Molton Monthly - April 2022 Welcome to the April edition of Molton Monthly. There is war in Europe. And while peace talks are continuing, so does the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and so does the killing of ordinary people like you and I, the killing of children and the devastation of an important European nation. This month we are published in the colours of the Ukrainian flag as a sign of support. It is said the blue represents the sky above a yellow wheat field, or sunflowers which are the country’s national flower. Ukraine is often called the ‘breadbasket of Europe’. Our cover photo shows the vigil for peace held in South Molton in March. It has particular poignance because it was taken by our regular contributor, the artist and What’s Inside - April photographer Karolina Andreasova, who P6-7 Photo of the month herself grew up under Russian occupation P8 England rugby call-up for Emma in the former Czechoslovakia. She was born just an hour from the Ukraine border. Now the people of her country Slovakia are among those in Europe helping the millions of refugees. Speaking at the vigil, Karolina urged people to continue donating money to the main charity appeals and said, “I am no different to the people that are suffering there, please help in any way you can.” Read more on pages 20 - 23. We also have an interview with a former West Buckland student, who fled the war and now hopes to return to the UK (pages 46 - 47). Slava Ukraini! As always, please shop local and stay safe Peter Robinson, Editor & publisher Molton Monthly is also published free to read on our website moltonmonthly.co.uk and we have daily news updates on Facebook and Instagram @MoltonMonthly

Another world by Nick Withers
Up on the rooftop lives another world, where microscopic organisms thrive and amaze when seen close up. Nick Withers captured this stunning image of a miniature moss ecosystem, while up a ladder cleaning the gutters on his barn roof in Chulmleigh. “I wonder what organisms are living within it,” said Nick, who is a keen amateur naturalist and photographer. “I’m passionate about wildlife and the beauty of the natural world that surrounds us. I feel grounded when I spend time outside on the moors, coast or in the woods. I always try to see beauty in the small things, those that are almost overlooked in these hectic times.” More of Nick’s work can be seen on Instagram: @nickwithers2012

England call-up for rugby Emma
Left to right; Connie Powell, Zoe Aldcroft, Emma Sing and Natasha ‘Mo’ Hunt
South Molton’s Emma Sing has been called up for the England Red Roses squad, for the prestigious Six Nations tournament starting this month. All the matches will be shown on the BBC. Emma, who used to play for South Molton Rugby Club, has been selected alongside three of her teammates from the Gloucester-Hartpury WRFC (above). “My aim is to perform well in training to help the squad, and if that results in getting a cap then I’ll be extremely happy,” Emma told Molton Monthly. “I will also be happy if the team win the Grand Slam without me actually playing. It’s amazing learning from all of the other players who have so much more experience than me.” Emma scoring on her debut for the England under 20s side in spring 2019, just two days before her 18th birthday

Prayers for peace in Ukraine by Peter Robinson
On a cold, damp March evening in South Molton, the silence was shattered by the sound of air raid sirens, followed soon after by the terrifying blast of bombs falling, echoing around the Pannier Market. There were noticeable gasps, with some close to tears among the 200 or so gathered for a vigil for peace in Ukraine. The recording played for just a few seconds, a poignant reminder of the horrors of war being played out on European soil, but nothing compared to the terror unfolding 1,600 miles away. “We must stand up against evil wherever we find it. President Putin has really shown himself in his true colours by invading the sovereign nation of Ukraine,” said local councillor David Worden from South Molton, who organised the vigil. “Men, women and children are losing their lives. It’s heartbreaking to see day after day the pictures of destruction and seeing families fleeing their homes - almost 3 million refugees already.” “We want everyone to know that South Molton and North Devon’s communities are firmly behind Ukraine and its people during this shocking war. But let’s not blame the ordinary people of Russia, they’re not the ones who want this war, it’s their leaders. This war must stop.” The vigil on Tuesday, March 8th was opened by South Molton Mayor Councillor Mervyn Way, and donations made on the night and from market stall fees raised more than £1,000 for the British Red Cross. “We pray for the people of Ukraine and the people of Russia. We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons,” said the Reverend Dr Michael Grandey, from South Molton’s St Mary Magdalene Church. “We pray for the people of Russia that they have the conviction and courage to speak our against Continued on pages 22 & 23 the war.”

Aid from Chulmleigh College going to Poland on empty returning food trucks
As the war began, there was a massive and much welcomed response from the people of North Devon. Donations came in thick and fast, including bullet proof vests, military kit, winter clothing, vital medical supplies and items for children and babies. Collection points were set up including Chulmleigh College (above), and North Devon Tyres and the Binge Box in South Molton. Volunteers at North Devon Animal Ambulance coordinated pet supplies to be shipped out. Refurnish South Molton raised £1,500 through a sale day on March 12th.
Local haulier Richard Easterbrook and his Ukrainian wife Mariya (above) organised a lorry to take a warehouse full of donations over to where they were most needed, to help the millions of refugees fleeing the war into neighbouring countries. Ukrainians living locally said they were deeply touched by the amount of support. “The power of our North Devon community for the donations and help was amazing. Thank you all so much,” said Mariya. “It is utterly terrifying and heartbreaking, and I know we are all without words how this can be happening and are unable to control our emotions. We are praying for Ukraine.” Please mention Molton Monthly when contacting advertisers

Swifts need your help The South Molton Save Our Swifts group is appealing for people to join them this month, to put up next boxes to help reverse the decline in numbers of these iconic birds in North Devon. The birds are on the conservation red list in the UK, due to the loss of nesting sites, habitats abroad and due to the challenges of severe weather on their migration. Last year, 30 nest boxes were put up around South Molton and the group is hoping to urgently find more sites this month, as the Swifts arrive from Africa later in April. The group can provide nest boxes at £15 each, and can advise on the best places to put them up, along with help installing them.

Town’s ‘chicken gas’ hits the national newspapers South Molton’s innovative renewable energy supply made national newspaper headlines, featuring in the Daily Express on March 17th. Properties in the town are powered by renewable gas and electricity thanks to an Anaerobic Digestion plant run by Condate Biogas, on the outskirts of South Molton. It processes energy crops, agricultural waste and animal manures - including chicken faeces - to produce biogas. Hence the headline; ‘The town being powered by chicken manure’. It has been powering South Molton since 2016, and the facility currently provides enough renewable gas to meet the needs of every single home and also supplies 40% of the town’s electricity.

Jobs to do in April 1. Sow hardy annuals, herbs and wildflower seed directly outside into gaps in border. 2. Protect the new shoots of hostas, delphiniums, lupins and other vulnerable plants from slugs and snails. 3. Sow sweet peas directly outside at the base of supports, and transplant those sown in autumn into their final positions. 4. Sow outdoor varieties of tomatoes, chillies and courgettes in pots, so they’re ready to plant out in late May or June. 5. Keep putting out food for birds, as they are busy raising their broods. If you have a greenhouse, polytunnel or garden shed with lots of light you can really get ahead this month by planting up your pots and baskets inside and allowing them to grow on for a few weeks until it’s safe to plant them out after Franklin nights. Franklin nights legend states that between the 17th – 21st of May (depending on which version you read), we can have ‘a frost that does much injury to the blossom of apples.’ Franklin was apparently a cider maker who sold his soul to the devil! Until next month, Jenny Howells

Farm Life - spring forward to Easter by Roger Hill
Easter is quite late this year because the date all depends on the moon, the full moon to be exact. Easter Sunday is always the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon, which is after the spring equinox on March 21st. Over the years I have noted extreme weather around the above weekend impacting on farming activities. In the past it was invariably a blast of cold weather bringing snow showers. One particular year I remember drilling spring barley into near perfect soil conditions, having had a sunny week before, only to be stopped by a sudden snowstorm. We had to abandon the field halfway through our work. The following two weeks were very wet and when we resumed the original seeds had germinated to about four inches. The opposite occurred in 2019 with our first foray into planting vines. Maundy Thursday was bitterly cold with hail showers stinging our faces. By Easter Monday though, we were all applying sunscreen as it was so hot. The vines were wilting and we were hauling buckets of water to keep them cool. Even I was down to my t-shirt and shorts, but that’s enough about my knobbly knees! ‘Til next time, Roger #TuppertheTractor (website: quoit-at-cross.co.uk)

99 not out, cricket club seeks new players as it heads towards century
Filleigh Cricket Club are building up to their centenary season next year, and are looking for new players to join their team, who play their home matches in the picturesque surroundings of Deer Park on the Castle Hill Estate (above). They have recently appointed a new management committee in both the senior and junior sections, and say great strides have already been made with the younger players, benefiting from fresh energy and ideas and a dedicated coaching team. “The hard work continues this season with a focus on the men’s teams and the allnew women’s and girl’s teams,” said club secretary Pete Buckley. “Now there will be cricket available for everyone in the area who wishes to play, regardless of ability or experience.” As they head towards their ‘century milestone’ the club says it will not only be celebrating past members and achievements, but will be looking ahead to the future of cricket in North Devon. If you are interested in playing for Filleigh Cricket Club or volunteering at matches or non-playing activities, please get in touch through their dedicated Play Cricket website where you will find contact and match details: filleigh.play-cricket.com/Aboutus

Student flees war in Ukraine A former West Buckland School student is among the millions who have fled the war in Ukraine. Mary Lydon now hopes to return to the UK after running from her home in Kyiv with only a rucksack of clothes, after the city first came under attack by Russians on February 24th. “We are all so relieved to hear that Mary is safe and well and we pray for her family still in Ukraine,” said a spokesman for the North Devon school. “Many of you will have visited the school and seen Mary’s exquisite paintings, a fantastic legacy from an extremely talented young lady. We’re very proud of her and how she’s coped in such difficult circumstances.”

The 22 year-old left everything behind before embarking on a gruelling three-day journey to Krakow in Poland. She had been studying at Glasgow School of Art, but was forced to return to her native Ukraine when she could no longer afford the tuition fees when worked dried up due to the Covid pandemic. Mary told Scotland’s Daily Record that her family were terrified when the air raid sirens first sounded, “We were very stressed. We didn’t feel we would be safe in our apartment on the ninth floor, so we started our journey to leave.” “At the train station, because my brother is underage and I was a girl, we managed to take the train to Poland, but we had to leave my dad and my partner behind.” “That was the most horrific moment. Just to see them staying at the station as the train starts moving - and no one knows when I am going to see them again. I was just in tears,” added Mary.

Mary’s father and partner are now volunteering in the capital city to help those affected by the war, while her mum stayed behind to work in a hospital in Kyiv. Meanwhile, Mary has been doing everything to help from a distance - but says has been forced to rebuild her life from scratch. She said the Polish people have been very welcoming, but she doesn’t know where to turn to next. Her friend Fleur Connor has set up an online appeal which has so far raised £2,000, in the hope that Mary can find a home back in the UK with her younger brother. Community News pages 50-56 Coronavirus restrictions ease, but cases rocket North Devon District Hospital declared a ‘critical incident’ in mid March after a sudden rise in admissions of patients suffering from Covid-19. Sources say more than 20 were being treated at one point. After starting to fall, the number of positive cases reported rose dramatically to 860 in North Devon (up 472) and 691 in Mid Devon (up 232) in the second week of March. Steve Brown, Devon’s Director of Public Health, is urging people to stay at home if they feel unwell with Coronavirus, or symptoms of other illnesses that could be infectious. His call comes as Devon is seeing a big rise again in the number of Covid-19 cases, with the latest data showing an 80 per cent increase in cases across the county in March. “I believe that many people are now left uncertain of what they should be doing, with the legal requirement to self-isolate gone, with free testing for most people about to end, and the onus now on individuals to decide for themselves what the appropriate behaviour is,” said Mr Brown. A new variant, Omicron BA.2 is now said to be becoming the dominant strain. “We’re seeing a rise across all ages in our communities, especially among the working age population. We’re seeing it in care homes, among vulnerable residents and staff. And we seeing it in hospitals, with pressures in health and care settings, compounded by staff absences due to illness.” He says there are five simple things people can do to help stop the spread: 1. Stay at home if you’ve tested positive for Covid, or have symptoms of this or other possible infections. 2. Unless you’re exempt, continue to wear face coverings when in indoor public spaces with people you don’t live with - including public transport, hospitality and retail. 3. Keep testing, and stay at home if you test positive for Coronavirus. 4. Make sure vaccinations are up to date. 5. Hand hygiene - washing your hands regularly helps prevent spreading infections.

New ‘nature tourism’ project North Devon UNESCO Biosphere and Torridge District Council have joined forces on a new Nature Tourism Agenda to boost sustainability across the sector. The idea is to help businesses to grow by supporting them in showcasing the abundance of natural assets and adventure activities across northern Devon. Chris Brant of Unmissable England, says, “Visitors are looking for authentic guided experiences that connect them with the locals and the places they know best. Visitors want to be captivated by fascinating stories about nature and the landscape well beyond the tourist trail.” A series of workshops was held in March to
launch the new collaboration. “Tourists want to immerse themselves in local history and heritage, and leave with a better understanding of the places they have experienced,” added Mr Brant. Molton Monthly is a North Devon Biosphere Business Partner, helping to promote sustainability where we live and work. Blackford Education (Schools) Ltd is delighted to announce that the Libra School at Heasley Mill, South Radworthy, North Devon has been awarded ‘Outstanding’ in our recent Ofsted Inspection. We are proud that the highly skilled and very capable work of our staff team has been recognised by Ofsted alongside the excellent behaviour and progress of the children. Parents were overwhelmingly positive about the school and the impact that the staff team has had on their children. This Outstanding grade recognises the progress that the school has made over the past 3 years, achieving Trauma Informed Schools Award status as well as the development of our farm school based at Tivington Farm near Minehead and a second forest school site in North Devon. These additions and initiatives have resulted in an exciting, innovative and creative curriculum to engage children for whom education has previously not been a positive experience, with really amazing outcomes. We had a great party with circus skills activities and street food vans (pictured) to celebrate this wonderful achievement.
