BIRTHDAY WISHES FROM OUR NEIGHBOURS

Congratulations, Neighbour Media, on two years of community news and impactful storytelling! Your dedication keeps us informed, engaged, and connected. Thank you for uplifting local voices and addressing community issues here in Aurora. Here's to many more years of success and service to our neighbourhood. Happy birthday and continued success ahead!

Hi Neighbours,

Welcome to the April edition of the Neighbour Paper. This month the Neighbour Media team is celebrating another lap around the sun, and the completion of our second year in business! The continued support that we have received from our community partners and the neighbourhood, is so deeply appreciated. We wouldn’t be able to do what we do, without all of you!

We couldn’t be happier to be continuing this journey with you, and are looking forward to what is to come in year 3 and beyond.

Besides our birthday - here are a few other things to celebrate this month:

The month of April is World Autism Awareness Month, an annual opportunity for a dedicated conversation about autism spectrum disorder. April 2nd is World Autism Day.

While Good Friday and Easter Sunday fell in March this year, Easter Monday is April 1st. Which we all know is also a fun day of mischief and practical jokes… April Fools Day!

National Canadian Film Day is April 17th! A massive, one-day, coast-to-coast-to-coast celebration of Canadian cinema. Launched in 2014, CanFilmDay has brought together hundreds of thousands of Canadians to celebrate our stories and the incredible achievements of our filmmakers.

Ramadan is the most sacred month of the Islamic calendar, symbolizing the cleansing of the heart and mind. Observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection and community, it began this year on the evening of March 10th, continuing until the evening of April 9th.

April also marks Earth Month, with Earth Day falling on April 22nd. A time to raise environmental awareness and create consciousness around the issues that affect mother nature during this time of crisis.

International Dance Day is a global celebration of dance! It takes place every year on April 29th, which is the anniversary of the birth of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727–1810), who is considered to be the "father" of modern ballet (classical or romantic ballet as we know it today)

Each month the Neighbour Paper will make you smile!

BILAL'S OTF TRANSFORMATIVE JOURNEY

Transformation; a dramatic change in thought, appearance and or feeling. Going to Orangetheory Newmarket – Aurora has transformed my appearance, thought and feeling about working out to the point where if I do not come in one day I feel disconnected. Su ering from weight issues for the majority of my life Orangetheory had come in like a saviour. The workout consists of an equal amount of cardio and weight training, helping to not only lose weight/fat but also build muscle in the process.

Having lost over 120+ pounds, feeling better about myself and the food I eat - I cannot recommend Orangetheory enough. I would like to take the opportunity to thank The Lord for giving me the ability to attend such a great community filled with support and motivation. Thank you to Joe, Chris, Matt, Ricky, Ryan, Michelle, Karlie, Izzy and to all the OTF sta for having such a facility which helps people like me believe there is hope, support and motivation that even after being around 300 pounds there is always room to start and join the community. Now I ask you, heading into this new year, how many of you want to change your lives?

Alex’s Inspiring Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake Story

Alex is not one to sit down and let life pass him by, even when stage three esophageal cancer tried to slow him down.

A Newmarket resident for nearly 20 years, Alex was diagnosed in April 2023. After six weeks of daily radiation, weekly chemotherapy and surgery, Alex hoped that would be it. But post-surgery, his doctors found two lymph nodes that were cause for concern.

Currently, Alex is doing weekly chemotherapy treatment at Southlake. Being a restless person, he spends the treatment hours walking around the unit, getting his steps in. It’s why Alex’s social worker Katie asked him to join the Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake and the “Cancer Centre Cruisers” team.

“It was an instant yes,” a rms Alex.

Participating in the Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake is not only a way for Alex to thank all the nurses, doctors, staff, and volunteers caring for him through his cancer journey, but also a way to ensure future patients at Southlake receive the same incredible care he has received. So far, he’s raised over $1,200!

“It seems overwhelming at first but once you get started, it’s easy going,” says Alex. “Don’t underestimate the kind-hearted people who will be inspired by your Southlake story. Everyone has one, and mine is still ongoing. Start with family and friends and as people talk, others will come together to support you.”

Join Alex and hundreds of others in our community, supporting leading edge care, close to home at Southlake. Register today at: www.runforsouthlake.ca

March break was a great time to connect with constituents in our community. I enjoy knocking on doors every month as this gives me an opportunity to engage directly with you and talk about your most pressing concerns.

I also love celebrating the accomplishments of our wonderful citizens. I met with Ruby Lappin who won a silver medal in curling at the Special Olympics recently held in Calgary. We gathered at Newmarket’s Mission Thrift Store where Ruby volunteers three days a week. They brought out the “bubbly” for Ruby and we did a big sparkling water cheer for Ruby to toast her medal win in Alberta.

The luck of the Irish was with me at the Aurora Legion for their St. Patrick’s Day Shamrock Event. Imagine going out for a fun evening, then running into a lady who is from Donegal, Ireland, the same place my family is from! We had a great chat and a terrific dinner featuring some tasty Irish dishes, then it was off to the dance floor where a 78-year-old party goer put on a show that had us all up cheering and clapping.

We’re so fortunate to celebrate, live and work in Newmarket-Aurora but it is the spirit and good hearts of the people that make me the proudest MPP at Queen’s Park. I’m looking forward to meeting and talking with you soon as we Build Our Community Together.

To schedule a meeting, email my o ce at dawn.gallaghermurphy@pc.ola.org or call 905-853-9889.

MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy announced that the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, will be investing $200,000 through the Ontario Trillium Foundation’s Resilient Communities Fund stream into the Canadian Mental Health Association York Region and South Simcoe (CMHA-YRSS). CMHA-YRSS will be using this two-year grant to help expand services within our free Gender A rming Health Clinic, providing tiered-level mental health and medical services to the transgender community.

The Aurora Black Community kicked off March Break with Diversity on the Ice! This event is a celebration of unity, breaking barriers, and embracing the rich tapestry of our community and being Canadians. As we continue to honour Black History 365, this event underscores the importance of inclusivity in every aspect of our lives. Skating symbolizes togetherness, where individuals of all backgrounds come together to share in the joy of movement. It's a powerful reminder that diversity isn't just welcomed – it's essential for creating a vibrant and harmonious community. In addition, ABC awarded two young entrepreneurs, signed by Dahliah & Eksplosive Academy, grants for their business goals.

Construction Restoration Q & A with telMAX

In the spirit of spring and starting the season anew, this month telMAX wants to answer some questions you may have regarding construction restoration.

1. How will you repair any damage done to my lawn?

In spring, as the ground thaws, we'll be laying seed and topsoil to repair areas where grass was damaged during installation. Our telMAX crew on site will water the area the same day. We politely request homeowners to continue watering the area to ensure continued growth.

2. I’ve just had telMAX installed at my home, but they were unable to dig the frozen ground. When will this get fixed?

We're dedicated to restoring your property and safely burying all fibre connections to your home.

Once the weather permits and the ground thaws, our teams will get to work restoring your property to municipal standards and ensuring the safety of the residents.

3. How should I let telMAX know if I want to discuss any construction issues?

If you have experienced any issues during the construction process, please send an email including the following to either cc@telmax.com or support@telmax.com:

• Your name (first and last)

• Your street address and town/city and postal code

• Your phone number

• Any pictures of the damage (if possible)

To learn more about our construction and restoration process, please visit us at www.telmax.com/fibre-rollout or call us at (905)-640-7377.

Claude

I'm Claude - a very excitable guy! I'm looking for a family that can keep up with my needs, and in return I will bring you happiness with my fun energy! I love going for walks and getting lots of treats. My favourite thing in the whole world is playing with other dogs - big, small, young or old... I get along with just about any dog! In order for me to thrive in my future home, I need a family with experience with large breeds, behavioural challenges/separation anxiety, and who is home often.

Hi there, my name is Arlo! I am a mini Australian Shepherd puppy and I have lots of positive energy to share with the world. I love to run, play and be goofy with all of my furry friends! Woof!

Woof! Hi - I'm Bu ynn, the Saintberdoodle! I am told that I give the best hugs and kisses, and that I have personality to spare! When you walk into my house, there is no way that you can ignore my gorgeous face... I will make sure of it!!

I'm Juneau, a spunky lady who doesn’t act my age! I'm bouncy, active, and will be vocal when I want your attention - I'm told that I have the cutest “aawwwoo”. My beautiful blue eyes draw everyone in, I am friendly and gentle with all people, especially small children. I was surrendered to Dog Tales after my furry sibling passed away. I became quite anxious when left alone, so my family didn't want me anymore. I was extremely underweight, but am now slowly gaining weight. I am looking for a family who is home often, doesn't have other dogs/cats, and will be patient and be willing to work on my house training.

Hi friends! My name is Magnus... My mom calls me Magnus the Magnificent! I am a 4 year old Shih Tzu, Maltese, and Yorkie mix. I am a shy guy, but I have a lot of love to give. I love treats, my girlfriend (my favourite stuffed animal that I have had since I was a puppy), cuddling with my mom, and playing with my little brother, Stoli!

Giuseppe

Hi! My name is Giuseppe. But you can call me Pepe. I was born in Hamilton, now I go between Newmarket and Georgina. I can’t wait for the farmers markets to begin again so that I can scare off the big dogs and get fresh bones from the “Bone Man”. You may think that I am small... but I have a big personality and I am not scared of anything!

Letter from MAYOR MRAKAS

Spring into action with us!

April is here and it's time to embrace the vibrant energy of spring. So, grab your calendar and join us as we embrace the nicer weather and work to get our Town clean and green at our events this month.

First up is our annual Community Clean Up. As the ground thaws and the snow shovels get put away for the season, it is time to get our Town clean and we need your help. Last year, we collected over a tonne of garbage thanks to your participation. So, join us again on Saturday, April 20 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sign up individually or as a group at cleanup@aurora.ca. Participants will receive a cleanup kit (while supplies last) that includes two garbage bags, a recycling bag, one pair gloves and safety tips. For high school students, this is also a great way to earn those coveted volunteer hours!

Then on Sunday, April 28 we have the most electrifying event of the year- our 3rd annual Electric Vehicle Showcase. Back bigger and better than ever, this year’s free event has moved indoors at the Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex. Experience and drive electric cars, test out e-bikes, e-scooters and micro-mobility cars, enjoy a huge kids zone and learn about all things electric at the Speakers’ Stage. For more details, visit: aurora.ca/EVshowcase. I hope to see you at these events!

As always, I encourage residents and businesses to reach out to me at any time either by phone, through social media or in-person. I look forward to keeping everyone informed and engaged – #gettingthingsdone

A Message from MP Leah Taylor Roy

Hello Neighbours, Spring is here in Aurora—Oak Ridges—Richmond Hill, a time for new beginnings. I am reminded of the power of renewal and the importance of unity. This season, we are celebrating a mosaic of traditions: Nowruz, Easter, Passover, Holi and Eid Al-Fitr. Each of these festivals, with its distinct heritage and message, contributes to the rich diversity of our community, embodying hope, rebirth, and togetherness. On April 17th, we also celebrate the 42nd anniversary of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom. Our Charter also contributes to this sense of community and togetherness by ensuring that all Canadians, regardless of who they are, enjoy the same rights.

With Earth Day on April 22, it is imperative to rea rm our dedication to our environment and planet. The challenges of climate change demand our united efforts, and I am inspired by the actions our community has taken to meet the challenges of climate change. Together, we are making a difference, from local green initiatives to national policies aimed at reducing our carbon footprint and preserving our natural landscapes.

As an environmentalist and Member of Parliament, I am proud of the strides our government has made in combating climate change and protecting our environment. Our commitment extends to restoring water quality and ecosystem health, particularly in Lake Simcoe, and enhancing engagement with Indigenous Peoples. The initiatives we support are designed to safeguard our planet for future generations and to foster a sense of responsibility and stewardship among us all.

While our spring celebrations highlight the diversity of Canada, our concerted efforts to protect our green spaces and biodiversity underscore our shared commitment to important issues facing us all.

I am honored to represent a community rich in diversity and dedicated to making a positive impact and to be your voice in Ottawa.

My team and I are dedicated to supporting you. If you have any inquiries, concerns, or feedback, please contact my Constituency o ce. For updates, please visit www.leahtaylorroymp.ca and follow my social media channels. I also look forward to seeing you out in the community enjoying the beautiful spring weather.

March 15th marked a pivotal moment in Canada’s climate resilience efforts. Alongside Parliamentary Secretary Adam van Koeverden, MP Leah Taylor Roy led the announcement of the completion of the Federal Governments $180.4-million weather radar modernization project. The C-band Doppler radar is a central feature of the King City Weather Radar Station, it includes a dual polarization technology. It is used to provide data for weather forecasting, climate prediction research, and satellite applications. Dual polarization technology provides weather forecasters with new information so they can more accurately identify, track, assess, and warn the public of high-impact

weather. A BIG Neighbour Media shout-out to everyone who participated in the Coldest Night of the Year in support of Blue Door! On February 24th, we visited Richmond Hill to cover the Blue Door walk. A big thank you to all the sponsors, supporters, and volunteers who made the walk such a huge success. Blue Door is a leader in preventing and ending homelessness! In collaboration with the Aurora Whisky Society and Chef Roger Wakileh, the unforgettable evening was filled with education, enlightenment, flavour, and philanthropy.

There’s a brand-new summer day camp for pre-teens at Pickering College’s outdoor education property, just ten minutes from its Newmarket campus.

Harvest Hub @ Blue & Silver Farm provides tweens with a unique opportunity to engage with nature and learn about food sources through hands-on experiences like caring for chickens, cultivating the learning garden, and exploring forest trails through exciting games and challenges.

Campers can unleash their creativity in outdoor art sessions, including photography, pottery, and painting, before assisting with harvesting and preparing fresh seasonal vegetables from the garden to complement their nutritious lunch, catered by Frank’s Organic Garden.

Thursday evenings are a special treat as campers stay overnight in cozy tents in the meadow, after enjoying a rustic dinner, stargazing hike, and campfire tales.

Homebuyers and sellers:

Tips to prepare for the spring market

Homebuyers:

1. Secure a mortgage pre-approval: Starting the home buying process with a mortgage pre-approval is crucial. It positions you as a serious contender in the eyes of sellers and may protect you in the event rates start to rise.

2. Understand the market: Familiarize yourself with the local real estate market trends, including average home prices, inventory levels and the average time homes spend on the market for optimal negotiation strategy. I can make a great referral!

3. Consider future needs: Think long-term about your housing needs to save costly future moves. Factors like family planning, work-from-home requirements, and lifestyle should play into your decision-making process.

Home Sellers:

1. Get a mortgage pre-approval: As a seller, you should also secure a mortgage pre-approval. This step is vital for making timely offers once your current home is sold.

2. Investigate mortgage porting: Understanding mortgage portability is essential and may ease transition to your new property but it may also make sense to break your existing term. As a mortgage broker I can educate you on your current mortgage and all your options.

3. Find a reliable Realtor partner: Choosing the right real estate agent is critical for a smooth sale. A good agent can significantly impact your selling price and timeliness of sale. I can make a great referral!

4. Prepare home for sale: Address repairs, declutter, and consider staging. Investing in professional photography can also showcase the property in its best light online, where most buyers start their search.

Letter from MAYOR HACKSON

Spring into celebration and join us for fun events taking place in East Gwillimbury this month!

Spring has sprung and we’re gearing up for an April filled with fun for all to enjoy. During this month East Gwillimbury and beyond will be celebrating an important group of individuals who generously donate their time and talents to their communities all year round.

April marks National Volunteer Week (NVW), which recognizes and celebrates the contributions of all community volunteers from Council Appointed Committees, local sports organizations, local groups, and more. The theme for 2024 is “Every Moment Matters”, which highlights the importance of the contributions volunteers make during moments when others need support. Sharing their time, skills, empathy, and strength leads to making a real difference where we all live, work, and play.

On Monday, April 15 we will celebrate our amazing group of volunteers at our annual appreciation dinner to be held at the Sports Complex. The event will be an opportunity to share, learn, and reflect on the important work this group of individuals does throughout the year.

Another important event coming up that I’m excited about is EG’s first-ever Earth Weekend! From April 20 to 22 all are welcome to celebrate and learn more about our environment and participate in a variety of community events. The weekend kicks off on Saturday, April 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with an Eco Fair featuring electronic waste collection, local organizations promoting environmental programs, native flower planting, workshops, and more! On Sunday, April 21 join in on our Community Cleanup from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants can pick up kits at the Sports Complex, Holland Landing Community Centre, or Ross Family Complex and collect litter and debris in areas within their ward. The final event will take place on Earth Day, April 22 at 9 a.m. with a flag raising at the Civic Centre.

I encourage you to join us for this exciting weekend of environmental events to connect with your neighbours and engage in learning opportunities on how we can all help protect our environment. Additional details are available on our website at www.eastgwillimbury.ca/environment

Happy spring!

Cristian Baptist Church

The Christian Baptist Church on Main St. Newmarket, is one of the town’s most familiar landmarks. Originally, simply the “Christian Church”, it was the third structure built on the top of the Main St. hill, where “man could be close to God”. It had its own burial ground to the east of the church. The Christian Church congregation had American roots, and dates back to 1822 in the Newmarket area.

A local man, T.B. Wakefield, left $10,000 in his will for the construction of a new church (the 3rd and current structure). Mr. Wakefield had very specific wishes for the new structure and the church, completed in 1874, was built faithfully to his guidelines. His son-in-law, Brooks Howard, would donate another $4,000 for completing the interior and purchasing a pipe organ. The church was designed by architect John T. Stokes of Sharon, who took the wishes of the Wakefield family and incorporated them into an imposing structure. Constructed in the revivalist style titled “First Point Gothic”, the contractor for the new church was Jacob Johnson. The laying of the corner stone on June 25, 1874, was surrounded by much pomp and ceremony. Six triumphal evergreen arches were erected over Main St. as the town welcomed the Earl of Dufferin, Governor General, who performed the ceremony. The occasion also marked the first time the song “The Maple Leaf Forever” was sung as composer Alexander Muir brought his students down from his local public school to sing. The photo pictured here appeared on a postcard around 1905. Made of locally-constructed buff bricks with red accent patterns. The steeple contains a 1200 lb. bell and built for the accommodation of a four-face clock (never installed).

The church became the Christian Baptist Church in 1949. Though many architectural changes throughout the years, the church remains a Newmarket landmark. Currently led by the spiritual guidance of Pastor Andrew Hamilton, the church survives as a testament to its architect and builder, the generosity of the Wakefield and Howard families and its caring congregations over the years.

“Have you ever seen a movie that spoke to your soul? A movie that you've never forgotten because it made such an impact in your life? My movie is Made In Heaven with Timothy Hutton and Kelly McGillis from 1987. I remember watching this movie on a Saturday afternoon when I was 15 years old. It opened up a whole new world to me that our "Soulmate" is out there and everything we do in life is connected. I was just gifted this DVD for my birthday and cried tears of joy being able to see it again. I'm still looking for my soulmate, but I know everything happens in divine timing.

Our inspiration for this page comes directly from Bert and John Jacobs - the founders of Life is Good. As kids at the dinner table, their mom would ask them to "tell me something good that happened today". This simple question encourages us all to see the positive side of life.

Our customers frequently share their 'something good' with us when they come into the storeit's one of the things we love about what we do. And as the world becomes increasingly negative, it’s important that we spread some positivity and good vibes.

Support a Night with Inn From the Cold

A warm safe place to sleep, nutritious meals, access to laundry and shower facilities, these things may not seem like a privilege, but for many they are.

The Support a Night initiative at Inn From the Cold ensures that we are able to address both the basic needs of individuals experiencing homelessness and the root causes of homelessness, the first steps to achieving housing security.

A safe, inclusive space without any judgment is sometimes all the nudge a person needs to gather the courage to rebuild their life. Being able to provide this safe space since 2004 has been the driving force behind each one of us, be it the employees or the volunteers at Inn From the Cold.

Inn From the Cold and this initiative relies on the tremendous support we get from our incredible community. Social change takes time but when communities like ours start working together, we believe half the battle is won.

Months of memories on tap

With the days getting longer and the temperatures getting warmer, our parks, trails, streets, and outdoor spaces are getting more and more active. It won’t be long until the vibrancy of Newmarket will be on full display in our parks and public spaces, as well as on patios and at events. There will again be lots of reasons to get and enjoy all the Newmarket has to offer in the coming months.

Newmarket’s summer events season will soon be under way, offering opportunities to get together with family, friends and neighbours. For the second year running, the Town was named Municipality of the Year by Festival and Events Ontario for offering events like the Thursday night concert series, Moonlight Movies, Night Market, Touch-a-Truck, Busk ‘til Dusk and New Bark It, all of which will be back over the next few months, along with festivals like Canada Day and Pride.

Speaking of award-winning, The Farmers’ Market, which was just named Market of the Year for Ontario, will be back for its 25th season in May. It’s amazing that this popular gathering place has been a part of so many residents' Saturday routines for a quarter of a century now.

Restaurant patios will be open next month including those downtown where there will be a couple of additional patios.

If you are looking for a more serene place to spend some time, check out our parks and trails or the York Region Forest, which celebrates its 100th birthday this year. That forest network includes 150 kms of trails across 22 wooded tracts.

Newmarket has something for everyone. Our events and outdoor spaces offer great places to get together with family and friends and create memories. I hope to see you around town over the coming months!

The annual NewRoads Girls' Night Out event was hosted on March 6th at NewRoads Performing Arts Centre! The Pyjama Party was a huge success, supporting women-owned businesses, as well as Girls Inc. of York Region. There was delicious food from A Million Mouthfuls Catering, amazing vendors, a group of incredible women, and an inspiring discussion with Zoë Paliare.

A Message From MP Tony Van Bynen

As I think about how our government has worked to build a stronger, healthier Canada, I find myself reflecting on the work we have done to support families. Sir Winston Churchill wrote “There is no doubt that it is around the family and the home that all the greatest virtues, the most dominating virtues of human, are created and maintained.” I believe we have had a strong focus on family and have introduced many programs with the intention to provide the kind of support needed to allow families to thrive.

Our signature childcare support has provided huge financial relief while providing opportunity for more women to engage in building a stronger economy. Our Canada Child Benefit has helped lift hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty. Our initial dental benefit allowed many children to receive dental care, leading to healthier outcomes. Our new Canada Dental Plan extends that reach and will include the eldest members of family – our seniors in the plan.

Strong families help build healthier communities and caring, engaged communities support family growth. We are fortunate to live in the communities that make up this community. Newmarket and Aurora are wonderful places to raise a family and for a family to call home. I am grateful for the support our government has given to community organizations and even more grateful for the compassion and caring nature of community organizations and the thousands of volunteers who make a positive difference.

Abuse Hurts Champion of the Month

Anne-Marie Million of A Million Mouthfuls Catering is our Champion of the Month! "Family, food and giving back with gratitude are baked into the heart and soul of Anne-Marie Million." excerpt from Community Angels article in Newmarket Today - December 27, 2023

Says Anne-Marie, “Giving back is deep rooted for me , from my parents who were always involved in the community , giving back.

My philosophy is to always try to help people if you can, because what goes around, comes around, but it's part of feeling good, and part of what we should do if we are lucky enough to be able to.

I am particularly passionate about charities supporting women and families. When I first met Ellen several years ago I was so moved by her foundation and all that they do and try and partner with them whenever there is opportunity.”

In her newly opened 1,000-square-foot kitchen studio at 200 Mulock Drive, she will soon launch prepared meals, favourite items that her clients have at events for pick up and she plans to hold cooking events, both for and in support of non-profit organizations.

We can’t tell you how many times Anne-Marie has been there for us, offering her services no matter how big or small the event. Many of her options are charity-friendly: another reflection on how big her heart is.
