2024 Kitchen Design: Fusing Nature, Technology, and Timeless Aesthetics

TUNE-UP

In 2024, kitchen design will continue to evolve, emphasizing the fusion of natural elements, personalization, and minimalist principles for easy maintenance. These themes underscore the coupling of contemporary technology with timeless aesthetics, resulting in functional and visually appealing kitchens while prioritizing environmental consciousness. Here’s a condensed overview of the key themes influencing kitchen design this year:

Integration of the Outdoors: Embracing nature within kitchen spaces enhances the cooking and dining experience. This integration can be achieved through:

• Use of natural materials such as wood, stone, or brick for countertops, flooring, and accent walls to evoke the outdoors.

• Adoption of an outdoor-inspired color palette, featuring earth tones and soft greens, to create a serene atmosphere.

• Incorporation of large windows or glass doors to invite natural light and blur the line between indoor and outdoor spaces.

• Consideration of extending the kitchen into an outdoor area, such as a covered patio with a built-in grill and sink, for seamless outdoor cooking and entertaining.

Personalization of Design: Tailoring the kitchen to suit individual needs and preferences is critical to creating a space that feels uniquely yours. This involves:

• Designing customized storage solutions, such as pull-out pantry shelves and adjustable shelving, to maximize space and efficiency.

• Integrating smart or innovative technology, like touchless faucets and voice-controlled appliances, to enhance functionality and convenience.

• Creating flexible layouts with movable kitchen islands and modular furniture to adapt to various cooking and entertaining needs.

• Incorporating personalized aesthetics through custom cabinetry, unique hardware, and bespoke finishes that reflect your style and personality.

Minimalistic Designs and Ease of Maintenance: Simplifying kitchen spaces promotes a clean and clutter-free environment that is both visually appealing and easy to maintain. Strategies for achieving minimalistic designs include:

• Opting for sleek cabinetry with clean lines and minimal hardware, made from durable materials like laminate or matte-finish wood veneers.

• Choosing integrated appliances that seamlessly blend into the cabinetry, reducing visual clutter and simplifying cleaning.

• Selecting minimalist hardware and fixtures, such as sleek drawer pulls and simple faucet designs, to complement the overall aesthetic.

• Installing easy-to-clean flooring materials like ceramic tile or luxury vinyl plank, while maximizing storage space with hidden solutions like pull-out pantry shelves and built-in organizers.

By embracing these emerging themes in kitchen design, homeowners can create spaces that meet their practical needs and reflect their personal style, promote sustainability, and foster a sense of harmony with the natural world.

Triumph Through Teamwork: The Fawn Lake Family Triathlon ©

Tough Mudder. Ironman. The Murph Challenge. America is no stranger to competitions, from athletic to intellectual and everything in between; we even celebrate our nation’s birthday with a hotdog-eating contest. We’re well-versed in the requirements of marathons and triathlons, too, where participants continue to push themselves to their mental and physical limits— it’s not a new concept.

Our region presents various opportunities to partake in races as well, from the Army 10-Miler to the Marine Corps Marathon and the Historic Half Marathon, but one local event does stand out among the competition: The Fawn Lake Triathlon. What sets this annual event-- now celebrating its 15th year-- apart from others is its family focus.

“Our vision for the Triathlon is for it to be a family experience,” said Race Director Jeff Kramer. “Breaking away from the routine of putting the kids in the car and driving to the field to sit in the stands and cheer. That is fine, but my dream is for the entire family to race.”

Racing in a triathlon requires training for multiple weeks and even months, and the committee, Jeff, and other volunteers hope that the “families who train together, stay together.”

While the event won’t occur until August 25 this year, the bonds families make during their training regimens become just as meaningful as the race itself.

“The race doesn’t start on August 25,” Jeff explained. “It starts weeks ahead of time with family bike rides, swim days, and even family jogs— each member encouraging others to get ready for race day.”

“Competing in Triathlons had always been an interest of mine, but raising four young kids had somewhat kept my triathlon goals on the back burner,” participant Dustin Beall explained. “When I heard about the Fawn Lake Triathlon, I suspected it would be a fantastic opportunity to participate in an event that is not only conveniently close to home, but also would bring the family together both for summer ’training’ sessions and race day.”

© Best Version Media

Dustin, along with his oldest children Alayna (13), Reagan (11), and James (9), competed for the first time last year, and “Man, it did not disappoint!”

“I presumed the event would be well-run, which it was,” Dustin explained, “but the coolest thing about the Fawn Lake Triathlon experience was having the opportunity to compete myself and then getting to cheer on each of my kids.”

“As parents, we are familiar with driving our kids around to their sports practices and games and proudly cheering for them. Some of us even make time to compete in our own competitions like marathons or other races,” Dustin continued.

“But it is a rare occurrence to be able to train, compete, and celebrate each other’s accomplishments as a family, together, in the same event.”

“I’ve grown up in the Fawn Lake community since I was seven,” said Amy Huesgen. Over the years, I’ve watched my father participate in numerous running and

triathlon events, which he still does today. She explained that he signed up for the first Fawn Lake Triathlon in 2009.

“Since then, the Fawn Lake Triathlon has become a cherished family event. My sisters and I have joined in over the years, making it a true family tradition. We may participate in races all over the country, but there’s something special about being able to train and compete right in our own neighborhood,” Amy said.

Two years ago, the family had its third generation of participants, as Amy’s son Brady was old enough to participate.

“He had been swimming for the Fawn Lake Swim team all summer, so he was well-prepared. And just like the rest of us, he absolutely loved the experience,” Amy Huesgen said. “I love how the triathlon teaches kids to encourage one another, try their hardest, and believe that anything is possible!”

It’s possible to do a great deal of good with their efforts, as the event benefits numerous charities across the area and relies heavily on community volunteers, as it attracts outstanding athletes from all over the DMV.

Over 100 volunteers from the community come together to support the event. Volunteers ensure safety throughout the numerous courses (pool, lake, biking, and running), direct people as parking crews, serve on registration and hospitality teams, and much more.

“We have no paid staff,” Jeff Kramer explained. “One hundred percent of our race proceeds (after expenses) go to our chosen charities. The race has become a marquee event on the Fawn Lake calendar.”

“Last year, the Triathlon was able to donate $30,000 to the Families of the Wounded Fund, which serves wounded veteran families in Central Virginia,” explained Beth Thompson. “This year, the beneficiaries will include the Families of the Wounded Fund, The Brisben Center, Micah Ministries, The Wilderness Food Pantry, and Squishy Face Crew (an animal rescue organization). The Triathlon benefits the entire community on so many levels.”

There are various levels of participation in the event, too, as it consists of four races: an adult race (15+), two youth races (6-11 years old and 10-15 years old), and an adult three-person relay. All four races involve swimming, biking, and running in the beautiful Fawn Lake community.

“We will host 250 participants and 100+ community volunteers,” explained Jeff. “Our race is even included in USA Traithlon’s VA/MD Summer Youth Series, which attracts many of the finest young triathletes in the region.”

The family aspect is the heart of the race, and the entire Fawn Lake family contributes to its success, especially the pickleball lovers who reside in the community.

“We joke that, without the pickleball community, the race would be severely understaffed,” Jeff laughed. “And on race day, the always full courts are a ghost town.” The team gives all to the cause and credits their Fawn Lake family as well as “Fawn Lake Legend Bob Stumpf,” who was “the steady hand for years that helped the Triathlon to become what it is today.”

“I have been a race director for almost 45 years,” Jeff explained. “Putting a successful Triathlon together requires multiple forces to come together. You need a great, safe, and beautiful place to swim, bike, and run. You need a community willing to hand over that area for a full day. You need generous local businesses to help foot the bill. Lastly, you need a huge volunteer focus providing directions, race management, refreshments, security, and safety.”

“At Fawn Lake, we have all that in spades: a great lake, rolling hills bike course, then a shady and interesting run course,” Jeff continued. The event also requires the cooperation of the Fawn Lake Community Administration Team and the Fawn Lake Country Club Staff.

“All of those factors coming together is what makes the Fawn Lake Triathlon a special event,” Jeff said. “You will find the racers and volunteers both working together and both having fun.”

“We love the Triathlon because it allows our family to compete and finish a tough race without having to leave home,” explained Chris Yurasko, who competes along with his older children, Jonathan (12), Elizabeth (9), and Zachary (7). “It allows the kids to put their swimming, bike riding, and running skills to the test and, most importantly, sets a bar for a lifetime of fitness and activity.”

The race activities and festivities culminate with an awards ceremony and a pizza party, and everyone celebrates their accomplishments together as a true community. This year, the committee is adding an extra special category to the awards: a “Fastest Family” Award.

No matter who stands atop the podium post-race, the real winners are the incredible individuals who participate in, plan, and execute this event, adding more cherished memories each successive year.

“The entire Beall family– including my wife, Amanda, who is running in the adult relay– hopes to participate in the Fawn Lake Triathlon for years to come,” said Dustin. “And we are incredibly grateful to the Triathlon Committee and all of the other volunteers that make this special event possible. It’s even better knowing that the fun funds great causes and helps our community.”

Amy Huesgen echoed those same sentiments.

“It’s where we gather as a family to challenge ourselves, support one another, and create lasting memories,” she said. “The Fawn Lake Triathlon has become an integral part of our family’s story, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. We’re so grateful to be a part of a community that prioritizes active, healthy lifestyles and provides a platform for events like this that bring everyone together,” Amy continued.

“The Fawn Lake Triathlon is more than just a race– it’s a celebration of the vibrant, supportive place we’re lucky enough to call home.”

The 15th Annual Fawn Lake Adult Spring and Youth Triathlon will take place on Sunday, August 25, 2024, in the community of Fawn Lake, beginning at 7:30 a.m. For more information, see trisignup.com/Race/VA/Spotsylvania/FawnLakeTri.

SURVIVING SUMMER STORMS AND FIREWORKS:

Pet’s Guide to Zen

Summer’s arrival brings not just sunny days, but also thunderstorms and fireworks. Explosive sounds, including booms echoing from Quantico, can easily turn your typically calm pet into a panting, drooling, nervous wreck. Here are a few integrative techniques you can use to keep your furry friend calm during these stressful events.

Create a Safe Space

Create a designated quiet and cozy haven indoors where your pet can retreat during loud events, ideally away from windows and external walls to minimize noise. Provide their favorite bedding and toys for comfort, and play calming music or white noise to further drown out the booms. Remember, your pet can sense your anxiety, so it’s important to stay calm yourself.

Try a Thundershirt

Invest in a Thundershirt – these swaddling garments apply gentle, constant pressure to your pet’s body, which can have a calming effect.

Use Acupressure Points for Calming

Acupressure, akin to acupuncture, can be applied to help soothe your pet Gently press and massage each point with your thumb in a circular motion for about 1-2 minutes. Here are three points to focus on:

GV 20: On top of the head, directly in the middle between the ears.

Get Professional Help!

If your pet’s noise phobia is severe, consider consulting your veterinarian. They can provide tailored strategies and, if necessary, prescribe medication to help manage your pet’s anxiety.

An-shen (Calm Spirit): A pair of points - Behind the head in the depression at the back of each ear base.

PC 6: On the inside of the front leg, 1/3 of the way up from the wrist.

Work on Desensitization

Gradually expose your pet to recorded sounds of loud noises, thunderstorms, or fireworks at a very low volume, rewarding them for staying calm. Slowly increase the volume over time.

Consider Calming Treats/Supplements

There are numerous brands of calming treats on the market, most containing natural ingredients formulated to decrease anxiety. CBD has also gained popularity for its potential to reduce anxiety. Always consult your veterinarian before introducing any new supplement to ensure it’s appropriate for your pet.

LEASHES OF VALOR:

SAVING LIVES, ONE LEASH AT A TIME

It’s no secret that war takes a toll on service members. Some return from war with visible wounds and scars, but many more return with wounds invisible to the eye— that’s precisely where Leashes of Valor steps in to help. Founded in 2017 by retired Marine Corps Capt. Jason Haag, this nonprofit organization provides service dogs at no cost to wounded and disabled veterans who served during and after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

“One Leash Saves Two Lives,” explained Haag, which encapsulates the organization’s mission to save both the dog and the veteran it serves.

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND LEASHES OF VALOR

Jason Haag’s journey to founding Leashes of Valor is deeply personal. A Marine with three combat deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, Haag faced numerous physical and psychological challenges.

“I was injured multiple times from machine gun fire and bomb blasts. I recovered from those injuries, but it was the invisible injuries I struggled with the most,” Haag shared. After being medically retired in 2013 due to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Haag experienced symptoms like nightmares, hyper-vigilance, anger, and isolation. Despite receiving treatment from the Department of Veterans Affairs, it wasn’t until he received his service dog, Axel, that he began to truly recover.

“Axel and I were together for ten years before his death in January 2023,” Haag fondly recalled. Axel’s impact on Haag’s life was both profound and transformative.

“I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my service dog, Axel. Axel truly saved my life,” Haag emphasized.

“Axel and I spent many years traveling the country, educating policymakers and the public about the life-changing impacts of service dogs for veterans suffering from PTSD and other ‘unseen’ injuries of war. I wanted that for as many other veterans as possible.”

THE PHILOSOPHY AND IMPACT

Motivated by his own experience, Haag founded Leashes of Valor to offer the same life-changing support to other veterans. “We’ve paired more than 32 service dogs with veterans. We’ve had zero suicides and so many success stories,” he proudly noted.

Leashes of Valor operates on the philosophy that pairing a veteran with a service dog can significantly improve their quality of life.

“Our dogs are often from shelters, rescue groups, or are owner-surrenders. The leash saves not only the dog’s life, but that of the veteran,” Haag explained.

Training a service dog is a long and expensive process, taking about two years and costing more than $25,000. However, the profound impact on veterans and their families makes it all worthwhile.

“The best part of my role is seeing a veteran’s face when they meet their service dog. They hope their lives will change, but they can’t yet imagine all the ways it will,” explained Haag.

“There is so much hope in their faces and demeanors, but sometimes skepticism, too, like ‘Will this be what finally helps me heal?’ And it is.”

Community Support and Engagement

organization provides all necessary supplies and training for fosters, ensuring the dogs receive the best possible care and preparation for their future roles.

The success of Leashes of Valor is also a testament to the incredible support from the Fredericksburg community.

“We couldn’t have asked for a more generous and supportive community,” Haag said. “This includes individuals and families who’ve volunteered, hosted fundraisers, held donation drives, and fostered our service dog candidates.” The local business community has also been instrumental in supporting the organization’s mission.

One inspiring story from Leashes of Valor’s journey involved a hoarding situation in a neighboring county.

“Weeks after moving to our Fredericksburg location in February 2023, our trainers learned about an elderly woman with 28 puppies. She took wonderful care of them, but it was overwhelming. Our trainers did an evaluation and planned to get two puppies, but they brought home six,” Haag recalled. The unexpected addition of six puppies was “a challenge,” but the community’s support made it possible to integrate them into the program successfully.

Leashes of Valor also frequently hosts events to engage the community and raise funds.

“We always have events planned, and several of our service dogs in training are at every event. You can find a list of our events on our website at leashesofvalor. org,” Haag mentioned. One notable event series is the Valor Cup Tournament, which helps raise money for their mission, and information about all upcoming tournaments is available at valorcup.org.

CONTINUING THE MISSION

Leashes of Valor continues to expand its reach and impact, always looking for new ways to support veterans. One key aspect of their program is their robust foster system for service dog candidates.

“We are always looking for fosters and have occasional, short-term, and longterm opportunities available. The more fosters we have, the more dogs we can have in our program and the more veterans we can serve,” Haag explained. The

Haag also expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the greater Fredericksburg community.

“I want to thank this incredible community for everything they’ve done for Leashes of Valor. We couldn’t have done it without you.”

Through dedication, compassion, and community support, Leashes of Valor continues to make a profound difference in the lives of veterans and service dogs alike, embodying their motto that one leash truly can save two lives.

Sunny Days and Story Nights

Assummer is now upon us with full force, a unique opportunity for children to dive into their passion for reading has arisen. Summer is the perfect time to fight dragons in a fantasy world, put on a detective’s hat to solve a fictional mystery, or see life through the eyes of another character.

Summer is the perfect time to explore books, as reading isn’t only about maintaining an academic skill but also about sparking creativity, growing imagination, and fostering a lifelong passion for reading.

Taking trips to the library is an easy and affordable method to cultivate this hobby, as there are endless books to choose from. However, I know from experience that sometimes finding the “perfect” book can be challenging. So that is where this article will come in handy! I will give you some ideas for books I’ve read and loved throughout my reading journey, and I would recommend them!

KINDERGARTEN-5TH GRADE

The Little Engine That Could By Watty Piper

This is more than just a well-known children’s book; it’s the perfect example of perseverance and hard work. Following a train engine that possesses mounds of confidence as it repeats, “I think I can. I think I can,” it is sure to teach children of any age a meaningful life lesson to continue pushing forward against all odds.

Because of Mr. Terupt By Rob Buyea

This is the perfect read for elementary children. It follows the unique lives of 5th-grade students and how significant an impact their kind teacher has on each of their lives. Alternating perspectives, this book displays the importance a single person’s presence can have on many lives.

6TH-8TH GRADE

Land of Stories By Chris Colfer

A perfect blend of existing fairy tales with new twists, this fantasy-filled series follows the lives and adventures of twins, Alex, and Connor in and out of the fantasy lands. There is always a surprise change in the plot right

around the corner that is sure to maintain the reader’s interest for the entire length of the series.

Life As We Knew It By Susan Beth Pfeffer

Following a teenage girl and her family after an asteroid hits the moon, this novel is heart-wrenching. The story is told through journal entries that mark the challenges and the adventures the family must undergo to survive the Earth’s new disasters.

The Giver By Lois Lowry

This novel is completely thought-provoking. It’s about a dystopian society that is seemingly perfect but suppresses the emotion and individuality of its citizens. It raises questions about the importance and value of knowledge and what happens if that is withheld.

9TH-12TH GRADE

Chaos Walking By Patrick Ness

Set in a dystopian future, this novel is driven on through the adventures of Todd and Viola as they set out to rebel against the town that Todd has known all of his life. In Prentisstown, each man’s thoughts are entirely audible to those around them. You will surely be kept on the edge of your seat as war is fought, battles are won, and the characters search for themselves amidst chaos.

We Were Liars By E. Lockhart

In a thrilling story full of mystery, unravel the dark secrets of the wealthy Sinclair family as they live their summers on a private island. If you are willing to dive into a world full of family secrets, regret, and betrayal, this twopart series will surely leave your mouth agape.

With this, I challenge you to read as many books as possible this summer! But, if you want to accept the ultimate challenge, I urge you to continue reading beyond the summer. Continue through the next school year, the rest of your childhood, and all through your life. Because as Dr. Seuss says, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

APEROL SPRITZ RECIPE: A Taste of Veneto at Home

Living in Italy for almost three years was a delightful experience that introduced me to the joys of the Aperol Spritz. This vibrant and refreshing cocktail is a staple in the Veneto region, home to Prosecco Road, where Aperol and prosecco are both affordable and readily available. In our small town of Marola, on the outskirts of Vicenza, you could often find Aperol Spritzes for as little as €2,5 to €3, usually accompanied by a small snack like chips. Italians cherish their aperitivo time, a tradition akin to “Happy Hour” in America, but with a distinct cultural twist.

History of the Spritz

The spritz has a long and storied history in Italy, dating back to the 19th century when the Austrians ruled the Veneto region. Austrian soldiers found Italian wines too strong, so they began diluting them with a splash– or “spritz”– of water, most likely to be more like beer, creating the first version of the spritz. Over time, the spritz evolved, and Aperol, introduced in 1919 by the Barbieri brothers, became a popular ingredient. Today, the Aperol Spritz is synonymous with Italian aperitivo culture, a time for socializing and enjoying light drinks and snacks before dinner.

Aperol Spritz Recipe

The recipe for an Aperol Spritz is simple, yet it delivers a complex and delightful taste. You can customize it with different ingredients to suit your preferences. Here’s how to make it:

Ingredients:

3 parts prosecco

2 parts Aperol

1 part club soda or sparkling water

Ice cubes

Orange slice for garnish

Instructions:

Fill a large wine glass halfway with ice cubes.

Add 3 parts Prosecco.

Add 2 parts Aperol.

Add 1 part club soda or sparkling water. Stir gently to combine.

Garnish with an orange slice. Serve immediately and enjoy.

Variations:

Limoncello Spritz: Substitute Aperol with limoncello for another citrusy twist.

Campari Spritz: Substitute Campari for a more bitter and stronger drink.

Flavored Sparkling Water: Try using blood orange or other flavored

Memories and Tips:

My first encounter with the Aperol Spritz was slightly bitter, but it quickly became a favorite. By the end of our stay in Italy, I found myself enjoying spritzes with our neighbors 2-3 times a week. We even had “Fanta Fridays” with our girls, where they enjoyed Fanta (which is essentially carbonated orange juice in Italy) while I savored my spritz. This tradition, accompanied by San Carlo potato chips, became a cherished part of our routine after school pick-up to start the weekend. Even now, back in the States, we continue to enjoy the Aperol Spritz, thanks to finding affordable prosecco from Valdobbiadene at Costco. Although I do miss paying only €11 for a liter of Aperol, I can still find it here for about $27-$30 and the Prosecco is only $7 at Costco.

So, next time you want to reminisce about Italian aperitivo and have a drink alongside some bruschetta or cicchetti, or you simply want to enjoy a refreshing cocktail, make yourself an Aperol Spritz. Sit down, relax, and let the flavors transport you back to the beautiful piazzas of Italy. Cin cin!

SPRINGTIME SERENADES: RIVERBEND HIGH SCHOOL SPRING MUSIC PERFORMANCES

Julia Pesnell is a rising senior at Riverbend High School. She is a student of the Commonwealth Governor’s School and serves as the Riverbend Junior Class President. Julia also runs cross country and track for the Riverbend High School team. She holds the position of committee executive for the Spanish Honor Society and is a class representative for their chapter of HOSA. Beyond her leadership roles, Julia is actively involved in community service and is a member of the National English Honor Society.

The music department is often overlooked within a school as large as Riverbend. The students in the band, chorus, and orchestra are very talented. This year, they have had multiple public performances and assessments, all of which the Bears have performed amazingly at.

BAND

The band is very extensive as it covers five performing groups: concert band, symphonic band, wind ensemble, jazz band, and marching band. Each spring performance was remarkable, as the students worked all year to challenge themselves. Riverbend band director Jennifer Lewis said, “My students challenged me to challenge them more this year. They were always eager to learn more difficult music and had the work ethic both individually and with their section mates to perform at a high level.”

Lewis has taught music in Spotsylvania County for 20 years and has been with the RHS music department for three years. Through this, she has acquired significant expertise and is a fantastic teacher for each of her students. This was unendingly displayed at assessment, as the band achieved perfect scores across the board.

Junior wind ensemble student Addison Pennings said, “The biggest accomplishment for the band this year was our perfect score at assessment! We worked so hard to perfect every piece, and our hard work definitely paid off.”

When it came time for the spring performance, the successes continued, as the four sit-down bands all put on phenomenal shows with a variety of challenging music pieces. Lewis said, “We had pop, movie themes, Broadway, funk, jazz, it was quite eclectic!”

Pennings excitedly says that her favorite piece performed was entitled “Arabesque,” in which she had the privilege of playing the opening flute solo. “As a band, this was the hardest piece we have ever played, and we worked so hard to put it all together,” Pennings said.

Lewis continued talking about the unmatchable community that being in the band provides, saying, “Band at Riverbend is more than a class-- it’s a community. Students forge friendships that can last a lifetime. No matter what our students pursue after high school, the intangible skills they develop through experiences in the performing arts will benefit them greatly.”

CHORUS

This year’s chorus group was full of gifted singers, and under the direction of Mr. Devante Lucas, they achieved a perfect score of straight superiors at assessment.

Senior Sydney Charter has been singing all her life and got into her first audition choir at age 8. She has been an integral part of the school choir in both middle and high school. Charter said, “My favorite part about being in the choir is making music together with friends using nothing other than your voice. There’s no other feeling like it.”

At this year’s spring choir performance, Charter had the honor of performing a solo in one of the songs. Of the songs performed, Charter concluded that her absolute favorite was Sarah Quartel’s My Child because of the message it portrays and the beautiful harmonies of the song.

Charter concluded, saying, “I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity of singing in many choirs under many directors and learning from each and every one of them… I know I will take what I’ve learned and use it in my journey to becoming a music teacher.”

ORCHESTRA

To round off the astounding performances of the music department, orchestra also achieved perfect, scores at assessment! Senior, Cade Whittier, marks this achievement as the most significant in his eyes, as it was something each student had to work very hard to achieve.

Whittier plays the cello for symphonic orchestra, and when asked about his favorite aspect, he said, “...the feeling when all of us get a song down. We then get to enjoy the thing we worked so hard for together.”

The spring orchestra concert was stunning. Each piece was perfectly selected and perfectly played. Whittier said that his favorite song performed was the piece from La La Land.

Whittier concluded, “I think everyone should find a way to enjoy or participate in music.”

SPRING SEASON STANDOUTS: Riverbend High School Spring Sports Recap

TENNIS

The girls had a phenomenal season, maintaining an undefeated streak of 12-0 and becoming district champions. “The girls have had an incredible season!” coach Brian Ratzlaff said. Senior and team co-captain Maya Jani showed off her talent as she continued her four-year streak of being undefeated in singles play and graduated as valedictorian. Jani said, “My favorite aspect is the friendship and community I have found with the team.”

The boys continued their previous success, with a 17-1 record and the district title for the second straight year. Coach Curtis Harris said, “Seeing all our players’ maturity, growth, and improvement was impressive.”

TRACK AND FIELD

These athletes performed optimally at each meet, achieving countless school records, spanning the mile to the triple jump. Coach Anedra Logan said, “If I could

rename the season, I would call it record breaker!” Junior Sophie Lee has been on the team for three years and tried a new event this year: the 400. Lee said, “I found my event this season. Through that, I qualified for states, and I’m excited to keep improving.”

SOCCER

The girls’ team was strong this year as they became district champions, scoring an impressive 47 goals while only allowing six goals behind their own keeper. Coach Pete Cinalli said, “Our success is built on how hard our team plays and how amazingly they work together and care about each other.” One notable player, senior, team-captain, and goalie, Molly Schnellenberger has played soccer for 12 years but has “always a goalkeeper at heart.” She went on to talk about her favorite aspect of the team: the players. Schnellenberger said, “…the real strength of this team is our players’ personalities: everyone is determined, accepting, kind, and hilarious!” Cinalli said, “They just fought so hard no matter what. The result was incredible success on the field!”

The boys persevered through a tough season, ending with a record of 6-7-2. Coach Michael Recore chose not to view it as a letdown season, as he said, “Success is not measured necessarily with wins, rather by realizing your potential as an individual and as a group.” He discussed the team’s improvements concerning sportsmanship, revealing that they received half as many red and yellow cards as the previous season. Junior Alvin Garcia said, “Our greatest accomplishment this season was the fact that we never gave up.”

LACROSSE

The girls fought hard this season, ending with a record of 7-6 and the opportunity to compete in the regional playoffs. Coach Paige Hennessy says, “I

was super impressed with how well the team played together.” Five girls made it onto the all-district team, including senior Ava Doherty. Doherty said, “This lacrosse season has been marked by growth and collective effort, culminating in our team reaching the regional semifinals.”

The boys’ team faced many injuries and illnesses but continued pushing through. Coach David Belling said, “The highlights were they did not give up, and the next guy stepped in to play hard.” Four players were selected for the all-district team. Belling highlighted one player in particular, senior David Chicas-Hernandez, who stepped up to play goalie, even though he had never played lacrosse before. Chicas-Hernandez went on to receive the Eastman Scholarship. As Belling said, “The scholarship is for $1,000 for one senior each year who shows heart, teamwork, dedication, and coachability, and also performs off the field in school and in life.” Chicas-Hernandez, said, “Winning the Eastman scholarship felt pretty surreal to me.”

BASEBALL

This baseball season was one for the books, as the team had 14 wins, earned the regional title, and advanced to the state semifinals. This is the first regional title in school history, and Coach James Labrusciano commented that the athletes stepped up to fill big shoes: “This has contributed tremendously to our 14 wins and our number one seed in regions again this year.”

SOFTBALL

These girls took a big step, as they placed six girls on the all-district team. Coach Brianna Worley was impressed with this group of girls. Worley said, “I am proud of this team for fighting through adversity this season and continuing to strive to be better every day.”

Karie, a native of Pennsylvania, cherishes her roots in faith and family above all else. Together with her husband and their nine children, they have fearlessly embraced life’s adventures, including living in Africa and establishing a successful business. Beyond her roles as a dedicated wife and mother, Karie is a passionate educator, talented musician, and enthusiastic traveler. Her love for exploring new cultures and experiencing the world is matched only by her appreciation for a good cup of coffee.

Transforming Your Outdoors to an Oasis

The enchantment of summer is upon us. Leisure and frolic have taken on new heights, and our outdoor spaces have become nature escapes. Tranquility and warm connections are calling. You can transform an outdoor eyesore into a tantalizing tapestry. King of his craft, Paul Gardner, owner of Artscapes, shares his expertise with us.

CONSIDER THE PREFERENCES OF THE HOMEOWNER.

What is your primary goal for your outdoor space? Do you seek entertainment, relaxation, or aesthetics? Do you have any specific features in mind such as a glowing fire pit with comfortable seating, decorative water features, or an outdoor kitchen? Do you have a budget and a specific style in mind? Are there existing landscaping or structures to be incorporated or removed? What is the maintenance level you are comfortable with?

MAKE AN OUTDOOR SPACE INVITING.

This can be accomplished by landscaping, lighting, patio work, and decor. Use a variety of lush plants, trees, and seasonal shrubs to create a dynamic environment. Install pathway lights, string lights, or landscape spotlights for safety and ambiance. Use pavers for a durable, stylish patio floor. Embellish with outdoor cushions, throws, rugs, planters, and sculptures.

DREAM OF THE ULTIMATE OUTDOOR SUMMER GATHERING AREA.

A dream space could include a spacious patio or deck with ample seating and charming dining areas to invite family and friends. From here you could add an

elaborate outdoor kitchen, grill, and prep space. Position it close to the indoor kitchen for convenience. Include a sink, fridge, storage, and inviting counter for socializing. Integrate a pool or hot tub in the landscaping for ultimate, year-round relaxation. A nearby pavilion, pergola, umbrella, or awning could provide shade and comfort for guests. A cozy fire, string lights, landscape lights, and intimate lanterns perfect an evening gathering.

USE AND MAINTAIN DURING FALL AND WINTER.

With fire features, use fire pits or outdoor heaters to extend usability into cooler months. Ensure ample lighting for shorter days. Use weatherproof furniture and consider covers or storage during the off-season. When using hardscaping, choose materials that can withstand freezing and thawing cycles. For plants, include evergreens and vegetation with berries or varied bark texture to maintain color vibrance. Now it’s your turn. This is only the beginning. Adventure Awaits

IN OUR NATIONAL PARKS

We were ready for adventure! Our wanderlust had grown to epic proportions. The RV had snacks, blankets, clothes, games, and all the “things” for a fun-filled family vacation. We were headed for a destination of bliss to several of our nation’s breathtaking national parks. These are trips of a lifetime! Booking the campgrounds, packing, and making sure the kiddos are occupied is crucial. Then comes the tactical search for activities, perfect hikes, scenic drives, savory restaurants, and the perfect souvenir shops. So take it from someone who has experienced spending weeks on end with teens and young children in an RV to see some of the most beautiful sights on earth; it can be accomplished and enjoyed!

One truth about visiting our national parks is that there is so much to see and so little time. The National Park Service app was helpful in choosing sights and hikes with distances and degrees of difficulty. The app describes the national parks and provides photo galleries, activities, amenities, weather, and park fees. Being informed is critical, especially when encountering dangerous terrain and wildlife. Plan ahead and know what to pack for food, water, proper shoes, and clothing.

Our first exploration was to The Grand Canyon and Zion National Parks. We were unaware of the beauty we would encounter. While indulging in our hikes, we were awed by the splendor of copper sunsets, castles of painted sandstone, rainstorms that quenched dry sand, hidden pools of emerald, and hues of flowers that beamed from clefts of jolting rocks. As a family, we were transported to terrestrial wonderlands. Our next stop on this journey was

Bryce Canyon. We raced through the soul-freeing, scenic trails on a pack of four-wheelers. We were made alive with wind in our hair and sun dancing on the valleys!

We escaped to Yellowstone, The Grand Tetons, and Badlands National Parks this summer. While traversing The Grand Tetons, we soaked in snowcapped mountains, prolific evergreens, crystal streams, radiant blue skies, roaring rapids, and exquisite sunsets. Elk pranced in the meadows while we were immersed in the therapeutic mineral water of hot springs. In our stops, we were transported through time to neighboring Wild West towns and log-cabin diners.

As our voyage continued to Yellowstone, the land of a supervolcano, we entered the sci-fi dimensions of thermal vents, erupting geysers, mud volcanoes, turquoise pools, and rainbow hot springs. Wildlife was abundant and intriguing. Bison grazed, almost unaware of our close presence. The experience was magnificent! Moose, grizzlies, and wolves roam free while bald eagles soar above the mountaintops. Our final expedition was a sunset drive through the Badlands.

While sitting around a campfire, I could only imagine what it must have been like to live during the days of the untamed West. Reflecting on traveling the world, little can be compared to the majestic beauty in our sixty-three national parks. What could be next on our list of national park adventures? Glacier and Olympic National Parks might be on the horizon. What is on your list? I encourage you to make this “bucket list” a near-future reality. Begin dreaming at https://www.nps.gov.

AgaveBar & Grill in Fredericksburg, VA, is a charming Mexican restaurant offering an authentic and diverse menu that caters to a wide range of tastes. My friend and I met for lunch a few weeks ago, and it’s our new favorite Mexican spot. It is apparent from the moment you walk in that the restaurant prides itself on its culinary excellence, which is quite evident in its fresh and flavorful dishes, excellent service, and impressive drink options.

We each indulged in a margarita alongside our meals, and we wished we would have done a flight because they were absolutely delicious. I ordered the mango one and loved the Tajin seasoning on the rim of the glass instead of the usual salt. The bar at Agave offers a fantastic selection of tequilas and mezcals. The knowledgeable bartenders and servers can guide you through the choices or craft a delicious margarita tailored to your taste. Additionally, the restaurant offers a variety of Mexican beers and crafted cocktails, ensuring that there is something for everyone.

Agave’s menu is a testament to the rich and diverse flavors of Mexican cuisine. It’s not just about the traditional Mexican favorites such as tacos, enchiladas, and fajitas, but also about the innovative dishes that put a modern twist on classic recipes. The quality of the food is consistently high, with fresh ingredients and careful preparation that highlights the rich flavors of Mexican cuisine. You can be reassured that every dish is a delight.

My friend ordered the tacos de asada for her meal, and she complimented the flavor and portions. I opted for the fajitas de asada, as steak fajitas are my barometer for my first meal at any new Mexican restaurant. They definitely measured up to my standards. Occasionally, places will skimp on the meat and fill the sizzling plate with too many onions or peppers, but not Agave. To my pleasant surprise, too, I loved the refried beans that came on the side, and I have never liked refried beans.

The service at Agave is another highlight. The staff is friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu, often providing recommendations and ensuring that your dining experience is enjoyable. The speed of service is commendable, even during busy times, which adds to the overall positive dining experience. Plus, the salsa and chips delivered upon arrival are always a hit.

For those looking for a more intimate setting, Agave offers a cozy bar area, ideal for enjoying a drink and some appetizers. The outdoor seating is perfect for warmer months, providing a great spot to enjoy a meal while taking in the ambiance of downtown Fredericksburg.

The restaurant also has Tacos & Tequila Tuesdays with specials on—you guessed it—those alliterative staples. On Thursdays, they offer a special discount for active duty/retired military, teachers, nurses, and first responders, which is always a great way to give back to those community members. The only limitation I observed from Agave is its size. It is on the smaller side, so reservations are recommended for larger parties. Otherwise, your taste buds are in great hands.

We’re still hoping our schedules can sync up again, and we can head down for Happy Hour one afternoon this summer, but I’d say Agave could fit the bill for whatever dining experience you’re looking to have, be it a casual date night, lunch with a coworker, or a girls’ night out on the town.

The Importance of Bathing Suit Color in Preventing Drowning

When it comes to swim safety, one often overlooked factor is the color of bathing suits. While the style and comfort of swimwear are usually prioritized, the color can play a crucial role in enhancing visibility and preventing drowning, particularly in crowded or natural water environments. Here’s why the color of your bathing suit matters and how it can make a significant difference in water safety.

VISIBILITY IN WATER: WHY IT MATTERS

In an emergency, every second counts. Quick detection and rescue are critical to preventing drowning. A brightly colored bathing suit can significantly improve visibility in the water, making it easier for lifeguards, parents, and other swimmers to spot someone in distress. The right color can enhance contrast against the water, whether it’s a pool, lake, or ocean.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT COLORS

Different water environments require different considerations for optimal visibility. Here are some guidelines for selecting the best colors for various settings:

Pools: In clear, blue-tinted pool water, neon colors such as bright orange, yellow, or lime green are highly visible. These colors stand out against the blue background and are easily noticeable from a distance, even in crowded settings.

Lakes and Rivers: Natural bodies of water like lakes and rivers often have murky, darker water. In these conditions, bright and contrasting colors such as neon yellow, bright orange, or even white are more visible. These colors create a stark contrast against the darker surroundings, making it easier to spot someone.

Ocean and Beach: The ocean’s varying hues and potential for waves require colors that stand out under different light conditions. Bright neon colors, especially neon yellow, pink, and green, can be seen against the waves and changing water colors. Avoid colors that blend with the water, such as blues and greens, as they can make it harder to locate someone quickly.

REAL-LIFE IMPACT: CASE STUDIES AND RESEARCH

Several studies and real-life case reports have underscored the importance of bright swimwear in preventing drowning. For instance, a study conducted by Alive

Solutions, a water safety consultancy, tested various colors in different water conditions. The study found that neon colors were consistently more visible in both clear and murky water compared to darker colors like black, blue, and dark green.

In one documented case, a child wearing a bright orange swimsuit was quickly spotted and rescued after an accidental fall into a pool, while another incident involved delayed detection of a child in a blue swimsuit, emphasizing the critical role of visibility.

ADDITIONAL TIPS TO ENSURE SWIMMING SAFETY

1. Learn to Swim- One of the best ways to stay safe around water is to learn how to swim. Enroll yourself and your children in swimming lessons. Many community centers and local pools offer affordable lessons for all age groups. Knowing how to swim can prevent accidents and save lives.

2. Never Swim Alone- Always swim with a buddy. Even experienced swimmers can encounter unexpected issues such as cramps or strong currents. Having someone with you ensures that there is always someone to help in case of an emergency.

3. Follow Safety Rules- Educate your family about water safety rules such as no running near the pool, no diving in shallow water, and not swimming without permission. Consistent reminders can help reinforce these important guidelines.

4. Supervise Children Closely- Children should always be supervised by an adult when they are in or near water. Designate a responsible adult as the “water watcher” who can give their undivided attention to watching the children. Avoid distractions like reading or using a smartphone while supervising.

While selecting a brightly colored bathing suit is a crucial step, it should be part of a comprehensive approach to water safety that includes constant supervision, swimming lessons, strength in numbers, and adherence to safety rules.
