THINK YOU DON’T NEED TO MOW? HERE’S WHY YOUR LAWN DISAGREES

BY AARON JOHNSON

At Uncle Onion’s Lawn Care, we’ve heard every excuse in the book: “I’m letting it grow naturally,” “I’m too busy this week,” or “It doesn’t look that bad yet.” While we appreciate the desire to give your lawn a break, skipping regular mowing sessions is actually doing more harm than good to your green space.
Your Grass Has Growth Patterns for a Reason Grass doesn’t just grow randomly – it follows specific patterns designed to keep your lawn healthy and resilient. When you maintain regular mowing schedules, you’re encouraging lateral growth that creates the thick, lush carpet effect everyone wants. Skip too many sessions, and your grass starts growing vertically instead, creating sparse, weak areas that are vulnerable to weeds, pests, and disease.
The One-Third Rule Isn’t Just a Suggestion
Professional lawn care specialists follow the one-third rule religiously: never cut more than one-third of the grass blade length at once. When you let your lawn grow too long between cuts, you’re forced to remove more than this recommended amount, which shocks the grass and weakens its root system. This stress makes your lawn more susceptible to drought, temperature fluctuations, and pest infestations.
Overgrown Lawns Become Weed Magnets
Tall, unmanaged grass creates the perfect environment for weeds to establish themselves. Dandelions, crabgrass, and other unwanted plants thrive in the shade created by overgrown turf. Once weeds take hold, they compete with your grass for nutrients, water, and sunlight, eventually taking over entire sections of your yard.
Pest Problems Multiply in Long Grass
Extended grass provides ideal hiding spots for ticks, fleas, and other pests that can affect both your family and pets. Regular mowing elimi-

nates these habitats and reduces the likelihood of pest-related problems around your home.
The Bottom Line
Consistent mowing isn’t just about aesthetics – it’s about lawn health. Regular cutting promotes stronger root development, prevents thatch buildup, and maintains the density needed to naturally crowd out weeds. At Uncle Onion’s Lawn Care, we’ve seen firsthand how proper mowing schedules transform struggling lawns into neighborhood showpieces.
Your lawn is constantly communicating its needs through its growth patterns. When you maintain regular mowing schedules, you’re not just keeping up appearances – you’re investing in a healthier, more resilient outdoor space that will serve your family for years to come.

These photos show dead grass because it was covered with grass clippings. The grass clippings were the result from mowing grass that was too tall and that should have been mowed a week earlier.

Pinups with Purpose
How Downtown Dolls is Making Fredericksburg a Better Place to Live
BY MALLORY HARDGROVE
PHOTOS BY KAREN PRESECAN PHOTOGRAPHY & COURTESY OF DOWNTOWN DOLLS

In the summer of 2019, Kitty Melerski had a vision that would transform both her own life and the fabric of the Fredericksburg community. What began as a simple desire to give back locally has blossomed into something extraordinary: a sisterhood of women who prove that vintage glamour and modern philanthropy make a powerful combination.
The Downtown Dolls, described as “Pinups with Purpose,” represent far more than their eye-catching vintage aesthetic might suggest. This modern pinup social club has become a driving force for positive change in Fredericksburg, channeling the confidence and fierce femininity of the pinup era into meaningful community service that touches lives throughout the region.
From Corporate Giving to Community Building
Melerski’s journey to founding the Downtown Dolls began with her previous role as president of her company’s employee-funded nonprofit. While that experience was valuable, working over an hour away from home made her realize something important about where her heart truly lies.
“I had previously served as the President of my company’s employee-funded nonprofit, but working over an hour away from home made me realize how much I wanted to make an impact locally,” Melerski explains. This realization sparked a desire to create something that would directly benefit the community where she lived and raised her family.
Her philosophy was simple but powerful: “I’ve always believed that ‘If you can and have, you should do and give.’” This belief, combined with her love for the pinup communi -
We believe in the power of community, compassion, and confidence,” Melerski explains. “At our core, we are women lifting up women—through service, sisterhood, and self-expression. We embrace the glamour of the pinup era not just for its fashion but for its fierce femininity and timeless confidence. But we don’t stop at the surface. We’re here to serve.

ty and admiration for other groups that blended vintage style with meaningful philanthropy, led her to bring that same spirit to Fredericksburg.
The response was immediate and enthusiastic. “At our first meeting, six women showed up— each of them excited to do more than just dress up. They wanted to make a difference. And from that small gathering, we’ve grown into a sisterhood of over 25 pinups with purpose,” Melerski recalls with pride.
A Philosophy Rooted in Empowerment
The Downtown Dolls operate under a philosophy that seamlessly weaves together style, service, and sisterhood. Their approach challenges the notion that community service must be somber or utilitarian, instead proving that joy and purpose can coexist beautifully.
“We believe in the power of community, compassion, and confidence,” Melerski explains. “At our core, we are women lifting up women—through service, sisterhood, and self-expression. We embrace the glamour of the pinup era not just for its fashion but for its fierce femininity and timeless confidence. But we don’t stop at the surface. We’re here to serve.”
This philosophy extends beyond mere charitable giving to encompass a holistic approach to community engagement. The organization recognizes that supporting Fredericksburg means consistently showing up, whether through organized fundraising events, volunteer work, or simply being present when the community needs them most.
“Whether it’s supporting local charities, organizing drives, or showing up where we’re needed most, the Dolls live by the philosophy that if you have the heart and the means, you give back,” Melerski notes. “Every lash, red lip, and swing dress is backed by purpose—and our purpose is to leave Fredericksburg a little brighter than we found it.”
Measurable Impact Across Multiple Organizations
The Downtown Dolls’ impact on Fredericksburg extends far beyond what their relatively small membership might suggest. Rather than operating in isolation, they function as a multiplier for community good, raising funds that they then distribute to other local organizations while also providing hands-on volunteer support.
“The Downtown Dolls multiply every dollar donated to us and pass those funds on to other amazing local organizations. So far, we’ve raised over $47,000 for groups like the Fairy Godmother Project, Gwyneth’s Gift Foundation, Ellie’s Elves, The Lisa Pitts Eley Foundation, Empower House, and many more,” Melerski reports.
This impressive fundraising total represents just one dimension of their community impact. The organization also emphasizes direct service, with members rolling up their sleeves to support various causes throughout the year. “Our Dolls have delivered meals to homebound residents, packed supply boxes for the Blue Star Moms, and supported events at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore,” Melerski explains, highlighting the diversity of their volunteer efforts.
The scope of their involvement reflects a commitment to being responsive to community needs rather than limiting themselves to a single cause. “Over the years, we’ve jumped in wherever help is needed—whether it’s participating in charity walks, assisting with community events, or lending a hand at local drives,” she adds.
Inspiration Rooted in Legacy
For Melerski, the work of the Downtown Dolls is deeply personal, driven by her desire to model community engagement for the next generation. Her approach to leadership and service is fundamentally shaped by her role as a mother and her vision of the legacy she wants to leave behind.
“My biggest inspiration in life is my children. Everything I do—especially when it comes to service—is rooted in the hope of leaving behind something they can be proud of,” she explains.
“I want them to see that making a difference doesn’t always require a grand gesture; sometimes it starts with simply showing up, caring deeply, and giving back however you can.”
This perspective infuses the Downtown Dolls with a sense of purpose that extends beyond immediate charitable goals to encompass broader community building and mentorship. Melerski finds particular joy in witnessing transformation within the organization itself, watching new members discover their own capacity for leadership and service.
“What I enjoy most is watching that same spark light up in others. Whether it’s a new member finding her confidence or a local family receiving help when they need it most, I love knowing our work is creating ripples of kindness all around us,” she says.
Creating Connection Through Creative Events
The Downtown Dolls have mastered the art of making community engagement both meaningful and enjoyable, hosting creative events that draw broad participation while raising significant funds for local causes. Their upcoming calendar demonstrates their commitment to keeping community involvement fresh, fun, and accessible to everyone.
Their annual My Fair Lady Pinup Contest at the Fredericksburg Agricultural Fair exemplifies this approach, offering women a welcoming entry point into the pinup lifestyle while supporting the Bill Carroll Foundation. September brings the return of the popular “Beards in the Burg” contest in partnership with Shan Man’s Beard Wisdom, where participants can enter their beards or come vote to “save it or shave it” in what promises to be “a hilarious night” that raises money for the Downtown Dolls’ charitable work.
These events serve multiple purposes simultaneously: they raise funds for worthy causes, bring the community together in celebration, and demonstrate that charitable work doesn’t have to be serious to be impactful.
A Culture of Empowerment and Transformation
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the Downtown Dolls’ impact on Fredericksburg lies not just in their external charitable work but in their ability to transform the lives of their members, creating a ripple effect of empowerment that extends throughout the community.
© Best Version Media
“One of our favorite sayings is, ‘A Doll’s gotta do what a Doll’s gotta do,’” Melerski shares. “It might sound playful—and it is—but it also captures something deeper about who we are. We show up, we support one another, and we serve our community with heart and humor.”
The transformative power of the organization became particularly evident during their recent Christmas party, where members shared personal stories about what the club had meant to them. “We are so thankful for Kitty’s vision and the effort put in by the founding members of our club. They created something special that has made a huge impact. So many of our ladies joined because they were looking for something more—more connection, more purpose, more joy. Through the Downtown Dolls, they didn’t just find a group of fun, loving, and accepting friends—they found strength in themselves they didn’t know was there,” current President, Heather Ablondi explains.
This emphasis on personal empowerment creates a powerful cycle: as individual members grow in confidence and purpose, they become more effective advocates and volunteers for the causes the organization supports, ultimately amplifying their positive impact on Fredericksburg.
Looking Forward: A Vision for Sustained Impact
As the Downtown Dolls continue to grow and evolve, Melerski’s vision extends beyond her leadership to encompass the long-term sustainability of the organization’s mission. Her perspective on leadership reflects a deep understanding that lasting community impact requires building systems and culture that can thrive regardless of any single individual’s involvement.
“The strength of an idea lies in its ability to live on in others. As the founder of the Downtown Dolls, that’s something I’ve seen firsthand—and it’s one of the things I’m most grateful for,” she reflects. “What started as a simple idea

to blend vintage fun with community service has grown into something so much bigger, thanks to the incredible women who’ve caught the vision and stepped up as leaders.”
This approach to organizational development ensures that the Downtown Dolls’ positive impact on Fredericksburg will continue to grow and evolve, adapting to meet changing community needs while maintaining their core commitment to service, sisterhood, and style.
The Downtown Dolls prove that making a community better doesn’t require abandoning joy, creativity, or personal expression. Instead, they demonstrate that when passion meets purpose, the result can be both deeply meaningful and genuinely fun. Through their work, Fredericksburg has gained not just another charitable organization but a vibrant example of how community engagement can be both transformative and sustainable. Their success in making Fredericksburg a better place to live lies not just in the funds they’ve raised or the volunteer hours they’ve contributed but in their ability to inspire others to discover their own capacity for service and community building. That may be their greatest gift to Fredericksburg of all.

A&J POWER WASHING: FAMILY-DRIVEN
EXCELLENCE IN HOME EXTERIOR CARE
BY MALLORY HARDGROVE

Alan and Jennifer Windsor have built A&J Power Washing on a foundation of family values and community service, transforming their passion for outdoor work into a thriving business that serves their neighbors with dedication and care. Operating for approximately a year and a half, this family-owned company has quickly established itself as a trusted provider of soft washing and pressure washing services, all in the spirit of community service and connection.
The inspiration behind A&J Power Washing runs deeper than business success. “Our biggest inspiration is our daughter. She is always telling us we work too much, and it really opened our eyes. We need to be present more,” Alan explains. This realization sparked their entrepreneurial journey, as both Alan and Jennifer currently work full-time jobs for large corporations. Their ultimate goal reflects their commitment to family: “We want to make this our full-time career so we can make more time for family and friends, taking those vacations that can be hard to schedule.”
A&J Power Washing specializes in comprehensive exterior cleaning services that protect and enhance the appearance of homes throughout the community. Their soft washing service removes harmful organisms from home exteriors while improving aesthetic appeal, and their pressure washing tackles patios, decks, and other surfaces to eliminate dangerous and unsightly growth. The company’s philosophy is centered on relieving homeowners of the burden of time-consuming maintenance, aiming to make their lives easier and stress-free.
“Many people believe that having your house washed or your deck cleaned

the ladder out for, which can also prove to be dangerous. We take all those concerns and make them ours for a reasonable price.”
The family’s commitment to service extends beyond mere transactions. “We are professionals, but we are people too, and we treat everyone with the same respect we show to people we have known for years. Everyone is a friend and a long-lasting relationship when you treat them like people who matter,” Alan emphasizes. This approach has helped them build lasting connections within their community.
Alan and Jennifer have been married for eleven years and have been together for eighteen years in total. Their energetic daughter, along with their two rescue dogs, Juniper and Dobby, complete their active household. The family enjoys outdoor activities, including biking, four-wheeling, beach trips, and building sandcastles together.
Looking towards the future, the Windsors harbor hopes that their daughter will embrace the family business. “We are hoping she will embrace this venture as well and take the company over one day,” they share, reflecting their long-term vision for A&J Power Washing.
Their message to the community is clear and heartfelt: “We are fami-

THE ART OF BACKSPLASH DESIGN
BY KARIE OWENS PHOTOS COURTESY OF NK FLOORS

Karie, a native of Pennsylvania, cherishes her roots in faith and family above all else. Together with her husband and their nine children, they have fearlessly embraced life’s adventures, including living in Africa and establishing a successful business. Beyond her roles as a dedicated wife and mother, Karie is a passionate educator, talented musician, and enthusiastic traveler. Her love for exploring new cultures and experiencing the world is matched only by her appreciation for a good cup of coffee.
The kitchen is the heart of the home. It is where we gather, eat, play, share life, and make memories. While functionality is the priority, aesthetics is just as important. A kitchen backsplash shields walls from moisture, grease, and food. Bold and bright backsplash designs are popular. However, the trend for 2025 is matching countertops and cabinets as well as neutral-toned backsplashes with colorful cabinetry. If you are upgrading your kitchen this year, you will need to know about the common materials, design styles, and finishes. Let’s walk through the first three big decisions. Choose your material.
The material you choose for your backsplash will depend on your budget, style, and the need for durability. You can choose from ceramic or porcelain tile, glass, natural stone, engineered stone, stainless steel, wood, concrete, mirrored glass, or a marble slab. The most common and economical
materials include ceramic and porcelain tile. These materials resist water and stains, and require a sealed grout that can vary in color.
Glass tile gives a more modern look and reflects light. It is easy to clean but more costly than ceramic or porcelain. Natural stone backsplashes, including granite, marble, and slate, are exquisite and invite a piece of the earth into your kitchen. They offer luxury, but at a higher price, and sealing is necessary, as this material is more porous and needs more maintenance. Practical and industrial, stainless steel offers a modern look but easily shows fingerprints and dents. Concrete also boasts modern class, but is prone to cracks over time.
Manufactured slabs of engineered stone or quartz offer an alternative to natural stone with durability and low maintenance, no grout lines, and a seamless finish. You can choose wood or shiplap for a warm, rustic look with texture. Sealing the wood surface is key when choosing this material

due to moisture. Finally, if you want to expand the area visually, select a type of mirrored glass.
Select your design style, color, and finish.
What statement do you want to make? Do you want a bold statement to stand out in your kitchen or something more classic and timeless? A classic design would be ceramic subway tile, usually 3” x 6” laid out in a brick fashion. Subway tile has various colors, sheens (glossy to matte), and textures. If you enjoy extreme detail, mosaic tile would catch your eye.
Mosaics are small tiles arranged in patterns with tiles not exceeding two inches and are made of glass, ceramic, porcelain, stone, or metal, often mounted on a mesh or paper backing to make installation easier. If you like a geometric accent, herringbone would be a consideration for a clas sic or contemporary update. Herringbone tile resembles a fishbone de sign with rectangular tiles arranged in a staggered, zigzag pattern.
You could also go with a modern geometric design and incorporate repe tition of shapes and patterns. Keep in mind some visual components for your design. Choosing lighter colors for the backsplash will make the room feel more spacious, whereas darker colors add more of a dramatic nu ance. Glossy tiles are easier to clean, but a matte finish offers an essence of subtle sophistication.
Backsplash installation is an effective way to add beauty and protection to your home. Be sure to use a company that offers a wide range of tile options and professional installation services to ensure your backsplash is a masterpiece.

WHAT IS AN ESTATE PLANNING LAWYER AND WHY DO I NEED ONE?
BY DIANA H. D’ALESSANDRO, ATTORNEY-AT-LAW
We have all seen the advertisements on television - $150 for a Will or, even better, a Trust. I cringe every time I see one of those commercials or a website promoting a ‘cheap’ estate plan. Engaging the services of a lawyer to prepare your estate plan is a wise investment, but first, what is an estate planning lawyer?
There are lawyers, and then there are estate planning lawyers. You will find many law firms that offer estate planning services along with a multitude of other services. These are called ‘general’ firms, and while they may have many talented attorneys, estate planning is a complex and ever-evolving practice area.
An estate planning lawyer, on the other hand, is someone who specializes in this subject and stays up-to-date on changes in the law, knowing how those changes will affect their clients. Estate planning lawyers prepare numerous important documents, including Wills, Trusts, Powers of Attorney related to healthcare and financial matters, Advance Medical Directives, and deeds. They know how to prepare these documents in a manner that provides the greatest protection to their clients.
For most of us, we spend the majority of our lives working hard to acquire and protect our assets. If you own anything, you have an estate. This includes real estate, bank accounts, retirement accounts, stocks, bonds, other investments, life insurance, personal property (e.g., jewelry, cars, artwork, clothing, household furnishings), and even pets. If you value anything you own, it is crucial to properly document how you want those assets distributed at your death.
A properly drafted Will or Trust will also protect your assets from the creditors of your beneficiaries or, in some cases, from the beneficiaries themselves. Younger beneficiaries or beneficiaries with mental or physical impairments oftentimes should not have an inheritance distributed to them outright. An estate planning lawyer will advise you about the best way to protect all of your assets, depending on your individual and familial circumstances. For example, you can hold assets in a trust for the benefit

of a younger beneficiary. The funds can still be used for the beneficiary’s health, education, and general maintenance, but they are not available for the beneficiary to purchase a fancy red sports car.
It is a common misconception that, at your death, if you had a Last Will and Testament, then that Will has to be recorded at the courthouse. Once recorded, a Will becomes public record, meaning anyone can view its contents. Wills only need to be recorded, however, if there is a need for probate. Probate is the court-monitored administration of an estate. Probate is triggered if, at your death, an asset is left in your individual name with no beneficiary.
Estate planning attorneys know how to keep your estate out of probate so that the administration of your estate can be done privately – outside of the court process. If you have ever been named Executor of a Will and had to endure the probate process, then you also most likely understand why there is a great desire to avoid it.
Depending on the value of your estate, there may be tax implications at your death. The tax laws change frequently, and no one can predict the laws in effect at the time of your death. A good estate planning attorney will draft your documents to ensure your estate is afforded the greatest possible protection from any potential tax consequences at your death. So, why do you need an estate planning lawyer? The answer is simple: protection.
Do not fall for the ‘cheap’ online Will or Trust. There is no one-size-fits-all estate plan, and when something sounds too good to be true, it almost certainly is. Invest in an estate planning attorney to protect your hardearned assets and make sure those assets pass easily at your death. Your beneficiaries will thank you.

MILESTONES AND MEMORIES: RIVERBEND HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL RECAP
BY JULIA PESNELL PHOTOS COURTESY OF JAMESON SNELL

Julia Pesnell is a recent graduate of Riverbend High School. She was also a student of the Commonwealth Governor’s School and served as the Riverbend Junior Class President. Julia also ran cross country and track for the Riverbend High School team. She held the position of committee executive for the Spanish Honor Society and was a class representative for their chapter of HOSA. Beyond her leadership roles, Julia was a member of the National English Honor Society and remains actively involved in community service.
The Riverbend High School Softball team had a season that is bound to go down in school history as one of the greatest. The team was the first softball team in Riverbend’s 21-year history to make it to States, marking an incredible accomplishment. However, to make all of this happen, a significant amount of hard work was put in behind the scenes by the coaching staff and athletes to ensure that they maximized this year’s talent-filled team.
One particularly central player, junior Jameson Snell, has been a critical part of the Riverbend softball team since her 8th-grade year, making varsity as a freshman. Snell began playing softball on a parks and recreation team at the age of 8 and immediately fell in love with the sport. From there, she joined Unity to play travel ball and has steadily progressed from that point. Snell had a remarkable season herself, playing versatile positions, including 2nd base, shortstop, and pitcher. Snell adds, “This season, I have also hit my first home run for the Riverbend Softball program.” This season, she was voted captain of the softball team and continually demonstrated a commitment to her sport, leading her team to victory.
The team had a stunning overall record, going 11-0 in district play and claiming the regular-season district title. They entered the district tournament as strong as ever and emerged victorious as district tournament champions. The next step for them was regionals, a significant leap, but they practiced hard and were well-prepared. Winning their first regional game 7-5, the team advanced to the regional championships and secured a spot in the state tournament [both of which will take place beyond our publication deadline].
A large part of the increased success this year can be attributed to the prioritizing of team bonding. Snell says, “Our greatest success this year is being able to quiet the outside noise… and to just play as a team.” She elaborates on this, saying, “We have become closer this year, which has established more trust on and off the field, and we have just had more fun and played more loosely than in the past.”
This aspect has proven to be incredibly important not only for the team’s athletic success but also for creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Snell explains that one method of team bonding they enacted was eating a meal at one athlete’s

house before any game. This has done both, ensuring better gameplay but also allowing the girls to create memories as a team. Snell echoes this sentiment as she comments about the newfound tradition, saying, “A little way to make sure we all get locked in and are ready to play. This has become a great memory for a lot of the team and allows us to have fun with each other before the games.”
In the end, no matter how far the team advances in the state tournament, they have already come extremely far and found methods to do so that can be held as memories closely throughout the rest of their lives.

LAUNCHING CAREERS IN HIGH SCHOOL
BY JULIA PESNELL PHOTO COURTESY OF SCTC

There are many students in our area who, when asked about their plans for the future, have a clear-cut idea of what they do or absolutely do not want to do. A lot of this can be attributed to the courses offered at the Spotsylvania Career and Technical Center, which allow high school students to explore numerous career-oriented classes.
The Spotsylvania CTC building, also known as SCTC, is situated off Smith Station Road, adjacent to Courtland High School. The center busses students in from all five high schools in the county twice a day, cultivating a diverse and unique learning environment. The mission of SCTC is to “Engage, Enroll, Empower, and Employ secondary students and adults by delivering high-quality instruction that emphasizes career and college readiness.”
SCTC currently houses 19 different program areas. Some of these course areas include cosmetology, culinary arts, computer sciences, carpentry, welding, automotive services, and health sciences. Part of the career readiness aspect is that many of these courses prepare students for the workforce by offering certifications and placing them in a position where they can realistically secure a job right out of high school.
The health science courses are especially popular, offering dentistry, veterinary sciences, medical administration, and nursing. This past school year saw a competitive bracket of applicants for the Dual Enrollment Healthcare Tech

class. With a new teacher and fresh experiences, these students each ended the school year having gained numerous skills.
The Dual Enrollment Healthcare Tech class is designed to train students in Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) level skills. It is a recommended course for anyone considering a career in the medical field. It offers a strong foundation and allows students to see the minute and often overlooked details of healthcare, such as bedmaking, bathing, feeding, and dressing patients. By the end of the course, students have all been tested to become Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), allowing them the opportunity to secure a job with that title.
Karen Jacinto Diaz recently finished this class and is a newly certified CNA. She wishes to become a registered nurse working with pediatrics eventually and says, “This class has prepared me to know the basics of nursing, and this class has also provided a starting point into what nursing is all about and what real-life situations you will encounter.”
During the first semester, students are introduced to all necessary topics and skills and practice these skills in the SCTC health skills lab using dummies under the supervision of their teacher. Then, beginning in the second semester, the students partake in clinicals this year at Carriage Hill Assisted Living Facility. This allows students to experience real 6:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. shifts, assisting employed CNAs with real-life patients.
Reflecting on this experience, Karen says, “I genuinely think it’s a crucial component, especially if you are set on continuing to be a nurse.” She continues, saying, “This provides real-life experience on what it’s actually like to work in this particular area, and can also be a good experience that can help you decide if this is the path best for you since nursing is known to be one of the most challenging jobs.”
Overall, the lessons learned in this class will be beneficial for each student, and in addition, there are many more classes offered at SCTC that will have a lasting impact on the future of each student who passes through.

BEAT THE HEAT: KEEP YOUR PET SAFE THIS SUMMER
BY DR. KATRINA SPIES, DVM, CHPV, CCRV, CVA, CVPP

As the temperature climbs, so does the risk of heatstroke for our pets. This life-threatening condition happens when a pet’s body overheats—typically above 105.8°F—and it can no longer cool itself effectively. Left untreated, heatstroke rapidly leads to severe organ damage and, tragically, can be fatal. The good news? It’s almost entirely preventable!
How Pets Cool Themselves—and Why It Can Fail
Unlike humans, dogs don’t sweat through their skin. They pant to cool off by evaporating moisture from their tongue and respiratory tract. But panting isn’t always enough—especially in humid weather or when pets are confined to hot spaces or overexert themselves.
Heatstroke happens when heat gain exceeds the body’s ability to release it. Body temperature rises
quickly, triggering cellular damage, inflammation, and potentially organ failure.
Common Causes of Heatstroke
• Parked cars are the #1 danger - even with windows cracked, temperatures rise to deadly levels within minutes.
• Poor ventilation in garages, sheds, and rooms with no airflow trap heat.
• Lack of shade or water, which pets need at all times.
• Exercise during hot or humid weather can overwhelm a pet’s ability to cool down.
Who’s Most at Risk?
Any pet can suffer from heatstroke, but some are more vulnerable:
• Brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds (Pugs, Bulldogs, Boxers, Shih Tzus, etc.) have

shorter airways that make breathing and cooling more difficult.
• Overweight pets have insulating body fat that traps heat.

• Call your vet immediately and prepare to transport. Continue cooling efforts en route.
Why Veterinary Care Is Critical
Even if your pet seems better, internal damage may continue. A veterinarian can:
• Monitor and regulate temperature
• Provide IV fluids
• Administer oxygen
• Run bloodwork to assess organ function and blood clotting
• Treat complications like kidney failure, brain swelling, or seizures

• Seniors and puppies regulate temperature less efficiently.
• Pets with heart, lung, or neurologic conditions are less able to cope with heat.
• Dark-coated pets absorb more solar radiation.
• Unacclimated pets need 6–8 weeks to adjust to warmer conditions gradually.
Warning Signs of Heatstroke
Early recognition is crucial. Watch for:
• Heavy or frantic panting
• Bright red gums or tongue
• Drooling or sticky saliva
• Weakness, collapse, or lethargy
• Disorientation or wobbly gait
• Vomiting or diarrhea (possibly with blood)
• Rectal temperature over 105°F (though this may decrease in late stages)
• Advanced signs include pale or bluish gums, seizures, bruising, coma, or sudden death.
What to Do if You Suspect Heatstroke
Act fast—this is a true emergency!
• Move to a cooler place with shade and air-conditioning.
• Begin cooling by applying cool water to the belly, neck, armpits, groin, and paws.
• Use a fan to enhance evaporative cooling.
• Avoid wet towels—they trap heat.
• Offer water if your pet is conscious and hasn’t vomited (but don’t force them to drink).
Will My Pet Recover?
Heatstroke is very serious. Mortality rates in dogs can reach 50–56%. Survival depends on how high the temperature climbed, how long the pet was overheated, how quickly cooling and veterinary treatment were started, and whether complications develop.
Prevention Is the Best Medicine
• Never leave your pet in a vehicle.
• Walk during cooler times of day.
• Provide water and shade outdoors.
• Avoid hot pavement—if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paws.
• Let pets adjust gradually to warmer weather.
• Know your pet’s risks and act accordingly.
Final Thought
Heatstroke is a preventable tragedy. With awareness and quick action, you can keep your pet safe, cool, and comfortable all summer long. If you suspect your pet is in distress from the heat, don’t wait, act immediately. Their life depends on it.

SUMMER ON THE RAPPAHANNOCK
BY JULIA PESNELL
One of the many beautiful aspects of our gorgeous area is the Rappahannock River. The wildlife and views it offers are unique, and the numerous fun opportunities that await are plentiful. In the summer months, families constantly picnic on the shore, children splash around in the water, and outdoor adventurers traverse the river. Such an expansive area truly allows for a wide range of activities, all of which can bring great enjoyment to people of all ages.
With its beautiful green and natural landscape, Rappahannock is often a top-tier location for professional photography. With shallow areas alongside the shore and access to several easyto-ascend rocks, the backdrop truly is stunning. If you’re looking for a more upbeat activity, the rapids on particular stretches of the Rappahannock are perfect for tubing and kayaking. When the water level is in the prime zone, the rapids are large enough to create several fun drops that are intriguing without reaching an unsafe level.
The Virginia Outdoor Center, conveniently located alongside the Rappahannock River, offers rentals for each of these types of activities, which is ideal for those who want to try a new adventure without making a financial commitment to purchasing their own equipment. Providing canoe, kayak, and tube rentals along with paddles, life vests, and even a shuttle service, the center will undoubtedly facilitate a day filled with fun.
Additionally, suppose you are a beginner and not yet confident enough to go out on the river without guidance. In that case, The Virginia
Outdoor Center offers various courses, all of which can be found on their website. These include everything from paddleboarding to rock climbing to “White Water Essentials.”
Another vital service that Virginia Outdoor Center provides is a safety talk. No matter how experienced one may be with such activities and scenarios, it is still essential to ensure utmost safety because although these are enjoyable activities, they are still associated with high levels of risk. The following are some critical river safety rules:
1. Always wear a life vest: Regardless of your age or swimming abilities, it’s critical to always wear a life vest in the river as the currents are strong and the ground is uneven. Additionally, it is crucial to ensure that the life vest fits properly.
2. Check conditions before you go: Like any river, the water level of the Rappahannock fluctuates regularly. It is essential to ensure that the water is neither too high nor too low, as both can lead to dangerous conditions. Keeping an eye on the weather is also essential, especially if thunderstorms are predicted.
3. Keep nose and toes above water: If something goes wrong and you end up adrift in the current, it’s essential to roll onto your back, keeping your nose out of the water with your toes pointed downstream and up out of the water to avoid hitting rocks.
