NEIGHBOUR COVER STORY

Anne-Marie Million

Chef & Owner of A Million Mouthfuls Catering

• www.neighbourmedia.ca @neighbourmedia

10 years ago, Anne-Marie transformed her passion for cooking into a small, family-run catering business. While still working full-time in the hospitality industry, she spent her evenings and weekends catering family functions, weddings, and community events. With the love and support of her clients, she felt blessed to see her small business grow - simply by word of mouth. Having always been deeply connected to the communities in Newmarket and surrounding areas, it is important to her to create curated and beautifully presented, personalized and unique experiences to all of her clients. In 2021 she retired from her full-time job to allow her to dedicate herself to her dream of operating her business full-time. Due to the pandemic, she pivoted her business to offer curated food boxes, handcrafted trays and lavish charcuterie boards by delivery, in order to continue pursuing her passion of cooking while being able to safely supply clients with food to celebrate occasions with. Once in-person events were allowed again, her team juggled both socially distanced offerings and private/corporate events.

“It’s in my blood” - her passion for cooking, bringing joy and comfort through food and giving back to the community was instilled in her as a child from her parents and grandparents. The roots of her passion for food and her business run deep in Newmarket. Her priority is to buy from and collaborate with other small local vendors, supporting each other wherever they can. She has always been a big supporter of nonprofits and community initiatives. Some of the ways that A Million Mouthfuls gives back is by serving monthly hospice lunches, offering food pantry support, sponsoring community events through food/service donations, gift certificates or preferred pricing.

Keep an eye out for what Anne-Marie has cooking in the coming months…

Harry Naghavi LOVES Newmarket. After living in Toronto for 18 years, Harry and his wife Renate moved to Newmarket in 1996, bought a little bungalow on Vincent St. and raised a family. With many years of experience in various trades, Harry felt very comfortable in dealing with all kinds of people, so he jumped into the real estate industry - with both feet in - in 2005. Since then Harry has helped numerous families and businesses achieve their goals in both residential and commercial real estate. Harry is a fun individual to be around, but he is also a deep thinker. He shares a bit of his philosophy: "I live my entire life, day in and day out, based on a SINGLE word, and that word is RESPECT. Without it, you can't have a good friendship, a relationship, or do good business! It's a simple fact that everyone wants to be treated with respect, yet many people forget this basic rule when it comes to dealing with others. To me, doing business is never more important than having respectful interactions with other human beings."

Having done all kinds of real estate deals in multiple Ontario locations, Harry will gladly travel to show a cottage, list a horse farm, or bring clients to visit condos in the big city. His mission is to bene t clients who approach him for information and service. If you want to deal with a cheerful, and RESPECTFUL realtor, give Harry Naghavi a call at 416-716-3112 or email him at harrynaghavi@gmail.com.

You'll be glad you did.

Since 1997, we’ve been helping women look and feel their best. Carrying an excellent selection of unique, high-quality, and affordable brands, we are committed to providing women with a standout experience from the moment they walk through our doors.

Our sales associates – most of whom have been with us for more than fifteen years – are highly knowledgeable about style, and are motivated to connect customers with clothing that not only flatters, but also makes them feel as beautiful and polished as the cover of a fashion magazine! We offer this same quality of service to our online shoppers through our virtual fitting room, which helps them identify their body shape and the type of clothing best suited for it.

Our stock has been carefully curated with more than just style in mind: we give great consideration to where our customers might wear it, what they’ll be doing, and how it will fit and be cared for. This enables us to dress every body, for any occasion – no matter its shape, size, or age.

Any Predictions for 2023?

Many people often decide to make resolutions for themselves for the New Year, and after these resolutions come the predictions for the New Year. Have you made any predictions for 2023?

The skill of predicting involves forecasting what is believed will occur in the future. The accuracy of predictions likely is mostly based on our prior knowledge, experiences, observations and even research.

An Asian version of prediction is based upon astrological signs of the Chinese Zodiac. 2023 is the year of the Rabbit, starting from January 22nd, 2023 (Chinese New Year), and ending on February 9th, 2024 (Chinese New Year's Eve). The Rabbit is a symbol of longevity, peace, and prosperity in Chinese culture. People born in a year of the Rabbit are called "Rabbits" and are believed to be vigilant, witty, quick-minded, and ingenious. Chinese astrology predicts 2023 to be a year of hope. Here are some examples of online 2023 predictions:

• World population forecasted to reach 7,991,396,000

• World sales of electric vehicles reaches 8,546,667

• 10% of reading glasses will be connected to the internet.

• 80% of people on earth will have a digital presence online.

• The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency launches the world's first wooden satellite

• 90% of the global population will have a supercomputer in their pocket.

• The COVID-19 pandemic ends

• New study reveals potential for extending lifespan with genetically engineered, solar-powered cells

On January 26th, OPP Members attended the Silver Stick Hockey Tournament taking place at the Magna Arena in Newmarket. The Silver Stick is an annual hockey event that draws huge numbers of players from across Canada and the US. OPP and CYFS were invited to participate in this year's commnity event, providing an excellent opportunity to engage with the youth and, perhaps, plant the seed for future first responders.

A Million Mouthfuls Catering hosted "Take It Cheesy" grilled cheese Market Brewing Co. on February 9th! It was an evening of ooey-gooey delicious sandwiches, tasty homemade chips & dips, BINGO and of course - cold MB Co. brews.

Beyond Net-Zero

Howland Green Homes has made a significant impact on sustainable building in Canada by constructing the largest beyond net-zero o ce building in the country. The Wellington East Business Centre, located in Aurora, is designed to capture more renewable energy than it uses on an annual basis for the operation of the entire building. The four-storey commercial building has been built with bifacial solar technology on its roof, a first of its kind of that size, which can capture around 870,000 kilowatt hours of energy. Other sustainable features of the building include enhanced insulated concrete form construction, triple pane fiberglass Low E Argon windows, geothermal heating and cooling, high e ciency LED lighting throughout, and a water recapture system.

What's impressive is that all these features enable the building to reduce its operational energies by about 85%, an outstanding statistic that the company can confidently boast about thanks to its constant monitoring and measurement of their efforts. Furthermore, the building captures all grey water and uses it for all toilets and maintenance issues, resulting in a 92% reduction in water coming from the municipality.

The company believes that being different is key to creating real change in sustainable building, and it aims to make a significant difference in the industry. The collection of net positive energy condo o ce spaces is now available and is being sold. Those who are interested can find out more about Howland Green Homes by visiting howlandgreen.com.

Mater

Hi, I'm Mater! A 4 year old Cane Corso/ Bullmastiff mix from Niagara Falls, turning 5 in June. I was neglected due to having an irregular tail, but my mom and dad saw an ad for me and drove to pick me up and bring me to my forever loving home. I am sweet and love to cuddle. But I hate baths, being in the cold and going outside when it is raining.

Winston

Hi there - I'm Winston! My dad would describe me as an old English bulldog who is lazy, overweight, and sleeps all day. BUT he also says that I am the most loyal companion. I am 4 years old, great with kids and just want to give ALL of the kisses ALL of the time!

Archie

I'm Archie! I was originally a barn cat from Sandford, so mom and dad are not sure of my breed or birthday, but think I am about 5 months old. I love running around, playing with pom poms and being outside. I play with my big brother Mater all the time, am great with kids and hate baths!

Josie

I'm Josie! I live a great life with my family in Aurora. My mom is so kind - she is always fostering other cats to help them find homes as amazing as mine. I enjoy meeting new friends, but I'm always ready for my downtime aka Me[ow]-Time!

Kato

Woof! My name is Kato and my Auntie Ellen is taking care of me right now. My cousin Angel Bobbie was on the cover of the Neighbour Paper in December, so we decided it was time for me to be in the spotlight this month - and I'm loving it!

Blue

Meow! Hi - I'm Blue. I'm Josie's brother and I consider myself the majestic one in the family and the king of relaxation! At almost any point in the day, you can find me cuddled up somewhere cozy - enjoying life!

Letter from MAYOR TAYLOR

Events bring us together

As I walked through Winterfest last month, it was great to see the kids laughing and smiling and everyone having a great time. It made me think of how much of a leader Newmarket has become in organizing events, punching above its weight to offer a range of events throughout the year catering to residents of all ages.

From the Tim Hortons First Night to Canada Day and the TD Music Series to the Santa Claus Parade, Newmarket’s special events contribute to the cultural fabric of this town, celebrate home-grown talent, offer shared experiences, and create opportunities to bring us closer together.

Thanks to Town Staff, our partners, and the sponsors who work to make Newmarket's calendar of events a reality. Some of my favourites include the Mayor’s Levee, of course, Tim Hortons Canada Day, the Music Series, NewBarket presented by Global Pet Food, the Haunted Halloween Trail, and Santa Claus Parade.

As a Council and Town, we're responsible for maintaining roads, making sure the water flows when you turn the tap on, and the planning process, but more than that we're building a community that residents can be proud to call home – a place where people want to live, work, and build businesses. Along with our parks, trails, recreation and cultural amenities, events are a key component to doing just that.

The Year of Two Halves

I know we have not seen the end of Winter (it always snows in April), but the balmy, spring-like weather that we have been experiencing gives me hope for warmer days ahead!

I attended the Toronto Regional Real Estate Boards (TRREB) 2023 Market Outlook Housing conference in February. This year is being labelled as the year of two halves. The first half of the year homes sales are predicted to be on a relatively flat trajectory because of the lingering effects of higher borrowing costs and economic uncertainty. However, in the 2nd half of 2023 we are expecting to see a downward trend in the interest rates and some economic certainty related to our resilient Labour market.

Listing inventory will continue to be a persistent problem in 2023 and because of the low inventory we are already starting to see some bidding wars again in some of the lower price ranges with multiple offers on some properties. If predictions are correct and inventory increases in the latter half of the year, then buyers will have more choice, and this will lead to more balanced market conditions.

There were a lot of home buyers and sellers that sat on the fence last year because of the volatility of the market and the increase in interest rates. But moving into more balanced market conditions in 2023 is good news for both Buyers and Sellers.

Whether you are thinking of buying or selling. Don't hesitate to contact us if you need some advice, we are always happy to help!

Led Zeppelin is my favorite band of all time, but I was lucky to work within the music industry at a young age. I can go from classic rock, jazz and blues, old hip-hop, electronic... whatever the mood calls for.

Ariana Laxdal

How long have you lived in the community?

I have lived in Newmarket since I was 6 years old, have moved away a couple of times but always find myself back in this great community. I own a business and work for another business located right in the heart of the community.

What is your favourite food?

Italian, no doubt! If I had to choose just one specific thing though it would be caprese salad.

What is your favourite season (winter, spring, summer, fall), and why?

Summer, but fall is a close second. I love the sunshine and happiness it brings to everyone and love my time spent at the cottage and boating in the summer.

If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be? Keep pushing forward, you will find what you are meant to be doing, you will be great and your drive will help get you where you want to be.

What is your favourite holiday to celebrate?

Christmas! I love the Christmas Spirit and time spent with family and friends and am totally the person that wants to decorate for Christmas as soon as possible and leave the decorations up as long as I can.

The Journey of Compassion: Hope House Community Hospice

Please join us in celebrating our 40th year.

At Hope House, our vision is: A Community where no one journeys alone through illness or loss.

Last year Hope House supported 500 community members including those diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, their family members and people coping with the death of a loved one. The team of professional staff and dedicated volunteers continue to provide compassionate care, support and resources, at no cost, from the time of diagnosis and beyond.

As one of the first hospices in Canada and the first in York Region, Hope House has grown in response to community need to support residents of King, Aurora and Richmond Hill – in client’s homes, in the community and at two locations (Aurora and Richmond Hill). Programs include:

• In-home visiting, support and companionship

• Bereavement programs for adults, teens and children

• Wellness sessions such as yoga, mindfulness and complementary therapy for clients and caregivers.

• Day Hospice Program

• Supportive Counselling

Hope House has been so successful over the past 40 years because of the support of our community, volunteers, sponsors and donors. We couldn't have done it without you.

Help us to celebrate and to continue our support. Fundraising is key to maintaining the important services Hope House provides. Please consider becoming a sponsor, event attendee, donor or volunteer. For more information, please visit www.hopehousehospice.com/40years.

HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY

Spring Greetings from MPP Parsa

Your Member of Provincial Parliament for Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill

As winter gives way to spring, we have many occasions to celebrate hope, prosperity, and peace. During the month of March, families, friends, and neighbours will be celebrating the arrival of spring with the upcoming annual Holi Festival and Nowruz. We will also be marking St. Patrick’s Day to recognize the contributions of Irish Canadians both past and present. As we kick off this busy month, I would like to take a moment to wish all Ontarians who celebrate this special time of year, a happy St. Patrick’s Day.

March is a very exciting time of year for various reasons. It marks the end of another cold winter season with longer days and later sunsets. As we witness the seasonal changes around us, we are reminded that summer is only a few short weeks away. Known as the festival of colours, Holi marks the end of winter and honors the triumph of good over evil. As one of the most celebrated festivals in India, Holi unites people and communities with delectable dishes and colourful activities that symbolize the onset of spring.

And as many of you may know, during the month of March, millions of people celebrate Nowruz to mark the start of a new year and the day of the vernal equinox. This millennia-old celebration is also a reminder of the importance of harmony between nature and life, a symbol of renewal and rebirth. This year will also mark the second annual celebration of Persian heritage Month, a time to recognize the many achievements and contributions of Ontarians of Persian descent. I look forward to attending upcoming events throughout this month and I encourage you to stay connected by visiting michaelparsampp.ca.

The

second Non-Profit Sector Appreciation Week was celebrated from February 13th -17th. Throughout this week, MPP Michael Parsa connected with volunteers and staff members from essential charity and non-profit organizations in the riding. He visited the Aurora Legion on February 15th and presented Bonnie Robertson and Lori Hoyes with a certificate of recognition for the hardworking volunteers and staff members.

A Message from MP Leah Taylor Roy

On International Women’s Day (IWD) 2023, we are celebrating with the theme that Every Woman Counts. It is a reminder that all women, from all ages and walks of life, have a place in every aspect of Canadian society, including in the economic, social, and democratic spheres. From early trailblazers to today’s powerful agents of change, from the long journey for women’s suffrage towards equality of rights and opportunities for all, women have and continue to blaze a trail to create a better, more equal world for everyone.

Women in Canada won the right to vote just over 100 years ago and today we have just over 100 women MPs in the House of Commons, however that is about 30% of the total MPs - far less than our proportionate representation as we are over 50% of the population! There are so many challenges facing us, as a society and world, that at times women’s issues seem less important but let's recognize that with women proportionately engaged and valued in all aspects of our society, we would be in a better position to overcome them.

We are making progress in Canada. I am very proud of our new Canada wide Early Learning and Childhood education program, that will make quality child care affordable for all families, benefiting not only parents and children, but all of us.

Let’s celebrate the successful women around us while continuing to work for gender equality so that today’s young people, regardless of their gender, can reach their dreams!

Celebrating International Women’s Day Every Woman Counts!

This month we celebrate International Women’s Day. It’s a reminder that all women, from all ages and walks of life, have a place in every aspect of Canadian society.

Let’s celebrate the successful women around us, reminding today’s youth and girls that their dream is within reach

Letter from MAYOR MRAKAS

Spring is in the air!

Last month was our annual Arctic Adventure at Town Park and although we didn’t see arctic temperatures (rubber boots were definitely in order), everyone had an amazing time! I want to give a very special thanks to Neighbur for capturing these great memories. The pictures really do say a thousand words.

February 2nd was International Optimist Day! Members of Optimist International celebrate Optimist Day throughout the world the first Thursday of every February to promote their efforts in bringing out the best in youth, their communities and themselves. Neighbour Media would like to thank our friends at the Aurora Optimist Club for all they do for the youth in our community! It was an honour to be at the Aurora Town Park for the flag raising to commemorate the day.

And speaking of special events, while it is only March, Easter is right around the corner and you’ll want to plan ahead and get your tickets for our upcoming Hello Spring event on Saturday, April 8

at the Aurora Seniors’ Centre. If you’ve never attended with your kids, su ce to say you are in for a ‘hopping’ good time! For more details, visit aurora.ca/HelloSpring.

Nominations are also open for our annual Community Recognition Awards, one of my favourite events that celebrates the incredible contributions people make to our community. So, if you know an individual, group or business in Town who is going above and beyond to help strengthen Aurora, please nominate them today at aurora.ca/cra.

Lastly, March Break is almost here and I want to wish students – and many parents – an awesome week off! If you are planning a staycation, you’ll want to check out our great day camps, drop-in programs and other activities the Town has going on. For more info, check out our 2023 Winter Program guide on the Town’s website.

As always, I encourage residents and businesses to reach out to me at any time either by phone, through social media or in-person. I look forward to keeping everyone informed and engaged - #gettingthingsdone

Abuse Hurts Champion of the Month

Neighbour Media was happy to be part of this dynamic group of women and participate in the first Chamber of Commerce Women of Influence Network (WIN) lunch of 2023! A huge thanks to the host business Foxglove Design Inc. providing the beautiful space and delicious lunch! If you are in attending the next event, contact the Aurora Chamber of Commerce.

Abuse Hurts’ Champion of the Month for March is actually a wonderful couple from Newmarket, Ontario, Gary and Teresa Kruze. Both very successful business people in their own right, they have made a commitment to giving back to the community. Abuse Hurts is fortunate to have been a recipient of their time and generosity over the last 25 years. Their connection with Abuse Hurts hits close to the heart as their dedication is fueled by the memory of Gary’s brother, Martin Kruze, who was the first of many male survivors to come forward after being sexually abused at Maple Leaf Gardens. Gary served on the Abuse Hurts board for many years and Teresa has also supported the charity using her expertise in Media and Public Relations. Their contributions extend to being involved in countless fundraising and awareness initiatives. You can always see them participating in golf tournaments and attending galas but they have also emcee’d and acted as spokespersons on behalf of Abuse Hurts in many other events and media.

Teresa’s current endeavour with Abuse Hurts is in the role of producer of their upcoming Spring Fashion show on May 11 at the Newmarket Old Town Hall. Her passion and drive is helping to create an event to remember (see the Designing Hope ad in this issue). Together, Gary and Teresa continue to demonstrate a deep commitment toward abuse prevention, support for survivors, and promoting awareness. Their contributions have made a huge difference in providing a more hopeful future for many.

This past holiday season, Newmarket Desjardins Agent George Rappos gave a gift that keeps on giving. From Giving Tuesday (November 29) through December 31, he pledged to match, up to $10,000, all donations made in support of youth mental health to CMHA York Region & South Simcoe. This past spring, George Rappos, in conjunction with CMHA National / ACSM National, launched the “Insuring Our Future” fundraising campaign, also in support of youth mental health. The initiative challenged all employees of the Canadian insurance industry to donate to their local CMHA chapter. Over $56,000 was raised in this inaugural year. Rappos and the CMHA are already preparing for the launch of the 2nd Annual Insuring Our Future campaign for the spring of 2023. #GoodNeighbour
