As women age, their hormone levels shift, leading to a variety of symptoms that can impact their quality of life. For many, these changes begin in their late 30s and early 40s. In a charming neighborhood in Chancellorsville, Christy Heussner and her husband, Bob, have built a life filled with creativity, family, and community. Their story began decades ago in the professional world.
“Bob and I met when he was working for Chrysler’s ad agency in Washington DC, and I was a district sales manager for Chrysler,” Christy explained. “We didn’t start dating, though, until he left the agency and took a position with an agency in Manhattan.”
Over the years, their partnership has flourished, supported by shared values and mutual admiration.
Bob’s impressive marketing career— specializing in Olympic sponsorships and corporate fundraising for nonprofits like the American Battlefield Trust—reflects his passion for history and giving back. Christy proudly speaks of him, noting the “meaningful impact he’s had in both his professional and volunteer endeavors.”
Motivated by family care needs, the couple moved to Fredericksburg from Michigan in April 2020. Christy’s mother, Doris, now 95, and her brother, Michael, 64, had both been living with Christy and Bob. Michael, affectionately known as Rocky, has Down syndrome.
“We decided to move here so that my mother could live with my sister, Sherry Koontz, and Rocky could live with us, and we could share care,” explained Christy, whose family includes two other sisters, Kathy Koontz in Oregon, and Kelly Koontz in Delaware, who come to the rescue in times of need. “We live close, so Rocky can see Mom when he likes, and he can be spoiled by his other sister, Sherry. He calls his overnight stays at Sherry’s house a ‘mini vaycay,’” Christy laughed. This thoughtful setup allows Rocky to maintain close relationships with all his loved ones while enjoying a stable and loving home environment.
Despite the challenges of moving during a global pandemic, the Heussners have embraced their new community and formed strong bonds with their neighbors, though, understandably, it was not easy at the beginning. “Our neighbors have been wonderful to Rocky and really look out for
him,” Christy said. The warmth and kindness of those around them have made Fredericksburg feel like home, and they’ve enjoyed many get-togethers since those initial days of social distancing.
Christy and Bob also appreciate the area’s rich history, with its peaceful battlefields and scenic drives. Bob and their lively cockapoo, Ted, walk the battlefields at least weekly, and Christy enjoys exploring the Wilderness Battlefield and McLaw’s Drive. “It’s so beautiful and peaceful all year round,” she says.
Christy’s connection to her family is at the heart of everything she does. Her days are filled with caring for Rocky, spending time with her mother, and maintaining close ties with her sister. These relationships are a source of joy and inspiration, grounding Christy in a life of service and creativity. Their son, Alex, a graduate of Emory University and the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, lives in Brooklyn but remains a central part of their lives.
“He’s an avid traveler and sports fan,” Christy shared proudly. Family vacations often revolve around visiting loved ones in Brooklyn, Princeton, Oregon, Michigan, and Delaware. “We have many places to see and people we love to visit,” she said, adding that one of their favorite destinations is the Outer Banks.
Christy’s creativity is a defining aspect of her life, rooted in the skills she learned as a child.
“I began to sew when I was about 6,” Christy explained. “My grandmother, Grace, sewed everything and taught me to sew when I spent summers with her.” Her grandmother gifted Christy with her “old treadle machine,” which she learned to sew on. Christy spent countless hours on that machine, sewing on it until she was well into her thirties.
“When I graduated from FIT, my mother-in-law gave me my first electric machine as a gift, and I still sew on it.”
After earning degrees from the University of Maryland and the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), Christy pursued a career in costume design and construction. She worked in the theatre department at Oakland University in Michigan for a decade, during which time she taught costume construction and mentored students.
“That experience led me to create Civil War reenactment clothing for various individuals and organizations here in Virginia,” Christy explained. Today, she also designs modern clothing for clients, blending historical techniques with contemporary fashion. She still uses that treadle machine along with hand stitching to make the authentic civil war garments for Crow Mercantile, a civil war sutler.
“My hobby is my work—lucky me,” she added with a smile. Her sewing projects are often accompanied by the cheerful presence of Ted, their five-year-old cockapoo, whom Christy describes as very much a member of the family.
The Heussners have found joy in exploring Fredericksburg’s many attractions, from its charming antique shops to its vibrant dining scene. They are frequent visitors to Riverby
Books, R&R Antiques, and Sequels Resale Boutique, and they enjoy dining at Harry’s in Harrison Crossing and Basilico. Christy and Bob also love spending summer evenings at FredNats baseball games.
“Even my 95-year-old mother loves the FredNats games!” Christy laughed. When not sewing or spending time with family, Christy enjoys quieter pursuits like reading, working on jigsaw puzzles, and gardening. “Meadows Farms is my happy place,” she said. “But my real love is clothing design and construction.”
Through it all, Christy and Bob have constructed a wonderful life here in Fredericksburg surrounded by family, friends, and the natural beauty of the area. Weekend outings often include trips to Montpelier and Castle Hill Cider, where they soak in the region’s charm and enjoy scenic drives through the countryside.
“We’ve found so much to love here—the history, the community, and the beauty of the area,” she said. With her family by her side and her creative spirit leading the way, Christy continues to weave a life that’s as vibrant and beautiful as the garments she creates.

Since its inception in 2016, Gwyneth’s Gift Foundation has educated and empowered thousands of individuals across Virginia. This nonprofit organization has been on a mission to create a “Culture of Action”— a world where everyone is equipped and confident to save lives in the event of sudden cardiac arrest.
At its core, GGF’s mission is simple yet transformative: to raise awareness of Hands-Only CPR and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). Through their programs, the foundation provides free AED placements, training sessions, and community outreach to ensure that no one hesitates when faced with a life-or-death situation.
“We believe everyone can save a hero,” shares Jennifer Griffin, President and Co-Founder of GGF. “By equipping individuals with the confidence to perform Hands-Only CPR and making AEDs accessible, we empower communities to save lives.”
The foundation’s story is deeply personal. GGF was founded in honor of Gwyneth, whose life was tragically cut short due to cardiac arrest. Her memory lives on through the foundation’s work, which has trained over 23,770 individuals, placed 146 AEDs, and saved at least 12 lives.
“Our mission is inspired by the strength that came from tragedy,” says Joel Griffin, Chairman and Co-Founder. “Gwyneth’s Law, passed in 2013, ensures Virginia high school students receive CPR
training before graduation, impacting around 80,000 students annually.”
Gwyneth’s Gift Foundation’s impact reaches far and wide, with over 70% of its training and AED placements occurring in Planning District 16.
“Sudden cardiac arrest doesn’t discriminate,” explains Veronica Gutierrez, Director of Operations and Community Engagement. “But the odds of survival improve drastically with quick action. The skills we teach can double or even triple someone’s chances of survival.”
“Last year, a student shared how CPR training helped them intervene during an emergency,” recalls Gutierrez. “Although the loved one didn’t survive, their quick actions gave the family precious time together. It’s moments like these that remind us why this work matters so much.”
Beyond its lifesaving mission, GGF fosters a sense of community through events like the annual Mom Prom. This ladies-only night out combines fun and philanthropy.
“Mom Prom is not just about dancing the night away,” says Erin Lewis, one of the Mom Prom committee members. “Every ticket sold supports our mission, allowing us to continue offering free training and AED placements.”
Scheduled for April 12 at the Fredericksburg Convention Center, this year’s theme, “A Night at the Disco,” promises a dazzling evening complete with a prom queen, surprises, and, of course, a disco dance floor. Erin Lewis, a committee member, emphasizes the joy of the event: “It’s a night to connect, laugh, and make a real difference in our community. Plus, who doesn’t love an excuse to dress up and dance?”
The foundation’s philosophy resonates deeply with its team and volunteers. “Every day is rewarding,” says Gutierrez. “When you work with like-minded, driven individuals who are committed to a common cause, there’s a sense of positivity and purpose that fuels everything we do.”
GGF encourages everyone to get involved, whether through volunteering, contributing, or attending training sessions. “Our goal is to ensure that everyone feels confident to step up and perform Hands-Only CPR when it matters most,” says Jennifer Griffin. “Together, we can grow our Culture of Action and create a heart-safe community.”

The heart is more than just a symbol of love—it’s the essential organ that pumps blood to power the body. February is Heart Month, a perfect time to focus on your pet’s heart health. By taking proactive steps, from prevention to early detection, you can help ensure your pet’s heart stays strong for years to come.
Understanding Heart Disease
Dogs and cats can suffer from various heart conditions. Mitral valve disease and dilated cardiomyopathy are common in dogs, while hypertrophic cardiomyopathy often affects cats. Heartworm disease is another significant risk. Untreated heart disease can lead to congestive heart failure (CHF), where the heart struggles to pump blood, causing fluid buildup. CHF is a medical emergency, but prompt intervention can help pets recover and maintain a good quality of life. Early detection and management can slow disease progression and may prevent CHF.
Early Detection
Recognizing heart disease early can save your pet’s life. Common signs include:
• Coughing
• Fatigue/weakness
• Difficulty breathing
• Fainting/collapse
• Swollen abdomen
Subtle changes in behavior, such as decreased energy or reluctance to exercise, may also signal a problem. If you notice any of these signs, contact your veterinarian promptly for an evaluation. Routine checkups may also reveal a heart murmur—an abnormal sound indicating turbulent blood flow. If detected, further tests like an echocardiogram may be recommended.
Preventing Heart Disease
While not all heart diseases are preventable, early detection and certain lifestyle choices can significantly reduce risk and improve outcomes.
Regular Veterinary Checkups
Routine exams, at least once a year, are crucial for early detection of heart disease. Your veterinarian may spot signs you might miss at home.
Healthy Diet and Weight Management
Obesity is a major risk factor for heart disease. Feed your pet a balanced diet with essential nutrients like taurine, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants. Avoid foods high in fat or sodium, and aim for a food that includes whole grains. Portion control is important, too. Ask your veterinarian for advice on serving sizes and weight loss if needed.
Aim for 30 minutes of low-impact exercise three times a week. Exercise strengthens the heart and helps maintain a healthy weight. It’s also an excellent way for you and your pet to stay active together!
Bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and affect the heart. Brush your pet’s teeth daily and schedule regular dental cleanings with your veterinarian.
Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes as immature larvae, which migrate to the heart and lungs, growing into adults that block blood flow and cause permanent damage. Heartworm prevention medications kill the larvae before they mature into adults. Monthly preventatives are safe, effective, and much more affordable than treating adult heartworms. Use heartworm prevention year-round, even in colder months when mosquitoes are less active but still can transmit heartworms. Be sure to have your pet tested annually to ensure they remain heartworm-free.

As we are now into February, it can begin to feel like winter is dragging on, and the highly anticipated spring couldn’t approach any slower. Especially in the Fredericksburg area, where frigid temperatures and dreary days tend to span all the way through March, it is important to take steps to maintain winter wellness. These steps don’t have to be large to make a significant impact, in fact, there are many small steps that can be taken in order to reduce the winter blues.
Even though water is not the go-to drink for most during the winter, it is very important to one’s health to ensure the consumption of an adequate amount of water daily. It is often preferred to pick up a warm coffee, or hot chocolate, but none of these other choices hold the nutritional benefit that water does, and therefore cannot be a total substitute for water. According to the Mayo Clinic, it is important to drink at least 8 cups of water each day in order to keep your body healthy and ready to fight off any germs it may encounter.
Dress Warmly
Maybe you received a beautiful sundress or a nice new pair of shorts for Christmas and can’t wait to wear them. No matter this longing, it is important to dress warmly and wear all of the adequate accessories for the entirety of winter. Dressing in layers is crucial and serves as the best protection against harsh winds. Additionally, it can be wise to limit your time in the most frigid of weather. With this, comes checking the weather forecast ahead of any outdoor activities that you may plan. Both of these measures are incredibly essential to the maintenance of one’s health, as being exposed to cold without sufficient preparedness can lead to illnesses such as pneumonia, and in severe cases, hypothermia.
Regular exercise, important to both mental and physical health, can often be halted throughout the winter months. Though the weather outdoors may not be suitable for exercise, an alternate indoor activity can be found to continue a routine throughout the winter. From running on the treadmill, to yoga, and weightlifting, and everything in between, there are countless ways to exercise that can be carried out inside. If lacking the proper motivation, there are many apps that can be downloaded to keep track of your exercise and help you to reach fitness goals, even in a modified indoor setting. And, if tracking the weather forecast, a warmer day may sneak its way in every now and then, and allow an opportunity to exercise outside for a day or two.
Overall, it is important to remember to focus on yourself during this time. This includes taking time to spend time with family and friends, time to spend alone doing things you love, and being sure to take care of your body in a proper manner. Keeping in mind the above tips, you can take your first step at kicking the winter blues out of your mind as you eagerly await spring.

These locations shed light on the vital roles African Americans played in the area’s development.
Another notable tour is the Fredericksburg Civil Rights Trail, which follows the stories and sites of the local Civil Rights movement, highlighting the role of Black residents in Fredericksburg’s history. This tour includes sites where Black individuals created educational, housing, and business opportunities during the Jim Crow era, as well as locations of protests against racial segregation in the 1950s and 1960s.

Valentine’s Day is for love and deepening connections. Understanding how love is communicated and received could revolutionize Valentine’s Day and your relationships! The five love languages, a theory founded by Dr. Gary Chapman in his book The 5 Love Languages, is the idea that people have different ways of expressing and receiving love. When implemented, this can strengthen your relationship with your partner or child and enhance their emotional well-being. Pay attention to how your loved ones show love, or ask how they like to receive love. Use this to identify the following love languages.
Words of Affirmation
People with this love language value verbal expressions of love, respect, appreciation, and compliments. For adults, phrases like “I love you,” “I appreciate you,” or “I’m blessed by you,” make them feel loved and appreciated. For your child, tell them that you love them often and that they are special to you, praise their efforts, and avoid harsh criticism.
Acts of Service
conversation, shared activities, or simply being present, can make someone with this love language feel truly connected. For your partner, this would include cooking a meal together, regular dates, or a weekend getaway. For your child, this could mean playing a game, going camping, or doing a craft together.

To make the chia jam, combine the berries, chia seeds and orange juice in a bowl and stir well. Cover and leave at room temperature for 1-2 hours or chill in the refrigerator overnight.
When ready to eat, mash the jam until smooth. Stir in the maple syrup and leave for 20-30 minutes. This recipe serves 3 and only uses half the jam, so store the remaining jam in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

Ingredients for two servings:
• 2 oz.- 100% pure cranberry juice (not the sweetened or mixed)
• 3 oz. Blanco tequila (or your tequila of choice that’s 80 proof)
• 2 oz. triple sec
• 1 1/2 oz. of fresh squeezed lime juice
Directions:
1. Pour the tequila first in your glass of choice.
2. Add the triple sec.
3. Add the cranberry juice.
4. Add simple syrup to taste (usually 1/2 oz.- 1 oz.).
5. Fresh squeezed lime juice.
6. Then shake in your favorite shaker.
7. Pour in a chilled glass (if you want some extra class ;-) ).
8. Garnish with margarita salt on the rim (the chilled glass makes it easy).
9. Toss in cranberries for a fun presentation.
*Add an extra ounce of ginger beer for a little more bubbly in your life.

Julia Pesnell is a senior at Riverbend High School. She is a student of the Commonwealth Governor’s School and serves as the Riverbend Junior Class President. Julia also runs cross country and track for the Riverbend High School team. She holds the position of committee executive for the Spanish Honor Society and is a class representative for their chapter of HOSA. Beyond her leadership roles, Julia is actively involved in community service and is a member of the National English Honor Society.
Winter sports’ seasons are still in full throttle even through the frigid weather, demonstrating the dedication of each of the athletes. Some of the teams and their successes so far are highlighted below!
Cheer
Sideline cheer is hard at work this season, keeping school spirit alive on and off the court. The program has witnessed significant growth, as they have almost doubled in size from last year. Head coach,
Heather Wells, says, “We aim to create a healthy learning environment while teaching the fundamentals before advancing our skill set. Our athletes have thrived this season, and their performances reflect their hard work.” She goes on to comment on the most impressive thing she has seen from this group of athletes, saying, “While sports can be quite competitive, these athletes encourage each other and cheer one another on, all while striving to be the best they can be.”
The girls basketball team has had a great season so far, 5-5 overall, and 2-0 in their conference. Coach Wayne Via, says, “We are working towards getting the best seed in our Conference Championship Tournament, with having the best conference record we possibly can.” The team competed in the big Chancellor Christmas tournament where they made it to the championship, losing only to Chancellor High School. However, in their regular season game against Chancellor, they fought head to head and the game was won by Riverbend by a shot at the buzzer. Varsity athlete Janiya Powell says that her favorite parts of this season so far are the “team bonding events,” and the team’s “communication and togetherness”.
Winter track is a sport for the toughest, as each of their practices, and some of their meets are held
outside. But through all of this, they have had an incredible season, with multiple athletes already qualifying for states, including the boys 4x800 team. Varsity middle-distance runner, Paloma Marcus mentions the team meets in Virginia Beach, where they have to arrive at the school to board the bus by 4:30 am, saying she is always impressed by everyone’s dedication at this moment. Marcus also says, “My favorite part of the track season so far has probably been going to Virginia Beach for a meet and then casually meeting Grant Holloway.” Grant Holloway is an Olympic gold medalist in the 110m hurdles, and certainly quite the celebrity at a high school track meet.
With many strong swimmers this year, the team is off to a fantastic start. Varsity swimmer Abbey Gardiner says, “My favorite part of the season has definitely been spending time with a lot of my friends I don’t see or have classes with in school and meeting new people I wouldn’t usually be able to in school.” She is an incredible swimmer, with big goals ahead of her this season, as she says, “My individual goal this season is to make states, but also just better my times as much as I can.” She concludes, by commenting on the team’s immense support for each other, and their willingness to constantly cheer their teammates along.

On top of being greatly anticipated, winter break is also a highly important time for students. It allows them time to relax, reflect on the school year so far, and recharge so that they can put their best foot forward coming into the second semester. With just over two weeks off from school, plenty of time is allotted for traveling, spending time with friends and family, or dabbling in newfound hobbies.
Though many students of Riverbend High School have stories to tell of their winter break, two specific RHS students made the most of staying local throughout the break! Layla Frappier and Natalie Horstick are both freshmen who have already made countless memories through their first semester in high school, and after recharging over break, are ready to get back to school and finish the school year with flying colors.
Frappier spent a bulk of her break spending quality time with her family. She says, “One of my favorite moments was doing Secret Santa with my family.” She also went to WinterFest at Kings Dominion, where she says she had so much fun, especially
being able to go ice skating. Honed on this aspect, Frappier adds, “I’ve been able to relax by spending quality time with my family and watching a show called Nashville.”
On top of all of her time spent making memories with her family, Frappier has been very focussed on her running. She is an integral athlete on the RHS cross country and distance track teams, as she has shown phenomenal talent as a freshman. Frappier says, “As I finish the school year, I also want to continue prioritizing my running and improving in that area.” She also has high academic goals for the second semester, wishing to maintain good grades, and pass her AP Human Geography exam.
Horstick also took great advantage of this year’s winter break, as she says, “Most of my break was spent hanging out with friends.” Through everything she did, one of her most memorable moments from break was going ice skating at the Haymarket Iceplex. On the note of recharging, Horstick comments, “I spent multiple days at home and sleeping in.”
After having over two weeks off Horstick was recharged and ready to take on the rest of the school year. She comments on her goals, saying, “I want to finish the school year with all A’s”.
Both of these students used this winter break in the best way: enjoying the time off, while still taking time to relax and recharge. Along with many other RHS Bears, both are sure to have a fantastic finish to their school year.

☐ 1 Empty cream jar (e.g., Nivea, Neutrogena, or Olay)
☐ Acrylic paint (white or your preferred color)
☐ Paintbrush
Instructions:
☐ Mod Podge (or craft glue)
☐ Colored tissue paper
Optional: Ribbons, beads, or other decorative items
Step 1: Clean and Prepare the Jar
☐ Wash the empty cream jar thoroughly to remove any residue.
☐ Let it dry completely before decorating.
Step 2: Paint the Jar
☐ Paint the jar and its lid with white acrylic paint (or any base color).
☐ Allow it to dry completely.
☐ Repeat this step 2–3 times to ensure even coverage.
Step 3: Prepare Tissue Paper
☐ Tear colored tissue paper into small pieces of various shapes and sizes.
Step 4: Decorate the Lid
☐ Use a paintbrush to apply Mod Podge around the lid.
☐ Carefully place the tissue paper pieces onto the lid, smoothing them down as you go.
☐ Apply another layer of Mod Podge over the tissue paper to seal it. Let it dry completely.
Step 5: Add Final Touches
☐ Decorate the jar and lid further with ribbons, beads, or other embellishments.
