NEW DELHI/KOHIMA, JUN 10 (PTI/AGENCIES): The Centre has constituted a committee in Manipur headed by the governor to facilitate the peacemaking process among various ethnic groups and initiate dialogue between conflicting parties, the Union home ministry said on Saturday.

The members of the peace committee include the chief minister, a few ministers, MPs, MLAs, leaders from different political parties,educationists, litterateurs, artists, social workers and civil society groups, it said.

India’s Covid active cases drop to 2501

NEW DELHI, JUN 10 (AGENCIES): India saw a single-day rise of 186 Covid infections, while the active cases dropped to 2,501, the health ministry said on Saturday.

The death toll remained at 5,31,888. The total tally of Covid cases is 4.49 crore (4,49,92,648) and the active cases now comprise 0.01 per cent of the total infections, the ministry stated.

While acknowledging APO and KVC, as two respected organizations in the State, NSF vice presi-

dent Atokiho Sumi said the federation has taken note and was considering their appeal.

However, Atokiho said that the federation will take an appropriate decision during the emergency Federal Assembly or Presidential Council meeting of the federation, which will be held soon.

He further said that the federation will continue to function from the makeshift office setup outside the Naga Club building.

It may be mentioned that the APO and KVC said they were “deeply conscious of the likely long-term consequences”

IMPHAL, JUN 10 (AGENCIES): A section of the National Highway-2 (NH2), which connects Imphal and Dimapur, was once again blocked

by Sadar Hills unit of Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) following fresh violence that claimed three lives in ethnic clashes-hit Manipur, people familiar with the development said on Saturday.

The development came days after the blockade on a section of NH2 was temporarily suspended on the appeal of Union home minister Amit Shah for smooth supply of essentials to the violence-hit state.

COTU reimposed the blockade along the 13-km stretch of NH2 in Kangpokpi district following incidents of fresh violence that killed

three people, including an elderly woman, and two injured late on Friday night.

Though there was no official confirmation on the identity of the perpetrator of the fresh violence, the tribal organisation claimed that some gunmen dressed in military uniform attacked Khoken, a Kukidominated village on the boundary connecting Kangpokpi and Imphal West districts in the wee hours of Friday.

“The decision to reimpose the economic blockade was taken following the tragic events at Khoken village. This will continue indefinitely till there peace is restored,” COTU spokesperson Rev K Sitlhou told the Hindustan Times.

DIMAPUR, JUN 10 (NPN): Zunheboto Police on Saturday apprehended a minor involved in sexually assaulting a minor girl on June 8. It was also reported that angry protestors tried to gherao the police station in Zunheboto.

In a press note, SP Zunheboto Vishal said that soon after receiving a complaint about sexual assault on a minor on June 9, a case was registered at Women PS under sections of POCSO Act. A team headed by SDPO (HQ) was tasked to investigate the case. A medical examination was conducted and victim’s statement was noted in the presence of family members, SP said. During

the course of investigation, school teachers, staff and students were summoned and examined. Forensic samples were also collected for scientific evidence as per standard investigation procedures, SP said.

SP said the judicial magistrate was also requested to associate with a (TIP) Test Identification Parade of some suspects. Accordingly, on June 10, TIP was conducted in the presence of judicial magistrate, child welfare committee member, women leaders, parents along with victim. School teachers, working staff and students were ‘paraded’ before the victim to assess if the victim could identify

the accused from among the suspects, SP said.

Based on the TIP report, SP said police sought permission from the judicial magistrate and took the identified suspect accused into custody. Since the suspect accused was also minor, SP said that due care and necessary procedures were being completed.

SP said that investigation is in full swing to bring the case to early logical conclusion and deliver justice. Further, SP said that the factual assessment and progress of investigation was based on the investigation conducted so far and to lay any rumours or factual inconsistencies to rest.

Keynote speaker, Nagaland State Social Welfare Board (NSSWB) supervisor, Juliana Medom, in her address encouraged the domestic workers to know their rights.

She said such workers often lacked confidence which results in themselves failing to stand up for their own rights.

In a brief remark, Nagaland State Commission for Women member, Khrienuo Meyase, pointed out the lack of a proper legislations in the country to protect domestic workers.

DIMAPUR: A satellite Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST) initiated through the support of Nagaland State AIDS Control Society (NSACS) was launched on June 8 at Tening Community Health Centre (CHC).

A press release by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Peren office informed that the purpose of opening a satellite OST was to enable the hard to reach area clients to have easy access.

Launching the satellite OST, Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) Tening, Wabang Aier encouraged the community to avail the services provided through OST wisely for the betterment of the society.

He thanked the government of Nagaland, Strategic Expertise Technical Unit, NSACS, NGOs for setting the facility at Tening. At the programme, Regional Team Leader (RTL) SETU, K.P Ezung highlighted the participants on the importance of OST while Disuibe of Peren Users Network shared his experience.

DIMAPUR: An awareness programme on waste management and clean air was held for sanitation drivers, workers of both Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) and Ward/Village and KMC sweepers on June 9 at KMC Office.

According to a DIPR report, administrator KMC, T. Lanusenla Longkumer briefed the participants on

segregation of waste, illegal dumping, littering, safety measures and effects of air pollution. During the awareness programme, a medical camp in collaboration with UPHC Seikhazou and NHAK was also conducted for the attendees where a total of 101 persons availed the facilities. Basic safety/ work gear was also distributed to all the attendees.

IMPHAL, JUN 10: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and convener of the North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) arrived in Imphal on a day visit in the strife-torn Manipur and met with his Manipur counterpart N Biren Singh on Saturday.

Sarma, who was the first among the chief ministers of the northeast states visiting the state since the eruption of the incidents of violence on May 3 last, also met leaders of various civil society organizations, including Coordination Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), after the meeting with his counterpart.

The meetings reportedly discussed ways to bring back peace and normalcy in the state, sources said.

ter the spate of violence and the possible causes of the violence. Sarma, while asserting that the Central government was trying its best to restore peace and normalcy in the state, sought the cooperation of the CSOs for early restoration of peace and normalcy in the state.

BJP Manipur Pradesh president A Sarda Devi who also took part in the meeting told reporters that for the time being there was no question of replacing the chief minister of Manipur.

ernment at the Centre were giving emphasis on the restoration of peace and normalcy. From the party’s state unit side, talks were also being held with Central leaders to find ways to bring back normalcy in the state, she added.

Convener of Forum for Restoration of Peace, Ashang Kasar said that during the meeting with Assam CM, the forum requested him to extend his cooperation to form a state level peace committee for restoration of normalcy in the state.

From the AMUCO side, Sarma was requested to press the Centre to instruct the militants under suspension of operation (SoO) to strictly follow the ground rules and be confined to their designated camps.

AMUCO leaders also raised the issue of immigrants and urged him to press the Centre to take up necessary steps to detect and deport the illegal migrants from the state.

Correspondent IMPHAL, JUN 10: Chairman of Judicial Inquiry Committee and former chief justice of Gauhati High Court Ajai Lamba along with committee member retired IAS officer Himanshu Shekhar visited two relief camps in Imphal and interacted with the inmates on Saturday.

An official source said that they visited relief camps at 143 battalion CRPF Lamphel and residential colony Lamboikhongnangkohng, both in Imphal West district where residents of both conflicting communities were sheltered.

The committee interacted with the displaced people and gave a patient about the hardships faced in the ethnic violence, the source said.

The members of the inquiry committee assured them that their grievances will be heard and all concerned have been requested to submit written affidavits to the committee when called for. The committee will act in a very transparent and just manner, they assured.

The committee members further informed the general public to cooperate in the inquiry and stay calm and help restore peace in the state.

Govt to support participation of CSOs in sustainable dev: Khandu NAMSAI, JUN 10 (PTI): Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Saturday said that his government was committed to fostering an environment of public partnership and communication to support the active participation of civil society groups in sustainable development.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the C20 summit here, Khandu said his government recognises the immense value that civil societies bring to the table -- their expertise, local knowledge, and community-driven initiatives.

He lauded the C20 summit, which he said would serve as an exceptional platform for dialogue, knowledge sharing, and collaboration among civil society organisations from around the world to promote social and economic development.

“As we celebrate the

GUWAHATI, JUN 10 (PTI): A delegation of 12 opposition parties in Assam submitted a memorandum to Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Saturday, alleging deteriorating law and order situation in the state. The delegation, led by Congress Legislature Party leader Debabrata Saikia, also raised the “mysterious death” of police personnel Junmoni Rabha in the meeting, and demanded the immediate intervention of the governor in the matter.

The governor assured the delegation that he will ask Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take necessary steps in the matter, Saikia said.

“The delegation apprised the governor that though the police department is trying to project it as an accident, there is every reason to believe from the circumstantial evidence that it is a case of murder,” he claimed.

The delegation demanded a judicial inquiry by a sitting or retired high court judge instead of a CBI inquiry into Rabha’s death in the interest of a speedy impartial inquiry.

“It is pertinent to state that

frequent encounters in the state, not sparing even the police personnel, proves that the government is running a fragile administration due to which law and order of the state is deteriorating which is a matter of great concern for all,” Saikia said.

The delegation also demanded that the Assam government must take serious steps to resolve the boundary disputes with neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Manipur.

“The recent incident of violence along the border with Arunachal Pradesh in which two youths of Assam were killed clearly shows that though the chief minister is claiming that interstate dispute has been resolved, this is far from true,” he said.

NEW DELHI, JUN 10 (PTI): Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his “stoic silence” over the continued violence in Manipur, alleging he has “betrayed” the people of the state.

Modi’s silence is like rubbing salt on the wounds of the people there, Kharge said, adding the least the prime minister could have done was make an appeal for peace.

“Narendra Modi ji, 3rd May 2023 Violence first broke out in Manipur. It took almost a month for you to send the Union Home Minister to the state. 8 days after Home Minister’s departure, violence continues in Manipur.

“For a proponent of the so-called ‘Act East’ policy for Northeast India, your stoic silence on violence in Manipur is rubbing salt in the wounds of its people,” the Congress chief said.

“As the Prime Minister, the least you could have done is appeal for peace. You have betrayed Manipur,” Kharge also said.

The Congress has accused the BJP of being responsible for the present state of affairs in the northeastern state and has blamed the ruling party and its “divisive politics” for it.

It has demanded that steps be taken immediately to bring normalcy in the border state as the situation might turn out of control otherwise.

Representatives of all community-based organisations of Arunachal Pradesh and civil society groups are also attending it.

C20 is one of the official engagement groups of the G20 that provides a platform for civil society organisations to voice the aspirations of the people, officials said.

A major event under India’s G20 presidency, the summit aims to initiate extensive dialogue and engagement with civil society organisations, policymakers and different government and non-government agencies, they said.

The summit, with the theme ‘Diversity, Inclusion and Mutual Respect’, was organised by the Vivekananda Kendra, Kanyakumari in collaboration with the Arunachal Pradesh government, they added.

Meanwhile, the ban on internet services in strife-torn Manipur has been extended till June 15 even as the curfew relaxation period in the valley districts has been extended till 8 pm.

An order of the state home department issued on Saturday said the ban on internet service has been extended till 3 pm of June 15.

The order stated that there are still reports of incidents of violence, attacks and arson of houses and premises including exchange of firing.

As such there is apprehension that some anti-social elements might use social media extensively for transmission of images, hate speech and hate video messages inciting passions of the public which might have serious repercussions for the law and order situation in the state.

The ban on mobile data services/internet/data services including broadband services and internet/ data services through VASTs of Bharatnet Phase-II is further extended in the territorial jurisdiction of the state of Manipur, except for those who have already been specifically exempted by the government and may be exempted subsequently.

The order further directed service providers, Reliance Jio Fiber, Airtel Xtreme Black, BSNL FTTH etc. to ensure compliance of the order.

Any person found guilty for violation of aforesaid orders will be liable for legal action, it added.

On the other hand, curfew relaxation period has been extended to 15 hours from 5 am to 8 pm on June 11 in the valley districts of Imphal East, Imphal West and Thoubal.

Orders issued by the respective district magistrates of the two districts stated that extension of the curfew relaxation hours is to facilitate the public to purchase essential items including medicines and food supplies.

All persons belonging to essential services such as the health, PHED, Municipal officials/staff, power department, media personnel and functioning of courts will be exempted from further imposition of curfew after the expiry of the said period of relaxation.

The curfew relaxation period in Kangpokpi district has also been extended for 10 hours from 5am till 3pm on June 11 by an order of the district administration.

Dropbox set up by MLA in Imphal to deposit snatched weapons anonymously IMPHAL, JUN 10 (PTI): A drop box for returning weapons snatched from security forces has been set up at the home of BJP legislator from Imphal East L Susindro Meitei where “anonymity will be ensured”.

A large poster at a covered shed outside his home says “Please drop your snatched weapons here” both in English and Meitei language. A tagline below this adds “feel free to do so”, an indication that questions will not be asked how the weapons were in their possession in the first place.

Rs 7 crore looted at gunpoint in Ludhiana

CHANDIGARH, JUN 10 (IANS): Cash worth a whopping Rs 7 crore was looted from the office of a private firm in Punjab’s industrial town Ludhiana by at least 10 armed men on Saturday.

Police Commissioner Mandeep Singh Sidhu told the media that the office of CMS Company, a cash management firm, located near Rajguru Nagar, was looted.

He said 15 cash vans of the company are usually stationed there. The police have also recovered a cash van that was taken away by the miscreants.

The four arrested individuals include a woman named Sumera from Surat, the police said, adding that another person involved with the IS module is currently at large.

According to the police, these suspects were active members of the IS module with plans to abscond and officially join the terror group.

BALLIA (UP), JUN 10 (PTI): A teenage boy has been taken into custody for allegedly trying to rape a five-year-old girl in a village under the Pakdi police station area of this Uttar Pradesh district, police said on Saturday. A case has been registered in this connection and legal action is being taken against the juvenile. Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Durga Prasad Tiwari said a 17-year-old teenager attempted to rape a five-year-old girl in his neighbourhood late Friday evening.

SASARAM (BIHAR), JUN 10 (PTI): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday asserted that the country has been making rapid economic progress and is tipped to become a developed nation by the time it celebrates the centenary of its Independence.

Addressing the convocation of a private university in Bihar’s Rohtas district, Singh also noted with delight that there has been an increasing appreciation of the country’s cultural roots and foreigners were often using the word Bharat instead of India.

In 2014, India was at the bottom of the list of top 10 economies of the world but in a short span of time since then, the country is now among the top five, said Singh, referring to the period since the Narendra Modi government has been in power.

Citing a recent report of Morgan Stanley, an American multinational investment bank and financial services company, he said, “The global financial

analyst believes we will be among the top three by 2027... We must now resolve to become a developed nation by the time we celebrate 100 years of Independence in 2047.” “We are being increasingly respected the world over. I have learnt that foreigners now prefer to call our country Bharat instead of India. This denotes the growing sense of pride in our cultural heritage exhibited by the common people and the political class alike,” said the former BJP president.

He also recounted an anecdote of Swami Vivekananda, who had admonished a westerner for mock-

ing his flowing robes.

“Swami Vivekananda had said that in your country the tailor makes the man.

In our country, character makes the man,” said Singh, evoking applause from the crowds.

The BJP leader said that he was in full agreement with India being a secular country, but added, “By dharma, we do not mean places and forms of worship but the entire way of life.

Our dharma teaches us to value all life forms. Even a poisonous snake is fed with the milk of cows.”

Underscoring the importance of ‘sanskaar’ (values), Singh referred to an article by Thomas Friedman in which the American commentator had pointed out how both Indian IT giant Infosys and the global terrorist organisation Al Qaeda depended on highly educated youth.

“It was sanskaar that made all the difference.

The young men who flew planes into the World Trade Centres of New York were highly skilled and qualified.

On the other hand, so many youngsters have successfully transformed their start-ups into unicorns,” said Singh.

The veteran politician, who had worked as a lecturer of Physics in his early days, peppered his speech with many examples from Algebra and Geometry to pique the interest of the young crowd.

He also narrated a personal anecdote to emphasise the point that students continue to have respect for their teachers no matter the heights they go on to scale themselves.

“I once had the fortune to serve as the education minister of Uttar Pradesh.

Once I was travelling to my home town when I spotted an old Moulvi, standing by the roadside, carrying a garland. I recalled he was the man who had taught me while I was a child. He used to be strict and did not spare the rod when needed.

I stopped the car, got down and touched his feet,” said Singh, who also had a brief stint as chief minister of the northern state.

R A J O U R I / J A M M U, JUN 10 (PTI): National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah on Saturday hinted at his party staying away from the grand alliance against the BJP in next year’s general elections, saying most such parties remained silent when Article 370 was abrogated.

He also said the talks on a pre-poll alliance in Jammu and Kashmir would be premature before the sounding of bugle for the assembly elections in the Union Territory.

“What we have (to contribute) outside Jammu and Kashmir? We have a total of five (Lok Sabha) seats and what storm these seats can create? We have to fight against the BJP on these seats and what is going outside J&K is a secondary question,” Abdullah told reporters on reaching the border district of Rajouri.

The former chief minister was responding to a question on the possibility of the National Conference joining hands with other parties against the BJP in the run up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

“Compulsions aside, I do not see any benefit from such an alliance for the party and Jammu and Kashmir. I am repeatedly saying that when they need us, they knock on our doors. When (Delhi Chief Minister Arvind) Kejriwal is in trouble, he needs our support but where were these leaders in 2019 when we faced a big deceit,” he said, referring to the abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of J&K into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh by the central government.

Abdullah asked who among them stood with the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “Where were those who are raising hue and cry today for safeguarding the Constitution and de-

mocracy when we faced the murder of democracy. They did not speak against it and the fact of the matter is that they supported the move (in Parliament),” the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said.

On the possibility of a pre-poll alliance ahead of assembly elections in J&K, he said the question is premature as elections are nowhere visible.

“Let the election bugle be sounded, we will sit together to take a call on this.

The opinion or decision of one person is not acceptable, all the leaders of the party (NC) will discuss the issue, weigh its pros and cons and reach a consensus,” he said.

NEW DELHI, JUN 10 (PTI): The Congress on Saturday alleged that India’s debt has nearly “tripled” to Rs 155 lakh crore in the nine years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demanded a white paper on the state of the economy.

Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate alleged the Modi government’s “economic mismanagement” is responsible for the present state of the economy and claimed that Rs 100 lakh crore of debt has been added since the present dispensation assumed charge in 2014.

thinkable, which is an addition of over Rs 100 lakh crore to India’s debt, which is at an alarming level,” she said at a press conference.

The Congress leader further said India’s debt in 2014 was at Rs 55 lakh crore, which has now gone past Rs 155 lakh crore.

She claimed that India’s debt under 14 prime ministers in 67 years was Rs 55 lakh crore while Modi alone has increased it by over Rs 100 lakh crore.

“Economic management is not the same thing as headline management.

The Indian economy cannot be managed by managing headlines. It cannot be done through teleprompters and definitely not through WhatsApp forwards. The Indian economy will have to be managed by sound economic

managers who don’t want to hog the limelight. Who wants to do the work and fix the Indian economy and ensure that prosperity reaches every part of India?

“We demand a white paper on the Indian economy because the fault lines are only getting deeper,” she said.

Shrinate also claimed that the bottom 50 per cent of Indians who own three per cent of the country’s wealth paid 64 per cent of the GST collected. The richest 10 per cent, on the other hand, own 80 per cent of the country’s wealth but pay only three per cent of the GST collected.

n 2024, voters in the USA will choose their next president at the 60th quadrennial presidential election, scheduled for Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Voters will elect a president and vice president for a term of four years. Incumbent President Joe Biden, a member of the Democratic Party, is running for re-election. His predecessor Donald Trump, a member of the Republican Party, is running for re-election to a second, non-consecutive term. The victor of this election is scheduled to be inaugurated on January 20, 2025. The US election is a complex system where voters cast their vote for the candidate of their choice but the tally (popular vote) does not determine the winner. Instead, the voters choose the electoral college or representatives. The larger the population, the larger the total number of electoral votes and the candidate who wins at least 270 out of 538 votes of the electoral college is elected as President. If this number is not reached in the Electoral College, the House of Representatives elects the president. The newly elected President takes the presidential oath on January 20. While incumbent president Joe Biden of the Democratic Party will stand for re-election; the Republican Party, besides former president Donald Trump has so far ten high-profile Republican candidates officially seeking their party’s nomination.

Trump has always harboured the feeling that he was cheated in 2020 and has made no bones that he will run for the president in 2024. Even before his party could assess the situation, Trump launched his campaign nearly seven months ago in an effort to scare off potential challengers. As of now, Trump is running in a field that features no fewer than nine high-profile challengers. They include Mike Pence, his former vice president; four current or former governors: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson; Nikki Haley, trump’s former ambassador to the UN and also a former South Carolina governor; U.S. Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina; biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy; and conservative talk show host Larry Elder, an unsuccessful candidate for California governor. At least four candidates of color are seeking the presidency : Scott and Elder are Black, while Haley and Ramaswamy are of Indian descent. For Haley and Scott in particular, race plays a central role in their pitch to voters, although all four deny the existence of systemic racism and largely oppose federal policies designed to help people based on the color of their skin. Trump is the oldest at 76, while Ramaswamy is the youngest at 37. DeSantis is just 44, while Haley and Scott are in their 50s. The rest of the candidates are in their 60s and 70s. Trump is still dominating early primary polls, despite his extraordinary legal troubles. Trump nonetheless maintains a strong grip on a significant portion of the Republican base that has yet to see it dwindling. The predicament in the Republican Party is going to cost the party dear in 2024 since Trump will be the spoilsport. Though he has the widest support within the party, yet he is most unlikely to beat Biden in 2024. Biden is already senile but he is not what the other America wants but the latter is certain about not wanting the disruptive Trump as the next president.

Indigenous languages of Eastern Nagas: A call for cultural justice

In Eastern Naga lands, melodies unfold, Languages ancient, stories untold, Protect and preserve, their essence so rare, Cultural treasures we must all share, With love and pride, let their voices be heard, Eastern Naga languages, our heritage assured.

The cultural diversity of Nagaland is rich and vibrant, with numerous indigenous tribes inhabiting the region. Each tribe has its unique language, which not only serves as a means of communication but also embodies its cultural heritage. However, there has been a concerning lack of attention and support from the Government of Nagaland towards preserving and protecting the endangered languages of the Eastern Naga Tribes. It is a call of the time to shed light on this issue and discuss the urgent need for policy measures to safeguard these valuable linguistic treasures.

As we can observe, the Government of Nagaland has primarily focused its efforts on promoting and preserving the Tenyidie language, which has a good number of speakers in the state. Various initiatives, such as running a Diploma Course and a full-fledged MA program in Tenyidie, Moreover, recently I have discovered a detailed syllabus for Bachelor of Arts Degree program (under Choice Based Credit System) in ‘Ao’ Language (elective and Honours), clearly highlights the government’s commitment and gigantic efforts to preserving these languages. While this endeavour is commendable, it is disheartening to note the lack of academic presence and support for the Eastern Naga languages like Chang, Sangtam, Konyak, Phom,

recently had the privilege of attending the funeral and memorial of a courageous man. Someone whose family I know well, though I never knew much about the man himself. This has been a recurring experience in my just over four decades of existence here on Earth. Experiencing pangs of regret for not having engaged in conversations with or not having known the one whose funeral I am attending. My most lucid memory is of attending a funeral as a teenager one cold day in Zunheboto town; it was of Ashu Lukhashe Chishi. I recognized his son because he was a wealthy, famous and a politician. Little did I know that the real man was the one he called his father. Even being so young, I wondered why I had little knowledge of him when I should have known much.

Just the fact that he coined the word oshikimthi, ‘thank you’ in the Sumi tongue, had been enough to blow me away. I remember being glumly envious of my elder brother, who had interacted with him more by virtue of being friends with his grandson. Ashu Lukhashe was the one man who had dared to challenge my teenage elder brother as to whether he had assurance of his salvation as a child of God when his life journey comes to an end.

And when his politician son had remarked that he would pay him back for the money spent on his upbringing, Ashu Lukhashe had demanded that the payback be done in terms of the breast milk he had consumed from his mother. I safely presume that it was perhaps in a moment of heated conversation that such an exchange took place. Since then, I have heard numerous tales of

Yimkhuing, Khiamniungan, Tikhir, and others.

The neglect of Eastern Naga languages by the government represents a significant ‘Cultural Injustice’ against the Eastern Naga people. These languages are an integral part of their identity, history, and traditions. By failing to provide adequate visible resources and concrete support for their preservation, the government is contributing to the erosion of the rich linguistic heritage of these communities. Moreover, the fact cannot be ignored that ‘Cultural Injustice’ has also played a significant role in fueling the demand for ‘Frontier Nagaland’. The neglect and marginalisation of the Eastern Naga tribes by the government of Nagaland has created a deep sense of dissatisfaction and frustration among the people. The lack of attention given to the preservation and promotion of their indigenous languages, traditions, and cultural practices has perpetuated a sense of cultural injustice.

The Easter n Naga tribes, including the Chang, Sangtam, Konyak, Phom, Yimkhuing, Khiamniungan, and Tikhir, have a rich cultural heritage that too deserves recognition and protection. However, the government of Nagaland has primarily focused on the Tenyidie as well as Ao language, neglecting the linguistic diversity and heritage of the Eastern Naga tribes.

This cultural imbalance has resulted in feelings of cultural alienation and exclusion.

The demand for Frontier Nagaland also stems from the desire to address this cultural injustice (besides Economic injustice and overall gross violation of Constitutional Rights of the people in the region) and ensure that the voices and cultural

rights of the Eastern Naga tribes are well acknowledged and respected in real sense.

The rise of ‘Frontier Naga Territory’- which i believe is not very distant-would provide an opportunity for these tribes to have more autonomy and control over their cultural affairs, including language preservation, cultural festivals, and traditional practices however, even then the Government of Nagaland will have to ensure the ‘Cultural Justice’ to the Eastern Naga people in spirit of the ‘Constitutional mandate’. Addressing the issue of cultural injustice is crucial for fostering a sense of inclusivity and equality among all Naga tribes. It requires the government of Nagaland to take serious measures on a war footing to protect and preserve the endangered languages and cultural heritage of the Eastern Naga tribes. By doing so, the government can work in collaboration with the Eastern Naga stakeholders towards promoting a more just and inclusive society as envisaged by the Founding Fathers of the Nation.

Moreover, as understood, the issue of language protection and preservation is of paramount importance and therefore should be raised and discussed extensively in the legislative assembly of the state of Nagaland. It is crucial that the voices of the people from Eastern Nagaland, who have been affected by the neglect of their indigenous languages, are heard and their concerns addressed.

The twenty MLAs representing Eastern Nagaland hold a significant responsibility in advocating for the best interests of the Eastern Naga people and ensuring cultural justice for their communities. They should take the initiative to bring this issue to the forefront

and garner support from their fellow legislators. By initiating discussions and proposing relevant legislation, these Eastern MLAs can emphasise the urgent need for language protection and preservation. They can highlight the cultural significance and historical importance of Eastern Naga languages, shedding light on the detrimental effects of their neglect. Through constructive dialogue and collaborative efforts, these MLAs can work towards developing comprehensive language protection policies, securing funding for preservation initiatives, and implementing educational programs that promote the use and awareness of Eastern Naga languages. It is essential that the legislative assembly acknowledges the significance of this issue and takes proactive measures to safeguard the linguistic heritage of the Eastern Naga people. By prioritising language protection and preservation, the Nagaland State Legislative Assembly can contribute to cultural justice and the overall development and well-being of the Eastern Naga communities.

Needless to mention that language plays a crucial role in shaping and preserving a community’s culture and identity. It encapsulates their unique worldview, knowledge systems, folklore, and oral traditions. Preserving indigenous languages is essential for maintaining cultural diversity, fostering intergenerational connections, and promoting a sense of belonging among community members. Furthermore, language preservation contributes to the overall social, psychological and emotional well-being of the Eastern Naga Tribes, reinforcing their self-esteem and cultural pride.

To rectify the current situation and protect the endangered languages of the Eastern Naga Tribes, the Government of Nagaland should take the following policy measures without any delay: 1. Linguistic Documentation: Establish dedicated research and documentation centres on war footing in every district of Eastern Nagaland to systematically record and document the vocabulary, phonetics, grammar, and oral traditions of the Eastern Naga languages. This would create valuable linguistic resources for future generations and aid in language revitalization efforts.

2. Educational Initiatives: Introduce and promote Eastern Naga languages as elective and honours courses at the undergraduate level in educational institutions.

Also, various Certificate and Diploma courses in Sangtam, Chang, Konyak, Phom, Yimkhuing, Khiamniungan and Tikhir Language need to be introduced and popularised.

Develop textbooks, teaching materials, and language proficiency tests to encourage language learning and proficiency among students.

3. Language Revitalization Programs: Organise national and international level workshops, seminars, and cultural events that focus on Eastern Naga languages.

Encourage native speakers, elders, and language experts to actively participate in these programs and share their knowledge and experiences for the benefit of all.

4. Language Preservation Grants: Allocate funds (either independently or in collaboration with New Delhi) specifically for the preservation and promotion of Eastern Naga languages.

Coming back to the funeral in question, what struck me was the narration of his dear wife, Meneleü Chandola nee Kevichusa, Aunty Mene, as we lovingly call her, of how her husband, a pure-bred Brahmin from erstwhile Uttar Pradesh, now Uttarakhand, became a Naga. As part of the memorial audience, I learnt from his son Tarani’s account that as a war and conflict-zone reporter, he was a rare journalist with the gift, talent, and grit to do what journalists were meant to do. His first visit to Nagaland was in 1955, and he went on to marry Aunty Mene in 1960. In 1964, he was asked to join the Naga peace talks and became a friend of the Nagas. B.K. Nehru, then Governor of the State of Nagaland, complained that Uncle Harish Chandola had become an advisor for the underground and should not be allowed to stay in Nagaland. He was told that he needed an ILP to access his own home. An ILP (Inner Line Permit) is a travel document introduced by the British to protect natives from outside invasion, which became part of the inheritance thrown at us when they hurriedly left the nation and our part of the world. So, any non-Naga, and by default a non-native, was required to report to the administration and could not enter protected areas unless issued a permit. A Naga family led by Gokieso Meyase, from Aunty Mene’s native village, Khonoma, unhesitatingly adopted him as a son of the Angami tribe, formally offering him

their protection and that of the entire clan. Gokieso’s grandson Lhuvinyü Meyase sent a Vimho shawl all the way from the picturesque village perched on a hill to be placed on his father Harish Chandola’s mortal remains. This is a shawl worn only by a male who possesses a certain merit.

In the past, this had to be a great warrior or someone who hosted a Feast of Merit.

Now, it is worn by persons who have some stature in society. For Harish Chandola, this was a mark of respect for a life well-lived, a sign that he still belonged to Khonoma and would not be forgotten by his adoptive family. The shawl, which is woven sacrificially, painstakingly, and intricately over a backstrap loom, assumed a greater significance, far beyond being a labour of love.

Representing a profounder meaning, for it had moved Aunty Mene deeply, enough for her to have shared this critical and precious part of Uncle Harish Chandola’s life as she bade him farewell here on Earth.

Let us take immediate action to safeguard these linguistic treasures and honour the cultural legacy of the Eastern Naga Tribes.

PATAN, JUN 10 (PTI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday accused Rahul Gandhi of criticising India and discussing its internal politics during his visits to foreign countries, and said the Congress leader should learn from his ancestors.

Shah said it does not suit any leader to criticise one’s own country abroad, and asked Gandhi to keep in mind that people of the country were watching him.

He was referring to Gandhi’s criticism of the Narendra Modi government during his recent tour of the USA. “Any patriotic person should discuss Indian politics within India. It does not suit the leader of any party to go abroad and discuss the country’s politics and criticise the country. Rahul baba, you must remember that people of the country are watching it closely,” Shah said.

“Comparing 10 years of Manmohan-Sonia to 10 years of Modi, one will find that the 10 years of the Congress-led government were marked by corruption, mismanagement, economic downfall, terrorism and poor law and order situation.”

The 10 years of the Modi government have been that of capable and safe digital India walking the path of social welfare, he said.

Shah urged the people of Gujarat to vote for the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) to ensure that it wins all 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat in the 2024 election.

KOHIMA, JUN 10 (NPN): An unidentified drunk man allegedly assaulted a minor boy at Razhii point, here on Friday.

Narrating the incident, the victim’s sister said that around 4:20 pm while she had gone shopping for groceries with her younger brother one drunk man pushed her brother. She said she ignored the man since he was drunk and continued walking. However, she said the man came back and slapped her brother on the face accusing her brother of pushing him. “My brother is only a class five student and I was holding his hand the whole time so him pushing the man was out of question,” she said.

She said that she confronted the man but he started running away. She

said the man was chased for a while but could not catch him.

“The man was dark skinned and wearing a blue denim jacket. The amount of physical and mental trauma he has caused to my young brother is unacceptable,” she said.

As the incident happened outside a cosmetic shop, she said approached the shopkeeper, who shared CCTV camera footage. She said strict actions must be taken against such perpetrators. She posted CCTV footage on her social media account and requested the public to identity the accused.

A passerby who witnessed the incident said the same man pushed a friend and walked away. “We got worked up but we let go because he was drunk,” the passerby said.

KOLKATA, JUN 10 (PTI): Chief Economic Adviser V Anantha Nageswaran on Saturday said that the government is on the same page with the Reserve Bank of India on the GDP growth forecast for the current financial year which is 6.5 per cent.

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das announced at the end of the monetary policy committee (MPC) meeting on Thursday that the GDP growth forecast for 2023-24 has been pegged at 6.5 per cent, a tad higher than the April forecast of 6.4 per cent.

NEW DELHI, JUN 10 (PTI): In a bid to boost growth of the corporate bond market, regulator Sebi allowed mutual funds to invest in repo transactions in securities such as Commercial Papers and Certificate of Deposits. Sebi said that mutual funds can participate in repo transactions only in “AA” and above rated corporate debt securities, according to a circular.

In repo transactions, also known as a repo or sale repurchase agreement, securities are sold with the seller agreeing to buy them back at a later date. The instrument is used for raising short-term capital. For the purpose of consideration of credit rating of exposure on repo transactions for various purposes, including for potential risk class matrix, liquidity ratios and risk-o-meter, Sebi said the same will be as that of the underlying securities on a look-through basis.

KYIV, JUNE 10 (AGENCIES): Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced new military aid for Ukraine during an unannounced trip to wartime Kyiv on Saturday, as Ukraine braces for a counteroffensive against Russian forces and grapples with regular air strikes.

Trudeau paid his respects at a memorial site in central Kyiv to Ukrainian soldiers who have been killed fighting pro-Russian forces since 2014, and also met President Volodymyr Zelenskiy for talks.

Announcing that he would step down, Johnson issued a lengthy and explosive statement in which the former premier said he was a victim of “a witch hunt” that was taking revenge “for Brexit and ultimately to reverse the 2016 referendum result.”

Johnson also criticised Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s government, saying that when he left office last year “the government was only a handful of points behind in the polls” but “that gap has now massively widened.”

ISLAMABAD, JUN 10 (PTI): Pakistan’s Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on Saturday declared that the country was out of the economic vulnerability phase and the government would make payments to multilateral lenders on time while seeking bilateral debt restructuring.

Addressing the postbudget press conference in Islamabad, a day after unveiling the Rs 14.46 trillion budget for the 2023-24 fiscal year beginning from July 1, Dar said there were no plans to approach multilateral or development institutions to request debt rescheduling.

“As far as Paris Club rescheduling, we have no such plan on our menu. We will not go for rescheduling multilateral debt. We will make the payments on time and when they become due.

I don’t think it is a dignified way to go and tell them that we cannot pay,” he said.

Dar said negotiations could be pursued with bilateral lenders for extending the repayment period, which existed as an option and could be explored after

“Backloading the principal and focusing on debt servicing could be considered for bilateral debt rescheduling,” he said.

Dar also clarified that there was no issue with the domestic debt, and the government would not go for its rescheduling.

The minister admitted that the country faced deep and steep economic vulnerability but added that the government successfully overcame it and prevented further economic decline.

Adding that the country would be put back on the road to progress, Dar said the first objective would be to reach the 2017 economic indicators when Pakistan become the 24th economy in the world.

The minister also de-

fended that the declared GDP target of 3.5 per cent growth would be achieved and added that the focus was on agriculture, IT and small and medium-sized industry.

Talking about the International Monetary Fund (IMF), he hoped that the Washington-based donor would complete the process of the ninth and tenth review of the USD 6.5 billion stalled loan package and release funds, but insisted that alternative options were available.

Cash-strapped Pakistan is awaiting a muchneeded USD 1.1 billion tranche of funding from IMF, which was originally due to be disbursed in November last year.

The funds are part of a USD 6.5 billion bailout package the IMF approved in 2019, which analysts say is critical if Pakistan is to avoid defaulting on external debt obligations.

The IMF has insisted that the government should meet tough conditions before releasing USD 1.1 billion.

KAOHSIUNG, JUN 10 (AP): Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen on Saturday said the self-ruled island would work to improve its rescue and defense capabilities with new technologies, adding that strengthening Taiwan is key to maintaining peace.

Tsai also pledged that her government would promote policies to safeguard maritime and border security after inspecting an antiterror drill in Kaohsiung city in southwestern Taiwan.

“The safer Taiwan is, the safer the world is,” she said.

BOGOTA, JUN 10 (AP): Four Indigenous children survived an Amazon plane crash that killed three adults and then wandered on their own in the jungle for 40 days before being found alive by Colombian soldiers.

The announcement of their rescue on Friday brought a happy ending to a saga that had captivated many Colombians, a watch with highs and lows as searchers frantically combed through the rainforest hunting for the youngsters.

President Gustavo Petro celebrated the news upon returning from Cuba, where he signed a cease-fire with representatives of the National Liberation Army rebel group. He said he hoped to talk with them Saturday, and officials said late Friday that the youngsters were being brought to Bogota to be checked at a hospital.

An air force video showed a helicopter using lines to pull the youngsters up because it couldn’t land in the dense rainforest where they were found. The craft flew off in the fading light, the air force said it was going to San Jose del Guaviare, a small town on the edge of the jungle.

though they belong to an Indigenous group that lives in the remote region.

Petro called them an “example of survival” and predicted their saga “will remain in history.”

The military tweeted pictures showing a group of soldiers and volunteers posing with the children, who were wrapped in thermal blankets. One of the soldiers held a bottle to the smallest child’s lips.

The crash happened in the early hours of May 1, when the Cessna singleengine propeller plane with six passengers and a pilot declared an emergency due to an engine failure.

The small aircraft fell off radar a short time later and a frantic search for survivors began. Two weeks after the crash, on May 16, a search team found the

plane in a thick patch of the rainforest and recovered the bodies of the three adults on board, but the small children were nowhere to be found.

Sensing that they could be alive, Colombia’s army stepped up the hunt and flew 150 soldiers with dogs into the area. Dozens of volunteers from Indigenous tribes also helped search.

During the search, in an area where visibility is greatly limited by mist and thick folliage, soldiers on helicopters dropped boxes of food into the jungle, hoping that it would help sustain the children. Planes flying over the jungle fired flares to help search crews on the ground at night, and rescuers used speakers that blasted a message recorded by the siblings’ grandmother, telling them to stay in one place.

about the childrens’ wheareabouts and on May 18 the president tweeted that the children had been found. He then deleted the message, claiming he had been misinformed by a government agency.

The group of four children were travelling with their mother from the Amazonian village of Araracuara to San Jose del Guaviare when the plane crashed.

They are members of the Huitoto people, and officials said the oldest children in the group had some knowledge of how to survive in the rainforest.

On Friday, after confirming the children had been rescued, the president said that for a while he had believed the children were rescued by one of the nomadic tribes that still roam the remote swath of the jungle where the plane fell and have little contact with authorities. But Petro added that the children were first found by one of the rescue dogs that soldiers took into the jungle.

Officials did not say how far the children were from the crash site when they were found. But the teams had been searching within a 4.5-kilometer (nearly 3-mile) radius from the site where the small plane nosedived into the forest floor.

UNITED NATIONS, JUN 10 (AP): Attackers killed one UN peacekeeper and seriously injured eight others on Friday in Mali’s northern Timbuktu region, an area where extremists continue to operate, the United Nations said.

The peacekeepers, all from Burkina Faso, were part of a security patrol that was targeted first by an improvised explosive device and then by direct small arms fire seven kilometers (four miles) from their base in the town of Ber, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Mali’s transitional authorities to identify the perpetrators of the attack and bring them to justice swiftly, noting that “attacks targeting UN peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law,” Dujarric said.

The Security Council also called for a swift investigation and accountability, and underlined that attacking peacekeepers may not only be a war crime but that involvement in planning, directing, sponsoring or conducting such an attack can lead to sanctions.

SINGAPORE, JUN 10 (PTI): Indian archers crumbled under pressure against the mighty Koreans and Chinese to lose all their six summit clashes to conclude their Asia Cup Stage 3 campaign in fifth spot in the medal standings, here on Saturday.

Even without a single yellow metal, India ended up with seven medals -- six silver and one bronze.

NEW DELHI, JUN 10 (PTI): Recovering from a muscle strain he had sustained last month, superstar Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has pulled out of the prestigious Paavo Nurmi Games to be held on June 13 at Turku in Finland.

Event organisers said that the Olympic champion Indian has informed them about the “cancellation” of his participation in the World Athletics Continental Tour gold level event due to “health” issues. “ Jave l i n O ly m p i c champion Neeraj Chopra cancelled his participation in the Paavo Nurmi

Games. Chopra’s manager messaged the competition organisers that the athlete has health problems, which is why the (his) competition had to be cancelled,” said a statement on the website of the Finnish Athletics Federation.

“Of course, peak cancellations are always upsetting. At the moment, there seem to be quite a few 90m javelin throwers from recent years injured.

Chopra’s second best result of all time is from Turku last summer and he was certainly looking forward to the competition at least as much as we were,” said Jari Salonen, CEO of PN Turku Oy, which organises the Paavo Nurmi Games.

On May 29, Chopra has issued a statement that he suffered a muscle strain during training and was pulling out of the FBK Games (June 4) at Hengelo in the Netherlands as a precautionary measure.

Gold medal winners in the 2023 edition for India included Sainyam in the women’s 10m air pistol, Dhanush Srikanth in the men’s 10m air rifle, Amanpreet Singh in the men’s 25m pistol, Abhinav Shaw and Gautami Bhanot in the 10m air rifle mixed team, Gautami, Swati Chowdhury and Sonam Maskar in the women’s 10m air rifle team and Megana Sadula, Payal Khatri and Simranpreet Kaur Brar in the women’s 25m pistol team events respectively.
