LEILA ABEL AND ONE WAY CONSTRUCTION: BUILDING A BETTER, MORE CARING COMMUNITY
BY MALLORY HARDGROVE
Leila Abel, the dynamic force behind One Way Construction Inc., has led a life marked by resilience, compassion, and a commitment to serving her community. As a nearly 55-year-old mother of two grown men, including one who serves in the military, Leila juggles her responsibilities with the same care and dedication she extends to her clients and community projects. She is also a doting pet mom, especially to her beloved Cavapoo, Hank.
“My company is small; however, that allows me to concentrate on outstanding customer service that goes above and beyond most others,” Leila shares. In addition to its female ownership in a male-dominated field, the focus on personalized service sets One Way Construction apart. Specializing in handyman-- or handywoman-- work, upgrades, remodels, and new builds, the company offers a unique, tailored approach to each project. “Yes, my customers have my personal number, and I’m available to discuss your project before, during, and after. With us, it’s personal,” she emphasizes.
Leila’s journey to becoming a Class A residential builder is as inspiring as it was challenging. After being kicked out of high school during her senior year, she earned her GED and, later, her high school diploma. “Shortly after, I became divorced and a single mother,” she recounts. The struggles were immense, from moving annually to facing homelessness. “It’s very worrisome wondering how you’re going to feed your child and where you’re going to live,” she recalls. Despite these hardships, she persevered, eventually earning a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s in Business Administration.
The origins of One Way Construction are deeply personal. “My grandfather and father had a construction business years ago called One Way Construction, where I took the name,” Leila explains. Her brother, Gary Russell Garrett II, played a pivotal role in her life, providing her with a stable place to live during her most challenging times. “My life would have been so different if my brother hadn’t provided me with an affordable, stable place to live,” she says. In honor of his memory and support, she continues to drive her business forward with the same spirit of giving back.
Leila’s commitment to community service is evident in her numerous volunteer projects. “My team recently volunteered with Simply Angels, a small volunteer organization that serves

veterans of all branches,” she notes. Additionally, she is involved with Old Dominion Humane Society, working on projects like upgrading outdoor play enclosures for resident pups. Her dedication extends to fostering for One By One Deathrow Dog Rescue, Inc. and other shelters.

Understanding many’s financial burdens, Leila strives to make her services accessible. “To help everyone, I attempt to keep our prices low; I do not mark up purchased materials,” she says. Recognizing the rising construction costs, she is exploring financing options for customers with less-than-perfect credit or those needing financial assistance.
Looking ahead, Leila dreams of addressing homelessness through establishing a nonprofit organization. “My biggest wish is to address homelessness. Realistically, I know I can’t end it,” she admits. Her vision is to offer a leg up to those in need, helping them get back on their feet and providing the stability they need to rebuild their lives.
“I would love to start a nonprofit organization (NPO) to provide temporary housing to veterans, single parents, recovering addicts, and anyone who needs a boost while trying to get or stay on track,” she shares.
Reflecting on how different her life would have been without her brother’s assistance, she hopes to honor him and his generosity by paying it forward. Her personal experience fuels her desire to create a nonprofit offering similar support to others. Leila envisions a future where her nonprofit can provide temporary housing, job training, and resources to help individuals transition to permanent housing and stable employment.
Leila Abel’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, the importance of community, and the impact one person can have through dedication and compassion. One Way Construction is not just a business but a passion project made into reality through Leila’s perseverance. As Leila herself says, “While it’s true that businesses must make money to survive, that is not my only goal.” Her true mission lies in serving others and building a better, more caring community.

A Blossoming Partnership in Fawn Lake
Lauren Jordan and Erin Reid Embrace Entrepreneurship
BY MALLORY HARDGROVE
PHOTOS BY KAREN PRESECAN PHOTOGRAPHY, COURTESY OF LAUREN JORDAN & ERIN REID
Friendship is often a foundation for any partnership, but that rings even more true regarding business. Two local friends, Lauren Jordan and Erin Reid, have combined their talents and passions to create Verdant Wellness, a flourishing business dedicated to health and well-being. Their journey, marked by shared values and complementary personalities, has brought them professional success and deepened their personal bond.

A Meeting of Hearts and Minds
Lauren Jordan and Erin Reid’s paths first crossed as neighbors, but their shared background in healthcare solidified their connection.
“Lauren and I met as neighbors and had a healthcare connection. Our kids are of similar ages, and it was just a natural connection,” Erin explained. “She [Lauren] is the extrovert, and I am the introvert, so it works well!”
This dynamic duo quickly realized they had more than just a neighborhood in common. Their friendship blossomed through their shared experiences and mutual support. Erin, a devoted mother and accomplished nurse practitioner, has built an impressive career in healthcare. She holds an RN, BSN, and MSN, and has been a Family Nurse Practitioner since 2006.
“I graduated from CSU Chico with a BSN and George Mason with an MSN,” Erin said. Her husband, Shane, owns an environmental engineering firm in downtown Fredericksburg. Their children, Grant (14), Emelia (11), and Beckett (8), are active in travel baseball and competitive dance.
Lauren’s journey to Fawn Lake began with a blind date set up by a friend in nursing school.
“Travis and I met on a blind date; a friend in nursing school set us up,” Lauren recalled. Travis, a clinical psychologist, works at Colonial Internal Medicine Associates. Lauren, who earned her Master’s from Frontier Nursing University, spent 16 years in Hampton Roads before moving to Spotsylvania five years ago. Her family includes Grace (18), Ashton (13), and Jonathan (9), who are involved in various activities, from church youth groups to golf and horseback riding
Building Verdant Wellness
The inception of Verdant Wellness was a natural extension of Erin and Lauren’s professional expertise and shared vision for holistic health. Their business caters to a variety of wellness needs, emphasizing the importance of balance in physical, mental, and emotional health.

“Starting Verdant Wellness was a dream come true. It’s not just about business; it’s about making a difference in our community,” said Erin. Lauren added, “We wanted to create a space where people can find support and resources for their health journeys, no matter where they are starting from.”
Embracing Fawn Lake and Fredericksburg
Both families have embraced the Fawn Lake lifestyle, appreciating the sense of community and the array of activities available.
“We moved here from the Virginia Beach area five years ago and fell in love with the central loca -

tion,” Lauren explained. “It’s close to Richmond and DC, and we love visiting the mountains and local historic sites.”
Erin echoed these sentiments, highlighting the area’s natural beauty and outdoor opportunities.
“I love the nature and the closeness to hiking and Shenandoah [National Park]. We go camping and fishing on local lakes often,” she said.
With its rich history and vibrant local culture, Fredericksburg has become a cherished part of their lives.

WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK JUBILATION BY SILVER COMPANIES FOR BRINGING YOU THIS MONTH’S FEATURE STORY

“My hubby and I are foodies, so we have enjoyed eating at all the non-chain places in downtown Fredericksburg, plus local breweries. We love Fahrenheit 132 and La Petite Auberge; they are some of our favorite restaurants,” Lauren noted.
The two families love to travel and explore outside of Virginia as well.
“We are in love with the Florida Keys, but my absolute favorite place is the British Virgin Islands,” Erin said.
Lauren added, “We love traveling anywhere there’s a beach! NYC, Las Vegas, and Arizona are new on our list. We also enjoy family cruises and attending golf tournaments.”
Nurturing Family and Community Ties
Erin and Lauren are deeply involved in their community, volunteering at local triathlons, participating in neighborhood swim teams, and attending golf events.
“We play as much golf as our schedule allows and have hosted supper clubs,” Lauren said. We cherish the friends we’ve made here; it’s a real sense of community.”
For Erin, balancing her love for travel with her homebody nature is key.
“I describe myself as a homebody who loves to travel. I enjoy reading, health, and taking care of others,” Erin shared. Despite her busy schedule, she makes time for her children’s activities and also works at a local family practice clinic. Their children also thrive in this supportive environment. Erin’s sons, Grant and Beckett, are passionate about travel baseball, and her daughter, Emelia, is a competitive dancer at a local studio.
“Baseball is a part of our daily lives, whether at a field or watching a game,” Erin said. All her kids are also involved in church activities. Lauren’s daughter Grace recently graduated from Riverbend High School and will attend James Madison University this fall, majoring in Business.
“Grace enjoys weightlifting and singing for church,” Lauren shared. Ashton, her middle daughter, will also attend Riverbend. She loves horseback riding and participating in the church youth group. The youngest Jonathan goes to Brock Road Elementary and enjoys golf, basketball, and sleepovers. “All my kiddos are involved in church,” Lauren said
Continued Commitment to Wellness
Lauren Jordan and Erin Reid’s partnership is a prime example of the power of friendship, shared passions, and complementary strengths. As Verdant Wellness grows, Erin and Lauren are excited about the future. Their shared commitment to health and wellness and strong family and community ties promise a bright path ahead, and they couldn’t be happier with the place they call home.

BUILDING A LOVE FOR READING WITH DOLLY PARTON’S IMAGINATION LIBRARY
BY JULIA PESNELL
Reading is both an imperative skill to develop from a young age, and a skill that sparks imagination, creativity, and kindergarten readiness. Dolly Parton recognized the importance of reading for young children in 1995, when she first founded Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
The program began small, distributing only in Parton’s home county of East Tennessee, but the growth it has seen over the past 29 years is truly astonishing. To put the growth into perspective, the first shipment of books in 1995 totalled at 1,700 books, and today, the program sends out over a million books each month, ensuring that 1 of 7 kids in the United States, who are under the age of five, are able to receive a free book monthly. Further than this, the program has now been expanded to parts of the United Kingdom, Canada, the Republic of Ireland and Australia.
Concerning the growth of the branch distributing to Spotsylvania County, since its establishment in March of 2020, it has registered almost 3,000 children. Local affiliate, Elizabeth DiDonato, who largely believes that literature is the cornerstone for early childhood development says, “A child’s brain is 90% developed in the first 2,000 days of their life.” This emphasizes the importance of early literacy for children, both in their preparation for kindergarten, and the development of their love for reading that can last a lifetime.
DiDonato continues, saying, “A child’s development is an interactive process that is not predetermined. Brains are built, not born, and the early years last forever.”

This is where Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library comes into play. This program is in place to ensure that all children have access to books, no matter their family’s financial status, and to encourage an environment within the child’s home that is conducive to reading as a family activity. DiDonato says, “The program inspires a love of reading with books, free of charge, to families, through local community partnerships.” The program aims to provide hand-selected, age-appropriate picture books to as many children as possible each month, and this number is constantly growing.

DiDonato says she urges parents to register their young children for the program because of its many benefits. She points out that if a child registers at birth, by the time they age out of the program at 5 years old, they will have received 60 different, free books.
Additionally, the technique of mailing the books to the child’s homes builds anticipation, and as DiDonato says, “The Imagination Library’s home gifting model gets children excited about owning books and inspires shared family reading by getting books directly to children at home with their names on the label.”
DiDonato goes on to say, “The benefits include improved reading skills. For example, Virginia’s fourth graders’ reading scores dropped by ten points, the biggest decline in the nation. Studies also reveal that children who start kindergarten with a higher skill set generally experience fewer grade repetitions and higher post-secondary attendance compared with those who start with weaker skills. Higher education translates to lower unemployment and higher incomes.”
Overall, the importance of literature has been proven during early childhood, and in-turn the impact that Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has is huge.
To conclude, DiDonato says, “The positive views of the program and its impacts are present regardless of the demographic characteristics of the community or its participants, and longer program participation results in more positive outcomes.”
If you, or anyone you know has a child under the age of five and would be interested in registering for the program you can sign up at https://imaginationlibrary.com or contact and affiliate at Imaginationlibrary@tabumc.org.

NAVIGATING SELF-CARE IN THE SANDWICH GENERATION: BALANCING RESPONSIBILITIES
BY BEATA ALGHABRA
The “sandwich generation” refers to those who find themselves juggling the dual responsibilities of raising children while also caring for aging parents. This group often faces unique challenges and stresses, as they strive to meet the needs of two dependent generations. The emotional toll of balancing the needs of both children and aging parents can lead to anxiety, depression, and burnout. Additionally, juggling schedules, meeting expectations and demands of our professional lives, medical appointments, school activities, and daily responsibilities can leave little time for personal rest.
For many, this role can be overwhelming and all-consuming, leading to neglect of their own well-being. However, self-care is essential, not just for personal health, but also for the ability to provide the best care for loved ones. Here are some practical tips for maintaining selfcare amidst the demands of the sandwich generation.
Tips for Effective Self-Care
1 Prioritize Your Health.
Your health is crucial in managing your caregiving responsibilities. Regular check-ups, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and physical exercise are foundational. When your body is well-cared for, you’re better equipped to handle the stresses of daily caregiving. Mental health is just as important as your physical health. Joining group discussions, taking some time to reconnect with friends, weekend getaways for some much needed self care are all important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Schedule your own health appointments just as you would for your children or parents. Treat these appointments as non-negotiable.
2 Set Boundaries.
Establishing clear boundaries can help manage the expectations of your children and aging parents. This includes setting limits on what you can reasonably do and making sure there is time for your own needs. Use a family calendar to set clear times for personal activities, family responsibilities, and rest. Communicate these boundaries clearly to everyone involved.

3 Delegate and Accept Help. You don’t have to do everything alone. Engage other family members, hire professional help, or use community resources to share the load. Create a list of tasks that others can help with, and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. Consider hiring a part-time caregiver to relieve you for certain hours of the day.
4 Stay Connected.
Social support is vital. Maintaining connections with friends and support groups can provide emotional relief and practical advice. Join a local or online support group for caregivers. Regular meetings or forums can provide a safe space to share experiences and solutions.
5 Practice Mindfulness, Relaxation Techniques, and “Me Time”.
Mindfulness practices, such as meditation, yoga, taking a walk or deep-breathing exercises, can reduce stress and improve mental clarity. Scheduling time to workout or play your favorite sport are both great ways to get into a healthy headspace and feel physically stronger to tackle your day. Scheduling time for yourself to work on a favorite project or just to catch up on the latest show you enjoy. These are also easy and simple ways to take a
moment and focus on yourself. Dedicate a few minutes each day to mindfulness exercises into your daily routine.
Professional Support and Resources
Don’t hesitate to reach out to professional home care services. These services can provide much-needed support, allowing you to focus on your family and yourself without compromising on the quality of care for your aging parents. Research local home care companies and explore services that can provide relief, such as respite care, which offers temporary relief for primary caregivers.
Prioritize Your Health
Balancing the demands of the sandwich generation is no small feat, but with strategic planning and a commitment to self-care, it is possible to navigate these responsibilities effectively. Remember, taking care of yourself is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. By prioritizing your own health and well-being, you ensure that you can continue to care for your loved ones with the energy and compassion they deserve.

EMPOWERING MOTHERS THROUGH FITNESS: A SPOTLIGHT ON S.L.A.M. QUANTICO
BY MALLORY HARDGROVE
Mommin’ ain’t easy. In the time of social media, where everyone has an opinion of what moms should be doing, how they should be parenting, and the constant barrage of unwanted criticism and critiques, it’s refreshing to find a supportive community of moms. That uplifting, fitness-focused group for many mothers, rookies and veterans alike, is Sweat Like a Mother (S.L.A.M.). Lyndsay Woods, a certified Pregnancy and Postpartum Athleticism Coach and an AFAA Group Fitness Instructor, owns and operates S.L.A.M. Quantico, finding her calling in combining her love for fitness and motherhood.
Founded in 2019, S.L.A.M. Quantico offers moms a unique and challenging total-body workout, but they also provide that elusive “village” that it takes to raise children. Lyndsay’s mission extends beyond a workout group; it’s about providing support for their members, who they fondly call their SLAMily.
“Our overarching mission is to bring women together not only as moms, but also as athletes who show their children that their bodies are the greatest instruments they will ever own,” explained Woods, who began her

S.L.A.M. journey in August 2021, when her family moved to Stafford. All of their classes are stroller-friendly, so moms can bring their tiniest offspring along to get a good sweat in without the worry, stress, and financial hardship of arranging childcare.
“We provide moms with a community of support to [not only] empower them through their fitness journey, but also through motherhood. We are so much more than ‘just a mom workout group,’” she added. “With our weekly playgroups, monthly book club and Mom’s Night Out events, family days, field trips, and charity work, we strive to create a modern-day village for our members.”
The supportive community allows moms to prioritize self-love and fitness, and they are encouraged to “come as they are” because “ALL mothers are athletes!” she emphasized. The group has become a “game-changer” for many, offering physical benefits, increased confidence, and a supportive community.
More than the physical benefits of working out, Sarah mentioned the “increased confidence” and community

relationships: “These are the women I lean on. We are all different, but there is no judgment. The workouts are meant to meet us where we are, and we are all there to support and motivate one another,” she said, adding she’s also thankful to be a part of “this amazing group and for the friendships my daughter is creating as well.”
Morgan agreed, “For me, S.L.A.M. is that little bit of self-love that I show myself every week! Being a mom is the best job I could have ever dreamed of, but unlike other jobs, you never clock out, and it’s down right HARD! Finding S.L.A.M. early on in my postpartum journey was a godsend.” She credits the group with helping her make that time “to better myself, not only physically, but mentally and emotionally.”
The variety of classes, themed events, and community engagement keep each day exciting and fun. Beyond that, others mentioned the benefits of additional relationships and friends, as Courtney explained:
“I found S.L.A.M. during a season in my life when I was struggling with loneliness and acceptance. As an adult, it is harder to find and maintain relationships. When I did the trial classes for S.L.A.M., I was immediately accepted into this amazing group and treated like a treasured friend. Everyone welcomed me into the group with open arms, and now I could not imagine my life without this wonderful group of friends.”
And that’s exactly what Lyndsay envisioned. Now, as a veteran spouse residing in Fredericksburg with two young sons, a husband, and a dog, Lyndsay finds solace, balance, and an outlet through S.L.A.M. through this

season of her life, and she hopes the group will do the same for you.
If you’re looking for a great group of friends with the added benefit of a whole-body workout, check out S.L.A.M. Quantico, or follow them on Facebook page (@ slamquantico), Instagram page (@s.l.a.m.quantico), or website (www.sweatlikeamother.com/Quantico) for more information. Lyndsay emphasized that you “do not have to be affiliated with the military to join us!” They have members with and without military affiliations who live

as far north as Woodbridge and south as Spotsylvania. She added that the classes are “created for ALL fitness levels, including the pregnant and postpartum population,” but everyone– mother or not– is welcome to join for a free trial, too. Classes are currently held at Loriella Park in Fredericksburg and Embrey Mill Park in Stafford. Join the SLAMily and experience the power of fitness, support, and camaraderie for yourself.

ACE THE SCHOOL YEAR: BACK-TO-SCHOOL ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL YEAR
BY JULIA PESNELL
Julia Pesnell is a rising senior at Riverbend High School. She is a student of the Commonwealth Governor’s School and serves as the Riverbend Junior Class President. Julia also runs cross country and track for the Riverbend High School team. She holds the position of committee executive for the Spanish Honor Society and is a class representative for their chapter of HOSA. Beyond her leadership roles, Julia is actively involved in community service and is a member of the National English Honor Society.
The transition back to school after summer break can be pretty bumpy. Re-perfecting your sleep schedule and ramping back up the workload can be challenging, as the relaxing summer has abruptly ended. Create a homework space and routine. Creating a homework space that minimizes distraction is crucial to at-home productivity. Finding a quiet space allows you to focus and maximize your time. Understandably, your homework routine may differ daily depending on your schedule. Still, it is essential to stick, at least loosely, to a schedule to maximize productivity. Whether coming home from school to work on homework or laying aside time right after dinner, allotting enough time for your work is vital to ensure you aren’t stuck cramming at the last minute.
Get involved.
Whether your interest lies in music, art, or athletics, getting involved is highly important. It not only gives you a community of people with similar interests who will always root for you, but it also will give you something to look forward to during the school year. The school day can be challenging, but having an extracurricular to look forward to can make the school day go by quicker and smoother. These extracurriculars are often where deep friendships can be built, and some of your most essential qualities can be developed.
Make at least one friend in each class.
Especially for middle and high school students who have several different class periods per day, it can be challenging if you don’t have any classes with your best friends. However, this does allow you to make new friends in classes where you previously didn’t know anybody. Striking up a conversation with the person to your left or right, a lab partner, or someone at lunch, can spark a friendship that could grow stronger than you may have ever imagined. Plus, having a friend in each class gives you someone to work on group projects with, someone to look forward to seeing during each day, and just an overall ally in that class setting.

Prepare the night before.
Preparing everything you need for the following school day the night before will help you sleep peacefully and allow the morning to run smoothly. Packing your lunch the night before, putting all your supplies in your backpack, and picking out your outfit can be good ideas so you can sleep a few extra minutes and aren’t rushed the next morning.
Create and stick to a bedtime routine.
No matter how much homework you may need to get done, how many chapters you want to read, or what episodes you want to watch, it is important to prioritize sleep. As students’ sleep schedules often get thrown off during the summer months, it is important to begin regulating the sleep schedule a

couple of weeks before the first day of school to minimize the chances of complete exhaustion bestowing upon you.
No matter how intimidating the new school year may seem, remember that you’ve got this and have countless people around you cheering you on. By following the above advice, we hope you will have a rather seamless and successful school year!

Their most significant task was a kids camp that they held on July 8th, 10th, and 12th for elementary and middle school students.
The RHS athletes planned the camp this year; as rising senior and varsity athlete Hailey Gass explains, “This year, some of our upcoming seniors, including myself, have planned and organized the camp.”
She continues, saying that head coach Rebbecca Williams gave them this task because “Our coach wants us to be a leader on and off the field so that we can be a great team this year and gain some life skills out of our time on the team with her. “This camp also serves as a large fundraiser for the team, as they plan to use the funds to purchase new equipment. The camp aims to introduce younger players to the basics and help them develop these skills. Gass says, “Most importantly, we are excited to give the campers a place to have fun this summer.”
Between the camp and summer conditioning officially beginning in July, these girls had a hectic summer, as they have worked hard leading up to tryouts the first week of August. The work ethic and natural talent shown by this team are monumental and have truly set them up for a remarkable season with a powerful group of girls.
Cheer
The cheer team holds tryouts before the end of the school year, so the group works hard during the summer to develop the new team’s skills.
So far, the team has held a car wash, which turned out to be a large success, as they were working to raise money for new uniforms. The cheerleaders donated supplies for the car wash and volunteered to cheer on the side of the road, invite cars to get their cars washed and clean them.
Rising senior and varsity cheerleader Jailin McCauley says, “It’s all based on donations, so we never ask for any specific amount of money. Anything we ever get is always appreciated, and we’re always so grateful for the community’s giving back to our program!”
In July, the team had the opportunity to go to UCA camp, where they stayed for three days to learn new skills. Rising junior and varsity cheerleader Bebe Blalock says, “UCA cheer camp is when many cheer teams from different schools come together and learn new chants, dances, and stunts from professional UCA cheerleaders.” Blalock continues about some fun aspects of the camp, saying, “We compete for awards each day for who has the best spirit!”
At the end of July, the team wrapped up the summer months nicely with a kids’ cheer camp hosted by the RHS cheerleaders. The team uses this as a fundraiser and teaches some of its techniques to younger children. The camp was open to Kindergarten to 5thgrade students, who were separated by grade into a cheer routine that they performed for their parents at the conclusion of the camp. Additionally, Blalock says, “The kids can also come and cheer at one of the varsity football games.”
In addition to all these activities, the cheer team practices three days a week throughout the summer. By the time the official season and competitions begin, these girls will be more than prepared.

WHY EVERY HOUSE NEEDS LANDSCAPE LIGHTING
BY PAUL GARDNER

In the realm of home improvement, landscape lighting is often overlooked. Yet, it’s one of the most impactful investments you can make for your property. At Ignite Illumination, we believe every house deserves the transformative power of well-designed outdoor lighting. Here’s why landscape lighting is not just a luxury but a necessity for every home.
Enhancing Curb Appeal
First impressions matter, and your home’s exterior is the first thing people see. Landscape lighting dramatically enhances the curb appeal of your property. Strategically placed lights can highlight architectural features, garden landscapes, and pathways, making your home stand out in the neighborhood. A well-lit house exudes warmth and hospitality, creating a welcoming ambiance that speaks volumes about your personal style and attention to detail.
Improving Security and Safety
One of the most significant benefits of landscape lighting is improving security and safety. A well-lit exterior deters potential intruders by eliminating dark areas where they might hide. Pathway lights, spotlights, and motion sensor lights can illuminate all the vulnerable points around your property, providing peace of mind. Additionally, landscape lighting ensures safe navigation around your home, reducing the risk of trips and falls, especially on steps and uneven paths.
Extending Outdoor Living Spaces
Your outdoor space is an extension of your home, and landscape lighting allows you to enjoy it well into the evening. Whether you have a patio, deck, garden, or pool area, lighting can create a magical atmosphere for entertaining guests or relaxing with family. It extends the usability of your outdoor areas, making them perfect for hosting dinner parties, barbeques, or simply enjoying a quiet night under the stars.
Highlighting Landscaping and Architectural Features
Proper lighting can showcase the beauty of your home’s landscaping and architectural elements. Uplighting can highlight trees, shrubs, and sculptures, while downlighting can emphasize garden beds and water features. Accent lighting can reveal the textures of stone walls or the intricate details of your home’s

facade. This enhances the visual appeal of your property and allows you to appreciate the beauty of your landscape at all hours.
Increasing Property Value
Investing in landscape lighting can increase the value of your home. Potential buyers often view a well-lit exterior as a sign of a well-maintained property. It adds to the overall aesthetic appeal and functionality, making your home more attractive on the market. In many cases, the return on investment for landscape lighting is significant, as it combines beauty, security, and practicality.
Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings
Modern landscape lighting solutions are incredibly energy-efficient. With the advent of LED technology, homeowners can enjoy beautifully lit exteriors without significantly increasing energy bills. LED lights consume less power and have a longer lifespan than traditional bulbs, resulting in cost savings over time.
Personalization and Creativity
Landscape lighting offers endless opportunities for personalization and creativity. With various lighting styles, colors, and fixtures available, you can create a unique look that reflects your personality and complements your home’s design. The possibilities are limitless, from soft, ambient lighting to vibrant, dramatic effects. Like those at Ignite Illumination, professional lighting designers can help you develop a customized plan that enhances your property’s best features.
Embrace the Brilliance of Landscape Lighting
Landscape lighting is an essential element of modern home design. It goes beyond mere aesthetics, offering practical benefits like enhanced security, increased property value, and extended outdoor usability. At Ignite Illumination, we specialize in creating tailored lighting solutions that transform your property into a beautifully illuminated haven. Embrace the brilliance of landscape lighting and experience the difference it makes to your home.

HEART-CENTERED ACADEMY: CULTIVATING CONFIDENCE
AND COMMUNITY
BY MALLORY HARDGROVE

Established in 2023, Heart-Centered Academy has become more than just an educational institution; it has become synonymous with hope, offering support for students and their families. This faith-based, non-profit learning center, led by Executive Director Melissa Coleman, offers a unique blend of individualized and small-group support tailored to meet the diverse needs of children from elementary to high school.

“We offer services such as formal and informal testing, ADHD support, academic support, consultation, and advocacy,” Melissa explained. Heart-Centered Academy provides a safe and nurturing environment where children can thrive.
“We are blessed to have providers come to Heart-Centered Academy to ensure our students’ needs are met.”
Melissa shared her journey and the philosophy that underpins the academy.
“In mid-August 2023, God called upon me to open my own facility after years of revamping and starting up different programs in various school systems,” Melissa recalled. “After sharing my testimony as a former special education teacher and a parent of a child with disabilities, the community came together and wanted to help get the building ready to accept students. Fast forward eight weeks from that day in August, we not only had a building to accept students but also opened our doors and welcomed students, their families, and our supporting providers.”
Heart-Centered Academy now has a speech pathologist, a clinical psychologist, and two therapy dogs who come to the academy and comprehensively support students’ needs.
A key element of Heart-Centered Academy’s success is its emphasis on evidence-based teaching strategies tailored to each student’s unique learning needs. This individualized approach ensures that no two sessions are exactly alike.
“We teach students how they learn to ensure they can be independent and successful learners,” Melissa said, and further explained the academy’s philosophy: “We are committed to providing a positive, safe, faith-focused, and stimulating environment for children to learn, where all are valued. We intend that all children should have a love for learning, achieve their potential, and become independent life-long learners.”
The academy’s impact is palpable, with 16 regularly attending students and countless families benefiting from its consultation, advocacy, and testing services. Additionally, Heart-Centered Academy partnered with a local middle school last year, serving 102 students once a week for about eight to nine weeks.
“Our numbers continue to grow for our small yet mighty center,” Melissa proudly stated. Melissa’s inspiration for her work stems from a deep-seated faith and a profound commitment to serving others.
“First and foremost, God is my inspiration,” she shared. “I am inspired by the families we serve and the community who have poured their hearts into us. I have seen the many sides of public and private school education. There is no perfect system, but I do believe that teachers are doing their best to meet the various needs of their students in large classroom sizes. Knowing the budget and resource challenges, Heart-Centered Academy supports not only families but also schools and their teachers.”
The joy and fulfillment Melissa derives from her work are evident in her energy and passion for the academy’s daily operations. “My enthusiasm for coming to work every day comes from seeing the success of our students, the boost in their confidence, and knowing that families have a safe place to turn to,” she said.
Heart-Centered Academy is not just a place for academic growth but also a hub for community engagement and fun. The academy hosts monthly events for its students, such as stuffed animal sleepovers, camping nights, movie nights, an upcoming music night, and an end-of-summer kickoff celebration. “We invite talent from our community to make the events memorable,” Melissa mentioned.
One of the academy’s core philosophies is building confidence in its students. “Students who come to us know they are struggling and quietly seek acceptance and understanding—behavior is communication. Our students know we know how they learn, and it’s okay; in fact, it’s awesome,” Melissa emphasized. This supportive and affirming environment helps students flourish both academically and personally.
Her commitment to her family matches Melissa’s dedication to Heart-Centered Academy. She is a mother of two boys, Bradley (12) and Benny (10), and is supported by her amazing husband, John. Together, they enjoy farming, baseball, and spending time with friends. Looking ahead, Heart-Centered Academy continues to seek ways to expand its reach and support within the community. Melissa encourages community members to visit the academy’s website at heartcenteredacademy.org for more information and to consider donating children’s books for their lending library. She also expressed her gratitude for the Fredericksburg community.
“It is a blessing— to say the least— as to how amazing our community is in supporting and uplifting one another.”
With help from the community, Heart-Centered Academy continues to thrive, making a lasting impact on its learners, fostering a love for learning, and building confidence in its students.

like chasing laser pointers or feather toys. Some cats even enjoy supervised outdoor exploration on a harness and leash.
Create a Safe Haven
The hustle and bustle of the school year can overwhelm pets. Designate a quiet, comfortable space to retreat to when pets need solitude. Include favorite toys and a cozy bed, and use a pheromone diffuser, such as Feliway (cats) and Adaptil (dogs), to promote calmness and reduce anxiety. Secure trash bins and remove potential hazards to pet-proof the environment and prevent accidents or ingestion of harmful substances.
Stimulate Their Minds
Combat boredom by introducing stimulating activities that challenge problem-solving skills. Treat-dispensing toys and puzzle feeders keep pets engaged, especially when home alone. In your absence, play soothing music or an animal-themed show for auditory stimulation.
Healthy Eating and Hydration
Proper nutrition is fundamental for everyone’s health! Feed pets high-quality food appropriate for their age, size, and breed—ask your veterinarian for recommendations tailored to your pet’s specific needs. Avoid table scraps and toxic foods, like xylitol (artificial sweetener), chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, grapes, and onions. Be sure your pet always has access to clean, fresh water to stay hydrated.
Schedule A Health Check-Up
BY DR. KATRINA SPIES, DVM, COMFORT PAWS, LLC
As families gear up for the new school year, it’s crucial to remember our furry companions who also feel the impact of changing routines. Our beloved dogs and cats experience stress during this transition, making it essential to consider their well-being alongside our own preparations.
Establish New Routines
Just like children, pets thrive on routine. Establish a consistent schedule for feeding, bathroom breaks, walks, playtime, and bedtime to provide stability and a sense of security. Predictability alleviates anxiety and smooths the transition to the new schedule.
Prioritize Exercise and Socialization
Regular exercise and social interaction are vital for physical and emotional health and preventing obesity and destructive behaviors. Dogs need daily walks and play sessions that stimulate their minds and bodies. When appropriate, consider arranging supervised playdates with other dogs.
Cats need physical activity, too! To satisfy their natural instincts, provide climbing structures, scratching posts, interactive toys, and activities that mimic hunting,

An annual physical exam with your veterinarian, along with vaccinations, preventive care for parasites, and routine screenings, are crucial for preventing and detecting health issues early on. Discuss concerns with your veterinarian and follow through with recommendations for maintaining your pet’s health.
As you prepare for the upcoming school year, remember to prioritize your pets’ needs as well. By incorporating these tips into your routine, you can create a smooth transition and foster happiness and well-being throughout the year. Here’s to a successful school year for all members of your family— two- and four-legged alike!
