Jobs to do in April 1. Sow hardy annuals, herbs and wildflower seed directly outside into gaps in border. 2. Protect the new shoots of hostas, delphiniums, lupins and other vulnerable plants from slugs and snails. 3. Sow sweet peas directly outside at the base of supports, and transplant those sown in autumn into their final positions. 4. Sow outdoor varieties of tomatoes, chillies and courgettes in pots, so they’re ready to plant out in late May or June. 5. Keep putting out food for birds, as they are busy raising their broods. If you have a greenhouse, polytunnel or garden shed with lots of light you can really get ahead this month by planting up your pots and baskets inside and allowing them to grow on for a few weeks until it’s safe to plant them out after Franklin nights. Franklin nights legend states that between the 17th – 21st of May (depending on which version you read), we can have ‘a frost that does much injury to the blossom of apples.’ Franklin was apparently a cider maker who sold his soul to the devil! Until next month, Jenny Howells
