Magical Christmas:

Nine Nights of Posadas

In North San Diego County, many people have a posada in the days leading up to Christmas. But this celebration spans nine nights in the countries where the tradition was born.

The traditional Posadas are held from December 16 to 24. On the one hand, they represent the nine months leading up to the birth of Christ; on the other hand, they symbolize the Virgin Mary and her husband Joseph’s voyage from Nazareth to Bethlehem, in response to the order given to the inhabitants of Judea to register the census in their cities of birth. Joseph was a native of Bethlehem. Along the

way, they had to find lodgings, or “posadas.”

Today, people get very excited for this magical celebration. Neighbors get together and go for a walk around the neighborhood. They stop at the front door of one of the homes along the way. When they reach their destination (the neighbors’ home), they ask for “shelter at the inn”, singing “In the name of heaven, we ask you for a room, for my beloved wife can walk no farther…”

The pilgrims and the homeowners then take part in a sung conversation, and the homeowners eventually let the pilgrim neighbors into their home.

A Catholic Tradition

The Posadas are a part of the Christmas season in Catholic households. Each country may have its own variation, so the origin of the homeowners plays a role in how they are celebrated. People usually include traditional aspects from their home countries. Christmas came to Mexico when Hernan Cortes reached the coast of Veracruz in 1519, along with the first evangelizers, who used theater as a teaching tool in their mission work. The plays were put on in the patio next to the chapel.

In the 17th century, villancicos were born in New Spain. They were musical poems sung during mass and were mixed in with the Psalms. Piñatas, which are never lacking at Mexican celebrations, come from Italy, where on the first days of lent a large clay pot was broken. When the tradition reached Mexico, colored paper was added. Over time, piñatas have gone through more changes. While trying to hit the piñata with a stick, the children hear the others sing: Hit the piñata, try not to miss, because if you miss, you lose your chance. Hit it once. Hit it twice. Three times now, and your time is up.

Posadas in Oaxaca

In December, the capital of the Mexican state of Oaxaca is one big fiesta. All month

long, there are cultural and social events held in the downtown area. They are days of color, music, and religion. Some celebrations include the one for the Virgin of Juquila, on December 8; the one for the Patron Saint of Oaxaca, the Virgin of Soledad, on the 18; the Radish Festival, on the 23; and the Posadas, from December 16 to 24. These joyful, colorful celebrations are also a way for the seven regions in the state to showcase their amazing folklore.

Part of the tradition includes drinking hot chocolate and eating buñuelos as the children try to break the piñata, which usually represents the Star of Bethlehem that guided the Wise Men. Tasty treats are also shared, as everyone sings: Dear friends, please hurry with the candy, fruit, and nuts…

Las nueve noches de las Posadas

En el Norte de San Diego, muchas personas celebran una posada en los días anteriores a la Navidad. Pero este festejo suele darse a lo largo de nueve noches en sus países de origen.

Las tradicionales Posadas se celebran del 16 al 24 de diciembre. Por un lado, las Posadas representan los nueve meses antes del nacimiento del Redentor y, por otro lado, simbolizan el recorrido de la Virgen María y su esposo José al salir de Nazaret para cumplir con la orden dada a los habitantes de Judea de empadronarse en sus ciudades de origen. José era descendiente

Hoy, estas festividades tienen la magia de despertar entusiasmo en los corazones. Los vecinos se reúnen y salen a hacer un recorrido por los vecindarios; se detienen frente a las puertas de los hogares donde ya se les espera. Al llegar a su destino (la casa de los vecinos), piden posada, al cantar, “En el nombre del cielo, os pido posada, pues no puede andar mi esposa amada…”,

Esto da lugar a un diálogo cantado entre los peregrinos y los dueños de casa, quienes finalmente permiten el ingreso.

Fiesta católica

Las Posadas son parte inherente de la celebración navideña en los hogares católicos. En algunos casos, se dan ciertas variaciones según del país de origen de los dueños de casa, quienes engalanan la celebración con aspectos tradicionales de sus países.

La celebración de la Navidad llegó a México en el mismo navío en el que Cortés arribó a las costas de Veracruz en 1519, con los primeros evangelizadores, quienes utilizaron el teatro como uno

de los recursos didácticos en su proceso misional. Las representaciones tenían lugar en los atrios, frente a las capillas abiertas.

En el siglo XVII, nació en la Nueva España el villancico, una forma musical que se ejecutaba en los actos litúrgicos, donde se entremezclaban con los salmos.

Las piñatas, que son indispensables en toda celebración mexicana, se originaron en Italia, donde los primeros días de cuaresma se rompía una olla de barro. Al llegar a México, se les vistió con papel de colores. Con el paso de los siglos, su forma fue modificándose.

Al intentar pegar la piñata, los niños escuchan a los demás cantar:

Dale, dale, dale, no pierdas el tino, Porque si lo pierdes, pierdes el camino. Ya le diste una, ya le diste dos, ya le diste tres y tu tiempo se acabó.

Las Posadas en Oaxaca

En diciembre, la ciudad capital de Oaxaca se viste de fiesta.

Desde los primeros días del mes, el centro de se convierte en el eje de las actividades culturales y sociales de sus habitantes. Son días de color, música y religiosidad. Algunas celebraciones incluyen la de la Virgen de Juquila, elw 8 de diciembre; de la Patrona de Oaxaca, la Virgen de la Soledad, el 18; la del Festival del Rábano, la noche del 23; y las Posadas, del 16 al 24 de diciembre. Estas celebraciones, llenas de regocijo y colorido, sirven como vínculo para que también se exprese el prodigioso folklore de las siete regiones que componen el estado.

Como parte de la costumbre, se sirve chocolate caliente, acompañado de buñuelos, mientras los pequeños participan en el rito de romper la piñata, que por lo general representa la Estrella de Belén que guió a los Reyes Magos. Se reparte también la colación o aguinaldos, mientras grandes y chicos cantan: Ande madrina, no se dilate con los confites y los cacahuates…

Covered California: You Can Get Health Insurance

If your employer does not offer you health insurance and you don’t qualify for Medi-Cal, you can still get covered.

On March 23, 2010, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was signed into law, making it possible for millions of Americans to get health coverage from private insurers.

Under the ACA, subsidies help you pay only a percentage of your household’s annual income for coverage. The less you earn, the less you have to pay. If your annual income falls below the poverty line, you can get this coverage and make no payments.

These programs are also for people who cannot get what is called “minimal essential” health coverage through an employer. If you are one of the roughly 50% of Americans who do not get affordable coverage through your job, you can take advantage of the ACA.

But you must apply by January 31. Read on to find out how.

How Does It Work?

If you live in the state of California, you can be one of 1.7 million people who have health insurance through Covered California, the state’s version of the ACA. But sometimes getting a plan can be confusing. There are only certain times of the year that you can sign up. That time is now through January 31.

To find out if you are eligible for Covered California or for Medi-Cal, you can visit coveredca.com. You can navigate the site or talk to representatives in English or Spanish. You will enter your household income, ZIP code, and other data, and you can find out if you qualify. You can also buy insurance from participating medical plans at Covered California even if you do not qualify for financial help. If you buy coverage this

way, it may cost less than if you buy it directly from health providers.

When visiting the Covered California website or calling the service line, you can check the different plans offered and choose the one that is best for you. You can also compare the available plans.

Before you choose a plan, you will provide information about the income and employment of each person in your household, proof of legal residency or a social security number, your contact information, your ZIP code, the names of the head of household and dependents listed on your tax return, and employer health insurance anyone in the household may have.

After you sign up, the insurance company you choose will contact you directly through the mail about your coverage. You will pay the insurance provider a monthly premium directly, or if you qualify for Medi-Cal, you will receive information from your county Medi-Cal office.

If any of your personal information changes, including income and ZIP

code, you must report it on the Covered California site or by calling.

Rules to Remember

You must register for Covered California by January 31, 2023. Californians have extra time to sign up, since people in most states must sign up by January 15.

If you wait until after January 31, you can only sign up if you lose your current health insurance or have a major life change, such as having a baby. So, don’t forget to sign up by January 31!

Also, unless you qualify for MediCal, don’t forget to pay your monthly premiums to your private provider. You do not pay Covered California directly. Even though you may pay less thanks to your subsidies, you still have to pay the amount determined by your income or you will lose your coverage.

Provide proof of income to Covered California. The easiest way is to upload your income tax return to the Covered California website by June 30.

If you already have Covered California, it will automatically renew for 2023, but

you should update your information. If you receive too much in aid, you will have to pay it back with your taxes.

You Must Have Health Coverage

Since January 2020, you must have health coverage if you live in California.

If you do not have any, you will be charged a fine when you file your tax return. The penalty for 2022 is at least $850 per adult and $425 for each dependent under 18 in your household. A family of four with no insurance could pay more than $2550 in fines. If you do not make enough money to file taxes, you will not be fined for not having coverage.

Remember that having health coverage means you can afford to take care of yourself and your family if you get sick, need surgery, or have an accident.

Undocumented Immigrants

If you are not a legal resident, you cannot get health insurance through Covered California, but you can get Medi-Cal if you are younger than 26, are 50 or older, are a DACA recipient, or are pregnant or were recently pregnant. You can also buy private health insurance on your own. If your child is a citizen and you are not, you can get Covered California for your child without affecting your immigration status in any way.

Covered California: Usted puede contar con seguro médico

Si su empleador no le ofrece seguro médico y usted no califica para Medi-Cal, aún puede obtener cobertura.

El 23 de marzo de 2010, se promulgó la Ley del Cuidado de Salud a Bajo Precio (ACA), que hace posible que millones de estadounidenses obtengan cobertura médica de aseguradoras privadas.

También puede comprar un seguro de salud privado por su cuenta. Si tiene un hijo/a que es ciudadano/a y usted no lo es, puede obtener Covered California para su hijo sin afectar su estatus migratorio de ninguna manera.

The Mariachis Are Coming!

Everyspring for the past 8 years, Route 78 Rotary Club has brought together traditional Mariachi music and the splendor of Folkloric Dance at the Mariachi Festival.

In 2023, the Mariachi Festival begins with a pre-concert VIP “Tacos & Tequila” event from 12:00 to 2:30 p.m., complete with tacos, tequila tasting, and a Silent Auction. The concert follows at 3:00 in the Concert Hall.

Rotary is welcoming back the Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea, who have been nominated for numerous Grammys and have won two. They just released their 16th album in celebration of their 21st anniversary.

Also returning with traditional folkloric dance for the 9th consecutive year is Tierra Caliente Academy, directed by club member José Jaimes. The group performs regularly at the Center for the Arts.

Proceeds benefit educational and charitable organizations, youth leadership programs, scholarships, medical clinics, food for North County families, and polio eradication around the world.

Route 78 Rotary is a regional Hispanic-affiliated club; many of its members are bilingual. Ticket prices are kept low so that all can enjoy.

The club is currently welcoming sponsors for this event.

¡Ya llegan los Mariachis!

Por Corie de Anda, Presidente, Route 78 Rotary Cada primavera desde hace ocho años, el Club Rotario Ruta 78 reúne la música mariachi tradicional y la belleza del ballet folklórico en el Festival del Mariachi.

En 2023, el Festival de Mariachi empieza con el evento “VIP Tacos y Tequila”, de 12:00 a 2:30 p.m. Habrá tacos, tequila y una subasta silenciosa. El concierto seguirá a las 3:00, en el auditorio principal.

El Club Rotario ha invitado a las Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea. Este conjunto ha sido nominado varias veces para el premio Grammy y ha ganado dos veces. Acaba de emitir su decimosexto álbum en celebración de su 21 aniversario.

Se presentará también por noveno año la academia de baile folklórico Tierra Caliente, dirigida por el miembro del club José Jaimes. Tierra Caliente se presenta regularmente en el Centro de Arte.

Lo recaudado será donado a organizaciones educacionales y sin fines de lucro, programas de liderazgo para jóvenes, becas, clínicas, alimentos para familias de la región y la erradicación de polio a nivel mundial.

El club mantiene los boletos a un precio alcanzable para que toda la comunidad pueda disfrutar el festival.

At the Heart of Care

Tri-City Medical Center is located, “at the heart of where Oceanside, Carlsbad, and Vista merge,” said Aaron Byzak, Chief External Affairs Officer at Tri-City Medical Center.

It was built in Oceanside in 1961, and today it has 386 licensed beds in the North County, said Byzak. “We have grown up as an organization providing services for this community.” Partnerships also allow for patients from San Marcos, Fallbrook, and others.

The hospital boasts a very diverse staff and is involved in “local workforce development and education,” said Byzak. “We want people to come work for us from our own communities, from all across our community.”

Byzak noted that Tri-City focuses on nurturing academic success in the region because, “if you can follow somebody’s academic progress, or lack of academic progress, you can fairly easily predict what their health outcomes are going to be later on in life.”

He said that Tri-City backs partnerships “to elevate academic performance, to elevate access to education, to elevate access to care” by being involved in the community and helping people navigate the complicated health system. “Because we know that if we are able to do that over time, as we look down the road, we’re going to see people that have better health outcomes,” he said.
