NEIGHBOUR COVER STORY

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at are the Muslims who believe in the Promised Messiah, Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (peace be on him) of Qadian, India. He founded the revival movement within Islam to re-emphasize on the essential teachings of peace, love, justice, and serving mankind. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) consists of members from the age of 16-40 years and is spread over 90 local chapters throughout Canada. The role of this auxiliary is to run regular programmes for the community youth with a mix of academic, sporting, social welfare, and charitable works. The key objective of AMYA is to serve and contribute to society at all levels irrespective of people’s beliefs, race, or gender. AMYA has been organizing charity runs for the past 15 years. In 2023, there were 23 runs organized across Canada supporting various charities and hospitals. As part of this national initiative, the Newmarket Chapter held their first run in 2022 supporting Blue Door and Newmarket Food Pantry. With the overwhelming response from the community, a total of $16000 was donated to both the charities. In 2023, the run supported York Region Food Network and CHATS, donating a total of $11000 to both the charities, with a participation of more than 300 people from across the Newmarket community from all walks of life. As the local Newmarket chapter of Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA), they have been involved in various charitable activities, such as food drives, blood drives, holiday gift donations, fundraising, and much more. Their dedicated members volunteer their time to give back to the community they are a part of, in any way possible. AMYA is looking forward to an even bigger and better Run For Newmarket in 2024, along with their other community initiatives. #GoodNeighbours

Main Street Realty would like to welcome Tanya Mirza to the Brokerage.

On New Year’s Eve, Reagan Irvine of The Irv at the George on Main Street, held a highly sought after party at the Newmarket Lions Hall. There was amazing food, drinks flowing, music playing and a room filled with happy guests, dressed to the nines. Main Street Realty decided to sponsor this awesome community event as we wanted to contribute to its success and support our Main street neighbours. This was the inaugural event, but due to its amazing success, there are plans to make it an annual occasion - not to be missed!

Tanya is a long time Newmarket resident and an exceptional realtor. Tanya has become a community builder giving generously to the Newmarket Food bank and the Children's Miracle Network. When she was at Royal Lepage she was a Red Diamond Award recipient. We are very fortunate that she has joined our Brokerage and we look forward to working with her!

BILAL'S OTF TRANSFORMATIVE JOURNEY

Happy 65th Birthday to Phil Laxdal!

Transformation; a dramatic change in thought, appearance and or feeling. Going to Orangetheory Newmarket – Aurora has transformed my appearance, thought and feeling about working out to the point where if I do not come in one day I feel disconnected. Suffering from weight issues for the majority of my life Orangetheory had come in like a saviour. The workout consists of an equal amount of cardio and weight training, helping to not only lose weight/fat but also build muscle in the process. Having lost over 120+ pounds, feeling better about myself and the food I eat - I cannot recommend Orangetheory enough. I would like to take the opportunity to thank The Lord for giving me the ability to attend such a great community filled with support and motivation. Thank you to Joe, Chris, Matt, Ricky, Ryan, Michelle, Karlie, Izzy and to all the OTF staff for having such a facility which helps people like me believe there is hope, support and motivation that even after being around 300 pounds there is always room to start and join the community.

Now I ask you, heading into this new year, how many of you want to change your lives?

- Bilal Orangetheory Newmarket - Aurora 16880 Yonge St #5, Newmarket (289) 807-3888 @orangetheory_newmarket_aurora

$3.7M for York Regional Police The new funding will go towards combatting hate crimes, upgrading infrastructure, and enforcing bail conditions. Dawn GALLAGHER MURPHY MPP for Newmarket–Aurora

A MESSAGE FROM MPP

DAWN GALLAGHER MURPHY

905-853-9889 Dawn.GallagherMurphy@pc.ola.org dawngallaghermurphy MurphyGallagher Dawn Gallagher Murphy

To the residents of Newmarket and Aurora, I wish to extend my warmest wishes for a year filled with prosperity, peace, and good health. Community safety is rated in the top three priorities by the residents in York Region. I am proud of our government’s investment of $3.7 million to the York Regional Police services as this reiterates our goal to ensure the safety and security of the people and property of the residents of Newmarket—Aurora and across York Region. This funding will provide York Regional Police with the advanced tools and training they need to continue their exemplary services in our fight to combat hate crimes, to enable important technology and infrastructure upgrades, and be able to efficiently monitor and enforce bail conditions. Recently, I visited The Rose of Sharon, who support about 300 pregnant and parenting young mothers. It was a privilege to recognize the $17,200 Ontario Trillium Foundation grant provided by our government. This funding has been instrumental in upgrading their kitchen with essential appliances to help provide nutritious meals. I also participated in the regional governance review held for York Region by the Standing Committee on Heritage, Infrastructure and Cultural Policy. I specifically questioned how our local municipalities are implementing forward looking zoning for transit supportive densities in specified areas around transit stations.

Partner:

Looking forward to the 2024 community events where we can chat about how we can continue to build our community together to ensure Newmarket and Aurora are the best places to live, work and raise a family.

On January 9th, MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy stopped in to meet with the team at Rose of Sharon Services for Young Mothers to hear about the difference that a $17,200 Capital grant awarded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) in 2022 has made. Thanks to the OTF Capital grant the Rose of Sharon was able to collaborate with Best Brand Appliance which went above and beyond to assist them in acquiring the appliances needed for their kitchen. Best Brand Appliance approached each vendor seeking a charitable discount to enable Rose of Sharon to procure larger appliances with the funding received from OTF. Best Brand not only played a pivotal role in lowering appliance costs but also generously contributed a new Kitchen Aid mix master.

MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy was thrilled to celebrate the young stars of iDance Studio, Chanel, Quinn, Victoria, Zoey and Ally, who represented Team Canada in Belgium! Their silver medal win at the International Dance Organization’s World Competition is a testament to their talent and hard work.

We are telMAX We've successfully deployed our 100% Pure Fibre Internet across most of Newmarket and have now commenced construction in Aurora. If you’re considering switching your internet service provider, you likely have some questions, and we’re here to provide answers. We are here to help answer some of the most common questions. Whose infrastructure does telMAX utilize? Not Bell, Rogers, or any other provider! TelMAX takes pride in designing and constructing its own privately funded 100% Pure Fibre network utilizing cutting-edge technology. Is telMAX known for its speed? Absolutely! Recognized by PC Magazine as the fastest Internet Service Provider for 2 consecutive years, and we’ve recently been crowned the best ISP for gaming in Canada too! I’ve noticed telMAX trucks in my neighbourhood. What’s happening? When you spot our contractor’s vehicles, it signifies that residents will soon have the option of choosing Internet service providers now. Our construction team is actively laying the fibre near your homes, providing you the opportunity to sign up for telMAX Internet, TV & Streaming and Home Phone solutions. How is telMAX different from other providers? We take pride in several key differences:

telMAX, Canada’s fastest Internet service provider, announced that its Board of Directors has named Michael Strople as the Company’s new Chief Executive Officer, as of January 2nd, 2024. Stuart Roberts, who has guided the company since May 2022, will transition into the role of President and Chief Operating Officer. Neighbour Media captured the moment when Mr. Strople met with the telMAX team at their headquarters in Stouffville.

1) Our network is 100% Pure Fibre to your home, ensuring lightning fast connections. 2) We are the most customer-centric communications company in Canada, with a local customer care team based in Stouffville. 3) We actively support and engage with the communities we serve, sponsoring local events, teams and clubs. 4) Our pricing is transparent and straightforward, without hidden fees or skyrocketing prices after our one-year contracts. You pay what your neighbour pays. These are just a few common questions we’ve addressed, but we’re here to answer any more you may have.

Feel free to reach out to us at 1-844-4telMAX or visit telMAX.com. We look forward to connecting with you in 2024 at events throughout Newmarket and Aurora!

Deja

Hi, I'm Deja! I am amazing in a home environment, am very calm and love spending time on the couch. I paw at people for attention and belly rubs, I get along very well with cats, am very gentle and will mind my own business. I'd be most comfortable in a home without children, as I am very nervous and reactive to quick movements/strangers invading my space. Dog Tales has been working on leash training with me, and I have improved quite a bit!

Woof - I'm Mike! I am a Jack Russell Yorkie and I will be turning 11 years old on April 9th. I have been blind since I was 6 years old, so I do not enjoy being picked up. But my mom says that I am still her fun-loving boy! I love treats, afternoon naps and early dinners. I also think that everyone in my house should go to bed at 8:30pm - my preferred bedtime.

Hi there, I'm Molly! I am a 4 year old Westiepoo. I love my Omi, she is my favourite human. My mom says that I am the happiest pup, but I do not like seeing dogs on the TV. My brother Mike is blind, so I have taken on the role of being his eyes and helping him manoeuvre around the house and find his toys!

Choi

I'm Choi and I am one strong guy! Most of the time I am tough and determined, but once I accept you into my circle - I am loyal and a real cuddle bear. I enjoy spending my days doing lots of tricks for treats, playing ball, and getting all the pets I can. Sometimes I'll even sit on your lap! I am extremely food motivated and enjoy structure. I would benefit from someone who is active, has experience with dogs of my demeanor, and will have the time to continue my training long term. An adult only home with no other pets, in a quiet environment, would be best for me.

Hi, I’m Roo! I’m a 4 month old Morkie. I’m cute, I’m adorable, and if you bother me I’m coming for your face!! Do you remember my brother Dunkin? No?? Neither do my parents, I’m all they care about now! Well enough about me... I’ve got socks to chew and worlds to rule. Dunkin fetch me my socks!!!!

Hi, I'm Isabelle - but my family calls me Izzy! I am a 14 year old Shih Tzu Yorkie. I'm highly food driven and love my treats! I may be getting old, but I still enjoy playing. My mom is my favourite human and I love her the most! She tells me that she loves my underbite and that makes me happy. I am quite skittish and nervous though... I do not like loud noises and hate storms. I will hide behind the toilet when I get scared - it's my safe place!

To attend or support ABC visit: www.aurorablackcommunity.com. Our federal government is continuing to work with Black-led organizations and black communities across the country to combat systemic anti-Black racism, support Black economic empowerment, and help promote mental health and wellness. We are dedicated to actively building capacity within Black communities. While Black History Month is a time for learning and celebration, we cannot forget that people of African descent created Black History Month in opposition to anti-Black racism, hate, and discrimination. Inequality, injustice, and inherent privilege still exist in our society, and we must all work together to build a better and more inclusive future for all Canadians. Eat, Drink and Play IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD OUTDOOR SKATING EDITION It’s that time of year again in Canada… Outdoor skating season is here! Grab your friends and family, lace up those skates and let’s enjoy one of the best activities this season has to offer. Below are some places throughout Aurora, East Gwillimbury and Newmarket that you can visit to enjoy the outdoor skating rinks. Registration is not required for any of these rinks, and all municipalities recommend that you wear a helmet while skating. All town rinks are open from 9am - 11pm, 7 days a week, weather and rink conditions permitting. No hockey, stick and puck or other sports are permitted, unless on one of the designated rinks at Machell Park or Ada Johnson Park. Open Rinks: 1. Aurora Town Park (1 Rink - Ez-Rink with boards and liner) 2. Ada Johnson Park (2 Rinks - Ez-Rink with boards and liner) • 1 rink dedicated for pleasure skating • 1 rink dedicated for stick and puck 3. Machell Park (2 Rinks - Ez-Rink with boards and liner) • 1 rink dedicated for pleasure skating • 1 rink dedicated for stick and puck 4. Confederation Park • 1 rink for pleasure skating Please note: The rinks at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Park (Old fashioned rolled rink) and James Lloyd Park (Old fashioned rolled rink over basketball court closes at 10pm) are built and maintained by volunteer groups in the community. When weather conditions are suitable, the volunteer group will start building a rink at these locations. Information on their status will be updated on aurora.ca

EG staff operate and maintain 2 outdoor ice rinks during the winter season. Both are subject to weather conditions and skaters are asked to limit their ice time to 30 minutes to allow others to enjoy the ice. 1. Ridge View Park (Holland Landing) 2. Mount Albert Community Centre For more information, please visit eastgwillimbury.ca

Newmarket’s Riverwalk Commons is open all year round and in the winter months, the Mercedes-Benz Skating and Water Feature is transformed into an outdoor ice rink for all to enjoy. The skating surface is for recreational skating only from 9am - 10pm (no sticks, pucks, balls or nets allowed). After 10pm, Sticks and pucks are permitted to be used. Skaters are reminded to be courteous and respect all skaters, refraining from horseplay. To learn more, please visit newmarket.ca

Outdoor Rink Closures

As the weather begins to get warmer, town staff will continue to monitor rink conditions and will begin closing the rinks for the season, on a location by location basis at any time. WARNING: The municipalities ask residents to be extremely cautious around frozen ponds. Please do not walk, sled or skate on local ponds. This can be extremely dangerous, as some ponds may look safe but under the surface they could have flowing water, which results in a thinner ice surface with unpredictable conditions.

MAYOR TAYLOR Embrace Winter in Newmarket at the Ice Lounge on Main We’re launching an exciting new event this month – Ice Lounge on Main – that will make embracing the Canadian winter even more fun. Along with the downtown businesses, the Town of Newmarket is hosting the Ice Lounge on Main, February 23, 24, and 25. Building on the Town’s award-winning calendar of events, like the summer music series and Splash of Culture, the Ice Lounge on Main will give residents and visitors from near and far another reason to enjoy all that Main Street has to offer, and more …

The Nature's Emporium Run, Walk, Raise for Southlake kicked off on January 22nd at Nature's Emporium. The 2024 Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake, taking place on April 28th is a 5 KM run/walk that follows a route along Davis Drive (Newmarket). It's an incredible day that welcomes the community to walk or run together along Davis Drive (which is shut down for the event). 2024 is a special year for Southlake Hospital as it is celebrating 100 years! Consider registering and raising 100 dollars for the 100 years our hospital has been serving us. Register today at runforsouthlake.ca

Newmarket’s Main Street, which is already a popular community gathering space that attracts over a quarter of a million visitors each year, will host the three-day festival. The entire street will be licensed and will feature outdoor dining, ice bars, fire pits and igloo seating areas, ice sculptures and light installations, live music, magic and fire performances, and, of course, all the great downtown boutiques, shops, and restaurants we love. It will offer everything you need to embrace the chill of winter with the warmth of friends and family. This is sure to be an iconic winter event; an event that residents and visitors will love; one that will bring more people together; an event that will showcase all that the Downtown has to offer; and one that will set a new standard for winter events in the 905! Mark your calendar. I hope to see you there!

Why We Run: The Impact of the Nature’s Emporium Run for SouthlakeRun for Southlake Each year, over 1000 Southlake supporters gather on Davis Drive in Newmarket to spend an incredible morning, running or walking a 5 KM race in support of their hospital. The event, now in its twenty -second year, supports critical needs across the hospital, but Dr. Charmaine van Schaik, Chief of Staff at Southlake, explains what the impact of that support means to her and her clinical colleagues. “The communities we serve are among the fastest growing and aging in Ontario, making Southlake one of the most overcrowded hospitals in the province. Each year, Southlake’s Emergency Department sees more than 115,000 visits. That means a new patient arrives every four and a half minutes. Even so, Southlake still consistently ranks in the top three hospitals for the best Emergency Department assessment times in the province. Results like this are made possible in part thanks to the generosity and commitment of the sponsors and supporters of this event and the thousands of participants who fundraise each year. Your fundraising literally puts tools in the hands of my fellow clinicians so that we can continue to provide the compassionate and excellent care you and your loved ones expect from us.” Whether you participate and fundraise to show your gratitude for the amazing care Southlake has provided to you or a loved one, or to make a difference towards leading edge care for our community, every runner or walker is making an impact at Southlake. The Town of Newmarket's annual Toy & Food Drive was once again a huge success thanks to the support of the community and Town staff. An abundance of toys and non-perishable food items were donated to the Holiday Heroes Campaign in support of the Northridge Community Church of The Salvation Army Central York and the non-perishable food items were donated to the Newmarket Food Pantry. A special shout-out to SE Telecom, who generously donated $10,000 worth of presents for all ages.

Southlake Regional Hospital has Main Street Newmarket Roots The first venture towards establishing a hospital for northern York County (York County was then comprised of what is now York Region and Toronto) was made by Dr. Hutt at his residence on the east side of Main St., just south of the Christian (now Christian Baptist) Church. In 1922, Dr. Dales purchased Dr. Hutt’s property and opened a public hospital in his residence. Shortly after this he applied for, and obtained a charter, and appointed some of Newmarket’s most active and prominent citizens as its board directors. It was this charter that gave the organization the name “York County Hospital” and enabled it to receive financial assistance from the government. A Ladies’ Hospital Aid was established soon after. By 1923, however, York County Hospital was far too crowded and a committee was organized to investigate the possibility and opportunity of relocating to a larger site. Three different residences around Newmarket were chosen and an architect was hired to determine the most suitable site for a new hospital. In the end, the Cane Family residence at the south-east corner of Huron Street (now Davis Drive) and Prospect Street was chosen. An extensive fund-raising project was undertaken, the Cane House was purchased, and two additions were constructed to the residence. During the renovations to the residence, unfortunately, a short-circuit occurred and the original building was destroyed by fire. A new structure was constructed in 1927. A 25-bed hospital whose small size gave it the affectionate name “Cottage Hospital”. As the county grew, so did the hospital. The Margaret Davis wing was added in 1945 and another addition was erected in 1956. This was followed by massive new structures being built to the east of the old hospital, finally taking the form of the current Southlake Regional Health Centre. The original “cottage hospital” was eventually demolished when the original front doors were incorporated into the interior of the new centre lobby at Southlake.

If you could have dinner with one person, dead or alive, who would it be? Alexey Pajitnov, inventor of Tetris. What is one thing that most people don’t know about you? I was almost mistakenly arrested by the US Marine Corps at Ft Meade after a Top Secret presentation. What is your favourite season (winter, spring, summer, fall), and why? Spring - time for renewal and look forward to the Farmers Market. Where is your favourite place to go in the community? Arboretum and Lake Wilcox. How do you give back or pay-it-forward within the community? I donate puzzles and games to local causes.

Richel Tumanguil

Owner of Enriched Med Spa

How do you giveback or pay-it-forward within the community? At Enriched Med Spa, we actively sponsor local events and sports teams, regularly donate to charities and initiatives, and host an annual Diaper Drive at our clinics every December. The collected diapers are donated to a local diaper bank, and last year alone, we were able to contribute over 70 boxes of diapers! If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be? I would encourage my younger self not to fear failure, as it is not the opposite of success but an integral part of the learning process. What is one thing that most people don’t know about you? During high school, I was actively involved in singing and participated in school musicals and choir. While I may not sing as much now, it's a cherished hobby that brings back fond memories. We are so proud to be a part of it. What is your favourite food? It’s not so much about a specific dish, but about the experience surrounding it. Any meal that's shared in the company of good friends and family becomes a favourite. It's the warmth, laughter, and connection that makes any dish special. What is your favourite season (spring, summer, fall, or winter) and why? Fall! There’s something special about the way Mother Nature showcases her brilliance during this time. The transformation of the landscape into a vibrant collection of oranges, reds, and yellows is amazing. My favourite place in the community is Fairy Lake. It offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. What does being a good neighbour mean to you? Says Juliane, “I believe in the power of community and the responsibility we all share to support one another. Giving back is my way of expressing gratitude for all that I have in my life, and it brings me happiness to contribute to the well-being of our amazing community. Hopefully even the smallest of contributions will help to create a stronger and more caring community for everyone. Giving back to an organization like Abuse Hurts is important to me because they provide a lifeline to abused women, helping them regain their strength and independence. In supporting them, it is a commitment to empowering survivors, giving them hope, and ensuring that no one faces the journey to recovery alone.”

After receiving seven skids of feminine hygiene products, Moon Time Connections Ontario - A Project of True North Aid put out a call for volunteers to help pack up the products for First Nations communities in northern Ontario. Big thanks to all the incredible individuals that reached out including CFUW Aurora Newmarket. Period equity in northern communities has different barriers than we don't often see in southern, more urban areas. Access to clean water, the high cost of groceries, and the weather holding back cargo are just a few pieces to the puzzle in accessing menstrual products. Moon Time Connections is battling those barriers as well as the lack of education and awareness that most Canadians have around period inequity in the North. Juliane has definitely shown her support of Abuse Hurts by sponsoring many initiatives, including our Handbags for Hope campaign and Italian-themed fashion show fundraiser in 2023. We’re excited to know she is not just continuing her lifestyle of generosity toward specific initiatives but also enriching the community from an understanding that engaging, collaborating, and networking is what helps us accomplish so much more together than we ever could individually. Thank you, Juliane!

NEIGHBOURHOOD Charity Highlight Mission Thrift Store Newmarket The story of Mission Thrift Store starts back in the summer of 1989. Two businessmen, returning from a mission trip to India with Bible League Canada, wanted to know how they could support the life-changing work they saw happening overseas. A thrift shop came up for sale in Chilliwack, BC, and soon it was launched as the first Bibles for Missions Thrift Store. Over two decades later, stores were rebranded to Mission Thrift Store, and today there are 50 locations serving communities across Canada! The Newmarket location was first opened in 2017 (as the 50th store in Canada), and last year held a grand re-opening in their new, 30,000 sq. ft. location! They have hundreds of new items stocked each day, including clothing, artwork, craft supplies, housewares, toys, and more. Keep an eye out for the upcoming end-of-winter sale! They are also one of the few large thrift stores in the area that accepts furniture donations. In fact, they receive so many great furniture items that a new gallery store was opened last year in the same plaza. The purpose of every Mission Thrift Store is to convert quality used goods into cash to support local needs, divert waste, and provide funding for literacy & community-building programs in almost 50 countries through joint ministry with Bible League Canada. Each store is a not-for-profit organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Support of international mission work is only one aspect of how they help build stronger communities. Locally, they support more than 18 agencies such as Community Living, Inn From The Cold, Victim Services, Aurora’s Seniors Club, and Kerry’s Place. Their support of Bible League Canada also funds Canadian ministry work, including adult literacy programs, prison and campus ministries, and church planting. The environmental impact of Mission Thrift Store’s work is huge. Last year alone, the Newmarket store processed over 300,000 donations, giving quality used goods new life and keeping over 80 tons of material out of the landfill! Plus, along with gift cards their store now offers loyalty customers Mission Thrift Rewards points on donations, giving you more reason to clean out your closet with Mission Thrift! As a community-focused organization, they also believe in the value of volunteering. The Newmarket store has an amazing team of 55 volunteers of all ages. If you are looking for a way to make a difference in your community and around the world – and have fun while you’re at it – apply to be a volunteer today! So, whether you shop, donate or volunteer, you’re saving more than just money at Mission Thrift.
