Prestigious award for Molton Monthly Magazine; local climber aims for Paralympics; what’s on and much more

Molton Monthly Magazine - May 2025

Welcome to the May edition of Molton Monthly Magazine. I am proud and honoured to have won at the inaugural Northern Devon Flourishing Culture Awards, picking up the top prize for ‘rural community engagement’ for my work creating this publication over the past nine years. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to its continuing success - you can read more on page 8.

Congratulations to South Molton’s Emma Sing, starring - and scoring - for England in the Women’s Six Nations rugby internationals. Another inspirational sportsperson we feature is Marc Wyatt, who is now climbing for Britain and aiming to take part in the 2028 Paralympics. Good luck!

Communities are busy preparing for VE Day 80 in May, plus it is show season, so there’s a packed what’s on section. Apologies that some of advert text is on the small side, it has been a struggle fitting everything in.

It is what’s likely to be the last ever Devon County Council elections on May 1st, due to planned re-organisation of local authorities, and a list of candidates is on our website.

Molton Monthly Magazine is also published free to read on our website moltonmonthly.co.uk and we have daily updates for news and events on Facebook and Instagram @MoltonMonthly

Whether it’s rural life like this, wildlife, nature, a landscape or seascape, special events, sports, a local character or something else - please keep emailing us your pictures. We usually only feature one each month in the magazine, but show more on our Instagram and Facebook pages: @MoltonMonthly

It’s the first time in my nine years at the helm of Molton Monthly Magazine that I have used one of my own pictures as photo of the month - but it was a wonderful moment of serendipity atop Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on Exmoor.

Leslie Silverlock on Buckthorn (left) and Rachel Campbell-Johnston riding Blackbird (right) were taking part in a West Somerset & Exmoor Bridleways Association charity fun ride when they pulled up to take in the stunning views on a glorious spring Sunday. By chance, my wife Bianca and I arrived at the same moment having walked up to the Beacon. Not knowing who they were, I thought it could make a lovely picture with the sun directly above them, and asked if they would mind if I took their photo.

It turns out that Leslie and Rachel are already fans of Molton Monthly Magazine through their pivotal work with the charity Exmoor Young Voices, which supports young people living and working across Exmoor - recent recipients of the King’s Award for voluntary service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK and is equivalent to an MBE.

The Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, Mr Mohammed Saddiq, will present Exmoor Young Voices with their prestigious award in Dulverton on May 17th.

Top award for Molton Monthly

At the inaugural Northern Devon Flourishing Culture Awards 2025, Peter Robinson came away with top honours for his work publishing Molton Monthly Magazine over the past nine years, winning the category for ‘Rural Community Engagement’.

This prestigious event is part of North Devon & Torridge District Council’s Flourishing Culture Strategy. The awards celebrate people, groups, and organisations who have made a significant impact on the cultural life of communities in North Devon and Torridge.

“Just to receive so many nominations was incredible, but to win this award is absolutely amazing,” said Peter. “I would like to say a personal ‘thank you’ to you all, because this award is in no small part down to you - my hard working delivery team, the contributors, advertisers past and present and of course the readers. A wholehearted thank you for being part of the continued success of Molton Monthly Magazine.”

More than 170 groups and individuals were nominated, Peter was selected by an independent panel of judges, who said, “this award is in recognition of your cultural contribution to our local community through your innovation, talent and hard work.” The awards ceremony was held at The Park Hotel in Barnstaple on March 28th.

Other local winners included Jo StewartSmith and Amanda McCormack in the Digital, Film and Moving Image category for ‘Boat Stories’, and Mandy Harding for The Benita Project in the Innovation category.

Molton Monthly Magazine was also named South West Rural Enterprise Champion 2023.

Emma Sing is on song for England’s Red Roses!

South Molton rugby star Emma Sing scored a late try and three conversion kicks, as England’s Red Roses ran out 38-5 winners over Italy in their Women’s Six Nations opening game in York.

The BBC TV commentary team singled her out for having a ‘bright performance’ and she was one of three mentioned as being in the running for player of the match.

Mum Wendy told Molton Monthly Magazine, “When she walked out onto the pitch It was such a proud moment, we cheered loudly after each successful conversion (poor people in front of us!). Then she scored a try and that was a fantastic feeling, we are super proud of her achievements.”

Emma has been on top form for her club Gloucester-Hartpury who this season became the first to win three premiership titles back to back.

She was also top scorer in the league with 163 points, scoring 9 tries, 53 conversions, and 4 penalty kicks.

Wendy added, “We hope her performance will see her get match time for the Red Roses in the Women’s Rugby World Cup being held in England this August and September. It would be the icing on the cake, especially if the ladies win their home world cup!”

Marc is climbing to the top

He’s a man on a mission, and now para athlete Marc Wyatt has been selected for the GB Paraclimbing Team - finishing in an amazing 7th place in his first ever international competition in Amsterdam.

The 43 year old from South Molton had his left leg amputated at the age of 7 following a birth defect and unsuccessful operations. Marc has been training at the town’s Rock & Rapid Adventure Centre, who have become one of his key sponsors.

“Throughout my life I have had a deep passion for sport and have been working in the fitness industry for 15 years. I have also been playing amputee football and have proudly competed both nationally and internationally for England,” said Marc.

This page and opposite - Marc is aiming to climb for Britain in the 2028 Paralympics in the USA

Marc’s goal is to climb for Britain in the 2028 Paralympics in Los Angeles. He is completely self funded and is looking for more sponsors to help with training and competition costs.

“Being a self funded athlete presents significant challenges for me, balancing full-time work and family responsibilities,” said Marc. “If I can raise £5,000 a year it will enable me to focus on my performance and achieve my Paralympic dream.”

When Keith Crockford at Rock & Rapid Adventures first encouraged Marc to try climbing he had to overcome a fear of heights! “It’s great to see Marc progress the way he has and what he has achieved. Representing your country in any sport is an amazing achievement and we are happy to support him.” To become one of Marc’s sponsors email: marcaaronwyatt@hotmail.com

New festival celebrates nature on Exmoor

Running for the first time this month, Exmoor Nature Festival 2025 takes place over two weeks from May 17th to June 1st, and will feature more than 60 events and activities celebrating wildlife and wellbeing across the National Park.

Festival organiser Julie Colman said, “I’m delighted that the new Exmoor Nature Festival will be such a busy and varied fortnight, with so many events showcasing wildlife, the benefits of nature for human health and the sheer beauty of Exmoor.”

“Visitors and the local community will be able to enjoy a wide range of experiences across the area, showcasing what our unique natural environment has to offer here. It’s a great line-up; from family fun days, forest bathing and marine life watching, to wildlife trails, kayak adventures, farm walks and outdoor yoga, there really is something for everyone!”

You can pick up a free printed programme from the National Park Centres in Dulverton, Dunster and Lynmouth (open 7 days a week, 10am-5pm) and at various other outlets across the Greater Exmoor area.

Find more info and an online version of the programme of the festival events here: exmoor-nationalpark.gov.uk/nature-and-landscape/exmoor-nature-festival

Your jobs to do in May

1. Apply a liquid fertiliser to spring-flowering bulbs, this will encourage them to have more flowers next year and help prevent daffodil blindness.

2. Sweet peas need training and tying in to their supports to encourage them to climb and make a good display.

3. Prune spring flowering shrubs such as Chaenomeles, Choisya and Ribes after flowering. Viburnum tinus can also be trimmed this month.

4. Ensure newly planted trees and shrubs do not dry out. It has been an incredibly dry start to this spring, a good soak once or twice a week is more effective than a small amount of water each day.

5. Nesting season is in full swing now, so make sure you check for bird nests before trimming hedges.

Later this month you can finally start planting out summer bedding and create beautiful displays in your pots and containers with patio plants. This year we have even more choice, with lots of new bedding, patio and hanging basket plants. Ready made hanging baskets are also available this month.

Until next month, Jenny Howells Opening Times

New team at community shop

North Molton’s community shop has a new management team in place for 2025. It is led by Susie Keenan, aided by Anne Johnson and Jan Mason (pictured left). “Together they have a wealth of retail experience and boundless energy and enthusiasm to drive the shop forward,” said spokesman David Heath. “We are all very excited to welcome them on board and wish them every success.” New volunteers are welcome: shop@northmoltonshop.com or 01769 740093

Farm Life - April showers bring forth May flowers

Certainly wild flowers have been vibrant this spring, although can you guess what those are in my photo (opposite page)? They are actually turnips, planted for the sheep, that bolted and put on this magnificent yellow display.

We almost considered giraffes to eat them because they grew so tall, but did decide to leave some purely because they bees were enjoying them so much. Hopefully our little friends will have had a bumper start to the year after a disastrous 2024, when only 30% of honey was harvested. It should bode well for the season.

May is a busy but exciting month, with sheep shearing, silaging and a visit to the Devon County Show. We are taking my cousin from Perth in Australia, who is staying with us for six weeks, to the big event at Westpoint (May 15th to 17th).

Born in Devon, before emigrating, she likes to be busy catching up with family and friends plus visiting UK film locations she watches on Aussie television. We haven’t told her exactly how busy she will be here on the farm... because we are planting another 2,000 vines by hand. Still a glass of vino at the end of the day should help! ‘Til next time, Roger #TuppertheTractor (tupperthetractor.com and quoitatcrossvineyard.com)

Spring gold, but do you know what they are?

Carnival 2025 - It’s Up To You!

Turn your ideas into reality for this year’s South Molton Carnival on Saturday, September 27thwith the theme of ‘it’s up to you’! Last year was a great success and the volunteer organising team are hoping to make it even better this year, with plenty of floats in the parade and lots of fun things to do in the town’s Pannier Market.

Would you like to be a Carnival Ambassador? This is open to all 11 to 18 year-olds from the South Molton community, and the wonderful art competition for children is returning too. “To help us manage the event we need marshalls and stewards on the day from 4pm, but also sponsorship which will help to provide more free activities and rides for children in the Pannier Market,” said Kim Maxted from the organising committee.

Application forms for floats, the art competition and ambassadors are on the carnival Facebook page or collect from; The Amory Centre, The Cheese Larder, Rachael’s Bakery, South Molton Rotary shop and Bar27.

There will be a 2025 colour brochure delivered locally. If you would like to help by advertising in it, sponsorship, or in any other way, please contact Kim or Claire Bracher: info@bar27.co.uk

South Molton Community Garden News

Our Community Garden team days have got off to a brilliant start this year, and we’ve shared some wonderfully productive days working together in the spring weather.

The raspberry patch is pruned and tidied, we’ve planted potatoes in one of our shared plots (right) and work is continuing on the compost area. We found plenty of well-rotted compost while we were clearing one of the bins and that’s all been added to the communal plots.

Our bee hotel is assembled but the cocoons haven’t started hatching just yet. We’re hopeful they all survived the winter and they will emerge once the weather is warm enough. The next few sessions will be focusing on preparing the seed beds and making sure they’re ready for sowing. They’re still covered, which should give us a head start this spring.

If you’d like to join our friendly team, please visit the garden on a Thursday afternoon, 2-3pm, weather permitting. You can visit our website for more information: southmoltoncommunitygarden.co.uk or see Facebook @southmoltoncommunitygarden

Storm overflows ‘halved’ claim

South West Water says storm overflow spills in North Molton halved last year following upgrades to the village’s sewage treatment plant.

With 2024 the wettest on record, the company claims there were 101 ‘spills’, compared to 202 the year before. A new storage tank has been built to provide extra capacity during periods of heavy rain.

Show season begins

The three-day Devon County Show gets underway at Westpoint on May 15th, with actor Martin Clunes opening the popular Festival of Heavy Horses. On Sunday, May 18th the popular Kings Nympton Classic returns to the village with a varied display of vehicles. Then on the weekend of May 31st and June 1st, the action heads over to Rackenford for the annual South Molton Vintage Rally. Please see the what’s on section starting on page 12 for more info.

Grant for Chulmleigh

Chulmleigh Parish Council will receive £36,935 towards the cost of improvements at Red Lion Corner (right), which will include a new shelter, planters, seating and a cycle stand. The allocation is funded by Section 106 contributions from the Leigh Road development. The remainder of the scheme’s cost will be funded by the town council.

Hall’s official ‘opening’

North Devon MP Ian Roome was joined by his predecessor Selaine Saxby to ‘cut the ribbon’ (right) on the newly refurbished Chittlehampton Village Hall on March 22nd. They described the quick completion of the improvements as a “credit to the community”. Much of the work was funded by a £264,000 grant from the Government’s Community Ownership Fund.
