NEIGHBOUR COVER STORY
Serena Thompson and Lighthouse Learning and Development Centre
The Lighthouse Learning and Development Centre was created by Serena for her son Daniel. Her belief was and continues to be that every child has the potential to do and be something great regardless of any challenges they may face. The Lighthouse understands that in order for children to be given the opportunity to reach their full potential, they need to be taught in a way they understand by a team that believes in them and their amazing and unique abilities. We believe that differences are not just to be accepted, but embraced. We take great pride in the individualized program that we create for each and every child and are continuously assessing and changing learning plans as children grow and achieve goals. We greatly depend on the involvement of parents and other disciplines to form a multi-disciplinary team to ensure maximum growth and prosperity from each child.
As a registered and inspected private school with the Ministry of Education and approved Ontario Autism Program provider, we accept children from two years of age up to twenty-one for grade 12 - credit-bearing courses, both in a small group and a 1:1 setting.

Children with autism have unique barriers to learning, they are not incapable of learning. Our children just need a place where they are free to be themselves, are taught to love themselves and are encouraged to be better for themselves every day. We strive to be "that place" for our children.
We are currently accepting registrations. www.lhldc.com.

Elections are a time for all of us to reflect on what has been accomplished over the past four years and look ahead to making Newmarket an even better place.

Despite the demands of the pandemic, we made great progress this past term and, with the election behind us, I can't help but be excited about what we will do in the next four years.
Since 2018, we created a plan for the Mulock park, accelerated the expansion of ultra-high-speed internet throughout Town, partnered with York University, TreeFrog and the Chamber on a business accelerator, became the first municipality to permanently post a land acknowledgment on its town hall, supported the creation of the first Black community centre in the Region, preserved more than 80 acres of sensitive land, and opened the new state of the art Skatepark at the Magna Centre –to name just a few of the things we’ve accomplished together.

In the next term, among other things, we will complete the Mulock park, renovate the Mulock house, with an AGO satellite art gallery – the first one outside of Toronto –build a new tennis centre, introduce new eco homes and more affordable housing, connect more of our trails and parks with a new trail the length of Mulock Drive and open the Region’s first boutique hotel on Main Street.
There is much to look back on with pride and even more to look forward to with excitement. Partnerships are our path to excellence. Together we will ensure Newmarket remains one of the best communities in Canada.

Arden Krystal, President & CEO of Southlake Regional Health Centre, was joined by Dawn Gallagher Murphy, MPP for Newmarket-Aurora and additional leaders in healthcare for a funding announcement on October 14th. Southlake Regional Health Centre is receiveing an investment of up to $4.6 million as part of the Ontario government’s continuation of health human resources program funding. This funding will support the hospital to strengthen its workforce by hiring and training staff to meet the

On September 24th Neighbour Media was invited to the Holland Landing Seventh-day Adventist Church to cover their annual Leaders Appreciation Day! What we didn't expect was that Neighbour Media was selected to be one of the recipients. We were honoured to be recognized as a leader in the community that embraces positivity and elevates others. Along with local school teachers, school principals, volunteers, the Mayor of EG and members of EG Council, we were presented with a certificate of appreciation. Pastor Fray lead a wonderful service of inspiration followed by song and meal that we all enjoyed together. A very special shout-out to Lisa, the Community Service Director, for organizing such a special event.

Winter is on its way! Due to the change in seasons, we desperately need gently used winter clothing (including outer-wear and accessories like hats, mitts, scarves) that are not stained or ripped for men, women and children.
Donations of new socks and underwear are greatly appreciated as well. Even though our clients come in and pick out their own clothing, we also send bulk orders to agencies in Hamilton and First Nations, among others.
We also always need household items and small appliances that are in good condition, plus toiletries, such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, shampoo/conditioner, soap and personal hygiene products. Diapers are also always in demand.
A quick reminder for supporters that we need new, unwrapped toys or gift cards for the holiday season. Gifts for mothers are also appreciated as we always include one with every outgoing toy order.
You may want to ‘Sponsor a Family’ – this is a program we run during the holiday season in which an individual or corporation can choose to sponsor a specific family. You get to choose the size and ages of family members that you would like to purchase gifts for. Please go to our website to find out how to donate items or sponsor a family.

We thank you in advance for helping to make this holiday season a much brighter one for many survivors who are struggling.

Letter from MAYOR MRAKAS

Getting ready for the most wonderful time of the year I want to start off by thanking the residents of Aurora for giving me the the opportunity to serve as their mayor for another four years. I am committed as ever to working closely with members of council, Town staff and the entire community to help ensure Aurora remains one of the best places to live, work and raise a family.
With the election now behind us – and Halloween as well!! –we’re entering one of my favourite times of the year.

And here in Aurora, we have a number of exciting events in store for the holiday season.

First, on Saturday, November 26 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. we will be having our Santa Under the Stars Parade, which will travel southbound along Yonge Street from Orchard Heights Boulevard to Murray Drive. This night-time parade is full of magic, with beautifully decorated floats, incredible marching bands and a few special guests, including the Jolly man-in-red himself.

The Salvation Army will be picking up food donations and letters for Santa along the route before the parade begins. This event is perfect for all ages and is sure to get you into the holiday spirit.
Then, from December 2 to 4, as well as December 9 to 11, I invite you to visit our incredible Christmas Market, featuring dozens of vendors selling crafts and seasonal goodies. There will be hands-on workshops, activities, entertainment and of course another appearance from Santa himself. The market runs each day from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
I hope to see you around Town at some of these family-friendly, festive holiday events.

Congratulations Delmanor Aurora onGrease was the word on October 6th at the Royal Venetian Mansion, where the community gathered for the Annual Dancing with Easter Seals Stars Aurora/Newmarket event. It was a memorable evening of glitz, glam and entertainment!

Over 500 people attended the 1st Annual Corn Roast Family BBQ hosted by Dawn Gallagher Murphy MPP - Aurora/Newmarket! This years event was held at Riverwalk Commons and included food, face painting, family photos, gift bags, music by George St Kitts and one on one conversations with MPP-Gallagher Murphy!
Lest we forget

Building our community together is my top priority. On Sunday October 16th I was joined by over 500 residents, volunteers, local vendors, Central York Fire Services and George St Kitts at Newmarket’s Riverwalk Commons to help me kick off my first annual family BBQ and Corn Roast. In addition, we also collected over ten boxes of non-perishable food donations for the Newmarket Food Pantry. It was an amazing community event, and I would like to thank everyone who attended.

It has been my pleasure to attend numerous community events over the past several weeks, including the Truth and Reconciliation Day event held at Fairy Lake, the Budo Without Borders Opening Ceremonies at Brad Jones Karate, the Run for Newmarket, as well as the Inn from the Cold Victorian Tea held at the Aurora Armoury, the Hillary House Victorian Tea and the Francophone flag raising event held at the Aurora Town Hall.
November 11th marks Remembrance Day and I would like to honour our service members, remembering the sacrifice they have made for us all.

Constituency week is November 7th – November 11th, 2022. Please feel free to connect with me over this week and in the coming months. I want to hear from you, our great community members of Newmarket – Aurora, and I look forward to collaborating with you to build our community together!

COBS Bread Aurora Gateway raised $4,500 for Welcoming Arms on October 19th during their "Raising Dough" event. Thank you COBS Bread Aurora for continuing to support our community! Welcome Table is a program offered through Welcoming Arms. Every Wednesday night they serve members of our community that are experiencing food insecurity a hot meal. This very generous donation will provide a lot of meals to those in our community that need help.
Meet the Owners of COBS Bread Aurora Gateway
Bhavin and Nidhi are residents of Aurora who own the local COBS Bread bakery.
Around July of 2018, we started looking into joining COBS. I was looking at different franchise bakeries, but picked COBS because of their philosophy to bake everything fresh and donate unsold products. Being part of the community is important to us. We opened our doors in August of 2019 and our commitment to the community is that whether you're picking up a scratch-loaf of bread for your family or a treat for yourself, you can always be sure that the day you walk into the bakery is the same day we baked it. You will also never have to worry about added preservatives in our bread.

Through our end of day giving program, we donate all unsold products to local charities. My inbox is full of requests for donations from charities that this bakery previously supported. I am continuing those partnerships and plan to include some other organizations as well. I picked COBS Bread because of the importance they put on supporting the community, so it’s very important to me that COBS Bread Aurora Gateway is known as the Community Bakery.
If you were a treat or loaf from COBS, which one would you be and why? [no hesitation] Double Chocolate Scone! It’s full of chocolatey goodness and topped with sweet vanilla glaze. I think that describes me, full of goodness! - Bhavin

Every year on November 11, Canadians pause in a moment of silence in remembrance of the Canadians who have served and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace.

Our country will always owe a debt of gratitude for the tremendous commitment of all Canadian veterans, and the government will continue to ensure all veterans are supported.
While we strive for peace through international cooperation and peace-keeping forces, we are aware of the need to be prepared to defend our country and our allies from unprovoked attacks. Peace is our goal and our wish is that our women and men in uniform never see combat.
Canada recently confirmed collaboration and commitment to protect the Juno Beach site in France. We are making joint investments to secure the long-term protection of Juno Beach and the use of the site for commemorative purposes. Canada’s collaboration with France will support the Juno Beach Centre’s

work to honour the achievements and sacrifices of all who have fought for freedom and democracy.

Throughout Remembrance Week, I encourage you to reflect on the strength, bravery, and dedication of our veterans and all those who have sacrificed their lives in service to Canada. To the heroes who have risked so much to protect our country, our values, and our freedoms: We thank you and are forever grateful for all you have done for all Canadians and people around the world.
I encourage all residents of Aurora- Oak Ridges -Richmond Hill to attend a local Remembrance Day Ceremony. You may contact the Aurora Royal Canadian Legion Branch #385 or Richmond Hill Royal Canadian Legion Branch #375 for more details.

Thank you to all our veterans and to all those who continue to serve Canada.

Hi, my name is Billy! I know I may look like a bucket of popcorn, but I am actually a pug! I love my mom a lot, even though she dresses me up like this sometimes... #PugCorn

Bella
Meow, I'm Bella! I am just over 2 years old and having been raised with dogs, I tend to think I am a dog myself. Plus I am much better at playing fetch than the dogs are...

Rennie
I'm Rennie and not only do I think, but I KNOW that I am the queen of the house! I like to rearrange things for my humans, including this cutting board... which ended up on the floor after this photo, as I thought it would look better there.

Coco & Max
I'm Coco, (blue harness) and I am 18 months old! I'm Max (red harness) and I am 13 months old! We both really enjoy playing with our toys and watching squirrels/chipmunks through the patio doors. But best of all, we just love being taken out for walks, as we are normally indoor cats.

Birdie
Hi, I'm Birdie! I am a 2 year old springer spaniel. I am happiest off-leash in the fields chasing birds. I also love to go swimming and can’t believe swimming season is over! I am the sweetest, most loving and friendly doggo and really wish my parents would get me a friend.

Thanks to the support of community sponsors, advertisers and over 300 ticketholders, The Canadian Federation of University Women Aurora/Newmarket’s premier Home & Garden Tour 2022 was an incredible success. CFUW treasurers Margaret Blanchett and Donna Wright were delighted to present Fulvia Cantarutti, president of the Charitable Trust with a cheque for $27,000 for the Charitable Trust’s scholarship fund at the club’s AGM on September 20th.

CFUW Aurora/Newmarket Outreach assists those in need within our broader community with the goal of enriching lives and empowering women and girls. The committee supports various groups with funds raised from ra es, a virtual film festival and donations from members. Recently, CFUW Outreach Committee members Carolynn Schiller and Shiela Ingle presented Rose of Sharon with a cheque for $2000 to support two graduating students who are pursuing post-secondary education. Each student was given $1000 each to purchase a computer or software as needed for their program.

Congratulations to all the golfers and sponsors that supported the Rose of Sharon Services for Young Mothers golf tourney. The day was a huge success! The goal of $30,000 was crushed, raising over $50,000 that day! Celebrity guest John Catucci was also there motivating the golfers, selling ra e tickets and raising awareness. A special shout-out to title sponsor Picone Real Estate!

Scotiabank branches and Business Line Partners in the Greater Toronto area, along with the Women in Leadership Employee Resource Group, united in an opportunity to give back to the community. Together, they collected diapers, formula and other necessities, in time for Thanksgiving. This donation initiative will support the families that rely on the Rose of Sharon agency for assistance. The response was overwhelming - delivering over 7 vehicles full of items that filled the space at Rose of Sharon, an estimated value of over $12,000!

How long have you lived in the Community?
We moved here for work a little over 17 years ago. We love the small town feel, next door to big city options.
What is your most memorable community event?
The annual Newmarket Optimist Club Breakfast with Santa. The event attracts families from across town to kick off the holiday season with games, activities, a pancake breakfast – and of course a visit from Santa and Mrs. Clause!
What is your go-to local restaurant?
We absolutely love anything on Main Street, but I would say we probably end up at the Ground Burger Bar more often.
What is your favourite holiday to celebrate?
I have 2 favourites – Halloween and Christmas. I tend to go a little crazy on the decorations for both and am always adding something every year.
How do you give back or pay it forward in your Community?
I am a member of the Newmarket Optimist Club. We are a not-for-profit organization that raises funds to support youth related programs and initiatives in the Town of Newmarket. It’s an amazing group of people doing amazing work for children and youth in our Community.
How long have you lived in the community?
My family has been proud to call Aurora home for 32 years with no plans to leave anytime soon!
What is your favorite season?
I love the summer – weekends at the cottage, boat rides, the Aurora Farmers Market, Ontario grown strawberries, corn on the cob, concerts in the park, reading a good book on the deck and patio dinners.

What is your favorite holiday to celebrate?
Christmas! I love the time spent with family and friends, decorating, driving around the Aurora neighbourhoods looking at all the lights and finding that perfect gift for someone and watching them open it.
Netflix or a night out?
I’m always up for a night out!
What is your most memorable community moment?
It’s always the Aurora Chamber Street Festival, but this year in particular. The return of the festival was amazing, everyone was excited and the buzz on the street was incredible.
