Special Olympian is digging for victory!

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Lee Symons has had to put his dreams of swimming in the Special Olympics this year on hold, but that hasn’t stopped the 17 year old from South Molton aiming to help his town win gold.

He has been volunteering along with his mum Elaine, with the South Molton in Bloom team, as they dig for victory in this year’s prestigious regional floral competition.

“I’m looking forward to seeing South Molton looking really beautiful with all the flowers this summer,” said Lee. “I’m proud to be part of making it happen.”

Work is getting underway across South Molton for the 2021 South West in Bloom competition.

“South Molton in Bloom has achieved a lot in the last month, but like decorating it is all in the preparation!” said coordinator Sue Harrison. “We’ve done lots of digging up beds and weeding, plus we have planted some shrubs already.”

Businesses and individuals have started to sponsor South Molton’s entry, and the organisers say the feedback from everyone in the town has been really positive. “By June 21st there should be lots of colour and interest around our beautiful town,” added Sue.

A new fundraising appeal has been launched, and for a minimum donation of £25 you can have a shrub planted in memory of a special person or pet (see below for contact information).

Details will be announced next month of a special front garden/house frontage competition for all those in South Molton. You’re encouraged to get planning and planting now!

Residents of all ages can also get creative by making collages of flowers, bees, birds and butterflies and send them in to be displayed around the town in July - whether it is a drawing, colouring, painting or craft work, all entries are welcome. Make sure you put your name on it.
