HEAVEN’S BEST CARPET & UPHOLSTERY CLEANING:
By Mallory Hardgrove
With over two decades of experience in the cleaning industry, Ryan Seidman, owner of Heaven’s Best Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning of Stafford, brings more than just a spotless carpet to the table. With a focus on professionalism, employee well-being, and community engagement, this local business offers something truly refreshing—a commitment to integrity and personalized service.

“I’ve been working in the cleaning business for 25 years,” Ryan shared. “Initially, I started my service business because I saw a real gap in the needs of commercial businesses.” That keen observation led to a successful journey in commercial cleaning, which eventually evolved into a more personalized service for homeowners.
“My commercial cleaning experience has allowed me to offer a unique and valuable solution to the individual needs of a homeowner.”
That client-first mindset is evident in the company’s philosophy: to provide top-tier service while fostering a strong team culture and embracing sustainable practices.
“We collaborate with our clients in meeting their needs,” Ryan explained, adding that personal and professional integrity is the bedrock of every job.
One of the standout features of Heaven’s Best is its commitment to innovation. Offering both low-moisture and hot-water extraction
methods, their services are performed by trained and educated technicians.
“We have a 30-day no-spot return guarantee,” Ryan said, ensuring customer satisfaction beyond the final vacuum stroke. This dedication to customer satisfaction is a testament to their commitment to providing the best service possible, leaving clients reassured and confident in the work completed. The business also proudly continues a legacy of veteran support, established by the previous owner, a decorated military veteran. “We continue to support our veterans just as he would,” Ryan summarized.
Beyond the tools and techniques, this is a business shaped by personal values.
“My biggest inspiration in life that transcends my work with Heaven’s Best Carpet Cleaning is my dad,” Ryan said. “He never wavered from standards of ethics, empathy, and fairness.”
Those same principles guide each service call and business decision.
Ryan’s personal story is just as inspiring. Born eight weeks premature and overcoming early health challenges, he credits his success to the support of family, loyal friends, and his faithful companion, an Australian Shepherd. “Through strength and determination and the remarkable support of my parents, I survived— and later reached maturity, confident and ready to take on any other challenges life offered.”
As for the community, the message is clear: “Please know that I have an ongoing commitment through Heaven’s Best Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning to be a contributing member by sharing my time and energy.”

With heart, experience, and a passion for service, Heaven’s Best isn’t just a name—it’s a promise.

Beauty, Business, and Motherhood: THE BALANCING ACT OF KAT HALSTEAD
By
Mallory Hardgrove

In the bustling community of Stafford, Virginia, one local business owner has been quietly hustling, building her beauty empire while raising her daughter as a single mother. Kathryn “Kat” Halstead, owner of Kat’s Beauty Lounge and Chatham Heights Beauty Co., has not just transformed personal challenges into professional triumphs, but has also shown remarkable resilience in the face of adversity, creating a stable, loving home for her 11-year-old daughter, Leela.
Finding Her Footing
Kat’s journey in Stafford began in 2014 during a pivotal moment. “We moved to Stafford after my daughter’s father and I separated,” she explains. “My parents lived in Stafford, and it seemed like a good place to start over as we needed support from family while going through the divorce process.”
What started as a fresh beginning has evolved into a deeply rooted life and thriving business. With almost two decades of experience in the beauty industry, Kat has not only established herself as a respected professional in the community but also as a mentor to other young women in her industry, inspiring them to achieve their own professional triumphs.
“I have been a licensed Cosmetologist since 2007,” Kat shares, tracing her professional journey. Her career grew steadily over the years, gaining momentum as she expanded her expertise, adding “Keune Hair Cosmetics Educator” (2018) and “Owner of Kat’s Beauty Lounge” (2019) to her list of professional accomplishments.
Her hard work has not gone unnoticed, as Kat lauds “Winner of ‘Best of the Burg’” in 2023 and 2024 and “Winner of ‘Hall of Fame’ for winning ‘Best of the Burg’ for two consecutive years,” she adds. Most recently, she expanded her business ventures by becoming the owner of Chatham Heights Beauty Co. in 2024.
A Mother’s Dedication
At the heart of Kat’s bustling life is her role as a mother to Leela. Despite the demands of entrepreneurship, Kat ensures her daughter’s childhood is rich with experiences and opportunities.
“Leela loves dance, theater, Webtoon, and theme parks,” Kat shares. The motherdaughter duo makes the most of their time together, with Leela enjoying her
annual pass to Kings Dominion during the summer months.
Their home life in Stafford provides the stability and community connection that Kat sought when relocating.
“It’s been nice to raise my daughter in a quiet, family-friendly area,” she reflects, appreciating the balance between smalltown comfort and accessibility to larger metropolitan areas.
The Art of Balance
When asked about her hobbies and interests, Kat’s answer reveals how thoroughly intertwined her roles as a mother and entrepreneur have become.
“I truly enjoy being a mom and a business owner, so most of my free time is just spent trying to ‘protect my investment,’ like doing things around the business and at home to keep things clean and pretty for everyone involved,” she explains.
However, this dedication to maintaining both home and business doesn’t mean all work and no play. “I also like to try new experiences, places to eat, or get away when I can, so light travel or events are my favorite way to ‘relax,’” she adds.
This preference for flexibility and spontaneity extends to lifestyle choices. “No pets because we like to be able to plan lastminute trips if we can, and it’s easier to do that when we don’t have pets at home,” Kat explains, though she admits, “but we would really love to have a dog one day.”
Community Connections
The Halsteads have created their own version of community engagement, finding joy in local establishments and activities. “We tend to enjoy the pool and other amenities in our community. We also enjoy walks and dinner in downtown Fredericksburg,” Kat shares.
Like many locals, she has her favorite spots. “Some of our favorite places are Benny’s, Mason Dixon, Castiglia’s, Casey’s, and Fahrenheit 132,” she lists, showcasing the diverse culinary options in the area. With a hint of personal flair, she adds, “I’ve gotten a lot of tattoos from Jack Brown’s Tattoo Revival, and if the season calls for it, I treat myself to Carl’s after.”
Family remains a priority in their travel plans. “We try to visit my family at either of their homes usually, either in WA or

FL,” Kat explains. Her career has also opened doors to exciting destinations. “Sometimes work will call me to get to travel to fun places like Las Vegas and Kansas City,” she adds-just one example of some added perks to her professional accomplishments.
A Growing Legacy
Kat’s impact extends beyond her businesses. She has created opportunities for other entrepreneurs in the industry, including “another mom colleague/salon owner who rents from me in South Stafford,” referring to Abby at Nice Hair.
This mentorship and support of fellow business owners—particularly women and mothers— speaks to Kat’s understanding of the challenges those balancing professional ambitions with parenting responsibilities face.
As Kat’s Beauty Lounge and Chatham Heights Beauty Co. continue to thrive, Kathryn Halstead stands as an example of resilience, determination, and community support. From seeking family assistance during a difficult transition to building award-winning businesses and creating a stable home for her daughter, Kat’s journey embodies the spirit of transformation that resonates with many in the Stafford community.

In the beauty industry, where appearance is often the focus, Kat Halstead has shown that true beauty lies in building a life of purpose, creating opportunities for others, and nurturing the next generation—all while making sure everyone looks and feels their best along the way.

Grant offers practical advice for those seeking insurance guidance: “Make sure that you and your family are protected. Always ask questions if you do not understand. It’s always good to have a local agent where you can sit down, talk with them, and build lasting relationships.”

Is your carpet only a few years old and void of stains, but beginning to loosen and wrinkle? Is the only hope of restoring a new look by purchasing a brand-new carpet? The answer is maybe not. An alternative is called carpet stretching.
Carpet stretching is a process used to restore the appearance and functionality of carpets that have become loose, wrinkled, or stretched out over time. It involves pulling the carpet back into place to remove any sagging or bunching, helping to create a smooth, flat surface. Our installation team at NK Floors uses specialized equipment to ensure the carpet is stretched evenly without causing damage.

WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK NK FLOORS FOR BRINGING YOU

Reasons for Carpet Stretching
Carpets can become loose and rippled due to poor installation, changes in humidity, and foot traffic. Stretching the carpet smooths out bumps and irregularities. Newly installed carpets may need stretching after a few months of settling if they weren’t stretched tightly enough initially. Carpets that are several years old can lose their tightness and start to sag. If the carpet is still in good condition, stretching can be more cost-effective than replacing it. When furniture has been rearranged or certain environmental factors have affected the carpet, it may shift and require stretching to return to its original position.
Stretching your carpet can help prevent further damage, such as tearing or fraying at the edges and matting, and it also helps maintain the carpet’s overall structural integrity. Several factors must be considered when deciding whether to stretch or replace the carpet in your home, particularly if the carpet is too old, worn out, severely damaged, or has deep stains.
The Restretching Process

Optimal results are achieved through skill and the right equipment. The NK Floors installation team will look for signs of wear, damage, or any underlying issues with the subfloor that could impact the stretching process and will ensure the carpet is not too old or damaged to stretch.
The furniture is removed, and the carpet is lifted from its edges. The integrity of the baseboard and tack strip is checked and replaced if necessary. The installation team will stretch the carpet from one end to another using a specialized power stretcher, pulling the rug taut and flattening the entire surface. The power stretcher’s tension ensures
consistent carpet pulling, preventing wrinkles and sagging. In smaller areas, a carpet kicker is used. Once the carpet has been stretched into position, it is reattached to the tack strips along the room’s perimeter. Any excess carpet will be trimmed and secured, ensuring everything is firmly in place.
Carpet stretching cost-effectively enhances the appearance and longevity of your carpet. Consult with professionals like NK Floors to assess the condition of your carpet and ensure that stretching is the best solution for your home.

SWING THE BAT.
IT’S NOT TOO LATE.
By Cherice Taylor

Cherice Taylor, M.A. in Education Administration and Center Director at Sylvan Learning, is an experienced educator and community leader. She is a Charter member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Psi Psi Omega Chapter. With a strong commitment to service and community improvement, she is a military spouse, a poet, mother of four, and advocates the philosophy of “Service to All Mankind.”
School’s out, the final bell has rung, and the lazy days of summer have officially arrived. But as you glance around at your kids, a familiar thought might creep in: are they truly destined for a summer of endless lounging and inactivity? As you navigate your own daily routine of work and household responsibilities, the contrast can be stark. A casual “What have you been up to today?” might be met with a nonchalant “Just relaxing” or “Nothing much yet.”
We all understand the need for a break, a chance to exhale after a potentially challenging school year. Rest is essential, a well-deserved reward for their hard work. Yet, life continues its relentless rhythm, doesn’t it? How do we strike that delicate balance between providing our students with the downtime they need and equipping them for the ever-evolving landscape that awaits them after high school?
The answer, in short, is action. They need to step up to the plate and swing the bat. It doesn’t necessarily mean hitting a grand slam every time, but it absolutely means engaging with the world around them in a productive way. Whether it’s earning some income for future goals like a car or further education, increasing their savings, or simply making constructive use of their time, the key is involvement.
Here are a few tips and recommendations to encourage your students to step off the sidelines and into the game:
• Apply for a job: The traditional summer job offers invaluable experience in responsibility, time management, and the fundamentals of earning a living.

• Volunteer: There are opportunities at local libraries, school summer programs, or community camps. Volunteering allows them to contribute to their community, explore potential interests, and develop valuable skills.
• Seek micro-internships or shadowing opportunities: Encourage them to reach out to friends or family who own businesses and inquire about short-term volunteer roles. Even an hour a day or a week can provide exposure to different industries and work environments.
• Take a summer course: Many high schools and community colleges offer accelerated summer courses, allowing students to get ahead academically or explore new subjects.
• Offer pet-sitting or house-sitting services: This fosters responsibility and provides a way to earn some money while helping others.
• Explore neighborhood odd jobs: Simple tasks like offering to help neighbors with yard work, such as cutting grass, can be a great way to earn money and contribute to the community.
The list is endless, but the underlying principle remains: engaging in meaningful activities during the summer is crucial. It’s about more than just filling time; it’s about building character, instilling a sense of responsibility, understanding timelines, cultivating professionalism, and developing those essential soft skills that are increasingly vital in the workforce.
Speaking from experience as a parent of four sons, we embraced many of these opportunities. Some experiences they enjoyed, others not so much, but each one contributed to their growth and development. As summer unfolds quickly, I encourage you to help your students find their own way to swing the bat. The opportunities are there; it’s about taking the initiative to seize them before the season slips away.

WYATT’S CLOSET: SERVING LOCAL FAMILIES WITH COMPASSION & DIGNITY
By
In the heart of Spotsylvania County, a compassionate organization is quietly making a profound difference in the lives of local families. Wyatt’s Closet, which started as a small outreach program in 2022, has blossomed into a vital support system for community members facing unexpected challenges. Its growth from one initiative to a significant community resource is a testament to the power of community and compassion, inspiring all who hear its story.
“What started as a small outreach to one Spotsylvania County school has grown into a remarkable support system for many in the community, especially during unexpected times of hardship,” founder, Ashley Woodcock, explains. Her journey began after witnessing the silent struggles of families lacking access to basic essentials.

The organization’s mission goes far beyond simple charity. “Our philosophy is rooted in compassion, responsiveness, and dignity,” Woodcock emphasizes.
We believe no one should feel ashamed to ask for help, and we are committed to meeting needs quickly and discreetly.
Wyatt’s Closet provides a wide range of support, from school supplies and personal care items to emergency assistance during crises like house fires and flooding. This includes backpacks filled with school supplies, hygiene kits, and immediate financial aid for families affected by disasters.
What truly sets Wyatt’s Closet apart is its commitment to preserving the dignity of those it serves. The organization works tirelessly to ensure families receive support without judgment or embarrassment.
“Whether a family is facing financial hardship or recovering from a disaster, we aim to be a trusted and nonjudgmental source of support,” Woodcock shares, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to providing assistance without stigma or shame.

The holiday assistance program holds a special place in Woodcock’s heart.
“The amount of smiles, hugs, and even tears that are shared during those moments has left a lasting impression on me and our team,” she reflects. “It’s a powerful reminder that what we do goes beyond giving— it’s about connection, dignity, and love.”
Currently serving hundreds of families across the region, Wyatt’s Closet collaborates with local schools, emergency shelters, and community nonprofits. The organization’s reach continues to expand, driven by Woodcock’s unwavering inspiration.
“My biggest inspiration is the strength and resilience of the families we serve,” she says. “Seeing a parent or child smile after seeing something they need makes it all worth it.”
Woodcock extends a heartfelt invitation to the community: “We are always looking for volunteers, donors, and partners to help us expand our reach. Whether you want to contribute time, items, or help spread the word, we welcome you to join our mission.”

DISASTER DOESN’T WAIT— HAVE A PLAN FOR YOUR PETS
By Dr. Katrina Spies, DVM, CHPV, CCRV, CVA, CVPP

Storms, fires, floods, even power outages can happen when we least expect them. While we often prepare emergency plans for ourselves and our families, pets are often an afterthought. They shouldn’t be. Our animals depend on us, especially in a crisis.
With June recognized as National Pet Preparedness Month, it’s a great reminder to make sure our pets are ready for the unexpected, too. Emergencies don’t wait, so thinking ahead now may save your pet’s life.
Build a Pet Emergency Kit
Just like humans need emergency supplies, so do pets. Ideally, assemble two kits: a larger one for sheltering at home and a smaller version that’s easy to grab if you have to leave in a hurry.
Your pet’s kit should include:
• Several days’ supply of food and water (3-7 days) along with bowls
• Medications and basic first aid supplies
• A sturdy leash, harness, and collar with ID
• A travel crate or carrier
• Copies of vaccination records and vet information
• Waste bags, litter, and cleaning supplies
• Comfort items like toys, treats, or bedding
Store everything in a waterproof container, and update it for freshness regularly.
Be Ready to Evacuate
If you have to evacuate home quickly, never leave pets behind. Know where pet-friendly hotels or shelters are in your area (www. GoPetFriendly.com). If you’re not home, know

who could help evacuate your pets. Buddy up with neighbors, friends, or relatives who might step in if you’re unable to make it home.
Make sure your pet’s ID tags and microchip information are current and include an emergency contact who lives out of town. Keep a current selfie with your pet to prove ownership if you get separated.

make sure your pets are protected—just like the rest of your family.

Stay Alert and Be Ready

If you need to evacuate quickly, your pet must be easy to find and ready to travel. Reduce stress by getting them comfortable with their carrier in advance - leave it out in familiar areas, place treats or toys inside, and let them explore and get used to it on their own. Also, know where your pet tends to hide during storms or loud noises. In an emergency, you won’t want to waste time searching.

Use emergency alert apps, like the one from FEMA, to stay informed about local hazards. Pay attention to and follow evacuation orders and weather updates. And bring your pets inside at the first sign of danger.

No one wants to think about disasters, but preparing now means less worry later. Take an hour this June to check your pet emergency supplies, review your plan, and

Take one pistachio shell and place a good amount of hot glue inside it. Attach the top of a skewer into the glue inside the shell. Quickly press a second pistachio shell on the opposite side of the skewer, sandwiching the skewer between the two shells to form a flower bud.

Step 4:
Once the bud is secure at the top of the skewer, begin gluing more pistachio shells around the bud. Hold the skewer upright and continue adding shells around it in a circular pattern, forming petals. Keep layering shells until your flower reaches the size you want.

Step 5:
Once all the glue is dry, paint the flowers in any colors you like!
Let the paint dry completely before handling.
Place your finished flowers in a vase or jar, and surprise a loved one with a beautiful handmade bouquet!
