Molton Monthly - April 2021 Welcome to the April edition of Molton Monthly - I hope you have a happy Easter, and as the planned easing of lockdown is expected to begin in earnest this month, I have everything crossed that after a truly tough 12 months there’s no return to the most stringent restrictions. The number of positive Coronavirus cases reported in the last few weeks in North Devon has hovered around single figures, and many more of us are being vaccinated - you can read about my experience of having my first jab on pages 16-17. There’s little doubt that we’ll have to learn to live with Covid-19 in the years to come, but hopefully we can adapt our lives and focus on other important issues like tackling climate change. Our cover photo this month, by local photographer and artist Karolina Andreasova, reflects the optimism of spring. A time of the year that usually heralds new beginnings in our gardens and countryside.

The schools have gone back and many of our hospitality, tourism and other businesses will reopen, again, from April 12th. You’ll see a lot of their adverts in this month’s magazine and I urge you to support them safely. There’s a new feature this month, Molton Makers (pages 50-51), shining a light on the many talented folk of our area. Please get in touch if you’d like to be showcased, and of course if you have a story or photo you’d like to see in print. As always, please stay safe. In a secluded corner of Exmoor a stag reaches up to snack on a holly tree. This moment of natural serenity was captured by Jessica Charley, aged 19, for our photo of the month. “I finished my A-level photography course at Ilfracombe Academy last year,” Jessica told Molton Monthly. “Due to the Covid pandemic I have found myself having more time to enjoy the wildlife on Exmoor.” “I love nothing more than watching these ‘boys’ in their natural surroundings, and try to get some great shots. I have always had a keen interest in photography and would love to pursue a career around it.” Jessica is already putting her skills to good use, photographing events, weddings, pets and adverts. Vintage rally cancelled for second summer
Photo from the 2019 rally by Pete Robinson
The popular South Molton Vintage Rally has fallen victim to the Covid-19 pandemic for the second year in a row, with organisers cancelling this year’s event due to be held on June 5th. “We have continued to closely monitor the Coronavirus situation, and whilst the ongoing vaccination programme is progressing well and should be commended, it has nevertheless become increasingly evident (as in 2020) that it is unfeasible to run South Molton Vintage Rally,” said a spokesman for the rally team. “It was not an easy decision but we believe it to be the right one. The safety of the many members, supporters and visitors was one of our main considerations, plus we could not risk any infringement of the legislation regarding gatherings.” South Molton Vintage Rally is not just one of the area’s favourites, it is also a lifeline for many local charities and good causes, usually donating thousands of pounds every year. The rally club organisers say they still hope to run some smaller scale events later this year.

What it’s like to have the Covid-19 vaccine by Pete Robinson
Dr Miranda in vaccine action, and yes I’m smiling!
A few days before my 60th birthday I was invited to become one of the half a million people so far in Devon to receive their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccination. I was delighted to be given the opportunity to go to the local clinic at Barnstaple Leisure Centre, where I was met and guided by a team of friendly and efficient volunteers with smiling eyes and cheery demeanour beneath their face coverings despite the drizzle on a grey Friday afternoon. The process from queueing to registration to vaccination took about twenty minutes. You’re asked a few health questions while you are waiting in line, then it was my turn to see Miranda one of our local GPs (above). The injection itself I found quick and ‘just a sharp scratch’ as the medics say.
16
Contact Molton Monthly: 07484 290500 email: info@moltonmonthly.co.uk
I was given the Oxford–AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine. My arm ached a bit for a few days, and I did have ‘flu type’ side effects the following day for about 36 hours, but I’m told by doctors that’s a good thing as it showed my immune system is working. So that’s it for now, and I’m waiting to be contacted for my second dose probably in May. It’s important to remember that having the vaccine doesn’t necessarily stop you from catching Coronavirus, or carrying it and spreading it - so it’s still vital to follow the rules and keep your distance, wear a face covering, wash your hands regularly and ventilate your homes and work places. Lockdown restriction changes From March 29th, up to six people or two households, can meet outdoors and you can travel more to exercise (the guidance changes to ‘minimise travel’). Outdoor organised sports and parent-child groups can resume. Then April 12th sees big changes as some UK holidays can take place, outdoor attractions can open and pubs with beer gardens can start serving alcohol outside (details on the Government graphic on the right). You can see South Molton Medical Centre’s advert on page 35 in our Health & Wellbeing section for more vaccination information. Please mention Molton Monthly when contacting advertisers

A ‘good budget’ for the property market Following a very positive budget in March for the property world, it could be fair to say that we can expect the busy times in the housing market to continue across North Devon and Exmoor. An extension was announced to the zero Stamp Duty ‘holiday’ for homes under £500,000 in England and Northern Ireland until end of June, and for sale of properties up to £250,000 until the end of September. A new help-to-buy style mortgage deposit scheme for first time buyers has also been launched. There is already huge demand from both local buyers, and those from outside the area. The property market is very much a supply and demand business, and currently the demand is greater than the supply, so if you are looking to move now could be an ideal time to market your home. With Easter soon upon us, spring gardens coming into bloom and the hope of sunnier days now could be the perfect time to make that move. Housing market information provided by Webbers, South Molton.

Striking gold! Tourism sector scoops awards despite pandemic As the North Devon tourism industry gears up to reopen later this month following the latest lockdown, local businesses are celebrating after winning major regional awards. Quince Honey Farm at South Molton scooped Gold in the Tourism Innovation category and Bronze in Visitor Attraction of the Year at the Devon Tourism Awards 2020, held online in March.
Raising a glass are Paddy, Ian and Jean Wallace (Partners), and Ruby Mapp (Marketing Manager)
Ian Wallace, Quince Honey Farm Partner said, “We’re delighted to have won these two prestigious awards. It not only shows how much we have grown over the past two years following our relocation in 2019, but that we have maintained our high standards and demonstrates our ambitions for the future.” Ian continues, “There is no denying the last 12 months have been a very challenging time for tourism, so to be recognised for our hard work is a great honour. We look forward to welcoming our visitors back in the not too distant future.” North Devon picked up another Gold award, with the team at the Exmoor National Park Centre in Lynmouth Pavilion winning Visitor Information Service of the Year. The centre provides inspiration and information to nearly 100,000 people a year. Meanwhile the Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway has been awarded Silver in Devon’s 2020 Visitor Attraction of the Year category, and was also Highly Commended in the Tourism Innovation category. As things stand, tourism businesses can start to reopen from April 12th (see page 17).

Special Olympian is digging for victory! Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Lee Symons has had to put his dreams of swimming in the Special Olympics this year on hold, but that hasn’t stopped the 17 year old from South Molton aiming to help his town win gold. He has been volunteering along with his mum Elaine, with the South Molton in Bloom team, as they dig for victory in this year’s prestigious regional floral competition. “I’m looking forward to seeing South Molton looking really beautiful with all the flowers this summer,” said Lee. “I’m proud to be part of making it happen.” Work is getting underway across South Molton for the 2021 South West in Bloom competition.

Spring blooms in South Molton by Karolina Andreasova
“South Molton in Bloom has achieved a lot in the last month, but like decorating it is all in the preparation!” said coordinator Sue Harrison. “We’ve done lots of digging up beds and weeding, plus we have planted some shrubs already.” Businesses and individuals have started to sponsor South Molton’s entry, and the organisers say the feedback from everyone in the town has been really positive. “By June 21st there should be lots of colour and interest around our beautiful town,” added Sue. A new fundraising appeal has been launched, and for a minimum donation of £25 you can have a shrub planted in memory of a special person or pet (see below for contact information). Details will be announced next month of a special front garden/house frontage competition for all those in South Molton. You’re encouraged to get planning and planting now! Residents of all ages can also get creative by making collages of flowers, bees, birds and butterflies and send them in to be displayed around the town in July - whether it is a drawing, colouring, painting or craft work, all entries are welcome. Make sure you put your name on it. To make a donation or submit an entry contact: sue@southmoltoninbloom.co.uk or drop a cheque made payable to South Molton in Bloom with your name and phone number to: Daisy Park in South Molton. Pet food bank bounds into life during lockdown “Patch’s Pet Food Bank provides a lifeline. In a world where things are so upside down, and so much human kindness surfacing, it is reassuring to know our animal companions are being thought of too,” Ioni Drake from South Molton told Molton Monthly. This new North Devon pet charity started up during lockdown at the end of last year. Founder Emma Osborne saw that while children and families were getting vital financial support, pet owners were being left facing difficult decisions due to hardship. “Some people have been having to choose whether to re-home their treasured pets because the pandemic has meant it’s been a struggle to afford to keep them,” said Emma.
Ioni Drake with her dog JB
“Many of the rehoming centres are full, so we thought it made sense to try to offer help to keep them where they should be - at their owner’s side.” An initial appeal on social media saw overwhelming support for the idea, and Patch’s Pet Food Bank was born.

Emma named the food bank in honour of her loyal Labrador-cross, Patch, who sadly passed away in November 2018 (Emma and Patch pictured below).
“Our pets have kept us sane, allowed us outside walks, and combatted loneliness during lockdown. That’s been a life saver for many,” said Ioni, who is now fundraising to support the charity. “This wonderful charity has not only helped humans keep, feed and support their pets, it’s also stopped many being surrendered, and having to heartbreakingly leave their homes and owners for the unfamiliar.” Donations can be left at Market Vets in South Molton, and the charity drops off care packages at South Molton Community Fridge at Kitchen at the YMCA on alternate Mondays. As well as food, they can help with kit such as bedding, cages and food bowls. A fundraising page has been set up at: gofund.me/d4cfe399 You can find more information on their website: patchspetfoodbank.co.uk Please mention Molton Monthly when contacting advertisers

Jobs to do in April 1. Plant out autumn-sown sweet pea plants or direct sow outdoors. Look out for varieties which are strongly perfumed. 2. Plant evergreen trees and shrubs including Mediterranean climate shrubs such as Hebe and Ceanothus. 3. Divide snowdrops as they die back. Plant bulbs singly, at the same depth they were growing previously. Remove faded daffodil and tulip flowers. 4. Sow beetroot, carrots, Swiss chard, summer cauliflowers, kohl rabi, lettuce, leeks, radish, turnip, spring onions, peas and perpetual spinach. 5. Plant annuals and perennials to attract insects – classic choices include Love in a Mist, single flowered marigolds, oregano and thyme. If you didn’t get round to pruning your lavender plants last autumn, you still have chance to do it this month. Prune back hard to small shoots on the stems before the plant starts active growth. If you need to replace your Lavender plants now is a great time to do it, as although container grown Lavender can be planted at any time of the year, the best time is late April/early May when the soil is warming up. Until next month, Jenny Howells

Farm Life - April showers doth bring forth May flowers by Roger Hill
April is always an exciting month for farmers and growers. Crops are bursting into life and flowers light up the countryside. Both are so important for everyone, especially after the twelve months we have all been through. We are very lucky to live in a rural area with fresh (sometimes bracing) air, stunning scenery and such a supportive community. With green shoots emerging both with regard to Covid and also in the fields and gardens, there is hope for the future. They say that farmers do not make good gardeners, mainly because a busy time in the fields is also when the garden needs us most. Here at our Devon farm we have combined the two with a small vineyard now in its third year. 2019 saw us plant 800 vines such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Rondo, with an additional 800 last year (photo opposite). They are all surrounded by wild flowers to attract the bees and butterflies. If we are allowed this summer we are hoping to host another vineyard tour for charity as we did pre-Covid. Hopefully in the autumn we can harvest a small consignment of grapes to be made into wine. Unfortunately we shall have to wait another six months to taste it! ‘Til next time, Roger #Tupper the Tractor

‘We did it!’ Chulmleigh to welcome refugee family by Jo Moser
Lisa Tate celebrating with supporters (before lockdown) after raising £1,400 towards the £10,000 total
‘How nice to have some good news in these difficult times’, wrote one of our many supporters on learning that Chulmleigh Community Welcome has received full approval from the Home Office to welcome a refugee family to the town.
To get here, our team of volunteers raised more than £10,000 during the pandemic.
The fundraising included Hilary Johnson making beautiful cotton masks and continued with ‘Lisa’s run’ (pictured above). Then there were the terracotta tiles dug up by Richard Toller and taken to the Pannier Market, which proved to be a treasure trove! We have been constantly blown away by everyone’s generosity in response to the Community Sponsorship programme. By the time our family arrives in late spring, Covid restrictions should be easing, and our team will be well trained to help them settle in. Happily once they are here, the children will be able to go to school and the family will have a chance to breathe and begin to plan their future. Please welcome them as you would any new family arriving in Chulmleigh. ‘Relief’ as schools go back with lifting of lockdown restrictions School pupils across North Devon started to get back into their classrooms from March 8th. For many it was the first time in at least two months that they’d seen their teachers, support staff and school friends. The reopening of schools was the first step along the Government’s ‘roadmap’ out of the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.
Queuing for a Covid test at Chulmleigh College (above) and carry out tests (below)
“It was wonderful to see the expressions, under their masks, of the children for ourselves. They’re finally here,” said Chulmleigh College headteacher Michael Johnson, speaking on BBC Spotlight. “I think there’s a great sense of relief from the children, the staff, the parents and the community. Everything pivots on schools so much in society, maybe it’s time for everybody to have a look at schools again and the role that they play.” Most pupils have to wear face coverings in class, and mass testing for Coronavirus is now becoming part of the daily routine for staff as well as young people. Among the 700 returning to school at Chulmleigh College, pupils said they were ‘relieved’ to be back, adding that there was ‘no substitute for the education you receive at school’.

Showcasing the talented folk of North Devon Dinsdale Petch - bronze and metalwork Tucked away in East Buckland, alchemy has been at work for nearly 30 years. Dinsdale Petch (right) trained as a blacksmith and an antique metal ware restorer before building his bronze foundry at home. From here he hot casts a quirky range of awardwinning bronzes, undertakes prestigious commissions & lovingly restores historic metal items back to their former glory. Dinsdale is passionate about keeping traditional skills and crafts alive. He learnt how to cast metal through reading and experimenting. Many of the tools and pieces of equipment he uses are fabricated by himself or are antiques in their own right!
He is busy working on commissions at the moment, many of which end up on far away shores. Community News pages 52-57 Staff to share in £2.5 million takeover of RGB RGB Building Supplies has been acquired by Grant & Stone, becoming part of what’s said to be the largest independent builders merchant group in southern England.
RGB South Molton
The company will continue trading as RGB Building Supplies across Devon, Cornwall and Somerset, and its head office will still be located in Barnstaple.
Proceeds of more £2.5 million from the sale will be shared with RGB’s 350 employees as a reward for their commitment, long service, loyalty and support.
The firm says ‘customers will continue to receive the same high standards of service and will not see any changes when visiting their local branch’. They believe the acquisition will allow RGB to further add to and improve its offering.
Retiring RGB Chairman Colin Worth, who has worked for the business for 54 years, said, “We are extremely proud of the RGB team and wanted to say thank you for everything they’ve done. We look forward to growing the company with them.” Kevin Fenlon, company CEO , added, “This partnership is exciting and will deliver great things. RGB and Grant & Stone are completely aligned in our ambitions for the company and how we achieve them. We also believe in product excellence and outstanding customer service.”
The show must go on As things stand with the planned easing of Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, at least three Devon country shows plan to go ahead. First is the Devon County Show at Westpoint, Exeter from July 2nd - 4th, then the Mid Devon Show at Knighthayes, Tiverton on July 24th and finally the local North Devon Show at Umberleigh, scheduled for August 4th.

New local produce shop, created out of lockdown The Naturemade Store in South Molton has been opened out of the demand for healthy products, highlighted during the pandemic. During lockdown, Lucy Bowden and Esme Brown delivered milk and produce to their regular customers around the area, and found they were continually being asked for other items ‘Naturemade in Devon’ started in Bish Mill in 1979, initially as a goat dairy and then producing vegan and vegetarian foods, distributing to wholefood and health stores around the country. They have now set up shop in the premises where their previous venture Treasured Things was based in South Street.
“We all need to pull together and provide local food choices to local people, and are now very excited to be able to offer our own produce along with whole/healthy foods,” said Esme. They’ll stock local milk and dairy produce, and freshly baked bread alongside a range of health food products and takeaway coffees.

Memories of Rosie’s rural North Devon life published At just a few months short of her ninetieth birthday, Rosemary Wedlake has published her autobiography. It’s the story of a true Devon country girl - from her early years in Shebbear to her married life on Bourne Farm in Chulmleigh, the town where she and her husband Richard still live. In her singular style, the author describes rural life in North Devon and Torridge through the eyes of one who has lived it to the full. This unique social history, written by one of the area’s most treasured characters, treats the reader to a tractor-ride through the last one hundred years! When her brothers went off to fight in the
1939-45 war, ‘Rosie’ from the age of ten, stayed at home and helped on the family farm - and she couldn’t have been happier; it became her life. She says she loved every aspect of farming, and could deliver a breached-birth lamb, rescue a cow from a ditch, plough a field and mend machinery! Under the expert tutelage of her disabled father there was little she failed to learn about agriculture. Of an evening her mother would use her teaching skills to ensure Rosemary lacked nothing in the way of an education. Rosemary (pictured opposite) became an expert horse-woman, and her love of hunting, shooting, fishing and farming gradually gave way to hilarious talks to WI Groups and other Associations across

Prime Minister phones school over horse race! PM Boris Johnson phoned the head teacher of Chulmleigh College... to ask him to allow 14 year old pupil Margot Scudamore to watch her father Tom, a leading jockey, on TV while at school! Tom Scudamore was racing in the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March, and because of lockdown restrictions his daughter Margot, herself an aspiring jockey, couldn’t travel to see him race live. The ministerial intervention came about after a social media post about Margot missing the races was spotted by an MP. It was reported in the Daily Mail that head teacher Michael Johnson (no relation to Boris!), told Margot the Prime Minister had phoned, and said if her work had been good during the lockdown her and classmates should be able to watch Cheltenham races. Dad Tom told the Mail, “Michael said he told the PM her lockdown work had indeed been good and her teachers were all happy!” Margot herself has had a winning start to her horse racing career before Covid halted the season.
