Sunshine and smiles as 20,000 flock to show
World Cup rugby for South Molton player; VJ Day 80; farm life; gardening tips; what’s on and much more! Plus inside...
Molton Monthly Magazine - September 2025
Welcome to the September edition of Molton Monthly Magazine. It is fantastic to see South Molton’s Emma Sing performing at the highest levels on the rugby pitch. I wish her and her Red Roses teammates the very best of luck in the Women’s World Cup - let’s hope they bring it home!
The 59th North Devon Show was bathed in sunshine and saw an incredible 20,000 people through the gates at this annual celebration of all things rural.
At the end of this month the South Molton Carnival returns (see pages 12 and 37) Molton Monthly Magazine is one of the sponsors, and I have again donated advertising and editorial space to support the volunteer team - may the weather hold fair!
There’s an important note about government emergency mobile phone alerts in the News Roundup section (pages 50 - 52).
I had hoped to bring you a heartwarming story about South Molton Parish Church helping our swift population this month, but the pictures deserve more space - so you’ll have to hang on a little longer, sorry!

The stooks are stacked
by Tom Shiner McGinley
It’s a rural North Devon scene that has changed little in centuries, captured over summer by local photographer Tom Shiner McGinley for our photo of the month.
These ‘stooks’ are wheat harvested and stacked for use in thatching, the tent-like structures in a farmer’s field between Umberleigh and South Molton, allow air to circulate so that the crop dries naturally. The sight of stooks in the rolling hills of North Devon and Exmoor, has long been appreciated for its aesthetic and cultural value.
“The main reason for photographing the stooks each year is simply that I just love seeing the old fashioned ways still going in rural communities,” Tom told Molton Monthly Magazine
Whether it’s rural life like this, wildlife, nature, a landscape or seascape, special events, sports, a local character or something else - please keep emailing us your pictures. We usually only feature one each month in the magazine, but show more on our Instagram and Facebook pages: @MoltonMonthly
VJ Day 80th anniversary
2025 has marked the 80th anniversaries of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) on May 8th, and now VJ Day (Victory over Japan Day) on August 15th. It has been an opportunity to come together to honour and pay tribute to the Second World War generation in North Devon.
Among the tributes, there was a moving ceremony at South Molton War Memorial (above) and a gathering at the Assembly Rooms, plus floral displays inspired by the Burma Star medal were displayed at St Mary Magdalene Church (below).
Cobbaton Combat Collection held a commemorative weekend with WW2 military vehicles and living history groups. Kings Nympton Parish Hall hosted a film screening of their Dad’s Army play starring local actors.

Crowds flock to show photos
by Peter Robinson
The sun shone on the 59th annual North Devon Show, attracting an estimated 20,000 visitors to the showground at Umberleigh Barton Farm on August 6th.
Show secretary Theresa Soanes told Molton Monthly Magazine, “We would like to thank everyone for joining us for a great day. We work so hard to keep it as a ‘traditional’ agricultural show with livestock and exhibitors from around the region.”
“We were blessed by the great weather and the car parking plan put in place last year proved successful again.”
In front of a huge crowd, a peregrine falcon (bottom left) swoops from between the legs of horse Amadeus with trainer & showman Jonathan Marshall in the saddle. Below, the traditional Punch & Judy show entertained the children.
Concentration is essential with the big Belted Galloways
The show directors and committee are already planning next year’s very special 60th anniversary North Devon Show, which will take place on Wednesday, August 6th 2026. The true meaning of young farmers
Above, the dog agility trials drew the crowds and below, getting up close to farm animals brought smiles
The heavy horse ‘meet & greet’ proved popular 20,000 visitors packed the showground and tents
World cup is a ‘dream come true’ for Emma
South Molton rugby star Emma Sing is in the England squad for the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup, and will be aiming to help the Red Roses win the title for the first time since 2014.
They have been in scintillating form recently, and haven’t been beaten since the final of the last WRWC tournament in 2021, when they lost to multiple world champions New Zealand in a nail-biting finish which ended 34 - 31 in the dying seconds of the game.
Emma scored a superb try in the penultimate warm-up match against Spain (below and opposite), sprinting down the left wing with speed, strength and skill as the Red Roses ran out 97 - 7 winners on August 1st.
With the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup being held in England, there are high hopes for bringing the title home.
“It’s a dream come true,” said Emma. “I’m so privileged and excited to be part of the Red Roses squad for the world cup here at home. It’s unbelievable and I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
Emma has already had an amazing season, helping England to the Six Nations title and named top scorer in the Premiership Women’s Rugby series with her title winning club Gloucester-Hartpury.
Her family in South Molton say they’re “immensely proud” of her achievements and will be cheering loudly from the stands!
Hands off! Emma showing her strength and speed

Your jobs to do in September
1. Divide perennials every two to three years to maintain health and vigour. Suitable subjects are; Agapanthus, Anemone, Crocosmia, Geranium, Lysimachia & Hostas.
2. Plant spring flowering bulbs such as Crocus, Hyacinths and Daffodils. It is best to wait until November to plant tulips.
3. When the weather becomes autumnal you can plant and move shrubs and trees. Shrubs planted in the autumn will get off to a flying start in the spring.
4. Don’t neglect your hanging baskets, deadheading, watering, and feeding can keep them going until mid-autumn.
5. Remove dead leaves from waterlilies as the foliage dies back. Cut back overgrown marginal plants. And thin out submerged oxygenating plants if necessary.
After the hottest and driest spring and summer for several years, where we seem to have spent most of the time watering, we are finally getting back to some proper work this month. Winter flowering pansies, violas, polyanthus and primroses will all need potting up, closely followed by shrubs, perennials, bulbs, hedging, roses, and fruit trees.
Until next month, Jenny Howells Opening Times

It’s carnival time!
by Kim Maxted
We’re back - and in our traditional month of September. After the phenomenal success of last year, we’re hoping to make the 2025 South Molton Carnival even better!
The excitement will begin at 12pm on Saturday, September 27th in the town’s Pannier Market with the appointment of our Ambassadors and their Assistants. The raffle prize draw will be made along with the presentation to the winners of our children’s drawing competition.
The procession route will be the same, meaning that there will be road closures, with parking restricted and bus routes affected. Please see the notices around the town and at bus stops. Closures will be in effect from 5pm until 7.30pm - please adhere to the instructions from our marshals as it is for everyone’s safety. You can see the route in our advert on page 12.
The Pannier Market will be full of rides, stalls and food vendors, with some free rides for children thanks to our kind supporters. Judging of the floats starts at 5pm, with prizes in each of the eight classes. An overall winner will receive the Dick White Special Recognition Cup.
Grateful thanks to all our advertisers and supporters, we have produced a brochure which will be delivered to more than 2,000 local households. We cannot wait to see you all again at this wonderful event - the main South Molton Carnival Parade starts at 6pm, have fun!
Farm Life - a true vintage
by Roger Hill
At one of the recent agricultural shows I came across this beauty in the photo opposite. The Allis-Chalmers model B was the first tractor I sat upon as a small child (whilst stationary I must add!) - later, I learnt to drive on the subsequent model ED40.
To see these old tractors at shows brings back a lot of memories, and watching charity tractor runs stirs a special nostalgia in my heart. Allis Chalmers was a United States manufacturer formed in 1901. The company was a pioneer in introducing rubber tyres to agriculture in 1932. The tractors became very popular in the UK and played a vital role in food production during the Second World War.
It must have been a revolutionary change for my dad and other farmers to give up their beloved horses in favour of tractor power. Today, I love watching both at our September ploughing matches. This month sees most of the harvest completed, and as we reflect on the past season we start preparing the soil for the next.
Not all farmers plough the fields today with an increasing emphasis on minimal cultivation. There is, I believe, room for both methods depending so much on the soil structure. ‘Til next time, Roger #TuppertheTractor (tupperthetractor.com and quoitatcrossvineyard.com)
An original Allis-Chalmers model B tractor - around 120,000 were made between 1937 and 1957. Early models were imported from the USA, but after WW2 they started making them in the UK.
Chulmleigh Old Fair
It’s been running since 1253, and 2025 saw Chulmleigh Old Fair chalk up another successful programme of events.
“We would like to thank all of the people who worked behind the scenes to help us on fair week at the end of July,” said the organising team. “We do personally thank everyone at the time, but we could not put on the fair that you all love without the dedication of so many of you that help each year.”
Planning for 2026 gets underway in September, and the committee behind Chulmleigh Old Fair says volunteers and new ideas are always welcome. “We hope you all enjoyed this year’s fair, we have had some lovely comments which is much appreciated,” they added.

South Molton Community Garden
by Rebecca Blackman
It’s been a busy month, and our team has just finished harvesting our best ever crop of potatoes. They have minimal slug damage and are delicious. Our pumpkins this year are amazing! We’ll be saving those for our soup day in the autumn.
As part of National Volunteers Week, we were fortunate to have a team from the company Perrigo based in Braunton. They repaired benches, plots and compost bins and redefined the raspberry rows. Their work is very much appreciated! We’ll have a stall at the Eco Fair in South Molton Pannier Market on September 14th (advert page 16) so do come and say hello. All purchases will help support the community garden.
If you’d like to join us, please visit the garden on a Thursday afternoon, around 2-3pm, weather permitting. Alternatively, please see our website: southmoltoncommunitygarden.co.uk or find us on Facebook @southmoltoncommunitygarden

Be prepared for emergency alert test on mobiles
The national system for sending emergency alerts to mobile phones will be tested again this September, the government has said.
It will see compatible phones vibrate and make a siren sound for 10 seconds while displaying a message at 3pm on Sunday, September 7th, even if they are set to silent.
The system has already been used in North Devon, to issue a rare red weather warning for Storm Darragh in December 2024, after having its first test the year before.
The alerts are intended for situations in which there is an imminent danger to life,
such as extreme weather events, or during a terror attack for example. More information, including how vulnerable people can opt out, can be found on the UK government’s website: gov.uk
Bird flu warning
Bird keepers are being urged to be vigilant after outbreaks of Avian Influenza were reported on a Tiverton poultry farm, and among young pheasants at Winsford.
Station’s old name celebrated
170 years ago, what is now Kings Nympton railway station was first opened as the ‘South Molton Road’ stop. Now a sign to mark this special heritage has been unveiled.
The Tarka Line station was re-named Kings Nympton in March 1951 (photo below by Martin Pailthorpe).
Head retires after 21 years
Having completed 4095 school days and looked after 3014 pupils, Michael Johnson (right) the head teacher at Chulmleigh College has announced his retirement after 21 years at the school.
“It has been a privilege to watch our young people and my colleagues work so hard in order to shape a brighter future,” he said. Everyone at the school and in the community have wished Michael a fond farewell and a “happy and well deserved” retirement.
