Molton Monthly Magazine - June 2025
Welcome to the June edition of Molton Monthly Magazine. Is it just me or is this year flying by? We will soon be approaching the summer solstice on June 21st!
At the time of writing, the largely dry, warm and sunny weather has continued. Leading the Environment Agency and South West Water to keep an eye on reservoir levels and urge us all to conserve water to help avoid a drought. We’ll see what the summer proper brings!
On the cover this month are the students from Chulmleigh College, with their poignant tribute for VE Day 80 on May 8th. Apologies to the many communities who aren’t featured with their events, space has been squeezed.
After featuring South Molton rugby star Emma Sing on the cover last month, she went on to score two vital tries in England’s dramatic championship win over France.
There’s a great opportunity this month to become a ‘citizen scientist’ and help monitor the River Mole. Having healthy rivers is vital to us all, so please support this new project.

Lamb and stick
The lambing season is one of the most significant, and busiest, times in the farming calendar across North Devon and Exmoor.
The sight of lambs frolicking in the green fields is one that lifts the spirits and heralds the seasonal shift, as spring growth bursts forth and we start to think about summer.
This little lamb had obviously been watching his sheepdog counterparts more closely than his friends, and was happily playing with a long stick that had fallen to ground.
Farmer, photographer and rural sage, Chris Metcalfe, captured this endearing image for our photo of the month.
“It was definitely playing, and really quite amusing,” Chris told Molton Monthly Magazine. He captioned it ‘dog and stick farming?’ on his popular Instagram feed.
You can see more of his wonderful photos on Instagram @farmertorque and on his website where prints are available: farmertorque.com
Whether it’s rural life like this, wildlife, nature, a landscape or seascape, special events, sports, a local character or something else - please keep emailing us your pictures. Vital help to monitor local river
Volunteers are needed to join a new ‘citizen science’ project to survey and report water quality in the River Mole.
“It’s an exciting opportunity to participate in the Westcountry Rivers Trust CSI training to help monitor the water quality,” said Peony Knight, the South Molton representative from the North Devon Biosphere organisation.
“This is designed to equip people with the skills to identify and address issues with the health of the river and spot pollution events.”
An initial training session is being held at the Amory Centre in South Molton on Thursday, June 5th from 5pm and will be followed by visiting the River Mole in the town. All ages are welcome to take part.
In 2019 an agricultural pollution spill killed more than 15,000 fish, including juvenile salmon and trout, in the River Mole near South Molton. The Environment Agency launched a successful prosecution of the business responsible for the incident.
“Our rivers are the lifeblood of our societies. Since the dawn of time society has centred their communities around water as it was vital for their survival, but we have forgotten this,” said a spokesman for the Westcountry Rivers Trust.
“Water now comes from the tap and we have become so disconnected from our rivers and their health - an ultimately ours.”

On Thursday, May 8th, students and staff at Chulmleigh College observed a two-minute silence to mark VE Day 80 - reflecting on the immense sacrifices made by so many to protect the freedoms we enjoy today. To commemorate the occasion, Year 7 pupils created a short video with help from Mid Devon Drones.

Starring for England is ‘a dream come true’, says Emma
South Molton’s Emma Sing scored two pivotal tries as England beat France by a single point in a nail-biting final, to clinch the 2025 Women’s Six Nations title in front of a massive crowd at the Allianz Stadium, Twickenham.
“It was amazing! You can hear the noise from the stands - it’s incredible. Every time we did something, and at the end when France were only one point behind they really got behind us and rallied us and made it so hostile for France,” said Emma.
With just one point separating the teams a the end of a tense championship-deciding match, Emma’s two tries were crucial to the Red Roses’ victory. “It was unbelievable! I couldn’t have asked for anything more and coming back and hugging all my teammates after scoring - it’s like a dream come true.” England overcame France by 43 points to 42 on Saturday, April 26th to take their fourth Grand Slam title in a row.
Emma plays rugby professionally for Premiership champions Gloucester Hartpury, having started out with her home team South Molton. She only found out a few days before that she was playing in possibly the biggest match of her career so far, stepping for the injured Ellie Kildunne. “It feels unreal. At the beginning of the week I wouldn’t have thought I would have been here on the pitch - but to be a part of it, it’s incredible!” added Emma, who is hoping her form will see her back on the pitch for the Women’s Rugby World Cup this autumn.

Your jobs to do in June
1. Continue planting summer bedding in pots and borders, water regularly to help plants establish quickly.
2. Cut back spring flowering perennials, such as Pulmonaria, to encourage a fresh flush of foliage.
3. Prune late spring and early summer shrubs after flowering, such as Weigela and Philadelphus, thinning out the older stems.
4. Plant out courgettes, runner beans and French beans now that the danger of frost has passed.
5. Keep your bird bath topped up so the birds can bathe and drink in dry weather.
We have had the most amazing weather this spring and as such it has made the nursery busier than ever!
Here at Ash Moor, we still have masses of beautiful plants left which will keep your pots and borders looking stunning all summer and into the autumn. Directions to us at Rose Ash are at the bottom of this page.

Farm Life - making hay while the sun shines
by Roger Hill
I still appreciate the magic of walking through a hay meadow, especially when the butterflies flutter ahead of you. This year there seems to be an abundance, such as the Comma (Polygonia c-album) which actually hibernate in hedges looking like a dead leaf.
Even after the grass has been cut and dried there is little to beat the sweet smell of hay to invigorate the senses. Gone are the days when my dad used to keep the baling for me, ready to come home from school to face 10,000 small bales! Luckily in those days friends from the village used to call in to help of an evening.
Today, haymaking is mechanised but still reliant on a prolonged sunny spells. If this does not materialise then haylage is a half way house, meaning that it needs some warmth but is wrapped as part of the process. This appeals to horse owners who sometimes find hay too dusty and their four legged friends can develop a cough.
I do love June especially the long summer evenings, with the smell of honeysuckle from the hedgerows. Even the farm animals seem content... and I have no bales to pitch by hand.
‘Til next time, Roger #TuppertheTractor (tupperthetractor.com and quoitatcrossvineyard.com)

Try a new sport!
South Molton Bowling Club is offering you the chance to try the sport, with free lessons on Wednesday evenings in May and June. “Just come along to our clubhouse on Mill Street for 6.30pm, where you will be welcomed and provided with all equipment. All we ask is that you wear some flat soled shoes,” said Tim Bowden from the club.
There’s also an opportunity for the over sixties to try out the martial art Tae Kwon-Do, every Thursday at 6pm at the Duke Street church hall in South Molton. “People who have taken part have found it has improved their flexibility, strength, reaction time, balance and confidence. We have a laugh as well!” said organiser Brian McGovern. The first session is free, after that it is £5 per week. You can email Brian on: brianlmcgovern@gmail.com
South Molton Community Garden
by Rebecca Blackman
We’ve been putting in extra time at the garden, with longer Thursday afternoons and regular team days. It’s all looking well cared for; the grass is being mowed, benches and tables have been lovingly repaired and we’re seeing great progress in the ‘Willy-Nilly’ garden.
Some of the flower beds have become so overgrown with grass that we’ve taken the plants right out, cleared the weeds and put the plants back in. The WillyNilly garden always looks amazing, even when it’s full of weeds. It’s especially beautiful during the summer when everything is flowering and bursting with colour. It’ll be wonderful to restore this area to it’s full glory!
Our market stall at the end of April was a great success. Thank you to everyone who made purchases to help us raise funds for South Molton Community Garden. If you’d like to join us, please visit the garden on a Thursday afternoon, 2-3pm, weather permitting. Alternatively, see our website for more information: southmoltoncommunitygarden.co.uk or on Facebook @southmoltoncommunitygarden
