Cleared for take-off! Storks return to North Devon’s skies after 600 year absence
Team GB for local teenager; Santas rides in summer; gardening tips; school holiday what’s on and much more! Plus inside...
Molton Monthly Magazine - August 2025
Welcome to the August edition of Molton Monthly Magazine. Firstly, I am looking for an active and reliable person to take over regular deliveries in Chittlehampton from late September - please email me if you are interested.
The top story this month is the return of beautiful white storks to our skies after an absence of 600 years.
Congratulations and good luck to one of our former delivery team members, Samuel Rozputynski from South Molton. At 17 years old he has been selected for Team GB to compete in European and National wakeboarding championships in August.
In the News Roundup section (pages 50 - 54) there’s an urgent appeal for volunteer drivers to help people in our rural communities get to hospital appointments. Plus with the school summer holidays starting, there’s a packed what’s on guide for you.
Next month, we’ll have news about a project to help swifts take up residence in a local church tower, and photos from Chulmleigh Old Fair and the North Devon Show.

Halcyon, the fisher king
Whether it’s wildlife like this, rural life, nature, a landscape or seascape, special events, sports, a local character or something else - please keep emailing us your pictures. We usually only feature one each month in the magazine, but show more on our Instagram and Facebook pages: @MoltonMonthly

Steeped in mythology, the common kingfisher is an iridescent example of how nature can so often be full of beauty. Greek legends described them as ‘halcyon birds’.
This stunning image of a juvenile bird was taken near South Molton recently by keen wildlife photographer Alice Rainger.
“To photograph one is always an honour,” Alice told Molton Monthly Magazine. “After visiting the river for weeks, spending hours watching the water, I kept coming home empty handed - that is until this beautiful young kingfisher landed nearby, and rewarded me with this breathtaking opportunity to see one up close.”
“I sat back and watched in awe as it stayed for around 10 minutes, only leaving when it was time to catch a fish.”
“An extremely elusive species, these colourful little characters are always so fascinating to watch if you’re lucky enough to witness one at work hunting in a river or lake, but blink and you’ll miss it... often it’s just a flash of blue and it’s gone!”

Otter charity’s meadow appeal
The UK Wild Otter Trust, a wildlife rehabilitation and conservation charity based at Kings Nympton, is inviting the local community to support a new project; the creation of a wild meadow designed to combat changes to our environment and give people a place to connect with nature.
“This is about more than planting trees, or even saving otters,” said Dave Webb, the organisation’s founder. “It’s about giving people a space they can love, care for and feel proud of - a place where the community can take real action to help fight climate change.”
The trust is aiming to raise £5,000 to transform a half-acre plot within its new flower meadow into a community space that encourages biodiversity, supports carbon
capture, and helps people take practical and meaningful steps towards tackling the climate emergency. The funds will help create secure fencing around the meadow to ensure safe access for the community, the planting of 150 native trees to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and a small pond to support biodiversity and help regulate local environmental conditions.
There will be a dedicated space for locals to grow perennial plants that contribute to long-term carbon capture. Molton Monthly Magazine has donated two self seeded trees to the Lea Meadow project.
“We want to create a space that people not only use, but care for - a wild, living meadow where everyone can play a part in protecting our planet,” added Dave Webb.
The UK Wild Otter Trust is entirely volunteerrun. In 2024 the charity rescued 38 otters, releasing 19 into the wild. The centre at Kings Nympton currently has 23 otters going through rehabilitation.
To get involved you can call the charity on 01769 580621 and to make a donation go to: avivacommunityfund.co.uk/p/lea-meadowclimate-change-community-gardens

50 Years - A Short Family Story - The Bell Inn, Chittlehampton
It all began with David and Susan Reed. One day, Susan said to David, “If you like spending so much time in a pub, we’d be better off running one ourselves!” So they took on the tenancy at The Bridge Inn in Dulverton, Somerset. After a successful period there, they decided it was time to buy a pub — and in 1975, they found their way to Chittlehampton in North Devon.
David and Susan ran The Bell Inn until 1980, building up the business and hosting a wide range of pub teams, including cricket, football, skittles, darts, and pool. There was always a game of shove ha’penny being played. David even rented out the bedrooms for bed and breakfast.
After they moved on, the pub was leased to various tenants over a seven-year period, with mixed success. Then in 1988, it was suggested to Lynn — recently married to Mark — that they might like to run the pub for a few months until new tenants could be found. They moved into The Bell, and with Lynn’s experience working with her dad and Mark’s background in retail, something just clicked.
The pub was tired at that time, suffering from a lack of investment, and trade was very different from what it is today. But thanks to a fantastic local community and its beautiful setting on the square beneath North Devon’s prettiest church — St. Hieritha’s — there was real potential.
Trade began to change over the years, with the smoking ban, the growth of supermarkets, and the increasing importance of food in pubs. Lynn, along with Shirley Heel, Helen Reed, and Lynn’s sister Wendie, embraced these changes, and the food side of the business really took off.
Over time, improvements were made: the skittle alley was taken down and relocated, a conservatory was added, and the kitchen was expanded and modernised. Eventually, the third generation joined the business, with Matthew and Kyran working in the pub — a proud moment, seeing them become such an integral part of the team.
Many challenges have been faced, but none tougher than the COVID pandemic in 2020. We met it head-on, transforming overnight into a takeaway and delivery service. We even managed to build a new conservatory and improve the outside area, all thanks to a brilliant team who weren’t afraid of hard work.
Our ethos as a family has always been about creating a great atmosphere, offering great value, and showing pride in what we do, where we live, and North Devon in general. We’re extremely proud to still be open and serving food seven days a week, at both lunch and dinner — something that’s becoming increasingly rare.
Our ability to adapt to every challenge is a testament to the strength of our team and the pride we take in what we do. 50 years is quite an achievement. It’s a moment to reflect and, most importantly, a chance to thank all the wonderful people who’ve worked with us — too many to name — and all those who’ve supported us. We hope we’ve created great memories and good times for you and your families.
Here’s to the next chapter!
Thank you – Mark, Lynn, Matt, Kyran, and Susan

Storks soar again after six hundred year absence
They once nested in British chimneys and church towers. Now, for the first time in centuries, white storks are soaring over North Devon again, the a result of a low-profile rewilding project.
“It’s extraordinary. These birds haven’t lived freely here in over 600 years, yet as soon as they were given the choice, they stepped out into the landscape like it had always been theirs,” said Doretti Engi, who owns the local farm they were released from. “They’ve taken to the thermals, they’re foraging confidently - they seem utterly at home. It makes you realise just how ready the land was to welcome them back.”
The ten white storks released are expected to leave in August and fly through France to Spain. The hope is they will stay in Europe until they pair up and then return to North Devon where they were born, as long as there is a colony to come back to.
In order to achieve this Mrs Engi is planning to get two breeding pairs of flightless storks as an anchor to create a colony and attract them back in. Storks are tall wading birds known for their striking black and white plumage and impressive wingspan. They became extinct in Britain by the 1400s due to hunting and habitat loss.
On the nest - one of the pairs of white storks bred in North Devon and now released into the wild
Soon after release, they were spotted in skies outside South Molton. Molton Monthly Magazine gardening correspondent Jenny Howells did a double-take when she saw them over her nursery at Rose Ash.
“Quite a surreal sight this morning seeing eight storks circling overhead!” she said.
“These birds connect us to a time when wild animals were part of the living countryside,” said Eric Gow, from the project partner Keep It Wild. “But it’s not about nostalgia - it’s about function, and restoring the full richness of our ecosystems.”
“Seeing them above the tree line, circling with effortless grace, it takes your breath away. It feels like new life and hope,” Doretti Engi

Samuel is ‘rising star’ in British wakeboarding
He has just turned 17 years old, and South Molton’s Samuel Rozputynski has already been selected for the Team GB Wakeboard team and will be competing in the European & African Championships in Poland and the UK National Championships at North Devon Wake Park, near Clovelly, all taking place in August.
Samuel left South Molton Community College last summer and has been working as an apprentice bricklayer for a local family firm, but his eyes are set on stardom in the high octane sport of wakeboarding.
“I first experienced wakeboarding when I was invited to a birthday party at North Devon Wake Park five years ago. I really enjoyed it and from then on became a regular rider at the ‘Kids Club’ taking up every opportunity to improve my skills from the excellent coaching of the Constable family,” said Samuel, who also had a spell delivering your Molton Monthly Magazine.
In June last year, while competing at the UK Nationals in Nottingham aged just 16, his talent was spotted and he was invited to join Team GB and soon after was riding for them at the IWWF World Wakeboarding Championships in Paris! His mum Anita said, “We are so proud of Samuel in what he has achieved, from working hard with his apprenticeship and also seeing him give up his free time to coach and improve other young riders whilst bringing on his own wakeboarding skills with Team GB.”
Jack Constable, from North Devon Wake Park added, “Since leaving school, Samuel has become a rising star in the world of wakeboarding, earning a place on Team GB, and competing at the world championships.”
“Alongside this, he volunteers to coach youngsters at the club where he first started his journey. We’re incredibly proud of his achievements and his role within our sporting community.”

Santas bring the heat!
photos by Karolina Andreasova
It was a sweltering summer day, but that didn’t deter dozens of bikers from dressing up as Santa - as well as all their riding gear - to raise vital funds for Children’s Hospice South West.
The riders stopped off in South Molton for Mayor Wayne Martin’s special fundraising event on June 29th, including parading through the town’s Pannier Market. They have raised more than £1,700 so far. The Santas on Bikes then rode on to visit the young residents at Little Bridge House Children’s Hospice in Fremington to bring them some very early Christmas cheer.
“We do this in the summer because not all children will see another Christmas. It’s about creating smiles and memories now, while we can. It’s very emotional when you think about it,” said one of the main organisers, Paul Lynham.
“Thank you so much to everyone who arranged and took part in the Summer Santa Cruise to Little Bridge House, it was wonderful to see you all. Thank you for supporting Children’s Hospice South West,” said a spokesman for the charity.
Your jobs to do in August
1. Deadhead annual plants regularly and cut back perennials when they have finished flowering. This will stop them producing seed and will encourage more buds to form.
2. Now is the time to prune your wisteria to encourage it to flower more freely and regularly. Cut back the green whippy shoots to five or six leaves.
3. Prune apples and pears trained as cordons, espaliers and fans. Cut back new shoots which are more than 8in long to three leaves above the basal cluster of leaves. 4. Keep watering containers and new plants.
5. To save money next year collect seeds from plants in your garden.
At this time of the year, we get a lot of customers telling us that their garden is ‘going over’ and looks autumnal. The reason for this is simple, most people buy their plants in April, May and June.
They are naturally drawn to plants which are in flower, therefore spring/early summer flowering. The solution to the problem is to buy autumn flowering plants in August and September. Please note our new opening times for August below.
Until next month, Jenny Howells

Farm Life - early harvests
by Roger Hill
Wow, what a surprise we had nestled amongst the vines (see photo opposite)! It obviously helps being camouflaged amongst the burst of growth we’ve had. In fact with the combination of warmth and showers our vines are at least three weeks ahead of last year.
We are not counting our chickens, or our grapes, yet because anything can still happendowney mildew when humidity is high, summer storms or bird attack. At the moment though the signs are positive. Even our newly planted vines are flourishing.
The new grapevines were put into rich deep soil whilst it was dry and then rain fell two days after we had finished. Rabbits had a nibble of about two hundred until we found their entrance point in the perimeter fence. We do also have a resident hare who we do love to see.
Crop harvests in general have been early this year, with high quality hay and silage being made. Yields of corn are down, mainly due to the prolonged dry Spring. No doubt we shall hear the opinions of fellow growers when we visit the North Devon Show on August 6th (see page 12). As with all shows my first port of call will be the cake stall!
‘Til next time, Roger #TuppertheTractor (tupperthetractor.com and quoitatcrossvineyard.com)
We heard chirping on the grapevine!
Football blocks sewer!
An unusual own goal has been scored in South Molton, as water engineers found a football blocking a sewer pipe (pictured right) after apparently being flushed down the loo of a house in the town!
“We’re always prepared for the unexpected,” said Jay Harris, Director of Wastewater Operations at South West Water, “but when a football was found, we knew this wasn’t your average day! We’ve even had a toy car ‘parked illegally’ and a traffic cone making a bid for freedom through the sewers. It’s amazing what turns up in. We really don’t know how these mysterious items get there.”
As comical as these finds may be, water bosses warn they can lead to sewage ending up in homes or gardens and flooding during heavy rain - it also costs millions to unblock the drains. They’re urging customers to take more care over what gets flushed away.
South Molton Community Garden
by Rebecca Blackman
The Community Garden is enjoying the summer! The sweetcorn and squash are in the ground and they’re looking good. The gooseberries are ready and we have currants ripening, along with some raspberries and a few loganberries too.
The strawberries in our individual plots did well this year but are finished now, so it’s nearly time to divide the plants ready for next year.
We try very hard to support the local wildlife in the garden as a whole, but we’re starting to develop a dedicated wildlife area which will encompass the pond, bee hotel and the compost heaps. It does mean we’ll have to relocate the mud kitchen and remove the herb spiral, but our communal herb garden is well established so we’ll still have plenty to share. It could eventually make much better use of the available space.
If you’d like to join us, please visit the garden on a Thursday afternoon around 2-3pm, weather permitting. Alternatively, see our website: southmoltoncommunitygarden.co.uk or find us on Facebook @southmoltoncommunitygarden

Indoor skate park closing
Skate Molton CIC has announced that it is closing its indoor facility in South Molton on August 31st, a year after it opened.
Writing on their Facebook page, the team behind the organisation said, “So, we’ve made the decision that Skate Molton HQ will close on 31st August 2025. But don’t worry, this is just the start of something even better!”
“From September 2025, we’re going all-in on bigger, better skate events at South Molton Pannier Market, affordable skateboarding & roller skating lessons and more free pop-up events across North Devon.”

Measles warning
Parents in North Devon are being asked to make sure their children are vaccinated against measles as the disease spreads across the UK and Europe. Health officials say vaccine levels are lower than required, while cases of the potentially deadly disease are on the increase.

Chulmleigh music is on song
Chulmleigh College is proud to announce that it has been selected as one of Devon Music Education Hub’s new ‘Lead Schools for Music’.
“Music is a very important part of life at Chulmleigh,” said Richard Miners, music lead. “This award not only recognises the quality of our curriculum, but celebrates the dedication, talent and high standards of all our school musicians.” Currently, more than 100 pupils at Chulmleigh College take part in weekly instrumental and vocal lessons.
Volunteer drivers needed
South Molton Volunteer Bureau is urgently seeking drivers to help them take people in need to vital medical appointments.
“A lot of our clients live in the remote villages which surround South Molton where there is no public transport to get them to medical appointments, and without our services they would not be able to attend them,” said vice chair of the charity, James Isherwood (pictured right)
He stresses that volunteer driving is very flexible, and you don’t have to commit to a set number of drives or days. Over a six week period recently the bureau did an average of 23 journeys per week - but sometimes as many as 15 clients had to be turned down due to the lack of drivers.
If you would like to find out more about becoming a volunteer driver, please call 01769 573167 or visit: smvb.org.uk
Library mural wall unveiled
A mural painted by Peter Laws was officially ‘opened’ at South Molton Library on June 21st. It includes a quote from George R. R. Martin and more than twenty children’s book characters, and spans a stretch of the garden. The ribbon-cutting was carried out by Town Clerk Andrew Coates with Peter Laws, assisted by local schoolchildren and Alice Haynes from the library staff. Artist Peter Laws is an active member of the Friends of South Molton Library.
Council supports wildlife
South Molton Town Council has been named runner-up in the Wildlife Council of the Year category at the Wild About Devon Awards, organised by the Devon Local Nature Partnership. The award recognises the council’s commitment to supporting South Molton’s green spaces and taking a more sustainable approach to its projects.
