Town’s ‘chicken gas’ hits the national newspapers South Molton’s innovative renewable energy supply made national newspaper headlines, featuring in the Daily Express on March 17th. Properties in the town are powered by renewable gas and electricity thanks to an Anaerobic Digestion plant run by Condate Biogas, on the outskirts of South Molton. It processes energy crops, agricultural waste and animal manures - including chicken faeces - to produce biogas. Hence the headline; ‘The town being powered by chicken manure’. It has been powering South Molton since 2016, and the facility currently provides enough renewable gas to meet the needs of every single home and also supplies 40% of the town’s electricity.
Environmental award at school Students at West Buckland School have won a 2021 UNESCO North Devon Biosphere ‘Pledge for Nature’ award, following their dedicated work to increase awareness of ecology and sustainability at school. The school’s ecology and biodiversity group WEBS, received the prestigious accolade for their work developing wildflower meadows and planting more than 500 trees donated by the Woodland Trust in the past two years.
