RAY’S SIDING: 30 Years of Excellence in Home Transformation

For over 30 years, Ray’s Siding Company, LLC has been a trusted name in exterior remodeling in Fredericksburg, VA. Founded by Ray King and now helmed by his son, Michael King, and his wife, Chrissy, this family-owned business continues to uphold the values that have earned them a reputation for excellence: honesty, integrity, and a genuine commitment to customer care.

Specializing in siding, roofing, gutters, decks, windows, and doors, Ray’s Siding has evolved into a multi-service company, but its core philosophy remains unchanged. “We understand that choosing a remodeling company can be overwhelming, so we focus on listening to clients’ needs and treating their homes with the same care we would our own,” says Michael King, who took over the reins of the business when his father, Ray, passed away.

“We’re more than just a business,” says Chrissy King. “We’re a family, and we want our customers to feel like part of that family. We listen to their needs, avoid high-pressure sales tactics, and always focus on delivering lasting results.”

This customer-first approach, combined with the highest standards of craftsmanship– their certified team uses top-grade materials and the latest techniques, ensuring each home is “beautiful and durable”– sets Ray’s Siding apart from others.

“Our biggest inspiration is transforming homes,” says Michael. “It’s incredibly satisfying to take a dated home and breathe new life into it. We enjoy turning our clients’ visions into something tangible, something they can live in and love for years to come.” Whether it’s updating the siding on a family home or installing new energy-efficient windows, Ray’s Siding takes pride in the lasting impact their work has on the community. “We love knowing that our work makes a real difference in the lives of our neighbors,” says Chrissy. Mike and Chrissy King’s commitment to the community extends far beyond the homes they remodel. The couple is actively involved with the Fredericksburg Area Builders Association and proudly sponsors the Fredericksburg Nationals. Their dedication to giving back is reflected in their support for local charities like the SPCA, and they’re grateful to the Fredericksburg community for supporting their family business throughout the years. In their downtime, the Kings enjoy spending time with their sons and grandsons in the Northern Neck or catching a game at the Virginia Credit Union Baseball Stadium.

The team at Ray’s Siding embraces a lighthearted, family-oriented work environment. With a close-knit group of employees, the Kings create a space where everyone can joke with each other and celebrate milestone moments. “The familial essence among our employees is what makes work fun,” says Chrissy. “We’re like one big family, and that energy shines through in everything we do.”

At the heart of Ray’s Siding Company is a deep respect for the homes they work on and the clients they serve. “We don’t just see homes; we see the dreams and aspirations of our neighbors,” says Mike. “Our mission is to help turn your current home into your dream home with the same care and quality we’ve been offering for over 30 years.” With this philosophy, Ray’s Siding continues to be more than just

TRANSFORM YOUR DREAM HOME

a remodeling business—they are partners in creating the homes and memories that their neighbors will cherish for years to come.

“At Ray’s Siding, you’re not just hiring a contractor,” says Mike, “you’re partnering with a team committed to doing what’s right.”

Give Ray’s Siding a call and see for yourself how they uphold their motto: “We Do More!”

A Toast to Friendship and a Buzz-Worthy Business Pour Decisions:

As fate would have it, Dana’s future husband, Cameron, was introduced to her through Kim during their high school years. “Cameron lived in the same neighborhood as me,” Kim said. “One day, Dana and I were hanging out, and Cameron stopped by to say hi. That’s how they met.”

“It wasn’t until a couple of years later that we reconnected in a biology class at Germanna Community College,” said Dana. “I mentioned to him that he knew my best friend, Kim, and that’s how we started dating.”

Fast forward, Dana and Cameron got married, and now both families live on the same road, so the two friends see each other frequently-- just like in their middle school days.

A Business is Born

The inspiration for their business came in an unexpected way. Dana and her family had recently moved back to Fredericksburg from Georgia when she stumbled upon a TikTok video that changed everything.

“I saw a video where someone transformed an old camper into a mobile bar, and I immediately thought, ‘We could do this,’” Dana said. “I hadn’t seen anything like it in Fredericksburg, and I knew it would be a fun, unique venture.”

Kim didn’t need much convincing. “As soon as Dana mentioned it, I was on board,” Kim said. “My daughter Drew got involved right away, helping us find a camper.”

“Luck was on our side because a 1969 Shasta Compact camper came up for sale in King George,” Dana explained. “Did it need some work? Oh, yes 100%!”

Dana and Kim tackled the project head-on, with help from their husbands and family. “We had to gut the whole thing,” Dana explained. “We even bug-bombed it three times. It took three months of nights and weekends to transform that camper into a bar, but by the end, it was worth every drop of sweat.”

The Key to a Successful Business Partnership

Dana Atkins and Kim Reynolds share a friendship that spans decades, dating back to when they first met in seventh grade at Walker Grant Middle School in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Their bond has only strengthened over the years, leading to a unique and thriving business partnership. Together, they’ve built a deep personal connection and a mobile bar business, Love Buzz Mobile Bar, that is turning heads in the Fredericksburg area.

A Friendship Forged in Middle School

Their story began when Dana moved to Fredericksburg as a middle schooler. “I was the new girl, and the school assigned Kim to help show me around,” Dana recalled. “We had similar classes, and it didn’t take long before we clicked as friends.”

Kim remembers the moment well. “There was an instant connection,” she said. “We shared a lot of the same interests, and we just kind of gravitated toward each other.” That connection would be the foundation for a lifelong friendship that would help them navigate through life together.

Starting a business with a friend can be tricky, but Dana and Kim have made it work seamlessly. They attribute their success to a few fundamental principles: defining roles, having fun, and maintaining open communication.

“We’ve divided responsibilities based on our strengths,” Dana explained. “I handle the operational side of things, while Kim is the master of event shopping and keeping us on budget. We also share many of the tasks, but we lean on each other when life gets busy.”

Kim agrees that balance and teamwork are essential. “Running a business together requires open commu -

nication,” she said. “We listen to each other and stay on the same page. And we make sure to have fun, whether dancing at events or coming up with new cocktails for our clients.”

They both believe that their friendship has made the business experience more enjoyable. “It’s not just about the work,” Dana said. “We’re making memories together, and that’s what makes it special.” Their friendship has not only survived but thrived through the ups and downs of life and business.

“At the end of the day, we’re in this together,” Dana said. “Whether it’s running the business or navigating life, we’ve got each other’s back.”

Outside of their business, Dana and Kim stay connected by working out together at Burn Boot Camp.

“We hold each other accountable and make sure fitness stays top of mind,” Kim shared. Fitness is an important part of their friendship but so is their love of creating. “We love making fresh simple syrups for our cocktails and experimenting with new recipes,” Kim said. “Using fresh ingredients makes our cocktails taste so much better, and we get rave reviews from clients.”

A Strong Sense of Community

Kim has lived in Fredericksburg her whole life and recently moved to the Chancellorsville area three years

ago. Dana and Cameron, after living in Atlanta, also moved back to Fredericksburg three years ago.

They love the Chancellorsville area for its balance between rural beauty and urban convenience. “The sunrises and sunsets here are beautiful,” Kim said. “And we love how close we are to shops and restaurants without feeling like we’re in the middle of a city.”

The two friends enjoy spending time at local spots like Hurkamp Park during First Fridays, where they set up their mobile bar selling mocktails and bougie hot chocolate.

“We love supporting local businesses like Eatz and the Farmers Market,” Dana said. “And we’re huge fans of Mexican food—Agave and Juan More Taco are some of our favorites.”

And they love giving back to the community as well. For the past three years, Dana and Kim have volunteered their time and business to support the local SPCA Fur Ball event. “We love animals and being able to give back to the community,” Kim said.

© Best Version Media

Both Dana and Kim have their own animals as part of their extended family as well. Dana’s dog Ruger is her “pet child,” following her everywhere. “He loves his walks—two miles most days,” Dana said. Ruger is best friends with Kim’s dog Burt and granddog Rory. “They’re like a little squad—going for walks, chasing squirrels, and just hanging out,” Kim laughed. “They’re a big part of our families.”

And now, we get to live a mile from each other and work together every day. We couldn’t ask for anything better.

en off,” Kim said. “We’re excited to keep growing and see where it takes us next.”

The Grace in Giving: Provisions Thrift Store

Any time of year is the perfect time to spread your fortune by helping the less fortunate in the community. Provisions Thrift Store does this day-in and day-out, working relentlessly to collect clothing, household items, and furniture from local families for their facility. They then accept lists of needs from families, and are able to provide the necessary items to these families, free of charge.

The most impactful way in which you can support Provisions Thrift Store is to donate any items you or your family no longer have a use for. Director and founder of Provisions, Jennifer Ware says, “We ask that families consider this when they are closing a donation site for their items no longer used or needed. When cleaning out closets and such each season to consider us and our ministry.”

Provisions Thrift Store has been operating their ministry in our local community for five years. The ministry was founded as Ware recognized a gap in the community and felt called to take action on the issue. From the start, their goal has been to bridge this gap, by providing ease for those who wish to donate for a good cause and by providing easy access to necessary items for those in need.

With locations in both the Fredericksburg and Lake Anna areas, Provisions Thrift Store collects household donations year-long. With the support of the community throughout the year, the ministry is able to be continuously prepared to help those in times of need. As Ware says, “People in need are able to come and receive assistance on the spot which is a true blessing in times of tragedies and loss.”

Provisions will accept any of the following items: new or gently used clothing, seasonal decor, household items or furniture, jewelry, electronics, sports equipment, tools, books, children’s toys, unopened hygiene items, and any other items that could be used to aid a family in need.

Additionally, if you feel compelled to volunteer as a helper at Provisions you may fill out a volunteer application on their website, as long as you are over the age of 15. Volunteers carry out simple tasks such as sorting items, hanging clothes, stocking merchandise, and serving in customer service roles.

The services that Provisions exercise for the people in the community are truly life-changing, and can mean more than anything to those in need. Ware concludes, saying, “There is a huge need in the community for the things that people can no longer use and many families are forever grateful for these goods!”

ON THE AIR

WITH THE BEARS

For its entire school history, an integral part of the Riverbend schedule has been found in the daily morning announcements. Following the pledge of allegiance each day, each teacher joins a Zoom call hosted just downstairs in the RHS library. This allows every student to tune into the daily news. Essential for relaying school announcements, activities, and sports information, these morning announcements truly work to keep each student engaged and aware of the Riverbend community.

Behind the scenes of these announcements is a set of hard-working students. These students are members of the Student Innovative Tech Team handling the tech side of things, and willing seniors who go on the news as announcers. Current senior and regular announcer Nathan Blesi commented on the importance of the news, saying, “It helps keep students excited about what’s to come next, and it is also beneficial because it helps to keep underclassmen informed on exactly how many clubs and after-school activities we offer!” Not only are the announcements broadcast live each morning, but they are put in a slideshow constantly shuffling through on the televisions in the school’s common areas and sent out to parents in daily newsletters.

Typically, the senior board members are the main announcers; however, Blesi’s interest in announcing for RHS was sparked in his junior year. “I kept thinking about it over and over,” Blesi said, “so I just reached out to the news crew, and they let me join!”

Nicole Hagermann, a staff member on the news team, said, “Being a news broadcaster is a privilege that the senior leadership of the building looks forward to throughout their years at Riverbend.”

On the opposite side of the camera sits the current senior and Student Innovative Tech Team member, Danny Bolas, who plays a significant role in the technical troubleshooting and broadcasting of the daily announcements. Bolas recognizes the importance of the news in keeping the student body informed as a whole but also adds that the news is beneficial because of “...the opportunity given to students who want to be a part of the morning announcement teams. It gives them knowledge in tech and improves their public speaking abilities.”

Bolas continued, “My favorite part about being part of the announcements is the connections it has brought me with different students, teachers, and admin at Riverbend and some of the amazing opportunities I have had being part of the Student Innovative Tech Team.”

Hagermann said, “We are proud to show live, on-air morning news daily and think it’s a personable way to make daily connections with RHS students.”

Seeing what the students can put together with loads of hard work and dedication is truly amazing. These students are committed to spreading the school news around the RHS community, and that commitment is an integral aspect of keeping Riverbend High School, as the students know it, running.

CLEANING WITH ZOEY:

Daly Martinez, originally from Mexico and a Fredericksburg resident for the past 18 years, is the proud founder of Cleaning with Zoey, a residential cleaning company named after her daughter. Daly and her longtime friend and business partner, Abraham Martinez, run the business with a shared commitment to delivering exceptional customer service and creating a work-life balance that prioritizes family.

After spending over 15 years in the restaurant industry, Daly and Abraham decided to make a change. Their motivation came from a desire to have more flexibility in their schedules, to have more time with their family, and to build something of their own. Daly, especially, wanted to demonstrate that women can have the “best of both worlds”—caring for children while also contributing financially through entrepreneurship. “I wanted to prove that women can be successful business owners while raising a family,” Daly says. “It’s about independence and showing that you can balance both.”

With this in mind, Daly began cleaning homes for friends a few years ago. Since then, she’s turned her desire to help others into an insured and bonded company serving the Fredericksburg area and Spotsylvania and Stafford counties.

A Customer-Centric Approach

At Cleaning with Zoey, customer satisfaction is the top priority. Daly and Abraham believe that trust, respect, and quality are the pillars of their business. “We value the relationships we build with our clients, and we’re there to do a thorough, quality job every cleaning” Abraham notes. “We’re there to make their lives easier and leave every home sanitized, fresh, and thoroughly cleaned.”

They offer a range of cleaning services, including deep cleaning, recurring cleanings, and move-in/move-out cleanings, with a focus on thoroughness, quality, and customer satisfaction. They take the time to tailor each cleaning to the unique needs of their clients. During the free estimates they offer, they review factors like allergies and cleaning product preferences to ensure a safe and customized experience.

Eco-Friendly and Pet-Friendly

In keeping with their focus on family and environmental responsibility, Cleaning with Zoey uses eco-friendly products and avoids harsh chemicals in their work. They bring all the necessary supplies and provide sanitization services to help families maintain a healthy and clean living space. “We pride ourselves on using products that are not only effective but safe for kids and pets,” Daly says. “Our clients really appreciate that, especially those with allergies or sensitivities.”

As a pet-friendly company, they understand how important pets are to their clients and ensure a comfortable environment for them as well. “Many of our clients have pets, and we love being able to help keep their homes clean without using harsh chemicals,” adds Abraham.

Building Trust Through Service

Daly and Abraham emphasize punctuality, reliability, and a strong work ethic in their business. “We believe in showing up on time and getting the job done right,” Abraham explains. “It’s not about rushing through; it’s about doing a thorough job every time.” Daly echoes this sentiment: “Our goal is to build long-term relationships with our clients. We want them to feel comfortable trusting us with their homes.”

With plans to expand into commercial cleaning in the future, Daly and Abraham are excited about the growth of Cleaning with Zoey. For now, they remain focused on providing the best possible service to their residential clients. First-time customers can currently take advantage of a 20% discount on their cleaning services.

For appointments, call or text Daly and Abraham at Cleaning with Zoey at 540-940-4984 or complete their free estimate form at cleaningwithzoey.com, and enjoy a fresh, clean home tailored to your needs.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and for Bradford Jenner, owner of Affordable Automotive, it’s an opportunity to merge his passion for cars with a cause that hits close to home. Through the Brakes for Breasts campaign, Jenner and his team are not only offering essential vehicle services but they are also raising crucial funds for an innovative breast cancer vaccine trial.

Founded in 2011, Brakes for Breasts brings together independent auto repair shops across the country to support research for a preventive breast cancer vaccine. Affordable Automotive is one of the many businesses involved in this campaign, and for the entire month of October, they are offering free brake pads to customers who bring their vehicles in for brake service. In return, the shop donates 10% of the brake job to the Brakes for Breasts campaign, contributing to the ongoing research aimed at eradicating breast cancer.

“We have helped generate over $6,000 over the past five years, and my goal this year is to donate another $6,000 or more,” said Jenner. Supporting the breast cancer vaccine trial is something Jenner and Affordable Automotive are proud to do. “Not only do we provide a valuable service to our customers, but we also get to contribute to groundbreaking research that could change the future of breast cancer treatment.”

What makes the Brakes for Breasts initiative so impactful is its dual benefit. Customers receive free brake pads—a tangible financial relief for vehicle maintenance—while Affordable Automotive makes a donation toward the vaccine trial. The vaccine, currently in clinical trials, is designed to target a protein that fuels the growth of breast cancer cells, with the potential to prevent the disease altogether.

Jenner’s involvement in Brakes for Breasts is personal. It’s hard to find anyone that hasn’t been affected by breast cancer.

“It runs in my family,” he shared, “but thankfully, no one close to me has had to deal with it directly. I’ve been supporting this campaign for the past five years because I believe

in the cause and the vaccine’s potential for good.” As the Brakes for Breasts nonprofit organization highlights, “Prevention is the cure,” and while treatment for breast cancer is more advanced and effective than it’s ever been, the group raises the great question: “Why wait until it happens to treat it? Let’s stop it before it happens.”

Jenner also highlighted more of what he loves about the nonprofit. “This group was started by two women, Laura Frank and Leigh Anne Best, who own automotive repair shops, and women are a huge part of my own shop,” Jenner said.

“I really like that all the proceeds go directly to funding research for the vaccine, not to pay a large staff or the founders. While organizations like the Susan G. Komen Foundation have certainly made an impact, very little of their funds actually go toward research.”

Since its inception, Brakes for Breasts has raised over $1.8 million, all of which directly supports the research led by Dr. Vincent Tuohy at the Cleveland Clinic. Jenner and his team at Affordable Automotive are honored to be part of this national effort.

“Knowing that we’re contributing to something as life-changing as a breast cancer vaccine is incredibly rewarding,” Jenner says. “It’s a small step in the right direction, but it’s one we can take together as a community.”

For Jenner, October isn’t just about free brake pads—it’s about making a lasting impact. “Women are a huge part of our business,” he emphasized. “We want to do our part to give back to them and support research that could potentially save lives. It’s not just about cars; it’s about driving progress in the fight against breast cancer.”

With this commitment, Affordable Automotive and Bradford Jenner are not just fixing cars—they’re helping to fix a future where breast cancer may no longer exist.

Fawn Lake Triathlon: A Day of Competition, Community, and Triumph

The Fawn Lake Triathlon delivered another exciting day of competition, community spirit, and personal achievements. With 309 participants—up from last year’s 225—the event saw athletes of all ages pushing their limits in an atmosphere of support and camaraderie.

“The Fawn Lake Triathlon really grew!” Beth Thompson, one of the organizers said. “There were 145 adults who participated, 47 youth ages 10-15, 73 youth ages 6-11, and 44 people competing in the relay.”

Organizers and volunteers rallied together throughout the weekend and overcame some hurdles as well— none bigger than a plumbing situation at the eleventh hour that could have proved to be, well, a crappy situation.

Race organizer Jeff Kramer’s experience and poise prevailed though and so did an emergency plumber.

“He was amazing,” Jeff said. “By 9 p.m., he replaced a lift pump with a temporary one. It survived the day, and so did we.” Kramer added with a chuckle, “If there’s anything I’ve learned, you can never have enough bathrooms.”

Volunteers stepped up, too, and those scenes are what Beth Thompson will remember: “At about 5:30 am on race day I saw a dozen people in ‘volunteer neon yellow’ huddled together at a road intersection,” Beth explained. “They were the Triathlon Parking Team, largely members of the Fawn Lake Veteran’s Group, receiving last minute instructions. Further along I could see several volunteers with head lamps assembling bike racks, and I could see movement down on the beach where the start and awards ceremonies would be. These scenes epitomize the volunteers of our community who take heartwarming pride in this event and go above and beyond to support the mission, the athletes, and the charities to make this triathlon a great experience.”

Not only was the triathlon a great experience, but it was quite competitive. “The men’s race this year

was easily the most competitive ever,” Kramer said, noting that six of the top 10 finishers were between 50 and 59– so “Go, old guys!” Fawn Lake resident Travis Turner narrowly edged out last year’s winner, David Stubbs, by 16 seconds.

The women’s race had a different dynamic, led by Jacquelyn Foley and her 14-year-old daughter, Sydney. “Jacquelyn and Sydney dominated the day,” Kramer said. Jacquelyn finished third overall, while Sydney placed 14th, “easily” securing the Fastest Family Competition.

“It was a fantastically run race with beautiful weather. Just a superb family experience,” local competitor Dustin Beall, said. His entire family participated: the Beall children, Alayna, Reagan, and James, all placed in their respective age groups, while Dustin earned ninth place overall and won his age category.

“I was proud of my family. The kids pushed themselves hard. Alayna, 13, received an award for first place in her age category; Reagan, 11, finished 2nd overall for girls 10-15; and, James, 10, finished 2nd overall for the boys 10-11,” Dustin said. “My wife did her leg [of the relay] well and was happy with her time, and I was much improved from last year, winning my age category and 9th overall.”

Overall, the event raised $43,000 for the Families of the Wounded Fund, The Brisben Center, Micah Ministries, The Wilderness Food Pantry, and Squishy Face crew (an animal rescue organization).

As the Fawn Lake Triathlon continues to grow, its impact on the local community remains strong– and not just financially. With fierce competition and a family-friendly atmosphere, the event has become a highlight of the year, bringing athletes and volunteers together in celebration of fitness and community.

“It’s more than just a race,” Amy Huesgen, resident and participant said, “it’s a celebration of the vibrant, supportive place we’re lucky enough to call home.”

• 2 tablespoons Orrington Farms broth base chicken powder

• 2 tablespoons Premium Better Than Bouillon Roasted Chicken Base

• 3 cans diced tomatoes (do not strain)

• 2 cups diced zucchini (yellow and green)

• 3 cups baby spinach

• 1/4 cup parmesan cheese

• 1/4 cup Romano cheese

• 1 can of cooked, strained cannellini beans

• 1 pound baby pasta shells

• 1/4 stick of butter

Variation: add a cup of diced butternut squash for a fall twist.

I cook this in my kitchen in Old World Italian style with few measuring tools. Use this recipe as a guide and let your tastebuds lead you to the amounts that are “just right.” This will yield a very generous pot of hearty soup, so gather friends or place in mason jars to spread some fall cheer.

If you have a favorite recipe you’d like to share, we’d love to hear from you! Please submit your recipes to mhardgrove@bestversionmedia.com by the 10th of each month for consideration.

DIRECTIONS

1. Thoroughly rinse a roasting chicken, pull out the gizzards and neck, and place in a large pot.

2. Fill the large pot with enough water to boil the roasting chicken (about 2/3 full), boil, and let the chicken cook thoroughly.

3. Set aside to let cool. Keep the broth; this will be your base for the soup. Carefully remove the chicken and cool it; carefully remove the bones that may remain in the pot.

4. Add Orrington Farms broth base chicken powder and Premium Better Than Bouillon Roasted Chicken Base to the pot with chicken and broth. Add enough water to regain the volume lost in the boiling process.

5. In a separate pan, sauté olive oil, minced garlic, chopped parsley, sweet onion, chopped celery, and sliced baby carrots. Then add salt and black pepper. Set this aside.

6. Bring the pot with the chicken base broth to a gentle boil and add the diced tomatoes, zucchini, and spinach (and butternut squash if following the fall recipe). Cook at a gentle boil or simmer until the vegetables are softened.

7. While the vegetables are cooking in the soup pot, boil another small pot of water and cook the pasta shells. Strain, add butter, and sprinkle with salt. Set aside.

8. When the chicken is cool enough to touch, peel and dice it, and set it back in the pot with the broth and vegetables. Strain the cannellini beans and add them. Stir in the grated parmesan and Romano cheeses.

9. Once all the ingredients are mixed together, simmer the soup to marry all the flavors.

10. Finally, add the cooked pasta shells, or leave them on the side and add them to the soup before serving.

STEP UP YOUR STAIRCASE

Steps are a necessity as well as an architectural art. Staircases come in all shapes and sizes, including spiral, straight, L-shaped, U-shaped, winder, curved, split, ladder, and cantilever. They may be a passageway from floor to floor or a cascading embellishment ascending in the center of a room. How can a homeowner take their existing staircase to the next level?

Go from hard surface to carpet. This can done in a few ways. First, add a runner to the existing hardwood steps. Decorative runners add a softer step and are a great way to retain the warm look of a wood staircase while adding cushion, color, and design. You could also completely cover the steps with a new pad and carpet. Homeowners with young children and elderly family members go this route because of safety. The carpet can be installed in a cap-and-band (Hollywood) or waterfall style.

Sand and refinish hardwood. When dealing with a flight that needs refinishing, many factors come into play: color matching, dust, inconvenience, and downtime. Refinishing can be a cost-effective way to upgrade. Matching existing wood takes skill. One must consider factors such as wood age, sun bleaching, wood species, and geographical regions. This is where experience matters.

Choose a hard surface stair transformation. Installations expert and Operations Manager at NK Floors, Joe Lewis, skillfully explains the process. “We remove the old carpet, pad, staples, and tack strip. Next, we remove any squeaks and address other concerns about the structural integrity of the stairs. The treads and risers are then carefully cut, beginning from the bottom up, riser then tread. Once that process is complete, the treads and risers are attached with glue and nails and are caulked. Finally, the skirt boards are painted. LVP treads are usually “walk ready” in a few hours, and hardwood treads in four to six hours. I recommend using painted risers for LVP and oak treads for a brighter set of stairs.”

Replace spindles and railing systems. When altering open stairs, the railing system may need to be removed. This is an excellent time to upgrade your balusters or spindles. Replacing wood spindles with low-profile iron rods adds a trendy look. You may also switch from a vertical to a horizontal orientation.

When upgrading steps, the possibilities are endless. Choose your design, select experienced installers, and use superior products. Your results will be a look that lasts and elevates your space. BEFORE

FALL CALLS FOR FAMILY TRADITIONS

We have the unique opportunity once a year to take in the incomparable beauty of fall and make memories with those we love. Nature reminds us nothing stays the same. There is a time for sowing and reaping. Translate this into investing time during the fall season into our families and relationships. Here are a few ideas to ignite an autumn glow of memories.

Serve together. The harvest season brings to mind all kinds of “work” that must be done. You may not live on a farm where crops are harvested. Still, we all have added duties brought in by the season, such as raking falling leaves, cutting and stacking firewood, cleaning out gutters, spreading mulch, and decorating with fall decor. Why not do it as a team? There is joy in working together and camaraderie in completing a task. Families could do this together. Communities and neighbors can share weekends and bless someone who cannot do it for themselves.

Cook and bake together. Fall recipes boast comfort food! Pull some recipes for homemade soup, hearty bread, and fall pies like apple, pumpkin, peach, and cherry. Go to an apple orchard or pumpkin patch to pick the fruit you will turn into a delicious fruit bread. Our family makes Italian wedding soup together. We gather around the kitchen island, slicing ingredients, talking, and laughing. My daughter makes amazing Italian bread, and our mouths water as its aroma fills every room. Gifting these family food creations with an encouraging note always warms a heart.

Gather together. The crisp air almost invites us to pull in closer. Why not host a fall party, chili cook-off, or community bonfire? The possibilities are endless for themes, decorations, music, games, and activities. The planning, shopping, and preparation are shared with others and can be as fun as the event.

Igniting the senses through autumn-filled lenses bliss and glow, a landscape of show Dancing leaves, kaleidoscope trees crunch on your feet, a fire to heat

Frost on the ground, amber sunsets abound chilly breeze invites a sweater to squeeze

Apples and blackberries, picked with delight sweet jams, warm bread, soothe the appetite

Hayrides abounding, cornfields resounding, “Harvest is here!” “Bring on the cheer!” Dusk is looming, harvest moon booming goosebumps raised, nature’s crescendo displayed.

Cozy vibes, sit by my side homemade soup steaming, children’s laughter beaming

A fireside chat, wood to stack teamwork for raking, a heart-talk while baking

Majestic and mystical autumn can be gathered with family and friends in loving harmony.

Memories are made to last; time goes by so fast; Seize the chance before this season is past.

My best fall memories are stacking firewood with my dad, baking pies with Mom, and singing around a bonfire with friends. Fall family traditions are activities to share, but more so fertile soil for planting seeds for “life talks” and creating meaningful connections. Fall family traditions reap a lasting harvest in our families and community. What will yours be this year?
