank our community partners and the neighbourhood for helping us to build another edition filled with positive happenings, to share with you all. With Thanksgiving and Halloween behind us now, it won’t be long before the Holiday season is upon us… Here are a few reminders and things to look forward to in the month ahead:
Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues. Learn more about The Movember Foundation at Movember.com
A reminder that at 2am on Sunday, November 3rd, the clocks fall behind an hour when Daylight Saving Time ends. On Remembrance Day we honour those who gave their lives to serve our country. Wear your poppy proudly during the Remembrance period, from the last Friday in October to the end of the day on November 11th! Check out our Neighbourhood Events page for information about local Remembrance Day activities.
World Kindness Day is on November 13th. This global day promotes the importance of being kind to each other, to yourself and to the world. The purpose of this day is to help everyone understand that compassion for others is what binds us all together. This day is also referred to as Mr. Rogers Cardigan Day, and people are encouraged to express their kindness by wearing a cardigan sweater in the spirit of Fred Rogers.

Twenty year old Karate athlete Mahta Gharaei began her sports journey at age five, earned Jr. instructor black belt at twelve, and joined Team Canada in 2017. Her most notable athletic feats include WKF World Youth Cup silver, National Champion (8x medalist), 34x Provincial Champion, and multi-time Karate Ontario’s athlete of the year awardee. Most recently she earned continental Bronze at Junior Pan American Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil and competed at the WKF World Championships in Venice, Italy, where she defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina, and put up a strong fight against Iran in the second match.
Mahta is an aspiring International Human Rights lawyer, currently studying Law & Society at York University as a Dean Scholar student. In fact, helping others has always been her passion. As a Youth Ambassador for several non-profit organizations for the past 8 years, such as Operation Smile Canada, helping kids born with cleft deformities; and 360°Kids, supporting homeless and at-risk youth in York Region; she enjoys giving back to her community through advocacy and fundraising.
Karate is not the only stage Mahta has been competing on, as she’s also been in the pageant circuit for many years, from Miss Teenage Canada 2018 to Miss World Canada 2024, placing first runner-up in both and winning Miss Teen Globe International in 2020. As a champion for women empowerment and gender equality, Mahta uses her influence to build awareness about gender-based violence, recently becoming certified in self defense to teach survivors of human tra cking and DASV in local victim services. Inspired by Canadian Women & Sports, Mahta founded the “Beyond The Classroom” initiative—bridging her martial arts background and philanthropy. These motivational seminars engage girls in sports, promote self defense infusion in the York Region schools’ phys-ed curriculum, and fosters academic & athletic excellence by sharing champions’ blueprint for success “Community support means the world to me. Hearing from young athletes or students alike that I’ve inspired them, especially girls, is like a nod that I’m making a difference, that my efforts are worth-while. Parents also often give me great feedback. Now I only hope to be able to share my knowledge and continue inspiring youth to stay on track via more elementary school seminars. Teachers, if you read this, I would love to visit your school as a guest speaker. Sometimes, a slight motivation is all it takes to reduce school dropout rate, improve youth mental health, and inspire future champions. I like to lead by example.” #GoodNeighbour

Honouring Remembrance Day in Newmarket— Aurora and Supporting Our Community’s Well-being
As we approach Remembrance Day, I want to take a moment to reflect on the significance of this day in our community. Every year on November 11, we gather to honour the brave men and women who have served and continue to serve our country. In Newmarket—Aurora, and across Ontario, this day is a time for gratitude and remembrance of the sacrifices made for our freedom. I encourage everyone to take part in local ceremonies, wearing your poppy with pride, as we come together to pay tribute to those who have given so much for our freedom.

In terms of community health and support, I am proud to share several important updates. Ontario is connecting one million more women to life-saving breast cancer screening, improving access to modern healthcare facilities at LOFT Community Services, investing over $865,000 in firefighter training at Central York Fire Services, and enhancing faster emergency care services across the province. We are supporting grieving families of stillborn children with a commemorative document while removing the fees associated with the registration. Always happy to visit our local Southlake Regional Health Centre to announce funding that strengthens their ability to connect more patients to care, close to home. These initiatives mark my commitment to building our community together by ensuring we have care where and when we need it and keeping our residents safe.
As we wrap up the fall season and look ahead to the holidays, I want to invite you to join me at our annual community events:
• The Newmarket Santa Parade is taking place on Saturday, November 16
• Aurora Santa Under the Stars Parade will be held on Saturday, November 23.
These are wonderful opportunities to come together and celebrate the joy of the holiday season. Mark your calendars and bring your family for a festive time filled with holiday cheer!
I wish you all a wonderful November, and I hope to see you at one of these fantastic community events. Let’s start the holiday season together with warmth, gratitude, and community spirit.
Stay well, and as always, my o ce is here to support you. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or would just like to have a chat.
Over 500 people, including Premier Doug Ford, turned out to Newmarket-Aurora MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy's 3rd Annual Community BBQ, on September 29th! It was a beautiful day at Riverwalk Commons, filled with food, fun, and connecting with neighbours.
Mayor John Taylor, Mayor Tom Mrakas, and members of the Newmarket and Aurora town councils, joined MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy on October 3rd, as she announced that the Ontario government is investing $865,046 through the Skills Development Capital Stream to support the construction of a new fire training structure to help meet Aurora and Newmarket’s emergency response needs, and provide effective training for current and future fire and rescue responders. This project will construct a modular fire training facility unit at the Central York Fire Services Ian Laing Headquarters (Station 4-5). The main objective of this project is to increase CYFS’ fire training capacity and the number of fire prevention skills the department can train in-house.

As the leaves begin to fall and we feel the first signs of winter, we take time to commemorate Remembrance month. Countless Canadians gave their lives fighting for the freedom that we have today. We thank and support those who have served, past and present.
I know it has been an eventful year. At home and abroad we have seen many upheavals and catastrophic events. We are witnessing a dynamic and fiery world with many conflicts. Our strength, as Canadians, is in our ability to come together at di cult moments and stand united as one country with values like fairness, compassion, and understanding binding us. Global upheavals from pandemics and wars to climate catastrophes require us to do more. As your representative in Parliament, I have always been cognizant of the fact that progress is a never-ending journey often beset by challenges but one that must be continually pursued for all of us to not only survive but thrive. Going backwards is not an option.
I want to take this opportunity to touch upon the work our government has been doing in Parliament. Despite attempts from the opposition to derail and even stop progress, the Liberal caucus has been delivering results for Canadians. Results like dental care: Over 4,000 families in Aurora, Oak Ridges, and Richmond Hill rely on the Canadian Dental Care Plan for affordable coverage. Results like pharmacare: With the passage of the new Pharmacare Act, every Canadian will have access to affordable medications like insulin and safe family planning with contraceptives accessible to people across the country. Results like greater affordability: Inflation has come down to 1.6 percent from over 8 percent a year ago and interest rates continue to fall. Results like bending the curve on climate change: with emissions down, we see the impact of the price on the pollution program.
Pierre Poilievre has repeatedly proven that he is in not capable of leading in these challenging times. His reckless policies and rhetoric and his questionable behavior are a warning to us all. There is too much at stake. Comprehensive public health care including medication and dental care is at stake. Childcare and support for families and seniors are at stake. Even the future of our green spaces and wildlife is at stake. Make no mistake, progress is on the line. In times like these we need an experienced and responsible government that believes in investing in Canadians and our future, to ensure that that progress continues. Partner:
Auto theft is down 19% in Ontario—action like this is keeping our community safer in AORRH.
The Pharmacare Act is now law – we are working with provinces to sign agreements so they can provide affordable access to medications like insulin and contraceptives.
has dropped to 1.6% in September 2024, down from 8.1% in June 2022 – and interest rates are likely to continue to fall –the economy is improving.
Over 4,000 families in our riding are now receiving dental care through the Dental Care Plan—Thanks to all the dentists and hygienists who are providing this care.

I’m l k g f my F e r Home
I'm Teddy! I have been diagnosed with a portosystemic shunt, a congenital condition where an abnormal connection between veins causes blood to bypass the liver. As a result, I require medication three times a day to help manage the condition until I'm old enough for surgery. In my short life, I have already gone through many medical tests from a network of specialists. After surgery, I will need to follow a lifelong special diet and have my liver values regularly monitored. Despite these challenges, my spirit is full of joy. I'm an adventurous, happy puppy who is looking for a family ready to embrace my zest for life and help me through my medical journey.

I'm Cranberry, a sweet girl that is as charming as they come! I have overcome a tough start in life. Now that I'm at Dog Tales, I'm finally discovering what it means to be a happy, carefree dog. Like many Cocker Spaniels, I have some allergies, but they are well-managed with a special vegetarian diet. I also require daily eye drops to help prevent glaucoma, a condition common to my breed. I'm seeking a patient and loving family who will give me the time and space I need to fully blossom. I would do best with an experienced, confident owner who understands that trust takes time and is willing to show me that not everyone will cause me harm. Could you be the perfect match for me?
Hello! My name is Maggie. I'm a 13 year old Flat-Coated Retriever, and my birthday is coming up on November 11th! My Grammie named me after a Rod Stewart song, "Maggie May". My mom says I'm the smartest dog she has ever had and I believe her! I'm a typical Aquariusassertive, clever and confident. I love apples, raspberries, blueberries and turkey, and I get fed first...always. I even have a bed in the kitchen! We walk 5km every day with my brothers, I have a friend named Gus, and I'm told that Purple is my colour. Life is Good!
Hey there... My name is Henry! I'm a 5 year old Golden Retriever and my birthday is on January 4th. I am Capricorn - incredibly loyal, persistent, and sometimes stubborn. My colour is aqua blue. You could throw the tennis ball all day and I won't complain; the pink Penn tennis balls are my favourite! My Mom adores me and calls me the Love Bug. I give great big juicy kisses, have a friend named Gus, and I'm constantly covering for my bad boy little brother Gordie. I love raspberries, and get fed second in my house. We walk 5km with my brother and sister everyday and I love stopping for a wee visit at the Sweet Store on Timothy Street.
Hey! My name is Gordon, but everyone calls me Gordie. I'm a 3 year old English Golden Retriever, born on May 17th. I'm the baby in the family. I was named after a couple of solid Canadians; Downie & Howe. I'm a Taurus - strong and bull-headed. I am very friendly, although you may not know that from my behaviour, but you can just ask my good friend Gus - he'll tell ya! My colour is lime green, and my favourite toy is my orange ball that gets filled with little treats. I love blueberries, raspberries, and extra crispy bacon. In my house, I always get fed last. I enjoy the sprinkler on a hot day, but I'm afraid of pools. I'll practically do anything for kisses... except go in water that's deeper than my knees.
Hey friends! My name is Angus, but my good friends call me Gus. I'm just a little guy - a Westie/Cairn mix, and I will be 16 years old on February 25th, 2025. My family adores me and I adore them. I also love treats! I am very talented. In my younger days I would do many tricksfor treats of course. The family favourite was always when I'd rollover and play dead, just like right out of a bad B 70's movie. I enjoy sitting on a patio with my Dad. When the family vacations, I stay with my good friends Maggie, Henry & Gordie.

This large house (shown here shortly after its construction) at the north-west corner of Main Street and Davis Drive is known as the Charles Denne House. It was built by Charles Denne, a businessman who operated a food packaging plant and pickle factory in Newmarket. The palatial residence reflects the success and stature of the Denne family in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century Newmarket.
Charles’ father, Vincent Denne, the patriarch of the family, arrived here in 1854. He would construct a massive Victorian styled residence on what is now Bayview Parkway (now demolished - where the Region of York building is now located). He had previously operated a butcher shop on Main Street, which was destroyed in the fire of 1870, before going into the milling business.
Constructed in 1904, it was built in the Edwardian-style of architecture, with some characteristics of the Queen Anne style as well. Built of red brick, it sits on a limestone foundation and contains limestone sills, reflective of the fact that Newmarket was now capable of bringing in such fine stone by rail for its wealthier residents. Massive two-storey bow windows also adorn the south and east facades of the home. Originally, it had a slate roof and the one-storey addition to the west was apparently an afterthought, accommodating a separate staircase for the staff.
Today the house is a designated historic site under the Ontario Heritage Act, surviving the recent expansion of Davis Drive and the construction of the rapid transit way. One of the few remaining examples of Edwardian style residential architecture in Newmarket, it is a true asset to our town’s built heritage.
A vibrant community we all enjoy
The end of the year is full of opportunities to spend time with family and friends and come together as a community.
The Candlelight Parade Carol Sing on Main Street, along with the Santa Claus Parade, are two great back-to-back opportunities to dive into the holiday spirit on November 15 and 16. Then on November 29, the magic continues when we light up the Winter Wonderland in the Riverwalk Commons and kick off Frozen Fridays – the weekly skating party with a DJ and live performers that takes place Friday evenings through December at the Riverwalk.
Our community thrives, in part, because of its strong local economy. As we head into the busiest shopping season of the year, keep in mind that choosing to shop locally has a powerful impact. Newmarket businesses offer everything from this year’s must-have gifts to unique items for the hard-to-buy-for on your list and shopping with them strengthens Newmarket’s prosperity.
Another key component of our community is the compassion of the people who live here. As we enjoy the season, let’s also remember those in need. There are many ways to support those less fortunate in our community at this time of year. Many charities, churches, grassroots community groups, and local schools, are collecting food, toys, and personal items to distribute around the community and make the spirit of the season more evenly felt.

Each year the Town of Newmarket undertakes a detailed budgetprocess to ensure we are meeting the needs of our community now and in the future. We engage the community to get valuable input.
The Goal:
Yard waste is collected bi-weekly until December. Do not exceed 50lbs per container and place at the curb by 7 a.m. Don’t sweep leaves onto the road, this can cause flooding.
Edge your sod and ensure all landscape features are at least 18 inches from the sidewalk to limit damage to your property during sidewalk snow plowing.
To find the balance between keeping municipal taxes low, while investing in Town infrastructure, preparing for the future and maintaining the high level of services that make Newmarket a top place to live in Canada.
Get involved:
• Tune into upcoming virtual and in-person Council meetings on: November 11, December 2 and December 9 at 1 p.m.
• Follow the Town’s social media channels to engage in the 2025 Budget and for chances to win gift cards to local businesses. Learn
Snow is coming, and Newmarket is prepared. Plowing begins when there is more than 6cm of snow. It can take up to 16 hours to plow 624km of roads and 364km of sidewalks.
Winter parking rules are now in effect until April 15, 2025. Do not park on the street overnight (between 2 a.m. to 6 a.m.) or you risk getting a $100 ticket. Regular parking restrictions still apply.
Hosting guests overnight? You can park in 6 Town parking lots overnight with a FREE parking permit. Vehicles must be moved by 7 a.m. the next day.

Tip 1: Understand what caregiver burnout is
If you’re providing unpaid physical and emotional support to someone — from cleaning to cooking to taking them to doctor’s appointments — that’s caregiving. Over time, caregivers can reach a state of emotional, mental and physical exhaustion known as caregiver burnout.
Tip 2: Research your loved one’s condition
If your spouse or senior parent has dementia, learn as much as you can about the type of dementia they have. You’ll understand how physical changes in the brain affect how they respond, so you can provide better assistance and learn not to take challenging behaviours personally.
Tip 3: Seek out support
Talking with other caregivers offers an opportunity to vent, recharge and find local resources. You may find it particularly helpful to find a caregiver support group focused on your loved one’s health condition.
Tip 4: Take a moment for mindfulness Meditation, mindfulness exercises, yoga, walking and other stress-busting activities can help offset some of the mental and physical health impacts of caregiving.
Tip 5: Know when more help is required
If you’re feeling overwhelmed and your aging spouse or parent’s needs are increasing, the safest option may be to research different options, including private-pay retirement residences with Assisted Living, and government-subsidized long-term care homes.
There is great peace of mind in knowing that you’re supporting both yourself and your loved one with compassion, whether it’s through a short Amica respite stay or a permanent move to senior living. www.amica.ca/aurorapromenade

A Thank You to Canada’s Veterans
The 3rd annual Run For Newmarket happened on October 13th, this year raising funds for Southlake Foundation. In partnership with AMYA (Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association), this family friendly charity run event offered a 1km walk, as well as 3km or 5km runs. Thank you to all who participated!
In Canada, between November 5 and 11, we honour Veterans Week – a time for us to remember the sacrifice of the brave men and women who have served Canada past and present.
Remembrance Day was first observed in 1919, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month – one year after signing the Armistice Agreement that ended World War 1. Back then it was called Armistice Day, but in 1931 the federal government passed a bill changing the name to Remembrance Day.
Like many Canadians, before and after us, my family’s path to this country was paved by war. I was born in the Netherlands, but we left shortly after the Second World War and came to a nation that has always welcomed refugees fleeing the devastation of far-flung conflict.
How does one pay their respects or say ‘thank you’ to those who paid the ultimate price defending our values and freedom, and protecting those in need? We remember their sacrifice, defend the values for which they fought, and tell their stories so generations will remember those brave men and women.
As I reflect on Remembrance Day 2024, I will do so with gratitude, respect, and love for a nation, and for the brave men and women of Canada’s armed forces. And I will think of my parents and siblings, and a life changed by the courage and sacrifice of so many young Canadians.
Lest we forget. Nous nous souviendrons.

“Rose of Sharon has a positive impact on those who attend, as we are all vulnerable, young mothers who need some kind of guidance or help. We are extremely grateful for any support that you give to our young parents during this holiday season. Thank you for showing our families that they are not alone.
On this day of remembrance, let us take a moment to reflect on the sacrifice and acts of service from those who stood on the frontlines for the protection of our freedoms. They prepared for duty across generations, having left behind their family, home, and the comforts of everyday life. Many never returned, making the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.
Their bravery in the face of danger and their dedication to the values of peace and humanity we share as Canadians reminds us of the price that has been paid for our freedom. It does not stop in history books. It goes on with the stories of veterans and the memorials marking their resting places.
But today we also remember those who are still serving. Their commitment has secured the freedoms we cherish, and their service is deserving of our deepest

gratitude. Let us ensure to take two minutes of silence at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. This act is a small, yet meaningful gesture to show respect to those who have lost their lives in service, to their families, and to the veterans who live to share their impactful stories.
May we remember in gratitude, may we remember with respect, and may we remember with the hope of a peaceful future. Today and always, let us remember them. Lest We Forget.

As we approach Remembrance Day, it is a time to reflect, honour and show our gratitude to the men and women who sacrificed, served, fought and died for our freedom. It is also a time to pay tribute to the important and on-going role of those who serve our country through military service today.
On Sunday, November 10, the Aurora Legion will host its annual Remembrance Day Parade and Ceremony.
Everyone is welcome to attend. The parade will begin at 10:20 am at GW Williams High School and march south on Yonge Street to the Cenotaph for the service.
As you may already know, Aurora has always had a proud military heritage and many of the lots that now make up Aurora were granted to Loyalist soldiers who had fought in the Revolutionary War. The first military unit raised here was the York Militia, for the War of 1812. Their name was later changed to York Rangers, followed by a (mostly) final name change in 1936, when the York Rangers amalgamated with a Toronto regiment to form the Queen's York Rangers who continue to operate in Aurora today.
Since those early days, hundreds of Aurorans have volunteered to serve in defense of our land and values. They assisted in the Fenian Raids (1866), the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902), WWI, WW2, and the war in Afghanistan where they served in both support and front-line roles. The Queen's York Rangers have maintained their presence in Aurora throughout this time, calling the Armoury at Town Park their home until 2012 when they moved to Industrial Parkway South.
As you drive or walk around Town this month, I encourage you to look for the Aurora Legion’s Veteran Banners that hang from the lampposts on Yonge Street in our historic downtown and along Wellington towards Bayview Avenue. What a wonderful way to continue to honour our veterans and share Aurora’s history.
Lest we forget.
On September 30th, the Town of Aurora staff gathered at Town Hall to raise the Every Child Matters flag, as a symbol of the town’s solidarity with Indigenous communities, as well as a symbol of their commitment to working toward meaningful and lasting reconciliation. Later that day, the Town of Aurora honoured the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation at Aurora Town Square, with a ceremony and community gathering, led by Anishinaabe Grandmother Kim Wheatley, Elder Pat Floody, Ancestral Knowledge Keeper Raiden Levesque and Spoken Word Poet Sarah Lewis.

“Holiday gift giving that truly gives back to the community. Once again, Oakridge Fashions is getting ready to embark on its heartfelt mission called The Giving Shop. A store within a store, The Giving Shop is a specially curated assortment of beautiful gifts from around the world. Best of all, 100% of the proceeds from sales are donated back into the community.
“We are really excited for the 2024 Giving Shop,” says Deb Clark, Owner, Oakridge Fashions. “This year, the range of gifts is more extensive than ever with a special men’s collection, cheerfully chosen and well-priced gifts for friends, neighbours and family as well as the 3rd edition of the “Mischief Mice” children’s book and matching mice tree ornaments. We have literally travelled afar to find some unique gifting items for everyone’s gift list. The stocking stuffer selection is particularly fantastic this year!”
“Last year, more than $20,000 was raised through The Giving Shop and donated to six incredible non-profit organizations. This year’s recipients are: The Alzheimer Society of York Region, CHATS, Southlake Regional Healthcare, The Aurora Food Pantry, Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Scholarships, and Marquee Theatre Productions.
Maggie`s Community Living Central York (CLCY) journey started in 1998 with our Employment Strategies Program, she participated in skill development courses before landing a career at Metro in 2003. Maggie has continued to work at Metro since and is incredibly proud of her position there. Last year Maggie celebrated her 20-year tenure, and Metro showed their recognition by honouring her with a milestone pin. In 2006 Maggie`s involvement with CLCY grew when she determined to transition out of her family home and venture out on her own, with the help of our Supported Independent Living Program (SIL). The SIL team supported Maggie to secure housing and develop life skills necessary for living independently.
Maggie has been extremely successful living on her own within her York Region community. She is known as a fabulous neighbour, the type to bring your bins to the top of your driveway on a windy day and greet you warmly in the morning. Maggie is also an active member of her community; she attends church every Sunday and is the first to volunteer for any community events or fundraisers. Maggie is also a longstanding member of the Special Olympics, gaining numerous awards in both swimming and baseball. Maggie is a source of inspiration to us all, for her incredible determination to always do the right thing, and for her unwavering positive outlook on life.
How long have you lived in the community?
Broker and Team Lead of Key Advantage
I have lived in Aurora my entire life! I grew up on Delayne Drive and went to Our Lady of Grace. My family loved the trail system through that NorthWest Quadrant. When I was a teenager, we moved over to the Highlands, where I now live with my 3 kiddos! It has been great watching the community transform over time and grow into such a vibrant place to call home.
What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?
I am an outdoors enthusiast, and I am not just talking sipping wine on patios. Skiing and golf are my seasonal recreational hobbies, but I love spending time hiking and camping. I have applied to trek 100 kilometres through the jungle of Cambodia, with no comforts of home, to raise money for the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation.
Where is your favourite place to go in the community?
Shepherds Bush! It is an Aurora gem - the walking trails are great. My kids love running and exploring in the forest there and checking out some of the cool teepees, as well as the exercise stations. It is right in the centre of town, but you feel connected with nature. Key Advantage set up a rock garden there for spreading positivity and kindness during the pandemic and it is still thriving! It is a great place to have a walking meeting or just to go and relax.
