BUILDING DREAMS: JULIE BIRT BRINGS PERSONAL TOUCH TO MORTGAGE SERVICES
By Mallory Hardgrove, Photos Courtesy of Julie Birt

After a distinguished 34-year career in government, Julie Birt has embarked on a new chapter that combines her passion for housing with her commitment to helping others achieve the American Dream. As a licensed mortgage professional with Mortgage Network Solutions, LLC., Ms. Birt brings a unique perspective to the lending industry, one shaped by personal experience and a genuine commitment to client service.
Ms. Birt received her Nationwide Multi-State System Licensing number in late January, marking her official entry into the mortgage business. Her transition wasn’t accidental: “I retired after a 34-year career in government and realized I like working in budgets and in the housing market ,” she explains. Her background includes personal real estate investments and a fix-and-flip project, experiences that give her valuable insight into her clients’ perspectives.
“I am a HGTV fanatic and really enjoy the renovation shows,” Birt shares, revealing the enthusiasm that drives her work. “The creativity of the designers and the homeowner’s reaction to their refreshed home never gets old.” This passion for real estate transformation extends naturally to helping clients navigate one of life’s most significant purchases.
Mortgage Network Solutions operates as a licensed mortgage broker across 14 states, with a strong presence on the East Coast and additional coverage in Tennessee, Michigan, Louisiana, and Arizona. Ms. Birt’s approach stands apart in an industry often criticized for impersonal service.
“My philosophy is to give as much time to the client as they need,” she states. “I am not working this job to process a lot of loans at a time, causing a client to not get what they need. I am building my brand on being there for the client.”
Her commitment to personalized service reflects a deeper understanding of what homebuying means to families. “My goal is consistent communications in order to clarify what concerns the client may have for what is likely to be one of their biggest investments,” Ms. Birt emphasizes. She prioritizes face-to-face meetings whenever possible and maintains responsive communication throughout the 30- to 60-day loan process.
Community engagement remains central to Ms. Birt’s approach. She’s finalizing her “Homebuyer’s 101” educational session at the Fredericksburg library, tentatively planned for late July or August. “I am here for you,” she tells potential clients. “If you are just planning and want to review interest rates and get an idea of the house you can afford, reach out for a no obligation estimate.”
Beyond mortgage services, Ms. Birt actively contributes to her Fredericksburg community through the local Tree Stewards program and Fredericksburg Food Bank. Her community involvement reflects a lifelong commitment to service, having previously worked with orphanages overseas and supported local communities throughout her career.

For Ms. Birt, inspiration comes from resilience: “I am inspired in life by those people who can get through tough times and come through it, thriving.” This philosophy guides her work, helping clients overcome financial challenges to achieve homeownership dreams. If you’re ready to make your American Dream a reality, call Julie Birt at 826-246-9436 or at jbirt@mortgagens.com.

DAY: 9 August
PLACE: Fredericksburg Library in ROOM 2
TIME: 10:00-11:00
Coffee and Donuts....and homework ☺
“This is an informational session for those wanting to know about getting a mortgage and how to think about your budget with a mortgage.”

When making your decision, let us provide home mortgage options for the best new home loan, home equity loan, or refinance. We work with a network of lenders to give you the best choices! We’ll do the homework for you to help you watch the current interest rates!

Finding Home in Stafford:
Finding Home in Stafford:
PATRICIA GRANT’S JOURNEY
PATRICIA GRANT’S JOURNEY
FROM CITY LIFE TO COMMUNITY CONNECTION
FROM CITY LIFE TO COMMUNITY CONNECTION
By Mallory Hardgrove
Patricia Grant’s love for Stafford County is a testament to the unexpected beauty that life can offer. Twenty years ago, she was set on Woodbridge, ready to leave Dumfries for what she thought was her dream location. But life had a different plan, and Stafford County became her unexpected love.
“My goal was to reside in Woodbridge from Dumfries,” Grant said. “A realtor convinced me to come to Stafford as they were building new townhomes. I was against it, but once I came, I found that it was the best decision. It reminded me of home, nature, trees, and the feel of serenity when I arrived home from the hustle and bustle.”
That sense of serenity has become the cornerstone of Grant’s life in Stafford, where she has built not just a home but a thriving business and a close-knit family life with her husband, Jeffrey, and their extended family. Jeffrey shares Patricia’s appreciation for their chosen community, and together, they’ve created a life that balances professional success with personal fulfillment.
A Love Story That Started with Karaoke
The Grants’ love story began most unexpectedly – at a karaoke event where they were both supporting a mutual friend. Patricia was line dancing when she noticed Jeffrey on the sidelines, seemingly entranced by her moves. It was a moment of unexpected romance and spontaneity that changed their lives forever.
“I remember Jeffrey watching me on the sidelines while line dancing – he was shifting his feet to follow the steps of the dance,” Patricia recalled.
“I left karaoke early and noticed that he was reviewing the music in the karaoke book when I let him know the rule of karaoke: ‘If you touch the book, you have to sing.’ He immediately threw the book down,” Patricia laughed. “We both laughed, and his smile caught my attention.”
That spontaneous moment of humor broke the ice, but it was their first phone conversation that truly sealed their con-

nection. “Our first phone conversation lasted four hours. Our first date was a dinner date, and the rest is history,” Patricia said.
Building Success Through Dedication
Both Patricia and Jeffrey have built impressive careers through dedication and hard work. Patricia brings over three decades of experience in the property and casualty insurance industry, working with both carriers and agencies before becoming an agency owner herself.
Jeffrey’s background spans law enforcement and security work with the federal government, and he previously owned a successful trucking company.
Education has always been a priority in the Grant household. “My entire family graduated high school and has some college education,” Patricia proudly noted. This commitment to learning and growth extends to her two adult sons, Vincent and Matthew who have both carved out successful career paths as well as her “bonus daughter,” Mia, and daughter-in-law, Rochelle.
Vincent has spent over nine years in the dental industry, while Matthew has gained experience across various positions, including work in the insurance sector. But perhaps most interesting is their shared involvement in the growing world of esports gaming. Vincent serves as Director of Ultimate End Gamers League (UEL)

Gaming Esports, while Matthew works as a Player and Coach Team Lead for the same organization, representing a new generation’s approach to competitive gaming and digital entertainment.
While Patricia takes pride in her sons’ achievements, it’s clear that her three grandchildren hold a special place in her heart. “I also have three loving grandchildren who have my heart,” she said of Akira (16), Anthony (13), and Violette (6). The age range of the grandchildren means Patricia gets to experience different stages of childhood development, from teenage independence to the wonder of a kindergartener.
Community Connection and Personal Passions
What truly sets Patricia apart is her deep commitment to community involvement and her diverse range of personal interests. Her hobbies reflect both the creative and social sides of her personality – she enjoys karaoke (a fitting passion given how
she met her husband), reading, drawing, and thrifting.
“I get involved in the neighborhood activities, such as the community yard sales. It’s always fun to connect with neighbors on a common level – we are all trying to get rid of our stuff!” she laughs. “Also, to give back to the community and make new friends.”
Beyond neighborhood activities, Patricia is actively involved in community event planning and volunteering. She often helps organize local fairs, charity events, and school functions, demonstrating her belief that strong communities are built through active participation rather than passive observation.
The Appeal of Stafford Living
When asked what she enjoys most about living in Stafford, Patricia’s answer reveals her deep connection to the area’s natural beauty and community spirit: “The feel of back home in New Kent – off-road living,

nature, living in a community that cares and comes out to support the local events, like Stafford’s Night Out.”
This appreciation for community events and local support speaks to Patricia’s values and her understanding of what makes a place truly feel like home. She particularly loves the parks in Stafford and appreciates the variety of restaurants the area offers, though she admits there are “too many to name.”
Simple Pleasures and Future Dreams
Despite her professional success and community involvement, Patricia finds joy in life’s simple pleasures. Her vacation preferences are straightforward: “I am a simple person. I enjoy going to the beach for vacation to soak up the sun and run my feet through the sand.”
This preference for simplicity seems to reflect Patricia’s overall approach to life – finding joy in genuine connections, whether it’s a four-hour phone conversation with her future husband,

Patricia Grant, Agency Owner pgrant1@farmersagent.com www.farmersagent.com/pgrant1
connecting with neighbors over yard sales, or simply enjoying the natural beauty that drew her to Stafford in the first place.
Patricia Grant’s story is one of unexpected discoveries and intentional choices. From initially resisting the move to Stafford to becoming deeply rooted in its community, from a chance encounter at karaoke to a lasting marriage, from building a successful career to nurturing the next generation, her journey illustrates how the best chapters of our lives often begin when we’re open to possibilities we hadn’t initially considered.
Today, as she continues to grow her insurance agency and remain active in community events, Patricia Grant embodies the kind of engaged, committed resident that makes small communities, like ours, thrive. Her story reminds us that home isn’t just about location – it’s about the connections we build and the communities we choose to support.

K-12: THE LAUNCH TO INDEPENDENCE IS THE GOAL
By Cherice Taylor

Psi Psi Omega Chapter. With a strong commitment to service and community improvement, she is a military spouse, a poet, mother of four, and advocates the philosophy of “Service to All Mankind.”
It’s already July, and many of us are wondering why summer seems to be flying by. When I look at my own children, it feels like just yesterday they were toddlers. Now they are grown men, and my husband and I are incredibly proud of the young adults they’ve become.
At the same time, we are amazed at how quickly 20-plus years have passed. They are mostly independent, and that’s exactly the goal, isn’t it? Yes, it is!
Helping our children successfully launch into independence is paramount, and it shouldn’t be an easy journey. I often remind my sons that there isn’t a single parenting handbook that guarantees success. We do our best, striving to get it right more often than not. With the new school year — and future school years — on the horizon, I wanted
to share some valuable resources for parents to explore or perhaps even while enjoying a vacation.
Resources:
• The Virginia Department of Education website: https://www.doe.virginia.gov/parents- students/parent-resources/ news-updates
• The National PTA: https://www.pta.org/

These resources offer excellent information tailored for all families, including our military families.

BUILDING BRIGHTER FUTURES: STAFFORD EDUCATION FOUNDATION’S MISSION TO TRANSFORM LOCAL EDUCATION
By Mallory Hardgrove, Photos Courtesy of SEF, LEAPS, SCPS, & 2024 ITG Recipients

For nearly two decades, the Stafford Education Foundation (SEF) has stood as a beacon of support for the county’s vast educational community, bridging gaps and creating opportunities where they might not otherwise exist. What began as a vision to empower students has evolved into a comprehensive support system that touches every corner of Stafford County’s schools.
“Empowering the future of our students was at the core of the establishment of Stafford Education Foundation nearly 20 years ago and remains steadfastly so today,” explains board member Shaina Amaya. With Stafford County serving a diverse student body of over 32,000 students and 4,000 educators and staff, the resource demands continue to grow—and SEF has risen to meet that challenge.
Three Pillars of Impact
The foundation operates on three fundamental pillars: Focus on Students, Focus on Educators, and Focus on Programs. Each pillar addresses specific needs within the educational community, creating a compre-

hensive approach to support these needs. SEF’s mission centers on engaging the community to make a lasting impact on quality education by bridging the gap between opportunities and access, enabling students to reach their full potential, and providing educators with the necessary resources.
Leading this charge is a dedicated board of directors: President Anita Uyehara, Treasurer Jessica Marschall, and Secretary Debbie Sechrist. Each board member brings years of experience (all have served for at least five years or more) and represents diverse backgrounds spanning parents, educators, business owners, and community servants.
“Our Board Members come from diverse backgrounds; each has a unique perspective and set of strengths they bring to the table,” notes Stephanie Johnson, Interim Executive Director, a lifelong educational advocate and former Aquia School Board member. “They represent all areas of our community, but one tie binds us all together: a passion to fill unmet needs in our schools for both teachers and students.”
“The Stafford Education Foundation provides an important tie between our classrooms and our community,” said Dr. Daniel W. Smith, Superintendent of Schools. “Through their fundraising efforts, the Foundation provides programs like the Innovative Teaching Grants, which allow our teachers to amplify what we can achieve in our classrooms, in turn strengthening our entire school division.”
Moments of Joy and Inspiration
For the board members, the most rewarding aspects of their work come in witnessing the direct impact of SEF’s initiatives. These moments of connection and transformation drive their continued dedication to the cause.
“The AHA moments of supporting Stafford County education!” exclaims President Anita Uyehara when asked what inspires her to give back. “When a high school senior aspir-
ing to become a teacher receives our notice of a scholarship, when a teacher bubbles with enthusiasm at receiving a grant to support classroom needs, when young elementary students beam with pride at showing the school’s mural they helped to paint with our grant funds– it’s all about creating AHA! Moments in our school system.”
For Secretary Debbie Sechrist, the inspiration comes from a deeply personal place. “My biggest inspiration is my kids and their peers. I believe we have some amazing kids in this community, who with the help of our amazing educators, are going to go forth and do big things in this world. It takes a village, and I am happy to help support our school system to empower these young minds. I believe in our mission and vision to help bridge the gap between available funding and the genuine needs of education endeavors.”
“That moment when you see what SEF does that truly matters comes during the virtual presentation of Future Educator Scholarships,” explains Treasurer Jessica Marschall. “When a student hears that they have been chosen as a recipient, the look on their face is priceless, in addition to their parent, grandparent, and sibling reactions. We invite the whole family to the virtual presentation. There is also a huge surprise (that I will not reveal here) that makes them even happier!”
The second source of joy stems from the foundation’s Innovative Teaching Grants program. “Getting after-action reports from teachers who have been recipients of our Innovative Teaching Grants provides tremendous satisfaction,” Marschall continues. “There are typically pictures, videos, and narratives that come to us. Seeing the true classroom impact is, well, joyful!”
Community Building and Long-Term Impact and Legacy
Stafford County’s unique geographic layout presents distinct challenges. “Our county is quite fragmented geographically, without a
© Best Version Media
lot of close neighborhood hubs, sidewalks, and shared local spaces,” notes President Anita Uyehara. This situation highlights the vital role of SEF’s unifying mission in uniting diverse communities around a shared commitment to education.
One of the most inspiring aspects of SEF’s work is witnessing the long-term impact of its investments in students. “One of the most inspiring things is to see one of our Future Educator Scholarship kids come back to teach at Stafford Schools,” shares Johnson . “Knowing that there was a true impact for this student and that they knew they could come home and give back to a community that truly supported them.”
The foundation also takes pride in supporting educators’ creative visions through its grant programs. “When we provide the grant to a teacher or group of teachers, they just have an idea– SEF provides the funding to see that come to fruition,”Johnson explains about attending the culmination of Innovative Teaching Grant projects in May.
Getting Involved and Supporting the Mission
For ongoing support, the foundation has launched the Building Brighter Futures
Fund, a monthly giving campaign that allows community members to make sustained contributions to educational excellence.
“Supporting unmet needs is an ongoing mission, as there are so many,” Shaina Amaya emphasizes. “To create a meaningful impact, we have one major fundraiser a year.”
SEF maintains its impact through strategic fundraising efforts, most notably its annual “Tee Off for Education” golf tournament. This year’s event will be held on Tuesday, September 23—deliberately scheduled on a day when teachers are off, allowing them to participate and enjoy the day.
The foundation actively encourages community engagement through various channels, including its bi-monthly newsletter and social media presence. This outreach is a vital part of SEF’s mission, fostering a sense of belonging and shared responsibility among community members.
As Sechrist emphasizes: “We need our community to sign up for our every other month newsletters to be in the know and engage with SEF.”
With its comprehensive approach to addressing unfunded mandates in education

and its proven track record of creating lasting change, the Stafford Education Foundation continues to demonstrate that when a community comes together around education, the impact extends far beyond individual students and teachers— it transforms the entire educational landscape for generations to come.

THE ART OF BACKSPLASH DESIGN
By Karie Owens • Photos Courtesy of NK Floors

Karie, a native of Pennsylvania, cherishes her roots in faith and family above all else. Together with her husband and their nine children, they have fearlessly embraced life’s adventures, including living in Africa and establishing a successful business. Beyond her roles as a dedicated wife and mother, Karie is a passionate educator, talented musician, and enthusiastic traveler. Her love for exploring new cultures and experiencing the world is matched only by her appreciation for a good cup of coffee.
The kitchen is the heart of the home. It is where we gather, eat, play, share life, and make memories. While functionality is the priority, aesthetics is just as important. A kitchen backsplash shields walls from moisture, grease, and food. Bold and bright backsplash designs are popular. However, the trend for 2025 is matching countertops and cabinets as well as neutral-toned backsplashes with colorful cabinetry. If you are upgrading your kitchen this year, you will need to know about the common materials, design styles, and finishes. Let’s walk through the first three big decisions.
Choose your material.
The material you choose for your backsplash will depend on your budget, style, and the need for durability. You can choose from ceramic or porcelain tile, glass, natural stone, engineered stone, stainless steel, wood, concrete, mirrored glass, or a marble slab. The most

common and economical materials include ceramic and porcelain tile. These materials resist water and stains, and require a sealed grout that can vary in color.
Glass tile gives a more modern look and reflects light. It is easy to clean but more costly than ceramic or porcelain. Natural stone backsplashes, including granite, marble, and slate, are exquisite and invite a piece of the earth into your kitchen. They offer luxury, but at a higher price, and sealing is necessary, as this material is more porous and needs more maintenance. Practical and industrial, stainless steel offers a modern look but easily shows fingerprints and dents. Concrete also boasts modern class, but is prone to cracks over time.
Manufactured slabs of engineered stone or quartz offer an alternative to natural stone with durability and low maintenance, no grout lines, and a seamless finish. You can choose wood or shiplap for a warm, rus-

tic look with texture. Sealing the wood surface is key when choosing this material due to moisture. Finally, if you want to expand the area visually, select a type of mirrored glass.
Select your design style, color, and finish. What statement do you want to make? Do you want a bold statement to stand out in your kitchen or something more classic and timeless?
A classic design would be ceramic subway tile, usually 3” x 6” laid out in a brick fashion. Subway tile has various colors, sheens (glossy to matte), and textures. If you enjoy extreme detail, mosaic tile would catch your eye.
Mosaics are small tiles arranged in patterns with tiles not exceeding two inches and are made of glass, ceramic, porcelain, stone, or metal, often mounted on a mesh or paper backing to make installation easier. If you like a geometric accent, herringbone would be a consideration for a classic or contemporary update. Herringbone tile resembles a fishbone design with rectangular tiles arranged in a staggered, zigzag pattern.
You could also go with a modern geometric design and incorporate repetition of shapes and patterns. Keep in mind some visual components for your design. Choosing lighter colors for the backsplash will make the room feel more spacious, whereas darker colors add more of a dramatic nuance. Glossy tiles are easier to clean, but a matte finish offers an essence of subtle sophistication.
Backsplash installation is an effective way to add beauty and protection to your home. Be sure to use a company that offers a wide range of tile options and professional installation services to ensure your backsplash is a masterpiece.

LOUD IMPACT FROM A QUIET SPACE
By Kira Pohwala

Kira Pohwala is a rising junior at Mountain View High School. She serves as an editor on the school’s literary magazine, Scene, and is a member of the National Honors Society, National English Honors Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and the Spanish Honors Society. She manages a digital youth literary and arts magazine (Ephemeral Gazette) and volunteers frequently at the library.
High school students’ presence is strongly felt in the Stafford community through their passionate volunteer work, yet it can be challenging to find events to participate in. However, regardless of circumstances, members can always rely on one place – the library.
Rising Mountain View junior Bailey Duncan said, “I’ve been volunteering since October, and it’s helped me connect and get to know a lot of people outside of my high school and neighborhood.” Rising MVHS senior Zaya Buyankhuu said, “The library helps the whole community – kids, teens, adults, even the elderly. It feels good helping such a broad group of people through a prominent local space. Our work helps people look forward to going to their library.”
Many of the library’s events take place once a month, offering consistent opportunities for volunteers to earn hours and for families to connect. A favorite among many volunteers is Fabulous Friday, a monthly event featuring themed games, obstacle courses, and crafts designed to teach children new content.
“These big events really expose me to new people, and I’ve enjoyed bonding with the little kids that come,” said Bailey.

“I loved working with the kids because they’re always so engaged and excited,” Zaya added. “It feels nice contributing to my community like this.”
The library hosts events for all ages, some of which were initiated by Mountain View students. Spanish with Amigos is a program started with members of the Spanish Honors Society. Anyone who speaks the language or hopes to learn Spanish can participate in games, read books, and dance to music. They play the traditional bingo-like game, lotería, along with classic board games with Spanish twists. The organizers are adaptable and prepared to set up a storytime for young children, conversation practice for Spanish learners, and more to ensure a fun and engaging experience.

prizes for bingo, and I think a lot of teens, especially Spanish learners, would have a fun time with their friends. It deserves a lot more recognition.”
“Learning another language is a valuable skill, and it helps Spanish students a lot,” said Bailey. “It also helps Spanish-speaking children meet new people. The program’s for everybody.”
“I helped set it up one time, and it looked so fun!” Zaya added. “They give out candy

PINUPS WITH PURPOSE: HOW DOWNTOWN DOLLS IS MAKING
FREDERICKSBURG
A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE
By Mallory Hardgrove, Photos by Karen Presecan Photography & Courtesy of Downtown Dolls
In the summer of 2019, Kitty Melerski had a vision that would transform both her own life and the fabric of the Fredericksburg community. What began as a simple desire to give back locally has blossomed into something extraordinary: a sisterhood of women who prove that vintage glamour and modern philanthropy make a powerful combination.
The Downtown Dolls, described as “Pinups with Purpose,” represent far more than their eye-catching vintage aesthetic might suggest. This modern pinup social club has become a driving force for positive change in Fredericksburg, channeling the confidence and fierce femininity of the pinup era into meaningful community service that touches lives throughout the region.
From Corporate Giving to Community Building Melerski’s journey to founding the Downtown Dolls began with her previous role as president of her company’s employee-funded nonprofit. While that experience was valuable, working
over an hour away from home made her realize something important about where her heart truly lies.
“I had previously served as the President of my company’s employee-funded nonprofit, but working over an hour away from home made me realize how much I wanted to make an impact locally,” Melerski explains. This realization sparked a desire to create something that would directly benefit the community where she lived and raised her family.
Her philosophy was simple but powerful: “I’ve always believed that ‘If you can and have, you should do and give.’” This belief, combined with her love for the pinup community and admiration for other groups that blended vintage style with meaningful philanthropy, led her to bring that same spirit to Fredericksburg.
The response was immediate and enthusiastic. “At our first meeting, six women showed up—each of them excited to do more than just dress up. They wanted to make a difference. And from that small gathering, we’ve grown

into a sisterhood of over 25 pinups with purpose,” Melerski recalls with pride.
A Philosophy Rooted in Empowerment
The Downtown Dolls operate under a philosophy that seamlessly weaves together style, service, and sisterhood. Their approach challenges the notion that community service must be somber or utilitarian, instead proving that joy and purpose can coexist beautifully.
“We believe in the power of community, compassion, and confidence,” Melerski explains. “At our core, we are women lifting up women— through service, sisterhood, and self-expression. We embrace the glamour of the pinup era not just for its fashion but for its fierce femininity and timeless confidence. But we don’t stop at the surface. We’re here to serve.”
This philosophy extends beyond mere charitable giving to encompass a holistic approach

to community engagement. The organization recognizes that supporting Fredericksburg means consistently showing up, whether through organized fundraising events, volunteer work, or simply being present when the community needs them most.
“Whether it’s supporting local charities, organizing drives, or showing up where we’re needed most, the Dolls live by the philosophy that if you have the heart and the means, you give back,” Melerski notes. “Every lash, red lip, and swing dress is backed by purpose—and our purpose is to leave Fredericksburg a little brighter than we found it.”
Measurable Impact Across Multiple Organizations
The Downtown Dolls’ impact on Fredericksburg extends far beyond what their relatively small membership might suggest. Rather than operating in isolation, they function as a multiplier for community good, raising funds that they then distribute to other local organizations while also providing hands-on volunteer support.
“The Downtown Dolls multiply every dollar donated to us and pass those funds on to other amazing local organizations. So far, we’ve raised over $47,000 for groups like the Fairy Godmother Project, Gwyneth’s Gift Foundation, Ellie’s Elves, The Lisa Pitts Eley Foundation, Empower House, and many more,” Melerski reports.
This impressive fundraising total represents just one dimension of their community impact. The organization also emphasizes direct service, with members rolling up their sleeves to support various causes throughout the year. “Our Dolls have delivered meals to homebound residents, packed supply boxes for the Blue Star Moms, and supported events at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore,” Melerski explains, highlighting the diversity of their volunteer efforts.
The scope of their involvement reflects a commitment to being responsive to community needs rather than limiting themselves to a single cause. “Over the years, we’ve jumped in wherever help is needed—whether it’s participating in charity walks, assisting with community events, or lending a hand at local drives,” she adds.
Inspiration Rooted in Legacy
For Melerski, the work of the Downtown Dolls is deeply personal, driven by her desire to model community engagement for the next generation. Her approach to leadership and service is fundamentally shaped by her role
as a mother and her vision of the legacy she wants to leave behind.
“My biggest inspiration in life is my children. Everything I do—especially when it comes to service—is rooted in the hope of leaving behind something they can be proud of,” she explains. “I want them to see that making a difference doesn’t always require a grand gesture; sometimes it starts with simply showing up, caring deeply, and giving back however you can.”
This perspective infuses the Downtown Dolls with a sense of purpose that extends beyond immediate charitable goals to encompass broader community building and mentorship. Melerski finds particular joy in witnessing transformation within the organization itself, watching new members discover their own capacity for leadership and service.
“What I enjoy most is watching that same spark light up in others. Whether it’s a new member finding her confidence or a local family receiving help when they need it most, I love knowing our work is creating ripples of kindness all around us,” she says.
Creating Connection Through Creative Events
The Downtown Dolls have mastered the art of making community engagement both meaningful and enjoyable, hosting creative events that draw broad participation while raising significant funds for local causes. Their upcoming calendar demonstrates their commitment to keeping community involvement fresh, fun, and accessible to everyone.
Their annual My Fair Lady Pinup Contest at the Fredericksburg Agricultural Fair exemplifies this approach, offering women a welcoming entry point into the pinup lifestyle while supporting the Bill Carroll Foundation. September brings the return of the popular “Beards in the Burg” contest in partnership with Shan Man’s Beard Wisdom, where participants can enter their beards or come vote to “save it or shave it” in what promises to be “a hilarious night” that raises money for the Downtown Dolls’ charitable work.
These events serve multiple purposes simultaneously: they raise funds for worthy causes, bring the community together in celebration, and demonstrate that charitable work doesn’t have to be serious to be impactful.
A Culture of Empowerment and Transformation
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the Downtown Dolls’ impact on Fredericksburg lies not just in their external charitable work but in their ability to transform the lives of their members, creating a ripple effect of empowerment that extends throughout the community.
captures something deeper about who we are. We show up, we support one another, and we serve our community with heart and humor.”
The transformative power of the organization became particularly evident during their recent Christmas party, where members shared personal stories about what the club had meant to them. “We are so thankful for Kitty’s vision and the effort put in by the founding members of our club. They created something special that has made a huge impact. So many of our ladies joined because they were looking for something more—more connection, more purpose, more joy. Through the Downtown Dolls, they didn’t just find a group of fun, loving, and accepting friends—they found strength in themselves they didn’t know was there,” current President, Heather Ablondi explains.
This emphasis on personal empowerment creates a powerful cycle: as individual members grow in confidence and purpose, they become more effective advocates and volunteers for the causes the organization supports, ultimately amplifying their positive impact on Fredericksburg.
Looking Forward: A Vision for Sustained Impact
As the Downtown Dolls continue to grow and evolve, Melerski’s vision extends beyond her leadership to encompass the long-term sustainability of the organization’s mission. Her perspective on leadership reflects a deep understanding that lasting community impact requires building systems and culture that can thrive regardless of any single individual’s involvement.
“The strength of an idea lies in its ability to live on in others. As the founder of the Downtown Dolls, that’s something I’ve seen firsthand— and it’s one of the things I’m most grateful for,” she reflects. “What started as a simple idea to blend vintage fun with community service has grown into something so much bigger, thanks to the incredible women who’ve caught the vision and stepped up as leaders.”
This approach to organizational development ensures that the Downtown Dolls’ positive impact on Fredericksburg will continue to grow and evolve, adapting to meet changing community needs while maintaining their core commitment to service, sisterhood, and style.

“One of our favorite sayings is, ‘A Doll’s gotta do what a Doll’s gotta do,’” Melerski shares. “It might sound playful—and it is—but it also
The Downtown Dolls prove that making a community better doesn’t require abandoning joy, creativity, or personal expression. Instead, they demonstrate that when passion meets purpose, the result can be both deeply meaningful and genuinely fun. Through their work, Fredericksburg has gained not just another charitable organization but a vibrant example of how community engagement can be both transformative and sustainable.
Their success in making Fredericksburg a better place to live lies not just in the funds they’ve raised or the volunteer hours they’ve contributed but in their ability to inspire others to discover their own capacity for service and community building. That may be their greatest gift to Fredericksburg of all.

BEAT THE HEAT: KEEP YOUR PET SAFE THIS SUMMER
By Dr. Katrina Spies, DVM, CHPV, CCRV, CVA, CVPP

As the temperature climbs, so does the risk of heatstroke for our pets. This life-threatening condition happens when a pet’s body overheats—typically above 105.8°F—and it can no longer cool itself effectively. Left untreated, heatstroke rapidly leads to severe organ damage and, tragically, can be fatal. The good news? It’s almost entirely preventable!
How Pets Cool Themselves—and Why It Can Fail
Unlike humans, dogs don’t sweat through their skin. They pant to cool off by evaporating moisture from their tongue and respiratory tract. But panting isn’t always enough— especially in humid weather or when pets are confined to hot spaces or overexert themselves. Heatstroke happens when heat gain exceeds the body’s ability to release it. Body temperature rises quickly, triggering cellular damage, inflammation, and potentially organ failure.
Common Causes of Heatstroke
• Parked cars are the #1 danger - even with windows cracked, temperatures rise to deadly levels within minutes.

• Poor ventilation in garages, sheds, and rooms with no airflow trap heat.
• Lack of shade or water, which pets need at all times.
• Exercise during hot or humid weather can overwhelm a pet’s ability to cool down.
Who’s Most at Risk?
Any pet can suffer from heatstroke, but some are more vulnerable:
• Brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds (Pugs, Bulldogs, Boxers, Shih Tzus, etc.) have shorter airways that make breathing and cooling more difficult.
• Overweight pets have insulating body fat that traps heat.
• Seniors and puppies regulate temperature less efficiently.
• Pets with heart, lung, or neurologic conditions are less able to cope with heat.
• Dark-coated pets absorb more solar radiation.
• Unacclimated pets need 6–8 weeks to adjust to warmer conditions gradually.
Warning Signs of Heatstroke
Early recognition is crucial. Watch for:
• Heavy or frantic panting
• Bright red gums or tongue
• Drooling or sticky saliva
• Weakness, collapse, or lethargy
• Disorientation or wobbly gait
• Vomiting or diarrhea (possibly with blood)
• Rectal temperature over 105°F (though this may decrease in late stages)
• Advanced signs include pale or bluish gums, seizures, bruising, coma, or sudden death.
What to Do if You Suspect Heatstroke
Act fast—this is a true emergency!
• Move to a cooler place with shade and air-conditioning.
• Begin cooling by applying cool water to the belly, neck, armpits, groin, and paws.

Will My Pet Recover?
Heatstroke is very serious. Mortality rates in dogs can reach 50–56%. Survival depends on how high the temperature climbed, how long the pet was overheated, how quickly cooling and veterinary treatment were started, and whether complications develop.
Prevention
Is the Best Medicine
• Never leave your pet in a vehicle.
• Walk during cooler times of day.
• Provide water and shade outdoors.
• Avoid hot pavement—if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paws.
• Let pets adjust gradually to warmer weather.
• Know your pet’s risks and act accordingly.
Final Thought
Heatstroke is a preventable tragedy. With awareness and quick action, you can keep your pet safe, cool, and comfortable all summer long. If you suspect your pet is in distress from the heat, don’t wait, act immediately. Their life depends on it.

• Use a fan to enhance evaporative cooling.

• Avoid wet towels—they trap heat.

• Offer water if your pet is conscious and hasn’t vomited (but don’t force them to drink).
• Call your vet immediately and prepare to transport. Continue cooling efforts en route.

Why Veterinary Care Is Critical

Even if your pet seems better, internal damage may continue. A veterinarian can:
• Monitor and regulate temperature
• Provide IV fluids
• Administer oxygen

• Run bloodwork to assess organ function and blood clotting
• Treat complications like kidney failure, brain swelling, or seizures
