NEW DELHI, FEB 11 (AGENCIES): India’s electricity demand rose 3.52 per cent in January, government data showed on Tuesday, marking the first increase after five straight months of decline. January demand for electricity rose to 105.29 billion units from 101.71 billion units a year earlier, data from the Central Electricity Authority showed. India’s annual electricity demand in 2019 grew at its slowest pace in six years, amid a broader economic slowdown that led to a drop in sales of everything from cars to food products and also has led to factories cutting jobs.

The Indian currency finally settled at 71.28, higher by 2 paise against its previous close. The domestic unit had settled at 71.30 against the American currency on Monday. “Expectation is that inflation could inch higher and the same time IIP could witness slower growth. Weaker-than-expected number could keep the currency under pressure. We expect the USD/INR (Spot) to quote in the range of 71.25 and 71.80,” said Gaurang Somaiyaa, Forex & Bullion Analyst, Motilal Oswal Financial Services.

The programme ended with the speech by NPF Zünheboto division president Akavi Sumi and benediction by Vikali. PHEK: NPF Phek division also organised a peaceful sit-in protest against CAA at Phek town. Addressing the meeting, NPF central working president, Thenucho Tunyi, said that as a Christian state “we should oppose CAA which is against the principle of religious rights.” He said that the entry of illegal immigrants into the state cannot be stopped or guaranteed by the Inner Line Permit. Though ILP had been in force, Thenucho said no successive government could implement it effectively. He, therefore, called upon Nagas to oppose CAA. Thenucho alleged that it was the policy of BJP to impose “one nation, one re-

Delivering opening remarks, ex-MLA Dr K.C Nihoshe Yepthomi, who is also the NPF senior vice president and COB Zünheboto in-charge, highlighted about CAA and said the Act would do injustice to the northeast region and indigenous minorities. Also, speaking at the rally, Vilika representing STH Zünheboto appealed to every right thinking citizen to oppose the Act. She said the stance of STH Zünheboto against CAA was loud and clear. Speaking at the protest site, NPF central vice president Tsumongo Ovung expressed dismay over the amended Citizenship Act and affirmed that NPF would continue to oppose it. He also called upon all right thinking citizens and organizations to oppose the CAA. Dr. Chumben Murry MLA explained that ILP and Article 371 (A) cannot protect the state once the law is implemented. He, therefore, called upon the gathering to stand up and oppose the CAA unconditionally. He said CAA posed a bigger threat to the younger generation. To educate the people about CAA, the NPF Wokha unit circulated writeup concerning party’s stand on CAA in Lotha language. Party workers and participants shouted anti-CAA slogans and held placards opposing CAA. KIPHIRE: Joining the party workers across the state, NPF Kiphire division staged a sit-in protest against CAA at Delux Point, Kiphire town Tuesday. year beginning in April, compared with estimated growth of 5.0% in the current one. But many private economists are less optimistic, saying the current downturn may continue for the next few quarters due to a dip in private investments and tepid consumer demand. Nomura said Asia’s third-largest economy will see a sub-par recovery, and forecast 4.7% GDP growth for the current fiscal year and 5.7% for the next fiscal year. Sanyal dismissed the conservative estimates and said his numbers took into account early signs of recovery in manufacturing and a pick-up in consumer demand. He said the government expected that average consumer price inflation would fall to 4% in the next financial year beginning April, after a recent

(From p-1) M O KO KC H U N G : Along with the rest of the divisions, the NPF Mokokchung division also staged sit-in protest against CAA at Imlong Place, Mokokchung town on Tuesday. NPF central representatives led by NPF central working president Dr. Huskha Yepthomi, vice president (central) and NPF framers wing president, Lanukaba and a host of party workers shared party’s views on CAA after the introductory note from NPF Mokokchung division president, Moasangba Jamir. The participants staged the protest holding placards some of which read ‘Roll back CAA’, ‘NPF reject CAA’, ‘Save us from CAA’, ‘Condemn vote bank politics, condemn CAA’ etc. After the protest, the NPF officials met the press and disclosed the purpose of the protest. They claimed that Nagas were very small in numbers and could be outnumbered by others in their own land in the future if they did not take precautionary and preventive measures today. NPF officials also claimed that CAA would provide citizenship to millions of illegal immigrants allowing them to become legal citizens and flood the North East region. Claiming that illegal immigrants would now arrive with legal documents, NPF officials said even Article 371A and ILP would not be able to protect Nagas and they would eventually outnumber Nagas in their own land. NEW DELHI, FEB 11 (AGENCIES): Indian economic growth is poised to bounce back after slipping to a more than six-year low of 4.5% in the July-September quarter as the government has taken measures to prop up investments and consumer demand, a top government adviser said. “Corporate tax reductions, the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code and the banking sector reforms have helped and will help propel growth further,” Sanjeev Sanyal, principal economic adviser at the finance ministry, told Reuters. The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, introduced in May 2016, has helped banks to recover billions of dollars stuck in outstanding corporate loans and offer loans to new borrowers. Sanyal said economic growth was set to accelerate to 6% in the financial

spike driven largely by food prices. There is enough space for the central bank to further cut interest rates, however, as inflation was likely to ease following a fall in vegetable prices, he said. “While there was a slowdown, this slowdown has by and large now bottomed out, and if anything from here on, growth is going to go up,” Sanyal said. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who tabled her annual budget earlier this month, told parliament on Tuesday that the signs of “green shoots were visible” and the economy was no longer in trouble. The Reserve Bank of India last week kept it policy rates steady but downwardly revised the country’s growth forecast for the first half of the next fiscal year to 5.56.0% from an earlier projection of 5.9%-6.3%. Sanyal said the budget has offered a clutch of tax incentives for sovereign wealth and insurance funds, which would leave more banking funds for private companies despite higher state borrowings. Other than the coronavirus outbreak in China, there is no “major other disruption,” to India, he said adding it was difficult to quantify the impact as the situation was still evolving.
