‘Relief’ as schools go back with lifting of lockdown restrictions School pupils across North Devon started to get back into their classrooms from March 8th. For many it was the first time in at least two months that they’d seen their teachers, support staff and school friends. The reopening of schools was the first step along the Government’s ‘roadmap’ out of the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.

“It was wonderful to see the expressions, under their masks, of the children for ourselves. They’re finally here,” said Chulmleigh College headteacher Michael Johnson, speaking on BBC Spotlight. “I think there’s a great sense of relief from the children, the staff, the parents and the community. Everything pivots on schools so much in society, maybe it’s time for everybody to have a look at schools again and the role that they play.” Most pupils have to wear face coverings in class, and mass testing for Coronavirus is now becoming part of the daily routine for staff as well as young people. Among the 700 returning to school at Chulmleigh College, pupils said they were ‘relieved’ to be back, adding that there was ‘no substitute for the education you receive at school’.
