Krissy Young, a Newmarket resident, has a strong connection to Southlake Health. When Connor and Kyle entered the world eight weeks premature on May 10, 2017, their mother, Krissy, faced one of the most challenging experiences of her life. Moments after birth, the twins were rushed to Southlake Health’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where they were placed on mechanical ventilation and incubated. It was five long days before Krissy could hold Conner for the first time, on Mother’s Day.
During their 26-day stay in the NICU, Krissy was deeply moved by the dedication, care, and compassion shown by the doctors, nurses, and therapists. The NICU team, as Krissy described it, “worked miracles,” providing not only critical medical care to the twins but also emotional support for the entire family. Krissy is incredibly grateful that Southlake Health was there when her family needed it most.

Krissy first started running in fundraising events with her sister, just before her twins’ first birthday in 2018, with the goal of giving back. She ran the Toronto marathon with her sister and donated the $13,000 she raised to Southlake Health. Determined to continue giving back, Krissy made it her mission to support Southlake Health through the Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake each year since. She formed a running team, “Baby, I Was Born to Run!!!” and has fundraised well over $100,000 to date, to support the hospital that cared for her children while they were in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Krissy is participating in Nature's Emporium Run for Southlake once again this year (for the 6th year), and she is taking on her most ambitious challenge yet—running 2.6KM every hour on the hour, for 26 hours, to honour the 26 days her twins spent in the NICU, with a goal of raising $26,000. She will begin the day before the race and complete the final 5KM with her family, friends and teammates under Southlake’s iconic bridge on April 27. Beyond running, Krissy supports NICU families in other ways. Her birth story and contact information are displayed on every isolette in Southlake’s NICU, providing reassurance and connection for parents facing similar challenges. With limited government funding for hospital equipment, Krissy continues to rally community support for Southlake Health. Whether through donations or joining her team on race day, she invites others to help ensure future families receive the same life-saving care her children did. #GoodNeighbour

For seniors, the best exercises are those that enhance strength, balance, flexibility, and cardiovascular health while minimizing the risk of injury. A well-rounded fitness routine typically includes aerobic, strength, balance, and flexibility exercises.
Aerobic exercises, such as walking, cycling, and swimming, are excellent choices for seniors as they improve heart health and stamina without putting undue strain on the joints. These low-impact activities can be adjusted to suit the individual's fitness level and can be done regularly for 20-30 minutes, several days a week.
Strength training is also crucial for seniors as it helps maintain muscle mass, which naturally declines with age. Simple exercises like bodyweight squats, leg lifts, or using resistance bands and light weights can help build strength. These exercises enhance mobility and independence, making daily tasks easier. It’s important to start with lighter weights and gradually increase the resistance.
Balance exercises are essential for fall prevention, a significant concern among older adults. Activities like standing on one leg, tai chi, or yoga can improve stability and coordination. These exercises help seniors maintain better posture and reduce the likelihood of falls.
Flexibility exercises, such as stretching or yoga, are vital for maintaining joint mobility and reducing stiffness. Gentle stretching can improve range of motion and reduce muscle tightness, contributing to overall well-being.
Before starting any exercise program, seniors should consult a healthcare provider to ensure the activities are safe and appropriate for their individual health conditions. Regular physical activity can significantly improve the quality of life and maintain independence as one ages.
At Amica Aurora Promenade, our upcoming senior lifestyles residence, we look forward to offering fitness classes every day, hitting on a variety of exercises each week. Learn more when you call Lesley or Ladi at 905-726-2220.

Newmarket you are amazing!
Wow, that was a snowy February! More than 80 cm of snow fell in Newmarket last month – mostly in the last two weeks – blanketing our community with so much snow in such a short period of time that it was a challenge to find space to put it all.
Snowstorms can be picturesque and at times frustrating. They’re also a great opportunity to witness the kindness and compassion that is the heart of this community.
I want to thank the many residents throughout Newmarket who pitched in to help their neighbours dig out, who cleared snow from around fire hydrants, and who shoveled the sidewalks around their homes. It’s heartening to know that Newmarket residents look out for one another and are quick to help when the going gets tough.
Another heartwarming example of how much Newmarket looks out for those in need was the annual Coldest Night of the Year fundraising walk, which took place at the end of February. Hundreds of people take part in this event each year and over the years it has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in support of the Inn From the Cold shelter and support services.
Thanks to the generosity of this community – through this event and a capital campaign over the last two years – the Inn will soon begin building a new housing centre on Yonge Street that will help the most vulnerable in our community transition to stable housing.
Thank you Newmarket for caring for your neighbours. Keep up the amazing work!
Ice Lounge on Main, presented by Mercedes-Benz Newmarket, was an absolute blast! Main Street was buzzing with energy as people from near and far gathered to enjoy three days packed with music, live shows, shopping, marshmallow roasting, photo ops, delicious food, and non-stop fun! The event was a perfect mix of excitement and winter wonderland vibes, with something for everyone to enjoy. From jamming out to live music to snapping Instagram-worthy shots, Ice Lounge on Main brought the community together for an unforgettable time. We can’t wait to see what next year's event has in store!
In Ontario, over 52,000 individuals with disabilities are waiting for critical services. Some have been waiting for housing for over 30 years. Community Living Central York (CLCY) provides vital support, but funding hasn't kept pace with the growing need. Your monthly gift to the can make a direct impact.
At Community Living Central York (CLCY), we see incredible transformations daily. Individuals with diverse abilities thrive in inclusive communities, achieving dreams and living fulfilling lives. We witness these successes because of unwavering support from people like you – those who believe in inclusion.
On January 27th, our community came together in a truly heartwarming way! The Newmarket Group of Artists, in partnership with the Town of Newmarket and Community Living Central York, hosted a special arts program for individuals with diverse abilities. Four talented art teachers generously volunteered their time, teaching various art techniques to individuals supported by Community Living Central York. The beautiful artwork created was showcased at Newmarket's Old Town Hall, and the closing gala was a celebration of inclusion, creativity, and community. It was a night where everyone truly belonged, as students and teachers gathered to share their passion and talent. This event was a reminder of the incredible power of art to bring people together, break down barriers, and build stronger, more inclusive communities.
We believe everyone deserves to belong. CLCY offers diverse programs and services, from supported independent living (SIL) and meaningful employment to crucial respite care and enriching community participation. These programs are lifelines, empowering individuals to reach their full potential and experience connection.
But we can't do it alone. We need your help to build an inclusive York Region. We invite you to join our Commitment Crew – a special group of monthly donors who are making a real, tangible difference.
Why monthly giving? For us, it's about partnership. Your consistent monthly gift allows us to plan for the future, ensuring the long-term sustainability of our vital programs. It allows us to focus on what matters most: supporting more individuals and their families who are in need of our supports.
And for you? Becoming a Commitment Crew member powerfully expresses your values and invests in a compassionate community. Knowing your contribution directly impacts someone's independence, well-being, and belonging brings a unique purpose. It's a small act with a huge impact.
Join us. Sign up TODAY and join our Commitment Crew. Make a commitment and join our crew. Together, we build a community where everyone belongs. Visit www.clcy.ca to donate and make your commitment today.

Hi, I'm Yum, a beautiful girl who has overcome a di cult past! Rescued from an abusive situation, I have received a thorough exam from the vet, and my severe ear infection and urinary tract infection have both been successfully treated and resolved. I am blind in both eyes due to cataracts, but that doesn’t slow me down! I get around with ease and have a loving, gentle nature. I need eye drops twice daily to manage dry eye, and this will be a lifelong part of my care. Regular grooming and ear cleanings are also essential to maintain my coat and prevent future ear infections. Despite my needs, I am an incredibly sweet and affectionate dog who is ready to bring a whole lot of joy and wiggles to my new family. If you're looking for a loving companion with a big heart, I could be the perfect match.
Meow! Hello, I'm Bean (the Calico), and this is my big brother Toasty. I like eating q-tips and greeting delivery drivers. Toasty likes snacks and yelling at everyone in the middle of the night. Nice to meet you, neighbours!
I'm Fox! I was transferred to Dog Tales from another shelter, never experiencing the comfort of a home. I'm a sweet soul with very low energy and would do best with someone that loves to lounge around as much as I do, in a home with little to no stairs. I'm friendly with every person and dog I meet, and am truly such a gentleman! As a senior pup, I do have some needs. I suffer from arthritis and require daily medication. I also have an issue with my left eye, Dog Tales is exploring potential treatment options. Additionally, I will be undergoing a dental procedure and a mass removal in the coming weeks. Despite my previous challenges, I'm a loyal companion, with so much love to give, and am looking for that special family to spend my remaining years with.
Woof! Hi there - I'm Layla! I am a 7 year old rescue from Dog Tales Rescue and Sanctuary. I love winter walks at St. Andrews Valley Golf Course, to hunt for the biggest sticks, and to chase my ball. I also of course love my forever family and am so happy that they brought me home!
Hi! My name is Wilhemina, but I go by Billie. I'm five-and-a-half years old and was adopted in 2021 from Outrun Rescue in little Lisle, Ontario. I'm a mix of Norwegian Elkhound, Siberian Husky, and Alaskan Malamute, so I love the snow, but I'm happiest napping by the front door. I love people, which makes me a terrible guard dog but a fast friend—particularly if you have treats (my family calls me "food motivated" but I consider myself more of a gourmet). I get along with everyone I meet, and am glad to bring happiness to my whole family every day.
My name is Callisto! My story is a true, rags to riches story… see, I was born in a cold, damp barn, and my future looked bleak, but I never gave up on my dream that things will get better. And would you believe it, it didn't just get better, it got amazing, in fact, they should have called me Lucky! A few weeks after I was born, in walked a couple, I gave them my most enduring smile and cuddled into their arms when they picked me up. And the rest is history. I now live in a wonderful house, which I run of course. My family loves me so much, and provides me with everything I need. So don’t give up, if things look bad and life throws you a curveball, remember better things are on the horizon.

It's a time when hidden talents and truths are ready to be uncovered, so listen closely to what your heart and mind are telling you! Wishing everyone a prosperous, fulfilling, and insightful year ahead.
Let’s talk about building strong communities. How can we work together to make EG stronger and more resilient? The best way to do so is to help each other, be kind to one another, and to support our local businesses.
Supporting local businesses isn't just about ‘shopping’ — it's about strengthening the fabric of our communities. When we choose to shop local, we are investing in the people around us, fostering our unique culture, and encouraging business growth that benefits everyone. Local businesses create jobs, support local producers, and contribute to the character of our neighbourhoods. By supporting local businesses, we build more resilient, vibrant communities where everyone can thrive. Together, we can keep our community connected, sustainable, and full of life. Shopping local means more than a transaction; it’s a commitment to a shared future.
These businesses contribute in so many ways as community leaders, volunteers, event sponsors and much more. Some other ways you can help include tagging local businesses on your social media channels, buying directly from farmers and artisan vendors, recommending your favourite local businesses to others, and attending community events. You can also shop and support our local East Gwillimbury Farmers Market which runs from May to October. Vendor applications are open now at EGFM.ca
Speaking of strong communities, our Spring and Summer Health and Active Living guide will be online on March 19. Find something for everyone to stay active and have fun! Resident registration for spring programs opens on March 27 and non-resident registration opens on April 3. View the program guide online at eastgwillimbury.ca/Guide or register at eastgwillimbury.ca/ireg.
We are also looking to build a strong community by hosting an EG You Belong Job Fair on March 11 from 1 to 6 p.m. at the EG Sports Complex (1914B Mount Albert Road). This event is part of the upcoming recruitment process for our new facility, the Health and Active Living Plaza, another way we are growing EG as a strong, inclusive and resilient community. We invite you to explore exciting career opportunities with us, meet Town staff, learn about upcoming positions, the qualifications needed, and discover the next steps in the hiring process. My own career began in municipal parks and recreation where I developed, learned and met some wonderful people. Don't miss this chance to be part of a vibrant team dedicated to serving the community! The Give Back Awards shine a spotlight on the incredible ways students are making a difference in our communities!
Every year, Magna's Neighbourhood Network gives a $1,000 cash prize to 20 graduating students from high schools in Aurora, Georgina, King Township, Newmarket, and Whitchurch-Stouffville. The winners are selected for their outstanding contributions to others and their ongoing dedication to community involvement.
It’s important to note that the focus isn’t on how many hours a student has volunteered. It’s on the impact they’ve had. “Last year’s winners included students who tutored children learning English, built a website to support their peers, collected winter clothing for those in need, and more,” says Erin Cerenzia, Manager, Community Relations. “These students are driven by a desire to make a real difference—whether it’s breaking down barriers, amplifying voices that have been overlooked, or simply helping to make the world a better place. Their efforts show the true power of community.”
On February 3rd, the Awesome Foundation Newmarket proudly presented $1,000 cash to Bridgenorth LifeEdge Access Program supporting youth in our community who have experienced sex tra cking and sexual exploitation. One of the biggest barriers these youth face is transportation—getting to a safe space where they can access counseling, support, and resources. This funding will help break down that barrier, increasing connectedness, engagement, and ultimately, their safety. We believe in funding awesome ideas that make a difference in Newmarket. Do you have a project that helps youth in our community? Apply for $1,000 in no-strings-attached funding and bring your idea to life!
“They don’t just volunteer for the sake of it,” Erin adds. “They create lasting change that helps others for years to come.”
We need your help to spread the word! If you know a graduating student who has gone above and beyond in their community—by supporting a local charity, showing leadership, or advocating for a cause they care about—encourage them to apply! Their stories of giving back deserve to be celebrated.
The application deadline is March 28th at 4 p.m. Find more information at www.nnetwork.org/GBA.

“O Canada- How dear to us thy broad domain! The land of hope for all who toil, the true North Strong and Free.”
Hi. I’m Jennifer McLachlan.
As we face threats to our sovereignty and survival, the second verse of our national anthem rings in my ears. I hear its call to action, and, as an experienced global security professional, I swear to protect every inch of this broad domain.
That’s one big reason I want to be your member of federal parliament for Newmarket-Aurora.
I need you to vote with me.
I’m not going to lie . If elected, I can’t— a government can’t-- solve all of your problems. That’s why I need you to work with me. Canada is the land of hope for those who are willing to toil to make it better.
My personal story—you can read it on my web page-- is no more compelling than YOUR story. So, let’s write this next chapter of Canada’s story together
We’ll fight for affordability, whether it’s putting food on the table or a roof over our heads. We’ll strengthen our military and enforce our laws while fighting against violence and hate. We’ll provide a climate for growing business while fighting against a changing environment climate that threatens what we grow. We’ll fight for a resilient community, not just for those who have, but even harder for those who have not.
And we’ll fight for the truth-- for the truth makes Canada strong and free.
Are you with me?
As prices for food, baby formula and diaper continue to rise at an alarming rate, one of the most urgent concerns for youth parents is being able to afford essential, practical supplies like healthy food for their children and diapers for their babies. Every month with the help of local volunteers, Rose of Sharon delivers free Family Care Packages of groceries, baby food, diapers, hygiene supplies and clothing to the homes of vulnerable young families living across York Region.
Our Food Security Program is taking a step forward with the addition of a Family Nutrition component. Pregnant and parenting youth learn how to prepare simple, family-friendly meals that are both nutritious and affordable. Cooking sessions inspire confidence in the kitchen while fostering valuable life skills that promote long-term health for growing families.
A cornerstone of the program is Justine, our dedicated Food & Resource Coordinator who leads interactive cooking classes each month. Participants can attend in-person sessions at our new Rose of Sharon site at Nicholson Road in Newmarket, gaining hands-on experience in the kitchen. For added flexibility, one virtual cooking class is offered every month, ensuring that everyone can participate regardless of their schedules or location. The cooking classes are tailored to provide practical tips and tricks, from meal planning to smart grocery shopping. Recipes feature affordable, accessible ingredients like the ones provided in our family care packages, enabling families to create nutritious meals with limited budgets.
By integrating Family Nutrition into our Food Security Program, we’re addressing food accessibility while empowering young mothers with the skills and knowledge to create healthy meals on a budget. Together, we’re building stronger, healthier communities—one meal at a time. For more information visit: roseofsharon.com
We came together on February 3rd to raise the Pan-African flag in honor of Black History Month—a profound symbol of resilience, unity, and self-determination. As the flag was raised, it carried with it our collective commitment to truth, justice, and the enduring legacy of those who paved the way for us. Black history is not only a reflection of the past; it is a reminder of the future we are building, one rooted in equality and respect. Before the flag-raising at the Town of Newmarket Municipal o ces, the community gathered in council chambers to engage in meaningful conversations and learn about Black history. A heartfelt thank you to NACCA and the Town of Newmarket for facilitating this opportunity to come together, listen, and grow.
On February 13th, realtor Christina Assuncao and Ariana Laxdal from Old Flame Newmarket hosted a heartwarming Galentine's Day event in support of Rose of Sharon Services for Young Mothers. Ladies gathered with their girlfriends at Old Flame on Main Street to enjoy a fun-filled day of eating, drinking, and shopping with amazing vendors who generously donated a portion of their sales back to Rose of Sharon. It was a beautiful day of community, support, and celebration!
The first venture towards establishing a hospital for northern York County (York County was then comprised of what is now York Region and Toronto) was made by Dr. Hutt at his residence on the east side of Main St., just south of the Christian (now Christian Baptist) Church
In 1922, Dr. Dales purchased Dr. Hutt’s property and opened a public hospital in his residence. Shortly after this he applied for and obtained a charter, and appointed some of Newmarket’s most active and prominent citizens as its board directors. It was this charter that gave the organization the name “York County Hospital” and enabled it to receive financial assistance from the government. A Ladies’ Hospital Aid was established soon after
By 1923, however, York County Hospital was far too crowded and a committee was organized to investigate the possibility and opportunity of relocating to a larger site Three different residences around Newmarket were chosen and an architect was hired to determine the most suitable site for a new hospital. In the end, the Cane Family residence at the south-east corner of Huron Street (now Davis Drive) and Prospect Street was chosen. An extensive fund-raising project was undertaken, the Cane House was purchased, and two additions were constructed to the residence. During the renovations to the residence, unfortunately a short-circuit occurred and the original building was destroyed by fire
A new structure was constructed in 1927. A 25-bed hospital whose small size gave it the affectionate name “Cottage Hospital”. As the county grew, so did the hospital The Margaret Davis wing was added in 1945 and another addition was erected in 1956. This was followed by massive new structures being built to the east of the old hospital, finally taking the form of the current Southlake Regional Health Centre. The original “cottage hospital” was eventually demolished when the original front doors were incorporated into the interior of the new centre lobby at Southlake
When Melanie joined the Volunteer Committee for the Nature's Emporium Run for Southlake many years ago, she never imagined she would be needing the equipment she had fundraised for.
In 2022, Melanie was diagnosed with breast cancer. Thanks to surgery, radiation and the incredible care from her clinical team at Southlake’s Regional Cancer Centre, she is now in “thrivership” and back to doing the things she loves, including supporting her local hospital and community!
In her ninth year of supporting the event, Melanie has already signed up for this year’s 5km walk/run and is ready to raise for Southlake Health. The government doesn’t fund most new or replacement equipment — fundraising from community members like you and Melanie, will put much-needed tools and equipment in the hands of Southlake’s clinicians who care for our family, friends and neighbours.
“Our hospital needs our support to continue providing state-of the-art care. Southlake is my hospital; Southlake is our hospital,” says Melanie.
Join Melanie and the hundreds of your friends and neighbours in support of Southlake Health! Whether you participate and fundraise to say thank you for compassionate care you received, or to ensure leading edge care is available for those you love, we are so grateful for your participation and support. We can’t wait to see you Sunday, April 27! Register today at runforsouthlake.ca.

On January 8th, Neighbour Media had the pleasure of joining the wonderful group at Community Living Central York for their 8-week pasta-making class! As part of the plan to build a healthcare system that better supports the needs of people and families across the province, MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy announced that the Ontario government is investing over $20 million, including an increase in annual base funding of $11.6 million, in Southlake Health. This investment will support Southlake’s operations, ensuring people and families in northern York Region and southern Simcoe County have access to high-quality care, close to home.
The first telephone call ever made was on March 10, 1876, when Alexander Graham Bell said, "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you!"
After World War II, my parents made a life-changing decision –they left the Netherlands to build a new future in Canada. Like so many others who chose to make this country their home, they embraced the promise of new opportunities. I am deeply grateful for the path they took and the life it gave our family.
Canada is a wonderful country with limitless potential – one limited only by our vision of what can be. And while I appreciate our friends to the south, I will say that I have no desire to be part of the United States. So, thanks for the offer, Mr. President, but the answer is NO THANKS! Not today, not ever!
As we deal with the threat of tariffs, we need to see there is opportunity within the chaos. We need to remove internal trade barriers and establish free trade within our country. We must take bold, transformative action to eliminate regulatory barriers, encourage the free movement of labour, and further standardize regulations across Canada. The economic opportunity is significant. As is the opportunity to expand our trading partners. With a federal election looming, we are now in full debate on defining Canada’s future.
Tearing down our nation is not a solution, but being honest regarding the challenges we face is the first step to real growth. We can face those challenges, build around our extensive resources and our human capital. Let ambition fill our sails and compassion guide our rudder.

Lastly, March Break is almost here, and I want to wish students- and many parents- an awesome week off! If you are planning a staycation, you’ll want to check out our great day camps, drop-in programs and other activities that the Town has going on. Visit aurora.ca for all the details.
It was an amazing afternoon on February 1st at The Mayor's Celebration of installation party! Neighbour Media had a blast alongside Mayor Tom Mrakas, Michael, Henri, and Shannon from the title sponsor, Geranium Homes! The energy in Aurora Town Square was electric as students from across Aurora came together to curate this year’s MCOYA25 exhibition! It was so inspiring to see these talented students showcase their incredible work to our wonderful guests, the Aurora Cultural Centre staff, and board members before the exhibition o cially opened to the public on February 8th. Don't miss out on this fantastic celebration of creativity and youth talent – the Mayor’s Celebration of Youth Arts is on until April 20th at 50 Victoria Street, Aurora!
On January 31st, the Aurora Black Community proudly kicked off Black History Month with a powerful ceremony, raising the Pan African flag at Aurora Town Hall. The celebration continued in the council chambers, where we were moved by inspiring speakers and meaningful reflections. A beautiful start to a month of honouring history, culture, and resilience.
On February 22nd, the Key Advantage Team is joining thousands of Canadians across the country and raising funds for the Coldest Night of the Year walk supporting Inn from the Cold. Our team is heavily involved in giving back to the communities we live in and work in. As dedicated homeowners, neighbours, parents, residents, and working professionals, we consider it our privilege and our responsibility to elevate the areas we call home. We believe home should be a safe space, but also an accessible space for everyone.
We are walking in the Coldest Night and helping to raise funds and awareness for those experiencing hurt, homeless and hunger, recognizing humbly that anyone can lose their footing. All individuals need help from time to time and it is our mission to help make home a safe and accessible space and help people find pathways to permanent housing and a brighter future. Real estate and community go hand in hand. We have high standards for our professional work and our philanthropic contributions. Walking to support the Coldest Night of the Year, braving the cold for a good cause has never been more important.
On February 8th, Hill MPP Liberal Candidate Jason Cherniak o cially opened his campaign o ce! Family, volunteers, supporters, and friends gathered for an inspiring event filled with excitement for the road ahead. We heard uplifting words from former Mayor of Aurora, Tim Jones, current MP for Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill, Leah Taylor Roy, and of course, from Jason Cherniak himself.
Recently, the threats of annexation from our neighbour to the south have made headlines. These threats are real, but we all know that our sovereignty is not up for negotiation, and "economic force" will not work.
In these challenging times, it’s more important than ever to rally together around our national identity. Let’s take pride in supporting Canadian made products, local businesses and spend our money on travel or investments in Canada.
To show our strength and unity, my o ce will be distributing free Canadian flags and lawn signs. I encourage you to decorate your homes and streets with our flag—let it fly high as a symbol of the pride we share in being Canadian. Together, we stand as the True North, strong and free, and we will continue to protect that legacy for generations to come.
The Aurora Chamber of Commerce hosted the annual Town Hall Address with Mayor Mrakas on February 19th, at the Royal Venetian. Close to 300 guests heard the latest updates from the Mayor, and about other exciting initiatives happening in Aurora. You can watch the 2025 State of the Town Address at youtube.com/c/TownofAurora
Pi Day (March 14 or 3/14) celebrates the mathematical constant π (3.14159…) - and of course is a great excuse to eat pie!
March signals changes – seasons, weather, activities, taxes, connections and much more. We’d like to share a few things that Routes is supporting over the coming weeks.

Whatever comes your way this March, take time to enjoy it with your family, neighbours and community!
What a night! Over 40 amazing women from the Ladies Supper Club gathered at Wimpy's Diner in Newmarket for an evening full of fun, good food, and giving back! By enjoying a delicious meal, they helped support Community Living Central York with a portion of February's proceeds being donated to this wonderful organization. We not only supported a fabulous new business in Newmarket, but we also got inspired by Emily and Maggie, two incredible individuals supported by CLCY, who shared their powerful stories. The Ladies Supper Club is all about making positive connections and leaving a lasting impact; let’s keep spreading those good vibes!
Dear Neighbour,
Sometimes, it takes a threat to remind us of who we are.
The unjustified tariff threats from President Trump and the suggestion that Canada could be the 51st state have done something remarkable: they have united you, me and millions more Canadians in defence of the country we love.
We’ve always treated Americians as neighbours and friends. We fought on the same side of the same wars. We paid with Canadian lives and treasure to fight for America, avenging the 9/11 attacks. We confronted their and our wildfires and floods together. And built an economic and military partnership that is decades long. If Canada is not America’s friend, who is?
See, the problem is, at times, Canadians might be too polite, soft-spoken, and humble for our own good. We are slow to anger and quick to forgive, but never confuse our kindness with weakness. We love our country and flag. We are a strong people with a proud history as a warrior nation, whose soldiers have proven fierce enough to crush the fascists, the communists, and Al-Qaeda, yet humble enough to never once brag about their heroism. We are mild-mannered and made of steel.
While we may not have met yet, I know you and I agree on this: Canada will never be the 51st state.
If President Trump puts tariffs on Canadian exports, we will respond with dollar for dollar retaliatory tariffs on the U.S.A, and every penny raised from these counter-tariffs will go to businesses and workers affected, and the rest will go to tax cuts for Canadians. Not one penny will go to other government spending.
But that is only the beginning, Pierre Poilievre’s Conservative Party of Canada has a "Canada First" plan to strengthen our country after Justin Trudeau and his top economic advisor, Mark Carney, put us in such a weak position.
Here’s what our common sense plan means for you.
Promote trade among Canadian provinces to reduce dependence on the U.S. market, this will boost the national GDP by approximately $5,100 per person.
Construct pipelines to the Atlantic and Pacific coast so Canada becomes self-reliant for the export of our energy resources. Increase defence spending to strengthen Canada's military capabilities, including a new Arctic military base, to counter the growing threats to Canadian sovereignty and security from adversaries.
Address labour shortages, particularly in healthcare, through the "Blue Seal" program to standardize certification processes across provinces and enable qualified professionals to have their credentials recognized promptly.
Scrap the Trudeau-Carney carbon tax, saving you money every time you fill up, buy groceries, or pay the heating bill.
Bring It Home Tax Cut to lower taxes on energy, work, homebuilding, investment and making products in Canada.
Cut personal income taxes to alleviate financial burdens on Canadians.
Axe the sales tax on new homes under a million, saving Canadians up to $50,000 when they buy.
Incentivize municipalities to speed up permits, free up land, and cut fees to build, build, build homes that are right for their communities.
Find one dollar of savings for every new dollar the government spend. Cut back on high price consultants, botched procurements, and foreign aid for dictators and terrorists.
Bring in “Jail not Bail” for repeat violent offenders.
Mandatory life sentences for those convicted of trafficking fentanyl to end the fentanyl crisis that has led to 50,000 deaths in the last decade. Let’s be clear, this is a crisis, not a mere ‘challenge’ like Mark Carney has said. We have lost more Canadians to fentanyl in the last decade, than we lost in the Second World War.
Stop giving free hard drugs to addicts and shut down the radical “safe supply” programs fuelling chaos, homelessness, and violence. We will invest in treatment and recovery to bring our loved ones home drug free.
It’s a common sense plan that will restore hope, rebuild trust, and ensure your family can get ahead again.
The last few months have been a turbulent time, even before President Trump. Like many, you may have breathed a sigh of relief when Justin Trudeau announced his resignation.
But as a mother, a wife, and a finance professional, I can’t help but think of the Canada that the Trudeau government with his top economic advisor, Mark Carney, are leaving behind – out-of-control prices (on everything!), unsafe streets, homes that families can’t afford, and a weakened economy that leaves us a target for President Trump.
We need urgent change. But here’s the problem...
Trudeau may be on his way out, but his Liberal Party is still in power and his economic advisor, Mark Carney, is ready to continue Trudeau’s legacy. Just last week, Mark Carney announced his plan to introduce a new Carbon Tax on Canadian steel at the same time as President Trump announced tariffs on Canadian steel! While Mark Carney claims Canadians don’t use the products produced by big business, Canadian steel is used in everything: cars, appliances, medical equipment, buildings.
We can’t afford these self-inflicted policies that destroy Canadian businesses, the revolving-door justice system that allows violent offenders to roam free, and radical drug policies that make deadly narcotics more accessible to addicts – and, yes, even children.
Mark Carney stood by as Trudeau’s reckless spending created the inflation crisis that’s made your groceries, your gas, and your home heating more expensive, because, let’s be honest, the prices have never come down!
Newmarket–Aurora doesn’t need another Liberal Prime Minister to continue Trudeau’s failed policies. We need a new government with a common sense plan that will finally put YOU and YOUR FAMILY first. But Pierre and I can’t put Canada First without your support.
That’s why I am humbly asking for your vote in the upcoming federal election – and the honour of serving as Newmarket–Aurora’s next Member of Parliament.
Together, we can build a future where your family thrives, your voice is heard, and our country is filled with hope and opportunity once again
Sincerely,
Sandra Cobena Your Common Sense Conservative Candidate

“I’m so blessed and honoured to be one of the many volunteers at Abuse Hurts. They recognize the talents of volunteers and give them opportunities to flourish,” says Cooper. “A few years ago they convinced me to use my talents as a decorator and it has been such a privilege to do so. But I was also fortunate to help women to choose outfits and have their hair and make-up done during the Abuse Hurts make-over days. The looks on their faces melted my heart and it was a great feeling to know I was a part of it.
Despite the chilly weather, Family Day at Aurora Town Park was a huge hit! The Town of Aurora pulled out all the stops for their Arctic Adventure event, offering a day full of exciting activities. The community gathered to enjoy fire shows, watch talented lumberjacks in action, get up close with wildlife, and groove with Bex in Motion. There were plenty of photo opportunities and a cozy marshmallow roasting station to keep everyone warm and smiling! What a fun day for the whole family to enjoy.
As an educational assistant I was able to bring students to Abuse Hurts to get their volunteer hours by organizing and packing toys for kids. The students told me working with Abuse Hurts gave them a wonderful feeling they will never forget.
Abuse Hurts is an organization I’m proud to support and as a newly retired individual. I’m hoping to get more involved with some of the programs it has to offer. The people at Abuse Hurts give of themselves freely and unconditionally.” So do you, Jo – thank you!

“Neighbour Media’s Myles Doak was honored to take part in the Town of East Gwillimbury’s Mentorship Program, sharing his expertise with aspiring local entrepreneurs. As a mentor, Myles met with two up-and-coming businesses, offering insights on how to leverage the internet to drive growth and increase revenue.
With a focus on digital strategies, Myles provided guidance on enhancing online presence, utilizing social media effectively, and optimizing digital marketing efforts to reach a wider audience. His goal was to equip these businesses with the tools and knowledge needed to thrive in today’s competitive landscape.
Neighbour Media is proud to support local entrepreneurs and contribute to the growth of East Gwillimbury’s business community. Initiatives like the EG Mentorship Program help foster innovation, collaboration, and economic development —something Myles and the entire Neighbour Media team are passionate about.
This Valentine’s Day, Neighbour Media wanted to spread a little extra love throughout Aurora and Newmarket, so we teamed up with Saltbox Cafe to purchase their delightful “Love and Lattes” gift packs. With hearts full of kindness, we delivered these thoughtful packages to some of our #GoodNeighbours in the community. Each gift pack was filled with warmth and cheer, offering a special treat to brighten someone’s day.
We believe in the power of community, and there’s nothing better than supporting local businesses while sharing joy with others. It was a truly heartwarming experience, and we’re so grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with Saltbox Cafe and connect with the amazing people who make our neighborhoods so special. Here’s to the spirit of kindness, love, and supporting each other in every way possible!
What is your most memorable community moment?
Performing at the Newmarket Music Series in July of 2024. I performed with my Alanis Morissette Tribute band “A Little Jagged” as part of the Canadian Rock Night and it was amazing! We worked too hard as a band to put the show together and it went off without a hitch! We received so much great feedback from the town and the community! It was so awesome and such a proud moment for me.
If you could have dinner with one person, dead or alive who would it be?
Kelly Clarkson! She is my all time favourite artist and a huge inspiration to me as a musician and singer. I think she is so kind, talented and funny and I think we would get along so well. She seems like a very real, down-to-earth person with a wealth of knowledge and it would be really cool to chat with her over dinner.
If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be?
Work Hard. Nothing in this life worth having comes easy, you have to put in the work. Also, success looks different to everyone, so stop comparing yourself and run your own race. Follow the path that is best for you.
