ROOTED IN EXPERIENCE AND FAMILY VALUES
BY MALLORY HARDGROVE PHOTOS COURTESY OF DIANA D’ALESSANDRO
At D’Alessandro Law PLLC, Diana D’Alessandro brings 15 years of legal expertise to her practice, specializing in a wide range of services including real estate transactions, estate planning, estate administration & probate, and civil litigation. Beyond her professional credentials, however, lies a story of family influence and personal mission that shape her approach to practicing law.
A Calling Discovered Early
“Growing up, I enjoyed watching CourtTV with my mom. I remember being fascinated by the lawyers and the entire court process,” Diana shares. “I admired the role of attorneys and how they would stand before a court on behalf of another, giving a voice to someone who, for whatever reason, was unable or afraid to speak for themselves.”
This early fascination wasn’t just passing curiosity. “I knew from a young age that I wanted to be a lawyer and, frankly, I never once considered a different profession,” she affirms.
Family Foundations
Her family background has profoundly shaped Diana’s legal journey. Coming from a law enforcement family, her path seemed destined for criminal law. Her father, a decorated DEA agent who retired as a Senior Executive, remains her primary inspiration.
“My Dad taught me the meaning of hard work and pursuing your passion. He never let anyone or anything stand in his way of achieving excellence,” Diana reflects. Though he passed away in 2021, just before she opened her practice, his influence remains constant. “Not a day goes by that I don’t think of him and how proud he would be of what I have achieved as an attorney and now a business owner. He continues to inspire me every day.”
Motherhood and Business Ownership
While her father’s legacy drove her professional excellence, her children inspired her entrepreneurial leap.
“My children are the primary reason I decided to open my own practice. I knew that being a business owner would allow me the flexibility to decide work/life

balance on my own terms for the first time in my career,” Diana explains. With two boys, ages 8 and 4, she has created a practice that honors both her professional calling and personal priorities. “I am, unapologetically, a mother first and attorney second.”
A Different Kind of Law Practice
Diana’s approach to law focuses on accessibility and compassion. “Contacting a lawyer - for any reason - can be intimidating. I have a genuine interest in being there for people who need help in an often difficult time of their lives,” she notes. “I aim to provide legal assistance in an approachable way so people are not afraid to contact me for help.”
This philosophy translates to meaningful client relationships across her practice areas. “My job is incredibly rewarding. I enjoy being there for people, earning their trust, and relieving their angst about whatever issue has brought them to me. I provide peace of mind to my estate planning clients; comfort and care to my estate administration clients; and zealous advocacy for my litigation clients who often just need to feel that someone is ‘in their corner.’”
D’Alessandro Law PLLC continues to grow, with Diana actively balancing her roles as attorney, business owner, and mother, while carrying forward the values of service and excellence instilled by her family legacy.

In the shadow of historic battlefields where key events have shaped America’s story, Steward and Malanna Henderson have written their own remarkable chapter—a romance that seems predestined and a shared passion for preserving and telling the stories that have shaped our nation.
A Dream Decades in the Making
When Steward and Malanna first crossed paths at the Trail to Freedom Symposium at the Fredericksburg Library in April 2013, neither could have imagined how their lives would intertwine. Yet for Steward, there was an immediate sense of déjà vu.
“Immediately, when she approached me, I had a flashback to a recurring dream that I had as a teenager,” recalls Steward, 72, who retired as a Senior Vice President and Area Manager from SunTrust Bank (now Truist Bank) before pursuing his passion for history. “Malanna looked exactly like the woman in my dream of over 47 years ago.”
This extraordinary connection wasn’t lost on Malanna either. “When Steward first told me I was the subject of his teenage dream, it sounded incredulous,” she admits. “Later, I felt it was a sign that we were meant to be together.” Their courtship unfolded against the backdrop of America’s most hallowed grounds, with a pivotal moment coming during a personal tour of the Gettysburg Battlefield that Steward gave Malanna in July 2013.
“Yes, I fell in love with him at Gettysburg,” Malanna shares with a smile. “I had never met a man who possessed intelligence, good looks, kindness, and showed real interest in what I had to say. He took my opinions seriously. He was always a gentleman. Falling in love with him was the easiest thing I’ve ever done.”
The couple, who recently posed for their magazine photoshoot in their wedding attire, embody a partnership built on mutual respect, shared interests, and a deep appreciation for history.
Keepers of History and Culture
Together, the Hendersons represent a formidable team dedicated to preserving and sharing history, particularly the often-overlooked stories of African Americans during pivotal moments in our nation’s past. The pair even tied the knot at Historic Salem Church in a Civil War wedding. Their com -

mitment invites us all to connect with our shared history.
Steward’s connection to the Fredericksburg area runs deep. “I have been coming to the Fredericksburg area since the 1950s. My mother’s family is from the Fredericksburg area,” he explains. “The first Civil War battlefield I visited was Fredericksburg, and I remember standing on Marye’s Heights, as a short little boy, and thinking I was standing on top of the world.”
After his banking career, Steward embraced his passion for history by becoming a Seasonal Park Ranger at the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park and a Battlefield Guide for the Battlefield Tours of Virginia. He co-founded the 23rd United States Colored Troops and is a member of Co. B 54th Massachusetts Volunteers, serving as a living historian and reenactor.
Malanna brings her own impressive credentials to their partnership. With a Bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Detroit and an MFA in Creative Writing from City University of New York, she has channeled her talents into playwriting, historical fiction, and performance. Her novel On the Wings of Freedom explores the Underground Railroad, and she’s written and directed numerous plays produced in the Fredericksburg area.
Last fall, Malanna founded Somewhere in Time Productions, Inc., to produce original works from local playwrights. She’s also a member of the Scandalous Women’s Sewing Circle, a group of reenactors who deliver first-person narratives about historical figures who challenged conventions.
A Community Transformed
For both Hendersons, Fredericksburg represents a home and a community they’ve watched evolve and grow.
“I have witnessed a community of all ethnicities and cultural backgrounds come together
for history and social events, and have fun and good dialogue,” Steward reflects. “I have seen the change from a very segregated town in the 1950s to what it is today!”
Malanna, who moved to the area from Detroit via New York about 20 years ago, has similarly embraced the community. “Fredericksburg is small enough to get to where you want to go within 20 or 30 minutes (outside of rush hour), but diverse enough to offer a variety of restaurants, theaters, outdoor and indoor concerts, lectures, libraries, bookstores, museums, churches,” she explains. “Moreover, I feel safe wherever I go.”
Her involvement at St. George’s Episcopal Church, where she participated in the Racial Justice and Healing Study Group for six years, exemplifies her commitment to fostering understanding.
“What a tremendous experience it was to learn little-known facts about our country’s history, the participants’ opinions, and express my points of view,” she says. “It was truly an educational adventure.”
Sharing Their Gifts
The Hendersons’ commitment to education and community service manifests in numerous ways. Steward has contributed essays to several Civil War books and local magazines and has appeared on C-SPAN3 discussing U.S. Colored Troops. He has given historical presentations to senior communities, churches, and schools, and even led Civil War tours of the Fredericksburg Battlefield for his senior citizen community residents.
HISTORIC SALEM CHURCH IN CIVIL WAR HISTORY
BY STEWARD T. HENDERSON

Malanna has won awards for her plays and writing, including first place in the Golden Nib contest of the Riverside Writers Group in 2022. She is the group’s vice president and has recently published works in their 2025 anthology. As a docent at Belmont, which she describes as “a gleaming gem on the hill,” she

Once upon a time Historic Old Salem Church sat upon a hill at what is now Salem Church Road and Plank Road. In 1955, the new Salem Church was built. Salem Church donated Historic Salem Church to the National Park Service in 1961. It is now one of the buildings of the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park.
Salem Church was an important, yet often overlooked, part of The Battle of Chancellorsville. The church was used as a hospital by both sides, and it served as a civilian refugee center during the Battle of Fredericksburg. Today, this part of the battlefield has been almost entirely destroyed by urban development. The church, the 15th New Jersey Monument, the 23rd New Jersey Monument, and one acre of ground are all that remain.
With the coming of the Civil War in 1861, many of the men in the congregation donned gray uniforms of what became the Army of Northern Virgin -
ia, and church attendance dwindled. In the spring and summer of 1862, the Union army occupied Fredericksburg but did not damage the city. The Union Army of the Potomac returned in November 1862. When the Battle of Fredericksburg loomed imminent, the citizens were advised to flee to safer places. Old Salem Church housed many unhappy refugees from Fredericksburg – inside and outside of the building!
All day long on December 11 these freezing, hungry people listened to the bombardment and watched the plumes of black smoke that billowed up from their beloved town. The worst fears of the refugees were realized when they returned to Fredericksburg after the battle. The town was in ruins from the bombardment and the subsequent looting by Federal troops.
In May 1863, during the Battle of Chancellorsville, the armies also fought the Battle of Second Fredericksburg and the Battle of Salem Church. On May 3rd, after overwhelming the Confederate force at Second Fredericksburg, the Union Sixth Corps slowly moved on to Salem Church. There was desperate fighting in the churchyard but Confederate reinforcements from Chancellorsville pushed the Union attack back. On May 4th, the Confederate brigades of generals McClaws, Anderson, and Early drove General Sedgwick’s Union Sixth Corps toward Banks Ford. Under the cover of heavy artillery from the guns that General Hunt set up, Sedgwick escapes, thus ending this battle.
During the battles of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House, Old Salem Church was a stop on the Union supply line. That supply line ran from the Plank Road to Belle Plain landing on the Potomac River. On May 19, 1864, the United States Colored Troops in the 4th Division of the Ninth Corps fought a skirmish against Confederate General Rosser’s Cavalry.
Historic Salem Church is a hidden treasure of the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park! It is also the church where my wife Malanna and I got married in a Civil War wedding!

shares her knowledge and appreciation for this historic estate.
Her talents also extend to music, occasionally performing as a featured jazz singer with “Jazz and a Mission,” a charity entity that raises funds for local causes.
A Legacy of Love and Learning
When not immersed in their historical pursuits, the Hendersons enjoy the rich cultural offerings of their community, from summer music venues at Market Square and the Central Library to the Fredericksburg Collective Jazz night at Colonial Tavern. They appreciate local dining establishments like Harry’s Alehouse, Capitol Alehouse, and the Clearwater Grill.
Family remains important to them, with visits to Philadelphia, the D.C. area, and California to spend time with their children, daughterin-law, and grandchildren. And they still hold a special place in their hearts for Williamsburg, their honeymoon location.
As they continue their journey together, Steward and Malanna Henderson represent the perfect blend of preserving the past while building a better future. Their shared passions, talents, and commitment to education and community service have enriched Fredericksburg immeasurably.
“Every year he’s dearer to me than the last,” Malanna says of her husband, summarizing a

love story that, like the history they both cherish, only grows more valuable with time. Through their writing, performances, educational efforts, and community involvement, the Hendersons ensure that the essential stories of Fredericksburg—including their own— continue to be told, preserving a legacy for generations to come.

WYATT’S CLOSET: SERVING LOCAL FAMILIES WITH COMPASSION & DIGNITY
BY MALLORY HARDGROVE PHOTOS COURTESY OF WYATT’S CLOSET
In the heart of Spotsylvania County, a compassionate organization is quietly making a profound difference in the lives of local families. Wyatt’s Closet, which started as a small outreach program in 2022, has blossomed into a vital support system for community members facing unexpected challenges. Its growth from one initiative to a significant community resource is a testament to the power of community and compassion, inspiring all who hear its story.
“What started as a small outreach to one Spotsylvania County school has grown into a remarkable support system for many in the community, especially during unexpected times of hardship,” founder, Ashley Woodcock, explains. Her journey began after witnessing the silent struggles of families lacking access to basic essentials.

The organization’s mission goes far beyond simple charity. “Our philosophy is rooted in compassion, responsiveness, and dignity,” Woodcock emphasizes.
We
believe no one should feel ashamed to ask for help, and we are committed to meeting needs quickly and discreetly.
Wyatt’s Closet provides a wide range of support, from school supplies and personal care items to emergency assistance during crises like house fires and flooding. This includes backpacks filled with school supplies, hygiene kits, and immediate financial aid for families affected by disasters.
What truly sets Wyatt’s Closet apart is its commitment to preserving the dignity of those it serves. The organization works tirelessly to ensure families receive support without judgment or embarrassment.
“Whether a family is facing financial hardship or recovering from a disaster, we aim to be a trusted and nonjudgmental source of support,” Woodcock shares, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to providing assistance without stigma or shame.
The holiday assistance program holds a special place in Woodcock’s heart.

“The amount of smiles, hugs, and even tears that are shared during those moments has left a lasting impression on me and our team,” she reflects. “It’s a powerful reminder that what we do goes beyond giving—it’s about connection, dignity, and love.”
Currently serving hundreds of families across the region, Wyatt’s Closet collaborates with local schools, emergency shelters, and community nonprofits. The organization’s reach continues to expand, driven by Woodcock’s unwavering inspiration.
“My biggest inspiration is the strength and resilience of the families we serve,” she says. “Seeing a parent or child smile after seeing something they need makes it all worth it.”
Woodcock extends a heartfelt invitation to the community: “We are always looking for volunteers, donors, and partners to help us expand our reach. Whether you want to contribute time, items, or help spread the word, we welcome you to join our mission.”
For those seeking support or assistance or to learn more about how you can make a difference, visit wyattscloset.org and become part of this remarkable community effort– because every act of kindness counts.

Is your carpet only a few years old and void of stains, but beginning to loosen and wrinkle? Is the only hope of restoring a new look by purchasing a brand-new carpet? The answer is maybe not. An alternative is called carpet stretching.
Carpet stretching is a process used to restore the appearance and functionality of carpets that have become loose, wrinkled, or stretched out over time. It involves pulling the carpet back into place to remove any sag-

ging or bunching, helping to create a smooth, flat surface. Our installation team at NK Floors uses specialized equipment to ensure the carpet is stretched evenly without causing damage.
Reasons for Carpet Stretching
Carpets can become loose and rippled due to poor installation, changes in humidity, and foot traffic. Stretching the carpet smooths out bumps and irregularities. Newly installed carpets may need stretching after a few months of settling if they weren’t stretched tightly enough initially. Carpets that are several years old can lose their tightness and start to sag. If the carpet is still in good condition, stretching can be more cost-effective than replacing it. When furniture has been rearranged or certain environmental factors have affected the carpet, it may shift and require stretching to return to its original position.
Stretching your carpet can help prevent further damage, such as tearing or fraying at the edges and matting, and it also helps maintain the carpet’s overall structural integrity. Several factors must be considered when deciding whether to stretch or replace the carpet in your home, particularly if the carpet is too old, worn out, severely damaged, or has deep stains.
The Restretching Process
Optimal results are achieved through skill and the right equipment. The NK Floors installation team will look for signs of wear, damage, or any underlying issues with the subfloor that could impact the stretching process and will ensure the carpet is not too old or damaged to stretch. The furniture is removed, and the carpet is lifted from its edges. The integrity of the baseboard and tack strip is checked and replaced if neces-

sary. The installation team will stretch the carpet from one end to another using a specialized power stretcher, pulling the rug taut and flattening the entire surface. The power stretcher’s tension ensures consistent carpet pulling, preventing wrinkles and sagging. In smaller areas, a carpet kicker is used. Once the carpet has been stretched into position, it is reattached to the tack strips along the room’s perimeter. Any excess carpet will be trimmed and secured, ensuring everything is firmly in place.
Carpet stretching cost-effectively enhances the appearance and longevity of your carpet. Consult with professionals like NK Floors to assess the condition of your carpet and ensure that stretching is the best solution for your home.

HONORING A JOURNEY: FROM GALVESTON TO VIRGINIA
BY MARIA NEGRON
PHOTOS COURTESY OF MARIA NEGRON
In the heart of Galveston, Texas, a young boy grew up surrounded by the rich cultural tapestry of the Gulf Coast. This was the beginning of an extraordinary life journey that would take him across the world and through the annals of history.
Growing up in the 1930s in Galveston, a city with deep-rooted traditions and a vibrant community, Percy Elliot Robinson, Jr. was part of a place known for its resilience and cultural heritage. Galveston holds a special place in history as the birthplace of Juneteenth, celebrating the end of slavery in the United States. This significant event, first celebrated in Galveston on June 19, 1865, marked a pivotal moment in American history. It symbolizes freedom, hope, and the enduring spirit of the African American community.
His inspirational life journey continued after leaving Galveston to study at Washington, D.C.’s prestigious HBCU, Howard University. After graduation, he joined the Navy, where he rose to the rank

of Navy Captain. This prestigious role took him across the seas and into diverse cultures, shaping his character and broadening his perspective on the world.
Eventually, his travels led him to Virginia, where he continued to build a life filled with meaningful contributions to his community and family. He was married to my grandmother for 74 years before she passed away this year. Their love and partnership were a cornerstone of his life, which has become a legacy for his family.
His story is a testament to the power of resilience, the pursuit of dreams, and the importance of honoring one’s heritage. I will never forget my 6thgrade writing assignment, where I chose to write

about my grandfather as my hero. Then and now, life has proven that he is, in fact, the greatest hero I know.
Today, as we reflect on his legacy and the significance of Juneteenth, we celebrate the enduring spirit of those who have come before us and the impact of their journeys on our own lives. More specifically, I am thankful for my grandfather, his love and dedication to the legacy that came before him, and ensuring that his children and grandchildren would continue to honor the same.

PLANNING THE FUTURE WITH BENNIE WALL OF CARRELL BLANTON FERRIS & ASSOCIATES
BY AMANDA KELLER

Bennie Wall is the Managing Principal in the Fredericksburg office of Carrell Blanton Ferris & Associates, PLC, a premier law firm that focuses exclusively on Estate Planning, Estate Administration, and Elder Law. Bennie joined the firm in 2017 as an estate administration associate. Early in his career, he witnessed firsthand how a lack of planning creates turmoil and stress for families during some of the most difficult moments. Bennie said, “I wanted to be part of the solution by helping families plan ahead so they could avoid unnecessary complications and experience smooth transitions when the time came.”
Wall explained, “Our guiding philosophy is simple: peace of mind through proactive planning. We believe that every family deserves a thoughtful, customized plan that not only reflects their values but also safeguards their legacy. Estate planning may seem procedural, but to us, it’s deeply personal. We help people preserve their stories, their wishes, and their legacies.”
Bennie’s own legacy is rooted in his family. He cited his grandfather, who passed away in 2014, as his greatest inspiration. Bennie’s grandfather was a supervisor at a local textile mill who also ran his own business – a small convenience store on Highway 58. Wall said, “No matter how busy he was, he always had time for family. He embodied wisdom, patience, and quiet strength – qualities I try to emulate in both my personal and professional life.”
Coming full circle, Bennie now finds inspiration in his own 5-month-old son, who is currently in the giggling, rolling, and bright-eyed stage of life. Wall shared, “Every morning I see him as a blank slate full of potential, and he reminds me daily of the importance of protecting and planning for our loved ones.” Bennie and his wife, a dedicated teacher at Stafford High School, are both busy planning their lives around their new son. Bennie brings this personal goal of planning into his professional work, approaching every client with compassion, transparency, and a focus on long-term protection.

Wall said, “At our core, [Carrell Blanton Ferris] strives to make complex legal matters feel approachable, understandable, and even empowering for our clients. Planning isn’t just for the wealthy or the elderly – it’s for everyone.” Bennie continued, “Our goal is to be a trusted resource for you and your family, to answer your questions without judgment, and to help you feel secure about the future.”
When asked what it is like to work for Carrell Blanton Ferris, Bennie smiled, saying, “We’re a fun group – really! And thankfully, our clients are, too. Each day brings new people, new stories, and often, shared laughter.” He elaborated, “One of our favorite ongoing traditions involves a small plastic reindeer named Prince William. He makes surprise appearances around the office – hidden in filing cabinets, on bookshelves, or tucked behind monitors.” Wall explained, “It’s a running game to see how long it takes someone to find him. Sometimes, a client spots him first and gets a kick out of joining in on the fun by finding a new hiding spot. It’s little things like this that keep our environment lighthearted, connected, and just plain enjoyable.”
Wall pointed out that Carrell Blanton Ferris are not only in Fredericksburg but also have offices in Williamsburg, Richmond, and Virginia Beach. He said, “We serve families across Virginia with personalized legal guidance to protect what matters most. Whether preparing an estate plan, helping a family qualify for long term care assistance, or guiding a loved one through an estate’s administration, our mission is to bring clarity and peace of mind to every step of the process.”

DISASTER DOESN’T WAIT— HAVE A PLAN FOR YOUR PETS
BY DR. KATRINA SPIES, DVM, CHPV, CCRV, CVA, CVPP

Storms, fires, floods, even power outages can happen when we least expect them. While we often prepare emergency plans for ourselves and our families, pets are often an afterthought. They shouldn’t be. Our animals depend on us, especially in a crisis.
With June recognized as National Pet Preparedness Month, it’s a great reminder to make sure our pets are ready for the unexpected, too. Emergencies don’t wait, so thinking ahead now may save your pet’s life.

Build a Pet Emergency Kit
Just like humans need emergency supplies, so do pets. Ideally, assemble two kits: a larger one for sheltering at home and a smaller version that’s easy to grab if you have to leave in a hurry.
Your pet’s kit should include:
• Several days’ supply of food and water (3-7 days) along with bowls
• Medications and basic first aid supplies
• A sturdy leash, harness, and collar with ID
• A travel crate or carrier
• Copies of vaccination records and vet information
• Waste bags, litter, and cleaning supplies
• Comfort items like toys, treats, or bedding

Store everything in a waterproof container, and update it for freshness regularly.
Be Ready to Evacuate
If you have to evacuate home quickly, never leave pets behind. Know where pet-friendly hotels or shelters are in your area (www.GoPetFriendly. com). If you’re not home, know who could help evacuate your pets. Buddy up with neighbors, friends, or relatives who might step in if you’re unable to make it home.
Make sure your pet’s ID tags and microchip information are current and include an emergency contact who lives out of town. Keep a current selfie with your pet to prove ownership if you get separated. If you need to evacuate quickly, your pet must be easy to find and ready to travel. Reduce stress by getting them comfortable with their carrier in advance - leave it out in familiar areas, place treats or toys inside, and let them explore and get used to it on their own. Also, know where your pet tends to hide during storms or loud noises. In an emergency, you won’t want to waste time searching.
Stay Alert and Be Ready
Use emergency alert apps, like the one from FEMA, to stay informed about local hazards. Pay attention to and follow evacuation orders and weather updates. And bring your pets inside at the first sign of danger.
No one wants to think about disasters, but preparing now means less wor ry later. Take an hour this June to check your pet emergency supplies, review your plan, and make sure your pets are protected—just like the rest of your family.

A FAMILY TRADITION: THE 16TH ANNUAL FAWN LAKE TRIATHLON
BY JULIA PESNELL

PHOTOS BY MATT DEZEE
Julia Pesnell is a recent graduate of Riverbend High School. She was also a student of the Commonwealth Governor’s School and served as the Riverbend Junior Class President. Julia also ran cross country and track for the Riverbend High School team. She held the position of committee executive for the Spanish Honor Society and was a class representative for their chapter of HOSA. Beyond her leadership roles, Julia was a member of the National English Honor Society and remains actively involved in community service.
Summer has rolled around again and signaled by the sunshine and warm weather, it is time to sign up for the 16th annual Fawn Lake Triathlon! Whether you are one who regularly competes in such races, or maybe you and your family are just looking for something new to try, you certainly do not want to miss this event. It will take place on August 24th, 2025 and as always will be a family-friendly, fun time, meant for all ages with multiple tiers of races fitting for every skill level.
A triathlon held in a neighborhood may seem a farfetched idea, but Fawn Lake truly does have the perfect environment for such an event, from eager volunteers to a nearly flawless course. Mastermind behind the event, Jeff Kramer dives deeper into this, saying, “We run a very professional and efficient race…The lake is well maintained and safe. The bike and run routes are flattish, shady, and mostly car free. We have over 100 volunteers that add a friendly level unique to our race.”
There are many details organized to make this day possible, but, most special of all is that race proceeds go towards local charities, all of which are specially chosen and have an incredible tie to our community. This year, the proceeds will be split evenly between six charities: The Brisben Center, Micah Ministries, Squishy Face Crew Animal Rescue, Families of the Wounded, Leashes of Valor, and The Wilderness Church Food Pantry. Kramer explains these hand-selected choices, saying, “Our
goal is to directly impact folks in our community.”
He goes on to predict that proceeds will surmount $60,000, enough to make a gigantic difference within each of these charities.
The event also includes many unique features including awards for “Fastest Family” and “Fastest Fawn Laker”, a photo booth, free race photos, and free pizza, beer, and juice boxes.
On top of all these fun details, each year fresh twists are added to continually draw in new competitors. This year, one especially notable add-in and reward for anyone who breaks the course record is a flyover of the course in a biplane.
“I was just looking for something unique and the pilot Lee Fox lives in our neighborhood,” Kramer says. “I had never met him, so I sent him an email and he loved the idea. He even joked that he would be at the finish line to drug test any record breaker.”
As a result of the fun details of the event and its incredibly welcoming environment, the event continues to engage a growing audience. Kramer says, “This race has grown exponentially in the past five years, filling the field each of the past two years. This year we are expanding the field.”
To conclude, Kramer describes that one thing that truly encompasses his idea behind putting on such a race is family. He says, “My concept is built around the idea that the family prepares all summer long ‘together’. Then on race day competing

as a family supporting each other. Not the typical routine of driving to a sports field and cheering on the kids. But the entire family is competing.” This is truly what makes the event beyond special, seeing all of the smiles on the faces of the entire family as they encourage each other.
If you want to sign up to participate in this monumental event this year, head over to https://www. trisignup.com/Race/VA/Spotsylvania/FawnLakeTri. You won’t want to miss it!

RHS ROCKET LEAGUE TEAM
MAKES THEIR MARK
BY JULIA PESNELL

Riverbend encapsulates extreme versatility when it comes to student interest and strives to cultivate positive environments to help each student thrive and grow into their passions. The RHS Esports Rocket League team offers a welcoming, uplifting, and fun environment and has made strides this school year, entering onto the radar for competitive teams. The members compete playing a video game called Rocket League and current member, Colin Sims, describes the premise, saying, “Rocket League is a video game that is simply defined as soccer with cars that can fly and defy physics.”
The team competes in a fall and spring season with over 150 teams in Virginia through an online platform called PlayVS. At the conclusion of the regular season, the top 32 teams enter into a single elimination playoff bracket. Then, the top 16 teams head to a collegiate Esports arena for the VHSL Rocket League championship where they compete for the state title and rewards from PlayVS.
The 2025 spring season has been especially special for the RHS team, as they saw extreme growth and success. They had the opportunity to travel to the VHSL championship at Old Dominion University, and as Leonard (LJ) Kenon says, “There are many aspects I love about the team, but the one aspect I love the most is traveling to different universities for the VHSL state tournaments and seeing their dedicated spaces for ESports. They always look amazing…”
During this competition, teams compete head-tohead in 7 round matches where the first team to win 4 rounds moves on to the next round. Going
into the tournament, RHS knew their first round was going to be extremely difficult as they were facing a team out of Woodson High who has never lost a single round. But, instead of going in nervous and intimidated as they had back in the fall, the team went in, as Kenon says, “fired up.” Sims continues on the technique, saying, “We studied their gameplay and figured out what they lacked so we could capitalize on their little mistakes.”
RHS lost to Woodson the first three rounds, but stepped up on the fourth, forcing Woodson into overtime, and eventually beating them by 1 point. Though RHS ultimately was not able to move past that round, they left very excited. Kenon says, “We walked home with our heads held up high, knowing we gave Woodson High School their first ever loss!” Sims furthered this sentiment, saying, “The arena was completely shocked that the greatest team VHSL has ever seen lost a game to the upcoming superstars.”
These developments didn’t spark overnight, and took hours upon hours of dedication both inside and outside of practice. With this said, the team is constantly searching to recruit new members. Kenon says, “We want to let everyone know that it doesn’t matter what your skill level is. If you can boot up one of the games ESports has to offer, you can make the team.”
Sims concludes, saying, “I am excited to see that the world of esports has entered a high school level, which gives lots of kids who play these games a chance to compete at what they have put hours and hours of time into.”

A YEAR OF CULTURE AND COMMUNITY
BY JULIA PESNELL PHOTO BY JEROME FARLEY
As the school year is winding down with exams, awards ceremonies, and end-of-year celebrations, each organization is hosting their final events and reflecting on all they have accomplished over the past 10 months.
Spanish Honor Society is no different and saved one of their most exciting events for last: a cultural dinner. After hours of deliberation, trying to decide on the best date and location, everything was set and about a dozen Spanish Honor Society Bears met up for dinner at the local Hacienda El Patron. While this was a fun way for the members to get together, and converse, it also signaled the close of the Spanish Honor Society’s events for this year, and called for reflection.
The organization has seen major success and growth this year. With a new sponsor and students stepping up into officer positions, almost everything was built from the ground up. The whole goal of the group is to spread love and awareness for the Spanish language and culture through community service events, and also cultivate an environment for its members to grow in their passion through social events.
When talking to the president of the organization, Addison Pennings, she says, “My favorite part about being an officer for Spanish Honor Society is that I get to lead a group of students in helping our community and school recognize the diversity we have all around us.” Pennings was a senior this school year and was an active member of Spanish Honor Society for the latter three years of high school. She has recently taken lead in electing officers to step in to fill open officer positions next school year and is most certainly passing off a big torch as she has set a very high precedence for the remarkable role that the president and all other officers of the organization should play.

Throughout the school year, Spanish Honor Society is constantly involved in service activities through the school’s world language department and through the community, but one especially important event is the monthly volunteer opportunities at Chancellor Elementary School. Pennings agrees on the immense impact of the event as she says, “Each month we get to share a little piece of the Hispanic culture to the children, teaching them about how some of their peers and classmates celebrate certain holidays or cook various foods.”
Though this article can’t even begin to sum up all that these members achieved throughout the school year, it can begin to give you an idea. With a new sponsor the organization improved and saw significant growth, and as Pennings says, “With our new sponsor we were able to get a new perspective on how our honor society would be run.” She continues on about the organization’s growth, “This year we were able to have over 50 members in our chapter who were able to give back to the community and celebrate Hispanic culture.”
Going into summer, each of the Spanish Honor Society members can walk with their heads held high knowing that through all they involved themselves in this past school year, they truly made a difference not only within RHS but in the wider community, as well. Pennings concludes, “As a society, we accomplished so much with efforts from all of the members.”

Pistachio Flower Craft
BY MORA SOAN, AUTHOR OF THE SERIES: ADVENTURES OF JACOB THE GNOME

Materials:
☐ Clean, dry pistachio shells
☐ Hot glue gun and glue sticks
☐ Bamboo skewers (for stems)
☐ Paint (any color)
☐ Paintbrush

Directions:
Step 1:
Wash the pistachio shells with warm, soapy water. Rinse and dry them completely.
Step 2:
Cut the bamboo skewers into different lengths to create flower stems of various heights.
Step 3:
Take one pistachio shell and place a good amount of hot glue inside it. Attach the top of a skewer into the glue inside the shell. Quickly press a second pistachio shell on the opposite side of the skewer, sandwiching the skewer between the two shells to form a flower bud.
Step 4:
This activity is brought to you by Mora Soan, author of the children’s book, Jacob in Japan! Jacob is a gnome who lives in New York. He owns a beautiful garden on the rooftop of a skyscraper. He is a picky eater and he only eats ordinary bland food. One windy night, Jacob falls into a magic flower pot. He wakes up in Japan. What will he do next? Will Jacob starve himself or will he find a way to enjoy and experience Japan? With an open mind, he may discover new and delicious foods that he never knew existed. Jacob in Korea is now available on Amazon.
To purchase a book, visit your local Barnes and Noble and follow Jacob’s story on Instagram @jacob_the_gnome.

Once the bud is secure at the top of the skewer, begin gluing more pistachio shells around the bud. Hold the skewer upright and continue adding shells around it in a circular pattern, forming petals. Keep layering shells until your flower reaches the size you want.
Step 5:
Once all the glue is dry, paint the flowers in any colors you like!
Let the paint dry completely before handling.

Place your finished flowers in a vase or jar, and surprise a loved one with a beautiful handmade bouquet!
