For the past 16 years, the Holiday Drive has been a dedicated initiative, rooted in community spirit and support for York Region families. It began when Sandy, working for the Board of Education, teamed up with her cousin Penny to assist York Region schools during the holiday season. Two years later, after Sandy’s retirement, they chose to continue the drive independently.
In the first year, the Holiday Drive started with Maple Leaf Public School, assisting 26 families, with the school generously offering workspace to organize and host the initiative. A key partner in this effort, Nathan Pickard, Minister at The Church of Christ in Newmarket, and the congregation played an invaluable role, contributing gift cards and a welcoming breakfast for the families on pick-up day. As the drive expanded, Lynn M., a friend of Sandy and Penny’s for 48 years, joined the team, helping to increase support to 9 schools and 120 families. When COVID-19 restrictions temporarily prevented Maple Leaf PS from hosting, The Church of Christ stepped in, providing a new location for the Holiday Drive (where to-date, they still operate from). Together, the team adapted to the challenges of the pandemic by organizing a drive-through gift pickup. After restrictions were lifted, Lynn W., a retired teacher and former colleague of Sandy’s at Meadowbrook Public School, joined the team, bringing her dedication to this cherished annual initiative.
The Holiday Drive is powered by the generosity of individuals, volunteers, organizations, and local businesses, all working together to make a positive impact. Grateful for the opportunity to serve, this community-minded team of women recognizes the special significance of the holiday season, as well as the challenges that come with this time of year, striving to make Christmas a bit brighter for families in need. With a deep belief that anyone can face hardship at any moment, Sandy, Penny, Lynn M., and Lynn W. are committed to giving back. All lifelong residents of Newmarket, they have also volunteered with the Newmarket Terry Fox Run for the past 14 years, and launched their back-to-school initiative in August (which they hope to make an annual event), where they invited parents and children to shop clothes, backpacks and school supplies - for free, reflecting their steadfast dedication to community support. #GoodNeighbour
Today, the Holiday Drive provides:
• A complete, boxed turkey dinner
• A free shopping day for families
• A book and board game to promote literacy and family bonding time
• A voucher for “No Frills” at Yonge & Davis Drive, courtesy of the Newmarket Lions Club
• Pajamas from “Project Warmth”
• Socks from Juliane Goyette’s “Sock Drive”
From Newmarket Ward 5 Councillor, Bob Kwapis
As 2024 comes to a close, I want to pause and reflect on all that fills me with gratitude.
I'm truly grateful for being part of our remarkable Ward 5 community. Together, we have shown that when we unite and support one another, we flourish. Our togetherness reflects our cherished traditions and shared values, making our community very special.
Newmarket remains a unique blend of small-town warmth and modern conveniences, which enrich our daily lives. In 2024, our spirit of innovation and collaboration was more vibrant than ever, and I feel incredibly blessed to be part of such an extraordinary town—one that is genuinely "Well Beyond the Ordinary."
From my family to yours, we wish you a joyful, healthy, and safe holiday. I look forward with excitement to all the possibilities that 2025 holds for us.

As the holiday season draws near, it brings with it a time of togetherness, joy, and heartfelt reflection. I was personally brought into the Christmas holiday spirit this year when I attended the Keynotes Seniors Choir Christmas Concert held at the Newmarket Seniors Meeting Place on November 24th.
It was so uplifting to listen to the carols, old and new…and I must say, this was the first time I ever heard, ‘Twelve days After Christmas.’ The large crowd gathered was entertained, and a nice bonus was the addition of the Huron Heights High School Music program whose version of the Little Drummer Boy was truly uplifting. Moments like this reminded me of how fortunate we are to live in a community that embraces a wide array of traditions and celebrations. Whether it is gathering with loved ones to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ or the lighting of the candles on the menorah, this season is alive with warmth, music, and the joy of connection shared amongst family, friends, and neighbours.
I would like to wish everyone in Newmarket and Aurora a joyous holiday season. May your spirit be enriched with love, hope, and peace. From my family to yours, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah.
This year, over 150 pumpkins lit up Riverwalk Commons, and 1,500 residents came out to enjoy the Annual Pumpkin Parade on November 1st! This event invites the neighbours to display their carved pumpkins for the community to enjoy, while being entered into a contest to win a prize for the following categories, scariest pumpkin, cutest pumpkin, most creative pumpkin, and jack-of-all-lanterns (best overall). A big thank you to the event sponsor, Juliane Goyette, Financial Advisor with Riverwalk Wealth - Investia, Brian Lavoie, and the Town of Newmarket staff for making this glowing event possible!

As we gather to celebrate the holiday season, I want to extend my warmest wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy Hanukkah to those celebrating in our community. This time of year holds a special meaning for many, giving us a chance to reflect on the values that bring us together.
Christmas and Hanukkah are both reminders of hope and resilience. For those celebrating Christmas, it is a time to remember the message of peace and compassion. The story of Christmas encourages us to give generously and to spread kindness to those around us. For my friends in the Jewish community, may the Festival of Lights bring you joy and prosperity as you celebrate with friends and family.
I encourage you to step out and connect with our community. Whether it is attending local events, supporting small businesses, or volunteering with organizations in need, there are so many ways to make
a difference. As we celebrate the holidays, let us also remember those who may be facing di cult times. This holiday season, we have an opportunity to share our light with others, whether it is through a thoughtful gesture, a donation, or by reaching out to someone who may be alone.
To everyone celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, or simply enjoying the season, I wish you have a memorable time with your loved ones. Let us look to the new year with optimism and a shared commitment to building a stronger, more compassionate community.
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy Holidays!

The holiday season is a time of joy, gratitude, and reflection, making it the perfect opportunity to give back to those in need. Whether through donating to local charities, volunteering your time, or supporting community initiatives, giving back helps spread the spirit of the season to everyone.
Even small acts of kindness can make a big difference, and your generosity will help ensure that no one is left behind during this special time of year. Let’s come together and make this holiday season a little brighter for those who need it most!
There are so many amazing local nonprofit organizations, but we would like to give a special holiday shoutout to our 2024 Charity Community Partners:
This holiday season, NewRoads Automotive Group is proud to support the York Regional Police Holiday Heroes Toy Drive, a crucial initiative that helps thousands of families in need across York Region. From November 12 to December 13, we are collecting donations of new unwrapped toys, new children’s clothing, gift cards, non-perishable food items, and hygiene essentials on behalf of York Regional Police.
As a local business dedicated to giving back, we’re honoured to partner with this impactful campaign. Your donations will go directly to those in need through community partners like the Salvation Army, Victim Services of York Region, and the York Region Centre for Community Safety. Last year, the generosity of local donors allowed the campaign to support 6,300 families victimized by crime and other tragic circumstances.
At NewRoads, we believe in the power of community. By donating to the Holiday Heroes Toy Drive, you’re making a direct and lasting impact on the lives of those who need it most. We invite you to join us in being heroes this holiday season—please drop off your donations at any of our locations and help spread joy to families in need.
Be a hero and donate today.

In early spring, 1946, the concept was born to establish a Newmarket branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. This initiative was spear-headed by far-sighted veterans Howard Brown, Bill LaParde and Bill Denne. Joining their efforts were veterans Jim Forhan, Hunt Taylor and Dr. Gordon Cock. These six veterans became the founding committee which was to evolve into the Newmarket branch. Using the residence of Howard Brown on Davis Drive the growing following deemed necessary taking up headquarters in the “dug-out” of the Old Town Hall on Botsford Street. In June of 1946, a meeting presided over by Zone Commander Bert Phelps saw the election of the first executive of the Newmarket branch. This executive was composed of Ken Stiver (President), Howard Brown (1st Vice-President), Hunt Taylor (2nd Vice-President), Bill LaParde (Secretary-Treasurer) and six executive: Dr. Gordon Cock, Gordon Ough, Aubrey Scythes, Bill Denne, Grant Dillane and Ernie McCaffery. At this meeting the new executive passed a resolution to make an application to Dominion Command for the granting of a charter. The Royal Canadian Legion – Newmarket Branch #426 came into existence on September 18, 1946.
The town approved the use of the old O cer’s Mess on the military camp for the branch to hold meetings. The Legion procured the old mess hall shortly afterwards. Membership grew steadily, Phyllis Brown became the first woman member of the branch and later went on to establish the Ladies Auxiliary. Legion colours were presented to the President by Town Council on March 10, 1947. The charter for the branch was developed in 1948. Under the leadership of Milton Wesley, the old o cer’s mess was moved to its present site and became the first legion hall. On September 2, 1954, the Legion Newmarket Branch #42 was o cially opened. The Legion soon became a recognized and influentially active force in the community. Membership continued to grow and the legion hall was expanded in 1960, the o cial opening of the enlarged hall taking place on September 15, 1962. To celebrate the event, the Newmarket Era & Express printed a special issue celebrating the opening of the new hall. The edition included a message from Prime Minister John Diefenbaker. It was at this time the branch was o cially named the Milton Wesley Branch in recognition of all of Wesley’s hard work towards the progress of the Newmarket Legion. The new hall was named the Harold Eaton Hall, a member of the Newmarket branch and a Provincial Commander. In 1963 the branch was granted its liquor license. Today, 78 years since its establishment, the Milton Wesley Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion continues to loyally serve both veterans and the community. The last couple of decades saw many improvements to the old hall, making great improvements in the area of accessibility to better serve the community and the addition of a new roof.
Remaining faithful to the key principles of the Legion’s articles of faith: remembering Canadians who gave their lives so our nation could be free; loyalty to the sovereign and Canada; safeguarding the rights of the disabled, the widows, widowers and dependents of those who served; encouraging the national and united spirit in Canada, ordered government, peace, goodwill between Canadians and other nations; and advocating the maintenance of adequate defenses and nurturing the spirit of comradeship in the nation both in times of peace and wartime. Throughout its remarkable existence the Milton Wesley Branch has not only remained true to legion principles but has also provided nothing short of excellence in the area of community service to the Town of Newmarket.

On October 23rd, Community Living Central York team members, supported individuals, their families, and employer partners, gathered to honour employers who champion inclusive hiring and recognize the unique strengths of job seekers with intellectual disabilities. Through the CLCY Employment Strategies Program, they are committed to job coaching, career development, and on-the-job support, helping individuals secure meaningful employment and fostering community integration. Together, they're building inclusive workplaces and supporting thriving communities.
This holiday season, give the gift of empowerment and make a lasting impact!
By joining the CLCY Commitment Crew and making a monthly donation, you will help individuals with developmental disabilities access the vital programs, supports and opportunities they need to live independently, pursue their passions, and connect with their community.
$10 per month provides an individual with a full day in a community program, where they can connect, learn, and build friendships.
$35 per month provides access to an 8-week employment skill-building camp, equipping participants with the tools they need to find meaningful employment and greater independence.
Give a gift that matters this holiday season. Your monthly donation will help us build a stronger, more inclusive community! Together, we can make a di erence.
Shop local for everything on your list
As we make our lists and check them twice, remember shopping local is very nice.
Newmarket stores offer everything from this year’s must-have gifts to unique items for the hard-to-buy-for on your list. We're also fortunate to have a diverse selection of restaurants, grocers, and caterers in Town to help make holiday get-togethers memorable.
In addition to wonderful memories, choosing local this holiday season can have a powerful impact. When people shop local, more money stays in Town, giving the community a boost, supporting jobs, and sustaining shops and services closer to home. Events, charities, and minor sports also benefit greatly from the support of local businesses, so shopping with them helps kids to stay active and have fun, as well as supporting those less fortunate. This “multiplier effect” grows a more resilient local economy, encourages entrepreneurship, and builds a more inclusive and compassionate community.
Local businesses also serve as social hubs and foster a sense of belonging. Think about the number of people you bump into at the mall and how much of a dining and entertainment destination the Main Street area has become.
The Town, Main Street, and Chamber of Commerce make it easy to find local shops and services with online business directories on newmarket.ca, newmarketmainstreet.com, and centralyorkchamber.ca.
I’ll certainly be heading to Main Street for my Christmas shopping. I encourage everyone to choose local, help our business community thrive, and make Newmarket an even more prosperous and vibrant place to live, work, and raise a family.

For some Starlight children, this was their first time experiencing Halloween, as accessibility or health risks prohibit door-to-door trick-or-treating. This event is designed exclusively for Starlight children to trick or treat indoors at a local hotel and then enjoy an overnight stay - not in hospital, but in a hotel suitewith their families. Residents dogtales.ca
Romeo, Romeo, where art thou, Romeo? Here I am! If you're searching for a handsome little guy to steal your heart, look no further. I'm a neutered male Shih Tzu with a sweet disposition to match my charming name. I have allergies, which are managed with daily medication and a vegetarian diet. Due to this routine, my skin has greatly improved, and the frequency of my medicated baths has been reduced. I also have dry eye and will need daily eye drops long-term to keep me comfortable. Recently, I underwent surgery to remove a mast cell tumor from my leg, and we are awaiting the results to determine if the surgery was fully successful. I am looking for a dedicated and peaceful home where I can spend my golden years surrounded by love and comfort. Could that be with you?
I'm Raya! My story is as heart-wrenching as it is inspiring. One look into my soulful brown eyes, and you’ll see my longing for a family who will fill my world with love. Diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot (an extremely rare congenital heart defect) my condition is, unfortunately, beyond the help of surgery or medication. We anticipate that within six months, I may face congestive heart failure or sudden cardiac arrest. My heart condition has also prevented further investigation of the deformities in my hind legs, which give me a unique gait but add to my charm. I would thrive as the only pet in a quiet home with no stairs, where I can enjoy peaceful days filled with love and care. Could you be the one to provide me with the comfort, affection, and joy I deserve, for however much time I have left?
Hello, I’m Skye. I’m a 4 month old Black Lab and American Bulldog mix adopted from Lost Boys Hope Rescue. I’m a bit of a social butterfly, and if you walk by and don’t say “hello” I’ll just sit and stare at you patiently until you notice me… no really, I won’t move until you say hi. I am always ready for adventure whether it’s running around in the yard, chasing after my ball, or going on hikes. But, I’m also in the middle of teething, so my mouth is always looking to nibble on everything I can get my paws on. It might be a little too much, but I promise I am just trying to feel better as my new teeth come in. I am loving every moment of puppy life with my Mama Mylee and the Goyette family. The ‘Skye’ is the limit.
Woof - I'm Pickles! A 2.5 year old German Rottweiler. My mom says that I am the dog version of Albert Einstein. I am incredibly loving, stubborn and curious. If you have food, I am your new best friend! But now that all the niceties are out of the way, my mom also says that I am a crazy girl (absolutely insane, actually). I also see myself as a lapdog, and you can't tell me otherwise - if you're not strong enough to hold me, that's your fault, not mine!
Hi there, I'm Shilo! I am a 3 year old German Shepherd. I'm told that I have the cutest puppy/human eyes that will make anyone’s heart melt. I love playing ball, enjoy being around people, and to say the least, I can't get enough tummy rubs. I'm a bit of a picky eater, and believe that my mom and I must eat togetherotherwise I will refuse to eat my meals. I'm a loyal boy and will follow you everywhere you go, so that you will always feel protected when I'm around.
I'm Storm, a 10 year old Siberian Husky! I am the true definition of a strong female, who takes absolutely no BS from anyone. I enjoy my quiet time very much, and do not accept any nonsense. I'm not a big hugger and am content with the smallest things. My mom says that I am a “tank”, as I can eat anything and everything, at any time. I'm not shy when it comes to food and my body can handle it all. I'm also referred to as being the most stubborn dog you will meet... it's either my way or the highway. You may say that it's my world, and everyone else is just living in it!

Mayor Virginia Hackson shared updates on key initiatives and priorities, including the upcoming Health and Active Living Plaza, a landmark facility set to open in 2025. As the holidays draw near, it’s a season of celebration for many. However, for young pregnant and parenting mothers facing challenges, it can be a time of stress and uncertainty. At Rose of Sharon, we provide a welcoming, safe, and supportive space for these mothers through our free programs and high school, helping them feel empowered and cared for on their motherhood journey.
This holiday season, you can help our young families experience the joy they deserve through 3 impactful ways:
1. Family Care Package Supplies
Food insecurity affects 1 in 5 children in Ontario, including the little ones in our care. Each month, we deliver Family Care Packages to 150 families in need. We are urgently seeking non-perishable food, baby formula, diapers, and hygiene products for both moms and babies to replenish our supplies.
2. Grocery Cards for Holiday Meals
Our dream is for every mother to prepare a warm, festive meal for her family. With a goal to provide $100 in grocery cards to each of the 150 families in our food insecurity program, your generosity can turn this dream into reality.
3. Financial Donations
Your financial support ensures our programs remain free and accessible when young mothers need them most. Your donation directly supports the well-being of our families.
Every contribution, big or small, creates a brighter holiday season for Rose of Sharon young families. Contact us: information@roseofsharon.com | www.roseofsharon.com

Cold and gloomy weather can sometimes dampen our spirits, but with a bit of planning, you can maintain a sense of well-being no matter the forecast! Here are three tips to help you stay optimistic during this season:
Plan Something to Look Forward To
Even the anticipation of a fun activity can enhance joy—did you know that it actually releases dopamine in the brain which makes the thought of something as pleasurable as experiencing it? Plan activities that make you smile; whether it’s brunch with friends, a movie night or a video call with grandkids, staying connected can help ward off seasonal loneliness.
Eat Fresh-From-The-Freezer for Good Health
Stock up on frozen vegetables, fruits, and meats so you’ll always have food on hand. Conveniently, these items are typically frozen at their peak freshness. Consider batch-cooking meals to freeze, so you’ll have tasty, nourishing, ready-made portions to enjoy.
Leverage Technology for Social Connection
Learning to use video calling platforms or social media may seem overwhelming, but it helps maintain connections with family and friends. Many community centres and libraries offer free classes to help you become more comfortable with technology. As your confidence grows, you’ll be better able to stay connected, even when the weather makes it challenging to get outside.

The Town of East Gwillimbury unveiled the Holding Hope art sculpture at Children of Peace Park (68 Sharonview Crescent) on October 21st. This permanent art piece was designed by Kyle Thornley and symbolizes resilience, growth and optimism. The sculpture, which is made entirely of metal and features a hand grasping a mature dandelion with 150 seeds, speaks to the stories and rich history that our community holds, as well as the seeds we plant as we continue to grow. The sculpture was selected by residents through a survey and consultation process, where they decided between two art pieces, ultimately selecting Holding Hope. Kyle Thornley is an artist blacksmith who, for the last 18 years, has been creating art with metals through commissioned pieces, architectural metalwork, exhibitions, and public art.

December is a time for holidays, celebrations, traditions and getting together with family and friends. We reached out to our Routes Connecting Communities staff, volunteers and clients and asked about favourite cultural or holiday traditions. We’d like to share some of the responses with you.
“New Years Eve is the big day for us in our Hispanic/Latino community and when the family gathers after going to a late church service (typically 9pm). Baby Jesus gets placed into the nativity scene symbolizing his birth. Kids get to open gifts from family members after midnight (with the exception of Santa's gifts or the three kings which happens on Jan 6) . We eat "dinner" after church so it tends to be around 11pm and is traditionally tamales.”
“Putting up Christmas lights on my mom's house with my sisters!”
“We welcome winter, according to a fictional story, and grandparents typically narrate tales of older times. Yalda Night is a night that is quite close to Christmas Eve.”
“One of my favourite holiday traditions is volunteering at the local nursing home late on Christmas Eve to deliver the gifts for residents from their families & community. This will be my 10th year doing it (wow, time flies!)”
“What has always stood out to me is the unique, heartwarming positivity that envelops the town during Christmas. It is not merely the festive lights and decorations that make this season magical, but the genuine kindness and generosity that people extend to one another. This spirit of goodwill transforms the atmosphere, making it a truly special time of year.”
Best wishes for a safe, healthy holiday season!

Like many in our community I enjoyed participating in The Newmarket and Aurora Santa Claus Parades. To the organizers, thank you for all that you do – the parades are always outstanding.
And once again, the spirt of community was overwhelming.
The floats and organizations that make the parade such a special event deserve our thanks. The thousands of people who line the parade route remind us of our wonderful community spirit but also of the magical feelings that define the holidays.
But we also know, that for many, the spirit of the season, the joy of the holidays can be a di cult time.
Fortunately, we live in a giving community with organizations prepared to make sure the holidays are for everyone. I was pleased to participate in the launch of The York Regional Police Holiday Heroes campaign following the parade in Newmarket – a program that has been able to help approximately 100,000 individuals and families in need since the program launched 28 years ago.
Neighborhood Network has launched their annual Holiday Gift Drive. Last year, with the incredible generosity of our community, Neighbourhood Network’s Holiday Gift Drive brought joy to over 440 individuals. There are many programs to support, such as the annual Salvation Army’s Christmas Kettle Campaign or support for the local food pantry. Many service organizations run their own holiday gift/food drives; I encourage you to support if you can.
To quote Dr. Seuss: “Christmas Day will always be Just as long as we have we.” May your holidays be blessed with good health and time with loved ones.
The second annual Community Living Central York Christmas Market lit up November 9th with creativity and community spirit! Featuring stunning artwork by Community Living supported individuals and over 40 awesome local vendors, it was a heartwarming celebration of talent and togetherness.

In the case of Bessie and Heba, the Chamber didn’t just enhance their businesses—it brought two wonderful families together and helped them form a lasting friendship.
When Royal LePage real estate agent Bessie Correa and Heba Fawzy, Senior HR Manager at FLOW Water, joined the Aurora Chamber of Commerce, they aimed to grow their networks and enhance their careers. Little did they know the Chamber would also bring them closer on a personal level.
Bessie, a proud Aurorian for 16 years, has built her real estate career around helping families find their perfect homes. For her, the Chamber’s focus on building meaningful relationships aligns with her values of community and connection. Heba, on the other hand, moved to Aurora in 2021 from Dubai, leaving behind her friends, family, and network. Starting over in a new country and balancing a new job with settling her family was a big challenge.
The two women had briefly crossed paths at school pick-up, as their teenage daughters—now good friends—attend the same school. But it wasn’t until an Aurora Chamber event, where they posed for a photo with Mayor Marakas, that they truly connected and realized their daughters were friends.
For Heba, the Chamber became more than just a professional network—it was a way to feel at home in a new community. For Bessie, it reinforced the Chamber’s true purpose: fostering connections that go beyond business. The Aurora Chamber isn’t just about business growth; it’s about building a network of like-minded people and enriching the community.
In bringing Bessie and Heba together, the Chamber helped two families form a lasting friendship, proving that its impact reaches far beyond business.
The annual Abuse Hurts Handbags of Hope campaign, once again brought the community together to support women in need this holiday season. In collaboration with the Bradford Women's+ Group, the initiative aimed to gather and fill 350 purses with toiletries, personal care items, makeup, and hand-written messages of hope. Donations are then distributed through Abuse Hurts to various women’s shelters across the region.
Throughout November, community members contributed generously, leading up to a special purse packing party hosted by the Bradford Women’s+ Group on December 1st. Volunteers spent an uplifting afternoon carefully preparing purses, which were then delivered to Abuse Hurts. Many of these gift-filled purses will be given to local women as part of the Abuse Hurts’ toy drive, bringing surprise moments of kindness to mothers picking up gifts for their children. Through Handbags of Hope, these women are reminded that someone was thinking of them, too.

If you could have dinner with one person, dead or alive who would it be?
My Mom. She passed away when I was 23. I would love to have dinner with her.
What does being a good neighbour mean to you?
A good neighbour says hello, stops to chat at the end of the driveway, brings in your recycle bins when you’re away, keeps an eye on things, lends a hand, and if you’re on my awesome street, invites me to our annual street party!
How do you giveback or pay-it-forward within the community?
My friend Theresa and I started PROJECT WARMTH. We discovered kids in our community were going to school without socks or essential clothing for winter and so we decided to help. Through Project Warmth, we collect lightly used winter coats and boots, sponsor 40+ children and buy all of their new winter clothing needs and purchase 200+ new pairs of pjs for kids in Aurora and Newmarket annually. It’s a small way of making sure every child stays warm and dry during the winter!
