PREFINISHED VS. UNFINISHED HARDWOOD FLOORS:
WHAT’S RIGHT FOR YOUR HOME?
The choice between prefinished and unfinished wood can feel overwhelming when it comes to hardwood flooring. Both offer timeless beauty and long-lasting durability, but understanding the differences is key to selecting the best option for your lifestyle, budget, and timeline. At Pacheco’s Hardwood Floors, we’ve helped homeowners throughout Fredericksburg and the surrounding areas make smart, stylish decisions for over a decade. Here’s what you need to know.
Prefinished
Hardwood:
Convenience and Consistency
Prefinished hardwood flooring is exactly what it sounds like—factory-finished planks that arrive at your home already sanded, stained, and sealed. This option is ideal for homeowners who want a faster, cleaner installation process. Since there’s no on-site sanding or staining, prefinished floors reduce dust, odors, and downtime. Depending on room size, most installations can be completed within a day or two.
Prefinished wood also offers a more consistent finish. Because it’s manufactured in a controlled environment, each plank has a uniform stain and a highly durable topcoat— often cured with UV technology—that resists scratches and moisture. This durability is a significant advantage for families with pets, kids, or high-traffic areas; however, it is important to note that prefinished hardwood can be more costly than unfinished hardwood.

Unfinished Hardwood: Customization and Seamless Beauty
Unfinished hardwood flooring offers greater customization and a truly seamless appearance. The wood is installed, and the raw wood is sanded, stained, and sealed on-site. This means you can choose the exact shade, sheen, and finish that matches your vision. It also allows for a completely flush surface, which is especially important in homes with irregular subfloors or when blending new floors with existing wood.
Unfinished floors are a favorite among homeowners seeking a specific aesthetic, such as a vintage or hand-scraped look. They also provide more flexibility when working with exotic woods or intricate inlay patterns.
Lastly, some homeowners often save money by adding unfinished hardwood to areas without any existing hardwood, saving costs because they do not have to buy as much material.

Which One Should You Choose?
Your lifestyle and renovation goals should guide your decision. If you’re renovating a single room and want a quick, mess-free installation, prefinished is likely your best bet. If you’re building a custom home or restoring an older property and want total control over the final look, unfinished may be worth the extra time.
No matter your choice, proper installation is critical to the beauty and longevity of your floors. At Pacheco’s Hardwood Floors, we specialize in both prefinished and unfinished hardwood installation. Our skilled team provides expert guidance, top-quality craftsmanship, and unmatched attention to detail—from the first consultation to the final finish, helping you find the most affordable options to suit your needs and your vision.
Let’s bring your vision to life. Call us at 571383-5946 or visit us in Stafford to explore the best hardwood options for your home.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS:
The Hudson Family Finds Their Perfect Balance in Stafford
By Mallory Hardgrove • Photos Courtesy of Karen Presecan Photography & Christina Hudson
In the vibrant community of Embrey Mill, the Hudson family– Christina, Bryan, Saniya, Devon, and London– has crafted more than just a house—they’ve built a home where five distinct personalities blend into one harmonious unit. This close-knit blended family represents the modern American dream: finding connection, building community, and creating meaningful lives together in a place they love.
A Love Story Built on Laughter
The foundation of the Hudson household begins with a love story that started, fittingly enough, with laughter. At a mutual friend’s barbecue, a simple game sparked what would become a lifelong connection.
“We ended up laughing our way through a silly guessing game about our ages. The more we played, the more ridiculous the guesses became,” recalls Christina. “At one point, Bryan guessed I was ten years older than I actually was, and I threw it back at him, guessing he was closer to 50 than 30! We were both cracking up, teasing each other like old friends.” That playful beginning blossomed quickly into something deeper. After two months of what she describes as “courting,” they made their relationship official. Their bond solidified during a memorable cruise vacation—a trip that would establish a family tradition.
“We were sitting on the deck, watching the sunset as the sky turned shades of pink and orange. It felt like time had stopped,” she remembers. “In that quiet, beautiful moment, I

realized just how special our connection was. It was more than just a vacation—it felt like a turning point in our relationship.”
Building a Blended Family
Today, the Hudson home buzzes with the energy of five unique individuals. Bryan works in logistics, while Christina is transitioning careers after retiring from the Marines with a business degree. She just graduated with her second degree in Health and Physical Education, embracing a new chapter in her professional journey.
The children—Saniya, 21, Devon, and London, both 14—each bring their own passions to the family dynamic. Saniya studies at The Esthetic Institute, pursuing her passion for health and beauty.
“She’s passionate about health and beauty and loves learning about skincare and wellness,” Christina explains. Devon finds joy in gaming and technology, while London thrives as an accomplished student-athlete.
“London is an all-star student-athlete, with a special love for football,” Christina says proudly. “He’s dedicated to the sport and al-

ways embraces his passion, both on and off the field.”
Devon’s passion for gaming and tech is evident as well. “He’s always exploring new ways to build and create in the digital world,” Christina explains. “Whether it’s a video game marathon or discovering new games, he’s always up for a good time.”
Finding Their Stafford Home
The Hudsons’ connection to Stafford spans over a decade, but they made it official in January 2021 when they purchased their home in Embrey Mill. The decision felt right for numerous reasons.
“What we love most about living in Stafford is the friendly atmosphere and the strong sense of community,” they explain. “It’s a peaceful area, yet we’re close enough to Fredericksburg and other attractions to enjoy a variety of activities.”
The convenience of having work, school, and home all within a 7-mile radius has been invaluable for their busy family life. This proximity allows them more quality time together—something they treasure through ac-

tivities like family bike rides, escape rooms, and movie nights.
Community Connections
For the Hudsons, community extends beyond their front door. Neighbors have become like family, sharing life’s ups and downs with genuine care.
“Our neighbors are an important part of our lives, and we truly value the sense of connection and community we’ve built together,” they share.
“They’re like family, and we’re always there to support each other, whether celebrating milestones with thoughtful graduation gifts, keeping a watchful eye out for irregular activity, or sharing a laugh during lively discussions.”
Those discussions often revolve around everyday challenges, like irrigation systems, that become opportunities for connection rather than mere frustrations.
“With another hot summer on the horizon, the jokes are already flowing faster than our sprinklers,” they laugh. “One neighbor even joked that we should just install a community car wash to recoup the costs!”
Supporting Local
The Hudsons make a conscious effort to invest in their community by shopping and dining locally. Embrey Mill Town Center has become a central hub for their family outings and daily needs.
“Embrey Mill Town Center itself is truly the best thing since sliced bread,” they enthuse. “We also can’t forget the small but mighty Shops of Amyclae, like Tea’Go Cafe, which serves organic coffee and refreshing Boba tea.”
Their favorite local spots include Cinnaholic for sweet treats and The DripBar for health-focused services. The family is also connected to F45 Stafford, highlighting their commitment to fitness and wellness.

For entertainment, they enjoy catching movies in Fredericksburg and dining at Cane’s or El Viejón Mexican Grill & Bar. They also frequent the local skating rink and pistol range—varied activities that reflect their diverse interests.
Adventures Together
When it’s time for vacation, this family of five has discovered their perfect getaway formula.

“Our favorite way to vacation as a family of five is by going on cruises,” they share. “Cruises are the perfect all-inclusive option for us— they’re affordable, offer something for everyone, and allow us to explore multiple destinations without the hassle of constant packing and unpacking.”
While cruises remain their go-to, they dream of expanding their horizons with adventures in Africa, riding camels, visiting the pyramids, and relaxing on the beaches of the Turks and Caicos.
A Future Together in Stafford
As they continue building their lives in Stafford, the Hudsons exemplify what makes this community special—families who choose to put down roots, engage with neighbors, and actively contribute to local life.
With Bryan and London sharing an unexpected connection—both attended H.H. Poole Middle School and had the same coach before his retirement—the family’s ties to the area run deeper than just their address. They represent continuity and growth in a community they’ve chosen to call home.
Through their daily rhythms of work, school, volunteering, and family fun, the Hudsons embody the spirit of Stafford: warm, engaged, and always ready to lend a hand or share a laugh with neighbors they consider family.
“We’re committed to building community within Stafford,” they affirm, “and we make a point to shop, eat, and live locally.”
In a world where people often live disconnected from their communities, the Hudson family serves as a reminder of the richness that comes from putting down roots, investing in relationships, and finding

WYATT’S CLOSET: SERVING LOCAL FAMILIES WITH COMPASSION & DIGNITY
In the heart of Spotsylvania County, a compassionate organization is quietly making a profound difference in the lives of local families. Wyatt’s Closet, which started as a small outreach program in 2022, has blossomed into a vital support system for community members facing unexpected challenges. Its growth from one initiative to a significant community resource is a testament to the power of community and compassion, inspiring all who hear its story.
“What started as a small outreach to one Spotsylvania County school has grown into a remarkable support system for many in the community, especially during unexpected times of hardship,” founder, Ashley Woodcock, explains. Her journey began after witnessing the silent struggles of families lacking access to basic essentials.

The organization’s mission goes far beyond simple charity. “Our philosophy is rooted in compassion, responsiveness, and dignity,” Woodcock emphasizes.
We believe no one should feel ashamed to ask for help, and we are committed to meeting needs quickly and discreetly.
Wyatt’s Closet provides a wide range of support, from school supplies and personal care items to emergency assistance during crises like house fires and flooding. This includes backpacks filled with school supplies, hygiene kits, and immediate financial aid for families affected by disasters.
What truly sets Wyatt’s Closet apart is its commitment to preserving the dignity of those it serves. The organization works tirelessly to ensure families receive support without judgment or embarrassment.
“Whether a family is facing financial hardship or recovering from a disaster, we aim to be a trusted and nonjudgmental source of support,” Woodcock shares, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to providing assistance without stigma or shame.

The holiday assistance program holds a special place in Woodcock’s heart.
“The amount of smiles, hugs, and even tears that are shared during those moments has left a lasting impression on me and our team,” she reflects. “It’s a powerful reminder that what we do goes beyond giving— it’s about connection, dignity, and love.”
Currently serving hundreds of families across the region, Wyatt’s Closet collaborates with local schools, emergency shelters, and community nonprofits. The organization’s reach continues to expand, driven by Woodcock’s unwavering inspiration.
“My biggest inspiration is the strength and resilience of the families we serve,” she says. “Seeing a parent or child smile after seeing something they need makes it all worth it.”
Woodcock extends a heartfelt invitation to the community: “We are always looking for volunteers, donors, and partners to help us expand our reach. Whether you want to contribute time, items, or help spread the word, we welcome you to join our mission.”
For those seeking support or assistance or to learn more about how you can make a difference, visit wyattscloset.org and become part of this remarkable community effort– because every act of kindness counts.

Scoring His Own Path: How Patrick Wilt Is Shaping Stafford’s Soundscape

Abigail Nyinaku is a rising senior at Colonial Forge High School. Outside of writing, she enjoys making art, playing the violin, and has a strong passion for legal studies. Abigail is also the current Parliamentarian of her school’s National Honor Society and runs a handmade personalized greetingcard business, called Heartfelt, in her free time.
Colonial Forge High School rising sophomore Patrick Wilt is making a mark on the world of music, one composition at a time. By sharing his music with classmates and friends, Patrick has helped foster a welcoming music community where creativity thrives, ideas are exchanged, and students challenge one another to grow.
Patrick’s journey began in middle school, inspired by his sister Nadia’s involvement in band. “I was inspired to play an instrument when my older sister Nadia joined her school band,” Patrick recalls. However, he chose a different route, joining the orchestra and gravitating towards the cello.
The instrument’s rich sound captivated him, and he found further inspiration in the works of composers like Ravel, Tchaikovsky, Dvořák, and Litvinosky. “I enjoy analyzing the musical choices of soloists and chamber performers when I listen to a piece,” he says, “especially when I am familiar with a piece.”

Patrick’s approach to composition is rooted in experimentation. “Generally, I come up with an idea through experimenting on my cello or inspiration from another piece, then start to score it for string orchestra,” he explains. His first compositions were performed by his middle school orchestra, but his musical ambitions began to soar in seventh grade when he discovered the MakeMusic Cloud software. This platform allowed him to experiment with different musical ideas and refine his compositional process.

Patrick emphasizes the importance of meaning in his work: “I wanted to be the one behind the wheel deciding who played what and how it should all fit together, not a random name on a method book or song from my teacher.”
One of Patrick’s favorite pieces is an untitled piece he wrote for his eighth-grade orchestra’s final concert. While its message was initially unclear to him, he now views it as a meditation on the choices people make over time. “After stepping back and examining the piece objectively,” he reflects, “it seems to portray something akin to repeating our mistakes across time, a darker sort of ‘history repeats itself’ mentality.”
For Patrick, composing is more than an assignment — it’s a way to process his emotions. “I often think that my inner emotional state would be much worse if I didn’t have composing as an outlet for alleviating my stress,” he says.
Through music, Patrick has found a sense of belonging and opportunity. “Music has brought me to a wonderful and welcoming community here in Stafford,” he shares. “Simply being in an orchestra class helps me build relationships with my peers that would be otherwise weak or nonexistent.” His involvement with the Virginia Cello Ensembles has further challenged and inspired him, connecting him to talented cellists of all ages.
Looking ahead, Patrick plans to minor in music and continue composing as an adult. He encourages others to seek out communities where they can express themselves and collaborate.
“I believe that music provides people with the ability to enter a diverse community of otherwise unrelated people that all share similar interests and commitments,” Patrick says.
He hopes to continue composing and inspiring others to embrace new challenges, helping to create a vibrant musical culture in Stafford.

THE ULTIMATE BRIDAL SKINCARE GUIDE
With your wedding day on the horizon, it’s never too early to start checking off those todos, especially when it comes to feeling confident in your skin. Your year will be jam-packed with events, so having a strategized annual game plan allows you to achieve the skin of your dreams.
Where to Begin:
Complimentary Consultation
Newly engaged? The best place to start your bridal journey is with an initial consultation with an aesthetic provider at Thistle Medical Aesthetics. A consultation is the perfect way to address any concerns you have, your vision, and to create a manageable treatment plan that helps you meet those goals.
Ideally, starting your aesthetic journey a year before your wedding may assist you in planning out a more relaxed timeline, giving us ample time to work with you to tackle treatments, make gradual adjustments, and allocate for downtime. Follow this bridal timeline for the ultimate glow!
One Year Out
Start early with wrinkle relaxers like Botox, Dysport, or Daxxify to smooth lines and prevent deeper wrinkles from forming. When done quarterly, they allow your muscles to relax for a natural, youthful appearance.

Dermal fillers are perfect for subtle volume restoration and contouring in areas like the lips, cheeks, and jawline. Biostimulators like Sculptra can also be introduced to gradually boost your body’s natural collagen for longer-term rejuvenation.
Daily: At-Home Skincare Routine
Having a customized skincare regimen helps you build a solid foundation, while in-studio visits address more specific or severe skin concerns to get you closer to your goals!
Nine Months Out
Now’s the time to focus on tone and texture. While injectables are amazing for tackling fine lines and wrinkles, they are only one piece of the puzzle! Morpheus8 RF Microneedling is a game-changer for improving skin texture, tightening, and boosting deep collagen production. Lumecca IPL Photofacials target sun damage, pigmentation, and redness for an even complexion. We may recommend multiple treatments so that you see your best result, so starting early is best!
Six Months Out
It’s the halfway mark! If you haven’t tried collagen stimulation, now’s the time to allow for collagen rebuilding. SkinPen Microneedling stim-

ulates collagen and improves texture for the ultimate glow. Add PRP for enhanced healing!
Three Months Out
Keep up with your Botox and consider dermal fillers to subtly enhance your features. This timeline gives enough time for swelling to subside and the product to fully integrate. Chemical peels can also be introduced now for smoother skin and a more even tone, helping makeup sit flawlessly on your big day.
One Month Out
Let the countdown begin! It’s the final time to touch up your Botox so that peak effects set in before your wedding day. Results typically take up to two weeks to settle, which leaves just enough time for adjustments if necessary. The week of, book a DiamondGlow Microdermabrasion to exfoliate and hydrate, or try our Beyond Botox Facial for a lifted, radiant finish that lasts up to five days. You’ll leave glowing, refreshed, and photo-ready!
Whether you’re planning a grand affair or something intimate, we’d love to be a part of your bridal aesthetic journey. Book your consultation with one of our aesthetic providers so that we may help you create the perfect plan so you’re absolutely radiating with confidence on your special day!

CARPET STRETCHING: THE SOFT SURFACE FACELIFT

Karie, a native of Pennsylvania, cherishes her roots in faith and family above all else. Together with her husband and their nine children, they have fearlessly embraced life’s adventures, including living in Africa and establishing a successful business. Beyond her roles as a dedicated wife and mother, Karie is a passionate educator, talented musician, and enthusiastic traveler. Her love for exploring new cultures and experiencing the world is matched only by her appreciation for a good cup of coffee.
Is your carpet only a few years old and void of stains, but beginning to loosen and wrinkle? Is the only hope of restoring a new look by purchasing a brand-new carpet? The answer is maybe not. An alternative is called carpet stretching.
Carpet stretching is a process used to restore the appearance and functionality of carpets that have become loose, wrinkled, or stretched out over time. It involves pulling the carpet back into place to remove any sagging or bunching, helping to create a smooth, flat surface. Our installation team at NK Floors uses specialized equipment to ensure the carpet is stretched evenly without causing damage.

WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK NK FLOORS FOR BRINGING YOU THIS

© Best Version Media
Reasons for Carpet Stretching
Carpets can become loose and rippled due to poor installation, changes in humidity, and foot traffic. Stretching the carpet smooths out bumps and irregularities. Newly installed carpets may need stretching after a few months of settling if they weren’t stretched tightly enough initially. Carpets that are several years old can lose their tightness and start to sag. If the carpet is still in good condition, stretching can be more cost-effective than replacing it. When furniture has been rearranged or certain environmental factors have affected the carpet, it may shift and require stretching to return to its original position.
Stretching your carpet can help prevent further damage, such as tearing or fraying at the edges and matting, and it also helps maintain the carpet’s overall structural integrity. Several factors must be considered when deciding whether to stretch or replace the carpet in your home, particularly if the carpet is too old, worn out, severely damaged, or has deep stains.
The Restretching Process

Optimal results are achieved through skill and the right equipment. The NK Floors installation team will look for signs of wear, damage, or any underlying issues with the subfloor that could impact the stretching process and will ensure the carpet is not too old or damaged to stretch.
The furniture is removed, and the carpet is lifted from its edges. The integrity of the baseboard and tack strip is checked and replaced if necessary. The installation team will stretch the carpet from one end to another using a specialized power stretcher, pulling the rug taut and flattening the entire surface. The power stretcher’s tension ensures

consistent carpet pulling, preventing wrinkles and sagging. In smaller areas, a carpet kicker is used. Once the carpet has been stretched into position, it is reattached to the tack strips along the room’s perimeter. Any excess carpet will be trimmed and secured, ensuring everything is firmly in place.
Carpet stretching cost-effectively enhances the appearance and longevity of your carpet. Consult with professionals like NK Floors to assess the condition of your carpet and ensure that stretching is the best solution for your home.

HONORING A JOURNEY: FROM GALVESTON TO VIRGINIA

In the heart of Galveston, Texas, a young boy grew up surrounded by the rich cultural tapestry of the Gulf Coast. This was the beginning of an extraordinary life journey that would take him across the world and through the annals of history.

Growing up in the 1930s in Galveston, a city with deep-rooted traditions and a vibrant community, Percy Elliot Robinson, Jr. was part of a place known for its resilience and cultural heritage. Galveston holds a special place in history as the birthplace of Juneteenth, celebrating the end of slavery in the United States. This significant event, first celebrated in Galveston on June 19, 1865, marked a pivotal moment in American history. It symbolizes freedom, hope, and the enduring spirit of the African American community.
His inspirational life journey continued after leaving Galveston to study at Washington, D.C.’s prestigious HBCU, Howard University. After graduation, he joined the Navy, where he rose to the rank of Navy Captain. This prestigious role took him across the seas and into diverse cultures, shaping his character and broadening his perspective on the world.
Eventually, his travels led him to Virginia, where he continued to build a life filled with meaningful contributions to his community and family. He was married to my grandmother for 74 years before she passed away this year. Their love and partnership were a cornerstone of his life, which has become a legacy for his family.
His story is a testament to the power of resilience, the pursuit of dreams, and the importance of honoring one’s heritage. I will never forget my 6th-grade writing assignment, where I chose to write about my grand-

father as my hero. Then and now, life has proven that he is, in fact, the greatest hero I know.
Today, as we reflect on his legacy and the significance of Juneteenth, we celebrate the enduring spirit of those who have come before us and the impact of their journeys on our own lives. More specifically, I am thankful for my grandfather, his love and dedication to the legacy that came before him, and ensuring that his children and grandchildren would continue to honor the same.

HARDSCAPING: MORE THAN CURB APPEAL— IT’S A SMART INVESTMENT IN YOUR PROPERTY
Hardscaping refers to your landscape’s permanent, non-living elements, like patios, retaining walls, walkways, and even boat ramps. These features add structure and style to your outdoor space and serve practical purposes that increase your property’s functionality, value, and long-term durability. At Lewis Enterprises, we specialize in designing and building high-quality hardscapes that do more than just look good—they work hard for your home.

Whether you’re looking for a cozy space for two or a wide area for hosting, we build with comfort, durability, and beauty in mind.

Lewis Enterprises has the experience to build safe, durable ramps suited to your specific shoreline conditions. Don’t settle for a shared or poorly maintained ramp when you can have your own, built to last.

A FAMILY TRADITION: THE 16TH ANNUAL FAWN LAKE TRIATHLON
Summer has rolled around again and signaled by the sunshine and warm weather, it is time to sign up for the 16th annual Fawn Lake Triathlon! Whether you are one who regularly competes in such races, or maybe you and your family are just looking for something new to try, you certainly do not want to miss this event. It will take place on August 24th, 2025 and as always will be a family-friendly, fun time, meant for all ages with multiple tiers of races fitting for every skill level.
A triathlon held in a neighborhood may seem a far-fetched idea, but Fawn Lake truly does have the perfect environment for such an event, from eager volunteers to a nearly flawless course. Mastermind behind the event, Jeff Kramer dives deeper into this, saying, “We run a very professional and efficient race…The lake is well maintained and safe. The bike and run routes are flattish, shady, and mostly car free. We have over 100 volunteers that add a friendly level unique to our race.”
There are many details organized to make this day possible, but, most special of all is that race proceeds go towards local charities, all of which are specially chosen and have an incredible tie to our community. This year, the proceeds will be split evenly between six charities: The Brisben Center, Micah Ministries, Squishy Face Crew Animal Rescue, Families of the Wounded, Leashes of Valor, and The Wilderness Church Food Pantry. Kramer explains these hand-selected choices, saying, “Our goal is to directly impact folks in our community.” He goes on to predict that proceeds will surmount $60,000, enough to make a gigantic difference within each of these charities.
The event also includes many unique features including awards for “Fastest Family” and “Fastest Fawn Laker”, a photo booth, free race photos, and free pizza, beer, and juice boxes.
On top of all these fun details, each year fresh twists are added to continually draw in new competitors. This year, one especially notable add-in and reward for anyone who breaks the course record is a flyover of the course in a biplane.
“I was just looking for something unique and the pilot Lee Fox lives in our neighborhood,” Kramer says. “I had never met him, so I sent him an email and he loved the idea. He even joked that he would be at the finish line to drug test any record breaker.”

As a result of the fun details of the event and its incredibly welcoming environment, the event continues to engage a growing audience. Kramer says, “This race has grown exponentially in the past five years, filling the field each of the past two years. This year we are expanding the field.”
To conclude, Kramer describes that one thing that truly encompasses his idea behind putting on such a race is family. He says, “My concept is built around the idea that the family prepares all summer long ‘together’. Then on race day competing as a family supporting each other. Not the typical routine of driving to a sports field and cheering on the kids. But the entire family is competing.” This is truly what makes the event beyond special, seeing all of the smiles on the faces of the entire family as they encourage each other.
If you want to sign up to participate in this monumental event this year, head over to https://www.trisignup.com/Race/VA/Spotsylvania/ FawnLakeTri. You won’t want to miss it!

SWING THE BAT. IT’S NOT TOO LATE.

Cherice Taylor, M.A. in Education Administration and Center Director at Sylvan Learning, is an experienced educator and community leader. She is a Charter member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Psi Psi Omega Chapter. With a strong commitment to service and community improvement, she is a military spouse, a poet, mother of four, and advocates the philosophy of “Service to All Mankind.”
School’s out, the final bell has rung, and the lazy days of summer have officially arrived. But as you glance around at your kids, a familiar thought might creep in: are they truly destined for a summer of endless lounging and inactivity? As you navigate your own daily routine of work and household responsibilities, the contrast can be stark. A casual “What have you been up to today?” might be met with a nonchalant “Just relaxing” or “Nothing much yet.”
We all understand the need for a break, a chance to exhale after a potentially challenging school year. Rest is essential, a well-deserved reward for their hard work. Yet, life continues its relentless rhythm, doesn’t it? How do we strike that delicate balance between providing our students with the downtime they need and equipping them for the ever-evolving landscape that awaits them after high school?
The answer, in short, is action. They need to step up to the plate and swing the bat. It doesn’t necessarily mean hitting a grand slam every time, but it absolutely means engaging with the world around them in a productive way. Whether it’s earning some income for future goals like a car or further education, increasing their savings, or simply making constructive use of their time, the key is involvement.
Here are a few tips and recommendations to encourage your students to step off the sidelines and into the game:
• Apply for a job: The traditional summer job offers invaluable experience in responsibility, time management, and the fundamentals of earning a living.
• Volunteer: There are opportunities at local libraries, school summer programs, or community camps. Volunteering allows them to contribute to their community, explore potential interests, and develop valuable skills.
• Seek micro-internships or shadowing opportunities: Encourage them to reach out to friends or family who own businesses

• Take a summer course: Many high schools and community colleges offer accelerated summer courses, allowing students to get ahead academically or explore new subjects.
• Offer pet-sitting or house-sitting services: This fosters responsibility and provides a way to earn some money while helping others.
• Explore neighborhood odd jobs: Simple tasks like offering to help neighbors with yard work, such as cutting grass, can be a great way to earn money and contribute to the community.
The list is endless, but the underlying principle remains: engaging in meaningful activities during the summer is crucial. It’s about more than just filling time; it’s about building character, instilling a sense of responsibility, understanding timelines, cultivating professionalism, and developing those essential soft skills that are increasingly vital in the workforce.
Speaking from experience as a parent of four sons, we embraced many of these opportunities. Some experiences they enjoyed, others not so much, but each one contributed to their growth and development. As summer unfolds quickly, I encourage you to help your students find their own way to swing the bat. The opportunities are there; it’s about

DISASTER DOESN’T WAIT—
HAVE A PLAN FOR YOUR PETS

Storms, fires, floods, even power outages can happen when we least expect them. While we often prepare emergency plans for ourselves and our families, pets are often an afterthought. They shouldn’t be. Our animals depend on us, especially in a crisis.
With June recognized as National Pet Preparedness Month, it’s a great reminder to make sure our pets are ready for the unexpected, too. Emergencies don’t wait, so thinking ahead now may save your pet’s life.
Build a Pet Emergency Kit
Just like humans need emergency supplies, so do pets. Ideally, assemble two kits: a larger one for sheltering at home and a smaller version that’s easy to grab if you have to leave in a hurry.
Your pet’s kit should include:
• Several days’ supply of food and water (3-7 days) along with bowls

Store everything in a waterproof container, and update it for freshness regularly.
Be Ready to Evacuate
If you have to evacuate home quickly, never leave pets behind. Know where pet-friendly hotels or shelters are in your area (www. GoPetFriendly.com). If you’re not home, know who could help evacuate your pets. Buddy up with neighbors, friends, or relatives who might step in if you’re unable to make it home.
areas, place treats or toys inside, and let them explore and get used to it on their own. Also, know where your pet tends to hide during storms or loud noises. In an emergency, you won’t want to waste time searching.
Stay Alert and Be Ready
• Medications and basic first aid supplies
• A travel crate or carrier
• A sturdy leash, harness, and collar with ID
• Copies of vaccination records and vet information
• Waste bags, litter, and cleaning supplies

Use emergency alert apps, like the one from FEMA, to stay informed about local hazards. Pay attention to and follow evacuation orders and weather updates. And bring your pets inside at the first sign of danger.

• Comfort items like toys, treats, or bedding

Make sure your pet’s ID tags and microchip information are current and include an emergency contact who lives out of town. Keep a current selfie with your pet to prove ownership if you get separated.
If you need to evacuate quickly, your pet must be easy to find and ready to travel. Reduce stress by getting them comfortable with their carrier in advance - leave it out in familiar

No one wants to think about disasters, but preparing now means less worry later. Take an hour this June to check your pet emergency supplies, review your plan, and make sure your pets are protected—just like the rest of your family.

Directions:
Step 1:
Wash the pistachio shells with warm, soapy water. Rinse and dry them completely.
Step 2:
Cut the bamboo skewers into different lengths to create flower stems of various heights.
Step 3:
☐ Clean, dry pistachio shells
☐ Hot glue gun and glue sticks
☐ Bamboo skewers (for stems)
☐ Paint (any color)
☐ Paintbrush Materials:
This activity is brought to you by Mora Soan, author of the children’s book, Jacob in Japan! Jacob is a gnome who lives in New York. He owns a beautiful garden on the rooftop of a skyscraper. He is a picky eater and he only eats ordinary bland food. One windy night, Jacob falls into a magic flower pot. He wakes up in Japan. What will he do next? Will Jacob starve himself or will he find a way to enjoy and experience Japan? With an open mind, he may discover new and delicious foods that he never knew existed. Jacob in Korea is now available on Amazon.
To purchase a book, visit your local Barnes and Noble and follow Jacob’s story on Instagram @jacob_the_gnome.

Take one pistachio shell and place a good amount of hot glue inside it. Attach the top of a skewer into the glue inside the shell. Quickly press a second pistachio shell on the opposite side of the skewer, sandwiching the skewer between the two shells to form a flower bud.

Step 4:
Once the bud is secure at the top of the skewer, begin gluing more pistachio shells around the bud. Hold the skewer upright and continue adding shells around it in a circular pattern, forming petals. Keep layering shells until your flower reaches the size you want.

Step 5:
Once all the glue is dry, paint the flowers in any colors you like!
Let the paint dry completely before handling.
Place your finished flowers in a vase or jar, and surprise a loved one with a beautiful handmade bouquet!

NOW LIVE! FXBG NEIGHBORS PODCAST
BY DORI STEWART
Over the past several months, I’ve been working on an exciting new project to help bring our community even closer together.
I’m thrilled to introduce Fredericksburg’s newest locals-only podcast: the FXBG Neighbors Podcast!
My goal is simple—to give small business owners in the Stafford and Fredericksburg area a platform to share their stories and connect with their FXBG neighbors in a real and meaningful way. Through these conversations, we’re learning more about the people behind the businesses we know and love.
Each episode is short, fun, informative—and often inspirational. We talk about the challenges our guests have faced and how they’ve overcome them. What else are we asking on FXBG Neighbors? What do these business owners do for fun, and what are their favorite things about Fredericksburg?
The podcast is now live on over 15 platforms, and we’ve launched a website that highlights all of our featured guests, with plenty more to come. You can also find us on Facebook and Instagram @FXBGneighbors, so be sure to give us a follow and stay connected!
We’re adding new episodes several times a week, featuring many familiar faces from around the community. If you’re a business owner in the area, I’d love to share your story. Nominations are always welcome—just head to FXBGNeighborsPodcast.com to nominate your favorite local business.
