TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE: DISCOVER THE POWER OF OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES

Life can be stressful. Whether you’re working, retired, or somewhere in between, everyone faces challenges such as deadlines, financial issues, and difficult relationships. These stressors can take a toll on our well-being, making it essential to find ways to reduce stress and enhance our quality of life. One often-overlooked solution is the power of outdoor living spaces. At Artscapes, we understand the impact that thoughtfully designed outdoor areas can have on your life. Our mission is to create spaces that not only beautify your property but also contribute to your mental and physical well-being. Research supports the idea that being outdoors has significant health benefits, and we’re here to help you harness those benefits right at home.

The

Benefits of Being Outdoors

Numerous studies highlight the positive effects of spending time outdoors. Research shows that people who spend time outside are generally happier, less stressed, and more content. For example, a study published in the International Journal of Environmental Health Research found that spending just 20 minutes a day in an outdoor space improves overall well-being, even without physical activity.

Beyond mental health, being close to nature also offers physical health benefits, such as reducing the risk of Type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and even premature death. In short, being outside is good for you, both mentally and physically.

Escaping Indoors

The benefits of outdoor living extend beyond simply being in nature. Our modern lives are predominantly spent indoors, where we are exposed to artificial environments that may harbor allergens like dust and mildew. These factors can lead to health issues such as low energy or mild headaches. Being outside offers a respite from indoor allergens and the monotonous routine of indoor living.

Outdoor environments offer fresh air, sunlight, and the opportunity to experience nature in its purest form. The sensation of a breeze on your skin or the warmth of the sun can rejuvenate the spirit and provide a much-needed break from the confines of climate-controlled spaces.

Creating Your Outdoor Living Space

While parks and forests are wonderful, having a personal outdoor space at home can offer you the benefits of nature daily. At Artscapes, we specialize in designing

outdoor living rooms that inspire you to spend more time outside. Whether it’s for yoga, meditation, dining with friends, or simply enjoying a cup of coffee, these spaces encourage you to relax and connect with nature. Our designs aim to harmonize with the natural landscape, creating spaces that are both functional and beautiful. We believe that connecting with nature is the “antidote to tech overload,” offering a retreat from the constant buzz of technology and a chance to unwind and recharge.

Enhancing Your Property

If you’re inspired to create your own outdoor living area, here are some ideas to consider:

• Add a Fire Pit or Fireplace: Create a cozy gathering spot for family and friends to enjoy year-round.

• Build a Patio: Enjoy dining, lounging, or soaking in a hot tub on a well-designed patio. Incorporate seasonal container gardens for added beauty.

• Incorporate Native Plants: Enhance your space with native flowers and shrubs that attract butterflies and birds, adding to the enjoyment of your outdoor time.

• Ensure a Well-Maintained Property: Maintain an open space for yoga, meditation, or other activities.

• Create Walkways and Steps: Make your property easily navigable with pathways that encourage exploration.

Choosing the Right Landscape Design Company

Designing and building an outdoor living space is an exciting endeavor, but it’s crucial to choose the right company for the job. At Artscapes, we recognize that every property and homeowner is unique, and we’re committed to creating custom spaces that meet your specific needs.

We’ll work closely with you to understand how you envision using your space, whether it’s for hobbies, relaxation, or family gatherings. Our goal is to enhance the natural beauty of your property while providing you with a space that brings joy and relaxation to your life. Let’s Get Started

Are you ready to transform your Virginia home with a stunning outdoor living area? At Artscapes, we’re eager to help you create a space that enhances your life and allows you to enjoy the outdoors to the fullest. Contact us today to discuss your project and begin planning the outdoor living space of your dreams. We can’t wait to see how your new space will enrich your life.

A Life of Service, Family, and Resilience Jason Haag: © Best Version Media

Jason Haag’s life is a testament to unwavering resilience, a solid commitment to his country and family, and a deep sense of service. As a Marine Corps veteran and founder of Leashes of Valor (LOV), a nonprofit organization that provides service dogs to wounded and disabled veterans, Jason’s journey is one of unyielding strength and dedication. But behind his professional accomplishments is a man deeply connected to his family— with members including both humans and canines.

Jason is the father of three children: Tristan, who recently graduated from VCU; Colby, a student-athlete at the University of Mary Washington; and Peyton, a rising high school sophomore in Spotsylvania County. While his children don’t live with him, they are central to his life.

“My kids mean the world to me,” Jason said. “Watching them grow and succeed is one of my greatest joys.”

Jason’s service dog, Maverick, is not just a companion but a vital part of his daily life. The almost two-year-old Maverick was one of six puppies rescued shortly after LOV moved to Fredericksburg.

“Maverick is more than just a service dog; he’s my companion and support,” Jason explained. His bond with Maverick exemplifies the impact of companionship and support in overcoming life’s challenges.

Jason also acknowledges the importance of Elizabeth Haag, his children’s mother.

“We met as teenagers, and I wouldn’t be here today without her,” he said. Their shared history and commitment to their children remain essential to him.

Jason’s Marine Corps career spanned 13 years, including three deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. The physical and emotional toll left him with both visible and invisible wounds.

“I sustained several injuries from machine gun fire and bomb blasts,” he recalled. “But it was the injuries no one could see -- traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder -- that were, in many ways, far worse.” These experiences have undoubtedly shaped his family life and the challenges they have faced together.

After his medical retirement from the Marines in 2013, Jason tried many things to ease his PTSD symptoms.

“But it wasn’t until I received my service dog, Axel, that I finally found healing.”

“Axel and I spent many years traveling the country to share our story and how service dogs can prove life-changing to veterans like me,” Jason continued. This experience led him to establish Leashes of Valor in 2017, a project that has since become his life’s work, “so we could get more highly-trained service dogs into the hands of veterans.”

Beloved Axel passed away in January 2023, but his legacy lives on through Leashes of Valor and Axel’s Place, the organization’s canine and warrior training facility, and within the Haag family’s memories.

“Leashes of Valor is quite literally my life,” Jason said. “I live here on the property on Old Plank Road, which also serves as our office space and hosts veterans from around the country.”

Leashes of Valor is a deeply personal project for Jason, reflecting his desire to help other veterans find the support and healing he experienced. Since 2017, the national nonprofit has helped raise, train, and provide service dogs– at absolutely no cost– to over 32 wounded and disabled veterans.

Jason’s role at Leashes of Valor is not just a volunteer role but a crucial one. He leads by example as the founder, showing that healing and service are intertwined.

“Neither my director of programs, a fellow wounded combat veteran, nor I take a paycheck,” he noted, highlighting the selfless nature of their work and the depth of our commitment to their cause.

Despite the demands of his work, Jason makes time for his children and values the moments they share. Whether attending Colby’s sports events, celebrating Tristan’s graduation, or supporting Peyton through high school, Jason is a devoted father who strives to be present in their lives.

In addition to his work and family life, Jason has taken up competitive golfing.

“I’ve been golfing competitively for about three years,” he said. “But Leashes of Valor is also at the heart of this. We organize multiple golf tournaments throughout the year to raise funds.”

Jason’s life in Fredericksburg is also marked by his connection to the local community. He truly appreciates the support LOV has received from local businesses.

“I love Battlefield Country Store,” Jason said. “Not only do they have delicious food and ice cream, they have also been amazing supporters of LOV and they’re a family favorite.” This past November, the local business even created four specialty milkshakes featuring LOV’s service dogs and donated $2 for every shake they sold. “They also helped us get the word out about our organization in a way we never could have done on our own.”

“Mr. Powell at Powell’s Furniture has also been amazing,” Jason said. “He donated furniture to us and has supported us in many other ways. We love going by the store to train with our dogs.”

“The generosity of this community has been overwhelming,” Jason said. “We knew then that moving here was the best thing that ever happened to this organization and to my family.” Jason and his family try to showcase their gratitude for the community through appreciation events put on by LOV.

While running a nonprofit organization doesn’t leave Jason with a ton of free time, when he can take a few days off, he and the family love spending time at nearby Lake Anna.

Jason Haag’s story is one of courage, dedication, and an enduring commitment to his family and his fellow veterans. Through dedication, compassion, and community support, Jason continues to make a profound difference in the lives of veterans and service dogs alike, all while being the best father he can be.

LOISANN’S HOPE HOUSE: A BEACON OF COMPASSION AND CHANGE

Loisann’s Hope House, located in the heart of Fredericksburg, Virginia, stands as a symbol of hope, resilience, and community support for families experiencing homelessness. Founded in 1987 by a group of concerned citizens, the organization has grown from its humble beginnings to become the region’s largest family homeless shelter, helping countless families regain stability and self-sufficiency over the years.

At the heart of Loisann’s Hope House is a deep commitment to transforming lives.

“Hope House has taken a lead role in the community providing vital support to children and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless,” explained board member Keith Lebor. “While our primary focus is on families needing immediate assistance, our Homeless Helpline often serves as the first point of contact for anyone in need.” Through the helpline, Loisann’s Hope House is able to guide most callers to the appropriate resources for their specific situations, ensuring they have access to services in the region.

“For those who fall within our core mission,” Lebor continued, “we offer direct support, including immediate intervention to prevent homelessness and providing temporary crisis housing and life skills training.”

The organization’s mission is to quickly move children and their families from homelessness to housing by providing a comprehensive range of services designed to address the root causes of homelessness. This mission is underpinned by a belief in the dignity of every individual and a dedication to providing a hand-up, not just a handout.

“Our mission is to break the cycle of homelessness, one family at a time,” said Lebor, who has been an active board member for almost three years and has donated to the organization personally for over six years and through his business, Olde Towne Butcher, for over a decade.

“After learning of the amazing work Hope House was doing for the community, I dug in a little further and was amazed at how successful it is,” he explained. “For example, families exiting the program have a 94% success rate in maintaining their own housing after two years.”

“Being charitable is important,” Lebor emphasized, “but knowing your contributions are having such an incredible impact really lets you know it is worthwhile.”

Over the years, Loisann’s Hope House has developed a holistic approach to addressing homelessness, understanding that securing housing is just one part of the equation. The organization offers a variety of supportive services, including case management, financial literacy education, job training, and mental health support. These services are tailored to meet the unique needs of each family, helping them to build the skills and resources they need to maintain stable housing and achieve long-term independence.

The organization maintains its commitment to its guiding principles: everyone deserves hope; relentless commitment to family; tough love without judgment; education for independence; and accountability with care. Community involvement is integral to the success of Loisann’s Hope House. The organization thrives on the generosity and support of local businesses, faith groups, and individual volunteers who contribute their time, resources, and expertise to help families in need. This strong network of community partners enables Loisann’s Hope House to offer a wide range of services and to extend its impact far beyond what would be possible on its own.

“My passion in contributing to Hope House is derived directly from life experiences,” explained Lebor. “I believe everyone has experienced, or knows someone who has experienced, difficulty at some point in their lives. Whether those difficulties are due to bad decision making or uncontrollable circumstances, often just a leg up is all that is needed to get them back on a productive path. Providing that little bit of help offers families the confidence and, eventually, the self-esteem needed to provide for their families.”

In addition to providing direct services to families, Loisann’s Hope House is also an advocate for systemic change. The organization works to raise awareness about the issue of family homelessness and to advocate for policies that promote affordable housing and economic opportunity. Through these efforts, Loisann’s Hope House seeks not only to address the immediate needs of homeless families but also to contribute to long-term solutions that prevent homelessness from occurring in the first place.

The impact of Loisann’s Hope House is evident in the stories of the families it serves. Many families who come to the shelter are able to rebuild their lives, secure stable housing, and move forward with hope and confidence.

Four high school graduates are moving forward with hope and confidence onto college campuses this fall.

“One student is set to attend her dream school, the HBCU Virginia State University, with aspirations to study psychology,” Lebor explained. “Another plans to pursue biomedical engineering at Germanna Community College, aspiring to specialize in prosthetics. A third student aims to enter the field of criminal justice, also at Germanna. Lastly, a young woman will attend Radford University on a full scholarship, pursuing a degree in Education with dreams of becoming a teacher.”

The organization’s success is measured not just in the number of families housed but in the lasting change it creates in the lives of those it serves. Nevertheless, the numbers are still impressive. In fiscal year 2023, Hope House fielded nearly 16,000 helpline calls, secured permanent housing for 121 family units, and assisted nearly 300 children.

Loisann’s Hope House is more than just a shelter; it is a community of care, compassion, and empowerment. Through its dedicated staff, volunteers, and supporters, the organization continues to make a profound difference in the lives of families experiencing homelessness, offering them the support they need to overcome adversity and build brighter futures.

UNLOCKING YOUTHFUL RADIANCE:

THE ROLE OF BOTOX® IN MEDICAL AESTHETICS

In the ever-evolving world of medical aesthetics, neuromodulators, aka Botox®, have secured their place as a cornerstone of non-surgical cosmetic treatments. Known for their ability to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, these injectable treatments offer a safe, effective, and minimally invasive option for those seeking to enhance their natural beauty.

Understanding Neuromodulators

Neuromodulators are injectable substances that temporarily relax the contraction of facial muscles to soften the appearance of wrinkles and prevent the formation of new or deeper lines. The most well-known neuromodulators include five distinct brands with a foundation consisting of Botulinum Toxin Type A, commonly known by brand names: Botox®, Dysport®, Jeuveau®, Daxxify® and Xeomin®.

How Neuromodulators Work

These treatments block nerve signals to the muscles where they are injected. This prevents the muscles from contracting, reducing dynamic wrinkles—those formed by repetitive facial expressions such as frowning, squinting, or smiling.

Common Areas Treated with Neuromodulators

1. Forehead Lines: Horizontal lines that form across the forehead due to repetitive eyebrows raising.

2. Frown Lines, aka Glabellar Lines: Vertical lines between the eyebrows that appear when frowning.

3. Crow’s Feet: Fine lines that radiate from the outer corners of the eyes, commonly known as “laugh lines.”

4. Bunny Lines: Wrinkles on the bridge of the nose, typically seen when scrunching the nose.

5. Lip or Barcode Lines: Vertical lines around the mouth, often called “smoker’s lines.”

6. Neck Bands: Vertical bands that appear on the neck due to muscle contraction.

Benefits of Neuromodulators

As a non-surgical and minimally invasive treatment, neuromodulator injections are quick and do not require anesthesia or extended downtime. This makes the treatment an excellent option for those seeking non-surgical facial rejuvenation. When administered by a skilled practitioner, neuromodulators provide subtle and natural-looking results, enhancing the patient’s appearance, without making them look “frozen.”

At Bloom, we understand the importance of maintaining expression while achieving a more youthful and rested appearance. Regular use of neuromodulators can prevent the formation of new wrinkles and soften existing wrinkles by limiting the repetitive muscle movements that cause them.

Beyond wrinkle reduction, neuromodulators have numerous applications. In the hands of trained healthcare providers, they can be used to treat a variety of other concerns, including excessive sweating of the underarms, palms, and soles of the feet, as well as neurological indications for treating chronic migraines and muscle spasms.

The Procedure

A neuromodulator treatment session is straightforward and typically takes 15 to 30 minutes. The steps include a detailed consultation with a qualified practitioner to assess your unique facial anatomy, skin condition, and aesthetic goals.

Next, the treatment area is cleansed, and mapping of planned injection sites will occur. Using a fine needle, the neuromodulator is injected into specific muscles to achieve the desired response. The number of injections and the dosage will be individualized as each person’s dose is dependent on the treatment area/s and the anatomical response of the muscle pull.

At Bloom Medical Aesthetics, we always counsel our patients that conservative dosing is valued as additional units can be added at a two to three-week follow-up visit. The best and worst thing about neuromodulator injections is that the effects last 3-5 months. This can be considered the best because the results are temporary, and if you do not like a given treatment, it will dissipate with time. However, additional treatments are required to sustain and maintain the refreshed look if you love the effects.

Results and Longevity

Post-treatment care is minimal, with no downtime. You are advised to avoid excessive rubbing of the treated areas, engaging in strenuous exercise, hot tubs, or saunas for twenty-four hours, and no facials or laying face down for one week. You typically will begin to see results within 5 to 7 days, with full effects visible at the two-week mark. Results can last between 3 and 5 months, depending on factors such as metabolism, dosage, and the areas treated.

Give It a Try!

Neuromodulators have revolutionized the field of medical aesthetics by offering a non-surgical, effective, and quick solution for wrinkle reduction and facial rejuvenation. Understanding the benefits and proper administration of these treatments allows you to achieve a youthful and refreshed appearance without looking overdone, fake, or plastic. Suppose you have ever thought about or considered experiencing Botox® injections for yourself. In that case, I invite you to schedule an appointment at my beautiful boutique practice, Bloom Medical Aesthetics, in downtown Fredericksburg.

A CORE VALUES BLUEPRINT

FOR HOME IMPROVEMENT

Karie, a native of Pennsylvania, cherishes her roots in faith and family above all else. Together with her husband and their nine children, they have fearlessly embraced life’s adventures, including living in Africa and establishing a successful business. Beyond her roles as a dedicated wife and mother, Karie is a passionate educator, talented musician, and enthusiastic traveler. Her love for exploring new cultures and experiencing the world is matched only by her appreciation for a good cup of coffee.

Home improvement begins in the mind. It is the culmination of hopes and dreams. Home improvement anticipates change that will bring happiness, value, and identity. What is the blueprint for choosing the companies to dream with you and make those dreams come true? Like a floor plan on a blueprint, a company’s core values help lay out key components. Core values identify which attributes a family, institution, or business possesses. Choosing companies for your home improvement investment that align with your core values is essential. You will see these ideals carried out in the craft, communication, and customer service you receive during your project. At NK Floors, we hold these core values to the highest standard. Let me explain why we believe they are crucial to our customers and homeowners by listing our core values as a flooring company and applying them to home improvement.

1. Quality

NK Floors is committed to offering quality in the flooring products and services we provide. Our company partners with leading flooring manufacturers to offer our customers top-quality products. For a home improvement, quality matters if you are looking for window replacement, fresh interior paint with accent walls, a kitchen renovation, or an upgrade to your lighting. What is the quality of the products you are purchasing and having installed? If you are hiring a company to do the home improvement, are they certified and trained in their expertise? Trades must take ownership of their knowledge and craftsmanship. Our company offers installer certifications and classes. What about the companies you will hire? Are they top-quality? Home improvements can add value to your home, so choose carefully.

2. Integrity

NK Floors team members are expected to be honest and dependable. Our team strives to have a reputation where our actions match our words. Our goal is to do it right the first time. When considering different companies for home improvement, check their reputability and reviews. Get referrals. No company is perfect, but the consensus should be that they are honest and dependable, and most people are satisfied with their prices, products, and results.

3. Superior Work Ethic

NK Floors team members are expected to put their best effort into every aspect of their work. Superior skills, effective procedures, and continuous improvement are foundational to our company. There is a process for each project in your home. Adequate procedures in construction and renovation ensure a lasting home improvement. The plan for the home upgrade should accompany momentum from start

to finish. Following through on the job allows the project to be completed promptly, tidily, and organized.

4. Effective Communication

NK Floors strives to be direct and timely in communicating with customers and is mindful of concerns. Our goal is to understand and carry out the needs of our clients. You will conduct several vital conversations before any contractor or interior designer enters your home. Are they listening to your ideas while imparting their knowledge, or are they just pushing to make a sale? Are they listening to concerns about products and installation? Customer satisfaction and communication must be prioritized before, during, and after the home renovation.

5. Respect

NK Floor team members strive to interact with positive attitudes and respectful demeanors. Any home improvement project can be stressful. When communicating with the business entrusted to beautify your castle, they must remain respectful and act on the customer’s behalf. Be sure to communicate suitable times to be in the home and how to maneuver around pets and other family members during the project.

6. Flexibility

NK Floors is prepared to adapt and make changes when necessary. We are ready to innovate and excel to increase our efficiency and productivity. Life happens, and our team is prepared to accommodate you when it does. Variables in home improvement include schedules, weather, finances, permits, product availability, colors, design choices, etc.… When obstacles arise, qualified companies will think critically to find a solution. Be sure your team of experienced home improvement companies can tailor to all that may come your way during your renovation.

NK Floors adheres to these core values to offer our customers next-level, precision flooring. Floors for every walk of life can only be laid when we follow these ideals in quality, integrity, superior work ethic, effective communication, respect, and flexibility. Clarify your core values for your next home renovation and use them as a blueprint to find the products and companies you seek to help you create your dream home.

4. STARTER TEA: Pre-made kombucha to kickstart fermentation.

5. A BIG GLASS JAR: Our fermentation station.

6. A CLOTH AND RUBBER BAND: Cover the jar and let it breathe.

7. BOTTLES WITH TIGHT-SEALING LIDS: For the second fermentation and fizz.

Step 2: Brew the Tea

Boil 4 cups of water, then add 4-5 bags of black or green tea. Steep for 5-10 minutes, then remove the tea bags. Stir in 1 cup of sugar until it dissolves. Now, let it cool to room temperature — nobody wants to scald their SCOBY!

Step 3: The SCOBY Show

Pour your cooled tea into the glass jar, then add 4 cups of water. Gently place your SCOBY into the tea. It might float, sink, or do a little dance — all perfectly normal! Add 1 cup of starter tea, cover the jar with the cloth, and secure it with the rubber band. Now, let it sit in a warm, dark spot for 7-14 days. This is where the magic happens!

Step 4: Taste Test Time

After about a week, start tasting your kombucha daily. When it’s just the right balance of sweet and tangy, it’s time to bottle up! Remove the SCOBY and 1 cup of kombucha to use as your starter tea for the next batch.

Step 5: Get Fizzy with It

Pour your kombucha into bottles, leaving a bit of room at the top. Add fruit, herbs, or spices to flavor your brew — the sky’s the limit! Seal the bottles tightly and let them sit at room temperature for 2-7 days. This second fermentation is where the fizzy magic happens.

Step 6: Chill and Enjoy

Pop your bottles into the fridge to chill. Once they’re cold, carefully open them — they’re ready to drink! Pour a glass and savor the refreshing, fizzy goodness of your homemade kombucha.

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR KOMBUCHA BLISS

• Experiment with different fruits and spices — ginger, berries, and citrus are great starters.

• Patience, Young Grasshopper: Fermentation times can vary. Trust your taste buds!

• SCOBY Hotel: Keep extra SCOBYs in a jar with some kombucha for future brews.

Brewing kombucha is like a science experiment you can drink! It’s fun, rewarding, and the perfect way to enjoy a healthy, homemade beverage. So, what are you waiting for? Get brewing, and let the kombucha party begin! Cheers to your fizzy, flavorful adventure!

HISTORY RIGHT AT THE TIPS OF OUR FINGERS

Living in the Fredericksburg area, it is likely that you have heard of or even visited Chatham Manor. Whether you know it as the place popular for its scenic walkthrough or have visited to take high school prom photos, there is more to why Chatham Manor plays such an important role in our nation’s history.

The sizable Georgian structure, later to be coined Chatham Manor, was built in 1771 through the grueling work of craftsmen and enslaved laborers. It was built under the direction of William Fitzhugh and purposely placed atop Stafford Heights, overlooking Fredericksburg, to flaunt his riches. Fitzhugh’s finances later took a dip as all of his hosting to show off his riches led his pocket to run dry. As a result, Fitzhugh sold Chatham Manor after only a brief 35 years of residence there.

During the years leading up to the Civil War, Betty and J. Horace Lacy owned Chatham, residing there only through the winters. At the beginning of the war, Mr. Lacy enlisted as a volunteer for the Confederate army, so Mrs. Lacy left Chatham empty. This was a move that, further down the road, highly benefited the US Army during the Battle of Fredericksburg. Chatham became a headquarters for the battle and a hospital for troops succeeding. As countless sick and injured soldiers sought the makeshift hospital for help, famous historical figures such as Clara Barton and Walt Whitman held fundamental roles within the hospital.

After the war, the property quickly cycled through nine different owners, who ran into financial difficulty when keeping up the grounds and had to sell. Finally, in 1920, Chatham took a sharp turn towards how we know it today. Helen and Daniel Devore purchased the property and decided to work to utilize it in historical regard, transforming the property from a former slave plantation to a rural retreat.

In 1975, Chatham Manor was officially given to the National Parks Service. In 1984, the National Park Service began the restoration process for the 1920s version of the grounds, beginning with the east garden. Many original pieces are still visible, and all of the reconstructed aspects were built to fit in with the style of the 1920s era. One significant remnant left from the original manor can be seen on the riverside at the front entrance. There, you can see the outlines of the 2-story Greek Revival porch that stood for almost 100 years before the addition of the current limestone entrance in the 1920s.

Chatham has stood on the bank of the Rappahannock River, overlooking the city of Fredericksburg, for 250 years. During this time, it was visited by many notable historical figures, including George Washington, Robert E. Lee, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln.

One thing is certain: the grounds are full of history and legacy and are beautiful to visit and learn more about.

SUMMER IN RETROSPECT

AT RIVERBEND HIGH SCHOOL

Julia Pesnell is a rising senior at Riverbend High School. She is a student of the Commonwealth Governor’s School and serves as the Riverbend Junior Class President. Julia also runs cross country and track for the Riverbend High School team. She holds the position of committee executive for the Spanish Honor Society and is a class representative for their chapter of HOSA. Beyond her leadership roles, Julia is actively involved in community service and is a member of the National English Honor Society.

Summer is a highly anticipated season for most students, as it is a time for fun and relaxation. Many RHS students are rather active throughout the summer, involved in athletics, academic activities, community service, and many other unique activities. These students use the summer to extend their passions, talents, and knowledge and to work unwaveringly toward their future.

Senior Sofia Alfaro didn’t slow down much this summer, as she was involved in FBLA — Future Business Leaders of America — nationals, held in Orlando, Florida. The select group of qualifying students from RHS flew out for a five-day trip full of conferences, ceremonies, and competitions. Alfaro competed in the business category of “Ad Advertising.” The group also took a trip to SeaWorld and Universal Studios. Alfaro says, “I got to ride a lot of rides there… and then I got an enormous, and I mean, enormous, hotdog.”

As far as hobby activities, Alfaro says, “I went tubing, and thrift shopping, and to the movies.” She continues, “My favorite thing I’ve done is probably going to see the musical Beetlejuice.” Alfaro holds a huge interest in musicals, and she explains that she has been listening to the music from Beetlejuice for a few years now, which made the performance even better. Alfaro says, “The choreography was pretty great, especially when all of the Beetlejuice clones came in.” She continues, “It was pretty nice to see Beetlejuice and… I went with

a friend, which is always great to have someone else who also has an appreciation for the musical.”

On another note, sophomore Ethan Hacking focussed much of his summer dedication on his sport: running. Hacking says, “I have spent a lot of the summer at running camps in North Carolina and Utah.” Hacking is an integral part of the boys varsity track and cross country teams of RHS, and he trains hard to maintain his status as one of the team’s top runners. Hacking continues, “My favorite thing this summer I’ve done is being able to run and learn with people who are at an elite running level.” Hacking was also able to spend a week in Canada with his family, and he says, “My favorite part was ziplining and white river rafting with my family.”

With all of summer’s fun, it can often be sad as the season begins to wind down and students have to prepare for school. In these first months of school, it is important to start strong and keep in mind any aspects of the new school year that you look forward to.

Alfaro is specifically looking forward to her anatomy and physiology class. Alfaro explains, “I’d like to explore more because I want to go to medical school, so I feel like it will be important for that.”

Hacking says, “I’m most looking forward to being able to spend a lot of time with my friends in school.”

AMERICAN LEGION BOYS STATE POST 320

American Legion Boys State is a week-long program for rising senior boys that serves as an optimal source for leadership growth through immersion in aspects of local government. Steve Robertson, chair of the Virginia and Post 320 Boys State Committees, says, “...the program is an activity of high educational value, born out of the need for youth development and practical citizenship.”

To be selected for the program, school staff nominate students who must go before the Legion Post for an interview by legionnaires. Each accepted student then partakes in an interactive government course designed to impress on the student’s knowledge about how local government operates and how big of an impact citizens have on this operation.

The students attend Radford University for a week during the summer before senior year. There, they simulate government operations, being placed in “cities” that each serve as an individual local government. The students then elect local officials within their city and, later, state officials such as the Attorney General.

Member of Post 320, Austin Clayton, was elected Attorney General. He says, “One of the most meaningful things I did as Attorney General and secretary of the Commonwealth— a position on the governor’s cabinet— was drafting real law that would be voted on by the boys to pass to the General Assembly of Virginia to be considered by real lawmakers.” Clayton describes that running for the office of Attorney General was not as difficult as he anticipated, as he says, “I believe I can attribute my success in the election to not being a politician, but just somebody who wanted to run for a position and do it well.”

Beyond this, the students must participate in flag ceremonies, city elections and discussions, sporting events, and campaigning. Member of Post 320, Kirby Domachowski, says, “The main thing I learned from this experience was the ability to be

social… being at Boys State for a week, not knowing anyone there, and practically being forced to socialize has helped me learn social skills… I can also go through social situations that might have scared me in the past without breaking a sweat.”

The skills these students develop during the week at Boys State will have an extreme impact on their future, whether in a career or everyday life. Domachowski says, “For my future, I hope to be an officer in the United States Air Force. Learning these skills of being able to talk to new people will be extremely valuable….” Post 320 member Jack Buckley says, “I feel that the knowledge from Boys State will benefit me by giving me more insight into what happens when I vote for someone on the local or federal level.”

Clayton expresses that he does not intend to enter into a government-related career. However, he still recognizes the extreme importance of the program, as he says, “...understanding how our government functions on a deeper level than is discussed in the media is important for enhanced civic engagement…”

Robertson says, “Watching these boys mature politically over the course of a week is exciting. Their performances would make Washington, Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe proud.”

This year’s participants representing Post 320 were Jack Buckley and Kirby Domachowski from Riverbend High School; Jeffery Chen from Courtland High School; Nick Page and Matt Marulli from Chancellor High School; Peter Jett from Fredericksburg Christian School; Leo Herrin, Chance Gillespie, and Austin Clayton from Massaponax High School.

Robertson concludes, saying, “It is truly a week that can change a lifetime.”

A FOCUS ON MENTORING OUR YOUTH

Parents and Teachers, what an incredible role we have! As we emerge into the 2024-2025 school year, may we focus on one of life’s most important callings: mentoring the youth in our paths. Our mission field is the youth in our community, on our school campuses, and around our dinner tables. There is no greater way to impact our future. Here are some tangible ways to mentor: Share knowledge and experiences.

Everyone is a teacher. We all have truths from life, trade, education, and trials to impart. However, mentoring is more than just sharing what we know; it is about inspiring change. It uses what we have and allows others to use it as a springboard to go further.

Model what is expected of others.

A good mentor will always display the character, patterns, and behavior of what is expected in those they lead. A mentor is not perfect, but even in failures, good mentors display how to recover, correct, and try again. Good mentors are servant leaders. They display the ability to both follow and lead. Youth flourish when they serve or participate alongside someone they admire, whether a coach, teacher, parent, or older sibling. The mentor’s goal is always to be a better example to those who follow.

Verbalize that you care and show it.

One of the most valuable gifts we can give another is encouragement. Former President Theodore Roosevelt stated, “No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.” Love and genuine care are the optimal climate for growth. Praise improvements, not perfection. Express your desire for growth and what is best for your mentees. Speaking truth into the lives of youth and mentioning strengths will lift any weary soul. Our young people are in dire need of this today.

Give your time.

Nothing says that you care more than T.I.M.E. Time is one of life’s most valuable and limited resources. It demands prioritization and careful thought of its investment. Our youth probably need our time more than anything else. They need time for us to listen, not just to their words but to their hearts. Giving this precious gift shows love and respect.

Launch into this school year as a mentor, giving our youth hope and significance. Share your knowledge, good example, time, and encouragement. Our future depends on it!

Silent Suffering: Spotting Hidden Pain in Cats and Dogs

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month, a timely reminder to learn how to recognize pain in our pets. Dogs and cats can’t tell us when they’re in pain, and their natural instinct to hide discomfort makes it even harder to detect. As pet parents, it’s up to us to notice the subtle clues they give us so we can get them help quickly.

Understanding Pain in Pets

Pain can arise from surgeries, dental disease, ear and skin infections, trauma, osteoarthritis, and even emotional stress. It generally comes in two forms: acute and chronic. Acute pain is sudden and often easier to spot, while chronic pain develops over time and is frequently mistaken for aging or “slowing down.” Therefore, it’s crucial to watch for subtle signs that may indicate your pet is in pain.

Behavioral Changes

One of the first indicators of pain is a change in behavior. Has your playful dog become less active, or is your usually social cat hiding more? These shifts could signal that something isn’t right. Painful dogs and cats may withdraw, lose interest in play, or show signs of anxiety or aggression.

Routine Disruptions

Pain can also alter your pet’s daily habits. A dog that eagerly eats might avoid going downstairs to the food bowl, or a cat might start avoiding the litter box. Sleep patterns can change, too—your pet might sleep more than usual or struggle to get comfortable at night.

Physical Signs

Physical symptoms are another clue. Is your dog limping or struggling to rise after resting? Has your cat stopped jumping onto their favorite perch? Stiffness, difficulty posturing to use the bathroom, or a hunched back can all point to pain. Even facial expressions can change in cats—flattened ears, squinted eyes, or odd whisker positioning might indicate discomfort. The Feline Grimace Scale app can help you spot these signs.

Could It Be Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common cause of chronic pain in pets, affecting even younger animals. This progressive joint disease causes inflammation and pain, making movement difficult. Early detection is key to managing OA, and tools like Zoetis Petcare’s OA Checklist for dogs and The Feline Musculoskeletal Pain Index for cats can help you recognize signs of this condition.

What Can You Do?

If you think your pet might be in pain, don’t wait—reach out to your vet! A thorough exam and imaging can pinpoint the cause. Early recognition allows you and your vet to create a treatment plan, whether through medication, acupuncture, physical therapy, or dietary changes. Addressing pain early can prevent it from becoming a chronic, debilitating issue.

Your pet is counting on you to notice the signs of pain and get them the help they need!
