FLOORS

The anticipation for the holidays is at its peak! The plans have been made. Christmas party dates are approaching, the food is catered, the decorations are perfect, and guests will soon arrive. But what about your floors? Are they holiday-ready? Don’t neglect this essential element when decorating with warmth and cozy vibes. Here is how your flooring can shine bright and create a place where you can build holiday memories to last a lifetime. Be clean and neat. Nothing will quench holiday charm like an untidy floor. Our families and pets live on our floors, but it doesn’t have to look like we do. A clean, uncluttered area is the best space to create a welcoming environment for guests. First, move furniture and thoroughly vacuum. For dingy carpets, depending on the wear and stain level, opt to either have a professional clean or replace them with a high-traffic, pet-friendly remnant. For hardwoods, dust with a damp mop and clean with a wood-friendly cleaner like Bona. Avoid excess water, steam, or abrasive cleaners on wood, as it will cause damage over time and void the manufacturer’s warranty. Polish on hardwood is not recommended due to it complicating the refinishing process. For tile, avoid any cleaning products or tools that would stain or chip the tile or loosen the grout. A mild soap with water lifts most dirt and stains, or a professional tile and grout cleaner can be used with a sponge and grout brush. The key is to be consistent with cleaning before and after the holidays

Protect hard surfaces. With more traffic coming in and out of your home during this time of year, it is important to protect hardwood and vinyl from scratches. Opt to place mats at each entryway. Remember to place protective felt pads at the bottoms of chairs, couches, and furniture. During the holidays, furniture gets moved around more frequently, and you don’t want any lingering reminders of the festivities in the form of new scratches on your floors. Sweep the floor and wipe with a microfiber mop between meals and high traffic times of the day. Scuff marks can be buffed with a soft cloth, scrubbed with a damp sponge, and buffed dry.

Include seasonal area rugs. A warm, rich area carpet brings a new holiday look to your house. Color on the floor, especially on top of earthy hardwood and vinyl, adds depth and dimension while pulling in other holiday decor from the room. Not only will area rugs help preserve your floors during high-traffic gatherings, but they will also be inviting to the eye. Consider adding an area rug to the front foyer, kitchen, hallways, and living room. Placing non-slip pads beneath decorative rugs will help prevent sliding and ensure they stay in place.

With a bit of attention and care, your floors can be the unsung heroes of your holiday decor. Clean, protected, and adorned with seasonal touches, they’ll impress your guests and provide the perfect foundation for cherished holiday moments.

WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK NK FLOORS FOR BRINGING YOU THIS MONTH'S HOME IMPROVEMENT CORNER

The Sandhu-Narayana Family’s Life in Chancellorsville Home, Heart, and Community:

For Drs. Ankur Sandhu and Avinash Narayana, life in Chancellorsville has blossomed beyond their expectations. In their close-knit community, they have built a life that reflects their dedication to family, service, and mutual support, a sentiment underscored by their love for the area’s natural beauty and rich community involvement.

Ankur, a nephrologist and former critical care physician, and Avinash, a trauma surgeon, first crossed paths over a disagreement in the ER at Henry Ford Hospital. “We met in 2009 at Henry Ford, in the ER. We disagreed with each other’s management of a patient, and the rest is history!” Ankur recalls with a laugh. That initial spark developed into a partnership grounded in shared goals and mutual respect. Today, they balance busy professional lives and a warm family dynamic with their two daughters and rescue dogs.

After years of practicing critical care, Ankur decided to step away from the intensity of hospital work to focus on her family, a move that reflects her values. “I needed to be more present for my family. I needed a better work-life balance,” she says, acknowledging the challenges that come with balancing a medical career and raising young children. Ankur’s transition has allowed her more time to engage with her daughters’ interests, volunteer in their community, and, as she puts it, “be fully there for the people who mean the most.”

Their daughters, Anika (nicknamed Ana), age 8, and Mili, age 5, are the heart of the family. Ana and Mili share a love for ballet, where they enjoy the expressive, disciplined environment of dance. But it’s in Taekwondo where they truly thrive, building skills and confidence that their parents encourage. “The girls love ballet but thrive in Taekwondo,” Ankur shares proudly. “It’s so empowering to watch them grow through it.” As they participate in these activities, the family finds additional fulfillment by giving back to the community, often through volunteer work at local animal shelters.

Their home wouldn’t be complete without their rescue dogs, Cleo and Oakley. Cleo, affectionately known as “Big Mama,” is a nurturing presence in the household. “Cleo is so nurturing and always loves cuddling with the kids,” Ankur says, sharing how all cherish Cleo’s comforting presence. The family welcomed Oakley, a puppy, from a local shelter to keep Cleo company after losing Brutus, their beloved “heart dog,” last year. Oakley’s boundless energy and loyalty have helped heal the family after their loss. “We rescued him for Cleo,” Ankur explains. “Oakley has brought a lot of joy and excitement back into our home.”

In 2016, Ankur and Avinash decided to move to Spotsylvania, drawn by the area’s supportive community, scenic surroundings, and active lifestyle opportunities. Now, eight years later,

they know they made the right choice. “There is so much to do here, with so much community support,” Ankur says. “We’re fortunate to live in such a vibrant, connected place.” From the area’s biking trails to the community’s friendly atmosphere, the Sandhu-Narayana family appreciates every aspect of their adopted home.

When asked about their favorite local spots, Ankur lights up, talking about their outings on the Rappahannock River and day trips to Shenandoah National Park. “We love doing activities on the Rappahannock River,” she shares, highlighting their love for the outdoors. Quick getaways to Shenandoah give them a chance to reset in nature, blending relaxation with adventure.

“Anything beach and mountains satisfies all our family’s needs,” Ankur explains. “Frequent breaks are needed to recharge.” These small escapes, she says, help them find balance and stay connected as a family.

Their sense of community extends to their neighborhood, where Ankur has taken an active role in local events. “I was the hydration station for our July 4th run and our community triathlon,” she recalls, sharing how she and her neighbors come together to support these events. “This tri was a great success thanks to Jeff and all of the volunteers,” she says, acknowledging the importance of community involvement. Ankur also recently launched an electrolyte supplement, Dr. Raindrop, after realizing, “we needed cleaner and better electrolyte supplements,” so she keeps finding ways to help the community.

As a couple with demanding careers, Ankur and Avinash deeply respect each other’s work and contribu -

tions. Avinash continues to work as a trauma surgeon, a role he finds fulfilling despite the long hours and high stakes. “My husband loves working in our community,” Ankur says. His commitment to patient care and trauma work reflects his dedication to making a positive difference, and it’s a source of pride for the whole family.

For the Sandhu-Narayana family, living in Spotsylvania is about more than just convenience; it’s about finding a place that matches their values of compassion, community, and wellness. Ankur describes the area as a blend of opportunities for both personal and professional fulfillment. “There are great places to bike, run, and walk,” she says, emphasizing the local amenities that support an active lifestyle. Beyond the recreational activities, she values the neighbors and friendships they have found, calling the community “a truly special place.”

Reflecting on the years since arriving in Spotsylvania, Ankur feels a deep gratitude for the community that’s helped shape her family’s life. “Living here has given us a place to grow and share in a way we didn’t expect,” she shares.

And with each season, the Sandhu-Narayanas look forward to deepening their roots in the community. Though marked by demanding careers and major life transitions, their journey has ultimately led them to a place they are proud to call home. They plan to continue their community involvement, explore more of the area’s natural beauty, and foster their daughters’ interests and talents in Spotsylvania.

GIVING BACK THIS HOLIDAY SEASON:

TIPS FOR MAKING YOUR CHARITABLE DOLLARS COUNT

The holiday season is upon us, a time for gathering with family, reflecting on our blessings, and giving back to the community. Charitable gifting during this season is a powerful way to spread goodwill and support local organizations that are making a difference right here in Fredericksburg. Whether you’re a seasoned donor or new to the world of charitable giving, here are some tips for stretching your dollar to make the biggest impact.

Donate to Causes That Mean the Most to You

Start by considering the causes that resonate most deeply with you. When you give to organizations whose missions align with your passions, your donation feels more meaningful and has a lasting impact. For animal lovers, local rescues like the Fredericksburg SPCA work tirelessly to care for abandoned pets and find them loving homes. If supporting veterans is important to you, organizations like Leashes of Valor provide critical resources by pairing veterans with service dogs to help with PTSD and other challenges. Contributing to causes you’re passionate about creates a deeper connection and ensures your gift has personal significance.

Research Local Organizations

Consider supporting charities that focus on Fredericksburg and surrounding communities, as local nonprofits often operate on smaller budgets and rely heavily on local donations. For example, the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank provides food assistance to families in need, especially during the holiday season. Similarly, Loisann’s Hope House helps families facing homelessness by providing shelter, support, and resources to rebuild lives. Researching local organizations that align with your values ensures that your gift directly benefits the people in your community.

Donate Money Over Goods (When/If Possible)

Although donating physical goods like food, clothing, or toys can be meaningful, financial contributions often go much further. Monetary donations give organizations flexibility to use funds where they’re needed most, often allowing them to buy supplies in bulk or leverage discounts. For instance, instead of donating canned goods, a cash gift to the food bank can multiply in value, enabling them to provide more meals than what you’d spend at the store. If you still want to give physical items, check with the charity to see what’s in high demand.

Give Strategically with Matched Donations

During the holidays, many companies and organizations offer matched donations, effectively doubling (or even tripling) your contribution. Check with your employer to see if they have a matching gift program or find local businesses that run holiday campaigns to support local charities. For example, some companies in the area partner with charities to match every dollar donated by their customers, allowing you to increase the impact of your gift without additional cost.

Volunteer Your Time or Expertise

Charitable giving isn’t just about money—offering your time or expertise can be equally valuable. Many nonprofits rely on volunteers, especially during the holidays, when the need for extra hands grows. Reach out to local groups to ask if they need volunteers for holiday events or support with administrative tasks. Skilled volunteerism, such as assisting with marketing or organizing fundraising events, can also be invaluable, especially for smaller organizations with limited staff.

Spread Awareness

Raising awareness is a simple but effective way to support local organizations. Share the work of your favorite nonprofits on social media, host a small holiday gathering with a charitable theme, or even start a family tradition where loved ones donate to

a cause instead of exchanging gifts. These gestures can inspire others to give and amplify the impact of local charities.

Remember Smaller, Lesser-Known Charities and Church and Community Drives

Large, well-known charities often receive a lot of attention and funding, while smaller ones sometimes go overlooked. Consider donating to lesser-known organizations that serve niche populations, like animal rescues or youth mentorship programs. Smaller nonprofits generally have fewer overhead costs, meaning that more of your donation will directly support programs and services. You can even give back by donating to a local church or community coat drive or food drive. Every little bit helps. Giving back to the Fredericksburg community not only helps those in need but also strengthens the bonds we share as neighbors. Happy holidays, and thank you for making our community a better place to live and thrive.

SAVING SMILES: A MISSION TO BRIGHTEN LIVES BEYOND CANCER

In 2017, three passionate young dental professionals—Dr. Ronald Lowe, Dr. Joseph Meluni, and Dr. Lawrence Nguyen—came together with a simple yet powerful mission: to help pediatric cancer survivors get the dental care they desperately need. What began as a heartfelt initiative has since grown into Saving Smiles Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a life-changing impact on children across the nation.

Dr. Ronald Lowe, a Fredericksburg orthodontist and co-founder of the organization, recalls the driving force behind their efforts. “When a child is diagnosed with cancer, dental health becomes less of a priority,” he explains. “The family’s focus is survival, which is completely understandable. Our goal is to help educate and financially assist these families so they can get the dental care they absolutely need.”

Cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation, can wreak havoc on a child’s oral health. From increased cavities to weakened tooth enamel, the long-term effects are often overlooked. Saving Smiles steps in to bridge this gap, working with families who may be struggling to afford dental care after a grueling battle with cancer. “We’ve helped dozens of kids since 2017,” Dr. Lowe shares, “whether it’s paying for their dental care, lifting their spirits during the holidays, or providing electric toothbrushes and education, this charity is truly for the kids.”

What makes Saving Smiles unique is its personal connection to the cause. Dr. Lowe’s journey into pediatric dental care began during his first year

of dental school, following the heartbreaking loss of a close friend to brain cancer. “Several years prior, my friend and teammate Michael Adenaike passed away from a rare form of brain cancer,” he recalls. “After seeing the emotional, physical, and financial toll cancer takes, I wanted to help in any way possible.”

This drive led him to partner with Dr. Meluni and Dr. Nguyen to launch Saving Smiles. Together, they have created a support system that not only helps children recover their smiles but also brings hope to their families during an incredibly difficult time.

“We’ve met amazing families from New York, Michigan, Virginia, and even California,” Dr. Lowe says. “Hearing their stories and learning how we helped their kids has been a truly rewarding experience.”

In addition to working directly with families, Saving Smiles collaborates with other notable organizations such as the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, Jessa’s Quest, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation to expand their reach. “We’re so grateful for the partnerships we’ve built along the way,” Dr. Lowe says. “These organizations have been instrumental in identifying families who need our support.”

Looking ahead, Dr. Lowe is excited about future initiatives, including a charity golf match slated for 2025 to raise additional funds for the organization. “The support since I moved to Virginia has been amazing,” he shares. “If you feel moved by our cause, I urge you to reach out—we’re always looking for people to help.”

Despite the serious nature of their work, the Saving Smiles team approaches their mission with positiv -

ity and hope. Reflecting on their journey, Dr. Lowe finds inspiration in their beginnings. “We were really just kids ourselves when we started this foundation,” he laughs. “Two 22-year-olds and a 23-yearold saw something wrong and wanted to help. Now, seven years later, we’re all about 30 and still just as passionate about helping kids.”

Saving Smiles may have started as a small, grassroots effort, but its impact continues to grow, one smile at a time.

PINK AND GOLD FOR THE WIN:

PINK AND GOLD FOR THE WIN:

RHS HOMECOMING TAILGATE © Best Version Media

Julia Pesnell is a senior at Riverbend High School. She is a student of the Commonwealth Governor’s School and serves as the Riverbend Junior Class President. Julia also runs cross country and track for the Riverbend High School team. She holds the position of committee executive for the Spanish Honor Society and is a class representative for their chapter of HOSA. Beyond her leadership roles, Julia is actively involved in community service and is a member of the National English Honor Society.

Each year, it is tradition for the Bears to hold a tremendous tailgate before Friday night’s homecoming football game. This is only one of the many thrilling and highly-anticipated homecoming week events and brings many Bears to the front walkway of the school.

Clubs, Honor Societies, class offices, and other school organizations set up booths filled with decorations, games, and prizes for the students. Since the homecoming game is always themed “pink-out,” each booth and student are decked out in pink and gold to raise awareness for breast and childhood cancer.

In addition, there is a contest running for the best booth, taking into account its activities and decorations. This year, the winning booth was the National Spanish Honor Society! They incorporated the perfect amount of fun inspired by Hispanic culture, and with this, they were able to take the win and bank $100 for future activities.

The organization’s communications manager, Karla Coto Sorto, explains that the booth was decorated with Mexican papel picado hand-made by the members, and the activity being played was the Peruvian El Sapo game. She says, “The booth allowed people to learn about different cultures while still having fun.”

As a senior and three-year member of the National Spanish Honor Society, Coto Sorto explains that this was the first tailgate she had ever volunteered at. She says, “My

TRANSFORM YOUR DREAM HOME

favorite part about being able to have a booth at the tailgate was thinking of ideas for decorations, activities, or games.”

From the beginning stages of planning, the officers had their minds set on having the El Sapo game. Coto Sorto commented on this endeavor, saying, “Even if we found that something was going to be difficult to create or have, our officers and sponsor were still able to come up with a solution. I loved that all of our officers worked together to bring these ideas to life!”

The premise of the game El Sapo is to toss coins towards a board with the goal of landing them in the frog’s mouth or in any of the adjacent holes. Because the purchase of a manufactured El Sapo board was out of the budget, the organization’s president got hard to work, making one from scratch. It turned out perfectly and attracted many competitive students and teachers to give their go at the coin toss, and ended up winning over the principal and administrators who selected the National Spanish Honor Society booth as the winner for this year’s tailgate.

Coto Sorto concludes by saying, “From having our booth at the tailgate, I could see the power of teamwork and creativity through the members and officers. I’m glad that I could be a part of something significant and special.”

ON PAR FOR SUCCESS: RIVERBEND HIGH SCHOOL GOLF SEASON

Golf is often overlooked, and many students forget that it is one of Riverbend High School’s many fall sports. The team and its immense success, however, deserve much more recognition. The team is rather small, and this makes it difficult to make. This means that each athlete who does make the team is very talented and embodies loads of potential.

The golf season begins in August, and they have regular practices at Fawn Lake Country Club to prepare for and improve throughout it. Senior Ben Neal says, “We are very fortunate to be able to practice at Fawn Lake Country Club, which is an extremely nice place.”

Neal explains that he has been golfing since he was just two years old and has been on the RHS for three of his four years in high school. Neal comments about the team environment: “My favorite part about being on the golf team is the team chemistry and how we all get along great.” He says, “It’s great how we can always look forward to going out and playing golf with our friends, especially when the coaches make it a very relaxing and low-stress environment.”

Another senior, Dylan Bell, adds to this, saying, “It was the best four years I could ever ask for with my friends.” Bell has only been playing for four years but is extremely talented. When asked about his experience on the team, he says, “My favorite aspect of being a part of the team was getting food together after matches.”

Reflecting on the team’s successes throughout the season, Neal says, “The most impressive thing I saw from our team this year is how we always look in the future after wins or losses and not dwell on them, knowing there will be another match to show how good we really are. And with coach Bell making the environment very relaxing, it’s super easy to do that.”

The Riverbend High School golf team ended up finishing 2nd in the district and 5th in the region, with a regional score of 306, which Neal explains is significantly lower and, therefore, better than the previous seasons. Neal concludes with a shout-out to the amazing coach, Coach Bell, saying, “On behalf of me and our whole team, I want to thank Coach Bell because without him, none of this would be possible.”

A Guide to Pluralizing Your Family Name for Holiday Cards

As the holiday season approaches, many families prepare to send out festive cards to friends and loved ones. One common question arises: how do you properly pluralize your family name?

As a former English teacher and self-proclaimed grammar nerd, I am here to save you time, mental aerobics, and help you sign-off on your holiday greeting cards.

First rule of grammar nerd club: do NOT, under any circumstances, use an apostrophe. People using apostrophes, thinking it’s making their last name plural, drives me absolutely insane.

I cringe when I see it “in the wild”-- be it at a wedding, “Congrats to the Miller’s!” or one of those engraved military signs: “Home is wherever the Army sends us- The Mendez’s.” AHHHHHHHH! I want to scream.

This issue and the use of the Oxford comma WILL be the two hills I die on. See, even ending a sentence with a preposition there doesn’t bother me as much. To save yourself some trouble and potential embarrassment, look at the simple guide below.

The Basics: How to Pluralize Your Last Name

1. If your last name doesn’t end in S, X, Z, CH, or SH, simply add an -s to the end of your name.

Examples:

• The Smith family becomes The Smiths

• The Taylor family becomes The Taylors

2. If your last name ends in S, X, Z, CH, or SH, add an -es to the end of your name.

Examples:

• The Jones family becomes The Joneses

• The Fox family becomes The Foxes.

• The Sanchez family becomes The Sanchezes

• The Finch family becomes The Finches

• The Marsh family becomes The Marshes

3. If your last name ends in a Y, the rules for regular pluralization don’t apply here! Keep the Y and simply add -s Examples:

• The Kennedy family becomes The Kennedys

• The Daly family becomes The Dalys

Again, because it bears repeating:

• Do not use an apostrophe to pluralize your last name under any circumstances. Your former English teachers will have a heart attack. Save lives, and do NOT use an apostrophe. Apostrophes are for possessives, not plurals!

Want an even easier way to do it?

If all else fails, if this is too big of a headache for you, or seeing “The Rodriguezes” makes you go cross-eyed, just say “family.”

Example: The Hardgrove Family

Class dismissed! I hope you all have a fantastic holiday season. Enjoy spreading holiday cheer however you see fit.

Taste Oil Vinegar Spice: Elevating Everyday Meals with Mediterranean Flair

With two locations in Fredericksburg and Culpeper, Taste Oil Vinegar Spice invites locals and visitors alike to experience the flavors of the Mediterranean through premium olive oils, balsamic vinegars, artisanal spices, and handcrafted olive wood products. Owner Deb Foley describes the store’s warm, rustic ambiance: “We offer an experience where customers can explore Mediterranean flavors and culinary possibilities, helping them bring a bit of artistry and health into their kitchens.”

Deb’s journey with Taste Oil Vinegar Spice began in May 2012 when she became a loyal customer. “I fell in love with the products and wanted to be a part of it,” she recalls. In 2014, she started working at the store one day a week, but her passion quickly led her to manage the store within seven months. By July 2016, Deb and her husband, Brian, took ownership of both locations, transforming her love for the products into a lifelong commitment to sharing them with her community.

The philosophy behind Taste Oil Vinegar Spice is simple yet impactful: to “sell exceptional ingredients that will elevate everyday meals.” Deb explains, “Whether cooking at home or hosting a gathering, these products bring out the natural goodness in food, turning the ordinary into something extraordinary.” This dedication to quality and simplicity in cooking reflects her belief that thoughtfully prepared food can create memorable, meaningful experiences.

One of the store’s unique features is its tasting experience. “The benefit of our store is you can sample our olive oils and balsamic vinegars,” Deb shares. This opportunity for customers to try before they buy has led to countless transformative moments. “When someone who thinks they don’t like balsamic vinegar tries ours, it’s often an eye-opening experience,” she says. “They’re surprised by the rich, complex flavors—sweet, tangy, sometimes with hints of fruit or herb—that balance perfectly without the harshness they might expect. It’s so rewarding to watch that first taste change their perspective.”

Deb’s favorite part of the day is connecting with customers and sharing her own culinary tips. “Throughout the day, we enjoy taking turns sharing our favorite products and how we use them,” she says. “Customers love hearing personal stories, and it builds a great connection.” For Deb, watching customers “light up when they taste a truly exceptional olive oil or a unique aged vinegar for the first time” reminds them of the magic that great food can bring to everyday life.

Reflecting on her role as a small business owner in Fredericksburg, Deb feels a strong sense of community. “As a group of passionate small business owners, we have the unique privilege of bringing vibrancy, character, and heart to our community,” she says. With this dedication, Taste Oil Vinegar Spice continues to be a beloved culinary destination that celebrates the artistry of food.

Step into our shop where the world’s finest olive oils and vinegars await, offering a sensory journey through the rich, diverse flavors of the Mediterranean and beyond, guided by our passionate staff, and complemented by a curated selection of culinary treasures to elevate your every dish.

A Tapestry of Tradition Across America

With the United States being a cultural hub when it comes to its population, there are countless traditions celebrated over the holiday months. Though it may be typical to immediately turn your mind to Christmas and New Year’s during the coming months, it is more than important to recognize the diverse and significant traditions that take place throughout our country.

Las Posadas

This Mexican Christmas tradition is celebrated between December 16th and 24th. This celebration recognizes the journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem for the birth of Baby Jesus by mimicking this journey. The history of this tradition spans back to religious festivals in Mexico, where a procession is held as groups play out the roles of Mary, Joseph, the innkeeper, angels, and Baby Jesus. Throughout the procession it is normal for there to be performances of both, carols and scripture readings. The tradition befalls that each night of Las Posadas the groups go to a different house, knock on the door, and sing the lines of the “Posada Song” where Joseph asks for shelter and the family in the house sing back the lines of the innkeeper, denying a room. Mass is held at the conclusion of the procession and after mass, children break a piñata in the shape of a star.

Hanukkah

Hanukkah, a Jewish holiday, falls based off of the Gregorian calendar and therefore can range from late November to early January, but always spans 8 nights. This year, Hanukkah will be celebrated from December 25 to January 2nd. The celebration confirms the ideals of Judaism and also marks the rededication of the second temple of Jerusalem. The lighting of the Menorah is the hallmark event of Hanukkah as it holds the eight candles which are lit each night. Beginning on night one, with

the lighting of the first candle, and concluding on the eighth night when all candles are lit, blessings are given as each candle is lit. This candle-lighting tradition is also supplemented by daily scripture readings and daily prayer giving thanks to God.

Kwanzaa

This holiday, in place to celebrate Black heritage and African culture, is celebrated from December 26th to January 1st. The holiday was established in 1966, during the Civil Rights Movement, with the purpose of reconnecting the African Americans in the United States with the roots of their culture. Decoration, heavily inspired by African culture, is crucial in Kwanzaa celebrations as families place significant objects including a unity cup, and one ear of corn per child, over a traditional woven mat called a mkeka. A candle-lighting ritual is then held each night, with each of the seven candles being colored to represent either African unity, the past, or the future. At the beginning of each night an adult pours juice or water into the unity cup and then pours a little onto the floor in remembrance of the ancestor’s. The cup is then passed around to the rest of the group, each taking a drink out of it as they chant harambee, meaning “let’s pull together”, seven times.

These are just a few of some of the holidays celebrated across our diverse nation. In addition to the above, the “holiday season” often kicks off with the celebration of Diwali (one of the major religious festivals in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism, that celebrates and symbolizes the victory of light over darkness), which occurred on October 31 this year, and ends with Epiphany, which is when the magi– or three wise men– visited the baby Jesus after his birth, on January 6.

No matter which holidays or traditions your family celebrates, we wish you a warm, happy holiday season!

Senior Pet Holiday Guide: Cozy Comforts and Essentials for Well-Being

Dr. Buzby’s Toe Grips are another great option, offering traction on slippery floors by fitting onto your pet’s nails. Portable ramps and stairs make it easy for pets to reach furniture, so they can stay close by.

The holiday season is all about making memories with loved ones—including our senior pets, who may need a little extra comfort as they age. Small changes in your pet’s environment and daily routine can bring them warmth, support, and joy. This winter, consider a few carefully selected gifts that cater to their changing needs, enhancing their comfort and well-being through the season and beyond.

Cozy Comfort

Start by giving your pet a comfortable resting place. Orthopedic memory foam pet beds are ideal for easing joint pain, and for giant breeds, a baby crib mattress can work wonders! If your pet feels the chill, consider a pet-safe heated blanket for soothing warmth. Alternatively, a cooling gel mat is ideal for pets that tend to overheat.

Enhanced Hygiene

Bond with your furry friend using a soft bristle brush to remove excess hair and mats while providing a gentle massage. At bathtime, place a yoga mat in the tub to prevent slips, and use waterless shampoo for convenient spot cleaning.

Older cats can benefit from a zero-entry litter box to assist with mobility issues. You can easily make one at home by cutting out an entrance from a plastic storage bin. For pets experiencing incontinence, waterproof bed liners or incontinence pads help maintain a dry and comfortable sleeping environment.

Mobility Support

Maintaining mobility is key to a senior pet’s independence. The Help ‘Em Up Harness provides support for dogs when navigating stairs or getting in and out of vehicles.

Elevated food and water bowls are also beneficial for pets with stiff joints, making mealtime more comfortable. Omega-3 and joint supplements can be a tasty way to support joint health (consult your veterinarian for brand and dosing recommendations).

Engaging the Mind

Keeping a senior pet mentally stimulated is just as important as physical comfort. Puzzle feeders turn mealtime into an engaging activity for both dogs and cats, while interactive toys keep their minds sharp without intense physical exertion. Cats will enjoy window perches or bird feeders for hours of sunny entertainment.

Soothing

Anxiety

For pets that may feel anxious, particularly during holiday gatherings, a calming pheromone diffuser can help reduce stress and a Thunder Shirt anti-anxiety vest applies gentle pressure to help pets feel secure and swaddled. ElleVet CBD Calming Treats are also worth considering; but consult your vet before introducing any new supplements.

Pampering Extras

For pets who enjoy the outdoors but may need assistance, a pet stroller lets them enjoy fresh air without tiring them out. Don’t forget cozy winter coats, sweaters, and spending quality one-on-one time to pamper your furry friend.

As you select gifts for your senior companions this season, remember: it’s the “paw-sitive” moments we share that truly make the holidays bright. Wishing you and your pets a purr-fectly joyful season filled with warmth and tail wags!

PREPARING YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE FOR THE NEW YEAR

As the year winds down, December is the perfect time to prepare your outdoor spaces for the months ahead. Whether you’re dreaming of spring blooms or ensuring your patio weathers the winter, thoughtful preparation now can save you time, effort, and money later.

Clear the Clutter: Before tackling winter prep, tidy up your outdoor spaces. Remove fallen leaves, branches, and any debris that could trap moisture and lead to mold or pests. Sweep patios and pathways to prevent slick surfaces caused by decomposing organic matter.

Protect Outdoor Furniture: Invest in quality covers to shield furniture from rain, snow, and frost. If possible, move smaller pieces into storage. For items that stay outside year-round, consider applying a weather-resistant sealant to extend their lifespan.

Tend to Your Lawn and Garden: Winter is tough on lawns, but you can give yours a head start for spring:

• Fertilize: Apply a winterizing fertilizer to nourish the roots during dormancy.

• Prune: Trim dead or damaged branches from shrubs and trees to encourage healthy growth in spring.

• Plant: December is an ideal time to plant bulbs for spring blooms or hardy shrubs that add yearround beauty.

Winterize Water Features: Drain fountains and ponds to prevent freezing damage. If you have a pump, store it indoors to avoid costly repairs. Adding a bubbler or de-icer to your pond can help protect fish and maintain water circulation.

Check Your Hardscaping: Inspect pathways, retaining walls, and patios for cracks or damage that might worsen during freezing weather. Seek professional help if a repair is needed.

Prep for Spring Projects: Use the quieter winter months to plan upgrades for your outdoor space. Whether you’re envisioning a new patio, custom fire pit, or enhanced landscaping, Artscapes can help bring your vision to life. Planning these projects now will not only give you something to look forward to but also ensure a smooth execution when the time comes.

Add Winter Touches: Don’t let the season limit your enjoyment of your outdoor space. Add a fire pit or patio heater to create a cozy gathering area. Incorporate evergreen planters or twinkling lights to maintain a festive, inviting atmosphere. These small touches can make a big difference in how you experience your outdoor space during the winter.

Make the most of your outdoor spaces so you can enjoy spending time outside, all year long!

HOPE FOR THE HURTING

AT THE HOLIDAYS

Christmas is a season of family, friends, joy, and giving. Warm memories of childhood traditions, romantic Hallmark movies, shopping for gifts, and laughter. Who doesn’t covet the warm and cozy bliss we all dream of for this season? It’s the most wonderful time of the year. But for some, the season of joy is a season of sorrow. There are those in our community who are hurting during the holidays. For some, the

Christmas dinner table has an empty chair where a loved one used to sit. Someone just found out that they have a life-threatening illness, and this very well could be one of their last Christmas holidays to enjoy. Broken relationships and distance may bring a bittersweet taste to what should be only sweetness. Depression, loneliness, loss, and struggles are real, even during the holidays. How can we help those in our community who are hurting and bring hope during this time of year?

Give of yourself. Be present. This requires nothing but showing up. Companionship eases the burden of heartache. You don’t need to say the right thing; just be available. Being around someone who cares is comforting.

Give a listening ear. Sometimes, the greatest gift while going through a trial is having someone just listen. Processing pain is not easy, and it helps to have someone there as a sounding board. You don’t have to give opinions or be a counselor; be a trusted friend, be present, patient, and listen.

Give your time. Life doesn’t stop just because someone is going through a hard time. What makes it easier is having someone to lift some of the burden. Offer your time to be there. Offer to do some grocery shopping or gift wrapping, clean the cars or house, watch the kids or pets, make a meal, help decorate their home, help write out Christmas cards, or bake Christmas cookies. Look for needs and fill them.

Include others in your joy. Life may have changed significantly for someone you know this holiday. Things may be different and uncomfortable for them. Include them and invite them to be a part of the joy and peace you will experience. Invite them to a candlelight service, visit a nativity scene or Christmas light show, and have them at your holiday party or a sit-down family meal. The same faith and wonder we remember at Christmas also offers hope to the hurting. Remind them that there are seasons to life and that you be there through them. Make someone feel unique and loved. Be a burden-bearer. There is a Hope that will heal all hurt and right all wrongs, and we remember this Hope at Christmas. Be that hope and make a difference this holiday.
