NEIGHBOUR COVER STORY

Deb Clark

@neighbourmedia @neighbouraurora @neighboureastgwillimbury @neighbournewmarket

Community giving has always been a guiding principle for Deb Clark. Like everyone, she sometimes gets caught up in chasing deadlines and goals, but when she works on a project that supports the community, she feels like she’s back on track—back on the right road.

Deb’s father instilled in her at a young age that the best way to find joy was through service. He was a remarkable role model, involving her in his many community-focused initiatives. She still fondly recalls sitting beside him in their old Chevy, delivering food hampers or visiting friends in hospitals and senior homes. A respected community leader, his spirit of giving lives on in Deb’s heart every day.

Owning and operating Oakridge Fashions is a true joy for Deb—albeit a lot of hard work. During those demanding moments, she often hears her mother’s voice reminding her, “Hard work never hurt anyone.” Her mother was right, but Deb has found that blending community service into her work not only re-energizes her but also brings her a deep sense of fulfillment. To her, this is a reminder that adding purpose to one’s day is a sure path to finding joy.

Take the stairs and walk more often

Drink more water

Learn a new skill or explore a new hobby

Practice self-care

Volunteer regularly

Be more environmentally conscious

Travel more

Reconnect with old friends

Be a better neighbour

Each month the Neighbour Paper will make you smile! If you have something you’d like to share or would like help promoting, please email llanning@neighbourmedia.ca Don’t forget to follow @NeighbourMedia on Instagram and Facebook for real time information and content sharing!

Deb with representatives from this year’s recipients of the Giving Shop

Over the years, Deb has organized numerous events to benefit the community. In 2020, she launched The Giving Shop. During the challenging COVID winter, when the store was closed more often than open, Deb found purpose in selling felted Christmas mice ornaments to support The Aurora Food Pantry. The enthusiastic response from customers inspired her to create The Giving Shop as a permanent annual tradition. Each holiday season, the store transforms into a space filled with stocking stuffers, giftable items, and a children’s book series featuring those beloved Christmas mice ornaments. It has become a place where holiday shoppers embrace the spirit of giving on a deeper level.

The joy of giving, Deb believes, is contagious. It quickens the heart, lightens the step, and fills the spirit with happiness. As long as she has anything to say about it, giving back will remain a cornerstone of both her business and her personal life. For Deb Clark, it’s the best road to travel. #GoodNeighbour

As we step into a new year, I’m excited to share some wonderful news. Last month, my Private Member’s Bill, An Act to proclaim the month of June as Seniors Month received royal assent. It is forever o cial, every June, we’ll celebrate the incredible contributions of seniors in our community and across this great province. From volunteering to mentoring, their impact is felt in so many ways. This will be a time not only for recognition, but a time to embrace new opportunities, a time to educate on important topics that have specific implications for older adults, and a time to come together as age friendly communities with the greatest respect for one another.

Despite challenging economic times, we are delivering on our commitment to rebuild Ontario’s economy, keep costs down, put more money in your pocket and deliver better services for YOU. Very soon, you will be receiving the $200 taxpayer rebate as announced in the Fall Economic Statement. This support will reach over 12.5 million adults and 2.5 million children across Ontario, providing families with a little extra help as we head into 2025. Our government believes these funds are better spent by you, and I’m thrilled to see this program in action.

It is my great honour to represent the residents of Newmarket—Aurora at Queen’s Park. I would like to wish you all a new year filled with peace, love, gratitude, and many blessings. As my mother always said, “Count your blessings one by one, and you will see what the Lord has done.”

MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy announced a funding boost of $809,185 for the Healthy Babies Healthy Children program, at York Regional Headquarters on November 22nd.

Joined by PA Logan Kanapathi, MPP Daisy Wai, and Mayor John Taylor, she emphasized how this investment will strengthen essential support for parents and children, fostering a brighter and healthier future. NEIGHBOURHOOD PETS

Bailey and Boomer

We're Bailey and Boomer! We were surrendered when our owner had a terrible accident. This sweet duo has settled well and are doing great! We're both very affectionate and good with kids and all people. Bailey: I'm the younger pup that loves to zoom around the yard, do tricks for treats and jump up and give kisses. Boomer: I'm the sweet older boy, who loves to get belly rubs and to play a gentle game of fetch. We would do amazing in a family home with small children because of our loving demeanor. We have also tested well with other dogs so far. We are looking for a foster or forever home together!

“My 2025 New Year resolution is to go on more walks, bark at more squirrels, and eat more treats!”

Eli

Hana

I'm Hana! Originally from Egypt, I was surrendered due to my complex medical needs, but I continue to bring joy to everyone I meet. Earlier this year, I began experiencing seizures. Despite being started on anti-seizure medication, my condition progressed, leading to severe cluster seizures. After being hospitalized, tests revealed that I suffer from Meningoencephalitis of unknown etiology (MUE). I am now on a specialized treatment plan. Although I have lost my vision, I haven't lost my zest for life. I adore going on walks, feeling the world around me, and curling up for snuggles with my favourite people. I am proof that love and determination can brighten even the darkest days, and I'm ready to share my sweetness with a family that will cherish me.

Hi - I'm Eli, a tabby! I am from the same litter as my sister Priscilla, but we are about as different as two cats could be. I'm an adventurer who loves visiting our neighbours, jumping up onto tables, counters and windowsills. I have gotten into a lot of trouble this Christmas season; climbing the tree, knocking the ornaments off and chasing the balls around the room. But even with all of my mischief, I am also a very loving soul. I can be picked up like an infant, flipped on my back, gazing upwards while having my belly rubbed. Just like a human baby, I have always needed skin to skin contact and will reach a paw up to touch the neck of the person holding me.

Felix

Meow! Hi - I’m Felix. I am a 12 year old long-haired Tuxedo cat. I am an indoor cat that enjoys cuddling, sunbathing and belly rubs. I am definitely NOT spoiled, regardless of what my mom says. My favourite toy is my catnip Avocado. My most recent adventure was spending $600 at the vet because these new "healthy" treats sent me over the edge (Sorry, Mom)! You can follow me on Instagram @felix.the.tuxie.

Priscilla

I'm Priscilla, a tortoiseshell! I am the princess of the household. I hid for most of my first week at home - I even had my parents taking down drywall because I had found a tiny gap between the wall and the fireplace to hide! Two years later, I am no longer shy and get very vocal when I want something. I'm a lap cat and will come bounding into the TV room as soon as someone sits down on the couch. I will climb all over my family members and demand that they straighten their legs so that I can stretch myself out on their laps. Anytime I go into my sister's bedroom, I love to steal her doll slippers and run away with them! But my parents agree that Eli and I have brought so much joy, love, and laughter to the family, since we came home in 2022.

Luna

Hi there - I’m Luna! I’m an 8 year old Dogo Argentino. I love people, destroying cardboard, and sucking on blankets. I am very smart! I was born deaf so I learned to understand sign language. I used to love hiking, but now I prefer to lay by the fire and nap. I also talk in my sleep, and I’m afraid of crickets!

I always love our annual Levee, as it gives me and all members of Council an opportunity to meet with residents, while giving the whole community a chance to come together to enjoy family-friendly activities such as skating, a pancake breakfast and more. I hope to see you all there!

We also have other exciting events and initiatives happening over the first few months of 2025, including Aurora’s Arctic Adventure over the Family Day long weekend in February- and Black History Month events throughout the entire month of February. 6th Annual Key Needs Challenge

At Key Advantage, we realize all of life's transitions evolve around the need for a new sense of home. Home isn't always a safe place for everyone and we are so proud that Royal LePage is Canada's only national real estate brand with their own charity, the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation. The Shelter Foundation helps women and children to rebuild their lives after domestic violence, supports education programs and the shelters. We are so proud to donate a portion of every commission, on behalf of our clients, as a thank you for entrusting us with their business, so that together, we can make a difference.

The Key Needs Challenge was born out of our strong commitment to our community and a need to continue to help, inspire others to help and create a ripple effect leveraging our partnerships with our colleagues coast to coast. Essentially, the team identifies a need to support the Shelters or those in our community and looks to fulfill it. Then we get to work - out shopping, encouraging clients, community partners and local businesses to assist and get shopping and collecting to fulfill the goal. We then challenge 5 of our national referral partners and inspire them to do the same and create a ripple effect of fulfilling a "key need" in their community. From there, they are encouraged to challenge another 3 so that we can spread kindness and support to those who need it most and at a time that can be so challenging for many around the holidays.

Our 6th annual Key Needs Challenge is in support of the Yellow Brick House, a shelter for women and children with locations in Newmarket and Markham. The Yellow Brick House provides help 24 hours a day. Every day, the facility operates at capacity and their goal is to empower women and children to rebuild their lives. Last year, some 139 women stayed at the shelter, and they supported 5,394 women and children.

“Together we can make a difference!”

Thank you to the Key Advantage Team, who provided urgently needed items and monetary support to Yellow Brick House, this past holiday season. The annual Key Needs Challenge encourages realtors across the country to help organizations in their communities! Together, they are making a difference throughout our towns, provinces, and beyond.

Sudoku is a logic-based, combinatorial number-placement puzzle. The objective is to fill the 9 × 9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the 9, 3 × 3 subgrids that compose the grid, contains all of the digits from 1 to 9.

MAYOR TAYLOR

Happy New Year!

The new year is an exciting time in Newmarket.

January is a time to pause and look back on all we accomplished in 2024 and a time to look forward to the next 12 months.

Over the last year, we debuted Ice Lounge on Main, adding to Newmarket’s roster of award-winning events.

We broke ground on the Mulock Park and began renovating the historic house in the park to create a park for generations to come and the AGO’s first satellite art gallery outside of Toronto.

The Postmark Hotel opened on Main Street, further establishing downtown as a destination for visitors from near and far. We also added more than 150 parking spaces in the area to support the vibrancy of the businesses there.

We added several recreation amenities throughout the town, including a new expanded Tennis Centre; we renewed playground equipment and added sports courts in five of our parks; added a new fitness centre; and enhanced the outdoor ice rink at Lions Park.

We built trails connecting more of Newmaket’s parks, recreation facilities, and greenspaces. This includes paving the Dave Kerwin Trail and beginning construction on the Mulock Multiuse Path. This path will connect the Mulock Park, Bailey Ecological Park, Fairy Lake Parks, the Tom Taylor Trail; and Magna Centre. 2025 is shaping up to be as exciting as 2024.

In addition to continuing to build out the Mulock Park and multi-use path, we’ll break ground on a pickleball centre.

We’ll see a new restaurant open downtown – Bar Locale – Ice Lounge on Main will return in February, and we’ll continue hosting popular events like the summer concert series at the Riverwalk, further enhancing the Main Street area as a destination.

These are just a few of the things we can all look forward to in 2025. I hope you can join me at my annual Levee on January 17 to kick the year off.

Irv at the George was the "main" place to be on December 11th! Main Street Realty hosted their annual appreciation event for their team, where they enjoyed food, drinks, and each other’s company - while celebrating the holiday season!

Happy New Year

Happy New Year!

Happy 90th Birthday, Mary Anne! Mary Anne has been supported by Community Living Central York since 1980, through their Supported Independent Living Program (SIL). The party was filled with love and reconnecting, and the guests who came out to help her celebrate on December 11th, are all individuals who have also been supported by CLCY for many years and, at one time or another, were supported in SIL.

On November 23rd, MPP Caroline Mulroney hosted families at the Mount Albert Community Centre for a morning of music, gingerbread house building, pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus, and lots of goodies! It was an amazing community event to kick off the holiday season.

Mayor and Council Pancake Breakfast and Skate

Join Mayor Hackson and Council for a complimentary breakfast and free skate on January 11 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the EG Sports Complex (1914B Mount Albert Road).

An unconnected phone booth, known as a Wind Phone, was unveiled in Aurora at Sheppard's Bush on December 13th, and along the Nokiidaa Trail in East Gwillimbury on December 16th. These installations, a partnership between the Town of Aurora, the Town of East Gwillimbury, and Oasis Bereavement, provide a unique, peaceful space where individuals can engage in one-way conversations with deceased loved ones. Wind phones became popular in Japan in the early 2010s as a way for people to mourn the deceased victims of the devastating Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Wind phones have grown in popularity worldwide over the last several years as a tool for healing, allowing those grieving to express their emotions in a private, reflective environment. Aurora's wind phone is the third, and East Gwillimbury's is the fourth installation in York Region by Oasis Bereavement, with others in Newmarket, Richmond Hill, and Keswick. The goal is to introduce more wind phones in natural, peaceful locations across the region in spring 2025.

Over 250 individuals supported by Community Living Central York, along with their families, enjoyed an evening of joy and celebration on December 12th, at CLCY Holiday Party. This heartwarming event is a cherished tradition that unites their vibrant community, as they share in the magic of the holiday season.

“ I have lived in Aurora for 35 years and worked at many notable local businesses (York Region, Canadian Tire, Magna International). But in 2019, I had the crazy idea to officially start my own business and launched Kitchen Table CEOs, my boutique marketing agency.

By assisting my peers with their online presence, marketing and connections, I help them tell their stories more effectively, reach more people and grow their businesses. It is my absolute pleasure to support and amplify the voices of other small (and micro) business owners in Aurora, whether they provide services or products, have a physical location or work from home.

Being able to help people within Aurora, my own community, and contribute positively in some small way to the economy and viability of local businesses is huge and means a lot to me.”

Message from MP Leah Taylor Roy

Dear Neighbour,

Our government has recently unveiled its Fall Economic Statement (FES). It is our blueprint to help Canadians get ahead. It includes measures that will make life more affordable, prosperous, and safe for Canadians from coast to coast to coast.

Among these measures is a plan to make homeownership more attainable for first-time buyers across the country. By permitting 30-year mortgage amortizations for first-time home buyers purchasing new builds, including condos, these changes will reduce down payments and help more families nationwide access viable options to purchase their

We have also proposed a new red-tape reduction o ce. This o ce will be tasked with streamlining the cutting of red tape and addressing outdated requirements in existing regulations. It will focus its work on important sectors like transportation, telecommunications, and power generation to ensure that red tape is not stifling progress.

Canadian’s safety and security is always a top concern and investments in border control are even more important at a time when US tariffs loom. That is why the FES also includes measures to secure our border against tra cking, crack down on auto thefts, and fortify bail rules. These proposals will give residents and investors’ confidence that Canada is a

Abuse Hurts Champion of the Month

To kick off 2025 with a great start, we are pleased to announce Still in Style Resale Boutique as our Champion of the Month for January! Cathy and Kimberley have been supporting Abuse Hurts through their beautiful consignment store, Still in Style Resale Boutique (aka, Still in Style), since 2012. Cathy states, “We support Abuse Hurts because they believe in what we have created. And we have seen the results of the efforts that have been put into Abuse Hurts over the years in addressing some serious problems in the community.”

In fact, it’s been a perfect partnership. We support one-another because Still in Style needs a place to send their unsold and donated consignment clothing items, and Abuse Hurts is always in need of good quality women’s clothing for its programs or Delivering Hope Boutique fundraising thrift store.

The better news is that Still in Style will be moving on March 1 to a new location in Newmarket that will be much closer to the Abuse Hurts Delivering Hope Boutique. Collaboration is a powerful vehicle for small businesses and we have had an excellent, long-running relationship with Cathy and Kimberley. They are women of compassion and they love to give back to the community by partnering with us in several ways, including their involvement with our annual Fashion Show event. Please join us in showing gratitude for all they do and support them by visiting their new address as of March 1: 1100 Gorham St., Newmarket.

7 years ago, I started a group on Facebook in the hopes of meeting other women in my community; The Ladies Supper Club. Making friends as an adult is di cult outside of our daily roles of partner, parent or employee. I thought if I could get two dozen women together, what a great group that would be!

The need for improving social wellbeing for adult women in my community is apparent because in 2024 we surpassed 1200 members in the group! What started out as a goal to find myself a "village" rapidly turned into a mission to promote and improve social wellbeing in the lives of ALL women in my community! This is a mission I am dedicated to!

For 5 years, my friend, Patricia Hawke has planned a Holiday Dinner and Fundraiser in support of our local food bank and I am so proud to say that this year our membership raised over $3500 in monetary donations and over 370 lbs of non-perishable items at her event. Without her hard work, it would not be the most well-attended event each year!

2024 was epic - let’s

Mayor Tom Mrakas

Town of Aurora

Our amazing Town-led

events

I couldn’t do a year in review without including our incredible Town-led events, three of which were honoured on Festivals and Events Ontario Top 100 list: Multicultural Festival, Haunted Forest and Christmas Market. Our events are attended by thousands and thousands of community members, and I really do love seeing our community come together to connect and create lasting memories. I can’t wait to see you all at these wonderful events in 2025 – you can visit aurora.ca/specialevents for the full list.

More spaces to enjoy

keep the

momentum going in 2025!

What a year Aurora had.

We completed our new arts and culture centre, built new parks, and came together at so many memorable Town-led special events. I want to thank all our active and engaged community members who take part in Town initiatives and who help guide our decision making through conversations, surveys and Council meetings. Here are some of my top community highlights from 2024, and some of the exciting work ahead in 2025.

A central hub in the heart of downtown

Opening Aurora Town Square in the fall was undoubtedly one of my proudest moments as Mayor. Thousands of community members visited the new space during our weeks-long celebration, which featured live performances (including Sloan!), art exhibits and more. Town Square – the single biggest project in the Town’s history – has quickly become the vibrant gathering place we envisioned, with community members coming together to celebrate, connect, and immerse themselves in world-class arts and culture. This landmark project is also driving our downtown revitalization efforts, drawing visitors from across the region, boosting local businesses, and attracting new opportunities.

Unveiling new outdoor spaces

Supporting people’s mental and physical well-being is a huge priority for the Town, so our ability to deliver and secure more outdoor spaces in 2024 was another big highlight. In October, we opened John Abel Park, a new outdoor space honouring our late, beloved councillor. In November, we finished Phase 2 of the David Tomlinson Nature Reserve trail. And just last month, we proudly unveiled the new playground at Town Park that features a wheelchair-accessible swing. What I’m most proud of, however, is the Town’s acquisition of three separate properties over the past year – 28 acres in total – for future park development.

Unearthing our unique history

In June, a documentary about the restoration efforts at Aurora’s historic pet cemetery, produced in partnership with the Aurora Museum & Archives, won a prestigious Telly Award, which honours excellence in video and television worldwide. Winning the award was cool, but it’s the restoration work that’s truly fascinating. Believed to be Canada’s first pet cemetery, Happy Woodland Pet Cemetery opened in the 1930s but was neglected for decades after being sold in the 1970s. The Town acquired the land in 2011, and the Museum & Archives has been busy cataloguing over 800 pet burial sites, uncovering headstones, and working to define the original boundaries. We hope to one day reopen this special place to the public and pursue National Historical Site designation.

Our commitment to ensuring Aurorans have access to more beautiful and functional spaces will continue in 2025. We will officially open the 7,500-square-foot addition to the SARC in the first half of the year, featuring a new, full-sized indoor court. We will make numerous court improvements for pickleball and tennis players, upgrade playgrounds at Fleury Park, Evans Park and Tom’s Park, and redevelop the boardwalk at Benjamin Pearson Park. We will also be moving forward on two innovative partnerships: one with St. Anne’s School and Shining Hill to create a new community park and state-of-the-art turf field, and the other with the Aurora Barbarians Rugby Football Club to develop an additional turf field at Sheppards Bush. Both new spaces will be open to residents and local sports groups in 2025.

Modernizing Yonge

I’m also really jazzed about finalizing the streetscape design for improvements slated for Yonge Street between Wellington Street and Church Street, also know as the Aurora Promenade. This project is central in our efforts to ensure our downtown is a modern, vibrant and inclusive place that draws people in and keeps them coming back. Some elements of the redesign include light pole upgrades, sidewalks improvements, parking and traffic flow improvements, landscaping and more. We’ll have several opportunities in 2025 for the community to learn more about the project and provide feedback, so stay tuned!

Confirmed:

Aurora one of the best places to find that sweet balance

In May, Aurora was named as the sixth best place in Canada for work-life balance – second in Ontario! – in a study by online real estate marketplace Point2Homes. The study garnered significant media attention , combing through 30 key metrics covering work intensity, health & wellbeing, and liveability. This was wonderful recognition for Aurora, but I wasn’t surprised by these results – work-life balance is a priority for so many of our residents and we’ve worked hard at the Town to support that through best-in-class recreation and cultural programming, as well as amenities.

Getting more shovels in the ground

A top priority for me in 2025 is working hard to ensure that anyone who wants to live in Aurora can do so. A big part of that is implementing measures to further streamline zoning and the development approval process. This includes tools like the Community Planning Permit System that combines zoning, site plan and minor variance processes into one application, helping ensure that we’re not only building more housing, but the right kind of housing that our community needs
